Based on the rock blasting engineering, The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) network has been implemented for the concept and method of rock blastability classification. The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is a neural network algorithm which is especially suitable for the analysis and visualization of high-dimensional data. It maps nonlinear statistical relationships between high-dimensional input data into simple geometric relationships, usually on a two-dimensional grid. The mapping roughly preserves the most important topological and metric relationships of the original data elements and, thus, inherently clusters the data. SOM allows easy data fusion enabling visualization and analysis of large databases of rock blasting engineering. As a case study, the classification technique based on SOM has been used to classify the rock mass blastability rank. It can be founded from this paper that the SOM networks can be developed well based on a comprehensive data set of rock blasting engineering.

The current basis for rating of commercial explosives is examined, with particular emphasis on calculated bulk and weight strengths, detonation velocity and underwater energy measurement. The calculated strengths still form the basis for selecting explosives for most blasting applications, with the measured detonation parameters serving only as a measure of the quality of the explosive. The major drawbacks with this approach are discussed, in view of the non-ideal nature of commercial explosives and the field conditions prevalent during the blasting operation. A unified approach to rating explosives on the basis of blasting performance rather than calculated energy alone is presented for various types of explosives. This incorporates the relevant field parameters as well as the effect of non-ideal reactions, both of which affect explosive energy release and its transfer to target rock.

Blasting engineers are mainly concerned about fragmentation issues. Even further, this is the final goal of using explosives. A lot of models have been developed for controlling fragmentation distribution, but most of the time, they are based on physical phenomena using field data as input for rock characteristics. Fragmentation is a result of two phenomena: waves from the borehole, damaging and cracking the rock, and gas pressure, widening those cracks and spreading out rock fragments. This model simulates the P wave escaping from boreholes and the cracks created by these P waves. It takes into account rock characteristics, provided by digital imaging, and explosive characteristics coming from VOD measurements. What we need to focus on, is the interaction of P waves coming from each borehole related to different timing sequences. This paper presents several simulations that show the influence of the timing and the sequence accuracy on the fragmentation distribution.

The Empire Mine initiated production in 1963. Since then the unit operations of drilling and blasting have evolved continually in order to meet the increased mining requirements demanded by plant expansions in 1968, 1973 and 1980. Additionally, advance mine planning has become an integral part of proper pit development and is necessary to insure uniform blending of the distinct ore horizons contained within the mine area. Blasting practices have been modified to facilitate the autogenous grinding system utilized at Empire and pioneered in the Iron Ore Industry. Technical innovations in the explosives industry, as well as, progress regarding on site blast engineering methods have substantially increased the use of ammonium nitrate explosives and helped to establish efficient charging procedures. In addition, the recent introduction and use of ammonium nitrate fueled with nitropropane and methanol indicates that it is a viable substitute for aluminized ANFO.

The fragmentation distribution of the blasted ore is an important descriptor of blasting results. Traditionally it has been hard to measure quantitatively. Developments in image analysis over several years makes it more feasible to measure fragmentation before crushing on a continuous basis. Post crushing, mill feed distributions can also be measured.

PowerAN is a tradename of Atlas Powder Company for a new line of explosive products comprising blends of emulsion and ANFO in a variety of bulk and packaged grades. The bulk PowerAN grades are either augered or pumped depending upon emulsion content. Augered PowerAN blends contain up to 60% emulsion. Pumped PowerAN grades have an emulsion content of 75% or higher. The blending of PowerAN is usually accomplished at the borehole to satisfy specific borehole conditions. Packaged PowerAN grades are produced in several types of mix plants in diameters of 4" and greater. PowerAN 300 (30% emulsion) and PowerAN 500 (50% emulsion) are the two most popular grades and their chief application is as an economical, high energy replacement for ANFO HD in wet holes. PowerAN combines the cost effectiveness of ANFO with the high performance of emulsions, permitting the blasting engineer to strike an optimum balance between drill pattern expansion and increased productivity according to need.

