"IntroductionAlthough iron formations were recognized in western New Brunswick about 1820, commercial production was not achieved until 1848. The Jacksonville deposits near Wood stock were developed first, and ore was treated at a blast furnace constructed 5 km to the southeast on the Saint John River. Several charcoal burners were also constructed. Pig iron was produced sporadically until 1884, when operations were finally suspended. There was little further interest in the area until 1953, when Stratmat Ltd. initiated an ambitious exploration program. At the same time, the company carried out research on an electric-reduction process to produce metallic iron and ferromanganese. The technical feasibility of this process (Udy process) was confirmed, however the high energy costs were prohibitive and work ceased in 1957. Some metallurgical research was carried out by Mandate Refining Ltd. about 1970 and more recently by the New Brunswick Research and Productivity Council.The Years Prior to 1848New Brunswick became a separate province in 1784, shortly after the influx of a large number of Loyalists from the United States. Man y of these people sett led along the Saint John River, including the area of excellent farmland near the present town of Woodstock.There were indication s that some of these earl y settlers recognized iron formations in the vicinity of Woodstock about 1820, however the nature of the deposits was not known until 836 when Dr. C.T. Jackson, a geologist commissioned by the Stat e of Maine, investigated the mineral potential of the area. Jackson (1836) described the ""ore"" as compact red hematite yielding 44 per cent pure metallic iron, and suggested that sizable tonnages may be present. It was about this time that an extensive limonite deposit was found in north-central Maine, near Mt. Katahdin. Other iron deposits were found in the Nictaux area of Nova Scotia, and a few years later at Londonderry."

Increasingly sophisticated rock mechanic tools are becoming more and more available for today?s ground control specialist. However many problems are still beyond our ability to explicitly calculate or measure. There is often a gap between the ?art? and the ?science? of rock mechanics. This paper focuses more on the ?art?, giving relatively simple examples of underground observations and micro-seismic records to help explain ground control issues. Ground support techniques such as in cycle shotcrete with high pressure water scaling, mesh and bolting, pumpable resin bolts/cablebolting, and yielding bolts with load spreading straps are discussed. The use of primary/secondary type blasthole sequences in moderate to high stress situations is also discussed with several examples of the micro-seismic response to the stoping. Relatively erratic geology with high material strength contrasts is currently being mined with blasthole methods at Nickel Rim South. Although the mine is still in its? ?early? days, over 1 million tonnes has been extracted and some empirical experience is highlighted with potential longer term issues also being discussed.

Iron removal and control in processes employing pressure leaching technologies developed at Dynatec Corporation are reviewed. Discussions are focused on recent developments in the processing of nickel-copper matte and copper concentrates, and on the Ambatovy laterite project in Madagascar. Iron control and its implications on flowsheet design in the pressure acid leaching (PAL) treatment of laterite ores and in the oxidative pressure leaching of mixed nickel-cobalt sulphide intermediates are also discussed.

This combination of natural problems and political solutions requires the development of new management mechanisms, to bridge the gaps among us, as individuals, as professions, as interest groups and so on; indeed, even as countries;• and gaps there are : about as many gaps as the people involved : many of them with new and changing expectations, often mutually exclusive and not negotiable.The challenge of these relationships and communications among so many different interests is one of the keys to effective environmental management.Like any game, this one has rules and they are new, too. "Grinding ore is an important step in the flotation process. Not only does grinding reduce particle size and liberate minerals, it also creates conditions for reactions to occur on particle surfaces that can aide or inhibit flotation. There have been numerous studies examining various grinding regiments and the effect on flotation pulp chemistry, including autogenous grinding and using media of variable composition. There have been however, few studies looking at the effect of variability in grinding media size on pulp chemistry and subsequent flotation. This study attempts to link changes in pulp chemistry in response to variations in grinding media size to flotation recovery. It uses probes mounted in the grinding chamber (pH, Eh, DO, and conductivity) to monitor pulp chemistry changes during grinding of a Cu-Zn ore. Surface chemistry analysis by ToF-SIMS was performed on sphalerite from the mill discharge. Activator and depressant species were monitored on the mineral surfaces and their presence was evaluated in the context of variability in pulp chemistry linked to differences in grinding media and its ball size.INTRODUCTIONIt has been widely recognised that not only does grinding reduce particle size and liberate minerals but the grinding environment has a large effect on the flotation of sulphide minerals. This effect is attributed to Eh change, iron hydroxide coating on surfaces, oxygen reduction, precipitation from solution and galvanic coupling (Grano, 2009). As early as 1960, it was reported that after grinding the ores in an iron mill the natural floatability of sphalerite was reduced significantly (Rey and Formanek, 1960). Kocabag and Smith (1985) studied on the industrial circuits showing that the depression of sulphides flotation in a steel mill is possibly due to the coating of iron oxidation products. Peng, Grano, Fornasiero, and Ralston (2003a, 2003b) found that iron contamination from grinding media plays a dominant role in depressing galena and chalcopyrite flotation. Huang, Grano, and Skinner (2006) reported the same observation in the flotation of arsenopyrite."

