The development of the Hauto power plant and the claims made by various engineers that electricity was more economical than steam for power purposes in and about the mines, led the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co., in 1911, to conduct a test to ascertain the consumption of power used by a large steam hoisting engine. The question being one on which no reliable information could be found, and the opinion of various engineers differing to such an extent, it was decided that a test under actual operating conditions was necessary. This was arranged for at one of the collieries. The engine selected was 2 30 by 60-in. (76.2 by 152.4-cm.) piston-valve engine of modern type, and comparatively new. The boiler plant from which the hoist received its power was about 600 ft. (182 m.) from the engine, the latter being fed by a 10-in. (25.4-cm.) steam line insulated with magnesia pipe covering. Two batteries of the boiler plant, aggregating 1200 hp., were cut off and fed into a separate steam line leading direct to the hoist engine. Steam auxiliaries, consisting of feed-water pump and blowers, were fed by the boilers in test, and their consumption charged against the hoist. A barrel weighing device was installed, as it was felt that this would be the most accurate way of determining the consumption of water. The fuel, No. 3 buckwheat, was carefully weighed, and every precaution was taken to make the test accurate in every particular. The test was run for 1 week, or a total of 168 hr. A record was kept of the number of trips hoisted or lowered, and continuous indicator cards were taken. One particular set of cards was taken with the hoist operating balanced, and also with the hoist operating with no counterweight other than the empty cage, the coal in the car being weighed. The speed of the hoist was taken by means of a graphic recording instrument which registered the number of revolutions every 5 sec. From this record, speed-time curves were plotted.

Since so many different curves have been published for the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum, it seems desirable to definitely establish the correct curve by two or more independent methods. The curve published in part I1t was based entirely upon X-ray measurements because the other methods employed at that time were not satisfactory. The present paper (the seventeenth of this series on high-purity aluminum alloys) describes the determination of the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum by the measurement of electrical resistivity at temperature and by microscopic examination. Since the publication of our part I in 1932, an investigation of the solubility relations in the aluminum-zinc system has been reported by Schmid and Wassermann2, who obtained their solubility results from lattice-parameter measurements on heat-treated and quenched specimens. The diagram that they published is shown in Fig. 1. In this investigation they also found by X-ray measurements that the parameter of the gamma phase changed continuously with zinc content and at such a rate that it would be identical with that of the beta phase at 60 atomic per cent zinc. It was concluded therefore that the beta and gamma phases, from the point of view of structural relationship, are one single phase. They also suggested a gap of immiscibility between 270" and 350" C. The complete boundary in this region could not be determined satisfactorily by the method employed and therefore was not shown in their diagram. Aluminum-zinc Alloys Materials Used.—Electrolytically refined aluminum3 was used in preparing the alloys for the work reported in this paper. Chemical analysis showed the following impurities: 0.004 to 0.005 per cent silicon, 0.006 to 0.008 per cent iron and 0.005 to 0.006 per cent copper. Also,

THE development of the cube-on-edge secondary re-crystallization texture in Si-Fe strip depends upon the ability of inclusions to restrain normal grain growth. This ability is determined by the number and size of inclusions, which, for a given composition, is controlled by the thermal history of the material during the prior processing.' It has been shown2 that increasing the silicon content decreases the solubility of sulfur, and it is the purpose of this note to show the consequences of this decreased solubility for secondary recrystallization. Heats were made as previously described and cast into graphite molds.' The compositions are shown in Table I. Slabs 1 in. thick were cut from the ingots and either hot-rolled from 1000°C in the as-cast condition or after one of the heat treatments described later. The processing to the final gage of 12 mils followed the previous procedure.' To avoid cracking, the 5.2 pct Si alloy was cold-rolled at 150" to 200°C rather than at room temperature. Copper-calcium alloys are of interest as materials for use in deoxidized conductors of high conductivity. That calcium is effective in deoxidizing and degasifying copper is well known. Brandenberg and Wiensl have described the use of calcium in the casting of sound copper and state that the deoxidation can be carried out without difficulty. The castings that they prepared were sound and sufficiently ductile to permit wire drawing. Pratt,2 in British Patent No. 1699 (1907), has claimed the use of calcium for the deoxidation and degasification of copper. Masing3

