In this paper, the pretreatment of concentrates by roller press was present to improve the granulation of blends comprising some 30 per cent iron ore concentrates and enhance the sintering performance. It is shown that by pretreatment of fine concentrates through roller press, the content of +3 mm fractions of granulation mixture and sinter mixture permeability are elevated by ten per cent and 35 per cent. In the meantime, a sinter productivity increase from 1.51 - 1.62 t.m-2.h-1 is attainted in pot tests with similar sinter tumble index and at lower coke rate. The mechanism of the pretreatment of concentrates process to improve sintering performance of fine iron ore concentrates was demonstrated by mineralogy that better permeability help form more calcium ferrite and good microstructure of sinter, further proven by the better metallurgical performance of sinter.

Mine ecological monitoring schemes are often conducted only to address compliance and in some cases do not have the sufficient statistical power or understanding of ecological systems to assess, quantitatively, the meeting of rehabilitation targets or mine impacts. Monitoring schemes for rehabilitation commonly rely on analogue sites or premining baselines (reference sites) to assess whether rehabilitation sites are ecologically similar and thus successfully rehabilitated. In the case of monitoring for mine impacts, if the impacted sites diverge from reference data, the site is considered to be impacted. Fundamental to any monitoring scheme is testing the sampling design to ensure that it can detect these differences if they are present through adequate sample sizes (ie statistical power). However, a good understanding of the ecological system is required to ensure that differences detected are ecologically significant. Modelling ecosystem properties can provide a quantitative understanding of how ecosystems change over time and space, in response to natural environmental variations and thus aid in determining significant ecological differences. Furthermore, modelling methods can be used to predict future ecosystem states. Within the ecological literature, guidelines for robust statistical monitoring designs and modelling methods exist but are not routinely being used in the mining industry. This paper uses simple examples to discuss: problems with current compliance monitoring methods; importance of robust statistical techniques; and how modelling can assist rehabilitation assessment and guide monitoring schemes. The aim of this paper is to describe general monitoring and modelling methods that could be potentially used for mine site monitoring and closure assessment. These methods are often considered by mining companies as an extra expense that provide little practical benefit, and the domain of academia; however, engaging these methods may be more cost-effective in the long-run than conducting untargeted monitoring schemes that give no confidence to regulators on whether rehabilitation criteria have been met. The Lanfranchi Nickel mine is located approximately 48 km south of Kambalda in Western Australia. Mining first commenced in the mid-1970s under the previous owner, Western Mining Corporation Ltd. After two years on care and maintenance, Panoramic Resources (previously known as Sally Malay Mining Ltd) purchased the operation in November 2004. The site currently produces approximately 10?000 tonnes of nickel metal annually from approximately 430?000 tonnes of ore. The Ore is mined from four main orebodies; Deacon, Helmut South, Lanfranchi and Schmitz. The Helmut South orebody is situated approximately 790 m below surface and extends to a resource depth of 940 m. Horizontal thickness of the orebody ranges from 10 m to 45 m in width, with the average being 30 m. Previous mining at the Lanfranchi operations specifically the Helmut orebody, had a history of seismic activity. When Panoramic Resources acquired the operation it was decided that seismicity was going to be an issue and therefore a mining method needed to be selected that could effectively manage this potential risk. The dip of the orebody is quite shallow at 45º, with a 30º plunge to the south . The hanging-wall comprises of very weak ultramafics. Due to these factors the orebody posed several mining challenges. To safely and effectively mine the Helmut South orebody in the Lanfranchi Nickel mine, underhand cut and fill mining was selected as the most appropriate mining method. Paste fill comprising of cemented gold tailings was the backfill of choice. This paper is intended to convey some of the key learnings from the use of a mining method that has not been commonly practiced in Australia.

