Detailed monitoring of the response of the rock mass between rockbolt reinforcement units subjected to a simulated seismic source has been successfully conducted. This work has shown the increase in amplification of the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) with distance from a rock bolt unit, and, a minimum PPV for rockburst damage for the given site characteristics. This understanding, at this site, will allow the design of a suitable rock bolt spacing to prevent unravelling of the rock mass between the rock bolt units for a given level of seismicity. Or, alternatively, an estimation of the requirement for a suitable fabric support system, for the anticipated level of seismicity, can be made.

"From 2010, the dolomite concentration in the ore fed to the Usoke Plant increased, resulting in a significant increase in the gangue acid consumption and Mg build-up in the circuit, and thus an increase in the Mg:Co ratio in the plant solutions. This affected the Co salt grade, reagent consumption, filtration and drying capacity. Efforts were put in place to minimise the acid consumption and consequently the Mg dissolution (such as use of pre-diluted acid), but the benefits were negligible. Various efforts were then initiated by CHEMAF to improve the cobalt plant productivity (quantity and quality) by process changes, dual precipitation and seed recycle. The positive results obtained in the laboratory were successfully implemented on plant scale. A change in the process from a single-stage precipitation with Na2CO3 to dual precipitation using a combination of Na2CO3 and NaOH improved the capacity of the Co salt filtration by 30%, the Co salt grade and drying capacity by 50%, and reduced the reagent consumption by 22%. Implementation of precipitate seed recycle increased Mg rejection by 40%, improving the Co salt grade from 20% to 25%, and yielding a further drop in reagent consumption. INTRODUCTION CHEMAF (Chemicals of Africa), a mining company located in Katanga province of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been operating since 2003. The Usoke hydrometallurgical plant treats the Cu-Co ore from the Etoile pit to produce Cu cathodes via a leach–solvent-extraction (SX)–electrowinning (EW) circuit and Co salt via a selective precipitation process. The plant was designed to treat run-of-mine (ROM) ore grading 6% Cu and 1.5% Co; but, in 2008, due to a decline in grades, a heavy-media separation (HMS) plant was commissioned to enrich the low-grade ROM (3.5% Cu and 0.5% Co) up to 8% Cu and 1% Co before feeding it to the hydrometallurgical plant. Co is recovered by precipitation of Fe and Al with limestone, followed by Co precipitation as Co carbonate using sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), also known as soda ash. 85% of the final effluent from cobalt precipitation is recycled back to the plant as process water; the balance, 15%, is bled out and compensated for by fresh water top up to control and retard the rate of sodium sulfate build up."

Penetration and dissolution mechanisms are reviewed for predominantly single-phase oxide, two phase oxide and oxide-carbon composite refractories by liquid silicate slags. Theoretical models of these processes, as well as static (sessile drop, dipping and crucible) and dynamic (rotating finger and rotary slag) experimental tests, along with their practical limitations are considered. Direct (congruent or homogeneous) attack is controlled by the reaction rate at the slag-refractory interface or the rate of diffusive transport of species to it through the slag leading to active corrosion. Indirect (incongruent or heterogeneous) attack is controlled by diffusive transport through the slag or through a new solid phase, which forms at the original slag-refractory interface. This may lead to passive corrosion. Examples of direct and indirect attack in a range of refractory/slag systems are described highlighting the critical influence of the composition and hence viscosity of the local liquid slag adjacent the solid refractory. Penetration and corrosion can be controlled either through the local slag composition via the refractory or the bulk slag or by microstructural control of the refractory by e.g. internal generation of dense layers or external deposition/generation of passive coatings, so-called in situ refractories.

This paper outlines the recent process improvements and plant expansions that have resulted in a capacity increase from 40 000 to 60 000 tons per annum of metal production.

The South African Minerals Development Act (?the Act?) has been promulgated and will come into full force and effect once it is gazetted. Thereafter, all Old Order mineral rights will have to be converted into New Order mineral rights within a 5-year period, probably by the end of 2008. The conversion of rights will be achieved only with the demonstrated inclusion of empowerment groups in the conversion applications. In addition to the Act, the first draft of the proposed Royalty Bill (?the Bill?) was released during the week beginning 17 March 2003. Comments on the Bill?s contents had to be submitted before 30 April 2003. The contents were to be considered in terms of applicability and acceptability to the South African minerals industry, where after proposed comments and suggested amendments were to be submitted to the relevant State Treasury office. Specifically referring to the Bill, the general response from the industry is one of concern. Since any royalty is tantamount to a tax, the general feeling is that the current mining taxation rates are already internationally competitive and to increase these effective rates, notably at differing rates depending on commodity type, will have an adverse impact on the South African mining industry. A number of these impacts can be mitigated to some degree, depending on the flexibility of the State to address the major concerns.

