A study is made of the creep that can be induced in armco iron at room temperature by superposing small amplitudes of alternating torsion on a tensile creep load. It is shown that the creep differs from that in comparable tests on copper in being trmsient only. At the same time, though transient, the creep can produce extensions of some 10 pct under creep loads less than the tensile yield stress of the material. The creep can be largely suppressed b$ applying cyclic strain of suitable amplitude before applying the creep load and the metal thereby stabilized. At room temperature, plastic flow in a metal under steady load is normally limited by strain-hardening processes. However, if a small cyclic stress is superposed on the steady load these processes may be more or less neutralized and, as shown in recent investigations,'-4 plastic flow may continue. In this way annealed copper, for example, can be induced to creep continuously to fracture under loads as small as 1 tsi. Dislocation mechanisms possibly responsible for this room-temperature creep have been usefully reviewed by Feltner.But discussion so far has been based mainly on creep as it is found in close-packed metals initially in the annealed state, and their behavior may not be general. In fact, recent work shows that the form of creep in annealed copper is different from that even in cold-worked copper;7 the creep thus depends on the dislocation pattern already in a metal as well as on the metal itself. This paper describes the creep in annealed armco iron, tested in the same way as the above-mentioned copper. One object was to see how creep in a typical bcc metal compared with that in the annealed close-packed metals. Another object was to utilize the fact that a bcc metal like iron has a more pronounced elastic range than close-packed metals like copper and to find to what extent the creep load or superposed cyclic stress had to exceed their re-

Coal-cleaning plants using the launder process generally wash the fine coal (minus ? or minus 5/16-in.) separately in a plant consisting of washing launders or troughs placed one below another and sometimes supplemented by additional washing equipment such as tables and jigs. The coal and its associated impurities enter the feed end of the top launder, with a current of push water. As the material moves along the impurities, being heavier than coal, settle toward the bottom of the launder and are drawn off, with some coal, through "free discharge" boxes to the launder below. These boxes were given their name because their discharge falls freely; that is, it does not discharge into a water seal. Thus the impurities are progressively concentrated in the lower launders until box products are sufficiently free of coal to be discharged to refuse. The overflows of the upper launders go to clean coal while the overflow of the lowest launder, and perhaps that of the one immediately above, is usually recirculated to the plant feed. Thus the bulk of the clean coal is removed rapidly and the impurities are concentrated more slowly. The chief purpose of this paper is to present the cleaning data of such a plant under different operating conditions. OpeRating Equipment The washing units considered here are part of a complete plant cleaning minus 4-in. coal. The primary cleaned product is a high-quality gas and metallurgical coal and another portion of the output may be shipped as a steam coal. The units consist of two parallel Rheolaveur free-discharge units each containing five launders, together with three 7 by 14-ft. Plato tables. The launders are designated by the letters A-B-C-D-E (Fig. I), launder A being the top and longest; E being the bottom and shortest. Launder details are given in Table 1. Since 1925, when the preferred orientations in compressed aluminum were first determined1,2 the orientations have been described as a fiber texture in which a face diagonal, [110], of the face-centered cubic lattice is parallel to the compression axis. Subsequent experiments have seemed to confirm this texture,3-5 and a number of theories (recently summarized in references 6 and 7) have been proposed to explain it and to relate it to the behavior of single crystals during compression.3,8-11 The experiments reported in this paper prove that the orientations are not adequately described as quoted above—i.e., as a [110] fiber texture—although this is a first approximation to the actual texture. They also show that the texture cannot be thought of as a stable orientati011 that is reached and maintained after a sufficient amount of deformation. The actual texture, when studied in detail at successive stages of compression, indicates that a hitherto unsuspected range of orientations is present, both in the polycrystalline metal as a whole and in various individual grains in its interior, and that a state of dynamic equilibrium exists within this range. The reasons for the failure of previous theories to predict the actual texture become obvious when the heterogeneous nature of the flow is considered. In addition to the deformation texture, the manner of its development, and its theory, this paper presents data on the following related subjects: the identity of strain markings in aluminum; the orientation changes in aluminum single crystals during compression and a comparison of these with the conditions in individual grains of a polycrystalliile specimen; the origin of asterism ill deformed single crystals, which heretofore has been regarded as a distortion localized at the surfaces or slip planes; and the relation of plastic strain in individual grains ill all aggregate to the strain of the whole.

