At New World, Au-Cu-Ag mineralization occurs in stratiform car-bonate-hosted, massive sulfide-iron oxide, and skarn-replacement deposits. Regional pyritic-alteration, local massive sulfide mineralization and mine wastes generate acid drainage within the district. Water quality improves down gradient through dilution and mixing of acid and metal-rich mine water with bicarbonate-rich, low-metal surface and groundwater, and precipitation of metal-rich ferrihydroxide phases. Natural deposits of ferricrete indicate that pre-mining ARD has occurred, providing important clues to pre-mining water quality. The geoenvironmental model identifies the Cu-skarn mineralization as the primary target for ARD management. Closure success will be limited by the geoenvironmental nature of the natural mineralization.

The paper outlines the ventilation practices prevailing in coal mines of Singareni Collieries Company (South India). The high annual average surface temperature and relatively steep geothermic gradient results in virgin strata temperatures in the region of 38- 42°C creating environmental problems in the working places. Expensive methods of air cooling can not be employed as the mines are small, and production and productivity do not justify the costs of artificial cooling of mine air. Controlled recirculation of mine air -- the unconventional technique being tried with success in some coal mines in U.K. has been analysed for improving the environmental conditions. The analysis shows that the method is safe, cost effective and can be applied with very little extra equipment.

One of the purest gypsum deposits in the United States is located in northwest Oklahoma about 90 miles northwest of Oklahoma City. Gypsum beds of the Blaine Formation (Permian) are each 10 to 15 feet thick and 97 to 99 percent pure; they are being quarried by four companies in the area. Most of the stone mined by U.S. Gypsum Company is calcined for the manufacturing of wallboard and special plasters, but some of the crude gypsum is marketed for cement manufacture and for use as soil conditioner. Reclamation of the mined lands at Southard, Oklahoma, has been carried out since 1968, and the company is now involved in a cooperative program of land revegetation to aid in erosion control, provide for wildlife, and for beautification.

Consider a deep gold orebody with grade of 4 g/t (0.11 oz/st). At the time of this writing, with gold prices at historic highs, it could be a good, but not great, prospect. But if it is a vein deposit, and those veins are 200 g/t (5.8 oz/st), it would be significantly more attractive if there was a way to produce directly from those veins, leaving the rest of the rock in place. It has been a viable commercial technology for more than five decades.

Minter (1990) has provided an excellent summary of the sedimentology and theories of origin of the Witwatersrand paleoplacer Au/U deposits. However, recent stratigraphic, metamorphic and structural-tectonic research is radically changing the concepts about the Witwatersrand that now occur in most textbooks, review articles and North American minds. Presently, these concepts are biased by the past sedimentological research so well described by Minter. Specifically, the Witwatersrand Supergroup is Archean, does not occupy a depositional basin and is significantly metamorphosed and deformed. Thus, many of its sedimentary features, including the mineralogy of its ores, have been modified. The importance of the Witwatersrand ores cannot be overestimated. Since their discovery in 1886, they have produced 52% of the gold mined in all of human history (Pretorius, 1989).

