Due to a tight ash constraint on the clean coal product and difficult middlings washability characteristics, a considerable amount of coal was being lost in the jig middlings at the Monterey No. 2 Mine. An investigation was conducted into circuitry to recover this lost coal with minimal effect on the total clean coal ash. A reverse two-stage hydrocyclone system cleaning at low specific gravities was selected. This system is currently recovering approximately 5.8 kg/s (23 tph) of 11.5% to 12.5% ash coal. The specific gravity of separation for the system is about 1.5 and the probable error is 0.13.

"As the concept of autonomous haulage systems (AHS) moves from proto-types to production-ready applications, the operating performance of the haul road will become ‘mission critical’ to the overall success of autonomy in mining. Deterioration in road performance will require remediation, human intervention and significant, albeit temporary, changes to operating procedures, to accommodate road maintenance. With autonomous trucks comes the opportunity to reduce road formation and operating width, and therefore generating potentially significantly reductions in stripping ratios and improvements to mine economics, but only if the design of the road, and it’s associated deterioration rate, is predictable and manageable, based both on the materials used to construct the road and the maintenance interventions to be carried out on the road. This paper presents the assessment of a digital photogrammetric approach to the characterization of a mine haul road surfacing, or wearing course material. Design and maintenance parameters for these roads are currently determined from physical particle size distribution (PSD) assessments of ‘in-road’ material. However, this approach does not accommodate the need, nor leverage the benefits from, AHS. The digital imaging approach is assessed in this paper, using two standard digital analysis software tools, together with in-service mine haul road wearing course samples and images which are assessed to determine the applicability and reliability of the approach to deliver a real-time assessment of haul road surfacing conditions and thus to identify the road maintenance interventions required to address deterioration. INTRODUCTION Enhancements in mine road design, construction and management for the past 20 or more years has largely been focused on short-term tactical needs. These improvements have not been matched by advances in the fundamental technologies that underpin mine road design and management, and although the quality of mine roads have probably increased, many of fundamental and longer-term issues have yet to be addressed. With AHS’s evolving from prototype to production applications, any decision to implement these systems in a mine requires a thorough evaluation of impacts, not only operational improvements, but the inter-connectivity of this autonomy technology to other organizational processes. In developing an understanding, the full interactions that may affect autonomous truck behaviour due to changes in various sub-systems or external environments, haul road conditions and operating performance is a key consideration. This is as true in autonomous as well as in conventional mine truck-based hauling systems where the mine haul road network is a critical and vital component of the production process."

This paper discusses a composite of two coal reserve studies, each of which made use of a computer-based modeling system to assist in an evaluation of multi-seam deposits. The model permitted simultaneous consideration of seam thickness, seam structure, overburden thickness, over-burden ratio, and quality parameters for sulphur content, ash content, BTU values and the EPA Compliance index. The model is designed for use by a non-programmer, geologist or mining engineer. It enables the user, from a computer terminal in his office, to specify constraints (for example maximum um sulphur and maximum- ash content, minimum seam thickness and minimum BTU rating), and produces a report showing the volume, quality and location of that part of the total in place deposit satisfying all the constraints.

Flotation of the carbonate, oxide and silicate minerals of copper (malachite, azurite, chrysocolla) has been the subject of much research in recent years, but few effective solutions to this problem have been found. With decreasing reserves of sulfide minerals, the economic recovery of these "oxides" appears to be an important source of copper for the future. Xanthates have been known for many years to be malachite collectors (1), but only at very high dosages, or at lower dosages following activation of the mineral by sulfide ion. Dewitt and Batchelder (2, 3) found that chelating agents such as certain oximes were collectors for malachite and azurite, but also required high reagent dosages. Fuerstenau (4) has suggested, for example, that potassium octylhydroxamate may be an effective collector for malachite, On the other hand, Balberyszski (5) has found that oxide minerals may be completely sulfidized at high temperatures with gaseous sulfur or H2S, and then floated with conventional collectors. None of the above approaches appear to offer an economically effective method for the direct flotation of these oxide minerals.

