Remediation and restoration of offshore marine habitats is a relatively new concept with attempts in European regions largely being instigated by requirements of various strategic directives including Article 2 of the Habitats Directive (1992), the EC Water Framework Directive (2000, Article 2 of the OSPAR Convention (1992) and the developing European Marine Strategy Directive. A field experiment to establish the practicality of various options for rehabilitating the seabed on the cessation of dredging has been successfully set up. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the practicality and effectiveness of gravel seeding as a potential restorative method that can be applied at marine aggregate extraction sites following cessation of dredging. Zone 2, within Area 408 (offshore Humber) was chosen as the experimental site as there is some evidence for persistence of sand which may have resulted from screening operations at this site.

The Chavara and Manavalakurichi placer deposits have been known since a long time for their rich reserves of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, monazite etc. While detailed work has been conducted on the mineralogy and texture of the bulk placer sediments, reports on the detailed investigations on individual minerals are relatively scanty. Though, limited work pertaining to the chemistry of ilmenite has been carried out by Nair et al (1995) and Ramakrishnan et al (1997), a comprehensive study of the weathering patterns of ilmenite along the longitudinal and vertical profiles has not been, so far, undertaken. Data on the microscopic analysis of ilmenite from the southwest placers, too, is sketchy. The present work deals with the variation of the weathering undergone by ilmenite in the southwest placer deposits based on chemical and mineralogical analyses.

Herein, concept designs of two different types of mining robots are concerned, which are aimed for developments of deep seabed mineral resources: polymetallic nodules (PMN) and seabed massive sulfides (SMS), respectively. Continuous mining concepts are presented based on technical and environmental feasibility, where the environmental and functional differences for commercial productions are investigated. Needs and roles of versatile mining robots are explained as a key of continuous mining system. The functional requirements and design characteristics of mining robots to satisfy the top requirements from customers are described comparatively. Schemes of axiomatic design and quality function deployment (QFD) are utilized: functional requirements (FR) are defined, technical requirements (TR) are figured out, design parameters (DP) are derived, and degrees of importance of design parameters are evaluated. Analogy and discrepancy in remote operation methods are put side by side. A pilot scale mining robot for PMN and a commercial scale one for SMS are suggested in form of concept designs. PMN mining robot is shaped as a multiple configuration of unit robot modules in side dimension, in which the unit robot module consists of two tracks and two pick-up modules. SMS mining robot is based on a four-tracked vehicle. Main platform is mounted on the vehicle through turn-table. Excavation device consists of two-articulated boom and cutter tool. Crushing-and-pumping units are placed same in both robot platforms.

The study of Co-rich manganese crusts has reached the level which allows to start prospecting works in the observable future, and furthermore, probably, exploitation of ore deposits. In this connection, among other goals, the necessity to analyze a distribution of ore bed parameters in details is quite urgent. Foremost, these are crust thicknesses in connection with landforms and elements of submarine mountains relief. This report is based on representative sampling made in course of research cruises run by SSC Yuzhmorgeologiya over guyots of the Magellan Seamounts. Crustal covers could overlie seafloor surfaces which are confined to a various landforms and elements of relief under the condition, that they are free of sediments. These are planed parts of a summit surfaces, edges, spurs, rectilinear parts of slopes, intermountain saddles and volcanic edifices. It is known, that crustal thicknesses are different at a various forms of relief [1]. We processed statistically the data around crustal thicknesses, which were sampled by dredging and submersible drilling (Tables 1, 2).

The National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), Marine Geology and Geophysics Division and co-located World Data Center-A for MGG archives and distributes global marine sediment data from U.S. and international sources. NGDC is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service. NGDC offers a variety of digital marine sediment data sets including sediment descriptions, textural analyses, geochemistry, paleontology, paleomagnetism, and well logs. Some data sets are compiled by outside sources and sent to NGDC for distribution; many are received under exchange agreements and through the World Data Center system. Other data sets are compiled at NGDC, frequently in cooperation with other government agencies or academic institutions. One of the best examples of the latter is the Index to Marine Geological Samples, or "Core Curators' Database".