The first phase of an investigation of the chemical composition of subsurface water and the hydrochemical processes in and near the abandoned Nordic tailings at Elliot Lake, Ontario, was conducted in 1979. The Nordic area, which covers 85 hectares with an average thickness of 10 m and overlies deposits of permeable glaciofluvial sand, contains 15 million tonnes of tailings with 4-7% pyrite. Nests of standpipe piezometers installed at three locations on the tailings indicate that seepage through the tailings is predominantly downward. The water table in the tailings slopes from the north side of the tailings dam, where it is within a metre of surface to the south side near the tailings dam, where it is approximately 10 m below surface. When they were deposited during the period from 1957 to 1968, the tailings contained pore water at a pH of about 8 resulting from neutralization treatment in the mill. At the three piezometer nests, the pH increases from 3 near the water table to 7 near the bottom of the tailings. The pore water in the tailings is gradually becoming acidic because of oxidation of pyrite in the zone above the water table. The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, Zn and Pb are high in the shallow acidic zone and much lower in the deeper neutral zone. Concentrations of 226Ra range from 30 to 230 pCi/L. At the three sites concentrations of major ions in the permeable sand a short interval beneath the tailings indicate 226Ra presence of tailings seepage, but Ra concentrations are only 2 to 8 pCi/L. Greater downward penetration of 226Ra probably occurs in the area closer to the tailings dam. Monitoring of a network of multilevel bundle piezometers installed in permeable sand that extends southward from beneath the tailings indicates the occurrence of a plume of tailingsderived water containing high concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe and S04 that extend 400 m downgradient from the tailings dam. The total dissolved solids decline from 20,000 at the dam to less than 500 mg/L at the identifiable downgradient periphery of the plume. A much smaller but distinct plume of water with high heavy metal concentrations and 226Ra in the range of 10 to 130 pCi/L extends from beneath the dam for a distance of 15 m. The pH of the groundwater in this heavy metal-radium plume is 4 to 5, whereas elsewhere in zone of groundwater with high dissolved solids, the pH is above 6. Mining operations of Freeport Indonesia (FI) are located approximately 4 degrees -6' south latitude, 137 -7' east longitude in Irian Jaya the eastern most state of Indonesia (Figure I). The mines are located approximately 96 km (60 miles) from coast in the Carstenz Mountain range. The ore bodies are between 2900 and 4000 meters (9500 and 13 000 ft) elevation.

The network of freight tunnels in Chicago consists of about 62 miles of horseshoeshaped tunnels constructed typically less than 50 feet below ground surface. These tunnels serve as repositories of much infrastructure and should remain serviceable. The tunnels are often impacted by adjacent excavations and the question arises as to the existing state of stress in the final liner. This paper discusses construction of these tunnels and presents the results of finite element analyses which were used to obtain ranges for axial forces and bending moments that have developed in the final liner of the freight tunnels since their construction.

A small area in the Alabama Piedmont was studied to determine if metallic enrichment was associated with local magnetic anomalies. Cores from two holes in these magnetic anomalous areas have sulfide (pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite) film on slicken-side and fracture surfaces. Two hundred and fifty soil samples were collected from the top of the "B" horizon on 1, 000 foot centers over the general trend of magnetic anomalies. Soil samples were leached with a 1:2. 7 mixture of HF and H2SO4 and the dilute filtrate analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Mo, and Cd, using atomic absorption methods. Concentration-value maps were prepared for each element. Small areas of anomalous concentrations were defined for Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo, and Ni. Some of these areas generally coincides with magnetic anomalies. Concentration values (ppm) range from: Cu 165.0 - 0. 5; Pb 265. 0 - 0.0; Zn 1386.0 - 43. 0; Ni 187.0 - 10.0; Co 207.0 - 6. 5; Cr 117.5 - 2.0; Mo 95.0 - 0.0; and Cd 32. 5 - 2.0. Studies of other magnetic anomalies appear warranted.

The Howe Coal Company located in Leflore County, Oklahoma is mining the Oklahoma Lower Hartshorne Coal bed which ranges in thickness from 38" to 42" and dips approximately 7 degrees to the Northeast. The Lower Hartshorne bed lies within the Hartshorne sandstone in Oklahoma but is as much as 60 feet above this sandstone formation in Arkansas. This coal bed extends throughout the Arkansas Oklahoma coal basin, which is about 50 miles wide and 180 miles long and progresses from a semi anthracite in Arkansas to a low-volatile coal in the eastern part of the Oklahoma to a high-volatile coal in the western area. The Howe Mine #1 in the eastern area is mining a low-volatile bituminous coal which has been used as metallurgical coal since the early 1900's as evidence of Bee-hive coke ovens still remain near the town Howe, a few miles northwest of the mine site. The Howe Mine is the first mine in the area to use modern mining equipment, however, numerous punch mines have been worked along the outcrop south of the mine site dating from 1900 with the last closing in 1965. The coal characteristics of the Lower Hartshorne rival the Pocahontas seam in chemistry and coking qualities. This paper will be concerned with the preparation of the coal for the Japanese steel market. The three man crew necessary to operate the plant are the operator, the helper, and the equipment operator needed to feed the raw coal hopper. An additional equipment operator is available on the day shift for coal loading and moving the clean coal to the storage pile as the area under the clean coal belt is only large enough for 1 shifts production. We are at present running the plant on a 2 shift per day basis.

