ALTHOUGH the refining period of the heat is generally defined as A starting after the charge has been completely melted, it may more properly be considered as beginning with the first efforts to facilitate the shaping up of the slag and the making of corrective additions for the control of slag or metal composition. Such actions may be initiated during the latter half of the lime boil. The early part of the refining period may, then, in essence overlap the latter part of the melting period. The primary aims of the refining period are to reduce phosphorus and sulphur from the steel bath to levels safely below the maximum contents specified, to eliminate carbon as rapidly as possible and still allow time for proper conditioning of the slag and attainment of the necessary bath temperature, and to deliver the heat ready for tapping or furnace deoxidation, with slag in the proper physical and chemical condition, and with carbon and oxygen contents and the temperature of the steer bath at the proper levels for the composition and grade of steel being produced. The particular conditions that fulfil these aims are distinctly different, depending upon whether the steel is to be finished according to fully-killed, semikilled, or rimming practice and also depending upon the carbon range specified. Regard- less of the type of charging practice employed, the object of the refining period is to produce repeatedly the desired finishing and tapping conditions for the grade of steel being produced. The variations and proportions of raw materials used in the charge may cause some variations in the degree of control required during refining, but not in the method of control. The refining period can therefore be discussed from a viewpoint largely independent of charging and melting practice. SHAPING UP THE SLAG In the first helper's vocabulary, refining practice consists in "shaping up" his heat. This includes elimination of sulphur, phosphorus, and carbon, putting the slag in proper condition, and adjusting bath temperature. Shaping up the slag is a major consideration because

The art of natural-gas compressing is now over 25 years old, and has grown at practically the same rate as the increase in domestic natural-gas consumers. There are now over 200 natural-gas compressing stations in North America, aggregating more than 320,000 hp. of compressor capacity and representing a property value of more than $22,000,000, and compressing more than 85 per cent. of all the gas used. The age and magnitude of the art make it evident that the use of gas compressors is a recognized integral part and universal custom of the natural-gas business. The public also is not without its rights and vital interests in this problem. Approximately 1,700,000 domestic natural-gas consumers in North America are dependent upon gas compressors for their natural-gas service. That is, if the use of compressors were to be prohibited, the majority of these consumers would be unable to secure adequate natural-gas service. Each consumer represents between four and five persons, and it therefore follows that the comfort and well-being—as far as natural-gas service is concerned—of at least 8,000,000 persons would be affected if the use of natural-gas compressors should be prohibited. These 1,700,000 consumers have invested, in services, house piping, fixtures, and appliances, an average of about $90 each, or an aggregate of $153,000,000, which is much more than the companies' investment in gas compressors. Furthermore, in all cases where the rate paid by the consumers is fair to the gas company—considering the value of the service rendered by the gas company—the consumers are entitled to continued service and protection of the investment they have made on the faith that the gas service would be continued in the future. Since "Customs adopted and acquiesced in, if not in conflict with federal or State legislation, have the force of positive law,"l and ('Courts will take notice of whatever ought to be generally known withxn the limits of their jurisdiction,"2 there ought to be no question as to the un-

THIS paper is intended, in the light of recent investigations, to call attention to some of the essential features of good practice in sampling and mine-valuation. Mine-sampling may be divided broadly into two classes : (1) development-sampling and computation of ore-reserves; and, (2) stope-sampling and estimation of stope-values. DEVELOPMENT-SAMPLING. It is with development-sampling only that this paper deals-the term development being taken to mean the opening-up of a mine by cross-cuts, drives, connections, etc., preparatory to actual extraction of the ore for milling. In development-sampling the work of the sampler and the consequent estimation of the probable value of the mine or portions of the mine, as the case may be, cannot be verified until a later period, when the ground thus sampled has been exploited; hence, extreme care and accuracy are essential. Moreover, the development-sampler has to foresee and allow for contingencies which may arise when stoping is started. It follows that the sampling, in development-work, demands familiarity with the conditions likely to be encountered later in actual mining. In stopes, on the other hand, sampling is clone under actual working-conditions, and the sampler's valuations