The rapid crushing technique for the measurement of gas content of coal consists of accelerating the rate of gas desorption from coal by crushing. This technique allows the determination of gas content in the space of hours rather than days or weeks as required for the traditional slow desorption technique. The crushing technique is used particularly when gas content determinations are urgently required for mine safety purposes. The method is now routinely used in underground coal mines of NSW and to a lesser extent in QLD. Despite the rapidity and efficiency of this method, concerns have been raised upon the reliability of the method to deliver accurate results. Experience in Australia has shown that there is in fact some discrepancy in results between gas laboratories using the rapid crush technique. The development of rapid crushing techniques for seam gas content measurements in Australia and the main causes of variability in the gas content test results were investigated. The gas laboratories participating in the gas content testing were CSIRO Division of Coal and Energy, BHP Technical Services and GeoGas Pty. Ltd.

The adsorption mechanisms of various thiol collectors can be subdivided into four classes: chemisorption, EC-mechanism, catalytic oxidation and metathetical substitution. The chemisorption mechanism occurs at potentials below the thermodynamic potentials for the metal-thiol compound formation and is reversible. The EC-mechanism occurs when the mineral is sufficiently oxidised to liberate metal ions to form metal-xanthates; therefore, it is observed with more easily oxidisable minerals and/or with collectors having large pK values. Thionocarbamates adsorb on sulphide minerals via the EC-mechanism due to their large pK values. Although the adsorption occurs at very low potentials as compared to xanthates, it is irreversible with large overpotentials. On the other hand, the adsorption of modified thiophosphates and thiophosphinates occurs near the thermodynamic potentials because of the low pK values. The metathetical substitution is believed to occur only when a mineral is highly oxidised. These classifications are useful for studying the effects of electrochemical potentials and the molecular structure on the collector adsorption Mechanisms.

This paper is intended to help design engineers, operating staff and plant managers understand the principles of metallurgical gas handling systems design. It also explains operating, safety and energy savings issues that the designer should take into consideration in the design of process off-gas systems for sulfide smelters. Primary smelting reactors, converters, and other off-gas sources impose challenging duty requirements on the various components of the gas handling systems. This paper reviews the design of common system components including the hood for gas capture at the system inlet, gas conditioning, gas cleaning, ductwork, dampers, hot gas fans, and the appropriate use of instrumentation and controls. The engineer must also be aware of how ductwork system effects and heat losses influence system performance. Also, the analysis of a recently-designed gas handling system will be reviewed, which includes high-strength SO2 gas from a smelting reactor, asymmetrically located Peirce-Smith converters, and a gas mixing chamber to mix the gases before they are sent to two acid plants of different sizes.

Q.A.L. operates as a co-operative -- the partners do not draw profits from the venture. Instead, each member of the consortium draws alumina in proportion to his share of the ownership. The method of disposal of this alumina is for the partner to decide.

Over the last decade mineral exploration in New South Wales has increased markedly. This is due to various factors including the influx of overseas companies an. capital, increase and stabilization of metal prices and improvements in exploration techniques. The initiation of full-scale petroleum exploration and recent discoveries of large mineral deposits in the west, north-west and north of Australia has increased overseas capital, and brought scientists and technicians into the country. Naturally there has been an overflow into New South Wales, which is less attractive as an area for new and large-scale discoveries. In some fields, rise in metal prices and price stabilization has largely contributed to the intensif- ication of exploration. Increased tin production in New South Wales since 1963 is a direct result of price rise and stabilization, and rise in the price of silver has revived an interest in silver prospecting in recent Years,

CABS - Costs and Budget System - is being developed to provide more appropriate tools to assist cost control. The most important of these tools is responsibility accounting, that is to ensure the respons- ibility for costs and budgets is placed at the lowest possible managerial level in the Company. The system design and computer techniques utilized include the use of on-line facilities for enquiry purposes plus entry and validation of data. Data base management is used to permit the complex relationships that exist between data in CABS to be defined and maintained. The system must be flexible in order to cater for organisational and other maintenance changes with minimum time delays. The major outputs of the system are reports produced in several cost dissections, by responsibility, by products by cost collection group and type of expense. A significant role in CABS has been played by users. This includes development, control and review of the system proposals in order to ensure that the objectives and requirements from all sections in the Company are met. This role has included Project Leader for the system plus a committee formed to provide formal acceptance of the system Design.

