Introduction The term kaolin is derived from kauling, a Chinese word meaning high ridge. This was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago (Murray, 1976). Other common names used for kaolin include clay and China Clay. Clay technically has a broader meaning and could refer to bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin's origin. But it could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms kaolin and clay will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin's wide-spread industrial usages center on kaolinite's physical features of good color, low viscosity, and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with an approximate composition of 2H2O • A12O3 . 2SiO2. A new version of the product is calcined clay with modified hydration content. It is gaining widespread use. Components of any particular kaolin, in addition to alumina and silica, are viewed as impurities. The more values deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of the highest purity. Kaolin is the most widely used mineral in paper manufacturing throughout the world. Key production centers are located in England and the US. Most of the Tatter's production is located in Georgia. The key markets for Georgia kaolin are paper markets - both paper coating and paper filling. These paper markets extend throughout the world, not just to domestic markets. In fact, export markets are second in size only to domestic paper markets for Georgia's producers of kaolin. Just as the paper markets are important for kaolin producers, kaolin is an important raw material for papermakers. Compared to the other three major pigments - titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and talc - kaolin's 1984 tonnage for papermaking represented 85% of the total. Even though titanium dioxide's unit value is much higher, kaolin's estimated total 1984 value still represented 51% of total dollars spent by papermakers for the four pigments. Kaolin grades- are briefly defined using particle size and brightness as principal means of classification. Likewise, grades of papers using kaolin are defined using the American Paper Institute's guidelines. From these definitions, associated kaolin grades used in particular grades of paper are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on how qualities desired in certain papers are achieved through the use of specialized kaolin grades. Design of a new underground laboratory is underway through the auspices of the United States National Science Foundation. The Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is scoped to provide a diverse group of researchers with a dedicated underground facility capable of supporting a broad spectrum of fundamental and applied research at depth in the Earth?s crust. Key research partners in the endeavor are physicists, biologists, geoscientists and engineers. Engineers are not only designing the underground facilities, but are also actively involved in developing research initiatives. This paper will introduce the DUSEL engineering research program to the mining community, provide an overview of the site, geology, and laboratory facilities, and describe some key program initiatives. The particular technical challenges and opportunities afforded by the construction of DUSEL and the performance of the integrated science-engineering program will be discussed by reference to a subset of research initiatives that are currently under development: Cavern Design, CO2 Sequestration and Transparent Earth. These research initiatives target the development of new techniques that can support improved subsurface investigation, design and construction procedures. An increased use of the subsurface can actively contribute to the development of new, more sustainable solutions for use in mining and civil engineering practice.

On Nov 1, 2007 House Resolution 2262 ? The Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2007 ? was passed by the U.S. House by a vote of 244-166. HR-2262, among other things, would impose a 4-per-cent royalty on existing mines with commercial production and an 8-percent gross royalty on all new claims. Not surprisingly, this possible new law was one of the hottest topics of discussion at the Northwest Mining Association?s conference that this year returned to Spokane, WA for its 113th annual meeting on Dec. 3-7. More than 1,800 delegates attended the conference that was held under the banner theme of ?Mining ?. For today and tomorrow.? Northwest Mining Association executive director Laura Skaer was one of many speakers during the three-day conference to respond to the threat to the industry posed by HR-2262 with a presentation titled ?Potential changes to the 1872 Mining Law.? In the presentation that she first unveiled at the Alaska Miners Association?s convention and trade show on Nov. 8, Skaer laid out a comprehensive list of problems with HR-2262. In addition to the association?s obvious concerns about the proposed royalty, Skaer noted that the bill includes a mine veto provision that would allow the Secretary of the Interior the authority to deny an operations permit to a project if the secretary determines that the operation would cause undue degradation to public lands and resources. Potential massive withdrawals from mineral entry are also included in HR-2262. Among the lands that could be off limits to miners under HR-2262 are wilderness study areas, areas of environmental concern and 23.6 hm2 (58.5 million acres) identified as Roadless Rule. States, political subdivisions and Indian Tribes would also have more authority to withdraw lands, she said. To combat the proposed changes, Skaer made 10 trips to Washington D.C. on behalf of NWMA members in 2007. In her presentation at the annual meeting, she also objected to provisions that include no life-of-mine permits and uncertain permit renewals and new and duplicative environmental standards that she said are vague, ambiguous and inconsistent with current federal and state environmental laws. Rip van Winkle is back ? and he?s meaner than ever.?

