This report presents the development of a raw coal concentration sensor for hydro-transport of coal and refuse (rock) from underground mines, and the results of an international test series carried out at the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute in Golden, Colorado, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Hydraulic Transport Research Facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Saskatchewan Research Facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, and the Steinkohlenbergbauverein Test Facility in Essen, West Germany. Test results are presented for a three-component sensor and also for the more rugged two-component (all nuclear) sensor.

A seismic risk assessment method has been developed for application to rockburst prone deep-level mining sites which have sufficient seismic coverage. The technique utilises several seismic hazard parameters simultaneously and assesses the seismic risk on a daily basis according to the individual levels of these parameters. Critical levels are determined from investigation of the long-term behaviour of the parameters in relation to recorded potentially damaging seismic events. Although mining is an old industry its management is quite a new science, and its complications are now being recognised as demanding expert knowledge in many branches of technical and professional education. Not the least amongst these isaccountancy, for probably its most important problem is "How to control the expenditure." Unlike most businesses a mining company stands almost entirely in the light of a purchaser in the world's markets, and not as a seller, except say for product so the established and perfected systems of modern industries cannot be adopted for mining purposes. For this reason it has been left for late years to consider the matter seriously, and now a number of well-managed concerns have devised costs systems to suit their own requirements.Very little, however, has been published and even that is disjoined and difficult to make use of. Some of the costs systems in vogue, although elaborate and imposing, are not of very great value for keeping check on wasteful expenditure, or for displaying the commercial effect brought about 'by any particular change in practice, or by an addition or alteration to a portion of existing plant.

MINING operations in the Waihi mine began, under the present proprietorship in the year 1889. Previous to this, and as far back as the year 1880, the presence of reefs in the Martha Hill had been known, and surface working on a small scale had beencarried out, without any great measure of success. The only method of treatment in use at this time was the old system of light stamps, amalgamating tables and berdans, and recovery by this method being low, little margin for profit was left, so thatthe property in these days was not considered of great importance and work on the area was only carried on spasmodically by different owners.On the transfer of the leases to the present company, calcining, dry crushing, and hot pan amalgamation was adopted as the method of treatment, and this system was continued till the more modern cyanide process was introduced and applied. As themethods of treatment and gold-saving became more efficient with the application of more modern and scientific processes, the importance and future prospects of the mine became more and more pronounced, and mining on a larger and more comprehensive scale was gradually established.As in the case of ore treatment, mining methods in the early stages were not as far adv.anced as the adopted practice of today, and numerous shafts, levels close together in vertical height.

Iron ore fines are agglomerated to produce sinter, which is an important feed material for blast furnaces worldwide. A model of the iron ore sintering process has been developed with the objective of being representative of the sinter pot test, the standard laboratory process in which the behaviour of specific sinter feed mixtures is evaluated. The model aims to predict sinter quality, including chemical quality and physical strength, as well as key sinter process performance parameters such as production rate and fuel consumption rate. The model uses the finite difference method (FDM) to solve heat and mass distributions within the sinter pot over the height and time dimensions. This model can further be used for establishing empirical relationships between modelled parameters and measured sinter properties. Inputs into the model include the feed material physical properties, chemical compositions, and boundary conditions. Submodels describe relationships between applied pressure differential and gas flow rate through the bed of granulated fine ore particles, combustion of carbonaceous material, calcination of fluxes, evaporation and condensation of water, and melting and solidification. The model was applied to typical sinter test conditions to illustrate the results predicted, and to test sensitivities to parameters such as feed void fraction, feed coke percentage, and the fraction of combustion heat transferred to the gas phase. A model validation and improvement study should follow, ensuring sinter test results are free from experimental errors by conducting repeated tests.