A series of organoclays with different surfactant arrangements were prepared by ion exchange. The resulting organoclays were investigated using a combination of characterisation techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric measurement (TG) and N2 adsorption-desorption. In the present study, the pores within the organoclays were discussed on the basis of the micro- structural parameters, including BET-N2 surface area, pore volume, pore size, surfactant loading and distribution. The results show that both BET-N2 surface area and pore volume decrease from low to high packing density of the surfactant as the average pore size increases. Two basic organoclay models were proposed for hexadecyltrimethyl- ammonium bromide (HDTMAB) modified montmorillonites: 1. the surfactant mainly occupied the clay interlayer, and2. both the clay interlayer space and external surface were modified by surfactant. This study demonstrates that the pore structure of the resulting organoclays has a significant influence on the sorption efficiency and mechanism of p-nitrophenol onto the organoclays.

Blasting effectiveness must be gauged by total production costs. ANFO charges made up in polythene "sausages" are not as profitable as is indicated by the price of ANFO. All-slurry charges are warranted only where blastholes cannot be dewatered effectively, or where drilling costs are very high. An increase in blasthole diameter leads to coarser fragmentation. This effect is most pronounced in tough and massive or blocky strata, or in ground which consists of unfissured boulders in a softer matrix. When ANFO and some slurry-type charges of small diameter are used in plastic-acting ground, charges may fail to detonate through precompression by charges fired on an earlier delay. The optimum blasthole length is rarely less than four times the burden distance. For best results, blastholes should be inclined to the vertical and parallel to the face. Nominal burdens and spacings are often altered radically by the initiation sequence. For best fragmentation, all blastholes must have good effective faces, and should be effectively stagg- ered with an actual spacing:burden ratio in the approximate range 2.0-5.0.

The media in Australia is currently rife with articles and pronouncements on global warming as the most significant crisis of our time, which may æthreaten the future of civilisation as we know itÆ. This has been recently reinforced by release of Al GoreÆs film æAn Inconvenient TruthÆ, and one would be led to believe that the science of global warming is settled. And yet there is a strong body of literature disputing this apparent consensus which suggests that care should be exercised in introducing radical policies to solve a crisis which may not be real. Such policies would have a major impact on those in professions such as engineering (project approvals and design to minimise greenhouse gas emissions), accounting (carbon tax issues) and the law (corporate disputes on greenhouse gas issues are already in train in the USA). This paper addresses the hysteria apparent in the climate change debate by presenting factual evidence relating to climate change and the current phase of mild global warming. Some of the more extreme statements on future impacts are repudiated with published data, and alternatives to the purported role of fossil fuels in temperature change are offered. The potential impact of political decisions on professional activity is discussed, as are the implications of a possible future reversal of the scientific consensus, as has occurred in the past. The paper concludes with a call for the professions to exercise their Learned Society role to ensure that a rational and public debate is held on the broad issue of climate change.

It is a great privilege to be invited to give this address at this centenary conference. A centenary is a time for recollection, for celebration and for looking ahead. The AusIMM has much to celebrate and many things to recall. I hope in this address to make some useful comments about Australia's future (and mindful of but not forgetting New Zealand), looking ahead for 25 years or so, and the mining industry's role in that future.

