THE Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado is believed to contain the richest large deposit of oil shale in North America. The major portion, about 1650 sq miles, is bounded by the White River on the north, the Grand Hogback, which runs from Meeker to Rifle, on the east, the Colorado River to the south, and the drainage basin of Salt and Douglas Creeks on the west. The Basin is a plateau 7000 to 9000 ft high, composed of 3000 ft of the Green River series of Eocene age and surrounded by a steep escarpment of 1000 to 3000 ft. From the escarpment the beds dip gently toward the center. Although oil shale is found in all members of the Green River series, the rich thick beds are found chiefly in the Parachute Creek member. This is normally capped by 100 to 200 ft of the Evacuation Creek, the youngest member of the Green River series. Actually the Piceance Creek Basin oil shale is not a shale, nor does it contain oil. It is magnesium marlstone holding solid organic matter capable of being broken down by heat into gases, some of which can be condensed into oil. The marlstone is resilient nonporous rock, difficult to sample by pick or hammer and moil. Many companies and individuals prospected the Colorado oil shale shortly after the first World War,' see Fig. 1, but because of the discovery of large quantities of petroleum in the late 1920's in Cali- fornia, Oklahoma, and East Texas, interest in oil shale development waned and did not revive until World War 11. In 1944 the writer, employed by the Bureau of Mines, prospected the high grade oil shale in numerous places along the southern outcrop of the Piceance Creek Basin. Several channel samples about 100 ft in length were cut, see Fig. 2. An eight-man crew needed a week to cut a satisfactory channel 80 ft long in the cliff face. The Phillips Petroleum Co., the Union Oil Co. of California and others also prospected the oil shale outcrop. In 1945 the Bureau of Mines initiated a core drilling program for the purpose of obtaining accurate samples from the Piceance Creek Basin. The U. S. Geological Survey set up a program for the geological study of the Basin that is still going on." Until the end of 1951 a total of 31 holes was drilled for core with diamond drills, and, in addition, cuttings through the oil shale have been obtained from 4 gas wells drilled by standard rotary oil well rigs. A SPRING meeting is to be held at Cleveland this month under the joint auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee and the Ohio Section with the cooperation of the neighboring sections in Pennsyl-vania, Illinois, and the other States of the Great Lakes region. The discussions will be focused on just one subject, that of manganese, but will cover that thor- oughly as is indicated by the following list of papers. Nearly 14 pounds of manganese is needed for every ton of steel made. Estimates indicate that the total reserves of ore in this country suitable for making ferro would hardly supply domestic requirements for ten years, even if it could all be mined in that time. The grade of ore called for by present practice must come from abroad. The present tariff policy of this country is stated to cost industry $8,000,000 in order to force production of manganese ore to the extent of $600,000. What is the wise thing to do? Should a stock be accumulated? If so, how? Is it feasible to change practice and use low-grade ore or to beneficiate the ores of this grade and meet our requirements? What progress is being made in this direction? ,These and similar questions are raised in the various papers that have been submitted and will be open for dis-cussion.

