Continuous Reflectometry for Radius vs Time Experiments (CORRTEX) was used to monitor several conditions of blasts such as the detonation velocity of the explosive column, the functioning of different types of initiators and initiation schemes, and the behavior of the stemming column confining the explosive. The CORRTEX data were also used to deduce the occurrence of dead pressing of ANFO slurry. Measurements of propagation speeds of shock waves in the stem column with various cables allowed some conclusions concerning bridging, stem failure, and stress levels in the stem.

"Recently, an effort was made to calibrate the Riedel-Hiermaier-Thoma (RHT) material model to reproducethe behavior of granite under impact and explosive loading conditions. The study concluded that the materialmodel captured the phenomenon of compressional damage in granite due to such loading conditionsfairly well. The present work uses hydrodynamic modeling with the calibrated RHT model to estimate thefines generated around a blasthole. This can improve the calibration of different size-distribution empiricalmodels and enhance the prediction of fines."

The South African gold mining industry fires approximately 800 000 sloping blastholes daily. A programme aimed at characterizing the stope blasting process is underway in order to identify areas for improvement and to provide blasting related information for the design of mechanized sloping systems.

Shallow buried explosives pose a significant threat to lightweight vehicles and their onboard personnel. To date, designers of lightweight vehicles are limited in their knowledge of what occurs during the blast. The high intensity, short term loading imparted by the explosion is enormously complex and can be significantly affected by a number of parameters including the size, shape, type, detonation point and depth of burial (DOB) of the explosive and the type, density and water content of the soil. Recent advancements in numerical simulations have enabled the complex blast event to be accurately modeled by coupling Eulerian and Lagrangian analyses: the former is well suited to modeling the blast and while the latter, the structural response. Further validation of the modeling technique is considered in the current paper, which details simulations performed utilizing the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian analysis to the study the blast output of explosives buried in saturated sand. These experiments varied explosive charge size, its depth of burial, the target stand-off (SO) distance and target plate dimension. The investigation concludes with a discussion of the accuracy of the numerical simulations when compared with the experimental observations.

In this paper, the authors describe major changes in drilling and blasting methods instituted at the Zortman And Landusky Mining Company Properties to maintain the viability of these north central Montana surface mines in the present period of depressed precious metal prices. The authors explain how improved drilling procedures minimized problems due to uneven benches and floors. They also describe changes in explosives loading and delay blasting techniques which improved fragmentation, thus increasing metal recovery from heap leaching. Quantities were increased substantially and a new bulk explosives loading system was placed in service with a special down-the-hole bulk loading truck and storage facilities for bulk ANFO and bulk emulsion. At the same time, drill patterns were expanded by nearly 40%. The authors also describe a new technique of using explosives to selectively cast waste and ore in different directions so as to reduce the cost of separating the ore.

The St. Lawrence Seaway's Welland Canal has been undergoing a rehabilitation program that requires the removal of deteriorated concrete from the 25 meter high lock walls. Multi million dollar contracts must be completed during the three month winter freeze up. New blast designs have drastically cut the time required for concrete demolition. All blast results including vibration, noise, underbreak, overbreak, scaling and flyrock have been improved and at a lower cost.

There is general agreement that the type of explosive has considerable effect on Important blasting results such as the degree of rock fragmentation, the intensity of damage to surrounding rock, and the success of break-out at the toe of the hole.

We will discuss the kind of procedure that we use to predict the no-fire (for safety) and all-fire (for reliability) current levels for any given type electric detonator. The basic idea is to expose several detonators to different levels of electric current, so we can estimate the probability of firing as a function of current. We call this a statistical firing test. But what about the uncertainty in measuring the current? Suppose we are not quite sure what stimulus level we apply? This is the question that we will consider here. This relates to both safety and reliability. Surprisingly enough, we will find that some uncertainty in measuring the levels during our statistical firing test improves our long-term safety and reliability

The thrust of this report is to overcome some of the technical deficiency in the scientific methodology that correlates the work output during a charge explosion to the resulting toxic fumes. Thermodynamic work-principle models yield (undissipated) shock and heave results for shooting underwater and in rock stratum with related toxic fumes. Underwater circumstances yield reliable test data for the work process, though questionable or no fume results. Work-output measurements in rock shots remain difficult if not intractable, though some fume reports exist. Underground tests with thick-wall metal pipe bombs yield consistent toxic fumes trapped within the test chamber. The work output, rendered as fragment kinetic energy, can be inferred from the well-tested theory of R. W. Gurney, originally designed for military ordinance. Therefore a work-principle model for cylindrical pipe bombs was developed to predict fragmentation work output and reaction-zone fumes, permitting the double comparisons to reported and inferred results.

