A detailed study of the capital investment and production cost for copper electrowinning plants shows that significant savings in both can be achieved by increasing the current density. From the economic analysis it is determined that the optimum current density which will result in lowest capital investment and lowest operating cost is between 60 A/sq. ft. and 70 A/sq. ft., or at least three times as high as the Conventionally employed current density. The specific investment, expressed as $/ton-year, is found to be a function of both the current density and plant capacity and has a minimum value at the optimum current density. Empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the capital investment and operating cost for plants of any production capacity operating at any current density.

A review is presented of developments in mill liners to improve performance in terms of wear, impact, as well as mill grind and throughput. These developments are in response to the growth in size of SAG mills and the use of larger ball loadings and ball sizes in modern SAG milling practice. Shell liner developments include specific mechanical design features such as special bolting, directed metal flow to prolong liner life and a focus on the process aspects of the mills to provide more effective grinding motion with reduced wasteful ball-on-liner impacts. Grate design developments aim to provide high throughput of material, especially in the larger size fractions, while providing good impact and wear life. Curved pulp lifters are designed to ensure, at high mill speeds, complete discharge of coarse solids from the mill.

The Kevitsa Ni-Cu-PGE deposit in northern Finland contains disseminated Ni-Cu-Fe sulfides, and platinum-group minerals (PGM). The 2.05 Ga-old ultramafic-mafic, funnel-shaped intrusion is intruded into a volcanosedimentary sequence. The major ore minerals are pentlandite, hexagonal pyrrhotite and troilite, chalcopyrite, cubanite and magnetite. Pyrrhotite and pentlandite are replaced by pyrite, millerite and heazelwoodite near the surface. Nickeline, maucherite and gersdorffite are locally abundant. A pilot feed sample of 575 t of the main orebody at Kevitsa had average grades 0.45 per cent Cu, 0.36 per cent Ni, 1.85 per cent S, 0.33 g/t Pt, 0.34 g/t Pd and 0.19 g/t Au, with 0.06 per cent Ni contained in silicates. Higher PGE contents (2 - 27 ppm) occur in a vertical N-S bearing fault zone. The PGM (n = 6022) mapped in specimens of four drill holes, consist of sperrylite 34.7 vol per cent, braggite and cooperite 18.5 vol per cent, geversite 17.2 vol per cent, moncheite 14.7 vol per cent, merenskyite 6.7 vol per cent, stibiopalladinite 4.3 vol per cent, sobolevskite 1.9 vol per cent, kotulskite 0.7 vol per cent, michenerite 0.6 vol per cent, keithconnite 0.3 vol per cent, rustenburgite 0.1 vol per cent, melonite, froodite, laurite together 0.1 vol per cent and only a few grains of sudburyite, irarsite, vysotskite, erlichmanite, hongishiite, Pt-Cu-alloys, three undefined Pd and Pt bismuthinides and antimonides and a Pd-Cu-bearing Pt-Ni-Fe sulfide. Most of the PGM, 62 per cent, are enclosed in silicates, 29 per cent are intergrown with sulfides, nine per cent are within sulfides. A portion of the PGE occurs in solid solution in sulfides and arsenides. Ni flotation yielded smelter-grade concentrates averaging 12.2 per cent nickel. The average sulfide Ni recovery is 78.8 per cent and total Ni recovery is 65.3 per cent. The average Pt is 10 g/t at 55 per cent recovery, Pd 7.7 g/t at 38 per cent recovery and Au 1.6 g/t at ten per cent recovery. Cu concentrates averaged 28.6 per cent Cu with an average recovery of 78 per cent and further 11 per cent in the nickel concentrate. The copper concentrate contains 4 g/t Au at 24 per cent recovery. The average Fe to MgO ratio 17.9 is well above the targeted minimum of 4.5. The pilot results show that the previously used TETA (triethylene tetramine) can be avoided and good quality, smelter-grade concentrates can be produced from the Kevitsa ore at economical levels of recovery by conventional flotation methods.

WHILE in the employ of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters and the Electrolytic Zinc Oompanies at their South Melbourne Research Station, the writer was detailed to investigate the principles underlying the Parkes Process with a view of determining:1. The Interdependence of the variables:(a) Quantity of zinc required per charge,(b) Temperature of stirring of each zincing,(c) Silver content of the bullion after first zinculg,(d) Silver content of the bullion after second zincing,(e) Silver grade of the crusts produced for retorting, with reference to the method of working the Parkes Process then in operation at Port Pirie.2. The possibility of effecting improvements in the Port Pirie practice of desilverising, especially with respect to:(a) Silver grade of the crusts produced for retorting.(b) Quantity of zinc required per charge.The method of desilverising in practice at Port Pirie was a two-stage zincing.In both zincings the bullion was cooled to its solidification temperature and the silver crusts which separated from the lead were completely removed.The crusts from the first zincing were retorted, and the crusts from the second zincing were returned to the first zincing of the next charge.

