El deposito aurífero La Libertad es la mayor operación minera en toda Nicaragua. Adquirida por la compañía B2Gold Corp., en marzo del año 2009, ha producido para la misma un total de 811,000 onzas de Au a una ley promedio de 1,86 g/t Au y cuenta actualmente con un total de 213,000 onzas de Au en reservas probadas y probables, 415,000 onzas de Au en recursos medidos e indicados, y 436,000 onzas de Au en recursos inferidos.

Newmont Mining Corporation opera la Mina Yanacocha en Perú, una de sus facilidades es la planta de molienda llamada Gold Mill (GM), en ella se procesan minerales oxidados con altos contenidos de oro principalmente, sin embargo desde el año 2015 esta planta viene procesando minerales sulfurados con contenidos de oro y cobre. Desde el año 2009 Yanacocha ha almacenado millones de toneladas de minerales con altos contenidos de oro y cobre en sulfuros para ser procesados en el futuro. Estos minerales son llamados minerales “transicionales” y “deep transicionales” dependiendo de las cantidades de cobre y azufre como sulfuro para ser clasificados en una u otra categoría.

El presente trabajo señala a través de las pruebas de laboratorio el proceso de electroobtención de cobre mediante el uso la electrodiálisis reactiva (EDR), utilizando soluciones acuosas de ácido sulfúrico con sulfato ferroso (anolito) y con sulfato de cobre (catolito), y considerando una reutilización del sulfato férrico generado por la lixiviación de viruta de cobre o a través de a formación de sulfatos de hierro cristalizados.

The present project sought alternatives for this material through the Mining Lab Beginnings program, which was developed by Nexa in partnership with Escalab to find solutions for the company's highly complex challenges. Through the program, several solutions were evaluated, with additives for the construction market being the most prominent. Tests were conducted to confirm the efficiency of jarosite in the mixture that composes this material. With successful laboratory tests, the technology was tested on an industrial scale, where it also demonstrated its technical and economic viability. The project is now moving into the operational phase, demonstrating that circular economy is the best solution for disposed tailings.

En el presente trabajo se propone una ecuación para estimar dicho esfuerzo en base a la concentración volumétrica del relave, basado en ensayos desarrollados en el Laboratorio Nacional de Hidráulica con muestras de dos depósitos de relaves de distintas minas polimetálicas y en estudios realizados por O’Brien y Julien (1988) con materiales granulares. La ecuación propuesta permitirá optimizar el diseño de sistemas de conducción de relaves y reducir costos de mantenimiento.

The nature of the gold-bearing fluid and the source of gold in sedimentary-hosted gold deposits of Carlin, orogenic or epithermal types is still matter of debate. Most authors point to magmatic/ metamorphic origin for the fluids, however, the properties of such fluids and their interactions with organic carbon – a common component in this type of deposits – are not sufficiently well known. Here we present a large set of novel geochemical, mineralogical and fluid-inclusion data obtained from the Algamarca Au-Ag-Cu epithermal veins, corresponding to lateral manifestation of the neighbouring sedimentary-hosted epithermal-gold deposit at Shahuindo.

Borehole geophysical logging has developed and improved many measurements for mining exploration in the past decade. Imaging tools such as the acoustic and optical televiewer are now being used to collect real time, high resolution, oriented fracture and bedding data. Drill holes 100’s of meters deep can be processed very quickly using automated structure picking software and borehole core samples can be digitally logged instead of using paper and pencil.

The present study demonstrates the feasibility of the ultrafine grinding and atmospheric leaching process applied to refractory gold concentrates from Salave Project located in northern Spain. At bench scale, it was found acceptable sulfide oxidation was about 84-85% and CIL gold recoveries between 95-96% applying specific energy consumption between 30 and 60 kWh/t during ultrafine grinding. The atmospheric oxidation of the sulfide concentrate was controlled between pH 4.4 and 4.8 with a mixture 90/10 of CaCO3/NaCO3 with residence time of 48 hours for the atmospheric oxidation and 30 hours residence time for the CIL process.

Facing the rapid proliferation of informal artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in the 2000s, states with commodity-dependent economies pursued different strategies to enforce regulations to the activity. This article assesses the effectiveness of these strategies in increasing compliance. We leverage a view of policy effectiveness that considers the type of state-society relations a policy foster. We look at how different state-society relations impact the relevance a policy has to the subject it attempts to regulate. We argue that cooperation helps the state overcome its limitations on the knowledge of ASM and its limited institutional powers to enforce regulations alone. By learning about the activity in question and developing ties with the informal miners, the state can produce feasible regulation that is more likely to be followed.