IT has been reported recently1 that the hardenability and toughness of forging steels may be improved appreciably by the use of complex deoxidizers containing titanium, aluminum, and vanadium. In the light of these results, an investigation of similar deoxidizers containing various hardening and grain-refining elements was proposed. These deoxidizers included three manganese-silicon-aluminum-titanium al- [ ] loys with and without boron and calcium, three titanium-aluminum ferroalloys with vanadium, molybdenum and zirconium, respectively, an aluminum-zirconium ferro-alloy, and plain ferroboron. Their approximate compositions are given in Table I, and the results obtained so far in the investigation of their effects on steel are presented in the later parts of this paper. METHOD OF USING DEOXIDIZERS The deoxidizers listed in Table I were used in three series of 0.40 per cent carbon steels, which were melted in a small basic-lined induction furnace and cast in the form of I7-lb. ingots about 2.75 in. square. The basic charge for each heat was 10 lb. Armco iron and 6 lb. of clean low-carbon sheet-steel scrap. When melted, this charge was deoxidized with 15 grams of ferrosilicon, then about 500 grams of pig iron was added to give the desired carbon content. After the pig iron was dissolved, nickel [ ] shot and high-carbon ferrochromium were added if required, and additions of 80 per cent high-carbon ferromanganese and 50 per cent ferrosilicon were made to provide the proper amounts of those elements. Aluminum was added to every heat 2 min. after the silicon, for grain-size control and preliminary deoxidation. One minute later the special deoxidizer was added to the clean bare surface of the molten steel, and 2 min. afterward the steel was poured into the ingot mold, using a hot-top and pipe-preventing compound after pouring to decrease the depth of the shrinkage cavity. The special deoxidizers were used mostly in the form of about ½ to ¾ -in. lumps,

A determinatioil of the hydrogen content of molten steel by means of the Vacuum-extraction method, as reported here, consists in first casting a sample of the bath in a bomb, so that the gases evolved during solidification are trapped for analysis. A portion of the cast steel sample is then prepared and heated at a temperature of 600" to 800°C. under high vacuum, and the gaser given off during this vacuum extraction (which are shown to be hydrogen), are collected and measured. Analysis of the gases evolved on solidification and the gases in the solid sample enables an accurate determination of hydrogen in the molten steel. Fig. I shows the bomb and accessories that have been found suitable for trapping the gases evolved on solidification. The bomb is made of scamless steel pipe, approximately 7 in. long by 136 in. i.d., and welded at the bottom. An ordinary pipe cap has a vacuuni-type metal stopcock threaded and brazed in its upper end. This pipe cap fits onto the bomb by means of machined threads. A flange is brazed to the pipe at the point where the cap starts to tighten up, and a rubber gasket is placed between the flange and cap. Heavy vacuum grease is used between the flange and gasket and the gasket and cap. The weight of the complete bomb and it? interval volume is known before the sample is cast. In practice, a sample of about 400 grams of steel is poured into the bomb, the funnel quickly swung out of the way, the bomb cap spun down the threads and tightened against the gasket, and the bomb set in a pail of water to keep the gasket and vacuum grease cool. It is estimated that at least 80 per cent 01 the gases evolved from the liquid sample during solidification are trapped in the bomb."

