Among the various theories proposed to account for the spontaneous ignjtion of coal, one which has at times been very strongly held is that the initial heating is due to the oxidation of iron pyrites. From the results described in this paper, it is possible to calculate roughly the rate of spontaneous heating of a specimen of finely-divided pyrites, on the assumption that all the heat developed is used in raising the temperature of the pyrites, and that none is lost. It is clear that where finely-divided pyrites occurs in considerable proportion among coal, it may be the chief factor in originating combustion, but that pyrites can only be the cause of a heating when it is present in considerable proportion, and in a very finely-divided state

Measurements have been made of the activity of 'FeO' in 'Fe0'-Mn0-Ti02 melts at 1475 degrees C. The results obtained are discussed in terms of ideal mixing of titanates and in terms of a regular solution model. On the basis of the regular solution model activities of Ti02 and MnO in the Fe0-Mn0-Ti02 and Mn0-Ti02 systems have been derived. The data have been shown to be consistent with the liquidus lines in the phase systems. Examples are given of the application of the data to slag-metal equilibria, being used to derive slag-metal data between liquid iron and Fe0-Mn0-Ti02 slags

Trackless battery powered haulage vehicles have been in operation in British coal mines principally for longwall face transfer and personnel transportation. Changes within the industry have resulted in the introduction of room and pillar coal mining methods and the introduction of increasingly heavier longwall roof supports This has resulted in the introduction of: • Battery powered coal haulage machines, which, without the need for trailing cables, increase productivity within room and pillar mining. • Battery powered longwall shield haulers which are capable of carry ing the heaviest shield supports currently being utilised within the British coal mining industry. The conventional machines have been adapted from an American design to meet the requirem ents of European legalisation. This has seen the- emphasis being placed upon the supplier with the European M achinery Directive being introduced, necessitating the assigning of a 'C E ' m ark to each vehicle. Battery vehicle technology has advanced to meet the demands of the ever changing market and will no doubt he further adapted to meet the requirement of the British coal mining industry.

Strong disagreement is registered by A.A. Rocha Gomes with Leca's account of the discovery published in Trans. IMM B, vol.99, 1990, p.B139-B152, which he contends minimises the role of the Portuguese state organisation Servico de Fomento Mineriro (SFM); the author, in response, once again thanks all SFM staff but reiterates his conclusion that Neves-Corvo was discovered through an amalgamation of exploration results and interpretations from different sub-disciplines and geoscientists

In northern Vietnam Ni-Cu sulphide deposits associated with ultramafic rocks are located in several continental rift zones of Permo-Triassic age. In recent years a number of ultramafic bodies have also been discovered in southern Vietnam, but detailed work on sulphide occurrences within these bodies has still to be undertaken. A brief description is given of some N i-C u sulphide deposits that are located in the northern part of the country. Of the depos­ its that have been examined in any detail, those in the Takhoa region are of the greatest economic interest. Ni and Ni-Cu sulphide bodies have, however, also been found in association with the ultramafic rocks.

The philosophy and detail of mill design in developing countries, where it is frequently difficult to obtain experienced, qualified supervision to operate the plant, are discussed. The resulting design suggests the desirability of simple units, with maximum visibility of equipment operation and material movement, which allow the minimal technical supervision to see the plant conditions prevailing. Information on plant conditions during periods of lesser supervision can be provided by the use of simple, low-maintenance recorders. Where the mill is intended for operation in a developing country, it is insufficient for the flowsheets and plant layouts merely to be drawn: the process metallurgist must pay meticulous attention to details that could ordinarily be left to the design detailing group. The design of this type of mill requires a knowledge of human engineering—of the type of individual who will operate and supervise the plant; probable changes in personnel should be taken into account. Details are suggested for coarse-ore handling, screens, feeders, secondary and tertiary crushers, conveyors, dust collecting, fine-ore feeding, grinding mills, conditioners, flotation, thickeners, filters, reagent systems, sand pumping, sampling, instrumentation, safety and construction

Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). Evidence is accumulating that reconnaissance-level biogeochemical sampling can provide valuable insight into the chemistry of the substrate. Problems such as seasonal variations in plant chemistry and the lack of a universal biogeochemical sample medium may be circumvented by adopting normalising procedures. The planet can be divided into a few climatic zones, each of which is characterised by one or two common plant genera. If it can be demonstrated that the chemical differences between certain species of a single genus are small - as is suggested by studies of boreal forests - it would seem feasible to apply biogeochemistry as a low-density geochemical mapping tool. The technique could prove particularly useful for assessing the substrate chemistry of areas of dense forest, rugged terrain and difficult access by employing airborne sampling of trees from helicopters

Two of the most important economies in coal-washing are in the actual washing of the coal and in a proper lay-out to reduce to a minimum the cost of labour for handling and washing. A guarantee is usually required for turning out a washed coal containing not more than 2% of free dirt and a resulting refuse with not more than 2% of free coal; any plant that gives results within such guarantees can he considered economical, provided that there are no other losses during the washing process. Various drainage arrangements and washery lay-outs are illustrated and discussed with respect to drainage, bunkers, sieves, settling tanks and conveyors and two further points considered: siding accommodation, which may become quite important with washeries of large capacity especially when the coal is brought in railway-wagons; and the irregularity with which the coal arrives. This paper presents costs for a coal log pipeline that can transport coal over distances from 50 km to 1500 km. The coal log pipeline (CLP) concept is a new technology in w hich coal is compacted into water impermeable circular cylinders that can be suspended in water flowing through an underground pipe. CLP includes processes to prepare the run-of-mine coal for compaction, the injection of coal logs into a pressurised water-lilled pipeline, the conveyance of the coal through a pipe including special pumping stations, and the treatment of the coal logs and water at the pipeline outlet. An 8 inch (203 mm) pipeline can transport more than 2 Ml of coal per year. CLP components have been extensively tested in bench-scale facilities where these tests have included start up/shutdown steady state flow behaviour, end of pipeline treatment of water and coal log handling, water hammer effects, abrasion of logs and pipeline, coal log manufacture, and other engineering operations. Several sites are being considered in the United States (US) for the first commercial demonstration that will probably take place in 1998. The cost calculations are based on realistic values for all the components of a CLP. including a return on investment. For pipelines of different diameter, values for coal transportation are presented in terms of $(USVtonne as a function of distance.

Induced polarisation (IP) surveys are commonly used in uranium exploration programmes in India. The IP method is effective in detecting the disseminated metallic sulphides that are often associated with uranium minerals. However, conductive and polarisable host rock or overburden often introduces inductive or electromagnetic (EM) coupling into time domain IP measurements. This makes it difficult to distinguish between responses due to such coupling and those that might indicate economic mineralisation. Attempts must be made to remove the EM effects before the IP technique is used in drilling programmes. Transient decay curves which were recorded during field surveys at Pisnari were factorised using the Marquardt algorithm. Dispersion plots of the amplitudes and relaxation times of the composite exponential function enable a clear distinction to be made between the effects of EM coupling and those of mineralisation.
