This report describes the results of a study of longwall ignition hazards and specific suppression systems to minimize each of the major hazards. The major ignition hazards were identified by conducting a literature search and conversing with knowledgeable individuals in the United States mining industry. Three classes of potential ignition suppression systems are discussed: triggered suppression systems for face ignition, passive suppression systems, and control of ignition hazard in the gob. The triggered suppression systems included protection for the shearer, head and tail gates, welding equipment, and the shearer power cable. Passive systems include improved ventilation and water sprays, and charges in the shearer head. Gob protection can be improved by isolating the gob from working areas and by introducting inerting agents into the gob.

As mining operations in the United States (US) have become more productive, controlling the dust exposure of mine workers has become more challenging. In response, US mining operations are applying basic controls at elevated levels and are looking to emerging control tech­nologies in an effort to better control airborne respirable dust levels. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research to develop and/or improve control technologies that reduce the respirable dust exposure of workers in underground coal mines. The goals of this research involve optimizing the use of water sprays and ventilating air, as well as, evaluating emerging control tech­nologies. An overview of dust controls typically utilized in underground US coal mines will be provided. An update on ongoing PRL research efforts that are evaluating new control technologies will also be presented.

In the manufacture of steel by any process the refining period involves the partial elimination of the metalloids carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and silicon, by virtue of their reactions with ferrous oxide. At the end of this refining stage the metal consists chiefly of iron in which small amounts of these materials are dissolved. Unless some deoxidizer is added to the steel at this time, the reaction between carbon and ferrous oxide will continue with such force that it is impossible to form sound steal in the ingot molds. Instead, the product will exhibit a marked porosity due to the formation and trapping of carbon monoxide-the product of the reaction mentioned. However, if deoxidizers are added, steel may be obtained which is dense and free from gas bubbles. At the same time the deoxidation products will remain in the steal as impurities. For example, silicon additions form Si02 or combinations of Si02 and FeO. Additions of manganese form deoxidation products consisting of various proportions of MnO and FeO. It is also quite obvious that simultaneous additions of manganese and silicon will form oxide combinations either in the binary system MnO-SiO2 or in the ternary system FeO-MnO-SiO2. Work at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Metallurgical Advisory Board, involved the study of such deoxidizing reactions and their products. In this connection considerable information is necessary concerning FeO, MeO, Si02, and Al 203, and their various combinations. Some of the most needed data are the melting points of all of these materials. At the outset of this work ordinary methods of melting point determinations were found to be inadequate for various reasons, and the procedure finally selected involved the use of the micropyrometer with occasional corroboration by quenching methods, The reasons for this selection, together with a description of the apparatus, are given in the following pages.

AGAIN in 1963, as in nearly every year since 1946, the Canadian mineral industry has established a new national record in value of mineral production. The 1963 estimated total value of $2,976 million is 5 percent higher than the 1962 value of $2,845 million.2 As in previous years, metals made up more than half the value of total production. For selected years since 1949 the category percentages and total value are as follows: [ ] Crude petroleum, Canada's most valuable mineral product, accounted for 21 percent of the total value of minerals in 1963. In descending order came nickel 12 percent, iron ore 10 percent, copper 10 percent, gold 5 percent, and uranium 5 percent. Asbestos accounted for 5 percent, sand and gravel 4 percent, and cement 4 percent. The complete list of Canada's mineral products includes more than 50 basic commodities.