his paper reports an investigation aimed at optimizing the compaction of granulated hard-metal powder for the production of cutting tool inserts. The optimal compaction is that which yields optimal shrinkage during sintering, i.e. minimum porosity in the sintered part. Extensive compaction tests on 23 different hard-metal powders have been carried out and have shown that the ideal ?green density? of a hard-metal compact, i.e. the density after compaction, increases linearly with the apparent density of the powder. On the basis of this result, an equation has been derived, which allows one to predict the optimal shrinkage that a hard-metal compact undergoes during sintering once the following data are known: the required sintered density, the volatile content of the powder and the apparent density of the powder. Since these data are available to the tooling designer, this equation allows one to design tooling for the compaction of hard-metal, which leads to optimal shrinkage

Small replacements of C12-trithiocarbonate (C12-TTC) for dithiocarbonate (DTC)/dithiophosphate (DTP) in a reagent suite for the flotation of platinum group metals (PGM) have significantly improved the rejection of gangue. Coupled to this is an improvement in kinetics, grade and recovery of PGMs. In a pilot-plant trial, after a 5 mole per cent replacement of the current DTC/DTP collector combination by C12-TTC, large opaque bubbles were replaced by small clear ones. In addition, a similar flotation response was realized with one-third of the current depressant dosage. During a preliminary plant trial on underground UG2 ore, the initial rougher concentrates were characterized by higher PGM concentrate grades and this was in part due to improved chromiter ejection. The concentrate produced from the TTC trial also exhibited a much finer particle size distribution. The overall circuit performance, which included secondary regrind and flotation, showed an increase in concentrate grade of approximately 44% while the tailings grade remained unchanged

Chemical states of fluorine in CaO-SiO2-CaF2glasses in a composition range of CaO/SiO2=0.5?1.3 and 5?25 mol%CaF2have been investigated by 19F solid-state NMR with and without MAS. The isotropic chemical shifts of the glasses are close to those of cuspidine crystal (59.4 and64.3 ppm with respect to C6F6) and CaF2crystal (58.6 ppm). The fluoride ions are coordinated with four or less than four calcium ions in this composition range. The chemical shifts move to the lower frequency with an increase in the CaF2content, whereas those are not affected by theCaO/SiO2ratio. The ionic distance between calcium and fluoride ions increases with an increase in the CaF2content. The chemical state of fluorine is not disturbed by the degree of polymerization of the silicate network. Comparing the MAS and static NMR spectra, the second moment attributed to 19F-19F dipole-dipole interaction has been estimated. The values of the glasses range over 3.1?7.3107Hz2andthose are larger than the calculated value of cuspidine crystal. This indicates that fluoride ions form Ca-F clusters in the glasses and that the size of clusters increases with increasing the CaF2content. The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ) utilizes the application of centrifugal force (and the resultant enhanced gravitational field) to conventional jigging technology principles to successfully process materials where the valuable constituent particulates are very fine and/or where there is a small specific gravity differential between these and the gangue minerals. The KCJ has been successfully employed in mineral sands applications in Australia for approximately 12 years. More recently, the KCJ has been tested and installed on zircon tailings dump retreatment projects in Australia and the USA, while being considered for similar projects in RSA, and is about to be installed in zircon tailings processing duties in India and Africa and in a tin removal duty in a rutile circuit in Australia. Extensive test work has been carried out on these applications and some typical performance data is presented in this paper. Information is also provided on the principles of operation of the KCJ and on the keys to a successful KCJ installation.

"Mine planning software continues to be an important factor when it comes to the development of the South African mining industry. To contribute to this development, a new methodology to define and measure mine planning software utilization in the South African coal mining sector within an evolving data-set framework was developed. An initial data-set showing the mine planning software providers, their corresponding software solutions, as well as the software capabilities and information on the number of licences was collected and compiled in 2012 in an online database for software utilized in the South African mining industry. Details of the database development and implementation were published in the Journal of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 2013. In 2014 the data-set was updated with additional and new information.In this paper, using the 2012 and 2014 time-stamps, a methodology for estimating the software utilization is developed. In this methodology, three variables: commodity, functionality, and time factor are used to define and measure the software utilization in order to ultimately inform decision making strategies for software utilization. Utilization in the coal sector was measured according to six different functionalities, namely Geological Data Management, Geological Modelling and Resource Estimation, Design and Layout, Scheduling, Financial Valuation and Optimization. The methodology is useful for stakeholders reviewing existing software combinations or intending to purchase new software in the near future and wanting to estimate the comparative attractiveness of a certain software package. These stakeholders include mining companies, consulting companies, educational institutions, and software providers. The work presented in this paper is part of a PhD research study in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand."