are immediately checked by the gold-output, or in some cases by a second sampling of the broken ore. A stope-sampler therefore need not be an experienced miner, though he should possess sound technical training and work accurately. Should he be somewhat inexperienced, be soon has his errors discovered for him, and learns to avoid them. The investigations described were made on a portion of Clear Creek basin near Golden, Colo. (-4 portion of the area under survey is shown in Fig. 1. The photograph was taken in the vicinity of station No. 2 of Line 11.) Three principal purposes were in the minds of the investigators: 1. To repeat with modern, more sensitive and more reliable instruments magnetometric placer investigations previously made. 2. To disprove the recently advanced theory that deposits of the glacial period have no pronounced magnetic effects. 3. To develop in detail the theory of the magnetic effects produced by placer deposits. Six years ago, the first magnetic observations were published, which proved that it is possible to locate gold-bearing channels with relatively crude instruments.' Two years ago, K. C. Laylander published results obtained with similar instruments.2 The measurements of the latter were discussed by the senior author of this paper.3 At that time, however, the material available for such a discussion was somewhat scarce and not made with the most modern magnetic instruments, although very brilliant results were obtained. Therefore, the senior author felt that magnetic investigations should be made on very clear geologic conditions with the most modern instruments. Comparison of Magnetometers The junior author undertook this work in the spring of 1928. The magnetic field balances, for vertical and horizontal intensities, designed by Schmidt were used (Figs. 2 and 3). The scale value of these instruments was approximately 257 and 157, respectively. INTRODUCTION The composition of water used in the flotation process has always been of primary interest to the flotation metallurgist. It is by alteration of the chemistry of the water introduced to the process that flotation separation is effected. In only a few cases has it been necessary to treat available water prior to use in the process. In the past, flotation tailings were treated for the removal of solids via the tailings dam and water decanted from the dam was either recirculated to the process or discharged to the surface water system. The choice of recirculation or discharge was based upon water availability, effect of recycle water on the process, and economic considerations. The Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 have charged the United States Environmental Protection Agency with establishing effluent limitations from point sources of discharge into the navigable water of the United States. A detailed study, sponsored by EPA, of the water of ore processing plants took place in 1974 and 1975 and guidelines for these plants will presumably have been published by the time this paper has been presented(1). The action of many of the individual states preceded the EPA in this attempt to regulate the quality of the water discharged from industrial point sources. Even with recycle of tailings water, some water is discharged from tailings dams into the substrata and at least one state is currently preparing guidelines for the quality of water discharged into the substrata.

The development of a new method of mineral separation was sponsored by the International Salt Company, which requested Battelle Institute to investigate means for improving the quality and appearance of rock salt from the Company's Detroit mine. Although developed specifically for removing impurities from rock salt, the general method may be applicable to other separation problems. The principal impurities in rock salt from the Detroit mine are dolomite and anhydrite which represent 2 to 5 pct of the weight of the mined salt. In the size range from 1/4 to M in. (the range of primary interest in this project) the impurities are only partially liberated from the halite in normal production. Further size reduction to improve the liberation of impurities is not practicable in view of the market requirements for the coarse grades of rock salt. Laboratory separations in heavy liquids showed that, to improve the quality and appearance of the rock salt substantially, it would be necessary to remove not only free gangue particles but also a large proportion of the locked-in particles. Because rock salt is an inexpensive commodity, a low-cost process was required. Gravity methods were, of course, considered. The heavy-liquid separations indicated that a split at an effective specific gravity of 2.2 to 2.3 would be required. (The specific gravity of pure halite is 2.16.) Heavy-media separation was investigated but had the disadvantages that it was necessary both to operate with saturated brine and to dry the cleaned salt, and that the cleaned salt was darkened by the magnetite medium. Air tabling was tried but did not give the desired separation. It soon became apparent that established methods would not provide a satisfactory solution and work was undertaken on the development of a new process to solve the problem. PROCESS DEVELOPMENT Preliminary Experiments: At the start of the investigation, an analysis