The design of entrainment control processes in copper SX plants has been studied by use of models based on achievable plant performance. A number of alternatives have been assessed for their suitability in minimising the transfer of deleterious species from PLS into the electrolyte. The position of the wash (scrub) stage in the circuit, either before or after the loaded organic tank, has been the subject of considerable debate. The modelling shows that at ænormalÆ entrainment levels, the performance of the circuits are very similar. However at high entrainment levels the selection of the wash after the loaded organic storage has significantly lower transfer of contaminants. When considering the inclusion of a loaded organic coalescer the results of the modelling again show that the best circuit has the loaded organic storage/coalescer before the wash stage. The overall control of EW contaminants includes both a wash stage and an EW bleed flow. The total water use for these two flows is shown to go through an absolute minimum. The minimum flow rate is not greatly dependant on the total entrainment from the SX settlers. This can be a useful operating strategy if the quantity of high quality water for make up is limited by the capacity of the water treatment plant (eg RO). However the minimum cost option is to maximise the flow of water to the wash stage and minimise the EW bleed stream. The main driver for this is the cost of the cobalt sulphate contained in the electrolyte. Some results from the latest circuit modifications at the Nifty and Girilambone Copper Projects are presented to confirm the benefits of using both coalescing systems and a wash stage. The EW bleed has been reduced to a level that is less than the loss internally in the SX stage to stage entrainment. There has been an occasional need to add chloride to the EW to maintain sufficient concentration to act as a growth modifier.

Coal winning in the Latrobe Valley exceeds 45 mtpa uses a small number of Bucket Wheel Excavators and high speed conveyor systems. While this equipment offers many advantages in the production cycle, incorrect use can lead to low productivity and risks to the safety of the operators and equipment. The mining equipment is of high capital value and easily damaged when used outside the correct operating range. In the extreme case, this can result in total machine collapse, having major implications for personnel safety as well as production and costs. With an active productivity improvement program in the Latrobe Valley in the last two years resulting in a 50 per cent reduction of personnel, many experienced operators have retired. Mine management are facing the urgent need to rapidly train new operators to maintain high productivity levels and reduce the risk of accidents to personnel and high capital cost plant. With the assistance of the Central Gippsland College of TAFE a Certificate Level course has been developed for open cut operators. The course covers all essential training needs for the Latrobe Valley mines. The training is developed from National Competency Standards, allowing transfer of skills, and is flexible to suit other enterprises. It has been written for self-paced learning with the total job understanding, and to have competency-based learning outcomes, training tasks and assessments built-in to modules. With the introduction of this new training program, management is convinced that the element of risk within the mine will be significantly reduced. For these reasons it is an ideal training model for other enterprises.

The Manantial Espejo district (Argentina) hosts a low-sulfidation epithermal Ag (-Au) deposit with a proven and probable reserve of 38 Moz Ag and 0.55 Moz Au. The district lies along the southern rim of the Deseado Massif in the Middle to Late Jurassic Chon Aike Province, a large bimodal igneous province dominated by silicic volcanic rocks that were formed during the initial extension leading to the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean. The district stratigraphy consists of 162 to 161 Ma old rhyodacitic to rhyolitic volcaniclastic rocks of the Chon Aike and La Matilde Formations, followed by 160 to 157 Ma old andesites and dacites of the informally called intermediate formation. The main stage of normal faulting post-dates the volcanic activity and coincides with the formation of the precious metal veins that were dated by 40Ar/39Ar on hydrothermal adularia with ages between 152.8 ¦ 0.8 Ma and 156.6 ¦ 0.8 Ma. Economically important hydrothermal veins show characteristic features of a low-sulfidation epithermal deposit with crustiform and colloform banding, bladed calcite replaced by quartz and abundant adularia. In the Maria Vein, the major orebody of the district, six hydrothermal stages are identified, but only stages one and four contributed metal. Lead isotope ratios in hydrothermal sulfides show a close relationship to ratios in feldspars from the district Chon Aike Formation, suggesting a common source for the Pb and possibly the precious metals in both the magmatic and hydrothermal products, or that the Pb in the hydrothermal veins was derived from the volcanic rocks. The nickel exploration boom of the late-1960s and early-1970s led to the discovery of numerous komatiite-hosted nickel sulphide deposits, associated with variably serpentinised bodies of olivine-rich cumulates. Subsequent research has shown the importance of volcanological processes to understanding the genesis of these deposits. Crucial developments have come through consideration of the fluid dynamics of magmas and magma-crystal mixtures, through observation of the dynamics and geometry of modern day basaltic lava flows, through application of theory and experimentation on the kinetics of crystal growth from magmas, and most importantly from extensive detailed field mapping of komatiitic sequences in the Yilgarn Block and elsewhere. From these studies has emerged a new integrated view of the volcanological setting of komatiite-hosted deposits, and a recognition that a complete continuum of deposit types exists. Nevertheless, komatiite associated magmatic nickel deposits generally fall into two overall types based on the nature of the sulphide ore. In the first type the bulk of the ore is either massive Fe-Ni-Cu sulphide or a variable mixture of massive sulphide and an ore characterised by olivine crystals in a continuous matrix of sulphide occupying between 30 and 75 per cent by volume of the rock (called Matrix Ore). Nickel grades of massive sulphide ore range from 2 - 20 wt% and those of the matrix ore generally fall in the range 1 - 5 wt% (average 2.5 wt%) Ni/Cu ratios of the sulphide fraction are generally >10.