Safely and reliability of services are perhaps the two most important factors. Fibre optics is ideally suited 10 meet these stringent requirements. Aside from being an intrinsically safe, non-sparking and EMI/RFI immune medium , fibre optics offers greater reliability , higher quality of services and superior flexibility over conventional copper or radio-based communication systems.This paper wilt show how fibre optics can be applied in mining industry applications. Emerging trends and concepts will be presented to show how fibre-optic-based integrated service communication networks and local distribution systems can be implemented.IntroductionCommunication requirements in today's mine s are varied and extensive. The communication system must be rugged , safe and reliable, yet provide an ever increasing amount of high quality services. Presently, these systems are implemented using conventional copper cable. As mining method s and technology advance and the demand for better and more communication services increases, traditional systems quickly reach their limitations. It is under these circumstances that we turn to fibre optic communication systems.Fibre optics is a mature technology which is finding its way into more and more applications worldwide. A fibre optic communication system can provide a level of performance unattainable by conventional cable systems yet ca n be cost competitive. As is well known, fibre optics provides a noise-free, noise-immune, high -capacity communications channel. Glass fibre, being dielectric and non-sparking, is an intrinsically safe communications medium. Clearly, it is ideally suited to the harsh environment present in a mine.From a communication systems point-of-view, the topology of a deep mine is unique. The objective of the systems engineer is to implement a total communications capability throughout this wide spread area. Ideally all classes of services should be accessible throughout the network-an integrated network concept. Recent advances in communications technology combined with fibre optics make this realizable."

Introduction ? Today?s economic market is motivating underground mining companies to increase development advance rates and enhance their NPVs. ? For example, block cave mining involves development of kilometers of drifts with multiple pillars. ? The cyclic nature of drill and blast, and its inherent tendency to damage the surrounding excavation rock mass and increase support demand often result in poor advance rates ? This has motivated mining companies to replace the conventional drill-and-blast as the main excavation method with alternative methods such as mechanized excavation. ? There is little experience with mechanized or non-explosive excavation methods in hard rock metalliferous underground mining.

"Abstract -A multi-sensor (electromagnetics, magnetics, gamma-ray spectrometry, and VLF) geophysical survey was recently conducted in the Purcell Basin of southeastern British Columbia in an area encompassing the world-class Sullivan Sedex deposit. The purpose of the survey was to geophysically characterize the known mineral occurrences and to develop strategies to enhance future mineral exploration in the basin. Follow-up investigations of geology and measurements of rock physical properties helped constrain interpretations of the geophysical data sets.Despite extraction of more than 90% of the ore from the Sullivan deposit, it is clear that the mineralization there, as well as at other Sedex occurrences surveyed, is characterized by high conductivity values, strong bedrock conductors, and elevated magnetic anomaly values. The albite-sericite alteration which accompanies this mineralization yields high potassium and low thorium-potassium ratio values. Associated Moyie gabbro is characterized by low electrical conductivity and radioelement concentrations and by high magnetic anomaly values. The study has also aided exploration for other mineral deposit types including stratabound Cu-Ag, placer gold, vein and disseminated basemetal deposits. In addition, the geophysical data have helped constrain geological interpretations of the basin."

