The object of this paper is not to describe any particular type of engine in close technical detail but rather to give a general picture of past and present practice in this important section of the industry. The subject involves the study of almost 600 years of coal mining history which has fluctuated from stagnation to extremely rapid progress.Up to the year 1300, coal was obtained from outcrops and exposed beds, but this easily worked source soon gave out, so by that time shafts had to be sunk to the coal seams, and coal mining proper commenced its career.These early shafts were very shallow, and winding equipment was not a matter for much concern. Raising coal was generally achieved by human labour, which was called "coal bearing." Coal was loaded into baskets. strapped to a man's back, and carried from the underground workings to the pit bottom. The unfortunate individual then climbed ladders to the top of the shaft, unloaded the basket, and descended the shaft for the next load. Men, women and even children, were employed as the mine expanded, and were generally bound to the colliery for life, performing daily work which would now be regarded as slavery. This primitive method of raising coal to the surface was slow, inefficient and highly dangerous, yet for want of a better method it continued until in 1602 it isrecorded as having been abolished in Wales, one of England's great coal districts. As near-surface underground mines progress deeper, the inevitable question is whether to convert from truck haulage to shaft hoisting. The desire to defer capital expenditure frequently delays investigation of the shaft option, or deferral of a decision to start shaft sinking, unless the shaft option is clearly significantly better than trucking. By the time increasing depth makes trucking uneconomic, there may then be insufficient resource remaining to justify a shaft, and the mine must close. However, had the shaft been built earlier, its lower operating costs would have permitted the mine to continue to greater depths. This paper presents a methodology for investigating the shaft versus trucks decision. As well as the typical analysis of which option is preferable at the time the analysis is conducted, the process presented illustrates how the timing of the decision to sink a shaft is critical. The paper shows how to identify the latest date at which the decision to sink a shaft can be made, after which time the shaft option will not be economic. It also illustrates how to assess the resource that may be required to justify the shaft. Considering this in conjunction with the latest decision date, implications for the companyÆs exploration program are discussed.

It is difficult with inadvertent explosions to establish fundamental data, especially of original dust, of pressure, temperature etc. and of ventilation oscillations, as exposed personnel rarely survive. Retrospective data from explosions must be derived from damage, from fatalities, from ventilation analyses, from analyses of dusts and other indications of temp- erature and duration of temperature. The five disastrous explosions selected for analysis provide examples of what data can be established as to the cause and extent of explosions. Such information is required for legal etc., inquiries subsequent to explosions, but most importantly to give the best guidance for avoidance of possibility of further Disasters.

This study begins with the semivario- gram modelling of variables rutile grade and clay content from a beach sand rutile deposit. This is followed by two dimensional block kriging. The deposit was divided into blocks of 30 x 30 x 1.5 m dimensions and the kriged estimate together with the associated kriging variances for each variable within each block were determined. Finally, using the results of the krig- ing program and considering the acceptable limit of clay content together with the cutoff grade for rutile, a method for optimization of mineable thickness and hence the tonnage of ore was applied and the results were dis- Cussed.

My topic for today is the Crown Minerals of the future. New work initiatives are underway and the organisational structure is being overhauled. These are not insignificant changes and in this paper briefly summarises these proposals. These new work initiatives and changes to the organisational structure will have implications for the industry as a whole and also for the way individual clients interact with Crown Minerals.

Construction of the Ranger uranium project located 230 kiss east of Darwin in the Northern Territory commenced in January 1979. Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) was incorporated in February 1980 to acquire all the rights in the project. The total cost to ERA of these rights was $407 million, made up of $125 million in cash to the Federal Govern- ment and the issue of 125 million $1.00 shares at par, plus a payment of $16 million in cash to each of Peko-Wallsend Ltd (Peko) and EZ Industries Ltd (EZ).

The paper is introduced by some general comments on the Electrolytic Zinc Company West Coast Mines operations. An outline of the geology of the Rosebery Mine orebodies preced- es a resume of the mining methods used prior to the current mechanization programme. The reasons for the introduction of longhole stoping techniques are given together with a brief explanation of both sublevel longhole and longhole stoping methods. The application of remotely controlled loaders within these stoping methods is discussed. A description of the remote control mechanisms, used on Atlas Copco 310 and 511 Cavo loaders, is followed by comments on these mechanisms from both a maintenance and production viewpoint. A summary of perform- ance statistics and operator safety records vindicate the selection of remotely controlled loaders for the longhole stoping areas at Rosebery Mine.