Blast furnace slags which fall into the quaternary system SiO2 - A1203 - MgO - CaO have latent hydraulic properties which depend on the degree of vitrification. When the oxides com- bine to form Calcium Silicate Hydrates and other products of hydration the bonds between elements are at a lower energy level than those which exist in the glassy state. Transition from the glassy state to the crystalline state is thermo- dynamically favoured and, in the context of this paper, such slags possess internal energy. Manufacture of Portland cement is respon- sible for about 3.6 per cent of total industrial energy consumption in Canada. Pyroprocessing accounts for about 83 per cent of this figure or 3 per cent of the total. The processing of blast furnace slag to a condition in which it can be used as a partial substitute for Portland cement requires no pyroprocessing and, on average, only about 11 per cent of the energy needed for Portland cement. In North America the benefits of slag as a cementitious materials have been obscured by other considerations, the most important being commercial strategy. This situation has under- gone radical change as a result of the rising cost of energy, and government pressures to conserve energy.

Magnetite mineralisation within the South Middleback Range has been known since the early 1930s; however, it was not until 1989 that BHP (then owners of the Middleback Ranges mining leases) drilled 10 700 m of diamond core into what was then known as the Iron Duchess low-grade deposit. In 2002 a review of Iron Resources left in the Middleback Ranges and the identification of downstream processing benefits using magnetite as a primary feed source led to the commencement of an 18 000 m resource drilling program of the high-grade core of the Iron Duchess low-grade orebody (renamed the Iron Magnet deposit). This paper describes the geology, processes and procedures used since drilling recommenced in early 2003. The Iron Magnet deposit is located 53 km southwest of Whyalla in the South Middleback Range, South Australia. It is a Paleoproterozoic stratabound magnetite deposit that lies down-dip and lateral to the Iron Duke hematite deposit, hosted within the Lower Middleback Iron Formation of the Hutchison Group meta-sediments within the Cleve subdomain of the Gawler Craton. Magnetite bearing host units within the Lower Middleback Iron Formation can be divided into a æmixedÆ basal sequence, a lower iron carbonate unit, a middle iron talc unit and an upper iron silica unit, all units grading up sequence and laterally into one another. The magnetite mineralisation is hydrothermal in origin. The strongest consistent mineralisation coincides with the iron carbonate unit, and the hematite orebodies of the Iron Duke are interpreted to represent up-dip supergene enrichment of the same unit. The Iron Magnet occurs within a large-scale parasitic syncline-anticline pair on the west limb of a larger syncline. Major bounding north-south shear zones occur on the east and west sides of the deposit. Cross-cutting west-northwest, northwest, northeast and east-northeast trending faults displace mineralisation. The commencement of drilling in 2003 lead to the migration of geological and geochemical databases, re-logging and re-assaying of all old cores that intersected the deposit, updating of logging codes and procedures, and strict Qa/Qc procedures to ensure the study satisfied JORC standards. External consultants were used for auditing and bench marking. The strong geophysical responses of magnetite and the wealth of close spaced ground magnetic and gravity data already completed over the Middleback Ranges allowed for refining of drill hole targets for the drilling program. It also provided an indirect method for ascertaining magnetite grade and tonnage volumes.