In August 1973, Fluor Utah, Inc. was awarded a contract by the Office of Coal Research (now part of the Energy Research and Development Administration), Department of the Interior, for the examination of the unique problems of large-scale surface coal mining to supply coal conversion complexes. The project consists of two phases: (I) data base development and organization and the formulation of a mathematical computer modeling system for surface mining; and (II) computer manipulation of the data base in accordance with the model to formulate several typical preliminary mine and preparation plant designs. Phase I is scheduled for completion by the end of July 1975 and Phase II is scheduled to be complete by the end of January 1977. This paper briefly discusses the effort for only one aspect of this project-the foundation for geologic modeling developed in Phase I. The Phase I task of geologic modeling can be broken down into two subtasks: (1) identify areas containing sufficient resources of surface-minable coal to support at least one large-scale mining complex, and (2) characterize the coal deposits in these areas for computer storage and retrieval. Identification of Resource Regions The basic production design criteria for large-scale surface mining, as stated in the contract, is the production of 75,000 tpd, or more, of bituminous coal. Based on a constant total Btu delivered to the preparation plant, daily production requirements for the different coals are as follows: Bituminous Coal 75,000 tons Subbituminous Coal 99,500 tons Lignite 143,500 tons Although surface mining on this scale is presently non-existent, it is deemed that future operations, in order to meet the increased energy demands, will have to look forward to much larger scale mining complexes. These tonnage requirements are meant to be used only for the delineation of general areas suitable for large-scale surface mining, termed "Strippable Coal Resource Regions." They were determined largely from the latest complete detailed coal resource estimates of the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Nine strippable coal resource regions, containing over 100 billion tons of strippable coal resources, were identified [(see Fig. 1)]. The delineation of these regions was based entirely upon estimates of surface-minable coal resources and the production design criteria for large-scale surface mining. If surface-mined coal was combined with underground production, or if smaller production rates were specified, then other areas which were omitted here would be included in the regions. Changing the outline of the regions, however, would not add any new mining situations to be studied in Phase II. The possibility of deeper production in the Buena Vista Hills was first considered in 1933. At that time, however, the heavy state curtailment program served to deter any operator from drilling test wells, which, if successful, might upset the proration schedules. Because most of the acreage was held by several major operators and the remainder by substantial independents, the adoption of a plan of cooperative development was considered desirable. Such a plan was formulated for the development of any deeper oil and gas horizons that may be found to exist. This plan, which was signed by the Secretaries of the Navy and of the Interior on behalf of the United States on July 9,1936, is now effective for the development of lands within the area shown on Fig. 1. Unlike most unit plans, the present cooperative development plan permits each operator to drill and produce his own wells. For the purpose of this plan the Buena Vista Hills field is divided into two pools. The present production is classed as the " old pool,"' while any future production below a certain marker which roughly coincides with the bottom of the Santa Margarita formation is included in the "pool" to which the provisions particularly apply. Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 2 lies within the area and constitutes the major portion of the Federal leases subject to the plan. There are 39,040 acres and 27 operators within the area. Twenty-six operators controlling 99.5 per cent of the acreage have signed the agreement. Geology oF the Buena Vista Hills The Buena Vista Hills consist of a low range in the southern portion of the San Joaquin Valley, and are roughly parallel to the adjacent Temblor range to the south. The Elk Hills oil field parallels the Buena Vista Hills a few miles to the north. The subsurface structure is a re-entrant anticline upon the major Midway-Sunset monocline. THE hydrometallurgy of special high-grade zinc as practiced by the Sullivan Mining Co. at its electrolytic zinc plant, Kellogg, Idaho, involves an important filtration step immediately following the leaching process. By means of the filtration the heavy zinc sulphate solution is separated from the residual products which remain after the zinc calcine has been dissolved in the sulphuric acid electrolyte. Because this plant uses the so-called high-acid, high-density process' for the production of First, the strength of the electrolyte (270g H,SO, per liter) results in a saturated zinc sulphate solution, having a specific gravity of 1.510 to 1.540, which must be kept warm during filtration because of its property of "seeding out" small crystals if