This paper , which describes the mining methods and practices at the Hayden Creek lead mine of St. Joseph Lead Co. in southeast Missouri , is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts of the United States . The Hayden Creek mine is in the W 1/2 sec . 7 , T. 36 N. , R. 4 E. , St. Francois County , Mo. , about 1 mile southwest of the town of Frankclay ( fig . 1) . The mine is on the west edge of the mining district known as the Lead Belt . However , neither the ore body nor the underground workings are connected with those of any other mine in the district . In contrast with most operations in the district , underground haulage is entirely trackless , and nearly complete delineation of the large , well -defined ore body by drilling permitted comprehensive planning of development and mining in advance of shaft sinking . The ore differs in character and occurrence from that of the main ore deposits in the Lead Belt in that the lead mineral , galena , occurs in the dolomitic matrix enclosing granite boulders instead of in dolomite limestone .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating surfactants added to water sprays to enhance the control of dust during coal mining operations. The objective of the present work was to establish the general applicability of adding sulfate ion to anionic surfactant solutions in order to improve wetting action. This was pursued through laboratory wettability testing of four anionic surfactants and one nonionic surfactant in combination with various concentrations of sulfate ion. The experimental results demonstrated that the addition of sulfate ion enhanced the wetting characteristics of all the anionic surfactants when applied to hard-to-wet coals, while easy-to-wet coal showed more complex wetting behavior. Sulfate ion in the presence of nonionic surfactant enhanced wetting only slightly or not at all. Surface tension measurements of the dilute aqueous surfactant-sulfate anion solutions indicated this property was not important in coal-wetting phenomena, as long as the value was below the critical value for coal. Sulfate ion helps surfactant reduce surface tension but primarily appears to affect wetting action by altering the adsorption characteristics of surfactant on the coal surface.

The property of the lava Cap Gold: Mining Corporation is in the Nevada City-Grass Valley mining district about 5 miles east of Crass Valley, Calif. At present (July 1940) the plant is mining end milling about 390 tons of gold-silver ore a day; about 310 men are employed. This paper describes the mining methods used and presents mining costs for 1939, when 60,704 tons were mined by cut-and-fill stoping and 55,676 tons by square-setting.

[During the past several years a great deal of discussion has centered around the question of the permissible limit of sulphur content in fuels for automotive and aviation motors. Under certain conditions of operation, sulphur in motor fuels causes the formation of corrosive substances which attach bearings, wrist pins, and other parts of engines. On the other hand, in making gas¬oline from certain stocks, the gasoline fraction normally contains a relatively large proportion of sulphur compounds. By the generally used processes of reducing the sulphur content, a significant part of the gasoline fraction is lost as motor fuel, and added expenses are entailed for chemicals, labor, and other process costs. This condition has been an economic burden to some refiners of high-sulphur crudes. In some instances the treating losses have been rather severe and the treating costs relatively high, but the data presented in this paper indicate that the reduction of sulphur content of motor fuel is a problem to a relatively small number of refiners and of little or no concern to the remainder; in fact, more then 90 per cent of the 153 samples analyzed passed the Federal specification requirement, which limits the sulphur content to 0.10 -nor cent. 3 This report is based upon the results of an examination for sulphur content, Doctor test, copper strip corrosion, and color of the samples collected during January, 1930, for the twenty-first semiannual gasoline survey of the Bureau of Mines. The results of the gravity and distillation tests of the survey were published as Report of Investigations 2995. The numbering of the samples given in this report is the same' as in Report of Investigations 2995; for example, No. 25 of this report is the same sample as No. 25 of Report of Investigations 2995.]

"The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. The Buckeye manganese deposits are in Stanislaus County, Calif., about 33 miles south of Tracy. From 1917 to 1919 the deposits produced 13,370 tons of ore reported to average 46 percent manganese and 14 percent silica. The deposits are confined to two areas of' development, known as the north mine workings and the south mine workings, about 700 feet apart horizontally. Mineralization occurs chiefly as rhodochrosite and psilomelane interbedded in cherts of the Franciscan formation. As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a development project was started November 25, 1940, and completed June 27, 1941. The Federal Geological Survey cooperated by mapping the topography and geology and logging the drill cores. The program included road and. trail building, trenching, underground excavation, diamond drilling, and sampling. The following pages mention the location, brief the history, and note the physical .features of' the district. Mine workings are sketched, the deposit is described, and the plan of the project is noted. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is explained in the concluding pages with a summary of the drill-hole logs.