With solvent extraction now being accepted as a major method for recovering copper from leach liquors, the authors' company decided that in tankhouse design full advantage was not being taken of the benefits available from sol- vent extraction produced electrolytes. Consequently, a major development program was undertaken to examine means of operating such tankhouses with current densities in excess of current electrowinning practice. Techniques investigated included high circulation of liquors, current reversal and the application of ultrasonics. At the same time there was a necessity for improving the quality of cathodes produced from electrolytes of high free acid content. The application of anodes which are capable of reducing or eliminating the lead content of cathodes is described in the paper. The other problem area in eletrowinning from solvent extraction produced electrolytes is the production of a higher degree of acid mist. Techniques for alleviating this problem are described bearing in mind their possible effects on the solvent extraction section of the plant.

The side-blown converter has been investigated as a possible commercial process for the production of low nitrogen steel. During this work, two converters of 3-ton and 22-ton capacity were operated on a pilot plant basis for a total of 214 heats. The steel made in these converters was low in nitrogen and possessed good cold working properties. Some problems of converter operation remain to be solved. IN plants operating with a high iron capacity, sev-eral different refining methods are used in the conversion of the molten pig iron to steel. These include various ore practices in stationary and tilting open-hearths, the duplex process employing the Bessemer converter and open-hearth, and the Bessemer process. At J&L, a considerable part of the iron produced is handled by the Bessemer process, either alone or in conjunction with duplexing, and therefore an appreciable portion of the steelmaking research effort has centered about the method. This paper covers research work on the development of the side-blow converter for the commercial production of low nitrogen ingots and includes descriptions of the operation of a 3-ton and a 22-ton experimental converter at the Aliquippa Works. The refining of iron to produce steel requires the removal of a large portion of the carbon and silicon and the control of manganese, phosphorus and sulphur which are present in the iron in varying amounts. The first large-scale means of refining iron was the acid Bessemer process which was brought into use almost 100 yr ago. This method, using compressed air as the refining medium, accomplishes substantially complete removal of carbon, manganese and silicon. Phosphorus and sulphur are not affected but, by choice of an iron composition sufficiently low in these elements, a commercial product can be produced. Since the process will handle large tonnages rapidly, operates without external fuel and with a minimum of additional equipment, it quickly became the major tool in the early expansion of the steel industry. Later, the basic open-hearth process, by affording control of phosphorus and sulphur and by consuming the large quantities of steel scrap that were becoming available, forced the acid Bessemer process into a secondary position in the industry. During the past two decades the demand for steel to be used in cold forming and drawing operations has gradually increased. Bessemer steel, because of its work hardening and aging characteristics, is not as suitable for these applications as basic open-hearth steel, consequently the decline of the process was accelerated. More recently, because of changing economic conditions, this long range trend appears to have been arrested or perhaps reversed. Ingot production data for recent years furnishes only an incomplete picture of the importance of the converter in the American steel industry; open-hearth furnaces utilize large tonnages of blown metal for which no published statistics are available. Metallurgical Aspects The fundamental difference between Bessemer and open-hearth steels apparently lies not in the method of manufacture but, rather, in the differences in chemical composition of the two steels. It is further believed that the principal features distinguishing Bessemer from open-hearth steel are the higher nitrogen and phosphorus contents of the former. Evidence supporting this position is supplied by tests on laboratory induction furnace heats that were made to contain varying amounts of phosphorus and nitrogen but were otherwise similar to normal low carbon silicon-killed steels. Fig. 1, 2 and 3, summarizing the test results, are taken from G. H. Enzian's paper titled, "Some Effects of Phosphorus and Nitrogen on the Properties of Low Carbon Steels."' Fig. l indicates that phosphorus has a marked effect on the cold work embrittlement of steel as shown by the work brittleness test of Graham and Work.' In the low nitrogen steels, which as a group have the better cold working properties, the effect of phosphorus variations is the more pronounced.