Surface geological observations are predominantly two-dimensional but can be expanded into three dimensions using geophysical techniques. These techniques have proved succ- essful in the past and will be utilised more frequently in future mineral exploration. Geophysical training establishments must recog- nize future requirements and teach geophysics as part of a broad earth science course as well as a specialised geophysical course. Central- isation of teaching skills, the use of high- technology in the classroom, and greater interaction between academic and industry staff are recommended as a means of ensuring a vibrant geophysical training base in Australia, for the geophysicist of the future.

The traditional method of scale-up uses the population-balance model. In particular, the selection function values for a material are determined in a laboratory mill and a variety of correlations are used to scale these values to plant scale mills. For example, the factor D2-5L (D-mill diameter, L-mill length) appears in many power correlations. The number of collisions is proportional to the number of balls (aD2L), the frequency of mill rotation ((x 1/4D-) and effectiveness of impact ((XD), which gives rise to the 'D2.5L' expression. However, what is lacking in this expression is that it does not throw light on the intensities of collisions. In other words, the collision intensities in both laboratory and plant scale mills are implied to be identical. This fact has been very limiting. Alternatively, the collision frequencies and intensity of impacts can be computed with the discrete element code. This code computes the motion and collision of each individual ball in the ball charge. Therefore the number of collisions and the fraction of collisions in the energy range Et, E2.òòE. (collision energy density) are calculated for a given mill size and operating conditions. Then, using the breakage function determined in drop-weight experiments, the evolution of size distribution is computed for a lab mill. The collision frequency and energy density for larger mill sizes are shown. The fundamental theory outlined for the calculation of size distribution is equally applicable for the large mill, which is the basis for scale-up.

Recently, the Environmental Engineering Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa Research Organization has made signifi- cant progress in the development of more accurate algorithms for assessing heat flow in gold mines. These algorithms have been incor- porated into an overall computer program, ENVIRON, which enables the complete thermo- dynamic analyses of mine ventilation and cool- ing systems to be carried out. Recently, efforts have concentrated on the development of an expert computer system which will guide engineers in the process of selecting the most appropriate environmental control strategy.

Cordeaux Colliery is more logically sited than the historic escarpment Corrimal Colliery, on the same reserve. At Cordeaux the modernisation of mine plans and equipment and the introduction of high production longwalls have created a record achieving producer of both steelmaking and export coals.Further changes achieved have been in employee related attitudes and performance, enhanced by business strategies and total quality control and particularly benefiting from innovative employee input With this present example of co-operative effort Cordeaux Colliery will continue to improve through management of total quality. resources, development rates and customer satisfaction.

In 1993 after over 110 years of mining operations, production ceased at the Broken Hill North Mine. Following the cessation of operations a rehabilitation program was developed to satisfy the requirements of the various government departments. This program has been implemented progressively since mine closure. The paper will discuss: primary aims and objectives of the rehabilitation program, implementation of the program, rationale behind rehabilitation objectives, and problems encountered in implementation of the program. To-date the primary rehabilitation of the mine has involved the capping of redundant tailing dams with inert waste rock to prevent the contamination of the receiving environment. A Water Management Plan has been developed to contain all run-off from the mine area in an extreme storm event. A cultural heritage assessment of the leases has been undertaken to ensure the rehabilitation is consistent with the historical significance of the site and community expectations. All redundant material from the mine has been sold in a æno reserveÆ auction and the workshop area has been relocated to the Southern operations. At present the only active areas on the mine are a maintenance area for equipment for the Potosi open pit, and a primary crusher for Potosi ore which is railed to the Southern operations for further processing. Upon completion of the rehabilitation program, Pasminco Broken Hill Mine intends to relinquish the mining leases to the Department of Mineral Resources.

