The U.S. Geological Survey recently completed a digital coal resource assessment model of the Upper Pennsylvanian Pittsburgh coal bed which indicates that of the original 34 billion short tons [31 billion tonnes] of coal, 16 billion short tons [14 billion tonnes] remain after subtracting mined-out coal. When technical, environmental, and social restrictions are applied to the remaining Pittsburgh coal model, only12 billion short tons [11 billion tonnes] are available for mining. Our assessment models estimate that up to 0.61 billion short tons [0.55 billion tonnes], 2.7billion short tons [2.4 billion tonnes], and 8.5 billion short tons [7.7 billion tonnes] could be available for surface mining, continuous mining, and longwall mining, respectively. This analysis is an example of a second-generation regional coal availability study designed to model recoverability characteristics for all the major coal beds in the U.S.

The runout of dry blocky rock avalanches produced by planar rockslides affecting a limestone formation with clayey interbeds is analysed by means of distinct element modelling. Numerical analyses are validated by means of the back analysis of a historical rockslide occurred in the investigated area and physical aspects of the phenomenon evidenced by modelling are discussed. Les analyses numeriques sont validées à l’aide de la back-analysis d’un glissement historique survenue dans le site en examen. Die Steinlawinen werden erzeugt von Rutschungen in einer Kalkstein-Formation mit tonhaltige Schichten betreffen. Die numerischen Berechnungen wurden anhand einer Simulation einer historischen Bergsturzen verifiziert, der sich auf den untersuchten Gebiet ereignete. Auf der Basis der erhaltenen Ergebnisse wurden die physikalischen Aspekte der untersuchten Steinlawinen analysiert.

"The authors challenge the traditional thinking that whole ore cyanidation followed by Carbon in Pulp (CIP) or Carbon in Leach (CIL) should be applied as a standard process in the majority of gold processing flowsheets. The concept of whole ore leaching by using cyanide can result in unnecessary environmental and capital risk. Alternative, currently available technologies can be used to provide the desired level of gold recovery at a much lower installed cost and less impact on the environment. Gravity concentration, alone or in conjunction with flotation, can produce a gold bearing concentrate that can then be fed directly to a batch or continuous intensive cyanidation unit.The InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) is an intensive cyanidation unit developed by Gekko Systems of Australia. Advantages of this technology include significantly reduced capital outlays for greenfield plants or plant upgrades and increased investor returns. Reduction of onsite cyanide and carbon inventories improves plant safety, materials handling and site security. By using direct electrowinning to treat the gold bearing solutions produced by the ILR, the need for a conventional carbon stripping circuit is removed. Potential also exists to increase grind size – saving energy, further reducing capital and operating costs and decreasing the environmental impact of a mill. Detoxification of cyanide before the release of solution to the tailings dam can minimise tailings disposal and containment requirements.When used in the right application the proposed process will have little or no impact on gold recovery and may actually increase recovery for complex ores. Areas applicable to this type of treatment include: plants in environmentally sensitive regions, lower tonnage higher grade deposits, coarse gold deposits, and preg robbing ores - some of which may not currently be economically feasible using standard processes and flowsheets. We have provided three examples of such projects, where an alternative to whole ore leach and CIP or CIL has delivered these benefits."

This report describes exploration, development, and exploitation methods, and summarizes costs at the Stormy Day mine, which was discovered in 1941. Several shipments of tungsten ore were made in 1944 to the Metals Reserve Company, Salt Lake City, Utah. The purchase of tungsten by the Federal Government, which began in 1951, stimulated interest in tungsten, and a successful program of exploration with participation of the Defense Minerals Exploration Administration (DMEA) indicated enough ore to warrant development of the property. Development work comprised drifting, crosscutting, and raising. Shrinkage stoping was used for mining the ore. Operations were suspended in October 1956, when the Federal Government terminated its purchase program. Total production of the mine was approximately 20,000 tons of tungsten ore. INTRODUCTION This information circular is one of a series, prepared in cooperation with various mining companies and published by the Bureau of Mines, relating to methods and costs of equipping and developing mining properties in the United States.