In the past several years, there have been a number of blasting-related carbon monoxide migration incidents. In each case, there have been some common factors that appear to be related to carbon monoxide migration. Geology, heavy confinement of the blast, close proximity to the affected structure, and open pathways into the affected structure are just a few. Prince William County, VA is an area undergoing a boom in suburban development. In the year 2001, more than 4,050 new homes were constructed within the county.1 In the new housing development located in Bristow, VA, trench blasting was utilized to excavate proposed sewage and utility lines. On November 8, 2002, a trench blast was conducted for the installation of utility lines. Later that evening a carbon monoxide detector alarmed in a nearby house. The gas company and fire department sampled for carbon monoxide and measured 100 ppm and more than 200 ppm on the first floor and in the basement respectively. Subsequent efforts to prevent migration of CO into the nearby homes met with mixed results. The only reliable technique for protecting neighbors from CO appears to be the placement of CO monitors in the homes. The events are presented and discussed.

This paper is based on an undergraduate research project undertaken for the explosives emphasis in the UMR mining engineering degree program by the first author. The purpose of the selected research topic was to investigate the impact sensitivity of commercial detonators to determine their relative safety for handling and how much abuse they can take without accidentally firing. A modified BAM tester was used for the investigation. Both electric and non electric detonators were impacted at incremental positions along their length to determine the relative effect of their various components. Repeat impact tests were also conducted to see how a damaged cap would react to repeated abuse. The results indicate that it takes a significant amount of impact energy to initiate commercial detonators. They also indicate that repeated abuse can increase sensitivity. Modern commercial detonators appear to be relatively insensitive to impact (an order of magnitude above RDX in the standard BAM test) and this is mainly due to their construction. This explains why damaged caps with exposed powder are more sensitive. Their measured insensitivity correlates with rough handling not being a major cause of blasting accidents.

A number of studies have evaluated excavation methods for the construction of subsurface facilities for a potential deep geologic repository for the disposal of nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, NV. Many of these studies suggest that where TBM (tunnel boring machine) methods are not applicable and alternative mechanical excavation methods can not efficiently excavate harder rock drill and blast methods may be the most efficient means of excavation. However, a number of concerns regarding drill and blast applications have been raised in these evaluations, most notably the affects of blasting on the surrounding perimeter, as isolation of the waste by the natural barrier of the surrounding rock is a key element in the concept of a deep geologic repository.

On the basis of actual parameter of wall control blast in Nanfeng mine, China, the process of dynamic stress changing between two column charges was studied recently for a presplit-cushion blast by holographic photoelasticity. In the experimental model, two holes were simultaneously detonated from both ends (four ignition points). The bottom of the holes were loaded more than other parts (heavy charge). Under these conditions, four consecutive isochromatic fringe patterns at different times were acquired in one loading run, and the characteristics of the stress distributions were compared at different places and times in the holes. It was found that interaction types of stress waves vary along the holes. The theory is posed that the stress wave which is formed by the interaction of earlier producing P wave and later S wave along a distributed line charge is the most important part in all stress waves. Research indicates that a heavy charge in the bottom of the holes is crucial to producing a presplit-cushion effect at the bottom. "End Effect" doesn't affect the magnitude of stress along linking lines between the bottoms. The chief fields of the "End Effect" are also explained in the paper.

AEL has been developing electronic detonators continuously since 1986. It launched its first system for opencast mining in 1993, and now has two distinct product lines. The path has not been without great difficulty, but the determination to persevere was always buoyed by the strong encouragement of customers who experienced the transformed blasting results, as well as a clear vision of the enormous intrinsic value of the concept. The path of growth to dominant global supplier is traced through the separate application channels of coal stripping, quarrying, massive mining, opencast mining and narrow reef mining, to the first allelectronic detonator demolition blast in June 2001. Reasons for the slow coming to market of this highly desirable concept, which often coincide with reasons for the demise of various other systems, include the difficulty of safely mating electronics and explosives in a low cost environment; the extreme difficulties of achieving proper connection under mining conditions; the rapid rate of evolution of the technology, and the safety concerns raised by various accidents and incidents along the way. ED.s are now established as the way forward and are set to displace other systems in all serious applications. There is place for both programmable and pre-set delay systems.

The supply crunch and cost rise for ammonium nitrate (AN) over the past year have been influenced by a number of factors. These include a general inflationary tendency, particularly great cost rises in fuel, and by a market condition in which demand for ammonium nitrate is great and supply is limited. Demand is largely confined to agricultural and explosives uses with explosives subdivided into mining, construction, and quarrying. The projections show that demand may be expected to increase markedly for the indefinite future in the agricultural and mining sectors of the ammonium nitrate market while fluctuating with indicators of economic activity for the construction and the quarrying sectors. Supply is projected to increase with plants being designed and built due to high need levels and commensurately high profit potential but not enough are planned to provide an equilibrium market. Constraints upon supply increases to match demand increases include shortages in the raw material, natural gas, high cost of investment capital, high equipment costs and long construction delays. The result should be, even under optimistic conditions, considerable shortage and resultant pressure for higher prices through 1979 for ammonium nitrate. The best hope for relief in the intervening years appears to be conservation. In blasting operations, the earliest and best proven route to conservation seems to be improved utilization available from application of highest available technology and most efficient current blasting practice.