Incident investigation is of utmost importance in most high-risk industries. This study was undertaken to study the content of past investigation reports to determine the effectiveness of the incident investigations. The study uses a semi-quantitative method to assess the effectiveness of incident investigations in the Ghanaian mining industry by evaluating the quality of past investigation reports. The assessment tool consists of 5 elements with several indicators and rating scales for assessing the quality of an investigation report as a measure of the effectiveness of the investigation. The method was applied to 304 investigation reports of 3 Ghanaian large-scale gold mines, and the results correlated with incidence rates of the mines to determine if any relationship existed. The results showed that the mines differ significantly in the quality of their investigation reports, suggesting differences in the effectiveness of their investigations. In addition, the incidence rates of the mines negatively correlated with some elements of the assessment tool. In general, the method was found useful and revealed areas where improvement is needed. INTRODUCTION The importance of learning from incidents is well documented in the literature. For instance, some scholars regard learning from incidents as important for improving safety [1,2]. Thus, many organisations spend considerable resources in identifying lessons from incidents and subsequently on the process of improvement that follows the identification of lessons. It is therefore important for such organisations to determine the effectiveness of their learning from incidents processes, in order to identify specific areas where improvements are needed, so that interventions can be as specific as possible. The learning from incidents process models the plan-act-check-do approach of management systems, often consisting of four major stages, namely; data collection and incident analysis, planning interventions, implementing interventions and follow-ups and evaluation [3,2]. The investigating and analysis of incidents have been regarded as one of the vital stages of the learning process since it is the stage where lessons are identified [3,2,4]. It has also been noted elsewhere in the literature that results of the previous stage of the learning process are important for the next stage [3]. For example, ineffective incident analyses could result in the planning of ineffective remedial measures. One of the primary aims of incident investigations is to identify lessons from previous incidents which when implemented can prevent future recurrences or minimise the effects of future incidents. There is thus the need for organisations to assess the quality of their investigations periodically since it is one of the means they adopt to improve safety and the quality of remedial measures to some extent depends on the effectiveness of the investigations. Although previous studies [5,2] have assessed the effectiveness of the learning process, and some aspects of the learning process, such as incidents reporting, there is less focus on the effectiveness of incident investigations. The research described in this paper was therefore conducted to contribute to this gap, focusing more closely on incident investigation reports.

Thank you Mr. Stevens. It's a pleasure for me to be speaking to this meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME this afternoon, and the Gypsum, Association is grateful for the invitation. A brief word about who we are: the Gypsum Association is the trade association for the gypsum industry - the manufacturers of gypsum board and lath a-d plaster. We have a membership of eight companies. These eight companies produce about 90% of the gypsum products manufactured in the United States ... closer to 94% actually. Our headquarters is in Evanston, Illinois. We have an east coast office in Washington, D.C. where the eastern manager handles technical and building code matters and maintains liaison between all of the government agencies and departments and our industry. We also have a west coast office in Los Angeles where our west coast representatives is heavily involved with the Uniform Building Code and ICBO. And then in the Evanston office our manager of technical and building code services, Herb Carlsen, bites his nails and loses his hair over these problems and various other projects that come in, such as conversion to metric and various other things. We also have a research associate at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington who is currently concentrating his efforts on the combustibility of building materials. His studies involve current testing methods, definitions, data analysis, and proposed new testing methods,.' It is anticipated that this program will lead to a better understanding of non-combustibility of building materials and systems. I mentioned that our members represent over 90% of gypsum products,' manufactured in the United States; it might be well to point out a couple of statistics about what that really means. A modelling study has been carried out on the flotation of the Moinho (Portugal) polymetallic sulphide ore, based on pilot plant data. It shows that successfully modelling the flotation of such an ore needs to take into account not only the influence of particle size, but also that of the mineral liberation of the ore. The benefits deriving from the research have been twofold in that the study has: 1. Improved the understanding of (a) the response of the ore to froth flotation and (b) the influence of regrinding the zinc middlings; and 2. Provided models for the optimization of the industrial flotation circuits when the plant starts up in 1991.

