Through the 119 year history of the Homestake Mine various methods of raise mining have been used, these include conventional, bored, and drop raises. These raises provide passage for men and supplies, provide ventilation, transfer broken rock from level to level, and serve as emergency escapeways. As the 1980’s came to a close, many of the larger ore bodies in the mine had been mined out. This has resulted in many crown pillar situations that required a method to mine them. In addition, the Homestake ore body also contains numerous ore reserves that have short vertical height. The ore itself can be from vertical to 50 degrees in dip. Due to the high cost of drift and ramp development many of these ore bodies are subeconomic using conventional mechanized cut and fill mining.

There are several methods for demolition of structures but most of them depend mostly on conventional ways of using machines for breaking and crushing structural elements. However the need for lots of work force, expense and extreme amount of time for demolition, made most of these methods non-popular nowadays. Therefore, trials to accomplish a more economic and less time taking method lasted with the use of blasting. By applying controlled blasting on a suitable structure, the structure can collapse and break down to pieces in very short period of time, with no extra work force and cost. In spite of advantages of explosive demolition, the potential danger of explosives and the damage that the blasting may cause to surrondings, if not controlled properly, made people timid to the method especially in urban areas. Therefore, the pre-assumption by computational analysis has become an essential matter in the process.

In March of 2001 Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. began evaluating the potential benefits of electronic detonators at the Betze Post open pit gold mine. The original evaluation focused on increased fragmentation, and excavator productivity. During the original evaluation there was an attempt to quantify mill throughput. Early tests indicated that there would be a benefit to mill throughput, however management was hesitant to take on the added cost of electronic detonators based on the initial evaluation. In early 2002 a decrease in mill throughput was being forecast as a result of harder ore being encountered. As a result of the initial electronic detonator evaluation a team of individuals from the Open Pit and Process areas worked closely on the Drill-to-Mill (D2M) Continuous Improvement initiative. This initiative was targeted at improving mill throughput as the harder ores were encountered. Batch tests were conducted to determine if adjustments to drilling and blasting in the open pit could increase mill throughput and justify a 50% increase in drilling and blasting costs for the harder ore material.

One of the key factors that controls the overall profitability of surface operations is the required volume of excavated material. If the overall angle of final walls can be maximized the amount of material excavated will be reduced. However, as the slope angle becomes steeper the wall's factor of safety decreases. As a result, the development and implementation of efficient wall control blast designs becomes critical to achieving stable walls. Many site specific conditions should be taken into account when defining the methods that will be used to lessen blast induced wall damage. This paper will discuss the steps needed to properly evaluate the site and develop efficient designs. Four variations of wall control blast designs will be evaluated in terms of cost and performance. In addition, the paper will include the quality controls needed to successfully implement and refine the blast design.

The practice of dual initiation using precise timing from electronic detonators in boreholes is thought to be beneficial for increasing fragmentation at a desired location in the rock strata. This increased capacity for fragmentation is understood to be a product of both the collision of detonation waves in the explosive column and an increased energy liberation rate, each resulting from dual initiation. In addition, the collision of shock waves from two adjacent blast holes is suggested to improve fragmentation at the location the two shock waves meet, which can be controlled with precise timing. This paper presents the results from scaled laboratory experiments where converging detonation waves and shock waves were studied.

In a previous paper, it was shown that a lack of clear understanding of the role of initiation mode on detonation characteristics often leads to under-utilization of the explosive system in blasting. This is of particular significance since the very large number of explosive initiation practices currently in use implicitly assumes that the blasting performance of an explosive is largely independent of the exact mode of initiation. This paper deals specifically with bulk-loaded and pneumatically-loaded ANFO under various initiation modes in small diameters. These include initiation by booster and detonating cords of various strengths, and combination of cords and boosters. The nature of energy release and energy partitioning between shock and gas energy have been studied in the underwater test as a function of charge diameter. The paper describes the relative merits of various initiation modes for specific charge geometries and confinement, under end- and side-initiated conditions. Guidelines have also been formulated for use in the field to match initiation practice with blasting requirements.

The principal disturbances created by blasting in open pit mines are vibrations, air blast and fly rock. All of them, under some circumstances, caused damage to structures nearby and apart from this can be the source of permanent conflict with the inhabitations who live close to the operation. Therefore, prediction of ground vibration components is of great importance for the minimisation of the environmental complaints. This paper presents the result of ground vibration measurements induced by bench blasting realised at Can Open Pit Coal Mine located close to the residential area of Can town. Within the scope of this study, in order to predict peak particle velocity and determine the slope of the attenuation curve for this site, ground vibration components were measured for blast events during bench blast optimisation studies over a long period. During the study, while the parameters of scaled distance were recorded carefully, the ground vibration components were measured by means of two different types vibration monitors (White Mini-Seis and Instantel Minimate Plus Model) for 54 blast events. At the end of evaluation an empirical relationship with reasonable correlation was established between peak particle velocity and scaled distance for this site.

