Introduction The concept of in-the-wall haulage was formally introduced to the mining community in the early 1970s. The basic concept is simple. Rather than the traditional in-the-pit haulage/access ramp, single or twin ramps driven in the pit wall are used with crosscut connections on the working levels. The in-the-wall pit haulage system could be considered as part of the opening of a new mine, a way of completing to final depth an existing pit, or part of the transition from open-pit to underground mining with the ramp remaining as part of the access. This paper is intended to acquaint the reader, particularly mine planning engineers, with some of the possibilities presented by the concept. Nordstrom (1983) said, "In many countries, mining engineers are either open-pit or underground specialists and, hence, often don't consider the possibilities for combining the best aspects of each into a hybrid mining system." This is believed to be true. There are few "hybrid mines" employing, for example, open-pit methods with underground haulage systems. One reason is the variance with the experience of the mining company and the engineers involved. However, with today's low metal prices, innovative and unconventional thinking may be just what a property requires to remain in production. All the possible situations where an in-the-wall ramp might be considered cannot be presented here. Rather, a few examples will be discussed for illustration purposes. Potential savings in stripping costs A major cost in open-pit mining is associated with the removal of overburden and waste rock. Although much of this stripping cannot be avoided, the volume (V) associated with the presence of an in-pit haul road can be quite large, V 100 (pit depth) a (road width) 2 x road grade (%) As an example, consider a vertical ore body 400 m (1312 ft) long, 60 m (197 ft) thick, extending to a depth of 160 m (525 ft). Cross sections are shown in Fig. 1. Other data are: ore tonnage = 11 Mt (12 million st), ore density = 2.9 t/m3 (0.09 st per cu ft), waste rock density = 2.7 t/m3 (0.08 st per cu ft), road width = 20 m (66 ft), road gradient = 10%, and level interval = 10 m (33 ft). The evaluation has been made assuming that the pit slope (0) is constant around the pit except on the side with the haul road. On this side, the slope is decreased to allow for the road. Slope angles of 30° to 60° have been selected to indicate the dependence of stripping volume (V) on slope angle. The stripping at the ends have been calculated assuming representation by cones. The volume associated with the haul road is 2.6 Mm3 (92.8 million cu ft). A comparison of the strip volumes involved is shown in Table 1. As can be seen, the percent savings in strip volume varies from about 4% to 17% and depends greatly on the slope angle. It is perhaps more interesting to examine the savings in stripping costs that could then be used to cover the cost of the access ramp and the crosscuts for stripping costs of $3/m3 ($0.08 per cu ft). The cost with the road volume is 2.6 million x 3 = $7.8 million.

INTRODUCTION Located approximately 48 km (30 miles) south of Dallas, Texas, use to be the site of the Superconducting Super Collider. For those of you unfamiliar with the project, this was a multi-billion dollar project taken on by the U.S. Government for the further advancement of technology, medicine, and science. Major components of the project consisted of a Linear Accelerator known as the LINAC; three accelerating rings known as the Low Energy Boosters (LEB), Medium Energy Booster (MEB) and the High Energy Booster (HEB); the East and West Campuses where the Inner Reactor Halls would have been located; and the 87 km (54 mile) main collider tunnel. Unfortunately, this all came to an end on December 6, 1993, with the termination of the project due to the Government's cancellation of funds. This paper will deal with the two of the underground contracts before the termination. These two contracts were the 1122 contract which ran from N25 to N40 and the 1130 contract which ran from N40 to N55. (See figure 1) The 1122 contract was awarded to us in July of 1992 and consisted of the excavation and support of six (6) shaft varying in diameter from 5.5 m (18 feet) to 8 m (26 feet) and ranging from 39.6 m (130 feet) to 61 m (200 feet) deep and the driving of approximately 13,100 m (.43,000 If.) of main collider tunnel. The Bureau of Mines designed, constructed, and operated an 18-inch- diameter, fluidized-bed combustor for highly caking coals to evaluate the method for possible application to power generation. In initial tests, combustion was carried on successfully, with carbon losses as low as 0.8 percent. Coal ash was not satisfactory as a bed material, but mullite proved to be acceptable. Overall heat-transfer coefficients from the bed (-20 + 50 mesh mullite) to a water-cooled tube were about 75 Btu/hr-ft2- °F.