Computational techniques in determining particle size distributions after blasting is getting wide acceptance. A well known approach to extract this kind of information from digital images is edge detection. The number of edge points on a given image increase proportional to the increase of the particles on the image. By selecting a conveniently smooth threshold, counting the signed edge pixels may be a suitable metric further used to quantify the number of particles in the image. Here we propose an image processing algorithm together with Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) to efficiently count the rock particles with various sizes on a given surface. To determine a suitable approximation for a mapping between the number of edge pixels and the number of particles, ANFIS is a suitable tool. As a trainable classifier ANFIS proved itself as being better efficient approach than other well known multilayer perceptron classifiers. ANFIS is trained by using convenient training data pairs previously experienced from empirically counted sample images. When given a new image containing the particle information of selected surface, the hybrid neuro fuzzy image processing approach provides satisfying performance on counting the correct number of particles up to the given scale of sizes. In this paper an experimantal study for assessment of particle size using ANFIS is presented.

In August, 1980, while finishing construction of the new stack, one of the flues mysteriously collapsed, killing three people and injuring several others. Several months later a British international steeple-jack company was hired to demolish the remaining portion and make a detailed inspection of the balance of the chimney. During this contract almost one hundred core samples were taken from all parts of the structure including the 32-inch thick base. As the result of these tests and the investigation, the Power Company decided to demolish the complete structure. Because of the critical time element, the decision was made to use explosives in the removal of the structure. To give you some perspective as to the size and dimension of the stack, it was 900 feet tall, 80 feet in diameter at the base, and 70 feet in diameter at the top. The two remaining flues were 25 feet in diameter and extended 30 feet beyond the top slab of the chimney. The outside of the structure was referred to as a wind shield. The lower 120 feet were 32 inches thick and the remaining 780 feet were 12 inches thick. The decision was made to prepare and shoot the chimney at the 120-foot elevation because the debris from the collapsed flue was confined in the base section and could not be easily removed. After extensive and costly engineering, we determined it was necessary to construct steel columns to bear on the lower 120-foot section, which would act as a hinge and guide during the dropping of the structure.

This paper consists of the conduct of a forensic criminal investigation of the components, construction, use, and functioning of two suicide bombs. As the title states, the task was to form professional opinions as to whether the bombs would work, would cause property damage, and would injure or kill. The bombs were created and installed by a defendant in a Federal death penalty case where the defendant’s daughter was killed in a shootout with the West Virginia State Police. The two black powder bombs were placed under the front seats of the defendant’s automobile and were designed to function by the use of a toggle switch connected to the automobile’s cigarette lighter. The forensic work first consisted of an inspection of the remains of the wiring system and bombs at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Laboratory, in Ammendale, MD. This was necessary to determine and detail the wire diameter and lengths, the lengths and size of the wire used, the type of toggle switch used, the type of containers, the type of rocket motors used to initiate the black powder, the manufacturer and amount of black powder used in each bomb, and the type, wraps, and amount of duct tape used for the construction of each bomb. Using this data, tests were conducted by duplicating the wiring system and the two bombs to insure that the system functioned properly. Each bomb was duplicated and initiated to observe the violence produced when initiated in the open air. Duplicate bombs were placed under the seats of a similar type of automobile and initiated. The purposes of the tests were to duplicate the bombs, to observe the violence of the initiation, and to observe the damages to the automobile produced by the initiation.