This investigation was conducted to obtain data on optimum conditions for chloridizing metal sulfides . Salt- roasting galena at 450° C for 8 hours chloridized 75 percent of the lead ; in an equal time of treatment at 750° C , the process chloridized 42 percent of the zinc in sphalerite . Hydrogen chloride at 500° C completely chloridized galena in 15 minutes , and at 600° C converted all of the zinc in sphalerite to the chloride in 4 hours .

This paper describing the timekeeping and pay-roll methods of the Britannia raining and Smelting Co. (Ltd.) is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of nines regarding office procedures in connection with mining operations. The general office of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co. (Ltd.) is located at Britannia Beach, B. C., a town of about 600 inhabitants at tidewater on the east side of Howe Sound and about 30 miles from Vancouver, B. C. The Beach, as it is locally termed, is a company town consisting largely of about 250 employees of the company and their families. Here is the milling and concentrating plant of over 6,000 tons daily capacity- the main service units comprising the electrical, mechanical, blacksmith and woodworking shops and the local electric-furnace foundry; the central-heating steam plant; the air and electric generating units; the ball-manufacturing plant; the warehouses; and the general store, which serves this community and also acts as distributor for the general stores located elsewhere on the property.

Batch and continuous - circuit flotation , leaching , precipitation , and electrodeposition studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine optimum conditions for treatment of complex mercury - antimony sulfide and mercury- arsenic sulfide ores and concentrates . On the Red Devil ore sample over 95 percent of both the mercury and antimony sulfides were recovered in a flotation concentrate containing 35.6 percent mercury and 21.0 percent antimony . By selective flotation a mercury concentrate containing 71.0 percent mercury and 2.9 percent antimony was obtained with a mercury recovery of 90.4 percent . Leaching results show that , with 150 grams per liter of sodium sulfide and 50 grams per liter of sodium hydroxide , 95 to 99 percent of the mercury , antimony , and arsenic sulfides could be extracted from the concentrates treated . Sodium hydroxide reagent consumption was based on the sulfides generated in the dissolution of the sulfide minerals and on the method of metal recovery used . Selective leaching of the antimony and arsenic sulfides with potassium sulfide dissolved more than 95 percent of either of these two sulfides and 0.5 to 5 percent of the mercury sulfide present . Methods for recovering mercury and antimony from solution were electrodeposition of mercury followed by electrodeposition of antimony , aluminum precipitation of both mercury and antimony , or antimony precipitation of mercury followed by antimony electrodeposition . The Bureau of Mines studied the effect of alloy additions on abrasive wear of low-alloy steels. A dry-sand, rubber-wheel abrasion test appa-ratus using ASTM G65-Sl procedure B was used for the abrasive wear tests. Eighty-six material heat-treatment combinations were abrasion tested. Results of these tests were analyzed statistically using regression analysis to see if additions of Cr, Mn, Mo, Ni, Si, AI, Cu, and S were significant in affecting the abrasive wear rate of low-alloy steels. Regression analysis was also used to confirm hardness and C affect on the abrasive wear rate of these steels. It was found that for all the steels taken as a group, increased amounts of Mn significantly reduced the wear rate, while increased amounts of Mo and S1 increased the wear rate. Analysis also confirmed previous research done by others, that increasing hardness and amounts of C reduced the wear rate. For the hardened steels taken as a class, only increasing amounts of C and Mn reduced the wear rate, while increases in Si increased the wear rate. In the class of unhardened steels, increases in C, Mn, and S re-duced the wear rate, whereas increases in Mo increased the wear rate. The steels with the best resistance to wear were two hardened experimen-tal steels similar to AISI 1055 and AISI 107S.