Numerical modelling of fragmentation and throw is used to provide information on practical blast design parameters. The function of airdecking and its practical implications, the importance of the initiation point and aspect ratio of cratering charges and the timing between adjacent blastholes are investigated. Accuracy requirements for detonators are discussed with emphasis placed on the volume and fragmentation of the blasted rock, and compared to experimental results. Practical guidelines which have been based on intuition are examined using the model. Some of the predictions have been tested and correlate well with experimental results, obtained in the laboratory. Findings show that a minimum airdeck length is needed to realize any benefit from the application of airdecking in production blasting while the process can enhance the shock energy provided by non-ideal explosives significantly, bottom initiation of charges is beneficial to fragmentation and the aspect ratio for cratering charges can exceed the traditionally accepted ratio of 6. Regarding timing, in the ease of cratering charges, true simultaneous initiation shows beneficial results for the volume of blasted rock; however the accuracy required for practical detonators is very high. Fragmentation improves after a certain delay time while the optimum can be achieved at a range of delays. Timing affects muckpile shape; however it appears that subtle differences in delay times do not have a significant effect.

During the reconstruction of the motorway Zagreb-Krapina three reinforced concrete bridges were demolished, for their width was not adequate for the new motorway. Demolition of the three bridges was carried out by blasting as duration of the traffic cut on the motorway and the railway was limited to maximally 4 hours. During that period of time the demolished bridges had to be removed. Therefore, very tiny granulation was requested suitable for loading and not endangering the surrounding structures. Before each of three main blasting, trial blasting were carried out including the seismic measurements registering the seismic effects. The nearest residential building was at the distance of less than 30 m from the place of blasting. Additional difficulty was the fact that by each of the three bridges there is a new bridge, with minimal distance between the old and the new bridge being 30 cm. As each of the bridges is of different construction and of various thickness, particular blasting technique has been prepared for each one of the bridges.

Some facilities require ground vibration limits that are far below typical vibration levels of interest in most blasting situations. A possibly extreme example of such a facility might be the proposed SSC (Supercollider Super Conductor) high energy particle study system. The applicability of conventional blast vibration predictors for such a low amplitude vibration is highly uncertain. For this preliminary study, a series of field measurements are made, and the results integrated in a set of vibration predictor equations. Ground vibrations induced by blasting operations at one proposed SSC site are monitored at close distances (hundreds of feet), intermediate distances (miles), and long distances (tens of miles) from the blasts. Peak particle velocities are recorded at short distances, ground displacements at other points, as well as frequencies. Theoretical analyses are performed by integrating all data in a variety of ground vibration predictors. From the statistical analysis of the data, ground motions at various points along the ring site are predicted for a given charge weight. The approach taken appears adequate for making tentative estimates of exceedingly low amplitude vibrations at great distances from mine blasts.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) is undertaking one of the nations largest water management projects. The Eastside Reservoir Project is being built to insure a supply of water to Southern California in the event of earthquake damage to the aqueducts supplying the region. An 800,000-acre-ft lake will result from the three dams, closing off the valley between two parallel ridges. The single largest contract of the project, the West Dam, was awarded to the joint venture of Atkinson Construction Co., Washington Construction Co. (Morrison Knudsen Co.), and HB Zachry Co. Over 50 million bank cubic yards of rock must be drilled and shot on this contract alone. AWZ relies on the TechBASE database management system for documenting drilling and blasting. The database format of TechBASE allows all production parameters to be linked to the location of the activity. This allows parameters such as drill penetration or boulder production to be analyzed for geologic trends that can either be exploited or dealt with. Shot locations are stored as 3D polygons in a polygon table. Production and cost data are stored in flat tables. Shot names are unique and link the polygon table to the flat table. This allows typical database queries to be made by date, location, cost or any production parameter. The output from these queries can be presented in table, graph and as map formats. The map output is particularly helpful in quantifying geologic conditions and blast performance. The ability to transform the data into information has been very helpful. The ability to present this information graphically has been invaluable.

The quiet banks of the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio, received a wake-up call July 16 as two smokestacks in the Marina District were leveled with dynamite. B&B Wrecking, Inc. of Cleveland contracted the project with the city to bring down the twin stacks, both measuring over 250 feet tall. The structures were part of the Toledo Edison Steam Plant and were erected nearly a hundred years ago. A week’s worth of preparation went into final planning, drilling and loading holes with over 80 pounds of explosives. The felling went precisely as planned as onlookers cheered as the stacks were reduced to rubble.

Remote Avalanche Control Systems (RACS) which uses solid explosives has been used in Europe since 1996 and North America since 1999. With large destructive avalanches in transportation corridors, various States and Provinces have started implementing RACS into their summer construction projects to minimize traffic shutdowns. Since 2014 in North America, many of the projects are requiring the RACS deployment boxes to be removable by light duty helicopter for loading and summer storage. This is to further remove workers from the mountain tops, where inclement weather and Occupational Health and Safety concerns are widespread. We did not believe the method of flying primed charges under a helicopter was safe, so we developed a new charge container to deal with the issue.