The underwater detonation test method has been long recognized as a useful tool for the evaluation of the energy release and relative effectiveness of commercial explosives. In this study, underwater energy tests were performed for emulsion and watergel commercial explosives in comparison with ANFO. Heavy ANFO type blends based on emulsions and watergels were also investigated under and without confinement.

If dynamite is used in hot metal mines, it may be subject to decomposition, and the increase in nitroglycol vapour under the high temperatures causes bad headaches of workers. Also the explosives containing ammonium nitrate are very dangerous when mixed with sulfide ores at a high temperature!. Therefore we developed a heat-resistant water gel explosive which is safe to be handled at these hot metal mines.

Ground vibrations generated by mine blasting must be controlled to comply with legislation and to protect sensitive local or site infrastructure. The consequences of exceeding imposed limits can range from negative publicity to structural damage to infrastructure. It is imperative that vibrations are controlled without compromising fragmentation and delivery of blasted inventory. General practice is to reduce the charge weight and the blast size as blasting approaches the sensitive structures; however such an approach results in blasting smaller volumes more frequently which places greater pressure on production to meet their targets.

Reactive ground is ground that undergoes a spontaneous exothermic reaction after it comes into contact with nitrates. This is commonly caused by inert rock hosting sulphide minerals, such as pyrites that act as the reagent. The presence and subsequent rate of reaction with nitrate based bulk explosives can be difficult to predict. Once identified, only explosives that are tested and proven to be compatible with the reactive ground may only be used. These typically take the form of inhibited ammonium nitrate emulsion blended with a limited volume of ANFO or porous prilled ammonium nitrate (PPAN) to ensure that all AN prills in the blend are wholly encapsulated and thus protected from the reactive ground. The requirement for high emulsion content bulk products limits the suite of products available for use to high energy, and high expense products. Further, if chemically sensitised products are used, charged holes must be left unstemmed to allow for gassing to occur, adding delay and exposing the blast crew to an unconfined charge in reactive ground. A range of inhibited products has been developed that are solid sensitised and can be bulked to as low as 0.9 g/cc (56.2 lb/ft3). The use of a solid sensitiser enables stemming to occur immediately after each hole is charged, confining any unplanned detonation more safely within the rock mass. The effective and precise manufacture of bulked inhibited products required a new and innovative Mobile Processing Unit (MPU) design. This MPU required the ability to blend two solid raw materials (AN prill & sensitiser) along with two liquid ingredients (AN emulsion and process fuel). This MPU has been designed, manufactured and has used successfully to manufacture low density inhibited explosives. This paper presents an innovative shift in inhibited bulk products with specific reference to their manufacture and application.

As we begin the pre-blast survey we need to decide on the number of holes needed for production and a detailed highwall inspection. The survey consists of checking the highwall and placement of barrier cones. At the Elmhurst Chicago Stone Company, Barbers Corner Plant, we use 18-24" orange highway type safety cones. These cones are easily noticed because of their high visibility color in all weather conditions and are placed approximately 20-25 feet from the face and approximately 50 feet apart along the highwall, then the area is checked for back break, under cut, over hang, surface filled area and clay area. This deposit is unique because of the number of clay filled areas and slip seams that meanders through the deposit plus a fault that runs North-Northwest and South-Southeast. This particular limestone deposit is overlaid with glacial sand and gravel and the top weathered stone wanders plus or minus 10 feet in 1400 feet.

ANFO, as a blasting agent, is used in large quantities in coal surface mines. It can be purchased on the open market or through reliable suppliers. The blaster in the field must assume that his ANFO is homogeneous, consistent, and nearly identical on a daily basis. A quality control program will enable him to be assured of the correct product. Therefore, the material cost and operational efficiency can be better controlled.

The need to adequately quantify cracking in structures in the vicinity of blasting activity becomes more important each year. This urgency comes about through a growing number of complaints and lawsuits between the various parties involved, i.e., operator/owner, government, and complaintant. It is felt that existing rules and regulations (mainly based on peak particle velocity of the soil or rock adjacent to the structure in question) fall short of such quantification and lead to confusion in adequately assessing structural damage.