The metallographic structures most frequently encountered in rifle barrels, and which are illustrated by the accompanying photomicrographs, fall naturally into two groups, distinguished by the method used to, produce in the stock a physical condition having the requisite properties. The fist group consists of "rolled" barrels; that is, barrels subjected to hot working by rolling in or near the critical range. In the second group, the stock, which is smaller in diameter than the first, is upset to form the butt end and is then heat treated by giving it a quench and a draw. These barrels will be referred to as " heat-treated " barrels. The structure of the rolled barrels resembles closely that of the same steel after annealing. There is the same network of excess ferrite outlining the grain boundaries, but the grains themselves are composed of sorbite rather than pearlite. The grain size is closely related to the rolling temperature. The critical-point curves of this grade of steel, which is approximately 0.50 to 0.60 per cent. of carbon and 1.00 to 1.30 per cent, of manganese, show a single very pronounced point between 1300" and 1350" F. (704" and 732" C.). Barrels rolled within this temperature range give an exceedingly fine grain, shown in Fig. 1. In fact, the grains may be so fine that, at a low magnification, they may be confused with the heat-treated structure shown in Fig. 6. A magnification of 500 diameters, however, will always resolve a rolled barrel into the characteristic structure shown in Fig. 2. As the temperature is increased, the grains are found to be larger. If, on the other hand, the rolling temperature is below the critical range, the structure previous to rolling will not be obliterated, the only effect of rolling being to elongate the coarse sorbite grains in the direction of rolling, Fig. 3. This distortion is greatest at the muzzle. Heat-treated barrels are quenched in oil from above the critical range, which should give a martensitic structure, Fig. 4, but the presence of some troostite in the martensite is frequently noted when the quench has not been sufficiently drastic, Fig. 5. The structure brought about by the subsequent draw is not so striking, though quite as typical. It is sorbitic or sorbito-pearlitic, and under a low magnification appears almost homogeneous, as in the case of fine grains of pepper and salt well mixed together, Fig. 6. Soda roasting of concentrates from Mouat, Montana, was performed in a temperature range of 450 to 650 degrees C and chromium was solubilised by water leaching at room temperature. It was found that high extraction yields of chromium were primarily dependent on the conversion of Cr3+ to Cr6+ during the roasting step, and this was enhanced significantly by simple attrition of chromite particles during this step. Gangue impurities (mainly Si) were more detrimental to Cr extraction than lattice impurities such as Al or Mg. It appears that oxidation proceeds into grains along a preferred crystallographic plane in the cubic lattice of the chromite. Up to 19 chemical parameters were studied in flotation pulps in six Australian lead-zinc concentrators with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the nature of, and changes in, the chemical environment. This paperdiscusses pH, redox potential, and oxygen concentrations, which were all measured continuously.Two plants operated at natural pH in slightly acid circuit and one at natural pH in alkaline circuit, and pH was stable at all these plants. In two plants varying amounts of cement fill were present in mill feed and pHwas variable. At the other plant pH was controlled with soda ash and lime.Redox potentials became more positive as the pulp passed through the plant. The minimum change was 20 mV and the maximum about 250 mV. Potentials tended to be variable at any point early in the circuit, but were more stable later on. In some plants reagent additions had no noticeable effect on redox potentials. However in the two plants operating in acid circuit the redox potential of .zinc rougher feed was markedly affected by changes in copper sulphate addition rate. Sodium sulphite additions had an effect at other plants.Oxygen concentrations in grinding circuits tended to be low (30 per cent of saturation) and very variable. Flotation was usually conducted in pulps at least 90 per cent saturated with oxygen. Addition of sodium sulphite had a marked effect on oxygen content in one plant, but less effect in two others.Statistically significant relationships were found in some plants between pH and redox potential, redox potential and oxygen saturation, and oxygen saturation and pH.Improved control of copper sulphate and sodium sulphite additions could result from applications of this work.