The Industrialization of a country depends on its mining activities to a great extent. In mineral production, India has a top rank not only in South Asia, at the global level too. Quantum of mineral production is almost directly proportional to the quantum of explosive production. Mining sector consume more than 80% of country’s explosive production. Due to rapid growth of mining activities in the country, the explosives industry has been developing very fast in terms of quantity, quality and types. , In this paper, India’s post independent chronological date regarding use of explosives, their types, their constraints and a profile of well-known manufacturers has been meticulously presented. A production figure for three years with system analysis has been presented. The paper also deals with present consumption pattern while making a futuristic forecast. In view of the anticipated changes that are to take place in mining industries in near future, the manufacturers of explosives have to pay a vital role. The paper highlights some concrete and valuable suggestions and recommendations. Small scale Companies have to limit their production to Slurry and Emulsion types of Cartridged explosives whereas the large manufacturing units have to concentrate on Bulk explosives, specialized explosives and better initiating systems. The large manufacturing units have also to make all concerted efforts to compete with global market for significant export. The Country for its rapid growth needs basic raw materials like Coal, Iron Ore and Limestone. So, the extraction of these minerals is of prime importance. The more we produce and consume, the more will be Industrialization. The Industrial growth rate has been around 6% during the last few years. As the Industrial growth rate is moderate, there is moderate increase in mineral extraction in the Country. Additional mineral extraction demands additional explosive production (Annexure-1).

The use of explosives to safely fell structures can be traced back over 300 years. Since then, dozens of chemists, inventors, blasters and demolition experts worldwide have played prominent roles in the evolution of what has become the modern-day explosive demolition industry. In America, one of the earliest applications of explosive demolition occurred in response to the great fires of San Francisco, where homes and businesses were blasted with gunpowder in a desperate attempt to create firewalls. Later in the 19th century, inventions such as nitroglycerine, dynamite and blasting caps made structural blasting a safe, efficient alternative to conventional demolition methods. The 20th century brought the first experiments in shaped charge technology, and this, combined with developments in portable seismology and non-electric delay systems, allowed an ever-expanding variety of structures to be explosively felled by demolition experts throughout the country. The 1950s and .60s brought a new wave of commercial structural-blasting entrepreneurs (several of whom are still active today), and their efforts towards improving adjacent-structure protection and public relations beget the felling of large commercial buildings in dense urban environments. By the late 1980s, publicity-driven motives were gaining greater influence in the decision to .implode. various structures, and the transformation of blasting operations into promotional spectator events played a role in several injuries and fatalities. Since that time, however, a renewed sense of responsibility practiced by most blasting firms and project officials has resulted in the safe, successful completion of hundreds of recent endeavors. In sum, what appears today as an efficient, economical - and visually spectacular - way to demolish structures has its roots in developments of the past several centuries

Differences exist between public perception of construction blasting and quarry blasting. In general, people are able to tolerate short term inconveniences much better than long term ones. The paper focuses on the public perception of quarry blasting in St. Charles County, MO. This expanding urban environment has seen new legislation targeting preexisting quarry operations that have been in place for many years. A survey was made comprising interviews conducted to gauge perceptions of persons with varying demographics. Interviews covered topics involved with quarry blasting and its reporting methods. The purpose of the interviews was to determine public perception of blasting and how best to report results of vibration measurements. The use of different, less technically complicated measurement scales for vibration and airblast was considered as an alternative reporting system. The question for the industry is, “Has our past haste in adopting complex scientific scales and units been detrimental to us?” In other words, are we reporting the correct things? For airblast, the decibel scale was evaluated against millibar in the public eye. Peak Particle Velocity was also compared to that for displacement. Current legislation in the county is based on complaint levels rather than damage criteria. The complaints most likely not only come from ignorance to the affects of blasting on structures, but also sparse understanding of the units used to report these affects. The past practice of treading softly as an industry has been proven to be a poor choice, and education of the public as well as lawmakers on all levels is necessary. The Mississippi Valley Chapter of ISEE has begun to conduct seminars to this end. One educational seminar has taken place for officials and lawmakers in the St. Louis area, and others are in the planning stages. The focus of this paper is to gauge perception of the damage criteria reported today, and locate focal points for future education of the public in rapidly expanding suburban environments.

Blaster training manuals used by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) and others are outdated and cumbersome. A new approach has been developed using Microsoft PowerPoint with a Visual Basic overlay to produce modules on CD’s that present state of the art blasting techniques. The education modules contain enhanced information on topics such as explosives and initiation products, blast design, drilling, and vibration control. The content is based on safe practices and illustrated with numerous photographs and movies. Review questions, complete with explanations for incomplete answers, enhance the learning process and keep the blaster involved. The benefits of using an electronic format include the ability to continually change and update the training modules as new products, technology and applications become available. In addition, the blaster can work at home in preparation for class work and may reduce the time away from the job. This poster session presentation will allow potential users to view and take part in the evaluation of these modules.