Stacking fault energies and annealing twin frequencies have been measured for austenitic stainless steels having a) constant 20 wt pct Cr and varying nickel contents, and b) constant 20 wt pct Ni and varying chromium contents. The effect of nitrogen has also been studied and, to a lesser extent, so has the effect of carbon. All measured stacking fault energies plot linearly against the corresponding annealing twin frequencies, suggesting that, for constant prior deformation and grain size, twinning frequency can be used to estimate stacking fault energy. Compositions low in nickel possess the lowest fault energy, while the maximum fault energy within the investigated composition range occurs mound 20 pct Cr-20 pct Ni. Nitrogen has practically no effect on stacking fault energy when increased from 0.005 to 0.05 wt pct, although Planar dislocation glide is associated with higher nitrogen contents; this may be a short-range order effect. Carbon may raise the stacking fault energy a little, and causes pronounced dislocation tangling in deformed alloys. The basically different dislocation structures promoted by nitrogen and carbon, respectively, are not associated with large variations in stacking fault energy, and the reason for the difference remains unknown. INTEREST in the dislocation configurations developed in plastically deformed alloys arises principally from a desire for an understanding of mechanisms of plastic deformation and fracture. Comparatively little basic work has been concerned with austenitic stainless steels, although considerable interest has developed in the fundamental aspects of deformation of these alloys since the suggestion that those compositions deforming essentially by planar glide are particularly prone to transgranular stress corrosion cracking.' Certain facts are well-established. An 18 Cr-8 Ni steel (type 304) has a low stacking fault energy which is increased by higher nickel contents, and the structure of these steels when moderately plastically deformed changes concomitantly from planar to less planar to distinctly tangled dislocation configurations. These changes are thought to relate to changes in stacking fault energy, and considerable effort has been expended in measuring stacking fault energies of austenitic stainless steels through the determination of node curvatures2"4 even though the method has limitations due to formula approximations,5 an upper limit of measurement of 50 erg cm-2 at the most,5 and the necessity of an extremely meticulous experimental technique. Therefore, it is not surprising that only qualitative agreement between different investigators is generally to be found.'-' At high energies where node radius measurements are inappropriate, some use has been made of annealing twin frequencies to estimate relative stacking fault energies, although a recent critical evaluation of the method suggests that it should be used cautionsly with due regard to effects of grain size and prior deformation.6 Finally, there is a question as to whether the structures of some deformed steels are due to ordering effects. In particular, the role of nitrogen in promoting planar dislocation motion has been suggested to be due to ordering,' but similar suggestions have been made for steels having low interstitial contents.4 EXPERIMENTAL Small ingots of austenitic stainless steels (-50 g) were prepared from components exceeding 99.99 pct purity, the nickel and chromium being Johnson Matthey "Specpure" metals. Inasmuch as the higher grade potash deposits are rapidly being depleted, it is important that economic beneficiation techniques be developed for recovering potassium compounds from lower grade sylvite ores and deposits containing clay materials. The Federal Bureau of Mines has conducted research to develop processes for heavy liquid concentration of potash ores, This method of concentration is discussed, and results of tests made on potash ores from New Mexico are presented. The tests demonstrated the technical feasibility of producing near commercial-grade potash concentrates, with a high recovery of the contained sylvite. The concentration of minerals based on their differences in specific gravity dates back to the very beginning of mineral dressing, and the use of heavy liquids in the laboratory to achieve optimum mineral separations has been utilized for many years. With the advent of froth flotation and its success, the incentive to develop new processes has remained relatively dormant. However, flotation refinements in the nonmetallic ores have not progressed as rapidly as in metallic (sulfide) ores because of the complexity of the deposits and the chemical similarities of the minerals.

This paper presents the development of and results from a computer model of in situ uranium leaching. This model uses a streamline-concentration balance approach and is useful with a wide range of reservoirs. It can be used with any type of well system, in a reservoir with or without boundaries, and with any form of descriptive kinetics. The model also includes the effects of dispersion and consumption of oxidant by minerals other than uranium. The effects of areal sweep, variable uranium concentrations, variable permeability, and the presence of oxidant consumers on uranium production are shown and discussed.