The Gold Acres outcrop was located by Lee Lakin in 1922, according to Mr. H. W. Treweek. There was no activity, however, until 1935, when prospect drifts and pits penetrated the deposit. It was then drilled by the Willow Creek Mining Company. Beginning in the late 1930s and continuing to the late 1940s more than 150 churn drill holes were drilled in the Gold Acres area. From this drilling came what is now known as the London Extension pit. Only oxidized ore amenable to cyanide vat leaching was mined during this time. Our records indicated that this period of mining removed some 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of ore at an average grade of 0.006 kg/ t (0.2 oz per st). Union Pacific and Newmont Mining Company worked in the area prior to acquisition by the Cortez Joint Venture. Union Pacific drilled a number of core holes in the area. The unoxidized nature of the ore, small tonnage, and low grade undoubtedly prevented mining at this time. From these indications of mineralization shown by previous companies, the Cortez Joint Venture developed and mined 2 Mt (2.4 million st) at 0.005 kg/t (0.15 oz per st) in the Gold Acres pit. This pit is located immediately southwest of the older London Extension pit. Cortez Gold Mines has continued to drill to the west and south of these pits along the downdip continuation of the former ore bodies. The downdip extension is unoxidized and more metallurgically difficult than the normal Carlin type ores, but, more than 2.4 Mt (2.7 million st) have been outlined. It depends now upon the gold price and milling costs to turn this mineralized area into an ore body. A possible lesson to be learned from this deposit is that continued mining success depends upon an ongoing adequately funded exploration-development-metallurgical research program. These three disciplines must always be present to locate the mineralization and to turn this mineralization into ore. [ ]

The mining possibilities of the volcanic area south of Bel-mont, Nye county, Nevada, have long been known. Some of the old-time prospectors knew that gold existed there. Its remoteness from any source of supplies, its long distances from water, the absence of game, and more, perhaps, the lack of grass for animals to subsist upon, has made this an unattractive region in which to search for mines. The decline of the Comstock mines, the exhaustion of sundry large and rich ore-bodies, the high cost of mining, marketing, and, particularly, the ruinously high freight-charges upon refractory ore that had to be shipped to distant smelters, have kept investors out of Nevada for the last few gears; and mining people have hardly yet awakened to the importance of To-nopah, Goldfield, and perhaps the newer and less developed districts. The discovery of Tonopah by J. L. Butler, who located the Mizpah claim in May, 1900, and the fortunes soon realized there, attracted many people. As the boom declined, many went away, some scattering out into the surrounding country, and the population is now about 7,000. In the fall of 1902 a discovery of gold was made 23 miles south, in what is now known as the Sandstorm group, 4 miles NW. of Goldfield. In the winter of 1903—4 the Combination, January and Florence mines were discovered, and shipments of high-grade ore soon followed. In January, 1905, there were 10,000 people in Gold-field. In June, 1904, rich gold-ore was found 85 miles SE., at the foot of the south end of the Kawich mountains, but this discovery was kept quiet until a re-location could be made. On August 10, 1904, the Bullfrog claims, and a month later the Ladd mountain and neighboring claims, were located. The Shoshone group was located September 24. This district is

Chromium is one of the new metals, but considerable research has been required to determine an approximate record of its production from 1827 until the present. Its use in the form of pure metal is not extensive; of the chromite mined, about one-half is required for making ferrochro-mium, about two-fifths goes directly into refractories and the remainder is absorbed chiefly by the chemical trades. The industries that demand chromite for such uses are mainly in countries that produce little chromite, while the important chromite-producing countries are not generally consumers. The international flow of chromite is therefore of interest, as well as the political and commercial control of resources of the metal. World Production The first mining of chromite is said to have occurred as early as 1820, at the Roros deposit in Norway, but the first well-established output came from the Reed mine, in Maryland, about 1827. Thereafter the United States led the world in chromite production until 1860, when Turkey took the lead. Russia in turn became the chief producer from 1897 to 1902, inclusive. From 1903 to 1909, New Caledonia held first place, but alternated with Southern Rhodesia from 1910 to 1917, inclusive. In 1918, 1919 and 1920-1921, the United States, India and New Caledonia led, respectively. In 