"INTRODUCTION In a previous report3 prepared for the American Gas Association, the influence of washing coal on coke properties and on gas and by-product yields was discussed on the basis of answers to questionnaires sent to coke-oven superintendents and a review of the literature on the subject. This review indicated that the elimination of free impurities by cleaning coal improved coke quality by (a) reducing ash and sulphur, (b) decreasing clinker trouble in burning the coke, (c) diminishing cross fractures in the coke, resulting in greater resistance to breakage on handling, and less small coke and breeze, and (d) greater uniformity in chemical composition and physical properties of coke. Washing also reduced the sulphur in coke and gas and increased the yield of gas and by-products per ton of dry coal charged.This paper is supplementary to the previous report and presents some experimental data obtained with Pittsburgh bed coal from Pennsylvania and Mary Lee bed coal from Alabama.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSGrateful acknowledgment is made to F. As part of the Bureau of Mines titanium resources examination program, samples of altered rock (saprolite) and unaltered rock from the Roseland anorthosite near Roseland, Nelson County, Va., were tested for amenability to beneficiation by flotation. A flotation technique was developed to produce bulk concentrates of ilmenite, rutile, sphene, and leucoxene. It was necessary to first float apatite using oleic acid as the collector, in an alkaline pulp with dextrine as a titanium mineral depressant. The titanium minerals could then be floated from the apatite tailing, using fluosilicic acid to depress the remaining apatite, morin to depress ferromagnesian minerals (when present), and oleic acid as the collector. A bulk titanium mineral concentrate, analyzing 66.0 percent Ti02 and 0.08 percent P205, was obtained from a sample of the unaltered rock which contained 5.45 percent TiO2 and 2.81 percent P205. Overall recovery in the concentrate was 47.1 percent of the total TiO2 in the ore. About 55 to 65 percent of the saprolite sample was clay and was removed by attrition scrubbing and decantation. The apatite prefloat procedure was applied to the saprolite sands; subsequent titanium mine: 1 flotation recovered 72.2 percent of the Ti02 in a bulk concentrate containing 65.1 percent TiO2 and 0.20 percent P205.

The testing procedures of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration specify that intrinsic safety acceptance tests be conducted using a standard tungsten-cadmium electrode configuration in the break- flash apparatus. However, in realistic mining environments, other materials may be more likely sources of sparking. Information defining the probability of spark ignition between common materials such as aluminum, brass, copper, lead, tin, cold-rolled steel, and stainless steel is of more practical value in determining ignition hazards. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has completed an investigation of the influence of material on the ignition probability using the breakflash apparatus. By comparing ignition currents or ignition voltages corresponding to a probability of one ignition per thousand sparks to those found previously for cadmium, a margin of safety may be estimated for each material. This report presents the results of an investigation into the influence of disk electrode material on the probability of ignition.

7253. Arkhangelsky, A. D. Geological Results of the General Magnetometric and Gravimetric Surveys of the U.S.S.R. (in Russian). Internat. Geol. Cong., Rep. of the 17th Sess., Moscow-Leningrad, 1937, vol. 1, Moscow, 1939, pp. 241-250. Geophysical methods have been used in the U.S.S.R. to study geological problems. Such is the case of the general magnetometric and gravimetric surveys made jointly by the Main Physical Observatory, Main Office of Geodesy and Cartography, Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, and Main Office of Geophysical Prospecting. Some institutions supplied the data, others processed them. Geological interpretation was made by the author. (1) Regional magnetic anomalies in the plains of the U.S.S.R. are traceable to the folded substratum overlain by sedimentary rocks; these anomalies promise to yield data characterizing the substratum in respect to strike and depth. Anomalies in European U.S.S.R. suggest that the pre-Cambrian -substratum of the East European plateau consists of elements of different ages. In the most ancient of them, the main strike of the folding is almost latitudinal; in the younger ones, the folding is oriented in the meridian. (2) The Faye and Bouguer gravity anomalies are caused primarily by differences in the density of rocks composing the upper crust and by unknown processes producing changes of density at depth; these processes are not connected with isosiatic movements. The anomalies in the European and adjoining Asiatic U.S.S.R. promise to indicate the volume of the pre-Cambrian massif of the east-European plateau and to clarify the interrelations between the Ural, Tian-Shan, and Donetz Basin folding systems, as well as between the Dnieper-Donetz depression and the mid-European depression. - V. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the use of close-range photogrammetry and subsequent stereo digitizing to obtain data from rock fracture roughness profiles. The photogrammetric process yielded results that were acceptable but somewhat inferior to those obtained by a mechanical profilometer. On the basis of this study, further pursuit of photogrammetry as a data collection method in mining is proposed. Fractal geometry was investigated as a means of measuring the roughness of rock fracture profiles. Four fractal algorithms were used: divider method, modified divider method, box method, and spectral method. A comparison of the methods gave ambiguous results. Brown's modified divider method provided the best means of obtaining the fractal dimension. Shear strength estimates were obtained using the parameters of the modified divider method and Myers' Z, measure. Because of differences in results when comparing the different ways of obtaining the fractal dimension, future users of fractals in studies of rock fractures are advised to cross-check their results carefully.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1978, 12 companies operated 31 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 65% of production capacity. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 31% of the total capacity; Gulf Coast States 23%; Northern States 26%; and other Southern States 20%. Based on published producer prices, output of primary metal in 1978 was valued at $5 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1978, building accounted for about 25%; packaging 22%; transportation 23%; electrical 11%; consumer durables 8%; and other uses 11%.

