Table 28 and figure 10 show the number of fires and fire injuries for surface sand and gravel mines by state during 1990-2001. Table 28 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. At surface sand and gravel mines, a total of 70 fires with 60 injuries occurred in 29 states during 1990-2001. Fifty-nine of the fires caused 60 injuries (none of the fires involved contractors). The yearly average was 5.8 fires and five injuries. The Ewhr value was 741 x 106 hr (Irr = 0.016), and the LWD value was 6,921. California had the most fires (nine fires and five injuries), followed by Michigan (six fires and six injuries) and Pennsylvania (five fires and five injuries). Of these states, Pennsylvania had the highest injury risk rate value (Irr = 0.052). Table 29, partly illustrated in figure 11, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires and fire injuries show an increase during the second period followed by a decrease during the fourth period followed by a small increase during the fifth period and a sharp decrease during the last period. Employees' working hours increased during most of the periods. The Irr values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values.

During 1990-2001, a total of 518 fires occurred in all metal/ nonmetal mining categories; 296 of those fires caused 308 injuries and 4 fatalities. Surface operations had the most fires and the highest injury risk rate values. Forty-five fires destroyed or heavily damaged facilities and equipment (including 19 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. In the future, many of these fires and injuries might be prevented or detected and extinguished at their earliest stage by improving current fire safety procedures, adopting existing/ improved fire detection and suppression technologies, and/or developing new technologies. Several strategies for reducing and/or preventing the number of fires and fire injuries follow. I. Increase vigilance, improve safety procedures, and develop new technologies in order to prevent fires and injuries caused by fame cutting and welding operations. 2. Improve equipment hydraulic/fuel/electrical systems inspection programs; adopt fire-resistant hydraulic fluids and electrically powered motors for use in underground mines; develop new technologies (equipment/cab rapid fire detection/ prevention/suppression systems, emergency line drainage systems, and fire barriers); adopt an optimal ground level location for the activation of emergency systems; improve operator's fire preparedness training programs; and develop effective and rapid local firefighting response capabilities. 3. Adopt existing/improved systems for continuous and early detection of combustion gases and smoke along beltlines. 4. Adopt existing/improved technologies for monitoring equipment (beltlines) operational functions. 5. Increase vigilance and adopt improved safety procedures for handling f amenable liquids and refueling fuel in the vicinity of heat sources.

For all coal mining categories, data on coal mine fires during 1990-1999 have been reported as actual numbers and calculated values. 1. For each mining category, actual numbers include the total number of fires, fire injuries, employees' working hours, lost workdays, and coal production (for underground and surface mines only) for a 1 0-year period (1 990- 1999) and for five successive 2-year periods with the 10-year period. These numbers have also been reported by state ( 10-year period). The actual number of fire fatalities has been reported by time period. Furthermore, actual numbers of fires for the five 2-year periods have been reported by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material. Actual numbers of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires have been reported by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location. 2. For each mining category, the calculated values include the fire and injury risk rates during the 10-year period and the five 2-year periods. The fire risk rate (Frr) values were calculated according to the USBM formula [Pornroy and Carigiet 19951. The injury risk rate (Irr) values were calculated according to the MSHA formula [MSHA 1991a, 1992, 1993, 1994a, 1995a, 1996, 1997, 1998b, 1999c, 20001. Also, risk rate values for individual states (10-year period) were calculated according to the above-mentioned formulas. Of note is that only the risk rate values for the 10-year and five 2-year periods and risk rate values for individual states with the highest number of fires and fue injuries were considered for comparison purposes. The fatality risk rate values were not calculated because of the extremely small number of fire fatalities during the 1 0-year period. 3. Calculations of risk rate values are as follows: a. Fire risk rate (Frr) value: Number of fires per million tons of coal produced [Pornroy and Carigiet 19951. b. Injury risk rate (Irr) value: Number of fire injuries multiplied by 200,000 working hours per total employees' working hours [MSHA 1991a, l992,1993,1994a, 1995a, 1996, 1997, 1998b, 1999c, 20001. The Irr value is the average risk rate value for the number of fire injuries per 200,000 working hours for a given time period.