"A long-term mine production schedule optimization based on stochastic integer programming is presented that manages the risk due to geological variability and uncertainty while jointly considering mine profitability, truck fleet requirements and waste management. The evolution of the pit is controlled so that space within the mined-out pit is continuously provided to allow for tailings and waste rock to be replaced, thus minimizing the project’s environmental footprint. The method is applied at a taconite iron ore deposit and has a project net present value that is 16.9 percent higher than that of a conventional schedule and has a higher chance of meeting production forecasts. The stochastic schedule reduces equipment requirements by delaying waste mining and by mining selectively in order to meet plant ore feed requirements without stockpiling material, resulting in 23.7 and 26.2 percent lower mining capital and operating costs, respectively. IntroductionThe LabMag iron ore deposit is part of the Millennium Iron Range, a 210-km (130-mile) belt of taconite in northern Quebec and Labrador, Canada. LabMag has significant economic potential. It contains more than 3.3 Gt (3.6 billion st) of proven reserves at an average total iron content of 29.8 percent and is very low in impurities. However, on a project basis of 23 Mt/a (25 million stpy) of product, the required capital expenditure is estimated at more than $5 billion (SNC-Lavalin, 2014), which necessitates careful evaluation of all sources of risk. Resource estimation is one of the main sources of risk in a mining project as knowledge of the orebody is primarily based on drilling, which is often sparse because it is expensive. If the expected ore tonnages and qualities are not obtained when mining, the project cash flows are directly affected. The expected quantities and qualities of ore and waste are defined by the mine production schedule, which specifies the sequence of extraction and is dependent on the resource estimation. The goal of mine production scheduling is thus to maximize the expected profit, while also meeting all production targets and constraints, by creating an extraction schedule that is robust in the face of geological risk and has the highest chance possible of actually being realized."

The renaissance in extractive metallurgical practices for gold and silver recovery is far from over. This is one conclusion of a three year investigation into innovations in Cold & Silver Recovery by Randol International Ltd. (1981, 1983). The six volume reference report reviews a host of new processes and innovative applications of older metallurgical practices. Some of these were summarized by von Michaelis (1982, 1982a). There are several reasons to expect this renaissance to continue. One reason is the nature of gold and silver deposits. The list of known occurrences of These metals is very extensive. There are literally tens of thousands of prospects but over 99% of these are too low grade, too small or too refractory for a viable operation employing conventional processing.

A practical and economical flowsheet has been developed and demonstrated by integrating the packed column flotation with the GranuFlow process for fine coal recovery. Orimulsion, which was used as an additive, served a dual purpose: first in the flotation and second in the dewatering and granulation steps. The test results on the coal preparation effluent sample show that Orimulsion is flexible and compatible with fuel oil and various frothers used in the packed column. Clean coal with ash contents of 3.0, 3.7, 4.3 and 5.1% were produced from a head sample of 33% ash at combustible matter recoveries of 72.4, 81.1, 87.5, and 89.2%, respectively. Other advantages include high throughput, low moisture, improved handleability, and reduced dustiness of the dewatered coal, thus providing a very significant economic Incentive for the integrated process.

Diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems and biodiesel fuels are two of the most promising technologies available to the mining industry to reduce the exposure of underground miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM). A study has been conducted to estimate the potential of DPF systems and biodiesel blends to reduce DPM emissions from production vehicles. Results of testing three DPF systems in an isolated zone showed 88% to 99% reductions in elemental carbon concentrations. The test results also show that biodiesel blends, B20 and B50, reduced the elemental carbon concentrations in the mine air by 26 and 48 percent, respectively.