The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) underground mine will be a 25 000 tpd mechanised block cave operation starting production in 2000. The ore handling system consists of a direct truck dumping 54 +74 gyratory crusher, which feeds into an ore bin. An apron feeder below the bin is used to load a conveyor belt. This paper describes the design, sequencing and methodology of the crusher station, ore bin and feeder chamber excavations. The Geotechnical investigation and analysis of the site are also discussed as well as the design, installation and quality control of the long-term ground support methods.

The zone gives a very characteristic curve on the electric and' gamma ray logs and is thus an excellent correlation marker in the sub-surface over a very wide area. It is probably to be correlated sith.the Toolebuc member described from: outcrops east of Boulia. There .are apparent similarities between the Fishecale zone of the Great Artesian Basin in' Australia and the Fishscale sand of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin.

The characterisation of the surface area and porosity of opals derived from Tintenbar, a volcanic environment, and Lightning Ridge, a sedimentary environment, using nitrogen gas adsorption at -196¦C is reported. Both opal types were found to have relatively low surface areas and displayed little porosity. The low surface areas observed is indicative of the ability of silica to infill voids and interstices. Thermogravimetric analysis of the samples before and after degassing was carried out to determine the amount of water removed by the degassing process. Negligible difference was found in the water content before and after degassing in the case of the Lightning Ridge sedimentary opal, while the Tintenbar volcanic opal was found to have lost more that 60 per cent of its water during the degassing process. These differences were ascribed to the differences in the silica structure of the opals with the Lightning Ridge opal having a denser cage structure, which traps the molecular water, while a more open structure is postulated for the Tintenbar opal, allowing the water to be relatively easily removed.

This paper provides an overview of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling capability developed by CSIRO with the aim of improving the knowledge of flow migration dynamics within longwall goaf areas. The CFD models can be used to study the ingress of oxygen into the goaf in different ventilation scenarios and goaf drainage arrangements. This approach not only helps the design of effective gas control strategies but also the management of spontaneous combustion risk in the goaf. Innovative goaf inertisation strategies have been developed and implemented during longwall sealing operations. Work is continuing to develop general guidelines of proactive goaf inertisation strategies to suppress the development of spontaneous heating behind active longwall faces.

Rock bolting provides a supplement or alternative to conventional timber and steel supports. The tensile strength of the bolts lies within a range established by manufacturing quality control. Rock bolt testing determines the ability of the rock, anchor and individual bolt as an assembly to accept load. The.test is performed to the yield strength of the bolt or anchor and deflection is observed. The anchorage index, inches deflection per 1000 lb load increment, is a measure of anchorage quality. This allows comparison with anchorages under ideal conditions. It also permits comparative assessment of roof bolt anchors in a particular environment.

The role of the group is to facilitate the environmentally responsible development of these industries for the benefit of Victorians. It has a wide range of contacts with other government agencies, local government and community groups.The paper is in three parts; firstly, an overview of the nature and contribution of the mining and extractive industries in Victoria; secondly, the industries' regulatory framework; and thirdly, the environmental issues facing the industries and the management of these issues.

This paper describes the technique developed by the Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories (ACIRL) for the treatment of bore core samples to obtain data for coal preparation studies of the target reserves. The particle size distribution within the sample has a significant influence on the relationship between the yield and ash per cent of the floats coal at any ash level. The size analysis within the reconstituted feed from a coal preparation plant is determined by the size analysis of the feed coal, physical degradation of material in the process, and the breakdown of associated shales in water. The extent of material breakdown was studied in the ACIRL coal preparation pilot plants. The method of bore core evaluation includes simulation of this breakdown in a sample selectively crushed to conform with predicted or known run-of-mine size distribution. Modifications have also been made to the laboratory methods for froth flotation to approximate more closely with industrial practice.

The removal of sulfur from SO2 containing flue gas is improved by adsorbing SO2 into solution with manganese ions as catalyser, however, burnt lime slurry has to be added to modify solution pH and the CaSO3 by-product is of low economic value. In this paper a novel one step process for simultaneous manganese leaching-desulfurisation of flue gas is presented. An investigation of the effect of process parameters included flow rate and SO2 concentration in flue gas, adsorbing time, solution to solid mass ratio, leaching time, and their impact on the oxidation and removal of SO2 from flue gas. The catalysing mechanism of manganese ions on the oxidation and SO2 removal was demonstrated by calculation of the species originating from manganese ions and SO2 in the solution according to solution chemistry. SO2 removal in the adsorbing solution took place at pH 5 - 6, where manganese ions dominantly occurred as Mn2+, and the chain reactions for oxidation of SO2 starting from HSO3- were improved by the presence of Mn2+. SO2 bearing flue gas was effectively desulfurised by leaching rhodochrosite (MnCO3), with desulfurisation of the flue gas and modifying the solution pH being achieved simultaneously, and MnSO4 of high economic value recovered from the leachate. 85 per cent manganese leaching and over 70 per cent desulfurisation of the SO2-bearing flue gas were achieved with only one adsorption stage under optimum conditions.