1922 Southern Rhodesia assumed first place and has since continued to be the world's foremost producer by a large margin. Fig. 1 illustrates the production of the leading countries from 1890 to 1929, inclusive. Fig. 2 shows the world production of chromite from 1890 to 1929, inclusive, in long tons and Table 2 gives the production by countries for the same period. The total world production for the 103 years, 1827 to 1929, ipclusive, is estimated at about 7,100,000 long tons, distributed as shown in Table 1. An analysis is presented to show that the formation of rolling textures in fcc metals can be rationalized in terms of flow mechanisms operative during the rolling process. First, a general approach used by Calnan is followed, where the rolling process is approximated on the basis of two axes, p and Q. In this treatement there are two separate sets of slip systems, one for each axis, and it is shown that a homogeneous rotation can he achieved by restricting the slip systems for the two axes to share common slip directions Then, two criteria are used to select the active slip systems for the axis P: they must have relatively high resoloed shear stresses, and dislocations on these slip systems must interact attractively in order to lower total energy content Finally, a method of analysis is introduced to locate the end position of an axis by knowing its acti7.e slip systems. The result of the analysis indi- cates that two main flow mechanisms operate in fcc metals. The ideal orientation derived from one oj-them is (8 13 21) (21 8 13) which is very close to the (358) (523) orientation observed experimentally on the rolling texture of copper. This flow mechanism should only he operative in metals containing dislocations extended into partials separated by less than five times their lattice parameter. The ideal orientations derived from the other flow mechanism are a combination of (1 10} (112) and a spread of orientations with (110) parallel to the rolling plane. This type of ideal orientations corresponds to those observed in the rolling texture of silver 30:70 brass, and binary alloys with high alloying content. This flow mechanism should be operative in any fcc metal regardless of its stacking-fauIt energy. THE Sunrise iron mine of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation is in Platte County, Wyoming, about 110 miles north of Cheyenne. It is served by the company-owned Colorado and Wyoming Railway, which connects with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and the Colorado and Southern railways at Guernsey, Wyoming, a distance of 6 miles from the mine. The original Sunrise claims were staked mainly by United States Army officers and soldiers stationed at old Fort Laramie, because of small showings of copper in the Carboniferous limestones that form a horizontal capping overlying the Huronian iron ore. A small copper smelter was operated for about three years at Fairbanks, now an abandoned town on the North Platte River. As many of the copper shafts and test pits near the present Sunrise mine were deepened, they penetrated the capping and encountered iron ore or gray sericitic schist, and were abandoned. Evidence of an early interest in iron ore was found when the Chicago claim was stripped for mining. A narrow, winding crevice was discovered, which led downward 20 ft. through the capping to the underlying soft red hematite, in which a room 10 by 14 by 7 ft. had been excavated. Stone hammers and wedges and a few rusted pieces of iron were found on the floor, and the evidence is conclusive that the excavation was used up to rather recent times by Sioux Indian medicine men, to provide war paint. GEOLOGY AND ORE The Sunrise district is in the Hartville uplift, an anticlinal area in which pre-Cambrian rocks similar to those of the Black Hills and the Laramie Mountains are brought to the surface. The lowest part of the pre-Cambrian series exposed is a great thickness of pink, crystalline, Huronian dolomites with thin unstratified beds of schist and quartzite. This paper is a discussion of the extremely valuable one of Mathewson and Phillips, The Recrystallization of Cold-Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing,1 which not only gives us a wealth of important data reached with great intelligence, but also shows both uncommon powers of imagination and a perfectly fair spirit. Let me try to analyze some of their results, and to enunciate some of the laws to which these results point. For brevity I refer to them as "The Authors." The page numbers in parentheses refer to their paper. 1. The Visible Aspects of Recrystallization.