The mechanisms of chalcopyrite oxidation in alkaline solutions have been studied using cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy techniques. The cyclic voltammetry was used to elucidate oxidation/reduction reactions, whereas impedance spectroscopy was used for in-situ characterization of the interface. To analyze the impedance spectra, equivalent circuit models were constructed based on a layer- wise growth of reaction products. Parameters of the equivalent circuit were calculated by comparing the experimental spectrum with that expected on the basis of equivalent circuit. From the value of equivalent circuit parameters, properties of the surface layers were inferred. These properties change substantially with the change in oxygen and/or collector concentration in solution. From such changes the effect of oxygen and collector concentration on the contact angle and flotation behavior of chalcopyrite were interpreted.

Education and research have always followed production in the mineral industry. Almost all of the leading mineral education and research units in the world today are in developed countries which had strong mining industries created during the 19th and 20th centuries to meet the demands for minerals due to the Indus- trial Revolution. It is in those countries where the main advances in mining and metallurgical technologies have occurred. But it is in the developing countries, often with traditions which have not favoured engineering initiatives, that the mineral industry is growing. Legislative changes and high exploration expenditures in many of those countries are of such a nature that many mineral discoveries will be made and mines and plants built in them during the next decades. Developments must be accompanied by increased activities in education, research and technology transfer in mining and processing, particularly those which are computer based. Malaysia is a developing country with the objective of achieving developed status by 2020. It has a short history of tertiary education and industrial research and a growing mineral industry. It is now building the education and research programs which will give strong support to its mineral industry. The progress which is being made in the computer based components of these pro- grams, and the factors which influence them, are discussed.

A computer-oriented systems simulator (CMHS) has been developed for analysis of continuous materials handling systems. Special emphasis has been placed in the model on several features that are unique to these systems. These features include periodic pattern of material arrival from several sources, several types of material to he transferred, material dispatch processes, intermediate storage capacities, and multiple material destinations. Both the deterministic factors of the continuous material handling system, such as the physical decomposition of the system and the scheme and schedule of its operation, and the stochastic factors, such as variations of material arrival, material pattern on the conveyor, and availabilities of the system elements, are considered in the simulator. The application, of the model is demonstrated through a study of an underground conveyor belt network serving long- wall and continuous miner sections.

As coal mining evolves in this country, underground coal is being mined at greater depth and under more difficult conditions than in the past. At the same time, economic conditions make it necessary to mine more efficiently and economically. As a result, pressures on mining companies arise on two fronts and make the job of mining coal underground very difficult. Recent improvements that have been made in health, safety and productivity have come about primarily due to improvements in existing technology and better management of all the production resources. However, this trend can continue only so far and thus innovation will be needed to continue the improvement. This paper deals with a concept that, on the surface, appears to be more efficient in terms of the costs to provide ventilation. The resulting design is oriented toward increasing the ventilation efficiency through use of a unidirectional ventilation plan but it also promises to increase recovery and decrease the requirements for development entries. To analyze this ventilation concept, two mine layouts with a similar production schedule were planned in a hypothetical 1.83 m (6 ft) coal seam. The first alternative analyzed uses a traditional approach to ventilation with centrally located shafts and a bidirectional ventilation pattern. Using this system, it is necessary to use large-diameter shafts and a large number of main entries. Using the same assumptions on ventilation requirements, the second alternative utilizes unidirectional ventilation whenever possible, a smaller number of main entries and small-diameter blind-bored shafts in the bleeder areas. The comparative analysis is performed using PSU/TDMVS, a computer network analysis program that is capable of determining the ventilation power requirements at any time in the mine life and converting the costs to a present value. The economic analysis is then completed by including the shaft-sinking and entry-driving costs and the costs associated with the recovery of coal that are directly related to the change in the ventilation system. The results are summarized on a present-value basis.

The development of new coal markets is -t upon the ability to utilize coal in an environmentally acceptable and economically viable fashion. Foremost in the concerns about coal utilization is the impact its combustion has on air pollution. Concerns over environmental issues, such as acid rain, are currently one of the major impediments to the development of new coal markets. The Department of Energy and the Synthetic Fuels Corporation are addressing certain aspects of the development of new technologies for the utilization of coal. However, at the present time, there is a void in the new technology development process. That void is the step from proof- of-concept to commercial demonstration. Congress has established the Clean Coal Technology Fund at a level of $750 million to fill this void. The Department of Energy, in a solicitation of interest, received over 175 proposals for commercial demonstrations of clean coal technologies. A review of these solicitations indicates that $1.2 billion worth of research could be accomplished with a federal cost sharing of $425 million or 35 percent of the total. Industry has indicated, through this response, its willingness to invest its limited funds on projects it feels have the greatest potential for the clean use of coal. What must now occur is that Congress must appropriate the monies from the fund to initiate the commercialization of these clean coal techno1ogies.

