The first Cyanisorb process was constructed in 1991 at the Golden Cross Mine in Waihi, New Zealand to recover cyanide from CIL tailings. The Golden Cross operation consists of an open-pit and underground gold mine with a conventional crushing, grinding and CIL circuit with Merrill Crowe zinc precipitation for gold recovery. Prior to disposal in the tailings pond, slurry tailings are stripped of cyanide at a pH of approxi­mately 7.5 using the Cyanisorb process. Mill throughput is approximately 2,500 tons per day (TPD), and CIL slurry tailings average 37% solids with a specific gravity of 1.27. CIL tailings WAD cyanide average 150 mg/L. The Cyanisorb process recovers approximately 85% of tailings WAD cyanide, produc­ing a slurry effluent with approximately 20 mg/L WAD cyanide. A second Cyanisorb process was commissioned at the NERCO DeLamar silver mine in southwest Idaho in May, 1992. The ore milling and silver recovery operation consists of crushing, grinding, a CIP circuit and Merrill Crowe zinc precipi­tation for silver recovery. Cyanide recovery is from clarified tailings with WAD cyanide ranging from 3 50 mg/L to 600 mg/L, producing an effluent with less than 30 mg/L to 60 mg/L WAD cyanide. Due to the presence of zinc-cyanide complexes in mill tailings resulting from the Merrill Crowe process, cyanide is stripped at a pH of approximately 5.5.

An investigation into the source mechanism of mining-induced seismic activity plays a vital role in understanding the various modes of failure observed in the underground deep-level South African mining environment. The seismic events data for this study was captured by the mine-wide seismic system operating at Kloof Gold Mine. This system comprises 40 4.5 Hz tri-axial geophones sampling at 6 kHz installed at locations that surround the stopes mining the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR), Main Reef (MR) and Kloof Reef (KR). A set of 103,753 mining-related seismic events (-3.0≤ ML ≤2.7) that occurred during 2017 and 2018 was selected for this study. The mining depth of these seismic events ranges from 1600 – 4200 m; most located close to stopes mining the VCR ore body. The main criteria used to select a subset of events for detailed analysis were the number of stations that recorded the seismic event and the azimuthal distribution of the sensors.

Nearly 17 years ago a major producer of synthetic zeolites started an extensive exploration program for natural zeolite deposits which resulted in the discovery of over 170 occurrences in the western United States. A few years later several of the other producers and consumers of synthetic zeolites also started similar exploration programs. Since then, small quantities of natural zeolite minerals have been produced from at least 12 deposits in the United States. Of these the Bowie deposit, about 13 miles north of Bowie, Arizona, is the most important,having produced over 5,000 tons of vitric tuff zeolitically altered to the mineral chabazite and minor amounts of the minerals erionite and clinoptilolite. Mining Districts and Mineral Deposits of Arizona compiled by Charles A. Mardirosian, Consulting Geologist, estimates the value of the total production from the Bowie deposit at a very conservative $2,000,000. Unfortunately, none of the companies responsible for the discovery and the initial production of natural zeolites made any effort to develop the high volume, low cost applications of this unique mineral raw material. Instead, they developed only the high unit value uses to supplement their existing synthetic molecular sieve product lines. With the producers of synthetic zeolites thinking in pounds and not in tons, further development of natural zeolite deposits stagnated for over a decade.