To help insure the continued viability of the minerals and materials sector of the U.S. economy, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research and disseminating technology that will result in more efficient minerals extraction. As part of this effort, a process is being investigated that involves an aqueous chlorine-oxygen leaching procedure to treat complex sulfide concentrates to produce ZnCl2. Subsequent fused-salt electrolysis of the ZnCI2 produces high-purity zinc metal. Previous reports described preliminary, small-scale research on the chlorine-oxygen leaching system and fused-salt electrolysis of ZnCl2. This report discusses the details of design, construction, and longterm, continuous operation of both monopolar and bipolar fused-salt cells. The effects of temperature, electrode gap, current density, electrolyte composition, and electrode configuration on current efficiency and energy consumption were determined for a ZnCl2-KC1-NaCl electrolyte system. Zinc metal was produced at the rate of about 50 lb/day in a monopolar cell which was operated continuously for 60 days with current efficiencies from 85.8 to 98.6 pct and an average power consumption of 2.1 kwhr/lb. Bipolar cells with several different electrode configurations were operated for 90 days. A current efficiency of about 70 pct and power consumption of about 1.7 kwhr/lb of zinc were achieved using a three-electrode-pair, bipolar assembly with a chlorine gas lift pump to circulate electrolyte.

The Bureau of Mines investigated extraction of aluminum from aluminum-silicon alloys as a means of utilizing domestic aluminum silicate ores for aluminum production. Aluminum was extracted from aluminum-silicon alloys by electrolysis in molten electrolytes of NaCl-KCI-AIC13 and NaCl-KCI-AIF3 in a laboratory-scale cell. Six alloys with aluminum contents ranging from 20 to 87 percent aluminum were tested, and aluminum products of primary grade or better were obtained. More than 80 percent of the aluminum was recovered with current efficiencies as high as 91 percent. Recovery of a metallurgical-grade silicon product from the anode residue by an acid leaching procedure was possible with the 50-50 and 65-35 Al-Si alloys.

This paper is a preliminary report on recent lode gold mining activity, operating conditions, and mining and milling methods at properties in production in September 1936 in the gold belt of northeastern Oregon. A few inactive properties are described also. Districts, inactive in 1936, that have been important producers at some time in the past are mentioned briefly. This is one of a series of similar papers describing western mining districts. The past production record of the gold mines of northeastern Oregon entitles the region to be ranked as one of the important gold-mining regions of the United States. Although comparatively inactive for many years, lode mining in the region has recently undergone a marked revival.

"INTRODUCTION This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines pertaining to an investigation on the use of stemming in metal mines now being conducted at the Mount Weather Testing Adit. Its purpose is to compare the amount of dust and gases produced as a result of blasting charges of dynamite (1) in drill holes, (2) in bombs, and (3) in mud-cap or adobe shots.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSValuable assistance and advice on stemming were given by members of the staff at the Bureau of Mines, as acknowledged in previous publications. 4/TEST PROCEDUREThe results used for comparison in this report are from dust and gas samples taken after blasting (1) four regular test rounds with no stemming, (2) five bomb shots, and (3) two mud-cap or adobe shots.The four rounds were the standard 26-hole test rounds designed to break 4 feet of rock. The procedure for drilling and blasting these rounds is described in Report of Investigations 3509.Before the regular test rounds were blasted, about 1,200 bounds of fine rock was placed on the steel mucking sheets that covered the end of the adit track; the wails, hack, and floor of the adit were washed thoroughly; and the fine rock on the mucking sheets was completely wetted.Each of the 5 bomb shots consisted of 10 sticks of dynamite tied together and hung at midpoint of the adit, 8 feet from the fall."

The Bureau of Mines has conducted field studies in coal mines throughout the United States to determine the effectiveness of electromagnetic techniques in locating miners trapped underground following a mine accident. Data from these tests have been used to generate models of expected signal and noise distributions as found above these mines. These distributions have aided in placing the expected performance of a through-the-earth electromagnetic communications technique into a probabilistic framework. Results show that at a 10% false-alarm rate, the expected probability o detecting a miner's signal" from a depth of 1000 ft is 54% at 500 ft it is 95%. These depths exceed the actual depths of 90 and 50%, respectively, of United States coal mines. Sensitivity studies have shown that at depth of 1000 ft, the probability of detection will improve approximately 2% for each dB of increase in signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio.