Shotcrete is a key initial rock support component used in underground mining and civil projects. The strength of shotcrete plays a vital role in providing and deciding the support adequacy. The strength of shotcrete is evaluated by its uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) test that is usually conducted on extracted core samples. Shotcrete cores are commonly extracted from the test panels along the direction of its application; thus, its strength perpendicular to the direction of application is often neglected. The true bearing strength of shotcrete is thereby ignored despite the fact that higher stresses act normal to the direction of its application. Although the anisotropic behavior of shotcrete is well reported, no study has reported extensive testing of this scale and nature. This study reports extensive testing of shotcrete cores extracted from tunnels of a mega hydroelectric project in Pakistan. The study reports 7- and 28-days strength tests of shotcrete cores. The research also investigates the anisotropic behavior of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete and suggests that shotcrete exhibits higher strength perpendicular to the direction of its application.

Basic design features, details of the face ventilation system, roof support and Operator protection system, certified lighting, and in-mine evaluation plans are presented for an Automated Extraction System (AES) that has been designed to fill needs which are present in the Mining Industry. The philosophy of design and proposed operation of the machine, as well as the relationships between these factors, are reviewed. The AES is designed to help overcome production problems resulting from the regulation of roof control, clean-up, ventilation, dust suppression, and operator protection required by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. The design permits more continuous operation and greatly improves operator safety. The machine is a full-face drum-type continuous miner which includes self-advancing, continuous temporary roof support and permanent roof support equipment. Onboard self-advancing face ventilation, dust suppression, and air scrubbing equipment are also included in the design. A further improvement over existing equipment is the incorporation of an automatic programmed cutting cycle control system. All mining functions including movements of the roof support system are handled by this automatic system.

Due to the immense volumes of municipal wastes that are generated in this nation every year, it has become imperative that effective measures be developed to utilize all or portions of these materials in a productive and efficient manner. Nany larger municipalities employ incineration to reduce the bulk of material to be removed to disposal sites: but, even after incineration, approximately one-fourth of the original waste material in the form of non-combustible residue and flyash remain. It has been found that the flyash fraction of the incinerator residue contains varying amounts of copper, silver, gold, aluminum, iron and titanium along with many other important metals. The serious loss of these natural resources contained within the flyash and the monetary expense of current disposal methods present a serious and rapidly increasing problem to the public and to the Federal Government. The growing emphasis upon environmental control, rapidly increasing urban population and "convenience packaging" 'with its attendant increased waste production has led to the initiation of a broad range of studies concerning municipal waste. For example, the U. S. Bureau of I-lines is investigating all aspects of the incineration of municipal waste under its solid waste disposal program.l "In-house" studies range from improved incinerator design to potential recovery and recycling of the various components within the incinerator residue. A major portion of the latter research is being performed at the U. S. Bureau of ;-lines, College Park, Maryland facility while grants for specific areas of study have been issued to several universities and research institutes. In addition, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare has supported programs examining the potential recovery of paper; glass, metals and other components of unincinerated refuse followed by disposal in sanitary landfills.

The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) features two 20 TeV counter rotating proton beams which will be housed in 87 km (54 miles) of tunnel. Four additional lower energy particle accelerators will be housed in 26 km (16 miles) of tunnel and underground structures. Physics experiments will be conducted in two underground detector halls approximately 67 m (220 feet) deep with footprints measuring about 30 m (100 feet) by 100 m (330 feet). Definition and design of underground facilities is advanced with construction of approximately one-third of the SSC program underway. This paper presents an overview and status of the SSC project.