This chapter on the square-set system of mining em¬bodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the chapter were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from information circu¬lars prepared by consulting engineers to the USBM on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Al¬though some of the properties discussed are no longer in operation, the methods described are still valid. The square-set system of mining has been very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the US. It is mainly employed for extracting rela¬tively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and¬fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50% of the ore may be extracted by square setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage has been mined yearly by square setting, prin¬cipally in the western states. Due to the high cost of timber and the relatively low average production per manshift, this system generally is not used when the ore can be mined by some other method; it usually is adopted as a last resort. Square setting, however, has a special field in that ore bodies not minable by other methods can be stoped by this system. As square-set mining was widely known, there was a tendency for years to use the method regardless of its suitability. With the increasing need for economy and the development of other methods, square setting has been superseded in many mines by cut-and-fill, top slic¬ing, or sublevel caving methods. The term square-set mining as used in this chapter includes all stoping methods in which the space made by the removal of the ore is timbered with framed sets. The sets usually are square in horizontal section. The stope may or may not be filled with waste rock as stoping progresses. HISTORY OF THE SQUARE-SET SYSTEM Prior to 1860, open-stope methods with stulls for casual support accounted for most of the mineral pro¬duction from underground mines. Attempts to mine large ore bodies that required artificial support resulted in disastrous cave-ins and loss of life. The art of mining received a tremendous impetus following the introduc¬tion of methods for mining the bonanza ore body which was discovered in 1860 in the Ophir mine on the Comstock lode, Virginia City, NV. This ore body was phe¬nomenally rich and eventually proved to be 122 m (400 ft) high, 27 m (90 ft) wide, and 98 m (320 ft) long. The mining of this large high-grade ore body taxed the best engineering talent of the time; the problem was finally solved by Philip Deidesheimer. According to Eliot Lord (1882): "At the 50-foot level the vein of black sulphurets was only 3 or 4 feet thick, and could be readily extracted through a drift along its line, propping up the walls and roof when necessary by simple uprights and cap-posts. As the ledge descended the sulphuret vein grew broader until, at the depth of 175 feet, it was 65 feet in width, and the miners were at a loss how to proceed, for the ore was so soft and crumbling that pillars could not be used to support the roof as in coal mines. They spliced timbers together to hold up the caving ground; but these jointed props were too weak and ill-supported to with¬stand the pressure upon them, and were constantly broken and thrown out of place. The dilemma was a curious one. Surrounded by riches, they were yet un¬able to carry them off and their mass of black sulphurets bade fair to become a white elephant on their hands. The Ophir Company began to wish themselves less for¬tunate, as their miners narrowly escaped burial day after day in their attempts to stope out the ore. "A young mining engineer, Philip Deidesheimer, was in charge of a quartz mine in Georgetown, El Dorado County, Calif., in the autumn of 1860, when this serious check to the development of the lode occurred. At the request of William F. Babcock, a trustee of the Ophir Company, Mr. Deidesheimer left his California mine and crossed the mountains with a letter from the direc¬tors of the Ophir Company, authorizing him to inspect the workings of their mines and make such changes in the method of timbering as should seem to him expe¬dient. After examining the vein he designed, in the course of a few weeks, a system of timbering which proved to be exactly adapted to the requirements of the work. Experiments which he had previously made in California gravel and quartz mines furnished the out¬line of his plan. This was to frame timbers together in rectangular sets, each set being composed of a square base, placed horizontally, formed of four timbers, sills, and crosspieces from 4 to 6 feet long, surmounted at the corners by four posts from 6 to 7 feet high, and capped by a framework similar to the base. The cap pieces forming the top of any set were at the same time the sills or base of the next set above. These sets could readily be extended to any required height and over any given area, forming a series of horizontal floors, built up from the bottom sets like the successive stories of a house. The spaces between the timbers were filled with waste rock or with wooden braces, forming a solid cube when¬ever the maximum degree of firmness was desired. By adjustments of these sets the ore bodies along the line of the lode were extracted with comparative ease and security." Most mining methods are evolved slowly and are the result of the combined efforts of a number of minds; Deidesheimer's feat was remarkable in that his system was immediately successful. Microtunneling methods were utilized beneath pile-supported clarifier basins to replace settlement damaged sludge drain lines at the Jones Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To minimize the risk of blockage and expensive recovery of a microtunnel boring machine against pipe piles or construction debris, a Soltau RVS 80 was utilized. This machine allowed the alignment to be initially bored with guided 114-mm diameter rods to ensure proper alignment and lack of obstructions. Casing pipe was then installed by jacking 1-m long, 305-mm diameterclay pipe along the rods and behind an auger head. This case history also discusses how 2.4-m diameter precast concrete pipe was used as a one-pass sinking caisson for workshafts and new cleanout manholes.

To gain insight into the current status of pillar design practice in the underground coal mines of United States, a survey has been undertaken in the late 1993 and early 1994. A total of 552 room-and-pillar mines and 75 longwall mines have been surveyed to collect general, geological and mine plan information. The collected information are critically analyzed with special emphasis on the pillar design criteria adopted in these mines. A safety factor analysis has also been carried out for the pillars in room-and -pillar mines.

In recent years, the diminishing supply of natural gas has led energy suppliers and consumers to consider making synthetic natural gas from coal. A number of processes have been devised to produce gas from coal; many of these have been operated at the pilot stage and some have been operated commercially. Each process has specific coal feed stock requirements with respect to size consist and moisture content. The purpose of this presentation is to compare the estimated costs for coal handling, live storage, size reduction and drying facilities that would be required for delivery of coal feedstock to different gasification processes.

