A basic question in preparing this review was how to define sulphur mineral occurrences as being associated with the Pacific Rim. This question will be reconsidered later. The isotope composition of sulphur- containing minerals may be considered in terms of two primary sources - 1. deep- seated sulphur, devoid of crustal contam- ination with a 634S value near 00/0o and 2. oceanic sulphate which fluctuated in value between +10 and +300/00 over geological time (Claypool et al., 1980). However, minerals have seldom been directly derived from these primary sources as even evaporites have been dissolved and reprecipitated. The marine source is differentiated biochemically and isotopically in recent sediments where sulphide from bacterial sulphate reduction may be significantly depleted in 31S. The question of chemical interaction of ascend- ing magma with upper crustal rocks has become one of degree rather than whether or not it occurs. Mineral deposition is considered increasingly in terms of mixing of fluids and their chemical reactions with rocks rather than direct precipitation from magmas or hydrothermal fluids derived from them.

Laboratory high tension roll separation and the commercial machines available for this purpose are discussed. The shortcomings of these machines are indicated and a machine that overcomes some of these undesirable character- istics is described. A procedure for evaluating laboratory high tension roll separation is described. The use of this evaluation procedure in conjunction with the laboratory separation is described with examples taken from the Dunwich and Hexham processing plants of Associated Minerals Consolidated Limited. Evidence that laboratory testwork results may be directly transposed to operating plants is given. A discussion of the effects of variables in high tension roll separation of mineral sand concentrates concludes the paper, and uses in support results obtained in the metallurgical laboratories of Associated Minerals Consolidated Limited, Southport, Queensland.

Attempt has been made to determine the nature of charge on activated carbon surface by studying the electro-kinetic properties of the carbon in the presence of cations, anions and aurocyanide solutions. The zeta-potential measurements were made in the presence of individual ions and also in combinations. The cations and anions chosen were those commonly associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area. It was found that the iso-electric point of Norit Carbon was at pH 4.45; below this pH the charge was positive, while above, it was negative. In the absence of gold cyanide solutions and in the presence of individual cations the i.e.p. shifted to the alkaline range (pH 7.2-8.5) while in the presence of anions the i.e.p. was shifted to less than pH 3.5. In the presence of aurocyanide solutions, the iso-electric point was still in the acid region irrespective of whether anions or cations were present. The probable mechanism for such a behaviour has been attempted after measuring the specific conductivities of solutions before and after gold adsorption, by studies using the electron- probe-mirco-analyser, and S.E.M. on the carbon surface.

Middle-to-Late Proterozoic stratigraphy and metallogeny in the eastern part of the Canadian Cordillera and in South Australia are strikingly similar. In both areas, thick, predominantly shallow-water strata and their contained mineral deposits can be divided into three sequences (A, B, C) that record episodic and prolonged continental rifting. It is proposed that Adelaidean strata of Australia were deposited adjacent to Belt-Purcell, Mackenzie Mountains and Windermere strata of the Canadian Cordillera within an epicontinental trough of a "Hudsonia" regacontinent. With the final rifting of this trough, the paleo-Pacific ocean was born. By Early Cambrian time, Australia- Antarctica was on the trailing "east" side of the nascent megacontinent, Gondwana, and was being modified on the "west" by accretion in the Pan-African event. North America, more or less surrounded by trailing edges at this time, was analogous to the Cenozoic African plate. This hypothesis accommodates the available paleomagnetic and radiometric data. It has implications for pre-Pangean plate tectonics, paleogeography, and the predictive metallogeny of both areas.

Rock mass classification systems for stable excavation design have been studied. The parameters which are important in such a classification system and those which should be included in a classification system formulated to predict explosive fragmentation behaviour are briefly reviewed and compared. There is significant overlap in the data requirements for excavation design and explosive blast de- sign. Recently there has been a trend to ob- tain some of the data required for excavation design by the use of both field and laboratory seismic investigations. The theory of seismic techniques is summarised and the results of seismic investigations carried out for excava- tion design are reviewed. On this basis it is considered that seismic techniques have the potential to be used for data collection prior to blast design. A programme designed to de- velop such techniques and which includes both field and laboratory experimentation is Presented.