Since the Eocene, New Guinea tectonics have been driven largely by the south-westerly-directed collision of accreted arc terranes with the northern margin of the Australian Craton, and subsequent westerly-directed transport of these exotic terranes by left-lateral strike-slip fault systems. The subduction of the Solomon Sea plate beneath north-eastern New Guinea in the mid- to late-Miocene led to magmatism and related gold-copper porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Maramuni arc and the formation of the Frieda River, Nena, Wafi-Golpu and other deposits.The development of the world-class porphyry and epithermal deposits in the Medial New Guinea magmatic belt, including Grasberg, Ok Tedi and Porgera, is localised by dilational zones formed about the intersections of north-easterly-trending, reactivated basement faults and north-dipping reverse faults related to the southward progression of the Papuan fold belt during the Late Miocene to Pleistocene. These deposits probably formed during short mantle-derived magmatic episodes in zones of regional isostatic uplift, which are attributed to the delamination of the lithospheric mantle beneath New Guinea.CITATION:Garwin, S L, 2015. This paper introduces a new coal-based rotary kiln process of DRI production - the CRIMM process, which is developed by Changsha Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in the past years. Its main features are the use of composite pellets (in rotary kiln). The process consists of preparation of pellets from iron concentrate and coating of coal on their surfaces. The new process is able to overcome a series of defects of the conventional coal-based rotary kiln processes. A continuous test was conducted using an experiment rotary kiln (-0.6;, x 3 m). TFe of the magnetic iron concentrate used in the test is 67.25 per cent. TFe of the product DRI is 88.54 per cent, MFe is 84.11 per cent, S and P are less than 0.02 per cent. The metallisation ratio of pellet is 95 per cent. The pellet power ratio is less than 0.3 per cent. The utilisation coefficient of rotary kiln is 1.3 t/m'-d. The overall recovery of iron concentrates is 99.7 per cent. Two small industrial plants using the CRIMM process are being set up in China. Their coal consumption can be decreased to 520 kg standard coal per ton DRI respectively.

The Newcrest Mining Limited Cadia East Panel Cave mines near Orange, New South Wales, Australia commenced production 1200 m below the surface in May 2014. Understanding the mine-wide impact caving had on excavation stability was a primary objective to ensure a safe working environment as production ramped up in the Panel Cave 1 operation and establishment activities were implemented in Panel Cave 2. The impact of cave interaction between Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 and establishing monitoring systems to assist mine planning and production as both caves joined is explained in this paper. Monitoring tools such as a microseismic system, open holes, HI-cells, extensometers, fibre optic sensing, cave markers, closure monitoring, underground observations and damage mapping were used to characterise the performance and position of the cave back. The data and observations collected were compared to predictions from numerical and empirical methods and used to calibrate the numerical models for forward prediction and to develop site empirical design tools. This paper describes an apparatus which was developed to study solid-vapour equilibria and presents results which were obtained during a study of the FeCI3-AlCI3-CI2 system. Analysis of the results showsthat fractional desublimation might offer a means of achieving a useful separation of the iron and aluminium chlorides produced by the chlorination of bauxite. The results, presented in the form of isothermal vapour pressure curves covering the range of temperature 160-200°C, support the earlier findings of Semenenko et al (Dokl Akad Nauk SSSR, 154: 42-43 (1964)) that the solid phase contains two terminal solid solutions.The equilibrium constant for the formation of the mixed dimer, FeAICI6, was approximately 4. The latent heat of sublimation of aluminium chloride varied from 18 to 26 kcal/mole AI2CI6 for solid compositionsfrom 0.9 to 0·5 mole fraction FeCls3.

A pilot steel ladle injection facility designed to assist in the production of high quality steels suitable for use in pipelines has been built and commissioned at the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) plant at Port Kembla Works.The plant design and the injection procedure are described.The performance of the unit and some metallurgical results are discussed in terms of the addition to the steel ladle of various quantities of calcium silicide and a lime based material. The effects of these additions on sulphur content and inclusion morphology and hence on steel ductility are also presented. The influence of ladle lining on desulphurisation is illustrated.On the basis of the experience gathered in the pilot plant a permanent and more sophisticated injection facility has been designed.