INTRODUCTION From the first historical records of the discovery of uranium as an element and the attempted classification of its minerals in the early 18th century-through its first uses in pigmentation and the coloring of glasses and ceramic glazes-until 1939 when it was discovered that the isotope U235, was fissionable, uranium oxide in the form of pitchblende ores and concentrates (produced mainly in Bohemia, Canada, and the former Belgian Congo) in recent times was the source of uranium compounds incidental as byproducts to the recovery of radium from this invariable associated source. In 1938 this byproduct production from pitchblende concentrates was about 471 st of U3O8, with over 90% from Canada and the Belgian Congo and only 25.85 st from carnotite ores in the United States.1 Under the impetus of the Atomic Energy Commission's (AEC now part of the Energy Research Development Administration) domestic and foreign production incentives and buying programs, and as an initial assurance of atomic armament capability of the United States and the Free World, the growth of the uranium mining and milling industry burgeoned from 1952 to 1962. After a short period of decline, in the second decade and in large commitments beyond, it has again extended its capacity to meet ever-increasing fuel demands of atomic power generation by the electric utilities industry. In 1961 the peak production in the United States alone was 17,758 st of U3O8. Peak aggregate domestic and foreign deliveries of 34,581 st of U3O8 to the AEC occurred in 1960.z Canada's maximum delivery of 13,506 st of U308 was made in 1959. These peak and continued productions in the Free World are largely from: the Mesozoic (Jurassic) and Tertiary (Eocene) sandstones in the United States; the quartz pebble conglomerates of Canada and the Witwatersrand; pegmatites, Jurassic limestones, and Precambrian complexes, with less but significant production; the phosphoria, where byproduct production is minor. This uranium production in the form of precipitated concentrates has come from the milling of ores from these sources, both directly and by retreatment of gold cyanidation tailings on the Witwatersrand. Milling of crude ore has followed these processes: conventional crushing and size preparation, ore drying when required, salt roasting for high vanadium ores and byproduct vanadium recovery, carbonate or acid-leaching processes, classification sand-dine separations or countercurrent decantation (CCD) circuits and complete liquid-solids separations, resin-in-pulp (RIP) or liquid-liquid (solvent) ion-ex- change extractions, clarification of pregnant liquors, precipitation, filtration and washing, sodium and vanadium removals, and drying or roasting and packaging of the high-grade, high-purity uranium concentrate commonly referred to as "yellowcake." Coupled with the hazards and control of dust generation incident to conventional crushing and milling operations, more stringent control of airborne respirable and ingestible radioactive particulates and the protection of personnel against definitive external radiation are inherent to uranium milling. Impoundment and control of tailings and other effluents of uranium milling are more restrictive than in conventional practice, be- cause long-term disposal and containment of the uranium series of radionuclides, whether in solution or in solid form, are requisite to uranium milling and are made manadatory under regulatory agencies of government. 2. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY OF URANIUM Early Uses and Byproduct Production of Uranium Uranium was discovered by Klaproth in 1789 but had little commercial importance until the discovery of uranium fission by Hahn and Strassman at the close of 1938. The well-known uranium ores of Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, the Congo, and the Colorado Plateau were early sources of radium. Minor quantities of uranium were used for small-scale technical and industrial applications, particularly in coloring glass and ceramics, but most of the uranium was discarded. The Colorado ores were also mined later, chiefly for vanadium. Impetus of Armament Capability and Fuel Demands for Atomic Power Following the discovery of atomic fission, uranium became critically important for military applications and, more recently, as a nuclear fuel. Prior to 1966 uranium was acquired in the United States almost solely for use in the weapons program of the AEC. By 1970 the AEC had procured approximately 325,000 st of U3O8 from domestic and foreign sources. Current and future marketability is primarily dependent upon commercial demand for reactor fuel. The presence of iron in sphalerite induces the formation of zinc ferrite (ZF) during roasting. Zinc refinery residues (ZRR) and electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) contain a significant amount of zinc ferrite and are difficult to treat. According to the literature, up to 71% ZF has been found to be present in ZRR. The dissolution of zinc ferrite is inefficient even in aqua regia. The Waelz process is an existing process to recover zinc from electric arc furnace dust by reduction using carbon monoxide followed by the volatilization of zinc. In this study, zinc was selectively extracted from zinc ferrite by partial reduction of zinc ferrite at relatively low temperature followed by leaching in dilute sulfuric acid (20 g/L). Pure zinc ferrite samples were partially reduced to zinc oxide and magnetite by using H2 gas as a reductant. The presence of magnetite and zinc oxide was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. A maximum of 95%zinc extraction was achieved after leaching with sulfuric acid on the reacted samples. The paper also discusses the effect of time, temperature, and concentration of H2 in the reducing gas on the extraction of zinc and iron from ZF.

Open cast surface mining requires blast hole drilling with many interesting facets in order to achieve mine planning forecasts. Interestingly, no single method or combination of theoretical hypothesis of mining economics is right for all conditions. On occasion mine planners introduce a project with little or no regard to drilling and blasting. Generally, drilling and blasting costs are a significant percentage of total mine overhead. One such drilling and blasting method which can be utilized to reduce overall mine expenditure is inclined or angle hole drilling. One must bear in mind, that angle hole drilling per-se mill not reduce costs, unless a set of required circumstances is met. An attempt will be made to detail when conditions of the mine design criteria dictate the use of angle drilling.