The cycle time between adjacent stopes is critical to achieving the required production rate from 3500 Orebody; one of the Enterprise Mine orebodies. Current Mt Isa cemented fills require a 90-day cure period which had to be cut to 30 days while maintaining the required strength criteria. The Enterprise Mine Feasibility Study recommended that this be achieved by Cemented Slurry Rock Fill (CSRF), but that on-going research into paste fill be continued. The continuation of the research, in conjunction with overseas visits has recommended that the 3500 Orebody be filled with paste fill, with the potential to fill other orebodies. The paste fill will comprise cyclone and thickener dewatered copper tailings to which Portland Cement (PC) is added before vertical borehole delivery and undergound pipeline reticulation to individual stopes. The benefit is not only re-use of copper tailings but also much reduced binder usage.

The paper describes the preparation of new rail guides, removing existing rails, and replacing with new rails in a vertical winding shaft.INTRODUCTIONThe general practice in coal winding shafts is the use of two cages, with one or more decks in which men and materials are raised or lowered. Winding speeds vary according to depth, the type of winding gear, and whether winding is done in downcast or upcast shafts. Each cage occupies a position between the centre and side of the shaft, with a clearance depending on the type of guides used. The function of the guides is to keep the cage in position throughout the entire depth of the shaft. There are three types of guides, two of which are in general use.1. Selected wood of about 6 in. square section, fixed to the side of buntons.2. Solid strand steel made up similarly to that of an ordinary wire rope, suspended from the head frame with weights attached to the lower end.3. Standard T-rail sections fixed to end or side buntons. Of the three types, 2 and 3 are in general use. The magnesite deposits near Young, N.S.W., occur in decomposed serpentine rock below a soil. and alluvial cover. They show considerable variation in both quality and depth which greatly hampers mining operations. Seismic refraction techniques afford methods of conducting detailed and reconnaissance surveys which yield a depth and velocity analysis of the serpentine/magnesite refractor. The measured seismic velocities may be used as an index of the presence and quality of the deposits. The Seismic Timer which was used in the test surveys is a simplified seismograph which makes use of seismic reciprocity by replacing the conventional seismic shotpoints with geophone stations and the conventional geophone stations with impact points of a sledge hammer. Thi,s enables the use of detailed seismic refraction techniques which yield the depth and velocity analysis of the refractor.INTRODUCTIONThe magnesite deposits near Young, N.S.W., were produced by a process of leaching and enrichment of magnesium in serpentine rock. The magnesite occurs in nodular form emplaced in decomposed rock at shallow depths below soil and alluvium. The depth ranges from close to the surface down to some tens of feet. The deposits are patchy and show considerable variation in both quality and depth, giving riseto considerable difficulties in mining operations.Due to the thorough leaching of the surface material, geochemical tests carried out so far have not proved satisfactory for locating the pockets of magnesite enrichment.It was decided to test the application of detailed shallow seismic refraction methods to the investigation of both the depth and quality of the deposits. Consistent slag blow end point detection remains one of the challenges in the Peirce-Smith converters at Mount Isa MinesÆ Copper Smelter. Under blowing results in foaming on copper blow and carry forward of oxide skims to the anode furnace. Over blowing results in high copper losses to the slag. Both present safety issues and contribute to lower copper production. The end points of the slag making phases are assessed by inspection of a bar sample. A bar sample is a thin accretion layer that adheres to a steel bar when it is inserted into the tuyere while the converter is blowing. This method is biased and subjective, so there is heavy reliance on operator experience. The Semtech Optical Process Control (OPC) system was installed in early 2002 for converter slag blow end point detection. Initial plant trials did not improve all aspects of converter operations, and uptake by operators was poor, so the system was not used. In early 2005, the Semtech OPC system was re-visited and another short trial was conducted to evaluate the permanent use of the system for slag and copper blow end point detection. During this trial, the Semtech OPC method was found to be superior to bar sampling for slag blow end point detection. The implementation and refurbishment of the Semtech OPC system has resulted in plant improvements and given a better insight into converter operation during blowing. Oxide skim generation carried forward to the anode furnace has been shown to decrease with increasing compliance with Semtech OPC. Some of the expected improvements to converter operation were not found to be significant. Semtech OPC is now well received and utilised by converter operators. Individual paper available only.