Strain (work)-hardening in tensile tests were examined for low carbon steels with various ferrite grain sizes ranged from 0.4µm to 16µm. The steels had microstructures composed of ferrite grains and dispersed cementite particles. They were fabricated through warm caliber rolling with an accumulative area reduction of 93%. Strain-hardening rate at a given strain increased with an increase in volume fraction of cementite particles. The balance of yield strength and uniform elongation for ultrafine-grained structures could be improved by the dispersion of cementite particles. Effects of the cementite dispersion and the ferrite grain size on the strain-hardening rate can be roughly explained by the work-hardening model with GN-dislocation density. Strain-hardening design using dispersed cementites was proved to be effective in controlling ductility of the ultrafine-grained steels.

"An analysis of the number of industrial injuries shows that the mining sector is particularly affected, since mining is one of the most dangerous industrial activities in Canada. This has led to numerous inquiries, and supports the need for an in-depth study aiming at the identification of factors responsible for these accidents. One possible factor often pointed at is the small crews incentives and this paper presents a scientific approach applied to check a potential link between bonus and accidents at two mining companies located in northwestern Quebec.The data required to do so were the accidents, the salaries and the number of hours worked at each mining site by the hourly paid personnel for the period from June 1979 to January 1982. The analysis of the results derived from the initial information shows different behaviours of the frequency rate vs the bonus rate at these mines. The number of days lost per accident is independent of the bonus rate at both mine sites, as shown by Khisquare tests on contingency tables.IntroductionA wide variety of opinions has been pinpointed by a survey of the literature related to individual or small crew incentives and industrial accidents in sectors of activity where it applies. In addition, various formulae of mining contracts take place in the industry on one part, and statistics from this sector indicate a high accident frequency rate on the other part. These fact s have lead to this scientific investigation which does isolate the direct impact of the bonus on workers' accidents. This study was undertaken with the full support of the Quebec Metal Mining Association.The conclusions of this preliminary phase of the researchproject are presented for two mining complexes in northwestern Quebec. The procedure is somewhat similar to the approach of the Belmoral Commission, with the underlying assumption that bonus has a direct impact on accidents."

"There has been a major evolution of mineral processing technology in the past decade. The evolution has been driven by recognition of broad environmental changes which have impacted various areas of the world. Numerous government regulations have required many mining and mineral processing organizations to introduce changes to reduce the undesirable effects on the environment; many mining companies have voluntarily introduced new technologies and practices which surpass the limits imposed by the regulations. Surprisingly, some of the 'new' technologies are modifications of concepts developed decades earlier. Gravity separation technology is in this category.Mineral Deposits Limited, an Australian company, has been a world leader in the development of mining concepts, reclamation practices and equipment technology that is environmentally suited to today's requirements. This paper relates to equipment used for gravity concentration and electrostatic separation systems, including Reichert cones, spirals, and electrostatic separators. The basic devices and technologies were developed more than forty-five years ago, but use of the systems was quite limited until environmental and conservation practices were recognized and introduced. Spiral concentrators, for example, were patented in the mid-l940s by I.B. Humphreys in Denver , Colorado. The two types of spirals marketed (the Model 24A for minerals and the Model 24C for coal) remained essentially unchanged until expiration of the patents. During this early period most spirals were used in iron-ore wash plants on the Mesabi Range to recover fine iron which previously had been discarded. About the same time sand mining plants in Florida incorporated spirals to recover titanium minerals and zircon from lowgrade beach sands. The Labrador Trough opened new opportunities for spirals when hard-rock iron-ore deposits were developed; approximately 10 000 Model 24A Humphreys spirals were installed between 1958 and 1966. About 5000 spirals of this model are still operating in the same capacity, in spite of the fact that extensive improvements have since been made in gravity separation technology."

In August, 1970, during routine shaft grouting, a major water source was intersected. Water and quicksand under very high pressure entered the shaft at a rate of 65 m3 per minute. The mine and both shafts were flooded. The breach was sealed simultaneously from within the shaft and through a relief hole drilled from surface. The mine was dewatered, rehabilitated and the equipment was restored. Production resumed two years after the accident.

"The expansion of the concentrator at New Gold’s New Afton copper-gold mine in British Columbia, Canada, completed in 2015, included an increase in the required retention time of the cleaning circuit. On site pilot testing of a Woodgrove Staged Flotation Reactor (SFR) had shown that a high grade copper concentrate would be produced with excellent recovery. The SFR was selected rather than conventional tank cell technology based on the much smaller footprint (which rendered a separate and expensive building extension unnecessary), high concentrate grades demonstrated in testing, and the lower energy requirement. Three SFRs, each capable of taking a nominal feed of 700 cubic meters per hour were installed and commissioned 10 months after the receipt of order. The SFRs operate in series and all of the cells produce a final concentrate typically grading 32% Cu, while the overall SFR stage recovery averages 55%. The tailings from the SFRs are treated in the original conventional three-stage cleaner circuit where the remaining values are recovered in a concentrate grading 28% Cu. Design production was achieved within days of the initial start-up of the SFR circuit.INTRODUCTIONThe New Afton concentrator, located near Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada processes a copper-gold ore with a designed head grade of 0.96% Cu, 0.72 g/tonne Au, and 2.22 g/t Ag.The New Afton Mine is a block cave mining operation. Ore is undercut from the bottom up and removed at the extraction level from a grid of draw points. Ore is trammed to the ore passes by underground loader and dropped to a haulage level for transport by trucks to the gyratory crusher. From the crusher, the ore is conveyed to the mill via a 4.5 kilometre long conveyor system. Block caving was chosen for the New Afton deposit because the underground infrastructure could be built below the historical open pit of the Afton Mine (a previous operation of Teck Resources) and this method is favorable to large-scale low-cost mining.The New Afton deposit is a copper-gold, alkalic porphyry system. Hypogene mineralization is characterized by discontinuous copper sulphide veinlets and disseminations, principally chalcopyrite and minor bornite, along with pyrite as the second most dominant sulphide. Gold particles vary in size from 5 µm to 40 µm and occur as native gold and electrum, associated mostly with the chalcopyrite grains and never with the pyrite. In some instances, a second alteration phase has resulted in the copper sulphides being replaced by tennantite-tetrahedrite locally and along faults that transect the mineralized body. The design head grade of arsenic is 244 PPM, although the presence of tennantite is inconsistent and can vary from trace levels to 15% of the total copper. No arsenopyrite is present in the hypogene ores. Supergene mineralization, consisting of native copper with accessory chalcocite occurs in minor amounts along faults and highly oxidized near-surface portions of the deposit."

"Maclaren Forest Products Inc.Lime is commonly used for the neutralization of acid, and the removal of heavy metals in mine waste waters. However, the precipitation of heavy metals as hydroxides must take place under conditions of controlled pH, to produce minimum concentrations of dissolved metals. An account is presented explaining the concepts applied to lime-treatment processes at Bell Mine during the period of a supernatant discharge to Babine Lake; October 18, 1982to January 25, 1983. IntroductionBell Mine of Maclaren Forest Products Inc., Babine Mining Division, an open-pit copper mine, is located on Newman Peninsula, Babine Lake approximately 65 kilometres northeast of the town of Smithers, British Columbia (Fig. 1).A depressed market for copper metal in 1982 forced a management decision to suspend operations at the mine for an indefinite period from October 3 I, 1982. For some time prior to the mine closing date, mine management was concerned about the increasing level of supernatant in the tailings pond , and its possible effects on the stability of the dam when cycloning of mill tailings ceased. Consideration of these potential hazards led to an application being filed with the Provincial Waste Management for a permit to discharge the excess water to Babine Lake. This large lake, an important link with several significant salmon spawning sites, is a major contributor to the British Columbia commercial fishing industry. Jurisdiction for the environmental affairs in the area is shared by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Environmental Protection Service, and the Provincial Waste Management Branch. These agencies were directly concerned in the formulation of discharge permit following joint consultation, and exchange of information with the company on environmental concerns. An approval was finally granted to discharge approximately 1,000,000 cubic metres of supernatant from the tailings impoundment at Bell Mine into Hagan Arm, Babine Lake from October 18, 1982 with a daily discharge not to exceed 9000 cubic metres. Provisions were made that a particular discharge procedure be followed, and that the company would be responsible for setting up a sampling and monitoring program to safeguard the quality of the effluent."