An ore zoning technique developed by Climax geologists during the past forty years has been used to contour drill-hole assay values on cross-sections for fourteen porphyry molybdenum deposits in western North America, including the Climax and Henderson orebodies. Detailed geological studies of these large, complex deposits are essential in determining ore controls, which are the factors most critical to the zoning of MoS2 and to conceptualizing geologic models. The technique provides a detailed representation of the size, shape, grade distribution, and geologic continuity of the individual deposits. It demands a disciplined approach and adheres to rigorous rules while maintaining flexibility for adaptation to widely varying geologic conditions. By defining the limits that guide and control manual, computer-assisted conventional, and geostatistical reserve estimates, it exerts a strong geologic influence on the estimation process. A combination of ore zoning and geostatistical analysis of molybdenum deposits produces a significantly more accurate, precise, and defendable geologic reserve estimate than other methods.

Excavation of large rock caverns is a stepwise process. Whether one uses a heading and bench method or a multiple drift system, the use of excavation steps enables one to introduce the reinforcement, such as bolts or shotcrete, at the earliest possible stage. Knowing the spatial distribution and properties of rock materials and geological discontinuities, the cavern geometry and its reinforcement must be optimized. The finite element method of analysis is a powerful tool for such optimization. However, the models are only as good as their ability to account realistically for the physical attributes of the prototype and for the excavation sequence. They must include the following: - ability to model an incremental construction process. Thus requires the use of "Restart" procedures where displacements and stresses from a previous equilibrium are saved for the next step. - ability to model non-linear rock material behavior; in particular, the post-peak behavior of the rock which retains a residual strength when con-fined. The stability of many under-ground structures rests with the "broken" rock carrying significant loads. - ability to account for the non-linear behavior of geological discontinuities. These are two-fold. First, up to peak, non smooth rock joints will dilate. In a confined situation, dilation will increase joint strength by a consider-able amount (Obert, et al, Brady, 1971, Heuze,1978a), Then, beyond the peak, the joint also retains residual strength.

Overland belt conveyors often use vertically guided counterweight take-ups or horizontally tensioned carriages to maintain belt tension. In the event of belt or wire rope failure, these systems can release significant stored energy, creating high-impact forces that risk structural damage and personnel injury. This paper reviews current safety arresting technologies and presents a calculation methodology for estimating impact velocity, energy absorption requirements, and stroke limitations. Worked examples illustrate the selection process for appropriate arrestor types under different design constraints. The study emphasizes early integration of safety devices to minimize structural loads, avoid costly retrofits, and enhance operational reliability. Implementing robust arrestor systems improves safety and reduces downtime in bulk material handling environments.

Flotation of oxide minerals, particularly silicates, with cationic collectors differs substantially from classic flotation of sulfide minerals using sulfhydryl collectors. In the case of cationic flotation of these minerals, in general: 1. There is a greater importance of electrostatic interaction between mineral and collector. 2. Longer-chained collectors are required; as a rule at least 10 carbons must be present in the hydrocarbon chain. 3. Moderate concentration of collector is required. 4. Attachment between collector and mineral appears to be less strong even though the system may exhibit a large contact angle. 5. Required conditioning time before flotation is usually relatively short. 6. There is sensitivity to slimes. 7. The collectors usually possess frothing power. 8. In the southern part ?f the Occidental Carpathians an iron ore body embedded in crystalline schist was exploited. The presence of minerals such as magnetite, pyrite, pyro-chorine, allanite, monazite and xenotime, which also include within their structure substituted thorium isomorphic, was pointed out. The iron ore was processed by crushing, grinding and magnetic separation in order to obtain magnetite concentrates. The environment was affected by pollution generated by the mining activities. In 1995 due to the economic reasons, it was decided to cease mining exploitation and remediate the area. The paper presents the ecological impact caused by mining activities on a number of environmental targets and the population. The pollution sources, namely sterile dumps and mine waters are characterized (from the physical, chemical and radiometric point of view); the pollution pathways and theirs effects on potential targets, namely soil, vegetation, hydrographic network and population are identified as well. The degree of pollution due to all sources was assessed and maps of pollution sources distribution were generated. The supplementary effective doses for the population were assessed using rigorous scenarios and considering all exposure pathways. The rehabilitation plan includes solutions for dumps geometrization, covering and revegetation as well as mine waters management.