Column flotation is a promising technique for processing as-mined, cobalt-rich, ferromanganese crust to separate the valuable crust component from barren substrate-rock, either aboard ship or within the water column. Column flotation testing was carried out in a seawater medium using samples obtained from the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the mid-Pacific Ocean near Johnston Atoll. The collector reagent was a mixture of diesel fuel, fatty acid, and sulfonate previously developed at the U.S. Bureau of Mines for crust flotation using conventional flotation cells. Results are dependent upon particle size and reagent dosage, especially *as these factors affect froth volume and stability. Column flotation results are compared with previous studies in conventional cells. An overview of how column flotation might be applied in an offshore mining and processing system is given.

The United Kingdom marine aggregate mining industry is the second largest of its kind after Japan. Materials for the construction industry, sea defences and for many other purposes are exploited from shelf waters at depths of 30-50 metres by self-contained suction dredgers which often screen material to obtain a cargo of a particular quality. Assessment of the environmental impact of such mining activities both within the boundaries of the dredged areas, and in the zone of deposition of outwash from the dredger has in the past been mainly based on predictive models based on the settlement rates of the individual particles and assumed Gaussian diffusion principles during the settlement phase. Recent studies which we have made on both the mass balance for materials rejected during the dredging process and direct measurements of the settlement of material in the dispersing plume suggest that the zone of settlement is much less than that predicted from diffusion models. Instead of a downstream settlement plume of 10-20 km in the tidal currents of U.K waters, our measurements show that inorganic components of the dredger plume reach background levels in the water column within 880 metres.

Alaska's expansive continental shelf represents future opportunities for marine mineral development. Although today's metal prices and subsidized foreign mineral production continue to discourage industry investment in marine exploration worldwide, the longer term outlook is one of increasing costs on-shore with a dwindling land-base available on which to search for and extract minerals. Likely, the generations of the 21st century will increasingly recover their minerals from the sea-floor. Though largely unexplored, Alaska potentially represents a major port ion of the U.S. marine resources. Several factors demonstrate this. First, the Alaskan OCS is huge; 74% of the entire United States' continental shelf lies off of Alaska, and 54% of the U.S. coastline is Alaskan. Combined with the jurisdiction waters of the Soviet Far East, the Bering-Chukchi shelf is one of the world's largest tracts of shallow water. Second, Alaska is situated at the northwestern terminus of the mineral-rich American cordillera. From Chile to Alaska, major on-shore deposits of precious and base metals, ferroalloys, and industrial minerals are found in the tectonically disturbed belts of the cordillera. In 1988, the western U.S. cordilleran states produced 70% of this country's mineral output (excluding construction materials). Throughout the cordillera's entire 10,000 mile length, the rock units strike largely parallel to the coastline, but in Alaska they extend directly offshore and onto the continental shelf. Compared with land mineral resources investigation, as well known, it is more important for marine geologists to get image data (e.g. photographs, video tapes and various charts) because they are often hard to reach deep seabed directly. In the past years a plenty of image data which are in various forms have been accumulated. In contrast with both digital and character data managing the image data by using database is just unfolding and it will be a trend for marine mineral resources investigation. GIS (Geography Information System) offers another useful means of processing image data, especially geological data. GIS is characterized by processing vector data (e.g. point, line and polygon), but newer versions of GIS software package are also able to process raster data (e.g. photographs etc.). The present author made a presentation on marine mineral image database during 25th UMI, but that system runs under DOS environment and dealt with only mineralogy. Recently a new system which integrates Oracle image database with GIS (ArcView version 3.1) has been developed. This system runs under Windows NT environment. In the network environment Server/Client mode is adopted, and over 200 basic subdatabases (tables)are located on Server; operating interfaces are located on several clients so that several persons can operate the system simultaneously. The whole system involves five types of marine mineral resources: manganese nodules, cobalt-rich crusts, polymetallic sulfides, phosphorites and gas hydrates. The data of every type of marine mineral resources described above are distributed among five units and several blocks. The units and blocks are described below:

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), over the past three decades, has carried out a spectrum of geologic surveys and research in marine areas of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around the U.S. and its territories as well as in the Great Lakes region. Regional and topical studies have been undertaken throughout the range of marine environments: estuarine, tidal wetlands, coastal and nearshore, shelf, slope, and the deep ocean basins. The Survey's coastal and marine research programs consist of four elements shown in Table 1. The first includes studies using interpretations of bathymetry, seismic-reflection and sidescan sonar data, and analyses of sediment grab samples and cores to develop an understanding of the geologic framework. Information on the geologic setting, including the subbottom structure and stratigraphic relationships, and the geologic history and evolution of the areas surveyed are important parts of the program objectives.