THEORIES of fracture in metals have been based primarily on the dependence of fracture strength on grain size. This dependence was first observed by Masing and Polanyi.l These workers, as well as 0rowan12 and Davidenkov and Wittman,' thought the grain size could be equated with the crack size in the Griffith condition for crack propagation.4 In this way they could account for the observed proportionality between fracture stress and the reciprocal square root of the grain size. The chief results of recent investigations of the fracture strength of polycrystals are summarized in Fig. 1. Low for iron,5 Petch for iron,' Greenwood and Quarrel for zinc, Petch and Zein for zinc,' and Hauser, Landon, and Dorn for magnesium'' have all found that the fracture stress of a polycrystal is proportional to the reciprocal square root of the grain size. Also, they find that, for large grain sizes, the fracture stress lies near the extrapolation of the yield-stress curve determined at small grain sizes; where measurable plastic strain precedes fracture. Low9 has gone a step further and shown that, in Range 1, the fracture stress in tension is almost identical to the yield stress in compression for a given grain size. Homes and Gouzou, 10 and Low also have shown that, in Range 2 of Fig. 1, microcracks form when the yield stress is reached, but they do not cause failure until the stress reaches a much higher value. The fact that yielding always precedes fracture suggests that fracture is induced by plastic flow. A mechanism by which this might occur was first proposed by Zener.11 He pointed out that blocked dislocations would cause stress concentrations which might cause fracture. The blocking would be caused by grain boundaries. This idea has been developed by Eshelby, Frank, and Nabarro,12 by Koehler,13 and by Stroh.14 By means of etchpits blocked dislocations have been observed in brass by Jacquet,15 in zinc by Gilman,16 and in lithium fluoride by Gilman and johnston. The blocked-dislocation theory and the experiments that bear on it have been summarized by Mott.18 One of the strong points of the blocked-dislocation theory is that it can explain the grain-size dependence of the fracture stress in a natural way. However, Low9 has pointed out that the theory is not satisfying when it is considered quantitatively. Gilman10 also has criticized the theory and presented an alternative interpretation of the relation between fracture stress and grain size. Since the blocked-dislocation theory is not the only theory that can explain in the grain-size effect, it is necessary to find other evidence either to support or deny it. In this investigation the following points were studied: 1) If blocked dislocations normally cause fracture, then the fracture stress ought to be very high in the absence of plastic glide. Is it? 2) If dislocations must be blocked in order for metals to fracture, then certain types of grain

Campbell and Martin1 described a new exploratory logging tool which was developed as the result of a new concept of the phenomenon that takes place when a porous formation containing mobile hydrocarbons and irreducible interstitial water is invaded by mud filtrate. They postulate that invasion will create a bank of interstitial water between the flushed zone and the undisturbed formation. This postulate was confirmed by Wyllie.' Thus, if R,, is greater than R, and mobile hydrocarbons are present, the resistivity profile with increasing radii from the borehole is high:low:high, as shown in Fig. 1. If mobile hydrocarbons are absent, the bank of interstitial water is indistinguishable from the undisturbed formation and the resistivity profile, when R is greater than R,, is high:low, as shown in Fig. 2. The zone containing the bank of interstitial water and residual oil was named the "low zone". Campbell and Martin conducted extensive electrolytic wedge and resistivity analog model studies to select a logging system that would reflect the presence or absence of the low zone. The system they selected was that of a family of lateral curves. The model studies indicated that the presence of a low zone could be detected in approximately 60 to 70 per cent of the producing sand reservoirs with a family of lateral curves provided that the sonde effectively occupies 90 per cent of the diameter of the hole. These studies were conducted with D, = 5d. The presence or absence of the low zone is best determined by a plot of the apparent resistivity vs spacing as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. A dip or inflection in the profile that repeats at successive depth intervals is considered diagnostic. To reduce the shunting effect of the hole and mud, a sonde of insulating material that is surrounded by a series of flexible rubber bumpers was designed. The bumper efficiency is considered to be the ratio of the bumper diameter to the hole diameter. Field tests conducted by Campbell and Martin on 10 wells with a tool that provided for station readings indicated that dips or inflections could be detected in 19 out of 25 known producing zones. INSTRUMENT DEVELOPMENT Halliburton developed a logging system to simultaneously and continuously record eight lateral curves. The instrumentation is described in the literature.' Direct Reduced Iron is a product obtained during solid state reduction of iron oxides into metallic iron. General chemical and physical characteristics of all direct reduced iron materials result in a noticeable reoxidation tendency and a relatively low ignition temperature. As most of the chemical reactions are exothermic, normally heating occurs and if water is present hydrogen evolves. Dry direct reduced iron deactivates quickly in air but is still reactive if it comes into contact with moisture. Because of these characteristics, special requirements are necessary for safe storage, shipment, and handling. In an effort to improve this situation passivation techniques were and still are being developed. The paper discusses the properties of direct reduced iron, presents past experience with storage, shipment, and handling of MIDREX® Iron, a direct reduced iron material produced in the MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process, and evaluates benefits derived from different passivation techniques.