"Laterite ore processed by the Ambatovy Joint Venture in Madagascar is primarily limonitic in nature, containing about 40 to 45 wt.% Fe and 1.1 wt.% Ni. The process selected for treatment of this ore considered the behavior and deportment of iron in each step of the commercial flowsheet. Such considerations included nickel and cobalt recoveries, reagent consumptions, liquid-solid separation characteristics, and both intermediate and final product purities. In this paper, the results for the first three years of commercial operation at Ambatovy are compared with the design parameters, with emphasis on the behavior of iron.INTRODUCTION The main component of nickeliferous laterite ore is iron, and the Ambatovy deposit in Madagascar is no exception. The Ambatovy ore is primarily limonitic in nature, containing about 40 to 45 wt.% Fe and 1.1 wt.% Ni. Since the nickel content of the ore is roughly one fortieth that of iron, successful recovery of nickel depends on close control of the behavior of iron in the selected process. Exploration of the Ambatovy area, which is located to the east of Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, dates back to 1960, when the Malagasy Service Géologique carried out a limited pitting and auger-drilling program. Phelps Dodge Corporation (now Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc.) was granted the mining rights to the property in 1995 and carried out significant resource definition, environmental assessment and engineering studies between 1995 and 2001 (Chou, Rooke, Williams, & Hanks, 2000). In 2003, Dynatec Corporation, which was formed in 1997 by the merger of Dynatec International Ltd. and Sherritt International Consultants Inc., signed a joint venture agreement with subsidiaries of Phelps Dodge to evaluate the Ambatovy Nickel Project. Dynatec then became extensively involved in the development of the project, including process selection and pilot plant testing in Fort Saskatchewan (Collins et al., 2004, 2005, 2009; Collins & Vardill, 2005). Dynatec acquired 100% of the project in 2005 and a joint venture between Dynatec, Sumitomo Corporation, Korea Resources Corporation (KORES), and SNC-Lavalin Inc. (SLI) was formed shortly thereafter to provide funding for further development. SLI was responsible for engineering, procurement and construction management of the commercial facilities. Sherritt International Corporation reacquired Dynatec Corporation, including 40% ownership in the Ambatovy Nickel Project, in 2007. The current Ambatovy Joint Venture consists of an integrated nickel and cobalt mining, processing, refining and marketing enterprise between subsidiaries of Sherritt (40% owner and mine and plant operator), Sumitomo Corporation (32.5% owner) and KORES (27.5% owner)."

In a typical mining operation, run-of-mine (ROM) ore is crushed and screened to achieve a desired particle size distribution and then fed to processing equipment for further refining. For an operation to be profit-able, the ore handling system from the mine face to final product loadout must be reliable. However, the handling system components do not always perform as expected and production problems related to material flow occur. These problems include flow stoppages, limited live storage capacities, uncontrollable flow, segregation, spillage and dust emissions. These result in lost production, excessive maintenance, safety and environmental issues, and even structural failures, in some cases. Flow patterns Flow problems and their solutions can be best understood by first learning how bulk solids flow. As bulk solids discharge by gravity from a storage system, primarily two types of flow patterns can develop: funnel flow and mass flow. Figure 1 shows a schematic of these two flow patterns. In funnel flow, only a portion of the material is in motion during discharge, which flows toward the outlet through a channel that forms within the stagnant material. Funnel flow occurs when a hopper is not sufficiently steep and smooth to ensure flow along the walls or when the outlet is not fully effective. In mass flow, all of the material is in motion whenever any is discharged ? there is no stagnant material. Mass flow occurs when the hopper is sufficiently steep and smooth to ensure flow along the hopper walls. Shallow valleys are not permitted and the outlet must be fully effective. A third type of flow pattern, called expanded flow, can develop when a mass flow hopper (or hoppers) is placed beneath a funnel flow hopper or bin. The mass flow hopper is designed to activate a sufficiently large flow channel in the funnel flow hopper to avoid flow problems due to a rathole. The flow pattern in which a bulk solid discharges from a storage system strongly influences the flow problems that may occur in that facility.

The mineralogy, textures, and genetic significance of a silver-rich siderite vein and an apparently co-genetic galena vein from the South mine, Broken Hill are discussed.Both veins cut sharply across the Main Lode Horizon and appear to be coeval with thc A.B.H. Consols lode.The minerals of thc siderite vein apparently result from the preferential leaching of silver from Main Lode Horizon ore with a demonstrable "breakdown series" commencing with tetrahedrite, passing through silver sulpho-salts, and ending with simple binary compounds or with elemental silver.The siderite vein has been deposited by metahydrothermal fluids along the lines of Schneiderhohn's "secondary hydrothermal" mineralization.

