In order for a taxpayer to produce income, he may be required to exhaust his capital assets. With respect to the mining industry, those exhaustible capital assets may result in income tax deductions under the general categories of depreciation, obsolescence, losses and depletion. The percentage depletion deduct ion concept is not based upon "economic" depletion, or "geological" depletion theories. Instead, it is wholly an income tax concept created by Congress. This is significant in that, in its application, tax depletion has no adherence to traditional economic or geological depletion concepts For example, the Internal Revenue Code limits percentage depletion to 50 percent of the miner's net income for the taxable period.1/ Should a particular miner extract and sell 500,000 tons of material during the year, but at a loss, he receives no percentage depletion. The same would apply to an electric utility which mined its own coal. Should its mining costs exceed the "going price" for coal, as established by actual arm's-length sales in the market, the utility has no net income, and is therefore not entitled to percentage depletion.2/

Auriferous sulfide ores often contain very finely disseminated gold and other precious metal particles inside the sulfide crystals. The encapsulation of precious metal particles gives rise to the refractory nature of such ores to current extraction methods. As a result, these fractions are frequently lost in the tailings. The purpose of this work was to investigate the feasibility of pretreating these refractory tailings with bioleaching before employing standard extraction techniques such as cyanidation. Leadville gold ore tailings containing auriferous pyrite were first concentrated by froth flotation. The pyrite concentrate was treated for different periods of time with 12 weeks adapted thiobacillus ferrooxidans before cyanide leaching. The bioleaching of the concentrate before cyanide leaching increased the gold extraction from 32% to 95% and that of silver from 48% to more than 98%.

It is a vital aspect of mineral production and conditions must be predicted over a long time frame in all aspects of the industry from exploration to plant construction. Although many government agencies as well as private industry make forecasts, there are insufficent "make good" analyses performed. The performance of more such studies could sharpen forecasting ability.

Crystalline Flake Graphite is a strategic mineral. Since 1954 nearly all North American consumption has been imported from offshore. The Bouthillier Project in Quebec, Canada, is Orrwell Energy's bid to enter the market. Milling of flake graphite is considered easy, yet more problems have been encountered in flowsheet and plant design than in most other minerals. A fresh approach to existing technology was taken, giving results that are highly satisfactory. The key to graphite liberation without flake deterioration is found to be in autogenous grinding. In addition to producing marketable coarse graphite by such autogenous grinding, flotation and tabling, super purity fines can be produced using repeated regrinding, elutriation and flotation. This paper discusses the design of a 500 TPD plant based upon the results obtained from bench and pilot plant studies.

The stability problems of back- filled spoil banks became more important since the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 was enacted. The material properties of spoil banks were categorized as the first part of the study and spoil slope stability was evaluated using computer programs as a second part. Emphasis was placed on the effects of natural barriers, which is required in the federal law.

The direct precipitation of uranium with hydrogen peroxide has been known since 1877. Commercial use of the process began in the 1960's. During 1967 the Bureau of Mines assisted the Climax Uranium Co., Grand Junction, Colorado in the development of a uranyl peroxide precipitation process to control a molybdenum impurity problem (1). Atlas Minerals, Moab, Utah has used hydrogen peroxide to control vanadium and sodium levels in their uranium concentrates since 1969 (2). Recently, the use of hydrogen peroxide by the uranium industry has grown, particularly since the increased demand for uranium has led to the processing of low grade ores. Impurities present in low grade ores can be concentrated with the uranium during milling and will substantially complicate the refining of uranium yellowcake concentrates. Consequently, commercial nuclear fuel processors have imposed stringent specifications and penalties to control these impurities. The ability to produce a pure uranium yellowcake can eliminate penalty or reprocessing costs. Hydrogen peroxide precipitation of uranium is specific and quantitative, producing a very high purity product.