If interfacial equilibrium is maintained at the interface between a growing precipitate and the supersaturated matrix, so that solute diffusion alone determines the growth rate, the precipitate shape should evolve toward that characteristic of the dendrites found in solidification. However, this shape is rarely observed in precipitation reactions proceeding at high temperatures where interfacial equilibrium is usually felt to prevail. Thus some other stabilizing factor must enter, to keep the interface smooth. It is shown that a slow interfacial reaction (low interfacial mobility) will stabilize the interface, while transformation stresses have a IN studying the kinetics of phase transformations such as solidification or proeutectoid precipitation at high temperatures, it is customary to assume that equilibrium exists across the interface and that the rate of the reaction is determined by the rate at which heat and solute diffuse to and from the interface. In the case of precipitation, such an assumption predicts an almost infinite rate of initial growth. It is generally stated that the rate cannot be infinite and that during some initial period the rate must be determined not by solute diffusion but by an interfacial reaction, i.e., transferring atoms across the interface. The duration of this much weaker stabilizing eFfect and impurities tend to enhance instability. It is also concluded that a sets an upper limit on the wavelength of the perturbation that can give instability. Thus initially all flat or smoothly curved particle interfaces will be stable even if their growth is diffusion-controlled. Proeutectoid precipitation in the Fe-C system is considered in some detail and it is shown that the experimental results can only be rationalized if the growth rate of ferrite in steel transformations is determined by a slow interfacial reaction for all hut a few orientations between the two phases. initial period has never been clearly established, but it is generally assumed to be too short to affect any measurable results.' Several authors have pointed out that in the case of interfacial equilibrium any bump in the surface will grow out ahead of the planar interface due to the higher gradient in front of it.2j3 Thus the interface will be unstable with respect to an irregular interface with points (plates) propagating rapidly out ahead of the interface into the supersaturated phase. Recently, Mullins and Sekerka have given equations for the stabilizing effect of surface tenion.~ They found that for particles with a radius of curvature of 1 p or greater the stabilizing effect of surface tension will be completely overcome by a supercooling, or supersaturation, of as little as