Electric vehicles powered by lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are being developed by mining vehicle manufacturers as a replacement for diesel-powered vehicles. Explosion-proof (XP) enclosures are frequently employed to enclose electrical ignition sources in gaseous underground mines to prevent the spread of an internal methane-air explosion to a nearby explosive atmosphere. Due to thermal runaway (TR), Li-ion batteries have the potential to cause pressurized explosions in an enclosed structure. Past research has shown the potential for well-confined Li-ion cell TR to drive pressures beyond the conventional pressure specification for XP enclosures. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) used an Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC) to induce thermal runaway of Lithium Titanate or Lithium Titanium Oxide (LTO) type 18650 cells enclosed within containers with various volumes and found an inverse power relationship between the TR pressure and available free space. The results were similar in magnitude to that of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, which were used in prior testing. Temperatures, gas amounts, and TR pressure-rise rates were also recorded. The data indicate that with enough free space, the pressures can be lowered below the conventional pressure specification for XP enclosures.

Recently there has been much discussion of the use of pipelines for the long-distance transportation of solids. Many have come to recognize the economies inherent in pipeline transportation. The widespread movement of oil and gas at astonishingly low costs - a gallon of oil moves from Montana to New York for less than that for the delivery of a postcard - has spurred others to sturdy this mode of transportation. Most interested people are aware of the inherent advantages of pipelines - continuity and reliability of operations - low manpower requirements per ton mile - moderate capital costs per ton mile - low maintenance costs per ton mile - low operating costs per ton mile.

Large scale surface mining has a major impact on land use. Without reclamation, abandoned mining sites are usually less productive than before mining. With increasing and completetive land use demands in the United States, it becomes increasingly evident that multiple land use should be considered for all areas that will be mined, with special emphasis on coal, sand, gravel, and stone. The mining of these commodities affects the largest land areas and the latter two are commonly mined near population centers where high land-use pressures justify serious consideration of multiple use. Typically, sequential use will mean restoration of the mined land or at least transformation of the land into a useable state. Determination of land reclamation capability is a viable approach to planning reclamation of surface mined land. The natural resource base--geology, soil, and water--controls the type and intensity of land-use practices which can be sustained following mining. Evaluating physical limitations can eliminate consideration of uses which would severely impair the environment or which are impractical. This approach provides for an environmentally and economically sound land use at very little cost. In addition, it can save or make money for the mining company and landowner. Sand and gravel is an especially significant resource because it is mined throughout the entire country and commonly extracted near cities. Increasing urban growth and industrial activity require increased supplies of sand and gravel. This translates into expanded surface mining and an increase of disrupted land. Oftentimes this land is within an urban area and has potential for real estate or water-based activities. INTRODUCTION Insofar as I am aware, the term rock mechanics was not in the English dictionary in 1930 when I started my graduate program at West Virginia University. Hence, I never thought that I was undertaking studies in rock mechanics when I undertook to write a thesis on the physical properties of West Virginia coal. In this case, the subject was primarily concerned with the compressive strength of coal, the elasticity of the coal, the physical weathering properties of the coal and its friability. These days investigations of rocks pertaining to such properties are included in the term "rock mechanics". Other than this aspect, the principle interest in this part of my program was that I became interested in the strength of coal from the standpoint of structural purposes, and also became cognizant of its elastic properties as well as its energy storing properties. This research also tied in with a remark that Professor Lawall made in a Mining Methods class in 1928 when he remarked that a peculiar thing was happening in the southern part of West Virginia, namely, in the Pocahontas coal field. His remarks were to the effect that pillars were blowing up in the mines and when asked why he replied the cause was not known. The failure of three-inch coal specimens, especially those in stronger coal, in non-hydraulic actuated testing machines was reminiscent of his description of those pillar bursts or bumps.

FIPR-sponsored research will playa critical role in enhancing the competitiveness of the Florida phosphate industry as ore grade declines and environmental restrictions tighten. FIPR's program seeks to improve surface mining and pipeline transportation while reducing the energy cost for pumping phosphate matrix. The development of a reliable on-line analyzer and a modern process control strategy will result in improved processing efficiency. Significant improvement in overall efficiency will also be realized as the industry adopts column flotation technology. Economic acidulation of high-Insol rock will allow the industry to adopt simplified flotation flowsheets thereby reducing operating costs. Various applications of phosphogypsum would save the industry millions of dollars in constructing and closing gypsum stacks.

The Brunswick Mine, a Division of Noranda Inc., produces zinc, lead, copper, and bulk lead-zinc concentrates through underground mining of a large massive sulphide deposit. The mining method employed is longhole open stoping with delayed backfilling. In 1996 Brunswick began a review of its mining methods and backfilling operations. In 1997 the decision was made to convert the backfill system from cemented and uncemented rockfill to paste backfill prepared from mill tailings. This paper will describe the features of the backfill preparation and distribution systems, review the handling of technical issues, and discuss experiences since plant commissioning.