This paper by Mr. McIvor is yet another contribution to the eternal controversy surrounding the benefits, or otherwise, of high circulating loads in closed circuit grinding. Throughout the paper it is difficult to establish whether the author is referring to effects relating to the mill, classifier, or to the overall circuit. Table 1 is put forward as indicating the advantage of operating at high circulating loads. From the two (it would be interesting to see more) product sizing points provided in each case, the conclusions to be drawn are that cases one and two have very similar size analyses. The third case, however, indicates a much flatter curve, that is to say, higher fines production and a very wide spread of size ranges. If the objective of this circuit is to provide a closely sized product with minimum overground slimes to the downstream process, then it would appear to be the less "efficient" by far. No data is given for product pulp densities either. The term "efficiency" should never be used without a careful and clear definition. In this case, "efficiency" is used to express an apparent percentage reduction in operating work index (Bond) from the measured "standard" at 250% circulating load operation. This paper presents-:a new multivariate mineral resource estimation model, referred to as the Related. Information (RI). Instead of relating a mineral resource descriptor directly to a set of geological variables, the RI model relates the mineral resource descriptor to a synthesized information measure RI, which is created from a set of geological variables. All of the variables are transformed into binary characteristics. This model comprises two stages of estimation: estimation of a synthesized information measure and estimation of mineral resources. The information carried by a variable is classified into three types: mineralized-barren information, mineral resource variation information, and variable-controlling information. The synthesized information measure is defined as the product of the three types of information and the responses of binary geologic characteristics. The RI model is demonstrated on the pegmatitic Nb+Ta deposits in China.

Five coals blended at a Midwestern United States power station were subjected to detailed analysis of their Hardgrove grindability. The coals, representing four distinct coal beds, are a low-sulfur, high-volatile A bituminous Upper Elkhorn No. 3 coal (Pike County, Kentucky); a medium-sulfur, high-volatile A bituminous Pittsburgh coal (southwestern Pennsylvania); a low-sulfur, subbituminous coal from the northern Powder River Basin (Montana); and two low-sulfur, subbituminous Wyodak coals from two different mines located in the eastern Powder River Basin (Campbell County, Wyoming). All samples that were processed in the Hardgrove grindability tests were also analyzed for their maceral and microlithotype content. The high-vitrinite Pittsburgh coal and the relatively petrographically complex Upper Elkhorn No. 3 coal exhibited different grindability behavior. The petrographic compositions of the Pittsburgh raw feed, the 16 x 30-mesh fraction (HG! test fraction) and the -30-mesh fraction (HGI test reject) are similar, suggesting that the HGI test fraction typifies the whole feed. The eastern Kentucky test sample is not as representative of the whole feed, with the HGI test fraction having lower vitrinite amounts than the rejected -30-mesh fraction. The Powder River Basin coals are high in vitrinite content and show behavior similar to the Pittsburgh coal.

The liberation of methane during underground coal mining causes serious safety concerns. During a mining cycle, with mechanized mining equipment, thousands of cubic feet of methane are released from coal seams, discharged to return air courses, and vented to the atmosphere through mine fans. This has been the traditional way of removing the explosive hazards of methane gas from the mine. Through horizontal and vertical degasification techniques, this hazard can often be handled in an equally safe and much more profitable manner. Basically, degasification allows for the controlled reduction of inseam methane content of coal prior to its mining. It is the responsibility of mine management to evaluate these degasification programs and ensure that the program itself does not introduce some new risk to the mining process. The removal of methane gas from underground coal mines using horizontal and vertical degasification is a relatively new concept. Products and systems used in degasification continue to evolve. Site conditions vary also, so no one system or equipment can be said to be the safe answer for degasification in all situations. A constant process of cooperation and evaluation by mining and degasification management should result in a safer and more profitable mine.