The problem of production scheduling is sufficiently complex to negate the use of many conventional optimising techniques as there are numerous and diverse factors that must be considered when trying to produce an optimal schedule. These factors include: grade distribution, orebody geometry, production rate capacity, processing constraints and market price of the minerals amongst a variety of others. In addition it may be observed that many of these factors incorporate a degree of uncertainty and any schedule produced must inevitably consider risk as a primary consideration. The very nature of the problem has limited the use of conventional optimisers. Genetic algorithms use methods based upon evolution and natural selection to produce `optimal' solutions to complex system problems. They are extremely flexible and robust in their nature and it is these characteristics that are important in this particular problem domain. A particular strength of the genetic optimisation approach is the ability to handle the multiple and non-linear constraints that are typically encountered in mine scheduling problems. This paper concentrates on the development of a prototype application of a genetic algorithm to the problem of scheduling the output from multiple production points in an underground mining operation. In particular it.describes a system (GO-SCHED) that can be customised to handle a wide variety of underground scheduling problems. GO-SCHED, a Windows-based system, can interface with a variety of databases and spreadsheets for data input and output and provides a simple intuitive approach to the solution of the scheduling problem.

Narrow vein tabular orebodies are prone to mining induced seismicity. The Tasmania Mine is a complex example of a seismically active tabular orebody, where the contrasting material properties of the host strata and of the orebody itself, serve to exacerbate the seismic response. Analysis of a continuous record of seismicity over a period of seven years has provided significant insight into the fundamental mechanics of the rock mass. Understanding seismicity to permit safe extraction of the orebody has been enhanced by instrumentation of rock mass behaviour in response to mining and mining induced seismicity. It is the purpose of this paper to explore that understanding in respect to the adoption of an alternative down-hole Avoca stoping method for use in particular circumstances.Intensive instrumentation of the Tasmania Mine over a period of four years has provided insight into the behaviour of the rock mass in response to extraction of the narrow vein orebody it encompasses. A range of instruments have been installed in clusters or single installations in order to measure changing stress conditions and the impact of those changes on the rock mass and the reinforcement system.Instruments are often installed in very close proximity to active production stoping. While it has been possible to observe the impact of the mining and mining induced seismicity at very close quarters, instruments installed in these locations are vulnerable to damage and consequently, the level of instrumentation is high. Instruments are continuously logged, typically on a six hourly basis coinciding with the end of regular blasting times. The response of the instrumentation to changed rock mass conditions is considered against the background of development and production blasting and against the seismic record to assess the viability of downhole Avoca stoping.CITATION:Hills, P B and Walton, R J, 2012. The application of new and currently practised mining techniques in new areas and at greater depths necessitates considerable and immediate research effort. This effort is aimed at identifying the factors which make a particular method suitable and economically viable in a given geological, structural and operational environment. These factors, together with greatly enhanced knowledge of a deposit at the exploration and planning stage, allow selection of the most appropriate and efficient mining method in a new area such that coal resource recovery is maximised in a cost effective manner. Current research and future requirements for research into mining methods and associated equipment and mine services are reviewed.

A wide variety of copper-bearing gold ores exist throughout the world which have yet to be processed economically for gold recovery. The copper minerals present in these ores can be many and varied and usually result in high cyanide consumptions and problematical levels of copper in leach solutions. The copper content is often assessed as being of nuisance value as the ores are generally of the grade or type which can support neither a copper project nor a straight gold project, due to the interference of copper. Many of these problematical gold-copper ores could possibly be processed economically for gold recovery using a novel ammoniacal cyanide leaching system which utilises a copper-ammonia-cyanide complex as an effective lixiviant for gold, yet limits copper dissolution and conserves cyanide. Results from recent testing have promoted a re-evaluation of the economics of treating some gold-copper ores. This paper describes the novel leaching process and discusses the conditions employed to treat a variety of gold-copper ores.

