The mineral industry is an important element in the human environment and in varying degrees contributes to the general standard of living throughout most of the world, both by supplying the basic materials required for heavy industry, transportation, construction, scientific equipment, and many labour saving tools and also by its contribution to the international economy.When projecting population growth and per capita resource utilization against a finite amount of nonrenewable mineral resources, it is apparent that at some future time, if the established trend continues, the supply of industrial minerals will progressively become exhausted according to their relative scarcity and world demand.In one way or another all of nature's mineral resources are used in the sel'vice of man. Some of the products of their manufacture are essential to the survival and further development of our civilization, others are luxuries, desirable but not essential. Marine vessels are essential to maintain a flow of resollrces around the world, and as trade increases the size of the fleet will grow and the quantities of metals needed will be greater.The commodities they transport, may be used in an inefficient or extravagant manner causing unnecessary depletion which may adversely affect the activities of future generations. An example that comes readily to mind is fuel oil, the international transport of which uses a vast tanker fleet. When refined, large quantities of motor spirit are used in motor vehicles. The U.S.A. alone uses 70 billion gallons annually in the 90,000,000 automobiles in use.Much of this is used in private cars-of which there is one for every 2'3 people-for transport between home and city. Well organized community transport would serve the same purpose, conserve a scarce commodity, take some of the stress out of livingdriving in a major city can hardly be considered a relaxing experience-and minimize the problem of atmospheric pollution.Whilst man has demonstrated his great versatility...

Gold mineralisation at the Macraes Gold Project is hosted in the Hyde-Macraes shear zone and can be traced for ~30 km along strike, although economic resources are confined to a seven kilometre section in the vicinity of the Macraes  township. The shear zone, which typically dips at a low angle (~20¦) to the NE, is bounded by an upper hanging wall shear and a lower footwall fault. Mineralisation occurs along the hangingwall of the shear zone as well as in low angle concordant shears and stockworks. Ore types include graphitic cataclasites with variable amounts of quartz veining, 'lode schists' and quartz-vein stockworks. Mine geology and grade control activities are designed to ensure accurate definition of ore and waste as well as the accurate prediction of ore grade. Grade control involves an integrated process of blast hole sampling, geological mapping and geostatistical modelling. Geological mapping is carried out post blasting by means of excavating trenches across are zones defined by assay data. Conditional Simulation is used to model raw assay data to define ore-waste contacts and estimate ore block grade, although, geologically defined contacts have precedence. Low angle ore zones impart a wedge shaped geometry to many ore blocks. These ore blocks are bounded by contacts that can be selectively mined to, thereby reducing misallocation of ore and minimising grade dilution.

Fletcher Challenge Limited through its subsidiary Grampian Mining Co Limited has carried out an ore evaluation of one of New Zealand's largest known deposits of ilmenite located at Barrytown on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. The ilmenite is located in a beach sand environment which has previously been mined for gold. Two analytical techniques were developed to quantify the resource. Considerable difficulty was experienced in this phase of the evaluation due to the presence of major inclusions within the ilmenite grains. Wet and dry concentration circuits, utilising spiral, wet magnet, high tension and plate electrostatic separators have been designed to produce ilmenite from the ore. Studies to utilise the titanium content of the Barrytown ilmenite have been made. Recent work has been directed towards a titanium dioxide pigment process.

Japan is the largest coal importer in the world, importing from Australia, China, Indonesia, Canada, Vietnam, etc. In Indonesia, most of the produced coal is extracted from open cut mines. More open cut coal mines will be developed to fill the demand for coal in Indonesia and the world. Many surveys and projects for developing new coal mines and transferring mining technology are being conducted in tropical counties such as Indonesia and Vietnam with the aid of the Japanese Government. It has, however, been pointed out that excessive and precarious development of mines in tropical areas will damage the environments around the mines including cultivated lands, and reduce the precious rainforest. This would undoubtedly exacerbate the instability of the global climate and the food crisis in the world. This paper describes the effects of flyash on the control of acid mine drainage in order to avoid potential negative impacts on the environment caused from open cut coal mines.