In this article, the cementation of major impurities from zinc sulphate leach solution by the addition of zinc dust was studied by considering different parameters including time, mesh size, and percentage of excess zinc dust. The output obtained from various experiments was utilized for the design of experiments. A multi-level categorical factorial design with a quadratic model was employed during this study. Results were predicted to minimize the concentration of impurity metals in the solution by altering the parameters. Furthermore, these predicted results were validated by performing another experiment. Successfully, it showed that the predicted and experimental data values were close to each other. The predicted optimized values were 40 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size for copper; 42 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size for cobalt; 37 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size for cadmium; and 34 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size zinc dust for nickel. At these optimized values, the experimental results showed 99.99%, 55.7%, 99.6%, and 76.6% cementation efficiencies for copper, cobalt, cadmium, and nickel respectively. The statistical design of experiments for the effective cementation of impurities corroborates the economic feasibility of optimizing parameters for the proposed process.

Heat stress in underground coal mines is a major threat to the health and safety of the miners. Hence, managing heat and prediction of heat stress in advance is essential for maintaining a safe, healthy, and productive underground mine environment. In this study, an extensive ventilation survey has been carried out in three different deep and mechanized underground coal mines. The ventilation survey data are used to develop 3D simulation models with the VentSim™ software to predict the conditions that could cause heat stress in underground mine workings. The developed 3D models predicted well the wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT), a recognized indicator of potential heat stress, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.986, 0.994, and 0.993 for Mine-A, Mine-B, and Mine-C, respectively. Moreover, through 3D modelling, the applications of auxiliary ventilation and spot coolers to reduce the wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) for improving the underground workplace environment have been explored. The study demonstrated that auxiliary ventilation and spot coolers can help in significant reduction of heat stress conditions in an underground mine environment. By application of auxiliary ventilation, to increase air volumes, and spot coolers, the WBGT index in mining faces is reduced by 1.2–1.4 °C and 3.9–5.4 °C, respectively. Therefore, it is concluded that the spot coolers are more effective in reducing the heat stress conditions in hot and humid underground mine environments in comparison with auxiliary fan that is used to increase the air volume and velocity. This study opens up a new horizon of 3D simulations for heat stress management in underground mines. The outcome of this study will be useful for the researchers, mine operators, and environmentalists understanding the heat stress contributors and their control in underground mine environment.

It can be useful to model the mean grade values for a metal in mineral deposits containing that metal as representing the extreme value tail of a lognormal frequency distribution for the concentration values of the metal in rocks of all types. Results for copper and zinc in the Abitibi area of the Canadian Shield are compared to results previously obtained for the Canadian Appalachian Region. The lognormal model is also applied to a set of 162 large gold deposits in the Abitibi area. In the second part of the paper, 1311 large and small gold deposits in the Abitibi area are modelled as discrete events. By means of a newly developed spatial clustering model it is possible to predict the variances of random variables for frequencies of deposits in cells of different sizes.

[Agitation and transport of slurries have been investigated intensively for the past twenty years. It has been shown (1) that slurries have the properties summarized in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, and S. For a detailed exposition the reader is referred to the above reference and the bibliography, which, in turn, have extensive references and bibliographies. An interesting problem with which the senior author has been concerned with is the scab up of power requirements for slurry agitators operating in the laminar region with pseudo plastic materials. Pulps of shaly ores, after various chemical reactions in aqueous leaching systems, are often difficult to settle and filter if agitation is violent. In these cases agitation must be at a minimum, yet prevent [tling] such as in copper uranium ores. This mild agitation is on the laminar region.]

Stoping methods at the Homestake Gold Mine through 1978 had been traditional overhand cut-and-fill, shrinkage or square set. High costs, low-productivity and safety concerns prompted the mine to search for and adopt a "bulk mining" technique as a primary stoping method. Blasthole stoping had been successful but it is very development intensive, and was not suitable for the mine's accelerated mining program. Vertical Crater Retreat stoping was selected, and today accounts for over 50% of ore production. Case histories representing both the successes and failures of VCR stoping in the mine are discussed.