"Campbell mines has been in operation since 1948. Part of the process consists of roasting of a flotation concentrate which contains arsenopyrite.At present operation level the milling rate averages about 850 t.p.d. and about 48 t.p.d. of concentrate is roasted. The gas emissions at present contain between 3 and 3.5 t.p.d. of arsenic trioxide, about2 - 2.5 t.p.d. of particulate matter and between 19 - 25 t.p.d. of sulphur dioxide. The particulate is extremely fine calcine dust and it assays about 4 oz. Of gold per ton.Until 1974 the gas was discharged untreated through a 125' stack.UntreatedThe decision was made in 1972 to erect a gas treatment plant, construction ran through 1973 and operation began in 1974. The cost of the installation was about 1.3 million dollars.On investigation the process technology, it was apparent that the plant operated by giant Yellowknife for the same purpose was the model we should study. I would like to acknowledge the fine cooperation we had from giant, the plant that emerged is very similar to theirs and incorporates some improvements suggested by them and based on their operating experience.The plant is designed to remove arsenic and solid dust and it has no provisions to remove sulphur dioxide.We depend upon the 125' stack to assure adequate dilution. Because of the nearby airport the stack cannot exceed 125'. A stack burner is provided that can ""y used to heat the stack gas and carry it higher into the atmosphere when there is an inversion condition.The removal of arsenic from hot gas is fairly simple. The sublimation point is about 425°f, a few degrees above this point the arsenic is a gas and a few degrees below it condenses into a solid form. The arsenic could have been removed by simply dropping the temperature below the condensation point and collecting all the solids in a baghouse. This would have removed the possibility of recovering the gold in the calcine dust and would have produced an impure and more bulky arsenic material to be placed in safe storage. The decision was made to collect the solid dust in a hot electrostatic precipitator operating above the sublimation point and subsequently lower the temperature below the condensation point and collect the arsenic in a baghouse."

"Increased production of explosives in the United States in 1933 compared with 1932 is shown by statistics compiled by the Demographical Division, Health and Safety Branch, United States Bureau of Mines. The figures relate only to explosives used for industries purposes, such as mining, quarrying, and road building, and do not cover nonindustrial explosives, such as ammunition or fireworks. Industrial explosives include black blasting powder, permissible explosives, 5 and high explosives other than permissibles figures in the tables of this report were compiled from reports covering sales by the individual companies manufacture of explosives in the United States in 1933. Because of the close agreement among the several series of figures, the quantity of explosives sold is considered as reflecting production and consumption, and the three terms ""sales"", ""production"", and ""consumption"" are used interchangeably in the discussion unless otherwise stated.Of the principal industries that use high construction operations accounted for the largest percentage of increase in consumption during 1933; metal mining and quarrying also used more of this class of explosives than in the previous year. Coal mining is the chief consumer of permissible explosives; the figures for 1933 showed that bituminous-coal mining used a larger quantity than in 1932, and that anthracite mines also showed a small increase. Although a net increase of less than 1 percent in consumption was reported for black blasting powder, large increases in use of this class of explosives were reported for metal mining, miscellaneous types of work, and bituminous-coal mining. Power Plant. The power for the metallurgical operations is supplied by the company's own power plant, which is centrally situated. Power is also supplied to Metal Manufactures Ltd. and Australian Fertilizers Ltd., both being adjacently situated to this company'sworks.The power supplied is direct current, 250 volts, and is obtained from direct-current generators coupled to turbines and to Belliss & Morcom triple expansion engines.The steam supply is obtained from Babcock & Wilcox water tubular boilers, the fuel used being drawn from the South Coast coal mines.Transport. - The works are connected by standard broad gauge railway to both the jetties and the Government railway. Two steam and three electric locomotives are employed in this service.In addition to its own requirements, transport is provided to Metal Manufactures Ltd. and Australian Fertilizers Ltd.The various operating departments are connected by a 2-ft. gauge railway operated by Jeffrey electric locomotives.Ore Storage and Sample Mill - These departments are connected by broad gauge line to the Government railway and jetties. All material which is railed or shipped to the works from the various centres is weighed, sampled and placed in the ore store, or outside gantries, before being treated.Since the whole of the material received is either purchased or treated on a toll charge, great care is necessary in the weighing and sampling of all the receipts.Assay Oflice--The assay office is divided into several laboratories, where analyses of the various purchased materials and works samples are carried out.