FOR nearly 100 years wire rope has been fabricated in much the same way. To the great majority of mine superintendents wire rope is just wire rope, little or no semblance of individuality or identifying characteristics. Such an impression was fairly justified until three or four years ago when a practical means was found of performing or preshaping the wires and strands. This discovery permitted a revolutionary change in wire rope manufacture. Instead of merely twisting a number of wires into a strand, then twisting several strands into a complete rope (which twisting would naturally result in great internal strain, thus reducing the resiliency and over-all efficiency of the completed rope), the preformed wires and strands were laid in place without force or twisting. The obvious result was a rope more nearly approximating mechanical perfection. The applied loads are more evenly distributed throughout the component wires and strands, thus reducing unbalanced wire stresses. This results in a higher safety factor. The fact that preformed rope will not unravel when untied at the ends proves the absence of a torsional stress that exists in ordinary rope. A greater useful allowable stress in the wires is therefore possible in actual operating service.

"INTRODUCTION The Bankhead mine of the Cane Creek Coal Mining Co. is in the central part of Walker County, Ala., 4 miles south of Jasper. The Mary Lee bed in this part of the State yields a practically free-burning coal which is marketed as a. steam-raising and domestic fuel. As mined, the coal ordinarily contains ash-forming impurities to an extent that makes it necessary to treat the coal by some washing process before it is marketed. At present the Bank-head coal coarser than 3-1/2 inch is hand-picked and the coal finer than 3-1/2 inch is washed in two single-compartment jigsThis paper contains the result of screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests on a representative sample of the run-of-mine coal and the results of tests made to show the amount of coal liberated from impurities by crushing the coarser sizes. .This report is one of a series on the washability of Alabama coals which is being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the coal producers of Alabama.SAMPLING AT THE MINE'The Mary Lee bed at Bankhead consists of two benches separated by a rock parting which varies in thickness from place to place in the mine. The top bench has a very uniform thick-nest; throughout the workings and yields about 65.0 per cent of the output. The bottom bench varies greatly in thickness and in nary places becomes too thin to work at a. profit. The sample for the washability study was taken underground at a place which was typical of the mine as a whole. In taking the sample the working face was squared up and a representative section out from each bench. Care was taken to secure a, quantity of coal from each bench proportional to the quantity contributed to the mine output. The rock parting as gobbed in accordance with the usual mining practice. The total sample taken weighed 3 tons."

Two drilling techniques are employed - guided longhole drilling and reverse circulation coring - for underground longhole exploration of the coal reserves and the fault structures that affect them. These are complementary to, or replacements for, surface boreholes, underground development drivages and seismic techniques. The developments of the drilling techniques and some case histories are presented in detail.

Analysis of seed numbers present in topsoils (a grazed area, an ungrazed area, and two stockpiles) indicated that seeds of the most prevalent colonizers (e.g., Kochia scoparla, Setaria virdis, and Salsolo collins) were not present in the topsoil upon respreading but rather appeared by immigration from the surrounding areas. The grazed site had a seed density of over 7,700 seeds m-2 (of which 43% were from weedy species) and the ungrazed site had 3,900 seeds m-2 (of which 7% were weeds); the stockpiled topsoils had very low seed densities (255 and 520 seeds m-2). Seed densities and diversity decreased with depth on both the grazed and ungrazed sites; this was especially true on the grazed site where 94% of the seeds were found in the surface 7.5 cm. Several species were present in the seed bank (e.g., Hedeoma hispida, Artemesia ludoviciana, A. frigida, and A, abslnthlum) which were also found on the three and four year old mined sites in the aboveground vegetation survey. Seeds from these species may germinate after several years of dormancy, thereby starting populations on mined sites and enhancing plant diversity. Seed bank analysis was also undertaken on mined sites ranging in age of 2 to 6 years (plus an unmined site). Mined site seed densities ranged from 1630 to 3980 seeds m-2, with the four year old site having the greatest density (largely because of high Melilotus spp. populations); unmined site and stockpiled topsoil sample had lower seed densities. A significant positive correlation between total viable seed content and soil-water saturation percentage indicated that soil texture may influence seed viability/ dormancy (the. finer the material, the higher the seed population). As with the previous part of this study (and other studies), there was a poor correlation between the aboveground flora and the belowground seed composition.