This Limestone site required the removal of a bench containing high quality rock located in close proximity to sump and pit pump. The sump and associated electrical box were below the bench that needed to be blasted and located only 70 feet (21.33 meters) away. It was proposed to blast material needed without moving or disturbing the pump or electrical junction box. The area to be blasted was flown with a drone and stitched into a 3D orthographic model. Proprietary blast design software was used to create a blast design solution that would allow for a series of blasts that would provide required fragmentation and muckpile development and not disturb the sump or electrical box. A drill patten was created for each blast using the burden heat map and 3D face profiles created from the 3D orthographic model. Timing contour lines and muckpile displacement predictions were used to create timing sequences for proper face movement away from the sump and electrical box. The shot designs were laid out with a GPS system to insure hole location accuracy. All holes were remeasured for proper face burdens using the 3D model and Boretrak®® data collected after drilling operations were completed to insure hole locations were within face burden tolerances as derived by the burden heat map. After each drill log was reviewed, a charge loading scenario was created for each hole. The timing design created, for each shot and was reviewed and adjusted as needed with regard to desired muckpile displacement away from the sump and electrical box. Blasting results were satisfactory, with fragmentation and muckpile development consistent with the calculated throw from the blast model, with no rock hitting the pump or box and no rocks striking the sump water and disturbing the pump motor.

We did not believe the method of flying primed charges under a helicopter was safe, so we developed a new charge container to deal with the issue. In spring of 2016, the Inauen Schatti company of Switzerland started the development of a flyable RACS deployment box to complement their 2 stand alone tower systems. To go along with the new flyable deployment box, a new S-Load charge carrier was developed. The newly developed and patented S-Load explosive charge for the LM32 RACS system features a mechanism which combines the explosive and priming material just before the blast. These are stored separately during transport and storage in the LM32 RACS deployment box. The S-load is divided into two parts. The upper part contains the plastic bobbin and ignition sequence (impact pull wire igniter, safety fuse and #8 blasting cap), whereby the explosive material and detonating cord are positioned in the lower part of the explosive container. The explosive material and ignition sequence are separated by a certified housing during transport and storage. The key idea of the S-Load system was to achieve a maximum level of safety by keeping the priming components separate from the explosive material until just before detonation. Because of this the S-Load and the LM32 tower remains safe during transport by helicopter or when being stored in the deployment box on the mountain side in the avalanche start zone.

The regional associations, manufacturers' organizations, and trade associations have proven that it is possible to overcome a hurdle, that looks almost impossible in the beginning, through consistent cooperation. The paper gives an insight into the problems involved in introducing such a requirement, identifies ways and solutions, and concludes them. When looking at the current situation, the paper describes the process by which a prescribed change in business processes are transforming into a solution that increases productivity, security, and handling. It shows examples from daily work, in which possibilities for optimization, improved quality assurance, and work facilitation are explained. It presents the resulting potential by comparing process flows, before and after the introduction of Track & Trace solutions. What challenges will we face in the future concerning the use of T&T solutions? Will the tracking of explosives become the norm worldwide? What are future hardware and software developments to be expected? What impact will this have on the global supply chain?

At a large open cut copper mine, in pit crushing and conveying is used to shorten haul routes and minimise stockpiling of ore. This strategy decreases capital expenditure by reducing the number of haul trucks and excavators required and reduces the need to rehandle ore from stockpiles with a secondary load and haul fleet, with an overall goal of lowering operating costs and carbon emissions. As the mine has developed and expanded, it was necessary to extend the conveying network and install a fourth, semi-mobile crusher to increase the output of the operation, while maintaining the operational efficiencies. This required the blasting of a new tipping bench and pocket for the installation of one of the largest and most powerful semi-mobile, crushing plants. Fed by 360 tonne (396 ton) ultra-heavy class haul trucks, the KB 63-130 Pro gyratory crusher is the highest capacity available in the market. This paper describes the holistic process that was applied to model, design and execute the blasts required to create the pocket for the semi-mobile crusher, the surrounding tipping bench, plus the conveyor corridor and access ramp used by the ultra-heavy class trucks.

The formation of NOx fumes is an undesired occurrence and is dependent on a variety of variables. Methods for detection of such fumes with blast analysis tools are available using color schemes for grading, but no quantification tools to measure concentration and cloud totals exist today. In cooperation with DIRS (Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Laboratory) at RIT in Rochester, NY, Austin Powder has been looking for methods and techniques to identify and quantify total amounts of NOx by capturing cloud activity via a video feed from a drone in combination with measuring NOx and subsequent cloud modeling (i.e., plume segmentation). To accurately measure fume events, Austin Powder and the RIT team have been collaborating in performing small scale blasts at an Austin test facility and then transferring knowledge learned to full scale blasts at customer sites. The collected data will allow to identify any relationships between the total amount of explosives used and the quantity of NOx produced. The analysis of the total amounts of NOx and identification of blast areas those fumes originate from will help to better understand key factors that contribute to their occurrence as well as to quantify the severity of such events. By quantifying the magnitude and concentration of fumes generated by non-ideal detonations, the blasting technique can be optimized to minimize unwanted environmental effects and improve public perception of blasting as a necessary component of societal progress