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) operates one iron ore mine, three concentration plants and three pelletising plants in Kiruna, Sweden. The current methods of separation at the beneficiation plants are low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse apatite flotation, where the wet LIMS stage is regarded as the crucial part of silica separation from the ore. Because future silica levels are expected to increase in the incoming material to the beneficiation plants, geometallurgy has become an important area of development and research.A laboratory-scale methodology was developed for the systematic characterisation of the ore for mineral processing, with the focus on the high silica ore type B2 and newly discovered subtypes. This methodology combines mineralogical, geochemical and process mineralogical characteristics. Automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN®) is used to study the modal mineralogy, the distribution of silicate minerals in different particle size classes after comminution, the deportment of silicon (Si) between various silicates and the degree of liberation and intergrowth of magnetite and silicates. An essential stage in the systematic characterisation of the ore deposit for mineral processing is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the full scale at the concentration plants. This is achieved by using empirical models based on the data collected at the mineral processing plants. As the first step to implement the geometallurgical information, the current geological model is reconstructed with the mineralogy and the two, newly defined subtypes of high silica ore type B2 are separated into different domains.To study the reduction of the SiO2 content in the magnetite concentrate, a large-scale reverse cationic silicate flotation laboratory test program was initiated in early spring 2016. This program investigated potential silicate flotation in the beneficiation plants at the Kiirunavaara site. The second target is to implant mineral processing parameters into the block model based on the new geological model. This information provides a good basis for making a prognosis for mine planning and a quality prognosis regarding the crude ore for mineral processing.CITATION:Niiranen, K, 2017. Nowadays, there are some new requirements for the supermarket floors. The floors are loaded by high point- and moving-loads. In spite of this fact, it is necessary to ensure the stiffness of the floor and the stiffness of its support. When pile foundations are designed in the case of weak soil, the piles are recommended under the foundations of the supermarket and also under the floor layers. The example of foundation of a typical supermarket located on long­standing municipal dumping ground is presented. Indirect foundation - CFA piles, 0.5 m in diameter and 4.5 to 20.0 m long, was de­signed. Fifteen trial loading tests were carried out.

A Seismic Hazard Scale (SHS) has been developed to provide a practical seismic hazard assessment tool applicable to mine site personnel. It has been applied to seismic data sets from numerous Western Australian mines. The SHS is applicable when quantifying seismic hazard on a mine wide scale, on a mining block scale, and on a local cluster-by-cluster scale. Spatial mapping of variations in seismic hazard is a particularly powerful application of the scale. The SHS is sensitive to temporal increases in seismic hazard. It has also been shown that the SHS can be applied to estimate seismic hazard when seismic monitoring data are not available. The SHS is a simple derivation of the Gutenberg-Richter relation. There are assumptions and limitations to the SHS that need to be considered when applying it to mine seismicity data.

This paper recognises the 25th year of the Morgantown International Ground Control in Mining Conference, by offering a twenty five year review of ground control in the Australian mining industry ? primarily in underground coal. The paper provides an overview of the developments in ground control design methodologies, practices and products. It not only summarises what has been done, but attempts to highlight at least some of the major issues, significant developments, controversies and areas of contention, plus some of the continuing gaps in our understanding or capabilities as we go forward into the next 25 years. Some of the issues included are in relation to: the development of the high strength bolt and cable reinforcement practices widely adopted today and the contrast between stiff and soft systems; a focus on local detail, at the expense of understanding regional stability concerns; dramatic improvements in the use of, and systems available for underground geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring; some of the ground control management trends, including occupational health and safety concerns, availability of suitably trained staff and legislative requirements; the opposing approaches of the empiricists versus the numerical modellers ? is there some middle ground?

This publication summarizes the in-house and contract research and development projects programed for fiscal pear 1980 by the Bureau of Mines under its Minerals Environmental Research activity. The document provides a mechanism for interested parties, including potential contractors, to gain insight into ongoing and projected work of the Bureau's environmental research efforts. Research to identify and correct environmental problems associated with mining and metallurgical operations has long been an integral part of the Bureau's mission. Through the years, efforts of various Bureau programs have yielded valuable information on the origin and control of many of these problems. With the reorganization of the Bureau of Mines in 1979, the Minerals Environmental Technology program was structured to consolidate these efforts into a single program that will systematically investigate al aspects of mining- and processing-related environmental pollution and damage-from initial discovery of the mineral resource to ultimate return of the land to productive use. In fiscal year 1980, the Bureau received an appropriation of about $21 million to conduct research and development work on these problems.

