Au/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation and tested for the room temperature photocatalytic reforming of methanol in aqueous solution. These catalysts proved to be more active, on a molar basis, than Pd/TiO2. The dependence on loading of gold was different from that of palladium, showing a double maximum in yield at 0.1 and 2 wt. % with low rate below 0.01% and above 10%. A model is proposed for the reaction involving band gap excitation of titania electrons which are used to oxidise the methanol via adsorbed CO. With palladium, photoreforming of CO and water can be achieved, but this is much less effective on gold, presumably due to the much weaker bonding of CO on Au.

Introduction Flame shots are of very infrequent occurrence in the coal mines of Nova Scotia. Probably not more than one is recorded in three months. Many shot-firers have never experienced one, and many never will. As a consequence, although all such occurrences are very carefully investigated, information concerning the cause of flame shots is somewhat meagre. In the course of the years, however, something has been learned of the practices and conditions that are responsible for them. During the past ten? years, over seventeen million shots were fired in the coal mines of Nova Scotia and only fifty-two faulty shots were reported or investigated during that time. In thirty-nine of these, flames were reported; in five, sparks only; and in eight, smoke only. In eight of these occurrences, unburned explosive was found after firing. In one of these eight, flame was seen in the back part of the hole, and an accompanying hissing sound pointed to burning explosive. In four of them, there was no evidence that gas was not ignited. All samples of explosives from these faulty shots which were submitted for analysis were found to be normal, except two, in 1937, which contained excessive moisture. These two samples were from two following shots in the same room on the same day. The initial cause of trouble with all eight shots was one or several of the following: explosives in poor condition, separation of cartridges, incorrect priming, shot hole in poor condition or not properly cleaned. In the case of sixteen or seventeen of the thirty-nine shots which flamed, data are insufficient for conclusions to be drawn as to the cause of the flame.

"This paper introduces novel comminution flowsheet concepts involving a novel apparatus, eccentric-high-pressure-centrifugal-comminution (eHPCC), and forthcoming advantages to the international mineral processing community. eHPCC is one-machine synergising high-pressure-rolling surfaces, high-intensity-attrition and centrifugal classification. eHPCC has demonstrated: an absorbed power- intensity of 4 MW/m3; receipt of lump feed whilst producing 80% of product particles less than (p80) 120 µm (choke-fed, dry, open circuit without grinding media; an inert comminution environment); tramp metal tolerance, and a minimum embodied-free-energy saving of 15% as compared against conventional comminution (this comparison withstanding 133-times difference in throughput). Furthermore, this paper introduces: process design and operating characteristics of eHPCC (wet, dry, with and without grinding media); reline considerations (vertical-lift without confined-space). The international mineral processing community is invited to consider eHPCC as an alternative to conventional comminution circuits and/ or complimentary so as to enhance existing process flow sheets.INTRODUCTIONEccentric-high-pressure-centrifugal-comminution (eHPCC) was conceived in 2013 (Patents pending) and has the potential to eliminate the in-efficiencies and complexity of conventional tumbling mill circuits. During the development and testing phase eHPCC demonstrated improved energy efficiency and sustainability offsets.eHPCC will compliment any upstream feed source, be it run-of-mine (ROM), primary crushed rock, or any other conventional comminution stream such as tumbling mill oversize. Another novelemerging technology, Conjugate Anvil-Hammer Mill (CAHM) (Nordell and Potapov, 2011), receiving ROM, will be a complimentary open-circuit feed to eHPCC for very high throughput flow-sheets.eHPCC may compliment downstream process requirements through selective mineral liberation. Selective mineral liberation is entirely feasible as the ore is comminuted upon itself (autogenously) in the high pressure zone caused by the synchronous rotating components."

Abstract - During geostatistical estimation of block grades, the kriging process produces a measure of error, the kriging variance or the kriging standard deviation. Estimation of the block error depends on the semi-variogram model for a deposit, which reflects fundamental characteristics of a deposit such as (1) nugget effect, (2) range of influence of grades, (3) different local spreads of data as a function of average grade (proportional effect), (4) nested structures, and (5) underlying anisotropies in the data; this model may be affected by sampling or assaying limitations, however. Because the kriging error incorporates so many features of both the deposit and data to be used for estimation, it may offer a substantial improvement on block classification over traditional procedures such as data density. Practice indicates that the relative kriging standard deviation (RKSD) is particularly useful for block classification in measured, indicated and inferred categories. Plots of RKSD in plan and section also can be used to demonstrate where extra drilling and sampling would be most advantageous for upgrading the class of some blocks. Moreover, the use of grade and RKSD filters can show where material near cut-off grade is poorly defined, indicating sampling target areas to improve block classification in the vicinity of the ore-waste boundary.

Unfortunately, there is a real possibility that the discussion paper will wither and die on the vine, unless the federal and provincial governments, and the private sector, collectively ensure that some of the key considerations which are raised by the paper are acted upon.IntroductionAlmost one year ago, on March 8, 1982, Federal Mines Minister July Erola released an important study entitled ""Mineral Policy-A Discussion Paper"". The discussion paper, which presents the government's assessment of the opportunities and constraints facing the Canadian mineral industry in the 1980s, was prepared within the context o f three principal objectives-strengthening the resource base on which the industry rests, ensuring the adequacy of research activities needed to support development of the resource, and furthering the development of markets for the resource It is clear that, in today's economic climate, not even the most generous incentives would turn the industry around: what is needed is a sound base for future development, when this is possible. In this regard, the discussion paper is an excellent stepping stone, in that it reviews a wide range o f fundamental policy issues which touch on all facets o f the mining industry."

"This paper summarizes structural repairs carried out on a marine wharf consisting of six 13.7 m by 13.7 m reinforced concrete cribs linked together by five 14.6 m long beam spans. As a result of problems during original construction and twenty years exposure to severe weather conditions, the deck support system between the cribs required major restoration work. In particular, some of the beam seats under the crane rail supports had marginal bearing area to support the structural loads. Faced with closure order for the wharf which is required to bring in raw materials to the plant and a long outage to make repairs as stipulated by Ports Canada (owners of the structure) alternate means of making the required repair were examined.The method chosen allowed the work to be done much more quickly, at lower cost, without taking the wharf completely out of service. The badly deteriorated seats were rebuilt using epoxy grout, tapered sole plates and a positioning jig."

The optimal selection of machine or machine group for building processes is very important role of building planner during the process of building planning. During this process building planner have to analyze several factors influencing the final effective decision concerning this problem. There are several factors and criteria for effective selection of building machines. In our contribution there are analyzed: ability of machines to realize designed building process (quality aspect), duration of mechanized process (time aspect) and minimizing of energy consumption (cost and environmental aspect). Selected scientific methods and theories of problem solution can be divided into these groups: theory of system (creation of building machine selection method), multi-criteria optimizing method (analysis of mechanized building process from the point of more optimal criteria), queuing theory (application during the mathematical modeling of mechanized soil processes), method of scientific analysis (analysis of factors influencing final decisions), method of scientific synthesis (creation of optimizing method implemented into building processes and possible application in construction sector). Multi-criteria optimizing method were during our research work implemented into soil processes and selected building group machines (excavators and trucks), which are very often used in construction and mining processes. This method can be considered as a multi-level decision making process based on multiple parameters. In our contribution is presented key mathematical models for model example solution and software built in Java, which has been created as a support for method described in this contribution. Application of this method and software will increase the effectiveness of building machine selection from the point of key criteria of optimizing: quality, time and energy consumption.

Twin Mining made a conscious decision when it changed from gold mine explorer and developer to become a diamond explorer in Canada?s Arctic. It was a decision of survival in an environment that saw junior gold companies either disappear or turn into dot com companies. Twin Mining learned fast and staked within weeks of that decision the first 50 sq. km of claims on, what became, its TORNGAT property at 59½° latitude on the east coast of the Ungava Bay in northern Quebec. This land position, 724 diamonds later (including 322 macro diamonds of gem quality, white and transparent) grew to 507 sq. km today. The 74° latitude called when Twin Mining exercised the option to acquire 3 claims owned by Helix Resources Inc. which revealed exceptional diamond potential. A gem quality 5.4 mm (0.768 carat white and transparent) diamond and the discovery of 16 pipes on 15.2 ha convinced Twin Mining?s board to sanction the deal. Both properties have outstanding features. Kimberlite Dykes and Pipes are in outcrop. The property locations have deep-sea access near existing infrastructure. Their locations are in an environment that is stable and development friendly and has a positive track record with successfully operating mines near-by.

End-of-life electrical and electronic scrap material attracts attention as a good opportunity for new value creation through efficient metal and energy recovery of such materials. On the other hand, the treatment of such wastes becomes important to avoid problems for society and environment. Treatment of such secondary raw materials faces multiple challenges due to their increasing complexity and evolving nature. Processing of these complex scrap materials together with recovery of a wide range of valuable metals with a combination of pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy using Outotec technology is discussed in this paper. One key consideration is environmental performance which needs attention when processing such complex secondary E-waste materials. Outotec has successful experience with commercial projects in the countries at the forefront of environmental and operational standards. INTRODUCTION Increasing attention has been drawn to the responsible processing of end of life Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) as part of metals recycling, especially copper. It has been estimated that the amount of WEEE globally in 2016 was around the level of 46 Mtpa (Balde et al., 2017), representing a major disposal challenge but at the same time huge opportunity for resource recovery. The potential for increasing the recovery is high, because the official recycling rate of WEEE is in 2016 only 20% (Balde et al., 2017) and at the same time the estimated increase of the WEEE amount is between 3 and 5% per annum in the EU (Eurostat, 2019).

Yet, it is well known that a forced-air sidewall cooling system is part of the AP50 cell design [2], In the present study, the authors analyze the impact of thermal loading on the mechanical deformation of high amperage cell potshells. The effect of adding cooling fins or a forced-air sidewall cooling system is then assessed.

LIMESTONE, as a name, covers a great variety of stone consisting of varying amounts of calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, and impurities such as silica, alumina, and sulphate of lime. In the iron and steel industry, limestone is roughly divided into two classes, namely Calcite, when the magnesium carbonate content is below 10 per cent, and Dolomite, when the magnesium carbonate is over 10 per cent. In practically all metallurgical melting, the quality of the finished product is related to the character of the slag, and limestone is used as a flux to achieve the proper analysis and consistency. The function of the slag is to absorb the undesired elements of the bath and also to act as a protective cover over the metal. The carbonates of calcium and magnesium are the effective agents in fluxing, and the silica, alumina, sulphur, and other foreign matter are objectionable impurities which should be as low as possible, totalling not over S per cent and preferably below 3 per cent, since all of these so-called impurities must be fluxed by the lime and magnesia of the stone. When the lime and magnesia of the stone have to be used to flux its own impurities, there is that much less of these two oxides left for fluxing the impurities from the balance of the charge, and, as a result, more lime-stone must be used than is desirable with good practice.

Geochemical dispersion of metals under various environmental conditions is discussed within the frame-work of Eh (oxidation potential) and pH (acidity). In general, two aspects are considered -(1) the oxidation of certain primary sulphides in the outcrop or sub-outcrop environment, and (2) the movement of metals in different dispersion media. Practical applications of each are illustrated by means of exploration case histories representing environmental conditions in the Canadian Shield, the southwestern United States and the Caribbean.