Several drilling programs at Maldon have produced 7790 core samples, which were assayed for gold, with 2825 of the samples assayed for nine other metallic elements. There is a lack of correlation between gold and all other elements. The situation, however, changes dramatically when sorted according to the abundance of arsenic. In the populations where As >200 ppm, there are strong, positive correlations between gold and several elements. There is also a strong positive correlation of Au with the weighted sums and products of all elements with the elemental averages as a weighting factor, and Bi*Sb and Bi*As elemental products. In these populations, there is also a strong positive correlation between the logarithms of Au and logarithms of each element, as well as the elemental sums and products described above. The correlation coefficients increase with higher As cut-off values.All elemental distributions but especially gold show a high-nugget effect and display high skewness and dispersion, low kurtosis, and common outliers. The distributions of their logarithms are several magnitudes less scattered and without outliers. Thus, the logarithmical distribution correlations are best for practical use.Correlation coefficients were T-tested and are statistically significant. The elemental correlations, particularly those of logarithmic values of weighted sums and Bi, could be used as a gold path finding tool at Maldon. After a preliminary assay for gold and arsenic, only samples with As > 200 ppm should be assayed for other elements. Higher values of gold-correlated elements or elemental ratios, in samples with low gold grades, may increase confidence that gold is under reporting due to its highly nuggetty nature.CITATION:Krokowski de Vickerod, J and Ebsworth, G B, 2012. The Department of Mineral Resources is the lead agency in mine site environment management and control inNew South Wales. The Department introduced a Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Plan (MREMP) process several years ago in order to integrate the activities of other government agencies who may have a material interest at the mine site. The MREMP process has resulted in a spirit of trust and co-operation between agencies and between agencies and mining companies. The spirit of co-operation has been reflected in greater public confidence that mining is environmentally responsible.

In a predrained gassy coalmine, ventilation control plays a secondary role to the longwall (LW) goaf drainage systems to safely manage panel return gas levels. Typically, the LW specific gas emission (SGE) estimation models provide anticipated goaf gas emissions and arriving at required gas drainage capacity for various coal production scenarios. A study comparing the various LW goaf gas hole spacing patterns with weekly production rates of up to 270 kt/w of an operating mine with high SGE rates (~20 m3/t) was carried out. The goaf capture efficiency of LW panels ranged from 64 per cent to 85 per cent. For the first time, gas content of upper seam data post LW retreat were used to verify the current SGE prediction models. This study has shown that an average of 50 m goaf spacing is optimal for management of high production retreat gassy LW panels in presence of multiple upper and lower seams with gas emission zone influence reaching up to 200 m above workings. Due to the horizontal stress direction related geotechnical issues, goaf hole failures just behind the LW face is a recurring challenge resulting in significant and immediate increase in LW panel return gas levels. This paper highlights the shortcomings of current SGE prediction models for goaf gas estimation, and evolution of 50 m goaf hole spacing embedded in design process in managing the LW tailgate gas levels.CITATION:Belle, B, 2017. The passage of chloroform vapour in a carrier of oxygen through two nickel sulphide ores heated to 380°C converted the nickel to the water soluble chloride form. In one ore the nickel (2·75 per cent) was presentas violarite ((Ni, Fe)3S4) whereas in the second it was present as pentlandite, ((Fe, Ni)9S8) (4·9 per cent Ni).A similar technique was utilized to convert nickel in nickeliferous laterites (1·6 per cent Ni) into a soluble chloride using town gas instead of oxygen as a carrier.With both techniques greater than 90 per cent extraction was achieved.

McConnell Dowell is pleased to be given the opportunity to present two papers to this conference. The first is a general discussion paper on our work in the field of slurry transportation. The second will be a technical paper on the development of a welded coupling compatible with urethane lined pipework. We trust that by discussing our recent work we can leave two lasting impressions on you: the versatility and useful role of slurry transportation, and the leading role taken by New Zealand in this technology This paper discusses three recent projects the New Zealand Steel Ironsand Transfer Line the Coarse Coal Ship Loading Technology the Nerang River Sand By-pass System. These have followed on from the other slurry projects with which McConnell Dowell has been associated such as the ironsand export trade at Waipipi and Taharoa. The New Zealand Contractors Federation awarded the Construction Award for 1986 to McConnell Dowell for the Ironsand Slurry Pipeline.

The Ekati Diamond Mine is located on permafrost terrain in CanadaÆs Northwest Territories. The mine rock consists of: diamond-bearing and barren kimberlite; and surrounding waste rock such as granite. The kimberlite occurs in several vertical æpipesÆ that are, or will be, mined using open pits. Early predictions of drainage chemistry at Ekati identified the potential for ARD due to sulfide oxidation from both waste rock and kimberlite. This was surprising for the kimberlite, because neutralisation potentials (NP) are typically hundreds of kg CaCO3 equivalent/t. However, subsequent testwork showed that substantial portions of the NP ædisappearedÆ quickly, apparently due to the unusual non-carbonate mineralogy. In any case, additional predictive work concluded much of the rock was benign and there would be no ARD. Shortly after mining started, ARD appeared from both the waste rock and kimberlite, although a few years passed before the company and its consultants recognised that at least some of the acidic water was ARD. Numerous other processes have been put forward as possible explanations for the remaining acidic drainage, although none have been either confirmed or eliminated. Because: the causes of the ARD and acidity are not known; no causes have been eliminated and more have been added; drainage chemistry was not predicted accurately; and future mining will encounter similar rock. I believe the Ekati Diamond Mine needs high-level assistance to understand current chemistry and to avoid problems with future drainage. Organisations like INAP, MEND3, and universities could provide this assistance.