The society in which we live is one of change, and we professionals are part of that society. The importance of this simple and obvious statement is often overlooked. My Presidential Address examines the question: can professionalism survive in our changing society?There is ample evidence to show that our society is changing, and that the rate of change is exponential. This rapid and accelerating rate of change is what Alvin Tomer refers to as "future shock". Rapid change means that we do not have time to become accustomed to what is happening around us and to feel comfortable with it; the greater the rate of change the greater the discomfort. The effect that this has on people is varied; the change may be either expected or totally unexpected.The rate and extent of change in society is not the same for all countries nor for all industries or occupations. Change is more rapid in Japan, Korea or Taiwan, than in Australia. It is more rapid in our cities than in the bush, more rapid for professional businessmen than for farmers. In our minerals and petroleum industries, we are still adjusting to the great changes that have taken place over the last fifteen years. In the past, products from our industries were sold on a free and open market. Today, mineral development and production in most undeveloped countries and some developed countries is manipulated for political, social and economic reasons. Changes of this nature have had a devastating effect on the operations of established mineral producers in the democracies.Because of the accelerating nature of change, we must recognise that the past is not a reliable guide to the future.Although extrapolation of the past into the future is a basic ingredient of commercial survival, extrapolation is less and less reliable.I borrow from others in quoting the Irish proverb: "The future is not what it was".The future is where our business lies and most of us at this Conference must endeavour to understand it and adjust to it. I believe in the old adage that:You can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been and where you are at.There are a number of major factors which have created change within our social, economic, and industrial environment in recent years.

For the last decade Australia has been the leading exporter of both steam and coking coal. In the ten-year period 1989 - 1998 steam coal exports increased by 93 per cent and metallurgical coal exports increased by 50 per cent. However, profitability of the steam coal sector has been disappointing. The coking coal sector, especially the hard coking coal segment, has fared better but its profitability was more because of its ability to maintain relatively high prices rather than its inherent productivity. Until quite recently the Australian coking coal sector was widely expected to be able to maintain this comfortable state without undue effort for the three major æpartnersÆ; the companies, the State Government and the unions. But coking coal could now be heading down the path followed by steam coal that ends with long-term over-supply and, despite steady improvements in productivity, poor profitability. Steam coal entered the ænewÆ era of long-term over-supply some years ago. Over-supply was due to the rapid increase in production in Indonesia, often from new mines and Australia. AustraliaÆs production rise was underlain by the apparent belief that the best way to lower costs was to increase production. In the first couple of years costs didnÆt fall much but the additional tonnage was sold at lower and lower prices into the spot market. By mid-1998 the difference between the contract price set with Japanese utilities and spot sales was often in excess of $US12 per tonne. Japanese contract prices and tonnages have since fallen significantly. Steam coal has moved from being a product to being a commodity. Any profits are due more to the low Australian dollar rather than inherent mine productivity. Seaborne coking coal trade has been dominated by Australia, Canada and the USA, with the USA becoming less competitive. Unfortunately, when the Queensland capacity expansion was well down the pipeline, the Asian financial crisis occurred and the Japanese economy entered what appears to be a long-term recession. Contract prices fell 18 per cent, tonnages decreased and some mines have been reclassified as supplying lower priced coking coal. The paper analyses past and expected future trends in labour and mine productivity, rail freight and FOB export port cash and total costs of the Australian steam coal and coking coal sectors and discusses the market outlook for Australia. The future economic viability of the industry is analysed and discussed in the light of the rapidly changing global environment.