When the component grains of .ferritic hicrystals of an Fe-1.55 pct Si alloy are disoriented through an angle "6 " about a conzmon [ll0] axis, the tendency for preferential growth of austenite crystals along the grain boundary during transformation at elevated temperatures is small when 11 deg, but increases rapidly at larger angles. This type of orientation-dependence indicates that grain boundary diffdsion promotes preferential growth along large-angle boundaries. Morphological differences between austenite crystals formed at small-angle [1101 and [loo] boundaries suggest that precipitate morphology can be dependent on the dislocation structure of the boundary. ThE morphology of precipitate crystals nucleated at a grain boundary can be significantly affected by the structure of the boundary.' The limited amount of experimental evidence available in the literature indicates that the morphological effects of boundaries made up of arrays of dislocations, such as subbound-aries and small-angle grain boundaries, are different from those of boundaries having essentially disordered structures, i.e., large-angle grain boundaries. On the basis of indirect evidence, it has been concluded that large-angle grain boundaries give rise to the formation of grain boundary allotriomorphs (crystals which nucleate at grain boundaries, and grow preferentially and more or less smoothly along them)2 in the proeutectoid ferrite and the proeutec-toid cementite reactions in plain-carbon steels, and apparently also in many non-ferrous alloys.' At small-angle grain boundaries in a plain carbon steel, on the other hand, ferrite crystals were found to take the form of primary side plates. Similarly, Guinie, loys. Primary sideplates formed at a subboundary with a constant orientation tend to be parallel to only one, or occasionally two matrix habit planes, and a marked change in the orientation of the boundary is accompanied by a change in the habit plane. Previous studies on the morphological effects of grain boundary structure were performed on poly-crystalline aggregates. Information on the disorien-tation of the pairs of grains forming the boundaries at which the various morphologies appeared in these specimens was largely either qualitative or semi-quantitative. Precipitate morphologies accordingly could not be accurately and systematically correlated with grain boundary structure, and thus theories which have been proposed for the various morphological effects could not be satisfactorily tested. This investigation was undertaken in an attempt to remedy these deficiencies by studying the morphological effects of grain boundary structure with a method in which the boundaries are formed by matrix grains whose disorientations are known and controlled with reasonable accuracy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The crystallographic requirements of this study were fulfilled by means of oriented bicrystals of silicon-iron. Disorientation of the component ferrite crystals was carried out about common, major crystallographic axes through angles ranging from 1/2 to 44 deg. The silicon content was low enough SO that the bicrystals could be partially transformed to austenite by heating to elevated temperatures. The silicon-iron used had the following initial composition: 1.55 pct Si, 0.04 pct C, 0.0031 pct N, 0.17 pct Mn, 0.020 pct S, and 0.002 pct P. The alloy was obtained in the form of 0.036-in. sheet. The procedures employed to prepare seed crystals in strips of this sheet, to reorient the seeds, and to grow them into bicrystals are essentially those described by Dunn and Nonken and aynes." The characteristics of the bicrystals are given in Table I. The "bicrystal type" indicates the crystallographic plane parallel to the broad faces of the strip in both grains and the crystallographic direction which was parallel to the long edges of the strip in both grains prior to disorientation. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) THE manifold inconveniences resulting from the absence of a uniform standard of mass for determining the weight of precious stones have long been obvious. This lack has been keenly felt in commercial transactions, and those who have devoted time and research to the study of historic diamonds and precious stones have had frequent occasion to deplore the absence of such a standard in the past. In a paper read in Chicago in 1893, before the International Congress of Weights and Measures, held in connection with the World's Columbian Exposition, the writer suggested dividing the carat into 100 parts, and constituting a standard international carat of 200 mg. ; that is, 5 diamond carats or 20 pearl grains to a French gram, making 5,000 carats or 20,000 pearl grains to a kilogram. He also called attention to the fact that while this would depreciate the present diamond carat or pearl grain only about 2.5 per cent., it would abolish the troublesome discrepancies between the various carat-weights now in use, and could be easily explained and understood everywhere.1 The subject of the various diamond carats, their incongruity, and the resulting confusion as to the correct weights of historic gems when definite records of them are searched for, has been fully treated by me in an extensive study of this subject in The Book of the Pearl.2 To the earnest and unremitting efforts of C. E. Guillaume, Director of the Bureau Internationale des Poids et Mesures at Sèvres, is largely clue the eventual success of this eminently desirable reform, which lie has constantly urged both by articles on the subject and by addresses delivered in Paris before the International Committee for Weights and Measures.3