Table 10 and figure 4 show the number of fires and fire injuries occurring at the surface of underground metal/nonmetal and stone mines by state during 1990-2001. Table 10 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. A total of 12 fires occurred in 11 states; 5 of the fires caused 5 injuries. The yearly average was one fire and 0.42 injury. Five fires with two injuries occurred at metal mines, five fires with two injuries occurred at nonmetal mines, and two fires with one injury occurred at stone mines. None of the fires involved contractors. The Ewhr value was 58 x 106 hr (Irr = 0.017), and the LWD value was 75. Nevada had the most fires (two fires and no injuries). Ohio, New Mexico, Missouri, South Dakota, and Idaho each had one fire with one injury. Of these states, Missouri had the highest injury risk rate value (In = 0.25). Table 11, partly illustrated in figure 5, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires decreased during most of the six time periods. The number of fire injuries and employees' working hours decreased during all of the periods. The Irr values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values. Tables 12-17 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 6 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 18 shows the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

Designing coal pillars to provide resistance against overburden and gob loads has long been an aim of rock mechanics engineers. This requirement has become more imperative as greater overburdens are encountered and when mining in stiff coal-bearing strata. Current design procedures rely on theories of coal pillar behavior that take into consideration a common hypothesis. This hypothesis states that the elastic core is surrounded by an inelastic yield zone. The distribution of stress at low-to-moderate pillar loads has been effectively defined by this hypothesis. However, it suffers greatly when applied to large width-to-height (w/h >lo) coal pillars under considerable overburden (>500 m) . In these situations, the hypothesis says the elastic core can achieve unrealistic stress states giving the pillars extremely high calculated strength. A growing body of field studies has shown this is not the case. It has become clear that same other mechanism must be involved. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the importance of an interface slip mechanism between the coal- bed and the surrounding strata in controlling the extent and pattern of stresses and deformations in a coal pillar.

The Bureau of Mines studied 780 acres of the 24,130-acre Sheldon Contiguous Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-1012) in 1985. The study was done at the request of the Bureau of Land Management and authorized under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (Public Law 94-579, October 21, 1 976) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area is located in Washoe County, NV, about 35 miles northeast of Cedarville, CA. A search of county courthouse records and an examination by foot traverses through and adjacent to the study area did not reveal evidence of any mining or mining exploration activity past or present. In addition, evidence of any form of rock alteration was not observed. Evidence of mineral resources is not apparent. Although basalt, the only rock-type present in the study area, can have some limited industrial applications, sources closer to potential markets probably would preclude rock from this area being economically competitive. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of the Sheldon Contiguous study area at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys ;s to provide data for President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

From 1987 through 1996, 13 fatalities occurred at underground operations in the U.S. stone mining industry. A review of the underground limestone mine industry data for this 10 year period indicated a high fatality concentration in one area: ground failures.

The Bureau of Mines determined the effect of slag additives on copper solubility and the distribution of typical impurity elements between copper-iron matte and silica-saturated fayalite (iron silicate) slag at 1,250° C, in CO-C02 atmospheres with 10 pct S02. Small additions (<10 pct) of CaO, A1203, and MgO were shown to decrease copper solubility in the slag. Additions of CaO increased the solubility of bismuth and tellurium in the slag at lower matte grades. Al 20 3 additions decreased the solubility of tellurium in the slag, but increased that of bismuth at lower matte grades. A1203 additions increased the solubility of both at lower matte grades. With no additives, matte grade did not affect the solubility of bismuth in slags, whereas increasing matte grade resulted in a slight decrease in the tellurium solubility in slag. Additions of CaO or As203 alone to the slag increased selenium and arsenic distribution to the matte, but had little or no effect on antimony distribution; whereas small MgO additions decreased antimony distribution to the matte but had no effect on arsenic and selenium distribution. In slags with no additives, selenium distribution to the matte increased with increasing matte grade, while that of antimony decreased and that of arsenic was unchanged.

