Sample sizing in the iron ore industry requires significant manual effort to collect, transport, and sieve the samples as well as record, process and report the data. Efforts have been made to automate this process, which essentially emulate the manual process, except that a person is replaced by a robot. Even in these cells, the sieving and sizing operation consumes a significant proportion of robot time. The proposed doubling of production from AustraliaÆs iron ore mines over the next five years will place increasing pressure on sample sizing and interest is increasing in alternative automated methods. One such method is the adaptation of computer vision technology which has been successfully introduced into the mining industry in a range of applications including feed size distribution to SAG mills and oversize detection from screening stations. The limitation of this technology is that only the top surface is visible and this is used as an indicator of total size distribution. Obviously in a sample plant, where 100 per cent of the sample must be measured for acceptable quality assurance, this approach is unacceptable. In order to capture 100 per cent of the sample using computer vision technology a monolayer must be formed either by spreading the sample across a moving surface, such as a conveyor or vibrating platform, and passing this under a camera. This will become a æsurgingÆ load which presents specific problems for some types of computer vision systems, namely those relying on a 2D approach. In this paper a 3D computer vision technology will be described which overcomes the problems associated with measuring particle size in a monolayer and experimental results will be presented which demonstrate its effectiveness for lump and fine iron ore sample size measurement.

Minerals similar to the indicator minerals used in kimberlite exploration are widespread in the Cainozoic alkali basalts of north Queensland. Magnesian ilmenite, pyrope garnet, chrome diopside, chrome spinel, phlogopite and zircon were recovered from most of the localities examined. The occurrence of these minerals creates significant problems when indicator minerals are used for diamond exploration. Basaltic ilmenite is visually similar to kimberlitic ilmenite. Untransported grains are rounded and have pitted surfaces. Basaltic ilmenite grains often have exsolution lamellae and reaction rims of titanomagnetite. Although kimberlitic and basaltic ilmenite are chemically similar, basaltic ilmenite grains are usually less magnesian than their kimberlitic counterparts. Basaltic ilmenite contains very little Cr203. Pyrope garnet occurs as megacrysts and in a variety of xenolith lithologies in north Queensland basalts. Most basaltic garnet is Cr-poor and comparable with kimberlitic garnet from Groups 3 and 5 of Dawson and Stephens (1975). Wine-purple, chrome-bearing garnet is common in kimberlite but rare in basalt.

Base metal sulfides at the Currawong volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposit in the Lachlan fold belt of Victoria, south-east Australia, were formed in the late Silurian, but D2 deformation of the deposit in the Devonian Bindian orogeny was responsible for structural repetition that created the resource. The primary sulfide lenses were stacked by reverse-sense shear zones within a volcano-sedimentary sequence dominated by dacitic intrusions and turbidites. Shear zones were localised along lithological contacts, including the margins of the sulfide lenses. The competent dacitic intrusions did not fold during D2; folding was restricted to the packages of metasedimentary rocks. Overturning occurs within, but not between, the metasedimentary packages. The overall geometry of the deposit is that of a duplex, but the detailed shape does not conform to idealised duplex types, probably because of post-D2 deformation. A significant complicating factor for understanding the deposit, and for resource evaluation, is the dramatic variation in deposit geometry along strike, which may also be due to post-D2 deformation. The present day configuration of the deposit results from constructive thrust repetition of what may have been a single ore lens and destructive along-strike disruption controlled by rheology.CITATION:Blenkinsop, T G, Macklin, D and Hammond, R, 2015. In feasibility studies the choice of optimum cut-off grade is typically based on an evaluation of tonnage grade curves and manual design of stopes at one or two cut-off grades. In the industry these stope designs are usually based on break-even cut-off grades, but there is little consensus on what cost and price assumptions ought to be included. A new tool for automated stope design has been developed that generates sets of stope shapes for a nominated range of cut-off grades, or depending on the nature of the mineralisation, cut-off values based on net smelter return calculations in the block model. The stope design procedure includes constraints in stope and pillar geometry for the selected mining method and can be used to evaluate sublevel interval and sensitivities to other design parameters in the specific geological and geotechnical environment. These ænested stopesÆ are analogous to ænested pitsÆ in open cut design, and can be used as a key input in the æhill of valueÆ methodology for the evaluation of the optimum cut-off grade in underground design. The results of many consulting studies indicate that a break-even cut-off grade will not be the optimum cut-off grade. A particular benefit of the new stope design tool is that the design rules used to establish stope shapes in the feasibility study can then be used in mine production, in an optimal and repeatable method. This methodology is being advanced in the AMIRA P884 PRIMO project, which is a new research collaboration coordinated by AMIRA International. The project has brought together active research groups in Australia and Canada, with the goal of developing a flexible framework and set of software tools for optimisation in underground mine design.