A new lead refinery with a capacity of 230,000 tons per year commenced operation at Port Pirie in October, 1959. This plant superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of the continuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content createddifficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was undertaken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic zinc is recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is carried out by batch treatment with caustic soda yielding lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes replace continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. The final stage is a batch process; therefore the product composition can be checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to consumer's specification.Improved casting equipment allows the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs.This, together with the high purity of the lead, assures the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.) position in world markets.Automatic control systems are extensively employed, particularly on the vacuum dezincing unit.The anticipated financial benefits have been achieved mainly by a reduction in the tonnage of recirculated materials, a smaller labour force, and reduced maintenance requirements.INTRODUCTIONIn December 1956 a decision was made to build at Port Pirie a lead refinery on a completely new site, and in October 1959 the new refinery was brought into operation. Rhyolitic rocks are volumetrically significant in the eastern part of the Coromandel gold province, yet deposits hosted by rhyolite (Kapowai, Broken Hills, Neavesville, Wharekirauponga and Waihi Beach) are generally low grade and subeconomic, especially compared with andesite-hosted deposits. In contrast, rhyolitic volcanic centres in Nevada host a number of economically significant epithermal gold deposits such as Round Mountain, Sleeper and Bullfrog. The Nevada deposits are associated with 27-20 Ma continental arc volcanics dominated by ignimbrites (eg Round Mountain), or younger 17-9 Ma bimodal rhyolite-basalt volcanism related to extensional basin-and-range tectonics (eg Sleeper). The Round Mountain deposit is localised on a caldera boundary fault and the mineralisation was deposited soon after eruption of the host rhyodacitic ignimbrite. In other Nevada deposits, hydrothermal systems are linked to the closing stages of flow-dome complexes and mineralisation is localised along normal faults associated with extensional basin-and-range tectonism. The style and composition of the mineralisation is similar in both the Coromandel and Nevada deposits and consists of sheeted and stockwork quartz veins, containing electrum as the main ore mineral and only minor sulphides (mainly pyrite) Likewise, the vein minerals were deposited from low salinity hydrothermal fluids in the temperature range of 200-270¦C. Both the Neavesville and Round Mountain deposits are geochemically anomalous in molybdenum. The deep oxidation of the Nevada gold deposits, dry climate and low level of competing land uses combine to make it economic to mine and process very low grade ore (0.2 - 2.0 g/t Au) by heap-leaching with cyanide solutions in most areas of Nevada. Although extensive low grade gold mineralisation is known at deposits such as Wharekirauponga and Neavesville, it is sub-economic because of shallow oxidation and land use conditions that are unfavourable for open pit mining and heap leaching.

IN 1904-5 diamond drilling operations in the Mount Morgan mine proved the presence of some inillioils of tons of rich, copper-gold ore, averaging about 45% to 50% silica and 22%Fe as sulphide. To smelt this ore in blast furnaces, without previous concentration, large quantities of basic flux.were required. Unlimited quantities of cheap, limestone, were available at Marmor, on the GladstoneRockhampton railway, 50 miles from Mount Morgan, but the supply of iron flux was a more difficult problem. Smelting operations started, with one' furnace in January, 1906, using as flux low-grade sulphide ore fro:m. the mine, containing very little silica. When the second, furnace was blown in this was supplemented by ironstone from, small aeposits in the immediate district. It was recognized that these sources of supply would be insufficient to keep the full plant going after the third furnace had been blown in. Accordingly, the deposits at Eabra and Mount Etna were opened, neither of which proved capable of supplying the quantity required viz, 1000 tons per week. Negotiations were meanwhile being conducted with the Marble Island Iron and Limestone Co. to obtain the right to mine at Iron Island, where a sufficiently large deposit was known to exist. A study of the accessory opaque iron-titanium oxide minerals of the Oiles Complex, central Australia, was an Important complement to an investigation of the magnetic properties of the Complex. These minerals constitute no more than 10 per cent of the rocks sampled, and generally less than 1 per cent of the ultramafic rocks ("magnetite" concentrations were not sampled for magnetic investigation).Titanomagnetite is the main opaque mineral present, although ilmenite exsolution has been widely developed. High-temperature oxidation of these produced mainly titanohematite, pseudobrookite and rutile. Both exsolution and high-temperature oxidation developed along specific crystallographic directions (along {111}), and in Irregular patches. Low-temperature oxidation is generally not well-developed, indicating the small degree of weathering in the rocks sampled.Although the Oiles Complex is layered, no apparent overall preferred orientation of the iron-titanium oxide minerals was observed, other than crystallographically controlled alignment of very fine grains within pyroxene crystals. Other textural features of the opaque oxides are restricted to symplectic intergrowths mainly with the ferromagnesian silicates.