To help local governments plan for long-term supplies of sand and gravel for buildings and infrastructure, the Utah Geological Survey is assessing natural aggregate resources (mainly sand and gravel) in the St. George, Utah area. Whereas much of the aggregate in the study area is adequate for road-base construction, high-quality aggregate for Port- land cement concrete is limited due to geology, and also due to land administration and environmental issues. Virgin River alluvial gravels southwest of St. George are generally poor sources of aggregate because they contain clasts of soft sediments and soluble minerals derived from Mesozoic rocks. Elsewhere, widespread secondary calcium carbonate (caliche), as rinds and matrix in gravel, lower the quality of material. Young river-terrace deposits in Fort Pearce Wash, and along the Virgin River above St. George are the primary sources of sand and gravel for the area. Alluvial fans on the east side of the Beaver Dam Mountains, and on the west side of the Hurricane Cliffs are also sources of aggregate. Stream-channel deposits associated with "inverted valleys" north of the towns of St. George and Hurricane, Utah, and older pediment gravels on the west flank of the Beaver Dam Mountains may be future sources of high-quality aggregate. Accelerated urban development during the 1980s and early 1990s has caused St. George and other communities in Washington County to encroach upon sand and gravel pits originally located in rural, undeveloped areas. Urban residents often view nearby sand and gravel operations as undesirable neighbors and pressure elected officials to close the pits. Pit closures effectively eliminate the remaining reserve from the sand and gravel resource base of the area. More- over, resources may also be lost as new homes are built upon undeveloped sand and gravel deposits. The St. George area is particularly susceptible to loss of aggregate resources because high-quality natural aggregate for construction is already in short supply. Moreover, most of the land in the study area is administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and subject to various land-use restrictions. Much of this public land cannot be developed for mineral materials, such as sand and gravel, because of federal regulations protecting rare plants and animals, archaeological sites, and important watershed areas. Of particular concern to resource development are areas designated as Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, Wilderness Areas, and Wilderness Study Areas. Protection for Endangered Species is a critical element in all planning efforts. Those species present in the St. George area or in areas near- by include: the desert tortoise, southwestern willow flycatcher, Virgin River chub, and dwarf bearclaw poppy. As the St. George area is depleted and/or deprived of sand and gravel resources through extraction and urbanization respectively, construction costs will rise unless conservation measures are instituted. To avoid the loss of aggregate resources, the UGS is pursuing a program of data gathering and field surveying of surficial deposits to determine tonnage and quality of the remaining sand and gravel resources. The resource information from this program will help land planners, developers, and government officials make informed decisions concerning urban development throughout the region.

The mining method at the Cannon mine uses heading and bench stopes, which are subsequently backfilled with cemented high-strength fill before pillar removal. The dimensions of the pillars are 7.3 m wide by 19.8 to 28.9 m high (24 ft by 65 to 95 ft). They require careful blasting in order to not damage the rock, compromising pillar strength and complicating later removal. Additionally, the proximity of dwellings makes vibration control a must for good neighbor relations. A blast monitoring study was conducted in order to optimize bench blasting practices to maximize fragmentation, reduce costs, and to minimize wall damage and ground vibration. The Cannon mine is a joint venture between Asamera Minerals (US) Inc., a 92% owned subsidiary of Gulf Canada Ltd., and Breakwater Ltd. Asamera is the operator. The mine is located at the south end of Wenatchee, WA, a town of roughly 45,000 people on the eastern flanks of the Cascade Mountains. Gold is the primary product at the mine. The rock is extracted using a sublevel end-slicing method on 15 m (50 ft) lifts, with subsequent backfilling and pillar removal. The stope widths, dictated by rock conditions at 7.3 m (24 ft), are the same in the primaries as in the pillars, or secondaries.