"The East Side Access (ESA) CM005 Contract - Manhattan South Structures - consists of the installation of the waterproofing and final concrete lining for railroad tunnels, 3-Level Wye track turnout structures, segments of the Main Cavern Station, and a series of Ventilation Structures excavated beneath the existing Metro North Railroad (MNR) Grand Central Terminal. Several key team decisions made collectively by the Construction Manager (CM), Designer, and the Contractor has allowed the scheduled construction duration of 29 months to be maintained. These strategies include the use of alternate design and construction methods, including the use of pneumatically applied concrete lining and precast lining. This paper discusses these strategies, and illustrates how successful teamwork and cooperation during the execution of a large-scale construction project can lead to lowering costs, improving quality, and maintaining the overall project schedule. INTRODUCTION The East Side Access Project The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already over congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodate the NJ Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the NYCT Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The ESA Project includes building new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. (See Figure 1).The Manhattan Alignment In the Manhattan segment of the ESA Project the excavation in hard rock of tunnels, cross passages, caverns and shafts has been completed by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header. The construction of the structural concrete final lining, interior structures and fit-out of the previously excavated caverns and tunnels are currently being performed under Contract CM005 Manhattan South Structures awarded to Michels Corporation and Contract CM006 Manhattan North Structures awarded to Frontier Kemper Constructors Inc. This paper focuses on the design and construction aspects of Contract CM005 which is the first ESA Contract in Manhattan to successfully construct concrete final linings in pre-existing excavated areas."

Because of increased pressure from Federal & State Regulatory Agencies, most acid flows will require some sort of treatment prior to being discharged to receiving streams. In many industries, the volumes of liquors are large and their acid content varied. Pressure to minimize costs of waste treatment equipment and land usage makes development of a treatment process incorporating these desires mandatory. "Standard" methods of acid neutralization with lime have been known for years, however, the volume and characteristics of the resultant precipitated solids can create a disposal problem. Also, when standard lime treatment is used, the settling characteristic of the precipitated solids is normally slow. In some instances, the necessity of added dissolved solids removal, (such as iron, needing aeration) add to the problem of concentrating neutralized solids. In a paper published in the September 1970 issue of "Coal Age," *the results of extensive test work by personnel of the Homer Research Laboratories of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Bethlehem Pa., were reported. This paper dealt specifically with development of a flow sheet to treat acid mine drainage (hereafter referred to as AMD) from coal mine operations. Noise control is an important consideration in the design and operation of coal preparation plants. It is essential to understand and control noise sources to provide a safe environment for operating personnel. The average noise exposure levels in a typical coal preparation plant generally range between 95 and 100 db. An operator should not be exposed to noise levels of this magnitude for more than 4 and 2 hr, respectively, according to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations. The major noise sources in a coal preparation plant include noise from impacting the inside surfaces of steel chutes, vibrating screens, coal crushers, pumps, motors, fans, and blowers. The magnitude of noise varies considerably from one situation to another. NOISE EXPOSURE IN COAL PREPARATION PLANTS Noise regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health administration (OSHA) are accepted by MSHA relative to caal preparation plants. Fig. 14-43 shows a graph of the time of noise exposure in hours per day to which a worker can be exposed for each A-weighted sound level. According to this graph, a worker is permitted to spend 8 hr in a 90-db noise environment, but that time must be halved when the A-weighted sound level increases 5 db. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the length of time he is permitted to spend in that environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: where C is the actual duration of exposure at a given steady state noise level and T is the noise exposure limit for the level present during the time C According to MSHA regulations, the dosage, D, should not exceed one (1) for any worker for a full day of work. As an example of typical plant noise levels, vibratory screens and crushers emanate noise levels in excess of 90 db at a distance of 3 ft (0.9 m) with no material flow. Environmental experts face large and rapidly-increasing volumes of raw data obtained from environmental monitoring stations. These professionals must compile and analyze the data in a systematic manner to cost-effectively understand and minimize the impacts of mining. The shift toward desktop computing, combined with the downsizing of company staffs, has now more than ever created a demand for a modern, PC-based application for the storage, retrieval, analysis and presentation of environmental data. This paper discusses the general requirements of such a system, and points out specific ways in which such industry-specific software can provide convenient and useful access to the data. The software used to illustrate these features is the HydroDat program, developed by Western Water Consultants, Inc.

This paper deals with the effects of various bit geometric parameters on the failure characteristics of rock material. Improving the rock-cutting efficiency of continuous mining machines has proven to be an interesting research topic during the last few decades. In the current study, an automated rotary rock-cutting simulator, duplicating a continuous miner, was used to study these parameters in the laboratory. The improvement of bit performance in terms of its life, cutting efficiency, dust production and energy consumption has drawn widespread attention. Research has demonstrated that optimizing bit parameters can result in efficient fragmentation of rock. Indiana limestone rock material was used in this study. The bit tip angle, bit tip size, bit spacing, depth of cut and cutting velocity of the rotary drum were varied to investigate the failure characteristics. The cutting pressure, penetrating pressure and the depth of cut were monitored on the simulator during the cutting process. Airborne dust and settled dust were measured for each experiment. Then, the specific airborne dust and specific energy were determined for each type of bit. Triaxial tests were carried out to correlate the failure angle of the rock in the static case to the dynamic cutting process failure. The physical and mechanical properties of the rock were also determined to assess their influence on the wear characteristics of each bit.