Many significant events that began in 1990-91 continued to have a profound impact in the world minerals economy in 1992. The dissolution of the U.S.S.R. and the formal breakup of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA) had significant effects far beyond the geographic boundaries of Europe and Central Eurasia. CMEA&apos;s network of economic interdependence had relied on central planning, a variety of subsidies, and barter agreements that allowed its members to function without the pressures of productivity and efficiency. In the mineral sector, many decisions had been made based on the need for military planning and technology competition with the market economy world. Because of inexpensive oil available through subsidies and technology assistance from the former U.S.S.R., industries III CMEA member countries had been able to function and maintain production to supply minerals and materials required to support the policies of the central plan. In 1992, most of the former CMEA countries decreased their output of many minerals. In some cases, the network of production that had been in place was severed. Political and economic instability, destruction of infrastructure, and new priorities were affecting other mineral industries in the area. In late 1991, 15 independent countries replaced the U.S.S.R. and in early 1991 the former CMEA countries found themselves trying to adjust to the realities of economic independence and the need to compete with former allies for survival. Although 11 of the 15 former Soviet republics joined in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in December 1991, in 1992, individual economic needs exceeded the needs of the Commonwealth III importance. As a result, new mineral trade patterns emerged as minerals were used as a source of much needed capital.

"Co-Directors, Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable DustEarly in the 1980s, the U.S. Bureau of Mines initiated the concept of the Generic Center, incorporating it into its mining research program, and in 1983, the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust was established. The Generic Center concept was first envisioned by the U.S. Bureau of Mines as a way to bring together the various different scientific, engineering and medical research interests in the respirable dust area to effect a coordinated and efficient organization for advancing knowledge in that field. The result was a combination of the collective talents and skills of more than 100 scientists, engineers, medical personnel and graduate students, through the formation of a consortium of five major research universities, including medical facilities, to perform respirable dust research. The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust consortium comprises The Pennsylvania State University (with its Hershey Medical Center) and West Virginia University (with its Medical Center) as the lead universities and the University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Michigan Technological University as affiliates.Although respirable dust-related disease remains the nation's worst industrial hazard, the fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with the mining and milling industries, including the interaction of dust and lungs, has grown significantly over the past near-decade toward the larger effort to reduce the incidence and severity of disease caused by respirable dust. Continued progress toward making the mine work environment cleaner and healthier remains the immediate objective of the Respirable Dust Center.The Respirable Dust Center's research program and technology transfer activities, described in this paper, exemplify the Generic Center concept first envisioned by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Interdisciplinary and interactive studies continue to result in significant progress toward making mine atmospheres cleaner and healthier."

Brief history of photography Silver- based photographic materials are made for many applications that require different photochemical and physical response characteristics and a wide variety of formats and sizes. All of these products are laminates consisting of a surface-treated support and bonded gelatin layers. Two basic types predominate - films and papers. Films have transparent or translucent plastic supports (mostly cellulose tri-acetate and polyester), while papers have mostly a paper core coated with polyethylene resin layers on both sides (RC type). The front layer contains white titanium dioxide to provide high reflectivity and the back layer a matting agent. However, a few so-called fiber base papers are still supplied. These have a high quality paper base coated with a baryta layer ; i.e. a gelatin layer containing white barium sulfate. The manufacture of photographic film and paper supports requires special procedures and equipment, because of the severe requirements for chemical purity, optical integrity and uniformity (see Table 1 on page 10 for a list of the principal makers of film and paper supports).