TBM (TBM) mining in urban areas particularly under low overburden is a big challenge to design and excavate. During excavation of the Lucknow Metro project, in Uttar Pradesh, India the metro authorities encountered a design stretch where the TBM had to cross a sewer canal crossing of 15 m length under overburden of less than 1 m. Not only the stability of TBM due to uplift was of concern but also the stability of both banks. Most structures on the canal banks were non-engineered structures whose stability due to vibration of TBM was also of concern. Due to these risks, a method was proposed that met stability requirements for both ground and superstructures. The design was practical and cost effective to construct, and a collaborative exercise between the client, contractor and designer that took approximately 18 months to implement.

"Violent damage to overlying strata can occur above the large mined-out space left by high-intensity longwall mining. For the safe mining under the aquifer and surface water body, it is imperative to investigate the criteria of overburden failure degree due to high-intensity mining. In this paper we present the characteristics of high-intensity longwall mining panels and overburden critical failure. Based on the geological and mining conditions of a high-intensity mining panel, 3D numerical models that consider the maximum horizontal principal stress and minimum horizontal stress and their orientations with the panel advance direction were established by using the 3DEC software. Sizes of the panel reaching the critical failure of the overburden under different mining thicknesses (3.5 m, 6.5 m, 9.5 m, 12.5 m, and 15.5 m) were analyzed. Further, criteria of overburden critical failure were proposed for the high-intensity mining. The coefficient of overburden critical failure (Cf) is the ratio of the strike length (Ls) to the mining depth (H). Through curve fitting analysis, a fitting equation between Cf and mining thickness was obtained. The results showed that overburden failure criterion with high-intensity mining panel is 0.38 = Cf = 0.97 with different thicknesses. Field measurements validated the results from the numerical models.INTRODUCTIONHigh-intensity longwall mining refers to a coal mining method with thick coal seam, large panel width, fast face advance rate, and severe damage to the overburden and surface in China (Guo et al., 2018). Violent movement of the roof rock and severe damage to overlying rock strata occur in the large mined-out space left by a high-intensity longwall mining panel, which is a 3D (three-dimensional) structure layout with highly non-uniform stress distribution. Recognition of such fact a will facilitate this overlying rock strata failure problem investigation (Peng et al., 2019).The studies of overlying strata failure due to longwall coal mining have been reported by some scholars with different methods. Kang et al. (2018) studied the sudden massive roof collapse during longwall coal retreat mining by a large-scale two-dimensional physical model and a UDEC numerical model. Ghabraie et al. (2015) researched the mining-related strata movement by applying the three-dimensional laser scanner, optical transducer, and digital image processing techniques to two-dimensional physical models. Wang et al. (2015) analyzed the structural characteristics and fracture failure process of overlying hard and thick main roof by a 3DEC numerical model; this study also investigated the geostress reduction and permeability enhancement redistribution of the adjacent coal measure strata by FLAC3D. Guo et al. (2012) performed a three-dimensional finite element analysis and shared some insights into the dynamic interaction between mining induced strata stress changes, failures, and gas flow patterns. Meng, Shi, and Li (2016) proposed a 3D coupling model between stress and permeability, investigating the dynamics of a stress, permeability coefficient using FLAC3D. Khanal, Guo, and Adhikary (2019) used the 3D numerical modelling approach (COSFOW) to investigate the strata deformation and the change in permeability in the overburden strata due to the underground extraction. However, few studies considered the influence of the horizontal stress on overburden failure in a high-intensity longwall mining panel, and the critical failure criteria of overlying rock strata is unclear."

The ability to predict the effects of longwall mining on topography and surface structures is important for any coal company in making permit applications and anticipating potential mining problems. The sophisticated finite element model described and evaluated in this paper is based upon five years of underground and surface observations and evolutionary development of modeling techniques and attributes. The model provides a very powerful tool to address subsidence and other ground control questions. The model can be used to calculate post-mining stress and strain conditions at any horizon between the mine and the ground surface. This holds the promise of assisting in the prediction of mining-related hydrological effects.