Mssissippi Valley-type (MVT) and sedimentary-exhalative (SEDEX) zinc-lead deposits represent about half to three-quarters of the world's production and reserves of lead and zinc. The two deposit-types have traditionally been regarded as separate entities in terms of genesis largely because they possess very different morphologies, resulting from the epigenetic nature of MVT deposits and the syngenetic origin of SEDEX deposits. Similarities in regional setting, metal ratios, size and grade, lead and sulphur isotopes, and source(s) of fluids and metals in the two deposit-types, however, suggest that they could be products of similar genetic processes. The physical properties of MVT ore fluids suggest that certain types of SEDEX deposits could have been formed from fluids possessing similar salinities and temperatures. The hypothesis is further strengthened by the facts that: 1. in several cases MVT and SEDEX mineralisation occurs in the same region, and 2. recent advances in establishing the timing of MVT mineralisation has revealed that some MVT deposits are contemporaneous with nearby SEDEX deposits. If MVT and SEDEX zinc-lead deposits do indeed share a common ultimate derivation from fluids that emanated from sedimentary basins, then the presence of one deposit-type in a region could be used to infer the possible presence of undetected deposits of the other type. Furthermore, knowledge of the mineralisation age of one type will constrain the exploration target host rocks of the other type. A genetic relationship between MVT and SEDEX mineralisation may also explain why certain individual deposits, such as several in Ireland and eastern Canada, appear to be 'hybrids' and possess geological attributes of both end-member types.

The Waterview Connection will provide a high-quality strategic alternative to State Highway One and complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route connecting State Highways 20 and 16. The project includes twin three-lane motorway tunnels 2.4 km long and 13.1 m internal diameter (ID). The tunnel construction started in November 2013 using the tenth largest earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world. The tunnels will pass beneath urban and greenfield areas as well as a major local arterial road. The project is being delivered by an alliance of constructors, designers and the New Zealand Transport Agency. This paper describes some of the key innovative and cost saving design solutions that have been achieved through collaboration in the alliance environment with the construction team, owner’s verifier, the segmental lining precast suballiance and the M&E suballiance for the underground works. The key design elements of the tunnel comprise a three-lane roadway, invert culvert and backfill, precast segmental lining, sixteen mined cross passages including a low point sump cross passage and steel segments for opening to the cross passages. This paper reviews interdisciplinary design integration and the economies achieved in the permanent works tunnel lining design, including reduction in lining thickness and optimising reinforcement, cross passage separation of 150 m, efficient design of the invert culvert and backfill design, main drainage pipe and low point sump. Properties of surface films on chalcopyrite and pyrite differ due to variations in the mechanism of oxidation of the two minerals. In the case of chalcopyrite the first step in the oxidation is the release of iron as ferric ions, which hydrolyse depending upon conditions prevalent in solution. The iron oxide/hydroxide layer formed by hydrolysis of ferric ions is quite porous and easily detachable from the surface of chalcopyrite. When the surface oxide layer is detached a sulphur-rich layer is exposed making chalcopyrite hydrophobic. The thickness and properties of the sulphur-rich layer determine its flotation response, both in the absence and presence of collectors. In the case of pyrite, on the other hand, iron is released as ferrous ions which require much higher pHs to hydrolyse. These ions remain adsorbed on the surface of pyrite making the surface hydrophilic. When the iron species are complexed with chelating agents such as ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid, pyrite was hydrophobic. Siderite forms in the presence of carbonate ions, which might be present in several flotation systems. Siderite nucleated on isolated sites at the surface. The presence of such a precipitate is likely to influence the interaction of pyrite with various reagents thereby altering its flotation behavior. To determine the mechanism of oxidation, kinetics of oxidation of chalcopyrite and pyrite was studied using several electrochemical techniques, namely, cyclic voltammetry, polarisation and impedance spectroscopy. Floatability of the minerals was investigated by measurement of contact angles on mineral electrodes and by Halimond tube flotation. Impedance spectroscopy was especially useful for estimating various properties of surface film for both the minerals. Properties such as charge transfer resistance, porosity, and capacitances of the surface films on the two minerals are compared under several conditions of oxidation. These properties were found to be a strong function of the rate and the extent of oxidation.