—Plastic deformation in a single direction, as in cold-rolling, draws the grains out in that direction, that is, inequiaxes them, without destroying their apparent individuality. Each grain seems to endure the drawing out without changing either its volume or its orientation materially, for the etching tint of each grain seems to be as uniform after as before the drawing out, save for the "etch bands,"2 shown in Figs. A to D of the Authors' Plate I. As the drawn-out metal is heated progressively, on reaching a certain "disintegration temperature" these old grains seem to break up, probably into submicroscopic fragments, and this apparent disintegration is followed by a coalescence of these fragments, so that their number decreases and their size increases, till they may become very much coarser than before the drawing out. Ruder3 coarsened the grains of silicon steel in this way till single grains reached an area of 50 cm. (7.75 sq. in.). The deformation itself probably breaks each grain up into many very small fragments, but the fact that each grain continues to have a uniform etching tint different from that of its neighbors indicates that these fragments retain the initial common orientation of the grain. The apparent disintegration which we observe, then, is rather an abandonment of community of orientation for individuality of orientation, by the fragments formed earlier during the deformation. COPPER base alloys containing various amounts of aluminum and silicon are of considerable commercial interest. In particular the alloy containing 7 pct aluminum and 2 pct silicon shows an attractive combination of high strength with excellent machinability. Since there is no evidence in the literature that this ternary system has been studied since the recognition by Smith1 and Anderson2 in 1939 of the kappa phase of the binary copper-silicon system, the determination of the equilibrium phase relationships in the copper corner of the ternary diagram has been undertaken to provide a fundamental basis for understanding the behavior of these alloys. Phase boundaries have been determined by the micrographic examination of quenched samples while points on the liquidus surface have been obtained by thermal analysis. The results, of sufficient precision to serve their major purpose of providing a guide for the control of the manufacture of alloys in the region covered, are presented in a series of both isothermal and vertical sections of the diagram. ALLOYS STUDIED For a rough survey of the copper corner of this ternary system the compositions listed in Table I (Series A) were employed. The results of examinations of these alloys indicated that the compositions listed in Table 2 (Series B) would further clarify regions of greater complexity. All alloys were prepared as 1200 g heats, the copper being melted under charcoal, and then first silicon and then aluminum were added. An [ ] excess of 0.05 pct silicon was allowed to cover deoxidation losses. Two small bars 5/8 by 1 ¼ by 1 ¼ in. were cast using Durville type casting equipment. Analyses were made on all alloys using material which was hot-rolled at 800 or 850°C and annealed 17 hr at 650°C. All analyses were found to be within 0.05 pct of the nominal composition. Since the precision of analysis is not much better than this, the points of both isothermal sections and vertical sections at fixed aluminum and silicon contents have been plotted at the compositions indicated by the nominal composition.

RECENT years have seen great progress in drilling practices. The partial change from heavy drills and stopers to lightweight airleg machines has had great impact on stoping and drifting methods. The change was sparked, of course, when the Germans applied tungsten carbide to drill bits during World War II. This invention made it possible to drill nearly cylindrical blastholes, with a very mini- mum of drill steel changes, so that small fast-cutting bits* could be used without sacrifice of powder-loading density at the bottom of the hole. This is one of the few instances of increased efficiency through reduction in size. Usually the opposite is true. Application of these lightweight drills and small bits has lessened the vibratory stresses set up in the drill steel rod, and rod breakage has been greatly reduced. During the past several years phenomenal reduction in drill steel breakage has resulted from the use of carburized rods. These rods are now supplied by several manufacturers, with carburization of both the exterior and interior surfaces of the hollow drill steel. The rods are heat-treated over their entire length after the completion of bit connections, collars, or lugs (in the case of 7/8 Hex and round steel). This eliminates breakage from the usual metallurgical notch existing in conventional rods-there are instances of more than 2000 ft of drilling in hard ground before breakage. Steel rod failure results from fatigue checks, at right angles to the rod axis, progressing to a point where parting or breaking of the rod occurs. There are many of these checks in a used rod. Only the most advanced check causes the break, but with a small additional amount of drilling another check advances to the breakage point, and most of the value of reconditioning is lost. Since the development of carburized rods, the practice of discarding drill rods after the first break may be economically justified.