"A novel reagent-free method of extracting gold from gravity middling concentrates in the Yukon placer fields is presented in this paper. This method exploits the malleability of gold by submitting concentrates to grinding in a rod mill. Brittle waste minerals are effectively reduced, whereas malleable gold particles are flattened and are then extracted by classification through sieves. Recoveries in the field using a laboratory-sized rod mill regularly exceeded 90%, whereas correlation laboratory tests indicated recovery to be most sensitive to the mill charge size. This method has broad potential, including application to the gravity circuits of large hard-rock processing circuits.RÉSUMÉ Cet article présente une nouvelle méthode sans agents réactifs d’extraction de l’or dans les concentrés gravimétriques mixtes que l’on trouve dans les districts placériens du Yukon. Cette méthode exploite la malléabilité de l’or en broyant des concentrés dans un broyeur à barres. Les déchets miniers cassants sont bien réduits, alors que les particules d’or malléables sont écrasées puis extraites par classification au travers de cribles. Si les récupérations sur le site à l’aide d’un broyeur à barres de laboratoire excèdent 90 %, les essais de concordance en laboratoire indiquent que la récupération est très sensible à la taille de la charge du broyeur. Cette méthode présente un grand potentiel, notamment une application possible aux circuits gravimétriques des grands circuits de traitement des roches dures.INTRODUCTIONExploiting the high density of gold to separate it from waste materials is the oldest known mineral processing technique. This basic technique is still widely used in gravity concentration circuits today; however, gravity processing invariably results in high-value middlings, especially in the Yukon placer gold fields. In addition to having a uniquely high density, gold is also the most malleable metal. This unique malleability can be exploited to extract gold from otherwise inaccessible gravity middlings.The Yukon placer gold industry has been continuously ongoing since the 1860s, and today produces approximately 60,000 oz t (1.87 million grams) of crude gold annually, most of which is from the Klondike region near Dawson City (Van Loon & Bond, 2014). It is important to note that Yukon placer miners do not use any chemical extraction methods; rather, gravity upgrading methods are the sole processing techniques used. Placer deposits are typically coarse, well liberated, and naturally gravity concentrated and recoverable, thus making more expensive chemical extraction unnecessary (Mitchell, Evans, & Styles, 1997). Furthermore, a strict permitting regime, environmental concerns, lack of expertise, and fear of repercussions from regulators prevent miners from attempting more advanced processing methods, such as flotation or cyanidation. Even simple chemical extractions like mercury amalgamation have not been implemented for decades, with one observer noting that, as many as 30 years ago, “the art of mercury for amalgamating appear[ed] to be dying [in the Yukon]” (Osler, 1983)."

O ar soprado é uma das principais utilidades responsáveis pelo processo de transformação do minério de ferro em gusa no Auto Forno. Para que ocorra o processo de redução o ar soprado é superaquecido nos regeneradores dos autos fornos a uma temperatura de 1.300°C. Este energético é fornecido na CSN-UPV pelos turbos sopradores da Central Termoelétrica nº 2 (CTE#2), área dos Motos Sopradores 1 e 2 e os turbos sopradores n°1 e 3 da CTE#1 que operam com a velocidade reduzida 24 horas soprando para atmosfera e consumindo vapor de 30Bar. Devido à obsolescência do sistema de ar soprado da CTE#1, alto custo de operação e risco para a segurança operacional, este trabalho apresenta o estudo do problema em questão, a metodologia utilizada para desativação do ar soprado da CTE-1 e a redução de custo.

To reduce the frequency of mining incidents and improve safety and production efficiency, it is important to develop technology for the autonomous positioning and navigation of mining equipment, without the assistance of satellite navigation signals. In this study we review the current technological environment for positioning and navigation underground and present several integrated navigation strategies. Existing underground positioning and navigation technology is described, and the performances of different methods based on this technology analysed and compared. The combination types and positioning effects of underground positioning and navigation strategies are discussed. Recent research directions for filtering methods and positioning estimation algorithms for underground positioning and navigation are reviewed. Finally, we summarize the future direction of underground positioning and navigation technology and related algorithms.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF CLASSIFICATION WHAT is the use of a classification of mineral deposits? From the days of Agricola, the founder of the science of ore deposits, successive authors on the subject have attempted classifications, none of which have attained unanimous indorsement of miners, engineers, or geologists. The miner and engineer naturally have little regard for a classification that does not help them to find ore. Mining geologists may share this feeling, and deplore the overemphasis that may be placed on classification by their academic brothers. Apparent effects of such overemphasis may be reflected by students or new graduates who have grown to think that each deposit must fit perfectly into some pigeonhole of the more or less arbitrary scheme that has been drilled into them. Diversity in mineral deposits as in other natural phenomena, however, is too great to be fully expressed in the usual tabular classification, and experience is essential for the appreciation of the value or usefulness of a classification. The succession of classifications has closely followed the growth of the science of mineral deposits and reflects that growth, as well perhaps as the limited or comprehensive viewpoint of each proponent. The earliest classifications were based on metal content, and were superseded by those based mainly on form of deposit. Source of materials also became a basis, and was followed by physical and chemical conditions and processes. In spite of this development it is interesting to note that in many of the latest reports on mining regions the authors adopt special classifications suited for their particular districts. Some of these, like the earliest classifications, are based primarily on metal content, and others are most conveniently based on form, and it may be convenient to modify these by reference to source of material or temperature of deposition. Some, including the writers, after noting these different usages, have refused to worry much over classification as an ultimate objective, but,