The use of full face boring machines in underground mining has increased considerably in recent years and over 200 raise-boring machines are now in use in the Western World. Several tunnel-boring machines have been tested notably in America, West Germany, Britain and South Africa. A relatively new concept is the blindhole borer, where the machine stands on the lower level and bores a full diameter raise upwards without the use of a pilot hole. Four of these machines have been tested to date in South African quartzites with varying degrees of success. The development of boring technology has created new problems for ventilation engineers and exacerbated several existing ones. This challenge has been met in many varying ways and this paper attempts to provide a review of the current state of the art. Technology and methods are developing at great speed in this field and therefore no final and absolute solutions can be proposed, since each machine and site pose individual problems which are best handled by local knowledge and experience.

Open pit mines require substantial capital investment at the beginning of the operation and replacement investment at later years. The objective of obtaining the highest possible return on investment in a mining project can only be achieved with an efficient long term production plan. This plan consists of optimally determining four principal elements: 1) the amount of ore and waste to be mined each year, 2) the specific blocks to be mined each year, 3) the optimum mine life, and 4) the ultimate pit limits, which delineate the total reserve to be mined. The existing methodologies only provide solutions to one or two elements, by assuming the others known. Furthermore, the cost of mining each block in the deposit is assumed to be known and independent of the production schedule. The four elements of production planning are interrelated and the cost of mining any block is a function of the production schedule. The ultimate goal of this study, ,whose first steps are' discussed in this paper, is to develop a solution methodology that can simultaneously optimize all four elements of the production planning problem in open pit mines without making a priori assumption on any of the four elements.

Calculation of the sensible heat transfer between the rock surface and the flowing air in an underground airway is still fraught with problems. There are only a few results available in the literature for the calculation of the convection in tunnels with naturally rough surfaces. Some of them are purely empirical, while others use a theoretical approach, based on the analogy between heat and momentum transfer, expressing the heat transfer coefficient as a function of the friction factor. A review and evaluation of these results are presented. The heat transfer equations obtained using the different assumptions, vary over a wide range, so that experimental results are needed to determine the formulae and constants applicable to mine airways. In situ measurements of the "physical" and "technical" heat transfer coefficient carried out in deep mines are described. The statistical distribution of the convective heat transfer coefficient on rough surfaces, as well as the regression between the Nusselt and Reynolds numbers in the turbulent flow region, are presented. Radiative heat transfer between the surface and the moist air flowing in a duct of relatively large hydraulic diameter has been taken into account during evaluation. The results will be a definite refinement of those calculations presently used in mine climate simulation models.

Perceived environmental impacts from flotation reagents used in the phosphate industry have been of concern for nearly a decade. A research program was initiated to determine the distribution, fate, and consequences of flotation reagents (fatty acids, fuel oils, and amines) within the environment. Therefore, laboratory investigations of biodegradation and soil attenuation of the reagents were conducted along with field flotation mass balances and groundwater investigations in clay settling, sand tailings, and undisturbed areas. Sample analysis and a reagent mass-balance model indicated that most reagents are distributed in clay settling and sand tailings areas. Groundwater analyses showed no fatty acids or amines in any of 19 surficial or intermediate aquifer water samples. In contrast, fuel oils were detected in the surficial aquifer at all sand tailings areas in concentrations ranging between 8.5 and 0.5 mg/L. Fuel oil was also detected in trace amounts (0.6 mg/L) in one intermediate aquifer well located in an active sand tailings area. All fuel oil concentrations detected were very low and, coupled with a biodegradation rate of approximately 10% per month, all concentrations should be within reference levels in six months. Based upon the results of this study, use of flotation reagents in the beneficiation process of the Florida phosphate industry present no long-term threat to the environment.

With the trend in the coal mining industry pushing towards improved productivity and greater production, the number and size of longwall panels is increasing rapidly. The development and mining of large longwall panels causes unique problems in the provision of adequate ventilation at the working faces. Because of the transient nature of the longwall panel, and the difficult field conditions for ventilation measurements, detailed pressure and volume surveys are often not conducted around the longwall circuit. This is unforlunate because the highest resistance airway in longwall mines is typically the longwall tailgate, which frequently represents the only unregulated split in the ventilation network. This paper examines data collected from ventilation studies of longwall panels at nine mines. The variation in airway resistance, ventilating pressure and airflow is examined and compared with specific factors such as airway dimensions, ground conditions and support type used.