This paper concerns the development and application of a high throughput multi-stream photometric sorting machine developed for the South African gold mines. It is now believed that this sorter and its progeny may be found suitable for a large proportion of all possible sorting applications. A laser light source and sensitive photomultiplier are employed in a scanning system to detect light reflected from the surfaces of rocks passing through the sorting zone. Electronic circuitry then analyzes the photomultiplier signal, which represents the varying intensity of the reflected light, and produces control signals to actuate the appropriate valves of an array of air blast rejection devices to remove from the feed certain particles selected by the analyzing process. Typical throughput per machine ranges from 50 tons/hour for a-2 ½? + 1 ¼? feed to 200 tons/hour for -6" +2 ¾ " material.

Returning the original soil material to the surface of smoothed mine spoils is n practical means of restoring agricultural productivity. Research has established that high-sodium spoils in North Dakota (a) must be covered with about 70 cm of soil material to achieve maximum production; (b) topsoil must be segregated and spread separately from subsoil; (c) potential production depends on the quality of the soil material returned; and (d) erosion and upward salt movement must be controlled for sustained production. Erosion is best controlled by reducing final grades as much as possible during the smoothing process followed by prompt establishment of vegetation. Almost half the nation's cool reserves are in the Northern Great Plains underlying several million hectares of agricultural land. Social pressures to return mined land to agriculture or other productive uses have resulted in recent enactment of state and federal legislation, which is intended to restore productivity to disturbed areas. All such legislation relating to the Northern Great Plains has stipulated that useable soil material be saved and returned to mined land after spoils are smoothed. This requirement immediately raises questions as to how much soil material is needed, what criteria are important in defining useable soil material, how is the soil material to be handled in the earth-moving operations involved, and how can replaced soil material be maintained and revegetation. Scientists at the USDA Northern Great Plains Research Center at Mandan, North Dakota have conducted research on the reclamation of disturbed lands since 1970. Initially this research was designed to identify and characterize those physical and chemical properties of spoils that are most restrictive to plant growth (1). Basically, they found that any properties of spoils that reduced the efficiency of storage and utilization of the limited precipitation received adversely affected plant growth. Thus, in the Northern Plains, revegetation of mined land was found to depend upon the management of factors affecting the availability of water to plants - the same as on unmined land. After the major problems in revegetation were identified, technologies were developed to circumvent the effects of the growth-limiting factors (2). Basically two approaches were identified by which plant growth-restricting properties of spoils could be corrected: (a) various amendments (gypsum, sulfur, Fertilizers, mulches, calcium chloride, etc.) could be applied to spoils to improve their ability to conserve precipitation and provide water for plant growth; or (b) undesirable spoils could be covered with suitable soil materials to reduce or alleviate adverse effects. The latter approach appeared to be more feasible in most instances And is the approach specified in current legislation. The remainder of this paper discusses research on the use of roil materials returned to spoils and summarizes the information obtained.

Personnel at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are studying the technology and applications of salt-gradient solar ponds (see below) for both electrical and thermal energy generation. The brine extraction and processing site operated by the Kerr-McGee Corporation at Searles Lake, California, offers ideal conditions for economic construction of solar ponds. Furthermore, since rising conventional energy costs adversely affect the economic recovery of brine by the present process, this site was selected for a study on the feasibility of integrating the solution mining of trona (Na2CO3?NaHCO3?2H20) in the lower salt with solar ponds for heating. The major emphasis of this study was to determine whether inexpensive thermal energy available at the brine extraction site would be useful in extracting increased mineral value from the resource. The present operation, which involves the simple extraction of the complex brine and its processing at the adjacent plant, is sometimes referred to as solution mining. Since the concept discussed in this paper involves injecting a heated sodium sulfate brine to dissolve carbonate underground, the proposed scheme is referred to as "enhanced" solution mining. The subject is discussed in greater detail in a recent JPL report. (1)