The limit of pressure to which an underground dam may with safety be subjected, is a question that-as far as the writer knows has not received the same attention from authorities on engineering construction, or practical mining, that has been accorded to questions on which the design and strength of other structures or machines in connection with a mine are based. That dams may, under certain conditions, be constructed to resist water under great pressure is a known fact. But the difficulty of demonstrating beforehand that any proposed structure of this kind will withstand the pressure and be effective is, owing to the indeterminate nature of some of the risks to be provided against, very great. In the present state of our knowledge it may almost be laid down as a rule, that a dam of this kind should not be undertaken where grave consequences would attend failure until experience of structures where the physical conditions are similar, but where there are no such risks, has given assurance that such work would stand.In Mines and Minerals for May, 1900, there is published a paper by Mr. James McNaughton describing the construction of three underground dams in the iron mining district of Michigan.The first of these was put in to hold back a flow of 750 gallons per minute, which when pent up created a pressure of 276 pounds per square inch, showing that the height of the sustained column was about 635 ·feet. The hole through which the water issued was in the bottom of the cross cut it was enlarged by removing all loose rock for a depth of 18 ft...

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is engaged in many diverse programs fur improving mine safety. One area of interest to the Bureau is new and improved means for minimizing the hazards of accidental gas ignition or electrical shock should the frame of an off-track machine assume potential above ground. Various means presently used to prevent such occurences are the use of ground fault detectors for phase to ground faults in ac machines, and grounding conductors and diodes in dc machines. In a three phase ac power center, a phase to ground fault may be detected by monitoring the current in the grounding resistor which is required between the power center neutral on the load side of the power center transformer and ground. Another method for detecting a ground fault is to pass the three load conductors through a toroidal core transformer. The phase currents vectorially add up to zero if none of the phases are faulted, and hence the voltage of the transformer secondary is either zero or not zero if one of the phases is unbalanced or faulted.

Megascopic and microscopic studies of cleats and mining induced cleavage in Ihe first workings at Leichhardt Colliery reveal the presence of four distinct fracture sets. Microscopic studies confirm underground observations of the fracture sets.The most likely order of formation of the fractures is (i) "butt" cleats (ii) facc cleats (iii) shallow dipping faults (iv) mining induced cleavage. Three fracture sets apparently formed by tensiIe failure. Microscopy shows that the mining induced cleavage surfaces have preferred starting or lerminating points at the extremity of a "butt" cleat and a vitrite-dull coal band boundary. It is postulated that the induced cleavage begins at 'butt' cleats which behave as Griffith flaws under high compression around Leichhardt Colliery faces. Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas are associated with only those workings which are affected by mining induced cleavage and occur at or adjacent to working faces.

The Ute-Ulay project area is located approximately five miles west of Lake City, in Hinsdale County, Colorado. The Ute-Ulay Mine site is approximately one mile east of the project area. The elevation of the site is 9,200 feet and is adjacent to Henson Creek (Figure 1) [ ] The Ute-Ulay Mining complex is an inactive gold, silver, and zinc mining/milling operation, that operated from the 1880?s until the 1970?s, and sporadically into the late 1990?s. The mining complex comprises several levels of underground mines, a flotation mill, and an abandoned town site. Due to the narrow, steep sided canyon, milled tailings were pumped upstream one mile in a sluice box to a wider section of the canyon, and deposited into five tailings impoundments and one berm located between the impoundments. An estimated 9,000 cubic yards (yd3) of fine grained tailings were located in the impoundments adjacent to the creek. The Ute-Ulay project area consisted of the mill tailings impoundments located upstream from the historic mine.