Interviews of 48 miners who escaped underground coal mine fires revealed that none of them had ever, before that incident, worn their self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) either in training or in a real emergency. Consequently, they were ill-prepared to use this emergency breathing apparatus. One persistent problem stemmed from the fact that miners had no notion of breathing resistance, nor of the fact that it would get more difficult to breathe the longer they wore their device. As a result, many of those who were interviewed had simply removed their mouthpieces and breathed ambient air. This is obviously behavior that should be trained out of the workforce. Unfortunately, because of high costs and difficult logistics, miner training is unlikely to ever include donning and wearing an apparatus on a regular basis. In order to give workers a better idea of what to expect from their devices, therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a tabletop (paper and pencil) simulation based upon actual predicaments evacuees had reported encountering. The simulation is designed to emphasize important points related to donning and wearing a self-contained self-rescuer in a mine fire escape, and, by doing so, to bring miners&apos; expectations more in line with what their actual experiences would be. The simulation was field tested in six training classes at three different mining operations. In all, 99 individuals were involved in completing the exercise and rating its properties. In their ratings 88% of the respondents indicated they thought the scenario could definitely happen in real life, and over 80% agreed they had learned something new. From the field test data it was concluded that the simulation had authenticity and potential value as a teaching tool. The simulation was therefore used in a pre-test/post-test control group experiment to determine whether it led to improvements in miners&apos; scores on a true-false test of their SCSR&apos;s functional capabilities and proper usage. Eighty-three miners were included in this part of the study. As expected, miners who had participated in the training exercise scored significantly higher on their post-test than miners who had not.

Rank the dust knockdown (airborne capture) ability of six different types of water spray nozzles, Approach A fixed quantity of dust is released into a large, closed chamber in a laboratory. Water sprays are turned on inside the chamber and their effectiveness on the dust cloud is evaluated from the rate at which the dust disappears. This method better simulates dust suppression underground than methods tried earlier. The results of the laboratory test were confirmed by conducting tests on a full-scale mod-el continuous miner face where dust levels were measured in the return airway. Results of the Closed Chamber Tests The graph indicates that atomizing nozzles provide the best use of water for dust scrubbing. However, use of these nozzles is limited by their susceptibility to damage and clogging. Hollow-cone nozzles perform almost as well as atomizing nozzles. Test results also indicate that full-cone, venturi-assisted, and flat-fan spray cones are about two-thirds as effective as hollow-cone nozzles. The least effective were venturi nozzles designed for moving air. The most significant advantage of hollow-cone nozzles over other nozzles tested is reduced clogging due to larger orifice size. The hollow-cone nozzle used in the test and depicted by the graph was type BD-3 manufactured by Spraying Systems Co., Wheaton, IL. This nozzle is already used on many continuous miners. Under the terms of the Code of Commerce ( arts . 12ff . ) , foreigners living in El Salvador can engage in business on the same terms as nationals . This involves ( = $434.00 ) - except for those with a working capital , of less than a thousand pesos inscription in the merchants ' register , which can be refused only in case of manifest disability of a permanent nature .

1. BACKGROUND Many research projects on engineering controls for noise reduction in mining were conducted by the former U.S. Bureau of Mines, mostly under contracts from 1972 through 1986.1 Contracts were awarded to determine which mining equipment was responsible for worker noise exposure over the permitted Federal Regulation level of 90 dBA for 8 hours. Dominate noise sources, for each piece of equipment was also determined. The final goal was to develop engineering noise controls for those pieces of equipment and then evaluate them. This was the general approach taken in each research project or contract. This paper deals with what is known about the control of noise from continuous miners, one of the most commonly used underground mining machines. A literature review on continuous miners revealed that the relevant noise sources were divided into four categories: conveyor, cutting head, drive train, and motor noise. The dominate noise sources reported were the conveyor noise and the cutting noise.2 Conveyor noise consists of impacts and scraping at various locations on the conveyor structure. These impacts are associated with discontinuities on the top and bottom decks, impacts between the chain and the tail roller, impacts on the sidewalls at path points of discontinuity under horizontal pivot, and impacts on the flex plate.3 Scraping occurs along the entire length of the chain conveyor. The other dominate source, the cutting of coal, has also been addressed in past research.4, 5, 6 The research presented in this paper only addresses the controls associated with the conveyor. The literature suggests several effective treatments for noise control: retrofitting the chain conveyor with a urethane coating or a urethane sleeve on the chain flights, using a urethane coating or urethane sleeve on the tail roller, constrained layer damping of the decks, and the use of a modified take up plate.7, 8 However, the in-mine durability of these concepts has yet to be proven for the conveyor system. This paper analyzes extensive noise and urethane durability testing on a Joy 14CM9 continuous miner’s conveyor assembly, tail roller, and bottom plate conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Lab facilities. It will also discuss the initial underground testing results for the urethane-coated conveyor flights and tail roller.