allowed to drop much below 60°C. Second, the action of the "high" acid on zinc calcine under the temperature conditions of the leach (80" to 102 "C), although favorable to good zinc extraction, causes a considerable quantity of iron to be dissolved (8 to 18. g per liter) along with variable quantities of alumina and silica, depending on the grade and type of original zinc concentrates roasted. These three, iron, alumina, and silica, are almost completely precipitated during the neutralization of the leach (only a few. milligrams per liter of each remain in solution), so that the resulting pulp, instead of being a granular, sand-like product having a particle-size distribution dependent on the fineness of the zinc calcines leached, is in reality a slimy, chemical precipitate whose filtration characteristics constantly change depending on the amounts of iron silica, and other impurities, which are dissolved and reprecipi-tated. Third, the combination of supersaturated solution of high specific gravity plus a dense, semi-gelatinous residue creates a difficult washing problem requiring a positive displacement wash to liberate the zinc sulphate entrapped in the pulp. In a closed-cycle hydrometallurgical operation, such as practiced in this plant, the extent of washing is determined by the volum,e limitations imposed on the intermediate wash waters by the amount of "fresh" (or process) water which may be added. The volume of fresh water used for makeup purposes is limited to the amount which is lost during the closed cycle by evaporation in the leach, sulphate content of the calcines leached, moisture content of the residue, and spillage. The Burt filter as modified and improved by the Sullivan Mining Co. has successfully met and overcome these difficulties under a variety of zinc plant operating conditions since 1928. It might have many interesting applications to metallurgical fields other than that of electrolytic zinc, and its possible usefulness to hydrometallurgists in general warrants its description and discussion. The Burt filter is so named from its inventor who originated it in Mexico for pulp filtration in the cyanide process for gold and silver ores. While retaining the basic principle of Burt's earlier revolving pressure-type filter with internal filtration media, a number of modifications and improvements have been made in Sullivan Mining Co.'s installation. The Burt filter may be classified as a batch-type pressure filter in contradistinction to either the conventional vacuum-type filter, which depends on atmospheric pressure to force solution through a cloth medium, or to the filter-press, which employs whatever pressure is imparted by the pump delivering the liquid being filtered. The Burt consists essentially of a hollow steel cylinder about 40 ft long, 5 ft in diameter, resting horizontally, and capable of rotation about its long axis. It is supported on one end by a hollow trunnion and near the other end by a riding-ring and roller combination. The cylinder is lined with filter units each fastened against the inside of the shell and parallel to the long axis so as to form a hollow cavity into which pulp may be charged. A specific amount of pulp is admitted to the filter and a unique valving arrangement prevents the loss of pulp while air pressure forces the solution through a canvas medium to the discharge port of each filter unit. The residue is left on the surface of the canvas inside the cavity. The remainder of the filter cycle is concerned with washing the residue free of zinc sulphate, discharging it from the Burt, and preparing the filter for the next charge. A more detailed description of Burt filter construction, a typical filter cycle, and its operating characteristics when employed on material encountered in this plant will be given in that order. Description of the Filter: Fig. 1 shows a side elevation view of a filter with riveted shell construction. Since this drawing was made shells have been fabricated by welding, instead of riveting, with complete success. Shells are lagged on the outside to retain heat. Fig. 1 shows a side elevation and plan view of a Burt filter in operating position. The 1/2-in. steel shells are lined with 3/16-in. copper sheet as protection against the corrosive action of the solution (containing about 500 mg Cu per liter) on iron, and the copper is given a thin protective coating of plastic-base paint. GAS as a factor in the efficiency of oil production, might be a better title for this paper as it deals in general with the significance of the gas-oil ratio as an index of the efficiency of oil production and briefly discusses oil production methods with reference to the gas-oil ratio in wells, particularly during the early life of a field. In the recent hearings held at Washington before the Federal Oil Conservation Board the fuller utilization of the energy contained in the gas occluded in or associated with the oil underground was stressed by some of the speakers when referring to greater ultimate recovery of oil. One speaker commenting on this point said in part, "There is ample evidence indicative that if the gas associated with the petroleum in our fields were conserved and elevated gas pressure maintained in the oil sands during their productive life, the ultimate production of oil could be greatly increased."