The mining industry has long been searching for an effective structural application that prevents weathering and falls of loose rock, debris, and sediment. J-Crete is a fiber-reinforced, engineered, cementitious composite rock application that is designed, tested, and successfully utilized as such a material. Laboratory evaluation of J-Crete material properties has shown the final compressive strength to be in excess of 7,300 psi (50.34 MPa), with 24 hour strength in excess of 1,500 psi (10.34 MPa). The flexural tensile strength is in excess of 600 psi (4.1 MPa) and is provided through a unique combination of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers activated by a proprietary liquid additive that prevents them from clumping and enables even distribution throughout the grout. Tensile bond strength in excess of 350 psi (2.4 MPa) at 28 day cure tightens the strata and holds loose material in place. Practically impervious to gas and liquids, J-Crete protects strata against long-term weathering, does not require screening to be effective, and has proven to be a successful waterproofing material. J-Crete has demonstrated the potential to alleviate coal mine roof cutters in soft, wet clay formations. J-Crete reinforces coal mine ribs by bonding directly to the rib, conforms to the strata, strengthens the rib, and eliminates sloughing due to long-term weathering; stabilizes coal mine entries by bonding directly to the brow and roof, and creates a monolithic shell with double reinforced corners.

International Training Resources is a company consisting of personnel with extensive law enforcement and military special operations experience, The staff members are qualified to train and certify, assist and advise law enforcement officers and agencies, at any level, in critical incident policy, procedures and tactical resolutions. Successful critical incident resolution is comprised of many elements of professional skills and personnel. (Command staff, negotiators, snipers, tactical teams, uniform patrol, K-9, bomb squad, etc.) Recently, tactical teams have been developing the capability for the use of explosive methods for rapid entry into crisis locations. This document ‘will briefly describe the environment, operational issues and courses of action associated with developing a complete tactical breaching program for utilization by SWAT teams in response to operational conditions in critical incident situations. This topic is being presented to the I.S.E.E. evaluators under “Interesting Blasting Projects” and “Public Relations” categories. Tactical operations differ significantly from traditional industry practices and we appreciate the opportunity to show the industry other professional applications of explosive materials and techniques. Presently, of the few schools from which law enforcement officers can receive training with explosive breaching methods, International Training Resources is the only company currently teaching and certifying officers which has received total endorsement by the California Peace Officer’s Standards and Training Commission (P.O.S.T.) and the state blaster’s licensing commission. We have pioneered the combining of law enforcement needs and blasting industry technology to train tactical officers, nationwide, in the mission essential skills necessary for explosive breaching.

Over the last years, the importance of the assessment of environmental and social aspects as well as of issues of good governance has increased significantly in mining finance. For this, international standards as well as internal guidelines of the banks and other involved institutions have been established and continuously improved. Considering these standards and regulations, the banks can influence the sustainability of mining projects - and they have done so in the past -, mainly by implementing certain provisions and covenants in the loan documentation, binding the financing to the mining company’s adherence to the agreed sustainability standards. However, there are limits to the banks’ influence due to the competitive environment with other available means of financing. Nevertheless, the experience of the last years has shown that the standards and regulations bound to the financing by the banks help to lead the mining industry towards more sustainable projects.

There are many different machine setup parameters and variables that affect the production of cone crushers in a mineral processing plant. One of these variables is the eccentric speed at which the cone gyrates. In June 2012, pilot tests were conducted on a 200 hp high speed cone crusher to determine the production and operating conditions over a wide spectrum of eccentric speed. Every plant will have variations in the ore characteristics and feed rates throughout the life of the mine, and at times throughout a single shift of operation, which result in non-optimal use of the crushing energy and inconsistent process control. For high speed cone crushers, the crusher will exhibit a different capacity, power required, and discharge size distribution as the speed ranges over the design limits of the machine. This study documents the measured variation in production and energy efficiency both when the crusher was ran at full capacity as well as when the feed to the crusher was not sufficient to run at full capacity. Overall, the results match theory and the capacity and power fluctuated by 25% and 17%, respectively, over the speed range when operated full while there was an overall trend of slightly coarser discharge size distribution as the speed decreased. The results with the fixed feed rate were more telling, as the crushers had 4-14% higher production when making a theoretical minus 12.5 mm product when operating at the optimal speed as compared to the worst speed in the ?typical? speed range for this application. Secondary analysis of the fixed tonnage testing also showed that the power draw was more consistent with lower magnitude spikes at the higher speeds (higher cavity level), as on average the standard deviation of the power draw increased from 7% to 18% and the peak power spikes from 20% to 48% over the speed range tested. The findings lay groundwork for more efficient plant design. Varying the speed of the crusher can be used to tune the crusher speed during commissioning, adapt to changing ore conditions over long periods of time, or be used as a dynamic input into an advanced control system. Each action above would serve to make the crusher(s) more productive and more energy efficient, and would also have mechanical benefits for the machine. Minerales Monclova S.A. de C.V. (MIMOSA) has applied different methane gas drainage technologies, according to the top industry requirements in order to keep the methane gas at the lowest possible concentration in our operations, both in the development sections and longwall sections. Our staff has used the horizontal rotary technique. In 2004 MIMOSA bought a re-built drill machine and signed a contract with Resource Enterprises Inc. (REI), which included a training program in Horizontal Directional Drilling using the reflex system. The training system was developed for a period of three months in Mine VII, with very good performance by the MIMOSA staff. After the training the equipment was moved to Esmeralda Mine, where we had already drilled holes at the development section, 2,500 ft. It was the longest distance that could be reached with our original equipment, obviously; the directional drilling program is another challenge for us and our staff, but we are very confident that our result will be better every time. We will be evaluating each borehole and expect to improve our results in each progressive borehole, until we can drill up to the capacity of the equipment. We are in the process of buying another drill with an electronic monitoring device (DD DMecca) in the following months.