A complete chemical analysis of the waste showed that it contains 15.64% P2O5; X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that it is composed mainly of francolite, calcite, pyrite, quartz and dolomite. The phosphate values were recovered and the settling rate of the wastes enhanced by the use of hydrocyclone and flocculation techniques. The hydrocyclone produced an underflow enriched in phosphate and an overflow enriched in clays. The former represented 39.8% by weight of the phosphatic clay waste and assayed 26% P2O5 at a recovery of 66.36%. The results of flocculation of the phosphatic clay waste showed that both the degree and rate of settling were increased and that the process water could be recycled. The settling rate was 37 times greater when anionic polyacrylamide A130 was used

The Alpala copper-gold deposit is a recent, high-grade porphyry Cu-Au discovery located in the Imbabura Province of north-western Ecuador. The deposit lies along the crustal-scale Chimbo-Toachi Fault Zone within the Dagua-Piñon terrane, which is an oceanic plateau accreted to the South American convergent margin in the Late Cretaceous. The deposit is hosted by quartz diorite stocks that intrude andesitic volcanic breccias of the Oligocene to mid-Miocene San Juan de Lachas Formation. Miocene-age calc-alkaline plutonism is associated with porphyry Cu, Cu-Mo and Cu-Au deposits in southern and northern Ecuador. The Alpala deposit lies along a sector of the Miocene arc that has recently been underplated by the Carnegie Ridge seamount chain that induced shoaling of the subducted Nazca plate beneath northern Ecuador.Surface expressions of the deposit were recognised in May 2012 during follow-up of stream sediment anomalies, when outcropping sheeted and stockwork porphyry-related veins were discovered in Quebrada Alpala. The roots of a NW-trending, structurally-controlled lithocap were recognised over an area of 4.5 × 0.9 km. The remnant lithocap exhibits well-defined mineral zonation mapped by TerraSpecTM analyses on grid soil samples. Soil sampling, heliborne magnetic surveying and channel sampling defined initial drill targets.Seven diamond drill holes were completed in the year from September 2013. Drill hole CSD-13-005 intersected 672 m grading 0.93 per cent Cu and 0.91 g/t Au in high-temperature, inner propylitic and locally potassic-altered quartz diorite intrusions. Overlying hydrothermal clay alteration assemblages define the base of the lithocap. A NW–SE trending footwall structure defines the south-west margin of the deposit. Drill hole 5 intersected high-grade sheeted ‘B-type’ and ‘C-type’ veins (Gustafson and Hunt, 1975) that lie along the south-west margin of an 1100 × 500 m magnetic anomaly that is the focus of ongoing exploration.CITATION:Rohrlach, B, Poma, O, Rosero, B, Silva, J and Ward, J, 2015. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a monitoring field study to optimize the rib control plan in a room-and-pillar coal mine. The study mine is located in the Central Appalachia coal basin. Two monitoring sites were selected at different sections in the study mine. The selected sites have different overburden depths and geologies. The instrumentation plans at study sites include borehole pressure cells installed at various depths in studied pillars, rib and roof extensometers and load cells mounted on number of the rib bolts. The instrumentation results and observed geology for one of the study sites showed great potential for optimizing the rib bolt plan at that section of the mine. Therefore, a rib support optimization study was followed using numerical modeling technique. A calibrated threedimensional model was developed using the instrumentation results of the optimization section. The calibrated model was used to determine the optimum rib support for expected overburden depths and rib heights. Baseline rib bolt patterns were assumed for the optimization study. Additional rib bolts, above and beyond the baseline bolting parameters, were outlined and identified as solutions to contain the rib fracturing identified by the modeling results.

The Reefton Goldfield has produced 67 t of gold from mesothermal vein gold deposits in metasedimentary rocks of the Greenland Group (Cambrian-Ordovician). The Globe-Progress deposit contributed 13.2 t (418,000 oz) of this total, predominantly from quartz veins. Recently a resource of 14 Mt at 1.96 g/t Au (27.5 t or 882,300 oz of contained gold) has been delineated at Globe-Progress in quartz vein remnants and disseminated within adjacent sedimentary rock, much of which has been locally brecciated. The breccias consist of quartz vein and sedimentary wall rock fragments set in a matrix of clay ærock flourÆ and sulphide (arsenopyrite plus minor pyrite and stibnite). Gold, closely associated with sulphide, is disseminated within the breccia. Disseminated gold also occurs in massive siltstone and sandstone adjacent to the quartz veins and breccias. Exploration drilling at Globe-Pogress, and several other Reefton prospects (e.g. Capleston, Merrijigs, Big River and Alexander River), has intersected zones of disseminated arsenopyrite carrying up to 20 g/t more gold. These mineralised sediments commonly have little or no megascopic quartz and or carbonate veining. There is little visible indication of former primary or secondary permeability for the passage of hydrothermal fluid and deposition of gold. However, porosity and permeability were formerly present in inter-granular pore spaces and microveinlets now filled with quartz, carbonate and K-mica. The Fosterville gold deposit in Victoria bears many similarities to the Globe-Progress deposit at Reefton, in terms of age, host rocks, hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation style. Many ofthe disseminated deposits in Nova Scotia, including deposits at North Brookfield and Moose River (Touquoy Zone), have similar characteristics to the Reefton disseminated mineralisation, but commonly have abundant pyrrhotite and some deposits have disseminated metal alloy grains of complex metallurgy.