Solvent extraction of cobalt from an ammoniacal ammonium sulphate medium was carried out using Di(2-Ethyl Hexyl) phosphoric acid in kerosene as diluent. The effect of ammonium chloride and ammonium sulphate on the extraction efficiency was studied. The extracted species in the ammonium chloride and sulphate systems were CoAz2HA.NH4CI and CoA3.HA.2(NH4)2SO4, respectively. Ammonia scrubbing and cobalt stripping studies were carried out from loaded and ammonia free organic Respectively.

The application of high pressure water jet technology to the drilling of longholes in coal has resulted in the development of a system currently capable of drilling to lengths greater than 200m. Field tests at the German Creek Mine have demonstrated directional control of the holes within a 0.5m section of the seam. Initial application of the technique at the German Creek operations is for drilling methane drainage holes. At the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, impurities toxic to the electrolytic production of zinc metal, notably arsenic and antimony, have traditionally been coprecipitated when precipitating iron as ferric hydroxide. With the development of a new lead/zinc mine at Elura, New South Wales, it was anticipated that the concentration of impurities, particularly arsenic, in the zinc sulphide concentrates treated at Risdon would increase. This suggested that an increase in the capacity of the iron purification step in the Risdon plant would be required to cope with the higher input of these impurities.Laboratory investigations showed that the additional capacity would be achieved, either by a large increase in the amount of iron used as the "collector" in the process, or by a two-stage process. The latter approach was preferred as a increase in the amount of iron precipitated would lead to much higher operating costs and overloading of the existing equipment.In the two stage procedure, acidic iron bearing solution is added to solution feeding the first stage and most of the arsenic removed from solution when iron is precipitated from solution by neutralisation with limestone. Mter separation of the precipitated solids, acidic iron bearing solution is added to the solution, and remaining arsenic removed almost completely following neutralisation by limestone.This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant results and the plant modifications required. Abrief account is also given of the operator training and acceptance in the use of the digital control facilities installed in the new plant.The new plant is working well and good solution purity is being maintained despite a substantial increase in the concentration of impurities in the raw materials.

Unnamed early prospectors panned gold from creeks drain- ing the Great Dividing Range in the early part of 1851. The first publicised discovery was credited to Edward Hargraves near Bathurst in New South Wales later in 1851 and during the ensu- ing gold rush, prospectors rapidly made discoveries elsewhere in New South Wales and later across the border in Victoria. Reference to the attached graphs of gold production indicates that for much of the first 100 years, gold production came from the easily worked and readily discovered shallow alluvial deposits, many of which were located in the creeks draining mountainous regions of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland (Fig. 1 and 2). As these deposits were exhausted, prospectors turned their attention to outcrop lode deposits which led to the development of underground mining techniques and a significant boost in over- all gold production. With the discovery of the rich Golden Mile lodes in Kalgoorlie in 1893, gold production increased signifi- cantly and peaked around the turn of the century. At that time, the enormous potential of the great Witwatersrand deposits in South Africa had only just been appreciated and for a few years, Australia led the world in gold production (1855-1863 and again in 1903). Underground mining continued in the Eastern Goldfields area of Western Australia, the Bendigo-Ballarat region of Victoria and in northeast Queensland. Very few of these operations continued beyond the Second World War, except the larger producers in the Kalgoorlie region where recovered grade had dropped to about 6 g/t Au. By the early 1970s with the gold price fixed at US$35 per ounce, most of the operations were shut down as labour costs escalated, with only the low cost bulk mining operation at Mt. Charlotte and the high grade reefs at Norseman continuing in Production.

The compact BWE system set up in 1984 to mine ironsand dunes and the underlying ironsand-clay has been an effective high volume produc- tion unit for New Zealand Steel Mining Ltd at the Waikato North Head ironsand mine. The system utilising two compact S400E (0 & K) Bucket Wheel Exca- vators and a single shared Beltwagon for transfer to the shiftable bench conveyors replaced a fleet of mobile elevating scrapers when the produc- tion requirement was increased by a factor of six. A key factor in favour of the BWE system was the economic advan- tages of low unit costs for both manpower and electrical energy.