A practical program of education for workers of the mining industries is being formulated by the Federal Board for Vocational Education in cooperation with the states in which this industry is a dominant one. The Federal Government last year passed a law, known as the Federal Vocational Education Act, that provides for the promotion of vocational education and for cooperation with the states in the promotion of such education in agriculture and trades and industries and in the preparation of teachers of vocational subjects. More than 1,000,000 men in the continental United States are employed in mines and quarries. The meeting of the needs of the coal-mining industry, therefore, is the problem of greatest importance in the point of numbers to be served. Moreover, the dangers in coal mining are greater than in metal mining. Practically all states have set up educational and technical standards for the position of foreman, boss, superintendent, etc., and every applicant for these positions must have a certificate of competency. The qualifications, too, are becoming increasingly difficult in the field of technical information. In some states, every miner must have a certificate, which is issued by the mine examining board only after an oral examination. THE practice of drying phosphate in Florida is as old as the industry, which began a little more than half a century ago. The methods, however, have changed considerably. At first, the natural process of exposure to the sun and air was used, later supplemented by wood fires beneath open-air stationary dry kilns and drying towers of various designs. It was not until the early nineties that rotary driers came into use, and at first they were of very small design and fired with wood. As the industry grew and tonnage increased, so likewise grew the number and size of rotary driers, until today the largest installations are 6 ft. up to 7 ft. 6 in. in diameter, and 55 to 60 ft. long, fired with crude oil. The reasons for drying phosphate rock are: (1) to eliminate freight on water in the shipment and (2) to facilitate the good grinding qualities required by the buyers in their acidulation. Phosphate pebbles vary materially in natural characteristics and each property has a direct bearing on the processing. In making comparisons of cost and operating conditions, the following are usually taken into consideration: 1. The hard dense pebbles, which contain very little interior moisture and 6 to 8 per cent total moisture, usually produced from the low-grade deposits. 2. The lighter, porous pebbles, which contain 4 to 5 per cent interior moisture and a total moisture ranging from 9 to 15 per cent. 3. The product of recovery operations using oily reagents, containing from 15 to 25 per cent moisture. 4. The size of the pebbles. Usually the plus 5-mesh material is considered as "coarse rock"; the minus 5-mesh plus 24-mesh is "fine rock," and the minute particles below 24 mesh are called "concentrate." 5. The amount of moisture allowed in the dried product. The practice is generally to dry down to 1.5 to 2 per cent moisture. There is, however, an actual range in guarantee of from 1 per cent maximum to 3 per cent maximum.

At the time flotation appeared upon the metallurgical horizon in Arizona, the writer, under the direction of Dr. Ricketts, was engaged in remodeling and enlarging the No. 6 Concentration Plant of the Arizona Copper Co. at Morenci, and the work had been in progress nearly a year before the Inspiration experiments with flotation had disclosed the revolution in concentration that was at that time impending. The simplified flow sheet worked out for the remodeling of the Morenci plant had been based upon the removal of the freed metal in a minimum number of stages by treatment upon tables equipped with Butchart riffles, the latter being adapted to accomplish both classification of feed and removal of the metal at one operation, substantially as described in my previous paper.l The scheme of treatment for the slime was based upon the well-known fact that after copper sulphides, such as chalcocite and chalcopy-rite, etc., are reduced to a certain extremely fine state of comminution they are definitely beyond the reach of separation upon any of the concentrating devices then known. By using drag-belt classifiers (which served as conveyors as well as separators), the overflow ,would be of the usual "slimes" class. Experiment had shown that when these drag-belt overflows were properly diluted (that is, to about 5 to 7 per cent. solids in the feed under treatment) the very fine sand, and especially the very fine but still granular sulphide particles, would, if given a short distance to fall, quickly settle out in prime condition to yield an excellent recovery on vanners; a further valuable feature would be that the very fine non-separable final overflow tonnage might be discharged direct to tailing, thus conserving space requirements so as to permit within the old building, without embarrassment, the increase of capacity required.