"Pure magnesium is a material with high functionality, however, the cold drawing of this material is very difficult, that is why, until this day there are no optimal cold drawing conditions. Furthermore, cold drawing of pure magnesium wire shows a problem with internal defects that occurs under certain conditions. In this research, the aim is the suppression of internal defects, and final target is to create the optimal cold drawing conditions for pure magnesium wires. The first step is the investigation of the drawing limit by using 250°Cannealed wire. As a result, reduction of 10% per pass was chosen for stable wire drawing. However, in this case, it was found that internal defects occurred at total reduction of over 45% during drawing. Investigation of intermediate annealing conditions that can suppress internal defects, and influence on internal defect that the die half angle and reduction per pass. As a result, it was found that the drawing condition capable of suppressing internal defects most efficiently was 13% reduction drawing by using under 6°half angle die. Consequently, it’s possible to manufacture a cold fine drawn pure magnesium wire of 100µm, without defects in the center of the wire and hindering its mechanical properties.INTRODUCTIONMagnesium is a light and high functionality material that has high vibration absorbency, heat dissipation, electromagnetic wave-shielding and recycling efficiency (Conruy, 1989). However, proper cold wire drawing conditions haven’t been established, that is why warm or hot processing is commonly used (Oishi, Mori, &Kawabe, 2005). As a result, strength improvement of the wires is not possible, that is why the production of medical tools is disregarded. If it was possible to cold draw magnesium wires, the applications for material products would expand. Further, in wire drawing such difficult processing material, if appropriate processing conditions are not selected, defects will be generated inside the drawn wire."

For the purpose of reservoir-performance calculations a balance can be made between the materials with-in the reservoir and the production from the reservoir. The material balance equation, a relationship which holds under or near equilibrium conditions, has been used in many forms by the Petroleum Engineer for the determination of initial oil-in-place in the reservoir and the calculation of performance into the future. One of the more recent methods developed by Tracy, utilizes a modified form of the Schilthuis material balance. "Many deposits have a geological model developed early in the project stages, which is not always reviewed or modified as the project matures and production commences. Conversely, ongoing pressures, due to a combination of declining head grades, a push for increased revenue and a multitude of other reasons, leads to processing plant modifications, with the primary aim being to increase production. Often, the ore deposit knowledge is not sustained or developed during the operational stages to the level carried out during the prefeasibility and feasibility study phases. This results in the variability within the deposit being poorly understood and a lack of data and knowledge being available to support (and ideally optimise) operations particularly in an environment where the flow sheet has changed and ore feed requirements are complex.INTRODUCTION This paper presents a case study of ore deposit knowledge development and corresponding process plant operating strategy at the Ladolam Gold Deposit, commonly referred to as the Lihir gold deposit in Papua New Guinea. The gold deposit is located in a tropical equatorial climate on the east side of Lihir Island in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea. Gold mineralisation was discovered in 1982, and was followed by a major exploration campaign by a joint venture between Kennecott (Rio Tinto) and Nuigini Mining Limited. The first drillhole was drilled in 1983, and after an extensive period of drilling consisting of 343 holes for 83,500 m, the final Feasibility Study was completed in 1992. The feasibility study was based on a Reserve base of 37.9 Moz in refractory sulphide ore, with gold extraction proposed to occur via whole ore pressure oxidation due to the refractory nature of the mineralisation. The Lihir Special Mining Lease (SML) was granted in 1995 to a new PNG company – Lihir Gold Limited, and Rio Tinto established Lihir Management Company to develop and operate the mine on behalf of LGL. Mining and processing of the deposit commenced in 1997. Newcrest Mining Limited purchased Lihir Gold Limited in August 2010, and subsequently completed a major plant upgrade including the installation of additional grinding, autoclave and carbon-in-leach capacity. Post commissioning of the upgrade, Newcrest has continued to increase throughput and production. A reinvigorated ore body knowledge development program has significantly assisted this process in identifying operating strategies for the process plant and delivering recovery improvement projects to address declining head grade and recovery due to increased stockpile feed and flotation circuit use."

It demonstrates how everyone worked toward a goal of developing a product that is accepted as a useful addition to the work environment.The Mechanic's Stethoscope is an underground vehicle diagnostic system consisting of computer hardware and software intended to assist mechanics in daily tasks. Its tools facilitate quick and easy access to any information required during the maintenance of an underground vehicle. Each tool presents vehicle condition data in a simplified manner. The additional information improves the mechanics understanding of the vehicle condition. The result is a healthier fleet of vehicles and faster diagnosis times.When introducing a computer based system into a traditionally non-computer oriented environment a concern is the acceptance of the system. This concern exists on many levels."