of the problem indicated that the diathermacy of rock salt—that is, its ability to transmit radiant heat—might form the basis for an efficient separation process. Under this theory, the impurities might be selectively heated by radiant heat. The particles could then be fed over a belt coated with a heat-sensitive substance so that the warm impure particles would adhere preferentially to the coating. After the initial experiments, made by heating the rock salt with an infrared lamp and separating the product on small sheets of resin-coated rubber, proved encouraging, a small continuous separation unit was set up. This comprised 1) a simple heating unit consisting of a vibrating feeder covered with aluminum foil and an infrared lamp mounted above the feeder and 2) a separation belt 6 in. wide and 36 in. long. A sketch of the device is shown in Fig. 1. Results with this apparatus confirmed the fact that a good separation was possible. It was apparent, however, that a considerable amount of experimental work would be needed to develop the scheme to a practical and economical process. The Process: Basically, the process consists of two main steps: 1) selective heating by radiation and 2) separation of the heated particles on a heat-sensitive surface. Because neither of these steps had previously been utilized commercially in mineral processing, it was necessary to do basic research on both aspects. Factors studied in the investigation included type of heat source, design of heating unit, design of separation belt, selection of heat-sensitive coating, removal of heated particles from the belt, contact between particles and coating, and maintenance of the heat-sensitive surface. Part of the experimental work was carried out on a small-scale unit consisting of the 36x6 in. belt and auxiliary apparatus, and part on a larger unit. For simplicity, discussion of work on both of these units is grouped together. SELECTIVE HEATING Radiant-Heat Source: The essential requirements for a radiant-heat source were 1) that the radiant heat be in a wave length range which is effectively absorbed by the impurities but not absorbed appreciably by the rock salt and 2) that it be dependable, practical, and economical. Selection of a heat source of suitable wave length range was one of the first considerations. It is well known that pure halite is highly transparent to radiant energy in wave lengths from 0.3 to 13 microns. However, the available data on infrared transmission by dolomite and anhydrite, particularly in the range below two microns, were not complete enough to serve as a reliable basis for selection of a heat source. Although it may have been possible to obtain sufficient data on infrared transmission and absorption to enable one to select the best heat source, a more direct procedure was used. This consisted simply of exposing the crude rock salt to each of several types of radiant-heat source on the small continuous separation device. The heat sources investigated, approximate source temperature used, and calculated wave length of maximum radiation are tabulated in Table I. Of the two types of tungsten-filament lamps investigated, both the short wave length photoflood lamps and the longer wave length infrared lamps were satisfactory from the standpoint of selectivity

THE amount of research done in the last few years on the subject of diffusion in solid metals is significant of the importance of this problem. To review the literature dealing with diffusion is unnecessary here. Desch1 in 1912 reviewed the work that had been done on diffusion in solids and gave a bibliography of the literature published before that time. Mehl's paper in 19362 is an excellent review of diffusion in metals and contains a large bibliography. Of importance also for its review and bibliography is an article by A. I. Krynitsky.3 While considerable material has appeared in the literature on diffusion in brass, the amount of information is not great compared to that pertaining to some of the other alloys. Most of the information published is of a qualitative nature; that which is quantitative varies considerably. Thus the quantitative determination of the rates of diffusion of copper and zinc in alpha brass by a new method appeared worth while. In the present investigation the rate of diffusion of zinc in approximately the same composition alpha brass has been determined at three temperatures. PROCEDURE The method used consisted of plating copper on a beta brass, heating it to allow diffusion to take place, and measuring the concentration of copper by determining the lattice constant of the alloy. This method is unique in that it uses a beta brass of such a composition that at the temperature at which diffusion takes place the beta brass is saturated with copper. Risk for most mineral investments is greater than that of average business ventures, because the physical and economic characteristics of the mineral deposit are never known with certainty. Inasmuch as the merits of a potential mineral investment cannot be fully appraised without consideration of the impact to the investor of the possible unfavorable events associated with the adoption of the project, methods of risk analysis are important in project evaluation and investment selection. The conceptual framework for risk analysis and the means