?Longhole blast hole drilling? techniques are not new to the mining industry. Appropriate mechanization and improvement of the techniques and application has evolved from the industry requirements. Today safety and economics play a larger role in the excavation of ore passes, ventilation passes, and relatively small inclined excavations in the conventional gold and platinum industry. The application of dropraise drilling from the top or from the bottom is discussed investigating the current techniques available, DTH application, advantages and disadvantages, limiting factors, typical layouts and proposals, the drop raising technique and future applications. Similarly, the application of longhole blast hole drilling in tabular and massive orebodies is discussed with emphasis on the DTH application, advantages and disadvantages, limiting factors, typical layouts, the long hole stoping techniques and future applications.

One of the consequences of globalizing mine finance is a necessity to apply uniform accountancy and valuation standards that are clearly understood and consistently applied by the global investment community. However, each country has unique circumstances, which sometimes make it difficult to align domestic practice with international requirements. South Africa is no exception and issues such as its political history, a taxation regime enforcing different rules on different mineral producers and a unique mineral rights ownership distribution, are barriers to internationalization. The economy is in a transitional phase as a result of the many and diverse policy documents following the change in political dispensation in 1994. Many of these documents have recently been implemented through new legislation and, in the case of mining, negotiations are continuing in order to ensure an acceptable outcome. This paper discusses the challenges that the South African minerals industry faces in the field of mineral property valuation. It draws on international experience and includes a discussion on the unique considerations that the South African mineral property market must take into account in establishing a code for this purpose, as such a code could later be aligned with international practice.

Abstract: A series of numerical tests of hydraulic fracturing in heterogeneous rocks were performed to investigate the influence of pore pressure magnitude and gradient on initiation and propagation of tensile fractures. The numerical tests were run with a Rock Failure Process Analysis code, F-RFPA2D, incorporated with a Flow-Stress-Damage coupling model (FSD). To investigate the influence of pore pressure magnitude on fracture behaviour, “pinch-off” breaking tests, originally employed by Bridgeman to investigate the effective stress law for tensile fracture in a uniform pore pressure field, were numerically modelled. In another numerical test, a double-notched sample, with fluid pressure in one notch while keeping the other one open to the atmosphere, is numerically extended to investigate how the fluid flow direction or the pore pressure gradient will influence the fracture behaviour. The simulation results show that fracture is strongly influenced by both pore pressure magnitude and pore pressure gradient. Um den Einfluess der Wasserdruckgroesse der Oeffnung auf den Bruch zu beurteilen, wurden auch Bruchpruefung und nummerische Analogexperimenten gemacht, und dadurch wurde die ganze Phase der Bruchentstanden und Verbreiten wiedergezeigt, und die Ergebnissen ergeben sich, dass die Wasserdruckgroesse der Oeffnung und der Porisitaet sehr viel auf den Bruchentstanden und Verbreiten der Tension von Gebirgen beeinfluessen. Mintek and BacTech have joined forces to provide the metallurgical industry with bacterial-oxidation processes for the treatment of sulphide ores. The processes are aimed at both refractory gold-bearing and base-metal concentrates. Previously, BacTech had commercially implemented the refractory gold process at the Youanmi Gold Mine in Western Australia. More recently, the process has been incorporated in the Sulphide Treatment Plant at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in Tasmania, Australia. In addition, Mintek and BacTech have recently signed an agreement with the Laizhou Gold Metallurgy Plant in China?s Shandong Province, which will see the third commercial realization of the technology for refractory gold. Development of the base-metal technology is the subject of several papers in the proceedings of this colloquium. The implementation of the refractory gold technology at Beaconsfield is discussed in detail. Some important aspects that are covered include: ?Test work, and the choice of bacterial culture ?Process design choices, and the advantages of the Mintek-BacTech process ?Inoculum build-up ?Plant commissioning ?Plant performance. Besides the Laizhou project, Mintek and BacTech are currently investigating several other commercial prospects for the technology. These include the use of the technology for a gold-copper deposit, where the production of both gold and copper is envisaged.