Ashton Mining Limited is the operator of two wholly-owned gold mine/mill complexes at Laverton and Leonora. In addition, Ashton owns 43% of the Bardoc Joint Venture mine/mill complex, which is operated by Aberfoyle Pty Limited. All three of these operations are located in the Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia (Figure 1). At Laverton, milling capacity is in the order of 1 million tonnes per year in 3 mills (Duketon 200,000 tpa, Cork Tree Well 650,000 tpa and Craiggiemore 150,000 tpa). These mills service a distance of 80 km, from Baneygo in the north to Craiggiemore in the south. Mineral tenements cover a 150 km long stretch of a series of sub-parallel mineralised structures. At Leonora, the Harbour Lights mill is designed to treat 750,000 tpa of sulphide ore, and has treated oxide ores at an annualised rate of over 1 million tonnes/year. The mill is supported by several tenement blocks that lie within a 50 km trucking radius of the mill. The most important of these is the Mertondale tenement block, which covers approximately 25km of the Mertondale Shear Zone.

THE objective of the iron smelter is naturally the production of high quality iron at the lowest practicable cost. To enable this, large tonnages are put through the blast furnace, and, at the same time, the quality of the iron must be under definite control.The modern blast furnace enables these objectives to be attained. The description whieh follows sets out the general details of construction of such furnaces, and the operation at thc Broken Hill Proprietary Company's blast furnaces at Newcastle, New South Wales.The occurence of iron in many forms is so well known as to need no description. Modern civilisation may be said to be built on a foundation of iron, and, today, the production of iron and steel has beeome one of the world's industries.A short historical introduction will serve to show the evolution of the processes and apparatus since iron production assumed importance.There is no definite date fixed as to when iron was first made, or by what means it was first discovered. Perhaps prehistoric man threw iron bearing stone on to his fire, and these became reduced, Ieaving a soft metal behind, or more probably the first iron was of meteoric origin.There is evidence, however, to prove that it has been known for a period of 6000 years. Iron has been found in the Pyramids and its use was known to the early Eqyptians and later to the Hebrews, Assyrians, Greeks and Chinese. Following the Greeks, the Romans excelled in its extraction and uses in the manufacture of their instruments of war, and to this fact can largely be attributed the success of their many wars of conquest. This paper briefly discusses the negotia- tion of the more important provisions in agree- ments for exploration and mining rights with Pacific countries. LAND RIGHTS Land rights are complicated and sometimes controversial in many of the Pacific countries. In some countries, a company will have to deal with land owners directly; in others, the government will act as intermediary. Inevit- ably, a company will have to deal with both. Mining companies need to be sensitive to the culture and particular interests of the land owners and of their history in defending their rights. The issues are too complicated to be dealt with here. Some mining companies have spent, and will continue to spend, considerable time trying to understand them. It will " require patience, perseverance, sensitivity and unflagging optimism. The better advised companies will ensure that their local repre- sentatives get to know the land owners, under- stand their concerns, and will pursue a policy of keeping them informed on a regular basis of all of the company's activities and proposed activities. Good community relations are the keystone for good mining operations in the Pacific. Most countries will require the submission of an environmental impact statement so that they will know in advance what effects a pro- posted mining operation are expected to have on the environment and how it is intended to deal with them. They will also want to approve the company's environmental reclamation and rehabilitation plan. Let's face facts right away - mining, by its very nature, is not going to improve the environment. There will be waste discharges, emissions and deposits. They will affect the land, air and water and hence human, marine and animal life and vegetation. There will be sounds and odours and the esthetics of mining operations, though perhaps pleasing to geolo- gists and mining engineers, will not please Others.

The zeta potential on the surface of activated orit carbon were estimated in lhe presence of selected cations and anions that are normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area of Western Australia. Additions of such ions to solution of varying pH shifted the isoelectric point of carbon from pH 4.45 to pH 7-8.3, while the anions moved Lhc isoelectric point 10 less than pH 3.2. In the presence of gold cyanide SoluLion additions of spectator ions indicated the isoelecLric poilll to be aL pH less than 3.2; the only exception was for Fe" ion where the isoelecLric point was at pH 5.9. The decrease in zeta potential appeared to be related to the counter-ions present. The decrease may also be related to the adsorption of hydroxyl ion complexes that are likely to be formed when cations are present in the solutions.Gold adsorpLion by activated orit carbon from gold cyanide solution seem to be indicated by the magnitude of zeta potential on the carbon surface. An attempt is made to relate gold adsorption and zeta potential on carbon surface with the pH of the medium.