by which some of the recommended practices might be implemented are examined. In addition to the normal business risk due to market forces, the physical and economic characteristics of the mineral deposit are never known with certainty, for only partial or indirect information is available, such as data from drill cores or surface and underground workings. Consequently, risk for most mineral investments is greater than that of average business ventures. Inasmuch as the merits of a potential mineral investment cannot be fully appraised without consideration of the impact to the investor of the possible unfavorable events associated with adoption of the project, methods of risk analysis are important in project evaluation and investment selection. This paper examines the conceptual framework for risk analysis and means by which might be implemented some of the recommended procedures. Utility Theory A discourse on risk and its impact upon investment selection quite often leads the reader into the concept of utility theory, for utility theory is a device constructed by economists to measure the satisfaction an individuai receives from a good; in the case of investment analysis, that good is the outcome of an investment. It briefly is reviewed here to describe the reaction of the individual to risk and as a stepping stone to other techniques more suited to risk analysis at the level of the firm. Utility theory proposes that an investor possess a utility map (curve), such as indicated in Fig. 1, which indicates the value in utiles of potential monetary rewards to an individual with some specific endowment of resources. This paper presents a brief discussion of numerous devices and processes which have been utilized for the recovery of values from gases in copper reduction works and describes in greater detail the development and application in recent years of electrical precipitation, more familiarly known as the Cottrell process, to the problems of dust losses with furnace gases in copper-smelting and refining plants. The field for collection of suspended particles in gases is widely extended in our modern complex, congested .and industrialized mode of living, and its satisfactory solution is required by our increasing appreciation of the extravagant waste, unhealthful effects and nuisance which such uncontrolled emission of solid suspensions represents. Much of the special dust-recovery equipment in use today has been developed in one industry and carried over to many others. The early work of Cottrell was with sulfuric acid mists, aimed at the purification problem in contact acid manufacture, but the present uses of Cottrell equipment cover a diversified field—carbon black, combustible gas, oil mists, iron blastfurnace fumes and dusts, cement-kiln gases, as well as the purification of gases in contact and chamber acid plants and its wide and extended use in the nonferrous metallurgical field of copper, zinc and lead, and their associated metals. Dust and fume collection from furnace gases became a problem only with the modern development of large and amply powered auxiliary furnace equipment, which in turn permitted large furnace units, fast driving and large outputs of finished product per unit of furnace capacity. The ancient metallurgist with his small clay pot and hand-operated bellows had too little gas velocity to cause a real dust loss. As furnaces grew in size, flues and stacks were added, and undoubtedly the first observable dust losses were indicated by the deposits in the flue and stack base. Large flues, it was noted, collected more than smaller ones, and the expansion of a portion of the flue into a chamber represented the first serious attempt at recovery of furnace dust losses. For a century or more the settling chamber represented the best of skilled metallurgical practice in recovery of furnace dust, and it may be said to have reached

INTRODUCTION Reasons for Thermal Drying The continuing increase in the percentage of minus %-inch coal produced as a result of the increased use of mechanical mining methods has, over the years, tended to shift considerable portions of the work of producing saleable coal to the fine coal cleaning section of the preparation plant. Because a given weight of fine coal will contain substantially greater surface area than an equivalent weight of coarse coal, it follows that, when subjected to wet cleaning processes, the fines will absorb and retain consider- ably more moisture than coarser fractions. Increased moisture pickup in the finer sizes complicates fine coal cleaning since beneficiation may not be limited to the removal of ash and sulfur but often must be expanded to include the additional step of thermal drying to remove excessive moisture. Thus, water which provides the medium for cleaning fine coal is in itself detrimental and, like ash and sulfur, reduces coal quality. Removal of surface moisture by drying is done for one or more of the following 1 reasons: (1) To avoid freezing difficulties and to facilitate handling during shipment, storage and transfer to the points of use; (2) to maintain high pulverizer capacity; (3) to reduce heat loss due to evaporation of surface moisture from the coal in the burning process, thus increasing heating efficiency; (4) to improve the quality of coal used for special purposes, such