During the 1982 Bureau of Mines study, 55 lode and 17 placer claims were held in the RARE II area. An estimated 150 lode claims and 50 placer claim, have been located in the study area; five were patented. There are no mineral leases. Gold has been produced from 8 lode mines and stream gravels have been worked for placer gold at 4 sites. Two suction dredges were active in stream gravels, but no significant gravel bars are identified. Identified mineral resources in the Weaver Bally area are gold and byproduct silver. The identified resources are at the Globe Mine, where approximately 33,000 tons of indicated marginal reserves (2,000 tons in the RARE II area, and 31,000 tons in the adjacent proposed Trinity Alps Wilderness) contain 0.45 oz gold per ton and probably 0.1 oz silver per ton. There are an additional 150,000 tons of inferred marginal reserves (35,000 tons in the RARE II area, and 115,000 tons in the adjacent proposed wilderness) averaging 0.38 oz gold per ton and probably 0.1 oz silver per ton. There is high potential for additional resources at the Globe Mine.

This is a progress report of an investigation by personnel of the Bureau of Mines from June to September 1951 to introduce preservative chemicals into growing timber. It also describes in detail the impregnation process, known as the collar method, developed by the United States Department of Agriculture2/ Twenty-eight trees were treated by this method, and a complete record was kept of each individual tree and of each timber cut from it. These timbers have been placed in a coal mine, and their tendency to decay is compared to that of adjacent untreated sets. Although several years will be required before final conclusions can be drawn, this report explains the appearance and encouraging results of the treated timber to date. Also included are some comparative costs of untreated timber, treated timber by the commercial pressure method, and treated timber by the collar method. INTRODUCTION In the hope of increasing the useful life of cut timber, experiments to impregnate growing trees with wood-preservative chemicals by utilizing the natural flow of sap have been carried on for centuries. None of the various methods used in these experiments has ever gained any widespread use because they have been commercially impractical.

This report gives the principles of the method used by the Helium Research Center of the Bureau of Mines when solving nonlinear-regression problems and contains the mathematical equations necessary to accomplish the following objectives: the evaluation of the parameters in such a way that the sum of the weighted squares of the residuals of an experimental observable is a true minimum, regardless of the functional relationship between the variables and these parameters; and the evaluation of all variances and covariances of the parameters by means of the usual approximation of the law for the propagation of errors.

A hvab coal was carbonized in a closed system at 600 ° C and 40 to 1 , 200 psig to produce a high- Btu gas and char . By retaining the volatiles within the system, it was possible to virtually eliminate production of tars and oils . Depending on pressure and residence time , yields of combustible gases (72 to 92 percent methane ) amounted to 4,000 to 6,000 cubic feet per ton of maf coal and gross heating values of these gases varied from 830 to 960 Btu per cubic foot . Yields of char (maf ) were about 1,600 pounds per ton of maf coal . Increased residence time favored production of gases but reduced their heating values , whereas increase in pressure resulted in somewhat higher heating values and lower production . Similar effects were observed from the carbonization of a low- temperature tar . If these results could be translated to an economical carbonization process for producing high- Btu gas from coal , the demand for coal could be expanded by 40 to 50 million tons per year . Because of large yields of char , a process of this type would obviously have to be integrated with coal - fired power plants . Fortunately , operations could be conducted at essentially atmospheric pressure as product gas under this condition can be obtained in satisfactory yields and with good quality .

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small--scale continuous tests of weathered mica pegmatite ores from Hart County, Ga., to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. Two modifications of the Bureau-developed anionic-cationic method were used. In one method, sodium carbonate and calcium lignin sulfonate were used for pH control and quartz depression; this method yielded mica concentrates containing 98.5 percent mica with a recovery of 91.4 percent. In the other modification, lime and sodium silicate were used with the calcium lignin sulfonate; concentrates containing 98.9 percent mica with a recovery of 86 percent were obtained.

The Bureau of Mines has developed an automated reflectance scanning microscope system, primarily for determination of volume proportions, size distribution, and mode of association of the physical (petrographic) components of coals. The process, which is potentially more rapid and objective and less tedious than a visual microscopic procedure, involves magnetic tape recording of several millions of reflectance readings on micro-meter sized areas of polished coal surface and computer analysis and interpretation of some characteristics of the coal components. The system was tested in a study of pyrite distribution in steam coals. The application was essentially successful, but defects in polished pyrite surface characteristics and problems in adequate sampling prevented completely satisfactory results. Pyrite con-tent and coal-pyrite particle association could be determined nearly as well as by visual microscopy, but size distribution data were less acceptable.