Titanium nitride in upgraded nitrided ilmenite (bulk of iron removed) can selectively be chlorinated to produce titanium tetrachloride. Except for iron, most other components present during this low temperature (ca. 200°C) chlorination reaction will not react with chlorine. It is therefore necessary to remove as much iron as possible from the nitrided ilmenite. Hydrochloric acid leaching is a possible process route to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite without excessive dissolution of species like titanium nitride and calcium oxide. Calcium oxide dissolution results in unrecoverable acid consumption. The leachability of nitrided ilmenite in hydrochloric acid was evaluated by determining the dissolution of species like aluminium, calcium, titanium and magnesium in a batch leach reactor for 60 minutes at 90°C under reflux conditions. The hydrochloric acid concentration (11%, 18% and 25%), initial acid-to-iron mole ratio (2:1, 2.5:1 and 3.3:1), and solid-to-liquid mass ratio (1:8.33 to 1:2.13) were varied. The results indicate that a hydrochloric acid concentration of 25 wt% supplied in a 2:1 acid-to-iron mole ratio would produce the most favourable upgraded nitrided ilmenite product. The dissolution of iron in this solution reached 97 per cent after only 60 minutes. The total dissolution of calcium and titanium species was 0.01 and 0.11 wt% respectively. Hydrochloric acid can therefore be used as lixiviant to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite. A Seismic Hazard Scale (SHS) has been developed to provide a practical seismic hazard assessment tool applicable to mine site personnel. It has been applied to seismic data sets from numerous Western Australian mines. The SHS is applicable when quantifying seismic hazard on a mine wide scale, on a mining block scale, and on a local cluster-by-cluster scale. Spatial mapping of variations in seismic hazard is a particularly powerful application of the scale. The SHS is sensitive to temporal increases in seismic hazard. It has also been shown that the SHS can be applied to estimate seismic hazard when seismic monitoring data are not available. The SHS is a simple derivation of the Gutenberg-Richter relation. There are assumptions and limitations to the SHS that need to be considered when applying it to mine seismicity data.

Fluctuating SO2 gas streams represent a difficult task for designers of SO2 removal systems (with respect to designing the plant), but in spite of the designers great efforts to solve the problems, the operation of such plants requires much care and attention. A fluctuating gas flow usually results from metallurgical smelting processes. Both gas composition and gas flow rate may vary. The first part of this paper outlines some existing technical solutions and presents the Pros and Cons of the different solutions. These solutions outline are: - Sulphuric acid plants operated with a preheater permanent in operation - Sulphuric acid plants with concentration increase of SO2 gas either using regenerative SO2 removal or cryogenic partial condensation of the SO2 - Sulphuric acid plants with additional burning of sulfur to increase SO2 content - Single-stage sulphuric acid plants followed by a tail gas system (which is) designed for periods of low SO2 input In the second part, this paper describes some existing technical solutions for removal of SO2 at low concentrations (i. e. less than 0.1 - 2 %-by volume), which could be used as tail gas treatment system for acid plants. While selecting an appropriate solution, special attention should be given to operating costs, which usually to a large extend depends on the type of absorption agent and the costs for disposal of the sulfur compound produced.

This paper reports on recent field observations on the performance of support systems under different corrosion environments in Canadian underground mines. Phenomenological data are used to gain a better understanding of the main causes of corrosion in underground metal mines. Preliminary field data collected from five metal mines have been complemented by atmospheric and water sample analysis as well as fractography and metallographic studies. This has identified dominant factors that control the corrosion of support systems. The data are analysed in order to develop a support strategy for mines operating in corrosion environments.

As part of a comprehensive risk analysis which was carried out into the effectiveness of the water barrier between South Deep and Randfontein Estate mines, the potential threat posed by large seismic events was assessed. The study covered several aspects. Firstly, an estimate of the maximum credible earthquake was obtained from a probabilistic analysis of the regional seismicity of the previous 25 years. Allowance was made for ?reservoir-induced? effects by increasing the estimate of the size of the maximum credible earthquake from ML= 5.1 to ML= 5.5. Based on available knowledge of the geological structure, the possibility of such an event occurring in the vicinity of the barrier pillar was estimated. The possibility of substantial damage to the barrier rock mass, resulting as a consequence of a large event, was assessed. The likely damage to the concrete control plugs installed in five tunnels that penetrated the barrier, which might result from a ?near-miss? by the largest possible seismic event or from a ?direct hit? by a smaller event, was also considered. It was concluded that there was a negligibly small possibility that the maximum credible earthquake could occur close enough to the barrier, and in such a manner, as to cause any damage to it or to the plugs in the tunnels passing through it. The possibility of serious plug damage occurring as a result of a ?direct hit? by as maller event was slightly greater, but still sufficiently remote as to be of no practical concern at all.