as in the production of coke, briquettes, and chemicals; (5) to decrease transportation costs; and (6) to facilitate dry coal-cleaning processes. Because benefits to coal transportation and utilization are the most common reasons for thermal drying, the following sections will examine these areas in greater detail. Benefits to Transportation Initial benefits from drying are the reduction of shipping costs from the mine to the point of utilization since more coal can be concentrated into a given weight of product when worthless moisture is removed. Non- combustible~ such as water and mineral matter in railroad shipments of coal are billed the same as coal at $3.32 per ton, according to the recent average costs. Savings of 10 to 20 dollars from drying on the shipment cost of each 50 to 60 tons of coal contained in a typical railroad car is common. Savings on coal shipments from individual mines which result from coal drying can be expressed in terms of hundreds of thousands of dollars and more each year. For example, a reduction of shipping charges of only 5 percent on one million tons per year would mean a savings of 166,000

In Part I, a study of pressure build-up curves calculated for conditions under which both oil and gas flow led to the conclusion that the presence of a dispersed free gas phase in an oil reservoir must be taken into consideration to estimate accurately average reservoir pressure and permeability from build-up curves. Familiar methods based on the assumption of no free gas can be extended to the two-phase case by using total compressibility and mobility in place of single-fluid compressibility and mobility. These methods give correct values for average pressure and permeability when gas saturation is small. Errors become larger as the gas saturation increases. However, for the use to which the results will be put, the methods are satisfactory for reservoir engineering purposes. An improved method of calculating the performance of depletion-type reservoirs is presented in Part 2. Because the mathematical relationships describing simultaneous flow of oil and gas are quite involved. simplifying assumptions are made to provide means of obtaining approximate solutions of reasonable accuracy. One such approximate method now in use is the constant-GOR solution. It involves the assumption that at any instant, the ratio of total gas flow rate (both free and disolved) to oil flow rate is the same at all points in the reservoir. The approach is not applicable unless the free gar saturation in the reservoir is everywhere greater than the critical gas saturation. This paper presents a modification which, by avoiding the constant-GOR assumption, makes the method applicable to all reservoir conditions, and so far appears to be more accurate than the constant-GOR solution and to he comparable in required compuctation time. PART I— BUILD-UP CURVE ANALYSIS INTRODUCTION Pressure build-up characteristics of shut-in wells have been used for many years by engineers to evaluate average reservoir pressure, effective permeability thickness of the pay section, effectiveness of well completion (skin effect) and reservoir size. A number of methods of analysis have appeared from time to time."" Without exception, these methods are based on the assumption that the reservoir contains but one fluid of constant small compressibility and constant mobility. It has been suggesteda" hat these single-fluid methods may be applied to data from reservoirs containing both oil and gas by substitution of some effective total properties of the multiphase system in place of the corresponding single-phase properties. The present investigation was undertaken primarily to evaluate this approach. METHOD A number of theoretical build-up curves were calculated for conditions of two-phase flow, under the assumption of certain reservoir and fluid properties, and were analyzed by single-fluid methods with appropriate total compressibility and total mobility values for the corresponding single-fluid properties. Results of the analyses were compared with the assumed conditions. The theoretical build-up curves were completed by procedures similar to those of West, Garvin and Sheldon." Since these calculations require a considerable amount of computer time, an attempt was made to derive an approximate calculation method. The attempt was unsuccessful for calculating build-up curves, but the effort did result in a new approximate method of calculating the performance of solution gas drive reservoirs, which appears to be an improvement over the constant-GOR method" used previously (see Part 2). The West, Garvin and Sheldon calculations involved the following assumptions: (1) the reservoir is circular and completely bounded, with a completely penetrating well at its center; (2) the porous medium is uniform and iso-tropic, with a constant water saturation at all points; (3) gravity effects can be neglected; (4) compressibility of rock and water can be neglected; (5) the composition and equilibrium are constant for oil and gas; (6) the same pressure exists in both the oil phase and the gas phase; and (7) no afterproduction occurs, i.e., the well is shut in at the sand face for build-up. These assumptions make it possible to describe two-phase flow of oil and gas by the partial differential equations:
