A pilot plant of the Modular Gold Processing Unit (MGPU) was designed, installed and operated, over a 8 months period, by RSW-Béroma, at the Granada Mine located near Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. A description of the project geology, plant set up as well as exploitation results, including productivity and profitability curves, are given for a small scale mining operation in comparison with larger ones. Economics, Resources, Environment and Technology are the major driving forces in the base metals industry. However, these factors are intertwined and together will propel the industry in the future. The demand for metals has grown with economic expansion, between 2 to 4 % p.a. The current growth cycle has been driven by economic expansion in China where the demand for base metals has risen from - 7 % of the world demand in the 90's to - 25 % of world demand today, and rising. Base metals are commodities and their demand and price are cyclical. Historically metal prices have declined in constant dollars, forcing the industry to reduce costs, increase productivity and increase the scale of operation for economies of scale. Due to resource depletion and capacity expansion the industry is driven to expand its reserve and resource base. However, in the case of sulphide deposits of copper and nickel it appears to be a losing battle. For nickel the laterites represent a vast source at this time. Their development requires development of new technologies to make these resources economic. Emission reduction is being increasingly mandated in most jurisdictions with all governments enacting progressively more stringent regulations. The industry has been responding with technological innovation. With the Kyoto protocol there is a push to reduce energy intensity in metal production. Technological innovation is driven by all the other factors and is leading to novel ways of doing exploration, mining and processing, that would maximize resource delineation and utilization, reduce costs, increase productivity, reduce energy consumption, maximize asset utilization and reduce environmental affects. Development of alternative technologies such as Pressure Acid Leach of laterite for nickel, bio-leaching, heap leaching, SX-EW etc are being adopted to achieve the aims of the industry.

The leaching kinetics of iron during the atmospheric direct leaching (ADL) of marmatite concentrate was studied under the following conditions: reaction temperature of 343-383 K, slurry pressure of 0.3-0.7 MPa, particle size of (-74 ?m, +63 ?m), (-63 ?m, +44 ?m), (100%-44 ?m). The statistical effects of reaction temperature, total pressure and particle size of concentrate on the extraction and the leaching rate of iron were analyzed. The results show that reaction temperature is a significant factor while slurry pressure and particle size are not statistically meaningful with respect to the extraction or the leaching rate. The extraction of iron fits better to the mixed-controlled shrinking core model and the apparent activation energy was calculated to be 37.66 kJ/mol. The leaching of iron is mixed controlled by the interfacial chemical reaction and diffusion across the product layer.

ABSTRACT: The Victor diamond mine is located in the James Bay lowlands, 90 km west of the First Nations village of Attawapiskat. The project was the first of its kind in northern Ontario. The process plant was designed to produce a 95 to 98% by weight diamond concentrate through three stages of comminution, dense medium separation, and proprietary X-ray technology for final recovery. The plant was commissioned over a period of six months, commencing prior to substantial completion of construction. Through effective planning of the commissioning phase, the Victor mine start-up was safely completed nine months ahead of schedule.

ABSTRACT Northern Saskatchewan boasts some of the world’s largest known high-grade uranium deposits. The successful mining of these deposits cannot be accomplished without overcoming technical challenges, however, which include high grade of the uranium ore, specialized mining methods to deal with groundwater at high pressures, and poor ground conditions. This paper discusses the various mechanisms of inflows at three of Cameco Corporation’s sites in northern Saskatchewan. The risk of inflows is quantified in terms of unique challenges due to hydrogeological conditions, rock mass integrity, and uncertainty in geological conditions. Strategies in the case of an inflow are also briefly described.

"IntroductionSULPHUR production in Canada from all sources for the year 1953 amounted to about 375,000 tons. Except for 16,000 tons of elemental sulphur derived from natural gas, this production was in the form of by-product pyrites, liquid sulphur dioxide, and sulphuric acid. In the same year, Canadian industry imported 359,000 tons of elemental sulphur from the United States. The cost, including transportation charges, to Canadian consuming plants ranged from $35.00 to $45.00 per long ton, depending upon location.Although most of the sulphur consumed is used in the oxidized form it is often most convenient to buy sulphur in the elemental form, and convert it to sulphur dioxide or sulphuric acid in situ as required. This is because elemental sulphur is easily shipped and stored, weighs only half as much as an equivalent quantity of sulphur dioxide and one-third as much as the corresponding quantity of sulphuric acid, and is readily converted to these forms in a sulphur burner. A process, therefore, which could economically recover elemental sulphur from sulphide ores would be most attractive.Since the turn of the century, notable improvements have been made in extractive metallurgy, but until recently only limited attention has been paid to the possibilities of elemental sulphur recovery. This has been due to the plentiful supplies of cheaply mined Frasch sulphur which have been available on the world markets."

"An evaluation of mineralization in the Goosly- Owen Lake area of central British Columbia is the result of a comprehensive geochemical study of rock samples obtained from a regional geological survey. The dispersion of metals in country rocks about a line of Tertiary intrusions suggests that these igneous bodies may be genetically related to known sulphide replacements, disseminations and vein deposits. The geochemical investigation is based on the determination of 12 elements from samples gathered from more than 800 scattered field stations. To assist processing and interpretation, the data are subjected to a variety of statistical procedures, including correlation of the elements, factor analysis, clustm• analysis and computer contouring of the elements. Some practical applications of rock geochemistry in regional exploration are indicated."

This is the first in a series of Coal Technology Reviews being prepared in accordance with a recommendation voted by the Coal Division in session at the Jubilee Meeting, Vancouver, April, 1948, that the Department of Mines and Resources be requested to arrange for publication by the proper Government authority of a Quarterly Review' of Coal Technology, for distribution among those concerned in the production and use of coal in Canada. This recommendation was subsequently endorsed both by the Council of the Institute and by the Dominion Coal Board. Further reviews (or digests) will appear at intervals in the Bulletin, or will be published and distributed by the Board which, meanwhile, has undertaken to distribute reprints of Mr. Ignatieff's review.-En. * * * The fields in coal mining technology which are considered to demand most attention and study at the present time are reviewed under the headings appearing below. Mechanization In the light of the growing shortage of skilled miners and the necessity of mitigating constantly increasing mining costs, interest continues to centre in mining methods and applications of mechanization chat will produce the maximum reduction of man power. The growth of strip or open-cut mining, also, is a consequence of this trend. Mechanization at the face attracts most attention and the trend is toward developing and adopting machines capable of cutting and loading the coal in one operation instead of having the separate operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading. In Great Britain, where longwall mining is? the general practice, the A.B. Meco-Moore machine still receives much attention, and accounts describing its performance over reasonably long periods have appeared in the technical press.

"Most FeNi furnaces used to rely on post-combustion and off-gas cooling inside the furnace to eliminate the produced CO gas, and control the off gas temperature. As furnace load, capacity, and thus gas volumes increased over the years, this led to increased instabilities that can cause problems in controlling the operation. Some of the large capacity furnaces nowadays work with partial or full combustion outside the furnace, more similar to the steel industry. Forced combustion with or without enriched air and other additions can support in controlling post-combustion, stabilizing and even reducing off gas amounts, and affecting composition. This paper presents some of the possibilities and advantages of having a specially designed post-combustion system for the FeNi laterite industry, but that could also be applied to other processes as well.Large Scale Furnaces In the FeNi industry, the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) process is still going strong in spite of continuous hope that hydrometallurgical processes will one day make the RKEF plant obsolete. Within the pyrometallurgical plants there is a continuous trend for larger scale furnaces. The development for a number of furnaces that were started before 1985 and increased capacity by “natural growth” is given in Figure 1. Natural growth refers to the development of the plants that after having mastered a certain level of operation, were ready for a higher load that could be installed either with a new furnace on the same site, or during a revamp. The advantages of natural growth are numerous, for example: •,Deep knowledge of the ore and its’ behavior, no need for testing, and little risk of surprises. •,Mining, laboratory, equipment, etc. is all proven technology for the conditions on site. •,Starting a furnace with increased capacity is a re-start, not a green-field commissioning. •,Typically, when increasing the production capacity of an existing plant, not the entire plant is commissioned for the first time, but only a part. In the FeNi laterite industry for example, the kilns may already have had the capacity to provide enough material."