The grinding of ore to a size that is conducive to the extraction of minerals by leaching or flotation is an essential and expensive component of most mineral-processing operations. Overgrinding results in reduced flotability of the minerals, as well as problems in the filtration and thickening processes, while undergrinding leads to a product in which the minerals have not been exposed, and cannot be leached or floated effectively. Furthermore, coarse material causes settling in thickeners and agitator tanks. It is therefore essential, from the perspective of both operational and extraction efficiency, to grind the ore to an optimum size fraction. A well-run milling circuit will yield a product within a narrow size band and at a high throughput. Although the effective operation and control of milling circuits with their many operating parameters is widely acknowledged as a complex as well as a critically important operation, the benefits of such control are difficult to quantify. This is due to the difficulties in relating more stable operation to increased recovery of the valuable components in downstream processes.

The main components of face design are the power loader, face conveyor and powered support system and the interaction of these components determines the effectiveness of strata control. A major influence upon the interrelationship of this equipment is the geological environment, of which seam thickness appears to play an important role. Recent thick seam experience indicates a significantly different characteristic behaviour pattern from that observed in thin seams The structural integrity of the face wall is particularly influenced by seam discontinuities such as natural joint planes and mining-induced fractures in the yield zone ahead of the faceline. In addition, the presence of stone bands or dirt partings in the seam offers interfaces for uncontrolled release of blocky material. Some case study experience at British collieries provides a comparison with performance data at a specific location, that highlights the importance of coal face layout and design.

This paper describes the investigations and results of monitoring of deformations of houses located within the area of influence of a pillar collapse over the Westfalen No. 3 coal mine near Ipswich, Queensland. The subsidence resulted in minor subsidence of at least 18 modem houses and serious damage to 4 others. The history of the events and the measures taken to deal with the physical problems arising are described. The investigations and results are described and related to the mining methods and geology. The stability of coal pillars up to 9.6 m high was considered and computer modelling undertaken to relate surface subsidence to estimates of the extent of pillar failure. Assessments were made of the likely extent of subsidence during the incident. Measurements of distortion and tilt were obtained as the ground slowly subsided and criteria established to determine when the structures were deemed to be unsafe. Detailed surveys of houses affected or anticipated to become affected were also undertaken. Four houses were condemned and subsequently demolished as a result of excessive tilt. The methods of assessment are described and the implications of the results related to the various' house designs.

A nine-month investigation was conducted into the effect on coke quality and blast furnace operation of the addition of bentonite and southern coal to the northern coal fed to the coke ovens at the Newcastle steelworks.Additions of 0·3 per cent bentonite or 25 per cent southern coal to the northern coal increased the coke strength from 15-20 A.S.T.M. stability to 25-30 A.S.T.M. stability. It is likely that improved mixing and blending facilities would, in both cases, give a coke of over 30 A.S.T.M. stability.For the same coke strength, the use of 0 3 per cent imported Wyoming bentonite was considerably cheaper than the use of 25 per cent southern coal, but the use of Australian bentonite promises the same coke strength for still lower costs. Other additives such as coke breeze, charcoal, iron ore fines, and certain other finely divided materials, gave relatively minor improvements in coke quality.There appeared to be sufficient improvement in blast furnace operation and production to justify full scale addition of bentonite to improve coke quality, although other variables, particularly iron ore physical quality, overshadowed on many occasions the effect of coke quality. Further coke trials with southern or bentonite will be carried out when ore quality has been improved by the introduction of ore sintering at Newcastle.INTRODUCTIONDuring the period of operation of the Newcastle coke ovens and blast furnaces from April 1960 (when No. 3 blast furnace was blown in after rebuilding) to December 1960, a bentonite coke trial was carried out based on earlier research findings (Gregory, 1959a, 1959b; Felton and Gregory, 1960; Gregory, 1960) that as little as 0 3 per cent to 05 per cent bentonite clay added to northern N.S.W. high volatile coking coals gave a significant increase in coke strength.