Solvent extraction as a method of purifying and concentrating metal values from solution has become a standard hydrometallurgical operation for recovery of both uranium and vanadium, and within the past two years it has been put into operation in a commercial plant for recovery of copper from leach solutions. In this first full scale solvent extraction plant for recovery of copper operated by Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation near Miami, Arizona, a kerosene solution of an organic compound, LIX-64® is used to selectively extract the copper from the dilute acidic copper sulfate leach liquor obtained from heap leach operations. The copper is back extracted from the solvent into a stripping solution which is fed to an electrolysis circuit producing cathode copper for sale.

The mutual growth of the rare earth industry and the Mountain Pass Operations was no coincidence. It was the commercial availability of rare earths on a scale first made possible by the capacity of the Mountain Pass Operations that spurred research and development efforts toward new applications for rare earths. The first important demand on Mountain Pass was europium oxide for the activation of red phosphor for color television tubes in 1964. Since that time, other rare earths have become even more important, and Molycorp is continuing to supply an ever widening variety of rare earth concentrates and compounds. We enjoy saying that rare earths are not really rare, and that they are not earths, either. Of course, we are talking about the 15 metallic elements with atomic numbers 57-71, called the lanthanides, which occur in nature always together in very similar proportions. Their scarcity can be gauged by the fact that there is more cerium in the earth's crust than there is tin, and more europium than cadmium. The word "earths" comes from the early chemical term for oxide. The rare earths were discovered as oxides, and the term has persisted.

During the past two years, there has been an increasing acceptance of process automation among ferrous, non-ferrous and non-metallic rock processing operations in an attempt to keep total unit costs in line in a market situation where labor and material costs are rising almost daily. Previous technical papers (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) have described, in considerable detail, instrumentation and automatic control devices that have been successfully applied in a wide variety of crushing and grinding facilities. While many of the basic control philosophies that evolved almost ten years ago remain essentially unchanged, new components and devices have been developed during the past two years that permit these philosophies to be better implemented in operating plants. Some of these devices and their application will be discussed with particular emphasis placed in describing the basic control philosophy employed as well as some of the hardware or components comprising typical crushing and grinding circuit control systems. Before any instrumentation or automatic control system can be successfully devised for a specific facility, there must be a clear understanding and agreement by supplier and user as to the control system objective. In the case of a crusher feed rate control system, the objective is generally to maximize thru-put of a given finished product size. While this is often the case in a grinding circuit automatic control system, the reasons may be entirely different. Taconite processors whose end product is to be pelletized, generally attempt to control their grind within narrow limits to optimize balling action. Other milling operations are more concerned with obtaining metallurgical liberation and can, in many cases, tolerate wider swings in finished grind.

Previous studies on semi-soluble minerals such as calcite (1) and apatite(2) and sparingly soluble minerals such as quartz (3,4) have given evidence for significant changes in their electrokinetic properties as a function of aging time. Such changes are relevant to mineral processing operations where the crushed ore particles might not have yet reached equili¬brium with the water that it is in contact with. In order that these changes be studied under controlled experimental conditions for long periods unattended or with fairly less intermittant attention, a streaming potential apparatus with an automatic streaming system was constructed. Also, a new streaming potential cell was incorporated into the system so that the effect of temperature, a variable coming into increasing usage in mineral processing operations(5), could also be studied. Conventional streaming cells(6) cannot be safely employed to conduct studies as a function of temperature since they have many glass joints that are prone to leakage, parti¬cularly under pressure, in the course of an experiment. This paper describes the new apparatus and some typical results that have been obtained with it far temperature effects.

Modern surface mining operations are always seeking for minimizing costs while increasing production rates, among the optimization of other specific tasks that have an impact on the economics of the mine. Specifically, the cost related to the production fleet operation (shovels and trucks), the maximization of the overall performance of the equipment, and the uncertainty to meet the goals at the end of the operational time horizon are always topics of discussion with no apparent simple answer. On the other hand, truck-shovel dispatch systems based on Linear/Non-Linear Programming Algorithms have been in operation since mid-1990’s with different levels of success depending on the correct arrangement of operational resources and the complexity of the mine, but having in most cases some important shortcomings related to the way these systems deal with the decision making of the operational objectives, being necessary to have a human agent (dispatcher) to guide the system when the operational parameters change, creating the possibility of suboptimal decisions due to the human factor. This paper discusses the implementation of a novel methodology based on AI techniques to assist in the decision making of the best goal selection when operating a Fleet Management System, taking into consideration time periods as variables and integrating them as part of the analysis, providing a better overview of the forecast plan completion with respect to previous production numbers and evaluating best alternative to handle future events to minimize losses or maximize profits, resulting in better truck assignments, minimum shovel idle times and overall productivity improvements of the operation at the end of the time horizon.