"Abstract- The Ontario Geological Survey completed a regional till sampling project between 1984 and 1988 in the Black River Matheson (BRiM) area of northeastern Ontario. The project was designed to aid mineral exploration in the area by documenting the Quatemary stratigraphy and by providing a database of till geochemistry. This paper summarizes the results from the sonic overburden drilling component of the BRiM project carried out in areas of thick drift (> 5 m). Results from till sampling in areas of thinner drift (<5 m) have been presented in a separate paper. Approximately 1100 till samples were collected from 225 sonic drill holes. For each sample, the non-magnetic heavy mineral (> 3.3 S.G.) and fine (-250 mesh) till fractions were analyzed geochemically and visible gold grains were recovered by panning.Gold and other multielement geochemical data were plotted using proportional symbols to high­ light anomalous areas and to demonstrate how to evaluate and interpret a very large geochemical dataset. Thresholds for identifying anomalous concentrations of Au in till samples, defined using the 95th percentile, are 1500 ppb and 12 ppb for the heavy mineral and fine fractions, respectively. The heavy mineral fraction of older tills and to a lesser extent, Matheson Till, display a number of significant gold anomalies in the study area, which in a few cases, are associated with base metal anomalies. The vertical position of gold anomalies in Matheson and older tills varies from directly on bedrock to several meters above the bedrock surface and can provide information of relative ice transport distances."

"Greater reliability of mineral deposit and reserve estimates can be attained through better quality control of the data and information acquisition, and the estimation processes. This paper reviews the following key requirements:1. greater awareness of the significant figures of both data and estimates, and better understanding of the probabilistic aspects of the estimates, their confidence limits and margins of error;2. greater reliability of the information that supports the estimates, by more explicit and more rigorous methods and standards for data acquisition and for interpretations;3. more quantitative estimations of geological/mineral continuity, based on improved three dimensional sampling patterns and the use of geostatistics; and 4. better integration at the project engineering and mine production stages, of the mineral deposit characteristics and mining method constraints, for more efficient mineral recovery and mine quality control.RÉSUMÉUne plus grande fiabilité des estimations des gisements et des réserves minières requiert plus d&apos;emphase sur le contrôle de la qualité de I ‘acquisition de l&apos;information et du processus d&apos;estimation. This paper deals with coal sampling in general and with mechanical coal sampling in particular. The necessity of obtaining representative samples is emphasized. Other sections of the paper are devoted to the design and selection of automatic samplers, with a consideration of the three main types, and the testing, operation and maintenance of these samplers. The cost of the installation of an automated sampling system must be related to the value of the material to be sampled, to the volume of coal involved, and to the savings in labour and economy which can be achieved. Introduction T HE Committee?:; on Coal Sampling of the Coal Study Subsection, Thermal Power Section (Eastern Zone), Canadian Electrical Association, was established in November, 1963, to "study the various problem areas of coal sampling." The first undertaking of the Committee was to at-tempt to survey the problem areas of coal sampling through an evaluation of coal sampling difficulties as experienced at both the plant design and operational levels within the electric utilities represented on the Committee. Since the first commercial plant was built at Mount Isa, another twenty ISASMELT™ furnaces have come into commercial operation, and construction of new plants continues. The primary copper ISASMELT™ top submerged lance (TSL) technology continues to attract interest from potential users who seek to smelt productively. In addition to the known benefits of productivity and flexibility, ISASMELT™ operators have also achieved improvements to energy efficiency when switching from their previous technologies. The recent production statistics for operation at Tuticorin, India show that ISASMELT™ has taken the first steps into territory beyond 400,000 t/y (copper cathode basis) and this will likely be the scale chosen by future new copper smelters operating purely on a toll smelting basis. SINCE the opening of the Beattie mine, in 1933, the concentrate produced by flotation has been considered refractory. As the gold extraction by cyanidation was poor, the concentrate, during the first four and a half years of operation, was shipped to a smelter for further treatment. After the installation of the cyanide plant, in 1934, seventy per cent of the gold in the concentrate was recovered before shipment to the smelter. In 1937, a roasting plant was built so that treatment might be complete at the mine. Much experimental work had been done by a number of investigators prior to the installation of the roasters, but none of them had seriously attempted to identify the causes of, or the elements responsible for, the refractory behaviour of the concentrate. Intensive investigation in this direction commenced in the Beattie lab-oratory in July, 1938, has led not only to the identification of several causes contributory to the refractory behaviour, but also to revisions in procedure and principles with respect to roasting Beattie concentrate in particular and arsenical concentrates in general. The accuracy of the identification of these causes and the soundness of the principles is borne out by interpretation of roasting plant records, by improvements and simplification since applied. to plant operation, and also by laboratory and test-plant results on arsenical concentrate produced by another mine. It is the purpose here to present an account and interpretation of the laboratory investigation, together with a correlation of laboratory and plant results. Incomplete extraction of the gold by cyanidation after roasting is due primarily to the nature of the material roasted, and secondarily to the manner in which it has been roasted. There is a possibility that better extraction may be obtained by improvements in both particulars.