To accommodate the fast growing need for services in Singapore’s Marina Bay downtown area, Marina South, the construction of a common services tunnel (CST) was required. The CST includes various services such as telecom cables, power lines and water pipes. A deep excavation and temporary earth retaining system (TERS) was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnels. Marina Bay is reclaimed land over thick soft marine clay which is likely to be still consolidating. The deep soft marine clay poses a big challenge for deep excavations in downtown areas where highways and sensitive structures are close by. This paper presents a case study of part of the CST Phase 1B and 2 at Marina South, in particular a 26 m deep excavation supported by a 46 m diameter temporary caisson. The construction started in late 2006 and the basic structure was completed in early 2011. The caisson was formed by 1.0 m thick overlapping diaphragm wall panels with a capping beam and three ring beams at different depths. Two-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted to predict the ground settlement, lateral displacement, bending moment and hoop stresses in the diaphragm wall and ring beams during different excavation stages. A comprehensive instrumentation and monitoring scheme was established to verify the design predictions, control excavation safety and trigger the contingency plan to protect public safety. The Xitieshan lead-zinc deposit is located in the north margin of the Qaidam Basin, Qinghai Province, China. It is one of the largest massive sulfide deposits in China and is supposed to be of the sedimentation-exhalation (SEDEX) type. Based on the main ore mineral and sulfur isotopic compositions in sulfides found in the wall rock, the S of the deposit is considered to originate from the mantle, but the fluid potentially mixed with sea water during the hydrothermal circulation exchange. The study of lead isotopes shows that the metallogenic material is characterised by the mixture of orogenic and upper crust sources. The lead isotopic signature of the wall rock is similar to that of the ore, which shows synsedimentary characteristics. According to the composition of the rubidium and strontium isotopic signature, the value of 87Sr/86Sr is lower than the average value of that in the crustal rock, which is larger than that of the mantle. Hence, the metallogenic materials of this deposit mainly originate from the crust, which is related to materials of volcanic rocks activation and migration of the deep hot circulating water. The process of the metallogenic fluid circulation shows continuous interaction with crustal material and lead to continuous enrichment of the ore forming fluids. From the study of the fluid inclusion microthermometry of the ore and the associated minerals combined with the C, H-O, Si isotopes, it is believed that the metallogenic fluid is mainly coming from the mantle or the deep magma chambers. The rising deep fluid then mixes with the sea water. The carbon dioxide escaping and mixing with sea water during the hydrothermal exhalation process leads to the rapid precipitation of the hydrothermal fluid to deposit metal. That is proposed as the principal formation mechanism of the Xitieshan deposit. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria is Australia's largest single coal producer. Approximately 19 Mt of coal will be produced in 1989 from the SEC V's newest mine, Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC), which com- menced overburden stripping operation in October 1982. When the adja- cent Loy Yang Power Station is completed in the late 1990's, LYOC will supply between 35 to 45 Mt/a, depending on power station performance and demand of coal for non-power generation uses. LYOC has been a major challenge for the SECV. It is the biggest single open pit coal mining development undertaken in Australia, with a whole of life capital cost approaching A$1 billion. The mine has supplied a very rapidly growing demand for coal from the expanding power station while developing in breadth, length and depth. Coal demand has consistently been above the figures anticipated during the initial planning because of the substantially improved performance of the 500 MW units of the Loy Yang A Power Station. The superior performance of the LYOC and power station has generated additional electrical energy during the first 5 years of power station operation compared with the initial planning targets- at almost no additional capital cost. This has been a major benefit to the SECV. LYOC will continue to present major challenges for the SECV, particularly in achieving overburden removal and coal reserve targets as development of the open cut continues to full depth over the next 15 years.