"Lead ions (lead nitrate) were introduced to modify the surface properties of scheelite, effectively and selectively improving the flotability of scheelite, with benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) serving as the collector. A series of experiments about the mode of addition and the ratio of lead ion to BHA were conducted and indicated Pb-BHA complexes were the active species responsible for the flotation. And two adsorption models of BHA on the surface of scheelite were established. For both the two adding methods, some kind of complexes formed by lead ions and BHA played a key role in the flotation process. Zeta potential, FTIR, and XPS studies indicated that the adsorption amount and intensity of BHA on the surface of scheetlie were larger by adding the reagents as a mixture. The mixed addition is conducive to form Pb-BHA complexes and improve the adsorption efficiency of BHA on the surface of scheelite, as well as the recovery of scheelite. INTRODUCTION Scheelite, as an important tungsten-bearing mineral, is nowadays utilized mainly by flotation (YIN and WANG, 2014; Sun et al., 2011; Gao et al., 2015; Gao et al., 2015). Flotation separation of scheelite from calcium minerals creates difficulties because of the existence of the same cation in the minerals and similar physico-chemical characteristics such as solubility, hardness, specific gravity, point of zero charge (PZC), etc. (Arnold and Warren, 1974; Deng et al., 2016; Deng et al., 2015; Ozcan and Bulutcu, 1993a; Yongxin and Changgen, 1983). The conventional collectors used in the flotation of scheelite ores are generally fatty acids or fatty acid derivatives (Bo et al., 2015; Oliveira and Sampaio, 1988; Shi et al., 2014; Sivamohan, 1988; Yongxin and Changgen, 1983). It is difficult to separate scheelite, especially from calcite, with these reagents because the adsorption mechanism of these collectors occurs through chemisorption of the oleate ion onto the mineral surface (Atademir et al., 1979; Changgen and Yongxin, 1983; Hiçyìlmaz et al., 1993; Hu et al., 2011). Therefore, it is almost impossible to separate them by fatty acid flotation without using any selective depressant. Although oleoyl sarcosine was used as a selective collector in the flotation of fluorite and siliceous scheelite ores (Ozcan and Bulutcu, 1993b; Ozcan et al., 1994), this selectivity is inadequate for a low-grade calcitic scheelite ore. Unfortunately, reagents such as organic colloids (dextrine, starch), quebracho, sodium phosphates, sodium silicate solutions containing polyvalent cations (hydrosols), etc. (Bo et al., 2015; Schubert et al., 1990; Shi et al., 2014; Yongxin and Changgen, 1983), used for calcite depression also depress scheelite to a large extent. Cationic collectors, such as amine and quarternary ammonium (Yang et al., 2015) and collector mixture (Gao et al., 2015) have been used to improve the scheelite flotation. However they have not been applied in industry due to the poor separation from silicate minerals."

The Ontario Division of The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, operates five underground mines and one open pit on the rim of the Sudbury Basin located in the Province of Ontario, 230 miles northwest of Toronto. Four of the mines, Frood-Stobie, Creighton, Murray and Garson, lie on the South range of the Basin within a 10-mile radius of the City of Sudbury; the fifth mine, Levack, is on the North range, about 30 miles northwest of the city. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper, the principal minerals being pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Other elements recovered from the ores in varying quantities are platinum, palladium, ruthenium, iridium, rhodium, cobalt, selenium, tellurium, iron, sulphur, gold and silver. In 1962, the total underground ore production was over 10,800,000 tons which was mined mainly by blasthole and caving methods with the remainder by cut-and-fill, square set, and undercut-and-fill techniques.

Lime made in a coal-fired, rotary kiln has two distinct parts: the interior of the pebble which constitutes about 90% to 95% of the mass, and the surface dust layer which is the remaining 5% to 10%. Uncalcined carbonate and impurities in the product may be present and will not contribute to the hydration reaction. Sulfur, in the form of calcium sulfate, inhibits the hydration reaction out of all proportion to its actual weigh-percent concentration (perhaps more than 100 times). If the stone contains dolomite, this will also inhibit the reaction as its rate of hydration may be nearly 3 orders of magnitude slower than that of calcium oxide. Early in the hydration reaction dolomite appears practically inert, but given sufficient time, it will hydrate. The heat of reaction is nearly the same as for calcium oxide, but the time necessary for complete hydration may be hours; whereas for calcium oxide it is only fractions of a second. The dust layer on the surface also inhibits hydration as it contains a collection of compounds which have low heats of hydration. This layer can tie up additional calcium and delay or prevent its reaction. In addition to these chemical processes, an important physical characteristic of the lime is its specific surface area. This is effected by the thermodynamics of calcination and the original stone grain chemistry. All of these factors are agglomerated in the gross slaking rate of lime. The total hydration of the chemical complex that is called commercial lime can be more easily understood by considering the individual reactions and combining them to form a more comprehensive picture of the situation. Calcium oxide and magnesium oxide hydrate similarly, differing only in their reaction kinetics. Dolomite, however, reacts differently than a simple mixture of calcium oxide and magnesium oxide as its hydration is strongly influenced by calcination thermo-dynamics and stone grain structure. Finally, the dust hydration and composition should be examined Understanding these reactions enables one to examine hydration reaction graphs with more insight into the factors which determine their shape.