Discussion Of the paper Of GEORGE K. BURGESS, J. J. CROWE, H. S. RAWDON, and R. G. WALTENBERG, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin NO. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2433 to 2437. ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.-The Bureau of Standards has once more rendered a public service. Manufacturers and consumers of steel rails alike should welcome the important results now laid before them by Dr. Burgess and his co-workers. Personally I welcome these results all the more that in the past, as some of the members may remember, I have never failed, when occasion arose, to call the attention of rail manufacturers to the importance of controlling the finishing temperature of their rails. The pioneer metallographic work conducted at the South Works of the Illinois Steel Co. in the early '90s clearly brought out the close relations existing between the manufacture, properties, and finishing temperature of steel rails and I think I may say without fear of being contradicted that the results of this early investigation had considerable influence in drawing the attention of manufacturers to the importance of finishing temperature and of heat treatment in general. The results now before us should be, it seems to me, of great value to rail manufacturers in their efforts to produce a better and, above all, a safer rail. It seems to be demonstrated in this paper that there is no difficulty in installing in rail mills pyrometric outfits, making it possible to record, without interfering in the mill operations, the temperature of the rails as they leave the finishing rolls, or of the ingots as they are withdrawn from the soaking pits, or at any intermediate point in the process of manufacture. The inference necessarily follows that manufacturers should see to it that such pyrometric installations are made, in order that they may actually know, instead of guessing at, the temperature of their rails;, and, for obvious reasons, rail consumers should insist upon such installations. In the rolling of heavy sections especially should care be taken to lower their finishing temperature, seeing that the present tendency is to finish them at higher temperature, whereas, owing to the slower cooling of their central portions, which makes for coarseness of grain, they should, if anything, be finished at a lower temperature than lighter rails.

I. INTRODUCTION. AMONG the industrial enterprises which have, from time to time, been undertaken in our Dominion, few have been more uniformly unsuccessful than those which have had for their object the development of our mineral resources. These resources have not been regarded as insignificant. On the contrary, it is supposed that we possess in our ore deposits something more than mere points of mineralogical interest. Some people are enthusiastic enough to believe that our mineral wealth will yet occasion the establishment in our backwoods of happy and industrious communities, causing, in fact, our wilderness to blossom as the rose. These enthusiasts do not shut their eyes to the serious obstacles which at every stage interfere with the carrying out of mining enterprises in this country, and which tempt one to believe that no such enterprise can ever be conducted to a desirable end, but they entertain the conviction that as our capitalists, miners, and technologists reach the years of discretion, and handle our mines in an economical, vigorous, and judicious manner, and as our statesmen become alive to the necessity of fostering, without extremely protecting, our metallurgical industries, mines and furnaces will gradually prosper, and so develop as to become a tower of strength to our agricultural, manufacturing, and mercantile interests. The fact that our past experience does not generally justify such glowing anticipations makes one all the more anxious to put on record the history of a successful mine, such as the Silver Islet has, on the whole, been. My connection with its discovery and early development was a very intimate one, and I propose in this paper to sketch its history and character, and sum up the amount of silver it has so far yielded. An additional reason for the appearance of this paper is that the Transactions of the Institute contain only a few references to the Silver Islet Mine. Although this mine is reported successful, we have, of course, no guarantee that it will not fall a victim to the same influences which have

THE characteristics of alloyed anodes and their influence on the products of electrolysis and power consumption have been noted previously in the literature.1 This paper presents data in continuation of the subject given in an earlier paper by the authors.2 As noted in the authors' previous paper, the objectives of this work are the reduction in the cell voltage and the purity of the cathode product resulting from the use of alloyed lead anodes. The fundamental facts developed in the previous paper were: (1) that the presence of a small amount of calcium lowers the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. below that of pure lead; and (2) that thallium when present to the extent of 4 per cent. rendered the anode practically stable, thereby lowering the contamination of the cathode by lead to a very insignificant amount. The specific features determined in this recent work are as follows: 1. The lowest limit of calcium in the lead which will still give maximum lowering of the anode potential. 2. The characteristics of the thallium-calcium-lead anode. 3. The characteristics of the silver-calcium-lead anode. 4. The characteristics of the thallium-silver-calcium-lead anode. It was determined that 0.1 per cent. calcium in the anode was sufficient to lower the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. Table 1 shows the characteristics of alloyed anodes tested. The anode composed of 0.1 per cent. calcium, 4 per cent. thallium, and 95.9 per cent.