The use of cemented rock fill (CRF) for support of open stope walls has increased in the Australian underground mines operations over the last five years due in part to its low capital cost. In open stoping the exposed CRF masses require adequate strength and stiffness, in order to resist the forces and to limit the displacement associated with movements in the rock mass surrounding the excavations. The CRF material preparation often involves the use of large particles, either from crushed rock or from development mining waste sometimes up to 1 m in diameter. However, the use of waste rock, which has a poorly graded particle size distribution may not achieve the required minimum target strength due to segregation and large air voids within the fill mass. This paper describes the optimisation of CRF strength by either crushing the waste rock or the addition of sand to the mix. Both methods increase the level of fines in the mix design. Cylindrical samples having 400 mm diameter and 800 mm heights were prepared for uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) testing. The UCS test was determined using the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) large-scale static test frame. The laboratory results were compared with a database of large-scale CRF strength mixed without sand from a number of mine sites around Australia. The comparison shows a significant strength development in the CRF mixing with addition of sand for a given cement percentage. Due to the higher strengths achieved by the addition of sand and the crushing of the waste material these CRF types require less cement to achieve the same strength. The Dizon open pit mine of Benguet Corporation in western Central Luzon, Philippines has yielded some 182 000 t copper, and about 26 000 kg gold and 48 000 kg silver as by products since it started operation in November 1979. The 140 million tonne orebody is associated with a small quartz diorite porphyry stock emplaced in volcanic rocks on the basal slope of a stratovolcano complex as stockworks, fracture fillings and disseminated sulphide mineralization averaging 0.43% Cu, 0.93 g/t Au and 2.5 g/t Ag. Intense hydrothermal alteration accompanied the mineralization that developed fairly distinct mineral assemblages within and around the intrusive. Post-ore volcanic activity later gave birth to an upward-flaring diatreme which broke out south of and adjacent to the orebody and partially destroying it. Subsequent volcanic activity buried the mineralized area along with the rest of the stratovolcano's surrounding slopes under a thick deposit of pyroclastic and laharic debris. Erosion eventually removed the volcanic cappings over Dizon and also exposed the quartz diorite porphyry stock which might have resulted in the truncation of a sizeable section of the Dizon deposit. The chain of stratovolcanoes that comprise southeastern Zambales range hugging the southeastern edge of the Zambales ophiolite is part of a west-facing volcanic arc that extends for some 300 km along the western margin of central and southern Luzon whose development has been correlated to the subduction in the Manila Trench located off the west coast of Luzon. Prominent WNW-trending lineaments that cut across the ophiolite appear to be splays of the Philippine Fault whose intersection with the Mt. Pinatubo stratovolcano complex might have localized the emplacement of a number of intermediate stocks along with the gold-rich porphyry copper mineralizations associated with some of them.

The Telégrafo copper – gold deposit is located in the Centinela district of the Antofagasta region in northern Chile. Telégrafo is a porphyry copper deposit of Eocene – Oligocene age which has a total mineral resource in measured, indicated and inferred categories equal to 2.6 billion tonnes with an average grade of 0.38 per cent copper.Currently the project is in the prefeasibility study phase, including an infill drilling campaign to improve the knowledge of the deposit that should result in an improvement of the mineral resource classification. In this context was decided to review the classification criteria in order to optimise the drill hole density necessary to support the project.This paper presents an application of conditional simulation to evaluate the risk related to drill hole spacing, using a geostatistical approach that mimics the process of evaluation of resources from the perspective of geological modelling and grade estimation. The first step of the approach is the generation of conditional simulations using the available samples to generate several plausible scenarios of the deposit in terms of copper grades and geological units. These scenarios are considered as the unknown reality of the deposit and sampled by synthetic drill holes in order to replicate the geological model process and copper resource estimation. In this way it is possible to establish differences between the possible scenarios and the generated resource estimation models for several simulated drill hole spacing alternatives. These differences or errors can then be quantified in terms of estimated mean, metal content and tonnage over different production volumes.The resulting errors were useful in assisting the decision making process related to the design of drill hole spacing for each category of mineral resource in the Telégrafo project, and to redistribute the budget associated to the drill campaigns for the next stage of the project.

PT Freeport Indonesia is a copper-gold mine operation located in West Papua, Indonesia about 3500 km east of Jakarta. Current ore production is about 270 000 tpd, of which 30 000 tpd comes from underground. In the future, the production from underground will be gradually increased to reach a maximum of 115 000 tpd, as the Grasberg open pit production decreases. The current and future challenge for PT Freeport Indonesia is to fill the quota of underground miners, as Indonesia does not have a long culture of underground work. At present, there are only three active underground mines in Indonesia. The lack of underground skilled labour incited the company to develop its own skilled workforce. In the mean time, to overcome the shortage of personnel, the underground management had to find a way to improve the productivity. Since 21 May 1998, PT Freeport Indonesia Underground Mine has operated with the new roster of two rotating shifts a day, 11 hours per shift. The previous schedule consisted of three nine-hour shifts per day, six days a week, for a total of 26 working days in a month. This change was intended to increase the productivity of the miners. With the previous roster, studies determined that the effective working time was only seven hours per shift. The new roster produces an improvement of effective working hours to about nine hours per shift. As a result, total production has increased by 33 per cent and the utilisation of production equipment has increased by 16.5 per cent. This paper describes the background of the decision to change the work schedule, the study carried out to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of the new shift roster, the challenges, and then compares the results for various parameters between the old schedule and the new one.