A study was conducted to describe the microbiology of the MICCL Monywa chalcocite heap bioleaching operation. Microorganisms were detected in the heap using culture-based techniques and cultureindependent PCR-DGGE analysis of the 16S rRNA gene. The metabolic requirements, temperature and pH optima were determined for selected strains isolated from the heap material. Six strains (BH1-BH6) were enriched and isolated from heap solids and leachate samples. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA genes showed that strains BH3 and BH4 were closely related to the acidophilic bacterium Acidithiobacillus caldus and strains BH5 and BH6 were closely related to Leptospirillum ferriphilum. The optimum growth temperature for L. ferriphilum was 41.3¦C and the optimum pH range was 1.1 to 1.5. A new species of Archaea was isolated from the heap samples. Cells of the proposed species, Ferroplasma cyprexacervatum (æcyprusÆ L.n. meaning copper; æexacervoÆ L.v. meaning æto heap upÆ), are non-motile pleomorphic cocci, capable of chemomixotrophic growth with ferrous sulfate and yeast extract. Cells grow anaerobically on ferric iron in the presence of potassium tetrathionate and yeast extract as electron donors. Growth occurs from 14¦C to 63¦C, with an optimum temperature of 55.2¦C. The optimal pH for growth was 1.0 - 1.2. The species was phylogenetically most closely related to Ferroplasma acidiphilum with a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 95 per cent. Molecular analysis of mine samples (16S rRNA PCR-DGGE) detected the above-mentioned cultured strains of microorganisms as well as species of Sulfobacillus and other unknown Proteobacteria. The microbial community of the Myanmar bioleach heaps contained similar levels of diversity to a dump bioleach operation in Chile, but contained greater amounts of biomass than another heap bioleach operation in Australia. The operating parameters of the Myanmar heaps (low pH and moderate temperature) have selected for the growth of moderately thermophilic microorganisms that are more commonly found in extremely low pH acidic mine drainage sites than in heap systems. The novel species of Ferroplasma is thought to be involved in the aerobic and anaerobic cycling of iron within the heap bioleaching environment.