In tectonically disturbed zones within coal seams, decreases in the amount of kaolinite in the cellular structure of inertiniterich coal are accompanied by increasing kaolinite contents in fractures within the coal and/or rocks of immediately overlying horizons. This is due to fracturing of the inertinite microstructure by tectonic disturbance and remobilization and redistribution of free, fine-grained material (kaolinite and/or inertodetrinite.) Ascending waters are believed to transport the kaolinite in suspension, and redeposit it in the fractures and pores in the overlying horizons. This removal of material from the inertinite-rich coal leads to an increase in porosity (higher free gas storage), a presumed reduction in coal strength and an apparent increased proneness to instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas.

Overbreak occurred inevitably in a tunnel excavation, is the main factor for increasing cost and period in tunnel projects. Furthermore the damage to the remaining rock mass related to the overbreak can give rise to a serious safety problem in tunnels. As a rule of thumb, causes for the overbreak are inaccuracy in drilling, the wrong design of blasting and selection of explosives, and heterogeneity in rock mass. Specially, the geological features of the rock mass around the periphery of an excavation are very important factors, so a lot of research has been conducted to describe this phenomena. But the geological rockmass classification for the overbreak and the method for decreasing the overbreak have not been fully established. Besides, the technical improvement of the charge method is needed as explosives for the smooth blasting have not functioned efficiently. In this study, the working face around periphery of an excavation has been continuously sectionalized to 5~ 6 parts, and the new Blastability Index for the overbreak based on 6 factors of RMD(Rock Mass Description), UCS(Uniaxial Compressive Strength) JPS(Joint Plane Spacing), JPO(Joint Plane Orientation), JPA(Joint Plane Aperture) and FM(Filling Material) is proposed to classify sections of the working face. On the basis of this classification, the distance between contour holes and the charging density are determined to minimize the overbreak. For controlling the charging density and improving the function of explosives, the New Deck Charge(N.D.C) method utilizing the deck charge effect and detonation transmission in hole has been developed.

"SummaryBritish Petroleum plc is developing a new gold recovery process known as coal gold agglomeration (CGA) for the recovery of gold from its ores. Liberated gold grains are recovered with high efficiency by adhering to agglomerates of coal and oil. The process is simple, can recover gold grains down to very fine sizes, avoids the large scale use of cyanide and provides the industry with an important new process option.A technical appraisal of the process has been performed on an extensive range of gold bearing materials. Ore types have been identified from which high gold recoveries can be achieved. A spreadsheet based computer program has been used to estimate the preliminary capital and operating costs of the process. Comparison with established gold production costs shows that the process costs of CGA, on the appropriate ore types, are potentially very attractive, which will enable economic treatment of lower grade ores than is currently possible using conventional cyanidation. Treatment of known placer deposits or gravity concentration plant tailings may be the most rapid means of demonstrating the process at a commercial scale prior to more widespread applications.1. INTRODUCTIONWestern world gold production for the 1980s has shown rapid growth sustained by a demand for gold at a favourable price (Fig. 1). Heap leaching and CIP/CIL operations have been responsible for the major part of new production during the 1970s and 1980s with present overall production costs averaging US$200/oz in Canada, USA and Australia and US$265/oz in South Africa [l]. A great deal of research and process development effort in the 1980s has been towards the treatment of refractory ores. Operating costs for the economic processing of these ore types by currently available routes are around US$300/oz [2]."

Standing crib supports have been applied in underground mining programs to resist large roof movements and sustain high-loads. The strength and deformation capability of these systems has been documented under both laboratory and field conditions. The parameter that has not been examined and is not well understood is the effect that a crib or other types of standing support has on the primary and secondary bolting systems. A crib support system with low system stiffness may allow large amounts of closure and deformation and cause the bolting systems to yield or even fail. Conversely, cribs or standing support that are too stiff may experience brittle or buckling failures, negating the advantage of the intrinsic supports previously installed. Utilizing a combination of field measurements and 3-dimensional finite element modeling techniques, the relationship between system stiffness and the subsequent performance of the installed bolting system is evaluated. Additionally, a simple method for calculating the combined system stiffness for standing supports, when using materials with different strengths such as steel, concrete, wood, etc., is presented.