The Wonawinta silver project near Cobar in NSW is under development by Cobar Consolidated Resources Limited (CCR). RMDSTEM Limited is part of the owner’s team for feasibility, design, engineering, construction and commissioning.With a 51Moz resource CCR is one of the largest pure silver players in Australia. A probable reserve of 14.3Moz has been defined for a mine life of approximately five years. The silver mineralization is contained in host rock composed of clays and oxidized limestone. The ore also contains on average 1.3% lead as cerussite, and other minerals. A simple circuit consisting of slurrying of the ore, gravity treatment of the coarse fraction to recover lead, silver extraction using CIL, elution and the Merrill Crowe silver recovery process, has been developed.The “value engineering” approach to this development pioneered over the past decade by RMDSTEM has meant that RMDSTEM has delivered the bankable feasibility study at a cost of $0.07 per resource ounce. It is highly cost effective making efficient use of shareholders funds as well as being very time efficient. This paper describes the application of the value engineering approach to the development of the Wonawinta project.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd - Asia Pacific Iron Ore's (formerly Portman Iron Ore Limited) K deposit (Dowd's Hill), at its Koolyanobbing operation in Western Australia, hosts enriched magnetite mineralisation below the presently mined haematite-goethite ore zone. Two distinct northwest-southeast elongated, highly magnetic anomalous bodies that dip to the north-east appear to be sourced by this deeper mineralisation. Magnetic modelling indicates significant remanent magnetisation with Qratios around 1.5, directed shallow down. The north-west anomaly is overlain by a ridge of uneconomic banded iron formation (BIF) and the present waste dump, whereas the south-east body was partly exposed during ongoing mining of overlying haematite-goethite ore. Sections of the magnetite mineralisation in this south-east anomaly were intersected previously by diamond drill holes. Review of the historic cores identified potential magnetite enrichment, with grades and mineralogy that might be amenable to beneficiation. A first-phase reverse circulation drilling program was designed to further delineate the trend and extent of the two anomalies. The following magnetite mineralisation assemblages are recognised from cores, reverse circulation (RC) drill cuttings and pit mapping of the south-east magnetic body: higher-grade magnetite-haematite ¦ goethite and magnetite ¦ pyrite and lower-grade, recrystallised magnetite-quartz (BIF), magnetite-carbonate, magnetite-talc and minor magnetite-bearing mafic schist. Disseminated specularite is locally present in theassemblages. Talc-schist and massive pyrite occur along the footwall contact. Magnetic susceptibility measured from drill chips within the magnetite-enriched zones reveals an apparent susceptibility values range of 0.2 to 1.3 SI. Preliminary results from Satmagan and Davis tube recovery analysis shows that the magnetite content in these mineralised zones correlate well with existing geophysical data and magnetic susceptibility measurements.

This paper describes a case history of using an integrated geochemical and hydrogeological approach to predicting solute transport from gold mine tailings in highly fractured volcanic terrain. Two modes of transport are identified, namely discrete fissure flow and diffuse seepage through the intervening weathered rock. A simple mass balance approach is used to predict concentrations at points of emergence because most of the seepage migration will be by way of the discrete fissures where advective transport will predominate. The mass balance method has been modified to allow for natural degradation of weak acid dissociable cyanide. The long term effects of diffuse seepage are also examined.