For the mining industry alone, this statement could indeed be interpreted by the many cynics in our community as an oxymoron; as miningÆs very existence requires the extraction and consumption of finite resources. However for the future of industry as a whole, the integration of mining, minerals processing and manufacturing presents us with a unique opportunity to achieve sustainability through the continued supply of metals and materials for society, in a manner which can achieve positive social outcomes through a triple bottom line approach.The Kwinana Industrial Area has been Western AustraliaÆs premier heavy industrial precinct for more than 40 years and its prevailing level of prosperity will ensure it remains a significant contributor to the State economy through the 21st century.The Kwinana industries depend on each other for the production of essential raw materials vital to their manufacturing and refining process, an innovation that also has significant environmental benefits.Formed in 1991, the Kwinana Industries Council strives to foster positive interaction between member companies and with the local community.The aims are:to co-ordinate the activities of Kwinana industries on a range of common issues; provide effective liaison with the local community; promote a positive image of Kwinana industries; highlight contributions to the community by Kwinana industries; and work towards the long-term viability of the Kwinana Industrial Area. P754 has been an unusual project in that its main aim was to develop a code of practice for metal accounting with the following key objectives:Development leading to an agreed industry standard at corporate governance level Significant improvement of the credibility of metal accounting from deposit to saleable product Development of guidelines for data collection, data analysis, reporting and audit A data analysis toolbox which provides go/no go testing for metal balance data Promotion of industry adoption of these guidelines to improve transparency and financial credibility. Over time, these guidelines may evolve into a code and eventually into a standard Develop and train engineers to become expert in metal balancing and reporting. Papers like this one and the workshop which follows this conference are part of promoting the code for adoption by industry. Developing a code of practice has traditionally been the provenance of professional bodies associated with particular industries û often on a voluntary basis. Given todayÆs industry pressures, it was felt that funding key input might accelerate the development process as well as offer opportunities to research some of the problems and to train some post graduate students in a difficult discipline. In fact, the project has brought together six industry sponsors from a wide range of process types, three research providers, and funded students in South Africa and Australia. The project has also attracted input from the financial community. A textbook to support the application of the code has also been written. The industry sponsors have made the Code and Guidelines available on request to help to facilitate its use by the mineral industry beyond the sponsor group. The Code and Guidelines have already been translated into Spanish and Portuguese which suggests that industry acceptance may happen quite quickly. The main thrust of the code is to integrate commercial and technical performance to a much higher degree. The Check in-Check out (CI-CO) method has been chosen as the vehicle for this combined approach. The mass and metal values used for CI-CO are 'absolute' and provide the basis of financial transfers. The CI-CO process occurs at each transfer of custody - whether between divisions within a company, or between companies. This approach means that measurement of mass and metal flows becomes the critical element of the process and that a quantitative knowledge of measurement accuracy and precision is also essential. This knowledge allows technical differentiation between differences which are within the expected margin of variation and those which must be formally identified as discrepancies and subject to a process of investigation and sign off. Hence, the application of the code for most companies should be more evolutionary than revolutionary, but with substantially more emphasis on measurement and definition of measurement error. Where this can be achieved, it should bring the mineral industry more into line with other industries competing for investment funds, community acceptance and future employees.

This address was delivered at the Annual Conference Presidential Dinner held in Sydney on 11 July 1988.The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy brings together, voluntarily, people with a professional interest in the disciplines and skills which are employed in the mineral industry, and in relation to that industry.We come together because we have a mutual interest in improving what is done by the mineral industry, in all its aspects. It is this sense of continuing improvement, of doing better, of doing as well as we can, as our knowledge and skills improve, that unites us in creating and fostering a professional association of likeminded people.We know from our professional training and experience that enormous progress has been made, at an ever-increasing rate, in the mineral industry, particularly this century. We know that the mineral industry has played a very major role in providing the means by which so many more people survive to live longer, healthier ,and more interesting lives, than ever before. Indeed, together with the oil and gas industry, which is an integral part of the mineral industry but has achieved its own commercial distinction, it is fair to claim that the mineral industry has played the major role in providing the means for the advancement of the human, quality of life.We do not need to make any great claims on human society in consequence of our statement of these contributions. The facts, for those who are aware of them, speak for themselves. Our more modest interest, as members of our professional association, is to look to the future, while conscious of our heritage as a guide to what more might be done, in that future.We certainly do not claim that this indisputable contribution made to human welfare by the mineral industry gives us some moral position of superiority from which to claim greater support or understanding from the wider community of people.On the other hand we know that as members of the mineral industry we have a responsibility to do what we can to help other people to be aware of, and to understand the significance of, those facts which will only speak for themselves if we take the trouble to make them known. And we have a number of organisations. The Institute itself, The Australian Mining Industry Council, the various State Chambers of Mines, the industrial relations body, The Australian Mines and Metals Association, and others, each of which in its own way endeavours to add strength to the individual efforts which we each should make.We may look at these facts about our mineral industry as simple dry statistics, even with their undoubtedly improving trends, or we can see them, and portray them to others, as expressing something which is much more. We can portray them as expressing the outcomes of our professional determination to strive to do better, whatever it i,s we find ourselves doing in this mineralindustry.We may seek to describe our efforts as being in pursuit of excellence, or by other such high-sounding phrases, but I prefer to describe those efforts as simply our strivings to make everything we do better next time-much as the dedicated golfer tries to do, but with, may I suggest, more evident success achieved in the mineral industry; which is one reason why I don't try to play golf.May I suggest to you that trying to do better, is very simply the true basis of professionalism? We are trained and practised to see the opportunity for improvement-not to be static in a world which we know is changing so rapidly in every aspect around us. We must be dynamic, which means optimistic, about improving the world in which we find ourselves.