Certain copper ores from the Nchanga Copper Mine in the northern Zambia Copperbelt are refractory with respect to conventional beneficiation techniques. This paper reviews recent study of those ores to determine their mineralogy, textures and nature of copper occurrence. Two suites of refractory ores were selected for study: 1.  samples of stockpiled ores from an open pit, and 2.  drill core samples from copper ores. Both sample suites are from the upper orebody at Nchanga and contain about 0.3 - 1.4 per cent copper as determined by atomic absorption, but they represent separate stratigraphic, mineralogical and beneficiation problems. Ore microscopic examination showed that fine-grained copper sulfides are totally lacking from both suites of refractory ores. Petrographic study found malachite in the refractory ores from the open pit, but that malachite probably is post-mine. The opaque mineralogy of the open pit refractory ores is dominated by goethite that occurs mostly as pseudomorphic grains after pyritohedral pyrite crystals that average 200 - 250 ¦m across. Haematite occurs as bands within or as outer shells of the goethite grains. Additional goethite occurs locally as finer-grained areas of exotic goethite. The opaque minerals in the drill core refractory ores are dominated by euhedral ilmenite crystals about 50 - 175 ¦m long. Anatase is the dominant opaque mineral in some drill core samples where it is largely pseudomorphic after ilmenite crystals. Goethite accompanies malachite in unusual drill core refractory ores that have experienced intense hydrothermal alteration. Thus, ore microscopy and petrography showed that fine-grained chalcopyrite and bornite and pre-mine malachite were not the causes of the refractory nature of the ores studied. Electron microprobe revealed that most of the copper occurred in solid solution within micas. Application of automated SEM techniques has provided a detailed understanding of the distribution of copper in these refractory ores.

A comprehensive analysis of rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging: interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcore is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure. Both solution types rely on constant orientations (orientational stability) of the selected structure, but the internal solution actually provides its own test of orientational stability. External solutions are the norm in outcropping situations and internal solutions are invaluable in blind situations. In blind situations sequential "internal then external" solutions can be used respectively to provide a reference structure and then use this for subsequent external solutions at individual points downhole. Blind prospects can now be drilled and interpreted as easily as outcropping prospects. Each solution type has its own optimum requirements. External solutions are ambiguous for certain orientational relationships between the drillhole and the reference structure (for example, a perpendicular relationship), hence drillholes in which external solutions are planned should be designed to avoid these orientations. Internal solutions are ambiguous for straight drill paths, and are most unambiguously resolved when the drill path attains maximum drillhole dimensionality, that is, it occupies a wide variety of orientations in 3D space; hence drillholes in which internal solutions are planned should be designed as combinations of non-parallel holes or as individual strongly curved holes. For both solution types an understanding of the kind of structural fertility required leads to intelligent design of drill paths, which is termed structural drill targeting. It is distinct from spatial drill targeting, which is the process which defines and (x,y,z) point-or volume-target. Effective design of drilling programs requires both structural and spatial targeting. The external and internal solutions for vectorial parameters are implemented via (1) visual (qualitative), (2) stereographic, or (3) core orienting frame procedures. Each of these has its own advantages. Stereographic procedures have been simplified via the erection of a drillcore reference frame in which three fundamental angles are defined, and the formulation of an all-inclusive set of stereographic recipes for determining orientations from the measurement of these angles. Non- vectorial structural parameters comprise an ad hoc array of useful measures which are simply described by numbers. Examples are angles between structures, and density of structures. Such parameters (some of which provide useful vectors toward ore bodies) are invaluable in drillcore because they can be measured and recorded rapidly, without determining the orientation of the core. In a summary, non-oriented drillcore can now be structurally mapped exactly as if it were outcrop. Interpretation of the significant volume of unique structural information which is beginning to flow from this system can be optimised by using, in addition to the conventional cross section and longditudinal section, three new modes of presentation. The natural cross section is that section in space normal to a principal structure of interest. It is a section in which it is advisable to drill to obtain certain structural information, and in which the results need to be presented. A newly defined unique cross sectional orientational symbol is recommended for dramatic improvement in the quality of information presented in cross sections. Stacked level maps are a powerful adjunct to cross sections.