ICI Australia and CSIRO have developed a novel process for extraction of zirconia from zircon sands. The two stage process involves a high temperature step and a wet chemical processing step. A pilot plant has been operating since November 1985 at CSIRO Division of Mineral Chemistry, Port Melbourne and construction of a full scale plant isplanned at Kwinana, WA.The plant has a high degree of flexibility and is capable of producing high purity zirconia up to about 99.99% and withinspecific particle size ranges. The products are being marketed by the joint company, 2-TECH Pty Ltd.

China has at least 200 collieries suffering from the problem of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Strong outbursts often have occurred in geological tectonic zones and concentrated stress areas. There are some particular characteristics of these strong outbursts, including the effects of ground stress, gas pressure and the properties of coal associated with the outbursts.

Numerical modelling is an effective aid for the planning and design of underground coal mines. With funding from the National Energy Research Development and Demonstration Program, CSIRO Division of Geomechanics has produced a workstation environment which will allow the Australian Coal Mining Industry access to a wide range of numerical design models. The emphasis is on usability and simplicity and the long-term aim is that the techniques should be used routinely at the mine site, so that, in the future, design of a new underground mine will routinely involve modelling of each proposed layout.Each of the five numerical analysis programs, FESOFt, FLAC, MNLAY, FEBLK and UDEC has both strengths and weaknesses. Some analyses with each program demonstrate areas when; observed in situ behaviour in underground coal mines has been successfully modelled, and the results of site monitoring provide a basis for comparison with the predictions of numerical models.

In 1974 a preliminary study of the refractories industry in theRepublic of Indonesia was completed by Crown Lynn Consultants, a subsidiary of Cerarnco Ltd., on behalf of the Indonesian and New Zealand Governments. As a result of recommendations arising from that study the two Governments commissioned, in 1976, as a Bilateral Assistance project, an investigation into the potential of the refractories industry in Indonesia. Ceramco Ltd., was retained to carry out the study on behalf of the New Zealand Government. The Directorate-General of Chemical Industries, Directorate of Silicate Industries administered the project on behalf of the Indonesian Government. Indonesian counterparts to the New Zealand study team were provided by the Directorate of Silicate Industries.

In tunnel construction or other underground construction, a detailed knowledge of the rock mass ahead of the face is essential for both safety and efficiency of work. Many tunnel collapses have been reported to occur because of lack of appropriate information, such as the geological conditions ahead of the tunnel face. One of the methods which can identify rock mass conditions is the application of drill monitoring data obtained from blasting drill holes, which can detect abrupt and unexpected changes in ground conditions, geological structure and the mechanical and physical properties of rock mass. This paper presents a new approach to how drill performance parameters can be used for prediction of geological conditions ahead of tunnel face. The predictions are based on monitoring the drill parameters of instantaneous advance speed, torque and tool pressure. In order to assess conditions ahead of tunnel face, tunnel seismic profiling (TSP) and a horizontal boring investigation were undertaken and the obtained data compared to the drilling data. The predicted results using drilling performance parameters correlated well with geological conditions ahead of tunnel face.