Pit lakes may form when open cut mining leaves a pit void that then fills with ground and surface waters. This often replaces terrestrial ecosystems that existed prior to mining with an aquatic ecosystem, affording an opportunity to improve regional aquatic biodiversity values through targeted aquatic restoration (McCullough and van Etten, 2011). Restoration theory provides guidance when restoring disturbed systems towards landscapes that are of regional value and relevance. But how do we identify a restoration target for a novel aquatic habitat that only exists in the new post-mining landscape? This paper presents a process of first identifying and then surveying local representative aquatic systems, to provide a direction for pit lake restoration efforts and achievement criteria for pit lake relinquishment, using a case study from a sand mining operation amongst wetlands in south-western Australia.The company mines silica sands following mechanical removal of topsoil and then extraction of the ore from below the watertable by dredging. Assessment of wetland and riparian vegetation was achieved through the establishment and measurement of temporary monitoring transects across five natural wetlands in the Kemerton area. Several more regional wetlands were also visited and observations made to supplement and validate these data.Distinct vegetation zonation was found across each wetland, although typically wetland basins were unvegetated or filled with younger woody plants with patchy distributions. Fringing riparian vegetation consisted of few species (commonly the paperbark Melaleuca rhaphiophylla and the sedge Lepidosperma longitudinale), but community composition and structure were variable between wetlands. The pattern of vegetation seen across natural wetlands was best explained by topography and soil chemistry, with low lying wetland areas more likely to experience regular flooding and accumulate organic matter and nutrients.In conclusion, where they are available, regional natural waterbodies may constitute the best valid restoration goal. Nevertheless, the goal may need to consist of a range of closure design opportunities, rather than a single target.

Ever since it made its debut in 1962, in the form of a Robbins 31R, the raiseborer has become an accepted tool in the mining and civil construction industries. The first raiseborer to be used in the Witwatersrand goldfields made its appearance in 1968. This was a Robbins 42R which could raisebore 185m deep holes to 1,22m diameter. From 1968 to 1973 capability increased with the introduction of first the 61R, then the 71R and finally the 83R, which could raisebore 610m deep holes to 3,66m diameter. This created a demand for larger holes but the cost of bigger, more powerful machines requiring larger, stronger drill pipe, cutters and other accessories was prohibitive. To avoid replacing existing models such as the 71R, and in order to increase their capability, the concept of reaming in two stages sequentially was developed jointly by a German drilling equipment manufacturer, Wirth, their South African subsidiary, Transbor, and a local contractor, Rocbor Raiseboring and Mining Contractors. The result, the Sequential Reaming Head, proved most successful and existing machines, normally limited to 2,44m diameter holes, could now ream to 3,66m diameter. This created a demand for even larger holes. In order to maximise the use of the sequential reaming head to meet this demand the HG330, and subsequently the HG330SP raiseborer were developed. Using a 4,26m/6,02m cutting head, these machines have raisebored holes 1000m deep in hard rock. The raise- boring of the first major hole to be excavated by this combination, the 484m deep x 6,02m diameter surface shaft at Premier Mine is described. Reference is also made to six other shafts which have been completed or are under construction.

Major cities are not only the focal point for AustralianÆs work, leisure and homes, they also are the focal point for the flow of resources into the built environment, motor cars and transportation and urban consumables. The steady increases in æstockÆ and waste generation, in line with GDP growth, means that cities will become the mine sites of the future if the inherent value is recovered from these materials at end of life. The urban waste stream can be characterised as containing approximately nine per cent hydrocarbon-based materials; 57 per cent biomass-based material; 28 per cent fully mineralised materials that are inert, five per cent metals and less than one per cent of problematic materials that are potentially hazardous and toxic. In order to convert these wastes into value added inputs into the economy, a number of technological interventions are required. These æurban waste mining techniquesÆ revolve around source separation and material streaming. One issue that needs to be overcome when determining which mining technique to implement, is identifying the option that will deliver optimal value, both from a financial and a sustainability perspective. The difference between embodied energy and calorific value is a case in point. Highest net resource value (HNRV) is a concept that can assist in choosing between different resource recovery options. The assessment can be done at a strategic level, or can be used to work out material specific issues. For example, used tyres can be recovered for their energy content at an approximate cost of $120 per tonne, whereas mechanical processing of used tyres can deliver a net benefit of $192.