Over the last 15 years the contract mining concept has developed into an integral part of the Australian mining industry. Today it is a $2 billion per annum industry with the potential to continue to grow at a rate of between ten and 20 per cent. Australian contract miners have also exported the concept overseas where growth prospects are unlimited. The industry today is at a cross-road where both contractors and mine owners must consider the current state of the contract mining industry and where it is heading. To look at the present and the future, it is necessary to look back at the history of contract mining and why it has developed. Current industry concerns can then be summarised and the areas that need to be considered to enable the industry to prosper, reviewed. The ultimate goal is to reach solutions with benefits to both the mining companies and the contractors.

The mechanism of flotation of potash ores with long chain primary amines has been assessed. Since at high electrolyte concentration in saturated brine the electrical double layers of the interacting particles and bubbles are entirely compressed, the induction time measurements confirmed the elimination of kinetic factors associated with the energy barriers opposing particle-to-bubble attachment under such conditions as could be expected. The lack of the kinetic hindrance resulted in the correlation found between the contact angles on the KCl surfaces and the sylvite flotation measured under the same physico-chemical conditions. The iep values and acid numbers obtained for various Esso oils tested as extenders in the flotation of coarse potash ore fractions confirmed the base oils with high content of nitrogen-bearing compounds to be good extender oils. The performance of such oils could further be improved by dissolving in them a small amount of long-chain aliphatic amine.

The Charters Towers 1:250 000 Gravity Data Set represents a new initiative of the Department of Resource Industries (DRI, formerly Queensland Department of Mines) to provide high quality regional gravity data over areas of the State that have high potential for new mineral discoveries. The Department has adopted a strategy to upgrade geophysical data to complement the ongoing Regional Geological Mapping Program (RGMP) of this Department and in areas where the data would be of most benefit to the mineral exploration industry. Part of this strategy is to ensure that these data are released within 6 months of data collection.The 1989 Charters Towers survey was completed as a joint project with the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (BMR), and is the first regional geophysical data acquisition project undertaken by the DRI. Prior to this survey, the only gravity data in this area dates from the B MR regional surveys carried out between 1960 and 1967.

Batu Hijau is a calc-alkaline, island arc porphyry copper-gold deposit located in the southwest corner of Sumbawa Island in the Banda archipelago of southern Indonesia. Proven and probable reserves are 913 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.53 per cent copper (10.631 billion pounds Cu) and 0.41 g/t gold (389 tonnes Au). Construction of the deposit infrastructure began in October 1996, and formal approval for the project mobilisation was granted by the Indonesian government in May 1997. Preoperational testing and start-up of the first grinding line is scheduled for mid-year 1999.Copper and gold mineralisation are genetically related to at least three tonalite porphyry dykes and small plugs which intrude a quartz diorite stock that was emplaced into andesitic to dacitic pyroclastic rocks and lava flows. Faults are uncommon, and where they occur they do not significantly displace hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation zones.

Advanced computer aided geological modelling techniques are now available to the geologist to allow the rapid evaluation of a gold orebody at various stages of its development. The types of grade estimation techniques used change during the various stages as the density of drilling and knowledge of the deposit increases. At the prospect evaluation stage drillhole intercept selection techniques are coupled with preliminary 2D (vein or layer) modelling or 3D block modelling techniques to arrive at a geological resource estimate. At the prefeasibility and feasibility stages more sophisticated 2D and 3D modelling techniques, such as domain controlled grade interpolation with anisotropy, are used along with interactive open pit and underground mine design, to calculate recoverable reserves. At the production stage closely spaced blasthole sample data is modelled quickly and coupled with interactive grade control facilities. Shot volumes, tonnages and grade estimates can be databased to provide reconciliation figures. These modelling techniques are embodied in MINEX-3D, an Australian software system which, with the emergence of the 386-based PC and high resolution (VGA or better) graphics, makes a whole range of advanced geological modelling techniques available to most exploration and mine geologists.