Methylene blue dye adsorbs on chalcopyrite concentrates slurried in aqueous solution. Saturation adsorption can be achieved within about 24 hours for dye equilibrium concentrations greater than about 10-5 M. The dsorption coverage is obtained from a measurement of the' colour change of the solution. Comparison with BET measurement of the concentrate surface area shows that 2.4 ± 0.1 µmol of methylene blue are adsorbed per square metre of surface accessible to the dye cation. The procedure described can be used as a single-point measurement and values for the surface area can be otained to within about 10 per cent with inexpensive instrumentation.

Pseudoclastic hydrothermal alteration textures occur within quenched coherent dykes forming part of a subaqueous dome complex (~4 Ma) onPonza Island, Italy. These textures are similar to those observed in considerably older (~500 Ma) subaqueous volcanic rocks at a number of localities throughout the Mount Read Volcanics in Tasmania and elsewhere in ancient volcanic sequences of this type in Australia. This is significant because the processes of formation, hydrothermal alteration and secondary mineralisation of ancient volcanic sequences may be better understood if we can make comparisons with modern analogues. Observations at Ponza imply that these pseudoclastic alteration features form synvolcanically or immediately after dyke emplacement and lava extrusion. This is compatible with scenarios presented for their formation in ancient sequences in the Mount Read Volcanics, Tasmania.

There are many technologies available today in terms of fire and life safety in road tunnels. So many in fact that it is becoming more and more difficult for clients and contractors alike to determine what they want and what they need. From a clientÆs perspective, fire and life safety is about protection to its infrastructure and to the public at large. Conversely, the contractor is looking to meet its æfit for purposeÆ or ædeem to complyÆ requirements in the most economic and practicable way. Practices regarding fire and life safety in road tunnels have undergone a degree of transformation during the last decade or more throughout the world. This transformation has largely been driven by a series of catastrophic accidents such as the major fires in Europe including the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Tauern Tunnel, Saint-Gothard Tunnel, and now most recently in the CityLink Tunnels in Melbourne. International guidelines produced by organisations such as the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses (PIARC), the European Union, the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) and the US National Fire Protection Authority (NFPA) now provide clients, owners and designers with the tools required to define and specify the required fire and life safety systems in road tunnels. The majority of these tools are based on risk assessment and risk management. Recent road tunnel projects within Australia, however, have not referred solely to such guidelines. Clients have opted to prescribe different or additional fire and life safety requirements within the projectÆs technical specification documentation (project requirements), leaving designers and contractors with little room to implement alternatives or substitutions. Further, these project requirements are largely dictated by practice established on previous road tunnel projects within Australia. This paper looks at the current international guidelines and practices and undertakes a comparison with the EastLink tunnels in Melbourne and other road tunnels within Australia and makes assessment on whether Australian methods are the most appropriate for clients and contractors alike. Focus is directed to the key elements of fire and life safety such as:traffic envelope, barrier arrangements and emergency walkway provisions;deluge systems;drainage systems;fire rating requirements;tunnel ventilation systems;cross passage provisions;fire safety assessment;critical intelligence systems including help phones, CCTV, incident detection, tunnel signage, etc; andexternal tunnel control systems.

The Main Seam occurs in two 'pods', termed North and South, separated by an east-west oriented 'want' zone (most probably a palaeo-channel). The seam on either side of the 'want' area reaches thicknesses of over 30 metres but the North Main Seam adjacent to the 'want' zone has been split into multiple seams of 10 to 15 m thickness. Rock types in the inter-burden of this area are characterised by inter-bedded sandstones and carbonaceous mudstones varying in thickness from 0.5 to 5 m. In the South Main Seam, an area of un-split coal exists and is characterised by few inorganic partings. Overburden in this area varies geographically from relatively thick mudstones in the south and east part of the coal deposit to inter-bedded sandstones and carbonaceous mudstones adjacent to the 'want' area. The sandstone/mudstone overburden probably represents a splay or splay-channel complex emanating from the larger 'want' area palaeo-channel. Modelling lithological variability is of use because it is one of the factors used in predicting cavability and roof support system design. The coal in both the north and south deposits were found to exhibit highly predictable quality and breakage parameters in relation to the coal geometry. Although ash yield and sulphur are mostly low and not variable, volatile matter and thus fixed carbon, varied in relation to seam thickness. In general, volatile matter (dat) decreased and moisture increased with decreasing seam thickness whereas moisture increased with decreasing seam thickness. In addition to these parameters it was found that the energy needed to crush the coal was lowest at the top and bottom of the seam and, on a whole seam basis, decreased with seam thickness. All of these parameters were found to vary in relation to the vitrain band content of the coal which itself was controlled by seam geometry. These parameters can therefore be modelled and inputted into mining plans and quality control operations.