The Thabazimbi iron ore deposit comprises a series of stratabound orebodies, on average 18 - 25 m thick that are aligned along the faulted basal contact between the Penge Iron Formation and dolostones of the Malmani Subgroup, Transvaal Supergroup. Field geological relationships and petrographic observations suggest that the formation of high-grade iron ores took place after contact metamorphism related to the intrusion of the Bushveld Complex (2.06 Ga) but before the deposition of red beds of the Waterberg Group at ca 1.9 Ga. Hard, high-grade iron ores are predominantly composed of martite and microplaty hematite. Goethite is restricted to supergene-modified ores close to the Late Cretaceous û Early Cenozoic Old African land surface. At depth, the high-grade hematite ores interfinger with low-grade dolomite-hematite and calcite-hematite ores. Iron oxides (martite, microplaty hematite) present in these low-grade ores are texturally indistinguishable from those in the associated high-grade ores, ie ore formation is genetically associated with carbonate metasomatism. Microthermometric studies of fluid inclusions in sparitic carbonates and rare megaquartz reveal their hydrothermal origin. Two compositionally distinct aqueous fluids of shallow crustal origin are identified, namely a Ca-Na-rich high-salinity brine (26 wt per cent NaClequivalent, TH ~160¦C), and an aqueous Mg-K-bearing fluid of intermediate salinity (8.3 - 12.6 wt per cent NaClequivalent, TH~120 - 150¦C). The results confirm that high-grade hematite orebodies at the Thabazimbi deposit owe their origin to an event of extensive oxidative carbonate metasomatism (calcification), similar to that recognised at other important high-grade iron ore deposits in the world. Hydrothermal ore formation is both structurally and lithologically controlled. Size and quality of the orebodies was improved by Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic deep lateritic weathering as carbonate-hematite ores were enriched to friable high-grade ores, but this supergene modification is second in importance compared to the primary event of hydrothermal ore formation.

A comparison was made between chemical analysis and ocular mineral/rock classification in health-based risk assessment of historical mine waste produced between 1625 and 1975. Large parts of the mine waste are heavily weathered and secondary minerals are abundant. The field was divided into several areas from where composite samples were collected. Seventy-five mine waste samples were selected for chemical analysis (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) and ocular mineral/rock classification (silicate, mica, granite/pegmatite, carbonate, iron oxide ore, sulfide ore, distribution between chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena and distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite). The waste has been produced in conjunction with mining a complex sulfidic ore with increasing iron oxide content (mainly magnetite) towards the northern part of the field. Elevated concentrations were found for Cd (average 26 mg/kg dw), Cu (average 3500 mg/kg dw), Pb (average 4100 mg/kg dw) and Zn (average 11 000 mg/kg dw). Large differences between average and median values indicated that the data was not normally distributed, ie the metals occur as discrete minerals (eg chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite). The ocular classification indicated low carbonate content, chalcopyrite dominating over sphalerite and galena in most samples and an even distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite. Both analytical and ocular mineral/rock classification data were combined into a common matrix that was evaluated using multivariate statistics. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed, for instance, that chromium and vanadium were mostly associated with harder minerals and rocks. PCA also indicated that a similar graphical picture could be obtained for chemical data and ocular mineral/rock classification data, respectively. The comparison indicates that ocular mineral/rock classification can replace or at least reduce the numbers of chemical analysis in health- based risk assessment of historical mine waste.