Discussion of the paper of K. HUESSENER, presented at the New York. meeting, February, .1916, and printed in Bulletin No. -110, February, 1916, pp. 443 to 474. KARL NIBECKER, Youngstown, O.-It has been contended that the method of measuring the operation of a blast-furnace boiler plant by means of the amount of steam generated per pound of coke used in the blast furnace is not of any value and even that it is quite misleading. It has been found, in the plant with which I am connected, that, in general, a blast furnace will operate during a month so close to average. conditions that the average monthly measure of the plant efficiency is indicated by the number of pounds of steam made per pound of coke put into the furnace, neglecting the amount of iron made and the amount of gas used for heating the stoves. For some time, it has been our custom to keep a record of this figure and use it as a general indicator of the operating practice. In comparing this figure from two different plants we have found some difficulty, due to differing conditions. It is conceivable but not altogether probable that a slight difference in burden, kind of ore or coke, would account for this difference. The method of using the gas, whether washed or unwashed, and the plant arrangement, may affect this number. For several plants on which we have worked up this number, we have found that most of the ordinary running irregularities are eliminated during a run of a month or more and that the number is, therefore, satisfactory. In connection with a plot of the number of pounds of steam generated per pound of coke, we are also plotting the production of the furnaces and the pounds of coke used per ton of production. With these three curves plotted on the same sheet, we believe that the operating man has sufficient information to judge of the efficiency of his plant' for any month.

The fusion-point of clay has usually been considered to be influenced chiefly by the quantity of fluxing impurities which the clay contained. Those clays which contain a high percentage of fluxes, such as ferric oxide, lirne, magnesia, and alkalies, fuse at a low temperature. Aside from the percentage of fluxing-impurities, the size of the grains exerts an important influence. Yet, while this fact has, no doubt, been recognized by many, practically no attempts have been made to prove it by actual experiment, although in the case of fire-clays, Prof. H. O. Hofman has rather disputed it. To illustrate the point more clearly, suppose a clay to be made up of a mixture of very refractory grains, such as kaolinite, and some fusible ones. If this clay be heated, the more easily fusible grains will melt first on the surface, and the softening under heat will gradually extend from the surface of the grain to its center. The larger, therefore, the size of the grain, the longer the time required for the heat to penetrate it. Now, if two samples of clay contain the same volume of flux, but of unequal size, the one containing the smaller-sized grains should fuse first, because the fluxing materials are more evenly and thoroughly distributed through the clay, so that they will more or less surround the refractory grains, which tend to act as a framework and hold up the clay-mass when heated. In order to demonstrate the effect of fineness of grain on the fusibility of clay, several mixtures were made up, consisting of white clay and other minerals. The white clay used was a very refractory type from Georgia, the fusion-point of which lay about cone 35 of the Seger series. The mixtures were formed into small bars 1* inches long, and set on a narrow surface, so that the ends were free to bend as soon as the mass softened. They were burned in a Seger gas-furnace.

Oil and gas development in Mississippi during 1936 was about the same as during the past three or four years, with less drilling activity in the proven fields; although at the end of the year there was a decided increase in interest and activity. Jackson Gas Field Six wells were drilled in the Jackson gas field, three of which were producers and three dry holes. The gas production for 1936 was 12,968,-000,000 cu. ft., which is 2,500,000,000 cu. ft. more than for any previous year. The total gas production from the field to the end of 1936 has been 58,092,000,000 cubic feet. Thirteen producing gas wells were abandoned during the year because of encroachment of salt water. At present there are 99 producing gas wells in the field. The three oil wells on the edge of the field, which had been producing, were not produccd during 1936, although they are still capable of making some oil with much salt water. The rock pressure at the end of the year was 930 lb., which is a decline of 80 Ib. since the discovery of the field. In March of 1936, the State Legislature appropriated $115,000 to be used by the State Mineral Lease Commission in drilling some gas wells

Prior publications have shown that the structure and characteristics of direct reduced iron produced by direct reduction from iron ores or iron ore pellets depend on many parameters which include process variables, such as, reduction temperature, reduction gas composition, and type or origin of the raw material. Most of the published literature deals with direct reduced iron produced in the laboratory at theoretically interesting but commercially uneconomical or technically impossible conditions. Much of the work was carried out in pure carbon monoxide in pure hydrogen, or in such mixtures of carbon monoxide and hydrogen which are of no commercial interest. Other results were obtained at temperatures which are too high and would cause sticking in large scale plants. For this reason, work was initiated by Midrex Corporation to investigate the influence of raw materials and reduction temperature on structure and characteristics of direct reduced iron. The composition of the reducing gas used to prepare the samples for this study produces results corresponding to those obtained with a typical commercial gas. The temperatures at which reduction was carried out are in a technically feasible range. This paper reports on the results.