Studies of benthic recolonization in the aftermath of marine aggregate dredging in the U.K. and elsewhere are limited and are largely confined to experimental circumstances. Investigations of the physical and biological status of licensed extraction sites in the U.K. at various times following cessation of commercial dredging are very limited, and so judgments as to the likely progress towards environmental restoration and the time-scales involved continue to be based on predictions rather than real data. This field-based research programme was commissioned to enhance the understanding of processes leading to physical and biological recovery of the seabed following dredging, thereby aiding the identification of practices to minimize environmental harm at licensed sites, and to promote rehabilitation on cessation. The outcome of survey work will have the notable benefit of allowing questions about the present status of locations hitherto subject to commercial exploitation to be answered directly, rather than by inference.

Activities of Brazil in relation to deep seabed mineral resources development are carried out in the framework of two main national programmes. They are: (1) the Program for the Assessment of Mineral Resources of the Brazilian Continental Shelf (REMPLAC) and (2) the Programme for Prospecting and Exploration of Mineral Resources of the Area in the South Equatorial and Atlantic Ocean (PROAREA). REMPLAC aim to research and increase knowledge of the seabed and sub-soil, as well as to collect the necessary information to allow integrated management of the Brazilian Continental Shelf. Among the various research projects undertaken or planned on the framework of REMPLAC are: geology of the Brazilian continental shelf and adjacent ocean areas, organized in geological information system; digital bathymetric charts of the inner continental shelf at 1:100,000 scale; systematic research for sands, gravels, carbonates; placers, phosphorites, coal, cobalt-rich crusts, polymetallic sulphides and Gas hydrates. The PROAREA was prepared with three initial projects starting in 2010. One of them, the Project Geology of the South Atlantic and Equatorial organized in a Geographic Information System, aims to collect, collate, integrate and make available in a single environment all geo-referenced data and information available in Brazil and abroad on geology and mineral resources of the South Atlantic Ocean. The other two projects are for the research of cobalt-rich crust and polimetallic sulphides. These programme are developed with the participation of various segments of government agencies, research institutions and public enterprises. Marine scientific research and other activities from REMPLAC and PROAREA are carried out in partnership between the Geological Survey of Brazil, national research institutions from several Brazilian universities and the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation from the Brazilian Navy.

The Cook Islands are 15 islands located in the Southwest Pacific (between 8-23°S latitude and 156-167°W longitude). The total land area is about 200 km2. However, because its islands are widely scattered, the EEZ of the Cooks encompass an area about 2 million km2. The Cook Islands government exercises sovereignty and jurisdiction over its EEZ according to international law and convention as a member state under UNCLOS1. Accordingly, the Cook Islands government exercises full control over resources in its EEZ, including minerals on the seabed. Decision making on allocating licences for exploration and ultimate mineral recovery is by the Cook Islands government and will be set out in relevant statutes. Seabed minerals investigations within the EEZ of the Cook Islands and adjacent waters were first carried out by, USSR, US, and New Zealand research vessels in the late 1960 early 1970?s and indicated the presence of high concentrations of manganese nodules. Previously, the financial and technological implications of deep sea mining outweighed the benefits of access to the mineral rich deposits identified all around the world. The process of marine diamond mining off the west coast of southern Africa started in the late 1950s, and subsequently continued by De Beers to the present day, has proven to be an excellent proving ground for the development of technology and mining systems that ensure a sustainable and financially viable business.

This project funded by Government of Flanders (Belgium) and coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission proposes to draw recommendations for conservation of the biodiversity and for minimizing the impact of future nodule mining from the description of the referential state of suprabenthic megafaunal assemblages within a nodule ecosystem in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCFZ). The description of this specific ecosystem is based on the analysis of about 200 000 photographs and some 55 hours of film collected by French and American exploratory cruises. The video and hotographic sampling has been achieved by means of different towed and remote control devices designed for Ifremer and NOAA including the manned submersible “the Nautile.”

Volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits are generally considered to have been formed by hydrothermal fluids that leach ore metals out of footwall rocks. However, the necessity for a metal-rich magmatic component in the ore-forming fluid of "giant" ore deposits has been debated over the decades. The solution to this issue is important not only for metallogenic models but also for the mineral exploration. In the hydrothermal leaching model, massive sulfides at mid-ocean ridges are deposited from hydrothermal fluids containing 80 ppm Fe, 6 ppm Zn, 2 ppm Cu, 350oC, and 0.7 g/cm3 density (average data for 21oN East Pacific Rise). A simple calculation demonstrates that such a dilute fluid is unlikely to have been responsible for the formation of the largest ancient massive sulfide ores of greater than 100x106 tonnes, such as Kidd Creek, Brunswick No. 12, Neves Corvo, and Rio Tinto. For such a deposit consisting primarily of pyrite, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite (other minerals, including gangue, might account for an additional 10-20%) and even assuming 100% precipitation and retention of the sulfides, more than 790 km3 of vent fluid would be required. For typical water-rock reaction ratios of about 2, this fluid would have to have reacted with about 395 km3 of rock to acquire its metals by conventional leaching processes. This estimate, however, conflicts with the observation that even a giant massive sulfide ore body is usually underlain only by a few cube kilometers of obviously altered rocks. Moreover, this model is not consistent with the observation of hanging wall alteration in many large massive sulfide deposits. The close spatial association between massive sulfides and volcanic rocks, in both ancient and modern sea floors, suggests that direct magmatic contribution should be taken into account in the genetic model. Magmatic fluids, capable of carrying abundant ore metals and volatiles and escaping from magma by depressurization, are well known from modern active volcanoes on land. High concentrations of metals occur in CO2-rich magmatic fluid trapped in felsic volcanic rocks nearby large presently-forming VMS deposits in the eastern Manus Basin (Pacmanus, Suzette) and also in the footwall rocks of Ordovician giant Brunswick #12 deposit in the Bathurst district, New Brunswick. Only 1% of such metal-rich magmatic fluid mixed with heated sea water, that has leached its metals from rocks, would contribute 85% of the total metals to form an orebody. Such magmatic fluids are most likely to be formed from volatile-rich felsic magmas that are prevalent in back arcs, and, if added to the normal circulation system, the fluids could be responsible for the formation of "giant" ore deposits. If this is true, then the study of magmatic fluids in the seafloor volcanic rocks may provide criteria for the exploration of large ore deposits.

The Marine Minerals Technology Center (MMTC) was established by Congress in FY 1988 as part of the Mineral Institutes Program, administered by the U.S. Bureau of Mines under the auspices of the Department of the Interior. The primary objective of the MMTC is to encourage the development of selected mineral materials from U.S. seabeds by providing opportunities for appropriate engineering systems research, development, and technology transfer within academic, government, and industrial communities. The center will also provide the leadership and facilities required for the education and training of the nation's scientists and engineers in the field of ocean mineral development. Because of the broad spectrum of study encompassed by the field of ocean mining and mineral resources, the MMTC is organized to include separate divisions for nearshore and deep ocean research. The Continental Shelf Division is administered by The Mississippi Mineral Resources Institute (MMRI) of the School of Engineering at The university of Mississippi. This study examines the possible relationships between compositional variability in non-hydrothermal manganese nodules and large-scale environmental parameters. In the central SW Pacific (145-180° W and 20-O° S) the level of primary productivity, the rates and proportions of carbonate, silica and organic matter supply to the sediments, and the position of the seafloor relative to the Calcium Carbonate Compensation Depth (CCD) appear to directly influence nodule composition. Four zones of nodule composition are apparent. These zones correlate fairly well with the level of primary productivity in surface waters, as estimated by satellite-based measurement of chlorophyll content. The observed correlations between surface productivity and nodule composition are consistent with the contention that the dominant source of several transition metals in these deposits (i.e , Mn, Ni, Cu. and Zn) is provided by removal of fine-grained particulate matter from the water column by biological means. Subsequent decay of organic matter in sediments augments the content of these metals in the nodules through oxic and sub-oxic diagenesis. The opposite behavior of Fe and Co content may in part result from mineralogical and dilution effects.

Analysis of ground and airborne radiometric measurements in the Saquarema region (Rio de Janeiro) provides new insights into the breakdown and transport of mineral aggregates containing monazites, under sub-tropical weathering conditions. The breakdown process, accompanied by loss of low-density clay fractions in weathered materials is considered responsible for the observed patterns in relative enrichment of thorium and uranium along the migration paths of radionuclides. The characteristic features of these patterns provide clues as to the time and distance scales associated with processes of weathering and erosion. It is also possible to determine approximate locations of concentrations of accessory minerals. In this context, we advance the hypothesis that large under-water monazite deposits may be present along the offshore sand banks, in the coastal region of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