The overall slope angle (OSA) of pit walls plays a crucial role in the financial return of open pit mines. The work showcases a novel design methodology where non-planar geotechnically optimal pit walls with an OSA steeper than what is used in current design practices are employed without compromising mine safety, i.e. the optimal profiles are featured by the same Factor of Safety (FoS) than their traditional design counterparts. In the current design practice, pit wall profiles are often designed to be planar in cross-section and the profile in between ramps especially tend to be defined by a constant inter-ramp angle.

Waelz process is a method applied in the zinc oxide production and is one of the largest sources of carbon emissions within the zinc industry. The solid carbon used for heating and for reduction reactions is provided mainly by the coke fed with the EAFD in the Waelz kiln. Both chemical composition and physical properties of the coke are important to transportation and to the process. Decarbonizing the Waelz process by replacing the traditional fuel source using alternative biogenic fuel, for example, offers a potential solution to reduce the carbon footprint, which is aligned with the ESG perspective.

The AntaKori Project, located in the Hualgayoc mining district, has a NI 43-101 compliant inferred sulphide mineral resource of 295 Mt @ 0.36 g/t Au, 0.48 % Cu and 10 g/t Ag (Wilson, 2012) which is still open in all directions. It is a calcic copper-gold-silver skarn. Mineralization is principally hosted in prograde and retrograde exoskarn in the Cretaceous Chulec and Inca Formations, as well as in quartzites and arkosic sandstones/siltstones of the underlying Farrat Formation. Additional mineralization is hosted by early porphyry intrusions, which are weakly mineralized, as well as locally well-mineralized phases of breccia. The porphyry system responsible for skarn-style mineralization has not been discovered yet.

The paper point out that the carbonate Carbonate Replacement Deposits (CRDs) are epigenetic, intrusion-related, high-temperature sulfide-dominant Pb-Zn-Ag-Cu-Au-rich deposits that typically form lenses or elongate to elongate-tabular bodies referred to as mantos or chimneys. Recent studies have shown that CRDs do occur in predictable geologic environments, allowing focusing of regional exploration. In addition, they have mappable alteration patterns that can be used to determine the magnitude of a given system and elemental zoning patterns that greatly enhance the chances of drilling success. Several recent discoveries of “blind” replacement deposits have been made by careful field evaluation of host and capping rocks coupled with geophysics.

One of the important decisions in the development of new mining concentrator projects is the electric power supply for the project. Key decision factors often include the production of power on site versus purchase of power from the grid, ownership of the power supply infrastructure and the choice of generation technology. In this sense, the paper introduce a methodology that will allow the evaluation of the various alternatives to supply electric power to remote mining and mineral processing sites in a consistent and equitable manner taking into account economic and technical considerations and providing the same degree of availability and reliability. The most employed evaluation method consists of carrying out trade-off studies between the various alternatives but care should be exercised so that the alternatives analyzed offer comparable operational results.

Most large skarn deposits are zoned in both space and time relative to associated intrusions, and this zonation can be used to guide exploration. Zonation occurs on scales from km to, and reflects infiltrative fluid flow, wallrock reaction, temperature variations, and fluid mixing. In most skarn systems, there is a general zonation pattern of proximal garnet, distal pyroxene, and vesuvianite (or a pyroxenoid such as wollastonite, bustamite, or rhodonite) at the marble front. In addition, individual skarn minerals may display systematic color or compositional variations within the larger zonation pattern. Such patterns are reviewed for several well-studied examples of Cu, W, Au, and Zn-Pb-Ag skarns. In addition, many deposits have endoskarn or other alteration of the associated intrusion and recrystallization or other subtle changes in the surrounding wallrocks.

As head grades of mines around the world decline, generation of tailings is increasing. Along with the increased tailings generation, reduction in water availability, and recent tailings dame failures, are causing mining companies to look at different disposal methods. One of the methods that is gaining traction is filtered tailings. Filtered Tailings currently provides the greatest water recovery and the smallest footprint among all the tailings disposal methods. This paper will present two case studies that analyze the filter and air compressor costs associated with a change in the final cake moisture target (i.e. a change from 17-wt% to 15-wt% cake moisture), for a base metal mine and gold mine.