A method of measuring the degree of contact between grains of 1 phase in multiphase alloys is derived. It is shown that the number and the areas of contacts between grains can be determined by metallographic analysis. Relations between the area of contact, the dihedral angle, and the mean free path of spherical grains are developed. It is often desirable to interpret the mechanical behavior of alloys in terms of structural features observed under the microscope. A quantitative description of microstructures of multi-phase alloys requires consideration of geometrical and topological factors such as the amount, size, and shape of grains and the continuity of the constituent phases. The number and dimensions of grains may be metallographically determined by applying the methods described by Smith and Guttman1 and by Fullman2 in their papers on the measurement of particle size and internal boundaries in opaque bodies. The present work intends to show that the same methods can be used to evaluate some of the parameters of phase continuity; namely, contiguity, number of contacts, and areas of contact of grains of 1 phase. Application of these concepts may be found in such problems as the calculation of electrical conductivity of 2-phase alloys, or the evaluation of the length of fracture path through grains of a brittle phase more or less dispersed in a matrix. I. DEFINITION The following definitions and derivations are based on 2-phase alloys, of which the units of the microstructure are grains. Contiguity is defined as the average fraction of surface area shared by 1 grain of a phase with all neighboring grains of the same phase. In a 2-phase alloy of constituents A and B, the contiguity of phase B is given by: where Cb is the contiguity of phase B aBß is the average area of contact between a grain of phase B and adjacent grains of phase B, aAB is the average area of contact between a grain of phase B and adjacent grains of phase A. The contiguity is a measure of the average degree of contact between grains of phase B in the 2-phase mixture. The ratio varies from 0 to 1 as the distribution of phase B changes from a completely dispersed to a fully agglomerated structure. Smith and Guttman1 have shown that the relative areas of 2 kinds of interfaces in a volume are directly proportional to the number of interfaces of each type intersected by a random line. The lines can be drawn on metallographically prepared surfaces as long as these are random sections through the sample. The contiguity ratio of phase B then becomes: Cb = 2NBB/NAB + 2N BB [2] where: NBB is the number of interfaces between grains of phase B intersected per unit length of random line. Nab is the number of interfaces between grains of phase B and grains of phase A intersected per unit length of random line. The factor 2 arises in Eq. [2] because each interface B-B is associated with 2 grains of B-phase, whereas the interface A-B involves only 1 grain of B-phase. The calculations of contiguity do not require any assumption as to volume fraction, particle size, or particle shape. Fullman2 gives an expression for the determination of the mean free path between particles. The mean free path PB between grains of phase A, i.e., through grains or agglomerates of phase B, may be found from the relationship: PB =2fB/NAB [3] where fB is the volume fraction of phase B. The calculation of the mean free path is independent of grain shape and grain size distribution. Fe-6.5wt.%Si alloy has excellent soft magnetic properties compared with conventional silicon steel. It is very brittle at room temperature due to appearance of ordered phases, like B2 and DO3. In this paper, we investigate the effect of ordering on cold workability of this alloy. Methods of rapid quenching and hot rolling were utilized. It is found that rapid quenching and proper heat treatment of the hot rolled sheet could decrease the degree of order due to the very high solidification rate and high cooling rate. The rapid quenched sheet and hot rolled sheet after proper heat treatment could be cold rolled without crack. Microstructure, phase ordering, micro hardness, and cold rolling properties were investigated by Optical Microscope, X-ray Diffraction, Micro Hardness Indenter and Four-high Mill.

Underground coal mining is the most hazardous industrial occupation in the United States.. Haulage accidents in underground coal mines contribute substantially to the occupational hazards of this type of work. In an effort to improve mine safety, a completely hydraulic transport system has been designed to move coal from the mine face to the preparation plant. The capital investment for the hydraulic haulage system is great, and the size of the mine developed for this study is large. Mine production for the conventional haulage mine is 1. 1 million tons of clean coal per year, while the hydraulic haulage mine will produce over 1.6 million tons of clean coal per year. Safety statistics for a number of mines of this size are shown.