"In addition to the actual energy consumed, billing is dependent on the peak load and the power factor. The lower the power factor goes, the higher will be the penalty the consumer pays. The principles of a power factor regulator, the two ways of improving the power factor and methods for calculating the capacitor values required will be described.The rate structure of the utility company is founded on three cornerstones: the energy consumed during a given period of time and two penalties imposed when the power factor is low or the power demand is high. Even though the normal consumption of a customer might be 10 kW, with a peak demand of 20 kW only once a month, the wiring and associated equipment at the input to the customer's plant will have to accommodate this peak demand. The power company has no means of forecasting these demands and cannot therefore provide the additional equipment necessary. So it exacts a penalty, and the customer must take all possible steps to avoid these peak power demands. This can be accomplished by using an automatic peak load regulator which will selectively disconnect the loads which are not essential in the operation of a plant .The principles of such a controller will be described.Principles of power factor regulatorsThe operating principles of a power factor regulator will now be described. It might be asked why the power factor of an electrical installation in a mine, or a factory, should be corrected at all, but there is a simple answer. "The objectives of the Wabush Mines tailings stabilization program are to control dust Ii/t-off and to rehabilitate the disposal area. The evolution of the program started with test plots in 1970, these being continued and expanded upon through 1974. In 1976, a 35-acre vegetation field trial was attempted and failed, part of the failure being attributed to lack of adequate equipment. Subsequently, equipment was purchased and during the summer of 1979-80 extensive areas were treated. The program was also expanded to include the evaluation of chemical and water spray stabilization versus vegetation in areas where shorter-term control is required. In addition, during the summers of 1979-80, spruce bog material was spread over about 100 acres and seeded.The approach to reclamation by vegetation at Wabush is one of soil building. Work to this point indicates that iron ore tailings can be converted to a soil capable of supporting plants. Plans for the Wabush tailings disposal area should make dust lift-off from inactive tailings areas negligible within the next few years."

"Dust collectors are used to reduce airborne dust levels generated during crushing at a mining operation and their adequate maintenance is required to ensure effective control of health and safety hazards associated with dusty conditions. Although the pitot traverse technique is commonly employed to balance these dust collectors, the use of an alternative-the equilibrium concentration tracer gas method-is proposed in this paper. This method, which uses sulphur hexafluoride as a tracer gas, can be used to balance airflows in dust collectors and to determine hood collection efficiency accurately and effectively. This technique also reduces some of the errors inherent to pitot tube measurements. IntroductionIndustrial dust collectors are used to reduce dust genera ted by processes like cru shin g, and these must be periodically checked and balanced to ensure continuing effective control of health and safety hazards associated with dusty conditions.To date, the pitot tub e traverse technique has been commonly used to balance air flows in dust collectors. However, this technique is both time -consuming and cumbersome. The equilibrium concentration tracer gas method, described in this paper, is proposed as a viable alternative as it is faster, more reliable, and amenable to automation. The use of tracer gases for such task s is not new. This approach has been used in a variety of mining situations to determine volumetric flow rates in underground openings, leak age through mine stoppings, the effectiveness of face ventilation, pollution migration patterns, mine air recirculation rates, and rock porosity."

The FMC Westvaco Trona Mine is located near Green River, Wyoming and has an annual production of 4.5 M tons. The underground mine has three active development panels and one longwall panel. The mining horizon is about 500 m below surface and strata liberate methane. Three surface-based blowing fans provide ventilation air. A ventilation survey and subsequent analysis was undertaken and a simulation model developed. Air heating during winter is essential to prevent freezing of pipelines and to lesser degree, for miner comfort. Air at all three intake shafts is heated using gas-fired heat exchangers. A strata heat study was conducted in one of the active panels to determine rock attributes. Tests included in-situ measurements of rock thermal conductivity and geothermal gradient. Continuously methane monitors have also been installed in an active development panel?s return drift. Ventsim ventilation software was used to aid the heat and contaminant simulation study. An exercise was also undertaken to gain some understanding of methane contaminant levels throughout the mine. It was further used to determine an adequate surface intake air heating rate and consequently the minimum natural gas consumption needed for winter intake air heating at the mine.