The exchange of heat from wall rock to ventilating air was studied in a cross-cut driven through fresh rock on the 4600 level of the Kelley Mine, Six- teen thermocouple probes, 10 inches long, twenty-three probes, 7 feet long, and five probes, 50 feet long, were emplaced in the walls soon after blasting and wall -rock temperatures were monitored intermittently over a two-year period to determine heat loss from the wall rock. Temperatures, humidity, and velocity measurements were made of the air at the same times to determine heat gain. An important but less well-defined variable was the heat transfer by water entering the crosscut from fractures and leaving in the ditch. The balance of heat in and heat out at each probe station is within an acceptable range. Theoretical and empirical models for heat flux into a cylindrical opening fit the data reasonably well, also.

Over the years, numerous studies have been conducted to characterize the floatability of coal pyrite. Unfortunately, many of the results obtained using isolated samples of coal pyrite are not directly applicable to actual coal flotation systems where liberation and entrainment may be the major factors affecting pyrite rejection. In this paper, the association of pyrite with other coal constituents is investigated, and the data are presented for feed and product streams obtained from release analysis tests. Release analysis is used to minimize the effects of entrainment. Particle distributions for each stream are presented as functions of size and composition in order to discern the behavior of free and composite particles.

Bauxite can be regarded as a mixture of hydrated aluminium oxides the predominant constituent - and oxides of iron and titanium, silica and silicates. Heterogeneous and non-crystaline, most bauxites vary in average composition from one deposit to another both in terns of impurities as well as the proportion of Gibbsita and the Monohydrates Diaspore and Boehmite. Iron levels (as Fe2O3) can vary from less than 1% to as high as 30% with the alumina content ranging from 40 to 6o%,. Gore than 90% of all bauxite mined in Guyana is used as feed for the - production of refractory grade calcined bauxite. There are -however, several speciality grades used in various industrial applications and these are characterised by the quality of the bauxite in particular ;,with regards to iron and silica levels which generally have to be low. The main speciality grades are designated Refractory, Abrasive and Chemical. Bauxitte is also used in the production of nigh alumina cements,, activated bauxite end in the manufacture of electrical insulators.

This paper presents an overview of surface mining activity in the Canadian oil sands and how the mine operators interact with the province of Alberta's Mine Financial Security Program (MFSP), which took effect April 1, 2011. The MFSP approach to reclamation assurance results in the government of Alberta sharing a portion of reclamation liability through the majority of an oil sand mine's life. In order to determine the potential fiscal magnitude of this shared liability, an examination of the expected costs of oil sands reclamation activities through a study of corporate asset retirement obligation (ARO) liabilities and other corporate disclosures is presented. The province of Alberta's Environmental Protection Security Fund (EPSF), which formerly secured oil sands mine reclamation activities is discussed. Reclamation costs in the oil sands are poorly understood. The MFSP provides what it characterizes as a conservative estimate of C$75,000/ha, while corporate disclosures by Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. place expected costs at C$180,000/ha. There is significant risk associated with the apparent uncertainty surrounding reclamation costs.

This study applies a machine-learning technique known as multiclass logistic regression on a 10-year injury dataset from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to determine miners’ susceptibility to injury and to help identify significant risk factors associated with different classes of injury. The analysis identifies specific risk factors that influence a mineworker’s susceptibility to a given class of injury: nonfatal with no days lost or restricted activity; nonfatal with days lost and/or days of restricted work activity; and fatal and total permanent or partial permanent disability. These factors include miner’s age, mine type (coal versus noncoal), experience on the current job (years), shift start time, employment type (operator versus contractor), mining district and type of accident. The results of the analysis indicate that a miner’s experience on the job (the number of years worked in a current job) is a significant risk to injury occurrence, even for those with decades of total mining experience.