"The manufacture of asbestos paper began commercially about 40 years age but its principal development has taken place during the past twenty-five years. The asbestos used by the ancients, termed amiantus by Pliny was used for winding sheets, tablecloths and other fabrics. It was probably chrysotile fiber and was a woven and not a felted product, and there¬fore is not to be confused with asbestos paper. There are, however, some early references to paper manufacture that are of interest. Pontoppidian, Bishop of Bergen, in his Natural History of Norway, published in 1750, refers to paper made from asbestos found in the parish of Waldens. He states that this paper did not burn when thrown in the fire, but the writing on it totally disappeared. This indicates that the primary ob¬ject was to obtain an indestructible writing paper. About 100 years later, further efforts were made with the same object in view. In 1853, a patent was issued for a process of making paper from a mixture of asbestos and alum. Many experiments were made to manufacture suitable asbestos printing paper. Some such papers contained only about one-third asbestos, the remainder being of combustible material. Such papers would burn, but would leave a white residue which retained its shape and preserved the written characters. On account of the difficulty of obtaining a smooth and even surface, and the tendency for the material to absorb ink like blotting paper, asbestos paper is not well adapted for writing or printing purposes. Other early uses of asbestos paper were for ornamental wall-paper and carpet linings. None of the uses mentioned above have developed to anything of importance in a practical way, but the manufacture of asbestos paper has become a very important industry, and it has found extensive uses in ways that were never dreamed of by the early investigators.It is recorded that the first sheet of asbestos paper made in America was manufactured in 1876 by John Roberts & Son Company, in a mill near Waltham, Mass. The material first used was a long-fibered amphibole asbestos from Italy. About three years later, Canadian fiber was introduced and proved to be very satisfactory. The shorter grades of fiber which would otherwise be wasted were used for the manufacture of paper and board. For several years, the product of this mill was sold through Rice Kendall of Boston, Mass. From 1881 to 1900, the H. W. Johns Company, of New York, took the entire product which was 30C to 700 tons per year. The latter company built their own asbestos paper mill at Brooklyn in 1900. Keasbey & Mattison Company, of Ambler, Pennsylvania, began to manufacture in 1897. Other early manufacturers were: the Asbestos Paper Company, at Baldwinsville, Mass„ and Mr. B. S. Binney, at Shirley, Mass. The number of manufacturers gradually increased until at present asbestos paper is manufactured by the following ten companies:"

"while investigating the presence of heavy strata gases* in certain mines of the East Tintic mining district of Utah, a small, local body of light, very hot gas of high-nitrogen composition was noted in one of the mines. Observations and analyses indicate that this light gas was resulting from very rapid oxidation of finely disseminated pyrite, in lead-silver sulphide ore. The gas was actually mine air which had lost a large proportion of its oxygen content by reaction with the pyrite. This body of gas was hanging in a local high spot about 5 by 5 by 5 feet in size, caused by caving, at the end of a crosscut. Fifty feet from this spot, an air current of 6000 cubic feet per minute was entering the 5 by 7 foot cross-cat from a raise from below.On account of the vapor contained in the gas, the bottom level of the gas could be plainly seen and was practically a horizontal plane, but of slightly wavy appearance, coinciding with the point where an acetylene light was extinguished. This body of gas was visited on three occasions and samples obtained by means of evacaated bulbs and by water displacement. The temperature of the gas was ap¬proximately 175 degrees P. on all three occasions, so that sampling required thick gloves and quick action. Air three feet below the vapor line had a temperature of only 120 degrees F., and a relative humidity of 27 per cent. The stratification of the air and gas mixtures was so sharply defined that the sampler could hold his head a few inches below the vapor level for an appreciable period of time without any noticeable effect other than that due to the high temperature. At one foot below vapor level, it was 135 degrees F., and the relative humidity was 30 per cent. When a candle and an acetylene light were raised into the gas from below, the candle flame was extinguished at a point two inches lower than the acetylene flume, indicating a drop in oxygen content from about 16 per cent to 12 per cent (oxygen content of normal dry air 20.05 per cent) in the distance of two inches."