"A series of new, grease-based, solvent free open gear lubricants were developed to meet the demanding service requirements of mining equipment. The use of these products has resulted in better performance under conditions of temperature extremes and in terms of longer component lives. They have gained widespread acceptance within the mining communities for such applications as the lubrication of mining shovels, draglines and ball mills.These products are WHMIS non-controlled and are environmentally acceptable. The benefits and advantages of using this type of product to lubricate mining equipment as well as the field evaluation and experience will be discussed."

"IntroductionCARBONIZATION, gasification, and chemical utilization of coal are interrelated topics, which makes it difficult to review one without indicating its connection with the others. Hence, in Progress in Coal Technology, Series No. 5: Carbonization, reference was made to gaseous products recovered in the carbonization of coal, and .to a number of chemicals made from the tars, light oils, and ammoniacal liquors which are by-products of coal carbonization.In this, the sixth paper in the review series, prime consideration will be given to the complete gasification of coal to give a fuel for domestic industrial, or power purposes and a synthesis gas suitable for the manufacture of gasoline, Diesel oil, and chemicals. The hydrogenation of coal, an alternative source of liquid fuels and of chemicals, will be reviewed, as will be a number of processes for •the recovery of chemical products from coal by extraction and chemical treatment."

A vertical tube, 8 m long and 2.5 cm in diameter, electrically heated to 650°C throughout the majority of its height, was used to study the-effect of ore feed rate and hydrogen flow rate on the reduction of fine iron ore particles. A correlation could be obtained between the combined effect of the amount of reducing gas and reduction time and the per-cent reduction. The results suggest that a method based on the reduction of fine iron ores while falling through up-streaming hydrogen cannot be recommended for industrial application.

ABSTRACT Reconnaissance exploration in the Kuene region Namibia has included geological mapping, soil and stream sediment geochemistry, and ground geophysical methods. Copper mineralization occurs within a well-defined belt with north-northwest to south-southeast trend, parallel to the regional strike of the sedimentary rocks. The occurrences vary in size but are generally stratabound. The mineralization is centred on the transition from calcareous shale and interbedded limestone, through carbonate rocks, to quartzite. Geochemical anomalies have been identified correlating to induced polarization (IP) and magnetic anomalies. The anomalies identify one potential metallogenic zone more than 17 km in strike length.

A chemical process, based on laboratory investigations, is proposed for the production of high-purity niobium oxide from a pyrochlore-perovsk1te flotation concentrate produced from ore obtained at the Oka, Quebec property of Columbium Mining Products Limited. The method developed included the decomposition and dissolution of the flotation concentrate with hot, concentrated sulphuric acid. The dissolved niobium was purified and concentrated by a solvent extraction step, using methyl isobutyl ketone as the extractant. The niobium was recovered from the extractant with ammonium fluoride solution from which niobium oxide was precipitated with ammonia. Finally, the filtered and washed precipitate was calcined. Ninety-six per cent of the niobium was recovered in a product analysing 99.9 per cent Nzo.. The reagent cost was in the range of $1.00 to $1.25 per pound of niobium recovered. Introduction OVER the past few years, Columbium Mining Products Limited has been engaged in the development of a niobium-bearing mineral deposit in the vicinity of Oka, Quebec. There is an increasing awareness on an international level of the potential for utilizing many wastes and by-products as construction materials. This has resulted in recent major reviews by OECD and RILEM to supplement national activities by agencies such as CANMET, USBM, BRE and LCPC. Much of this international and national work was reported during an International Conference on the use of by-products and wastes in civil engineering held in November 1978 in Paris. Based on participation in the OECD and RILEM reviews, and the Paris conference, developments in waste and byproduct utilization of particular concern to Canada are described. The major technical and economic constraints involved are also reviewed, so that the over-all evaluation reflects important factors such as inherent variability and transport logistics. Areas requiring further research and development are also identified. Particular emphasis is placed on slags, salvaged asphaltic concrete and surplus sulphur. "Due to the rapid development of China&apos;s industry, more than a hundred million tons of industrial wastes are generated annually, which occupy lots of land for storing, bring about environmental pollution, obstruct industrial and agricultural production and cause harm to people &apos;s living. Therefore we must utilize them effectively to create wealth for our country. "