Perhaps one of the most important conferences or symposia which our Institute has conducted, was the joint Aus. LM.M./AJ.M.E. meeting held in Canberra in May 1978, with the theme International Resource Management (Woodcock, 1978).We were privileged to witness active participation in the meeting by outstanding personalities from the mining and metallurgical industries of Australia and New Zealand, the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom and to hear addresses on subjects of international significance to the mining and metallurgical industries.Our Institute is one concerned with professionalism.The principal objects of The Institute as described by our founders include, "promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of those in the industries, by meetings for social intercourse, and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications amongst its members and associates, the information thus obtained".Sir Maurice Mawby (1968) said in his Presidential Address to the Institite, "the most important aspect of these objects was the promotion of the arts and sciences of the mining industry".Why is it then, that a large proportion of the papers given at the meeting in Canberra dealt with world wide social aspects of the mining and metallurgical industries, rather than the technology, the arts and sciences of mining and metallurgy as principal factors in international resource management?The answer is quite simple of course, and that is that the social and political factors are the principal factors which create the demand for basic raw materials and in the long term determine the costs and prices of the commodities which our professional abilities are drawn upon to produce.

The stability of a raise bore is often assessed using the rock mass classification system published by McCracken and Stacey as a modification of the Q system. Often the assessment is done using a spreadsheet to manipulate geotechnical log(s) of boreholes. This paper discusses the inherent difficulties with this approach. Recent work by others to provide guidelines to the classification system is discussed. A recent example of the design and raise bore performance at Macraes Gold Mine, New Zealand is presented. A key issue is that a visual assessment of the drill core and/or core photographs is necessary to æground-truthÆ the classification.

During the past two years, a large number of creep tests has been carried out on electrolytic lead, special assay lead and ordinary refined (Port Pirie) lead. Some of these tests have already been reported.1§ In addition, an attempt has been made to estimate the influence of the individual elements present in small traces in Port Pirie lead. The present paper gives the results obtained when small additions are made to "U" lead of the composition shown in Table 1.(which has been used throughout these investigations during the past few years). The additions were silver, antimony, bismuth and zinc. The results of the addition of tellurium have already been communicated. This investigation was intended to run parallel with a similar one using electrolytic lead as a basis and adding one element at a time.Actually, the experiments using "U" lead have got rather ahead of the others. The important point has emerged, however, that the effect of a .given addition may be appreciably influenced by the presence of traces of other elements.In most of these tests, an initial stress of 500lb. per sq. in. has been used. Whilst it is fully appreciated that this stress is higher than those used in practice, it has to be borne in mind that an improvement in creep resistance was *Manuscript received December 11th, 1936.

Alluvial gold was found in the Terawhiti area, West of Wellington, in the 1850s. This led to the discovery of reef gold. Periods of minor 'gold fever', company flotations, and mining activity occured between 1869 - 1973, 1881 - 1986, and in the late 1880s, with one final company active in 1911 - 1914. 1n the early 1980s, further field work was carried out. No viable mining operations resulted from any of this activity.

The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) Mine is one of the future underground mines of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). Located in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, the GBC mine is scheduled to start production in 2017 reaching its peak production capacity of 160 000 t/d in 2023.In order to reach planned production capacity, the GBC mine will utilise an ore handling system consisting of rail haulage, crushing and conveying. The rail haulage system will utilise over 20 km of track while crushing is accomplished by way of three gyratory crushers each with a capacity of 3300 t/h. Nine conveyors operating in two parallel systems, each system over 3 km in length, will move the ore from the crushers to the stockpiles. These systems require a network of larger tunnels and mass excavations to accommodate the planned production facilities.This paper will describe the ore handling system, tunnel and mass excavation methodology as well as some of the challenges encountered with ground conditions and excavation quality during the execution of the project. A combination of lateral and vertical development methodologies and equipment, including drill jumbos, mechanised raise climbers and specialised ground support equipment, have proven successful in the development of a quality ore handling system.CITATION:Pasek, I, Firdausi, H and Chenier, T, 2016.