The level of wire rope technology used in mine hoisting applications has a significant effect on the overall efficiency of the hoisting system. This paper discusses the effect that a reduction in rope mass per unit length and an increase in rope breaking strength can have on rock skip capacity and hence mine shaft output. A 20 per cent reduction in rope mass per metre for a typical 48 mm hoisting rope, while maintaining the breaking strength, increases the skipÆs capacity by circa 30 per cent at a suspended rope length of 3000 m. Such gains in shaft output, without any significant changes to the shaft or winder design, can have major implications for the feasibility of future deep mine projects. The technical challenge for rope manufacturers is how to get rid of 20 to 30 per cent of the rope mass while keeping the breaking strength and modulus of elasticity of the whole rope constant. CASAR are currently developing steel wire rope constructions where the steel IWRC has been replaced with high strength, high modulus fibres such as Kevlar«, Spectra« and Dyneema«. One of the key aspects of such composite rope designs is to ensure equal load sharing between the different rope components, ie in proportion to their area. If there is a significant difference in modulus between the fibre core and the steel outer strands, the core may not carry its proper proportion of the load and the outer strands would be overloaded. Some technical aspects of the design of composite steel wire ropes are discussed. A design and operational issue that needs careful consideration is the safe non destructive testing (NDT) of composite ropes. Traditional magnetic NDT would only be capable of inspecting the steel wires. Techniques therefore need to be developed that would give operators a reliable indication of the condition of the load bearing fibre core. This paper also discusses possible solutions to this very important NDT question.

pNumerical modelling has been used to examine the relationship between the results of two commonly used methods of assessing the propensity of coal to spontaneous combustion, the R70 and Relative Ignition Temperature tests, and the likely behaviour in situ. The criticality of various parameters has been examined and a method of utilising critical self-heating parameters has been developed. This study shows that on their own, the laboratory test results do not provide a reliable guide to in situ behaviour but can be used in combination to considerably increase the ability to predict spontaneous combustion behaviour./p

Outokumpu Harjavalta Metals Oy has been producing nickel since 1962, based on conventional flash smelting technology followed by electrowinning of nickel. In the 1980s, a research project was initiated to develop a converterless direct smelting process to produce matte for further refining in the then existing refinery. The process was tested on a pilot plant scale at Outokumpu's research centre in Pori and was found to be viable. The process was named the Direct Outokumpu Nickel Smelting Process or the DON Process. At the turn of the 1990s, Outokumpu studied various options to develop its nickel business and the Harjavalta operations. As a result of this work, the DON Process was further developed to produce two mattes: low iron matte in the flash furnace to be leached in the existing leaching circuit and high iron matte in the electric furnace to be leached in the new leaching circuit. In Harjavalta's case, it was essential and important that the process could use the existing flash furnace and electric furnace without converters.

The expense of mine environmental and planning process approvals is a fundamental and proper part of mine planning and feasibility costs. It is not a cost that should be the subject of challenge nor is it a cost that should be avoided. However the additional process approval costs incurred by bureaucratic delay, process duplication and administrative incompetence is a scandal and a deterrent to investment.

Acid rock drainage (ARD) derived from sulphide oxidation and the associated metal leaching is the most significant environmental issue facing the mining industry today. Under given hydrological and biogeochemical conditions, the local geology and mineralogy largely control the formation of ARD. The involvement of a geologist is therefore essential in minesite ARD assessment and prevention. The relevant tasks that a mine geologist may undertake at three major phases of a mining project are briefly described. Additional knowledge that a mine geologist should acquire in order to achieve proficiency in ARD assessment is also suggested.

The three main types of iron ore deposits in Australia are bedded, massive and residual. Some character- istics of iron ore, important in its process behaviour, are related to its mineralogy which is a result of its geological history. World iron ore resources are extremely large but there are problems in quantifying re- serves, defined as that part of re- sources from which a useable commodity can be extracted economically. The relationship between the discovery and exploitation of iron ore resources and the process of industrialization is examined in historical and present day contexts.