It is possible from simple gas behavioral theories to develop more complex relationships which allow prediction of transport phenomena such as diffusivity and viscosity of gas mixtures. Such physical data can be used in engineering calculations for both bulk gas movement and gaseous chemical species movement. Both of these are important in the solution of mines ventilation systems. There are specific limits of flammibili!'y of some common mines gases.

From a personal view that encompasses both research and assessment of major projects the author outlines the two competitive pressures that will force more rather than less metallurgy viz the increasing difficulty in purchasing the latest overseas developments and environmental concerns. This paper then goes on to argue that Australian metallurgy or more precisely process engineering may be in a unique position to deliver the required results.

Mond gas-producer tar, and, in fact, all tars obtained from the retorting of coal where steam and air are admitted to the retort, are of entirely different chemical composition to the ordinary coal tar made in the gas or coke works. These tars contain none of, the aromatic hydrocarbons - benzene, toluene, naphthalene, and anthracene, sought after by the ordinary coal-tar refiner.The distillation of Mond tar shows it to consist of phenols of high molecular weight, unsaturated hydrocarbons of high gravity and low viscosity, paraffin wax, and resinous substances of whose composition little is known.The physical properties of Mond producer tar are also peculiar. It has a "short," granular texture when cold, which might be likened to candied honey. It "dries" (hardens) when exposed in thin layers to the air, and, for a coal tar, it cannot be considered sticky. This latterò property, combined with the short texture, prevents its being used successfully for road-making or macadamizing.The drying properties and the paraffin wax contained in: this tar cause it to hold up large percentages of water, probably in the form of emulsion. When containing as much as 10% to 15% moisture it appears to be quite dry.

The underground coal mining industry in Australia has, in the last 30 years, undergone a revolution in production methods, techniques and results probably unparalleled elsewhere in the world. It can lay claim not only to leading the fight against pneumoconiosis and setting high safety standards generally, but has at the same time recorded comparatively high rates of increase in output per man shift. The latter has been achieved as a result of progressively matching the latest in production and underground transportation equipment with significant changes in seam development and extraction techniques and the introduction of stress-relieving extraction methods unique to the world scene. However, the seam recovery factor is still too low. Apart from the overall objectives of maximising production and commercial returns with the greatest safety, there must be a concentration towards maximising seam recovery, particularly in high seams. The search will continue for systems which are more completely continuous mining operations than the present stop-go operations, with longwall having long term potential in this regard, but as yet not sufficiently developed to engender confidence for its more general use. Techniques developed in the last 10 years make the development and extraction of deeper seams, perhaps to 2500 feet or more, feasible with continuous miners as well as longwall. The future will see a greater use of continuous shifts at mines, larger mines with more sophisticated management organisation, extensible belts at the face, better systems of immediate roof support at the face, remote operation of face equipment, greater use of roof bolts and the longer roof cables. With commercial confidence in coal mining now virtually assured to at least the turn of the century, the stage is set for heavy capital development in the industry which will undoubtedly include major research into the whole area of mining methods and equipment. We must ensure that our contribution to such research equitably matches other coal producing countries.

Decreasing the gas content in the worked seam by degassing before the start of winning has proven its worth in some areas of German hard coal mines. On the one hand, it removes the risk of gas/coal outbursts and on the other hand it reduces the gas inflow into the longwall. The underground experiences of the last 30 years have led to a æhit listÆ of coal seams with respect to their suitability to predegassing. Trials in the DMT laboratory and also results gained in the deposit show that the suitability of a seam for predegassing depends on its rank. In seams with volatile matter of 20 - 30 per cent, high efficiency ratings are achieved as a rule, with lower ratings both in seams with lower and with higher content of volatile matter.If the rock pressure is unusually high, the efficiency rating of the predegassing is lower, even in seams which would normally be suitable for this process. Under unfavourable conditions, for example below or above residual pillars, in-seam boreholes cannot be drilled successfully and the method is not practical. But if the worked seam was already stress relieved, the predegassing has an optimal efficiency. Latest investigations show that the distance between the in-seam boreholes can be extended. But in that case, the time necessary to reach the same reduction of the gas content increases considerably.