EHRENBERG was the first to publish and direct attention to the peculiarities of the diatomaceous deposit of Richmond; but how and by whom he was supplied with the material for his microscopical investigations, is not generally known; but we may presume W. B. Rogers, formerly State Geologist of Virginia, furnished the material, and may have given the geological position or horizon. O£ these facts we have no available evidence, nor have we any estimate of the thickness of this stratum of diatomaceous or infusorial earth. At the request of a member of this Institute, I have investigated the subject, and offer the following facts as the result, derived principally from information supplied by Mr. John Ott, of the Southern Fertilizing Company, Dr. William Taylor, State Chemist, C. Peticolas, microscopist, Captain Robert H. Temple, civil engineer, Major C. M. Bolton and Mr. C. M. Smith, civil engineers, and formerly engaged in constructing the tunnel under Church Hill, in Richmond. The city of Richmond is generally described as being built on seven hills. This is not the fact, geologically speaking. Originally, there was an immense plateau of land, about two hundred feet above tide, in which a deep excavation was made from the west to east by the James River cutting down to the granite. Opening southward and meeting the valley of the James are various ravines and gullies, in the principal of which are Shockoe and Gillies Creeks. The formation is tertiary, subdivided into all the classified divisions, but at the present moment no one has been found to make this section a special study. Rogers's early classifications and diagrams, with all their imperfections, are the only published records, and the printed editions are long since exhausted. The city of Richmond is really situated in these ravines of the James, Shockoe, Gillies, and their connections. The profile marked A, Plate V, represents the section of the plateau

MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-I would like to add a few words of praise on Mr. Howard's work at the Old Dominion. Mr. Howard has given this particular converter shell his personal attention, and the results are shown in the figures given. Similar converter shells, a little different in shape and of about the same size, have been tried in many plants throughout the United States. The results have been highly satisfactory, but there is no shell of the size of the one described by Mr. Howard that has given anything like the results that Mr. Howard's shell has given. I know of larger shells that have given very good service, and are still in operation, and require very little repair. The main thing about the whole process of using the basic lining in copper converting is to keep the temperature within reasonable bounds, particularly not to get the furnace too hot. If it is overheated a little bit, for say half an hour, an entire lining may be ruined. It is very easy to keep the temperature regulated 'if the mass is large. If you have a large mass in your converter you can easily prevent it from getting over-heated, and that is the big argument in favor of the extra large converters. Of course, there is a limit to what a plant can turn out in the way of matte. Very few plants can supply matte sufficient to keep a converter of 20 ft. in diameter in operation constantly, but the 20-ft. converter is very much superior to the 12-ft. converter in easy handling and absolute control of the temperature. I think Mr. Howard is to be congratulated on the excellent showing he has made.

THIS paper gives a brief account of the geologic and production problems encountered in the Grass Creek oil field, the methods used in their solution, and the beneficial results obtained from the work. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance received from J. H. Pearson and Miss Ninettta A. Davis in the collection of the data and the preparation of the cross-sections. Permission for its publication was given by the officials of the Midwest Refining Co. and the Ohio Oil Co. The Grass Creek oil field is located in Ts. 98-99 W., R. 46 N., Hot Springs County, Wyo. The productive area includes about 2 1/2 mi. (4 km.) on the apex of a great anticlinal fold occupying more than 150 sq. mi. Fig. 1 shows the structural contours of the field. Oil was dicovered in the field in June, 1914; development proceeded rapidly and production rose to a maximum in 1918. The marketed production has been approximately as follows: BARRELS BARRELS 1915 94,073.5 1918 2,946,774.27 1916 1,404,183.97 1919 2,000,584.84 1917 2,780,697.51 1920 1,485,080.94 About 350 wells, 800 to 1500 ft. (243 to 457 m.) deep have been drilled to reach the upper oil sands; two companies, the Ohio Oil Co. and the Midwest Refining Co., operate the entire field.