The limit of pressure to which an underground dam may with safety be subjected, is a question that-as far as the writer knows has not received the same attention from authorities on engineering construction, or practical mining, that has been accorded to questions on which the design and strength of other structures or machines in connection with a mine are based. That dams may, under certain conditions, be constructed to resist water under great pressure is a known fact. But the difficulty of demonstrating beforehand that any proposed structure of this kind will withstand the pressure and be effective is, owing to the indeterminate nature of some of the risks to be provided against, very great. In the present state of our knowledge it may almost be laid down as a rule, that a dam of this kind should not be undertaken where grave consequences would attend failure until experience of structures where the physical conditions are similar, but where there are no such risks, has given assurance that such work would stand.In Mines and Minerals for May, 1900, there is published a paper by Mr. James McNaughton describing the construction of three underground dams in the iron mining district of Michigan.The first of these was put in to hold back a flow of 750 gallons per minute, which when pent up created a pressure of 276 pounds per square inch, showing that the height of the sustained column was about 635 ·feet. The hole through which the water issued was in the bottom of the cross cut it was enlarged by removing all loose rock for a depth of 18 ft...

Golden Cross is a volcanic-hosted, low-sulfidation, epithermal Au-Ag deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield. Irrespective of the rock type (andesite versus dacite), hydrothermally altered wallrocks are enriched in K, Rb, As and Sb around Au-Ag mineralised veins of the Empire vein system and stockwork. Sodium and Sr are strongly depleted around these veins, whereas Mg and Fe are locally depleted. Calcium and Si display mixed behaviour, varying from unchanged to depleted to enriched. Other elements including Al, Ti, Mn, Zr, Y, and Nb show little change or are immobile during hydrothermal alteration. Element enrichment and depletion trends are directly related to the degree of alteration and the alteration mineralogy. Addition of K and Rb and converse loss of Na and Sr in intensely altered wallrock surrounding veins corresponds to the replacement of igneous plagioclase by hydrothermal adularia. Sodium and Sr occur in moderately altered rocks on the margins or in æhard barsÆ that contain plagioclase. Locally, elevated Si concentrations and depletion of Mg adjacent to the Empire vein system reflects intense silicification of the wallrocks and the replacement of mafic minerals by quartz rather than by chlorite. The geochemical zonation patterns at Golden Cross are very similar to those at the McLaughlin deposit California, and shallow levels of the active Broadlands Ohaaki geothermal system. Therefore, determination of K, Na, Rb, Sr, and Ca enrichment and depletion patterns provides insight into alteration intensity and mineralogy that is complimentary to traditional trace element analysis of As, Sb, Hg, Au, Ag, Zn, and Pb used in the exploration of shallow level (< 500 m) epithermal Au-Ag deposits.

Granulation of iron ore fines into robust granules is critical to successful sintering and blast furnace operations in iron and steelmaking. Iron and steelmakers desire iron ore granules with high strength, uniform size distribution and low fuel consumption to enhance efficient sintering operation. Unlike hematite ore, magnetite concentrates do not granulate easily at low binder dosage to yield coarser granules due to the absence of nucleus particles. This motivates the present study to harness the complementary properties of hematite ore to enhance granulation of magnetite concentrates via blending. The current state-of-the-art in hematite and magnetite blend granulation is reviewed, along with granule property limitations. While there is no specific obligation on the part of any applicant to consult directly with tangata whenua (people of the land), recent cases highlight the need to engage in active consultation in order to avoid serious objections and delay, particularly where a proposal may affect the matters referred to in section 6(e) (Waahi tapu/sacred places) and 7(a) (KaitiakitangaiGuardianship) of the RMA.   The Environment Court has shown some sympathy for tangata whenua where waahi tapu and other significant matters of cultural concern are at risk because of a proposed development. There are several practical steps that can be taken to minimise the potential for serious objection including: ò knowing who to contact and how to contact them; ò demonstrating empathy for the concerns of tangata whenua; ò engaging in proactive consultation, for example meeting at a time and a place that is suitable to tangata whenua, and a preparedness to meet the costs of tangata whenua etc; ò demonstrate an awareness of tangata whenua issues; being aware of the types of mechanisms that are available to remedy, avoid etc adverse effects on matters of concern to tangata whenua.