Nothing in Turkey is simple. Its his¬tory is long and convoluted, its culture fascinating, its metallogeny diverse, and its geology very complex. This article will focus on the geology of western Anatolia and the precious metals poten¬tial of this third of Turkey. Any gold produced by mines in Tur¬key since the early 1900s has been a by-product of the mining for other met¬als, such as copper from the massive sulfide deposits of the Pontics. Archaeological records, however, prove that gold was mined from the Pactolus (present day Gediz) River and refined by Croesus at Sardis in about 550 BC. Other records and legends make it possible that gold was mined before 1200 BC for the Homeric City of Troy (Priams treasure?) about 25 km (15 miles) east of Canakkale at Mad¬endag and Kartaldag. A final legend of antiquity suggesting gold in what is now Turkey relates to King Midas. And, indeed, the city-state belonging to a king of that name has been recognized near the city of Eskise¬hir. More recently, precious metals have been mined at Madendag-Kartaldag in the late 1800s. Arapdag, near Izmir, remains the only "authenticated" epith¬ermal precious metal deposit in Turkey (Mosier et al., 1985). With this spotty record, why the sud¬den interest shown by at least five Euro¬pean-based, three or four US-based, and several other international mining firms and their Turkish subsidiaries? Like other aspects of Turkey, the complete answer is not simple but, reduced to its basics, has three parts. Turkey, relative to many developing nations, has a stable, democratic form of government (although it also has a for¬midable bureaucracy) whose currency exchange rate is premised on the US dollar. New laws promulgated since 1983 have opened the country and welcomed foreign investment. Some have even provided investment incentives. The Mining Law of August 1985 made sweeping reforms of the old land tenure system. This law made it possible for a foreign-based company to have a wholly-owned Turkish subsidiary en¬gaged in mining. Equally important is the belated recognition that western Anatolia, while geologically compli¬cated, is today basically a province Neogene extensional tectonics having many of the geologic attributes of the leading gold producing province of the US - the Basin and the Range. Geologic rationale for precious metals exploration Tectonic/lithologic framework: Alle¬gorically and simplistically, Anatolia during early Neogene (middle Miocene) can be likened to a tube of toothpaste with the cap off. It is squeezed in the vise formed by the Arabian plate mi¬grating north toward the southwest end of a stable Asian platform. The "tube" was compressed. It could not expand to the east because it was sealed by what is now southern Russia and Iran. The filling of the tube escaped to the west, in the direction in which the cap was miss¬ing (Fig. 1). So developed during the middle to late Miocene the western-most struc¬tural province of Anatolia. This was done by a process aptly termed tectonic "escape" by Sengor et al (1985). This province is dominated by exten¬sional tectonics much like the Basin and Range of the western US and has an estimated extension of between 30% and 50%. The most striking manifesta¬tion of this extension is the 10 to 11 major east-west trending grabens (Ge¬diz, Buyuk Mendares, Kocuk Mendares, etc.) and intervening horsts, although a much greater number of smaller, gener¬ally northeast-striking grabens and half

Introduction Many gold and silver ores are refractory to conventional processing technologies. Thus, precious metals recovery is uneconomic. These resources can consist of ores, flotation concentrates, mill tailings, and other reserves. The refractory nature of these materials can be ascribed to such components as iron sulfide minerals, silica minerals, tellurides, organic compounds, and sulfosalts. Precious metals locked within iron sulfide minerals account for a large number of refractory gold ores. These minerals consist principally of pyrite or arsenopyrite. They must be oxidized to liberate the encapsulated precious metal and allow its contact with the leaching agent. Carbonaceous gold ores represent a unique class of refractory precious metal ores in general. Not only does gold encapsulation by iron sulfide minerals occur (Hausen, 1985), but these ores also contain organic matter that interferes with gold recovery by cyanidation. Direct interference can be attributed to either occlusion of gold within organic matter or formation of a stable gold-carbon complex. The magnitude of this problem is debatable. Wells and Mullens (1973) examined two carbonaceous gold ores and found no association between the gold and carbonaceous material. A more common problem is indirect interference, whereby the aurocyanide complex formed during cyanidation is sorbed by the native organic matter and is not available for recovery. This phenomenon is referred to as "preg robbing" (Osseo-Asare et al., 1984; Hausen and Bucknam, 1984). Guay (1981) summarized various methods that can reduce preg robbing during processing of carbonaceous gold ores. However, some are not applicable to carbonaceous ores that have significant amounts of gold locked in iron sulfide minerals. Several methods exist for oxidizing iron sulfide minerals and rendering refractory precious metal ore amenable to conventional recovery processes. These include various embodiments of roasting (Jha and Kramer, 1984; Brown, 1984; Arriagada and Os-seo-Asare, 1984; Smith, 1986), pressure oxidation (Muir et al., 1984; Beattie et al., 1985; Thompson, 1986; Weir et al., 1986; Argall, 1986), and chemical oxidation (Scheiner, 1971; Jackson, 1983; Van Weert et al., 1986). Each process has been successfully used for refractory precious metal ores. In many instances, however, their use is precluded by capital and operating costs relative to the value of the ore. An alternative to these methods is microbial pretreatment - a biological process whereby iron sulfide minerals are degraded and the liberated precious metal values can be recovered by conventional technologies. Bioleaching refractory precious metal ores is a relatively new concept compared to roasting and chemical oxidation. It is rapidly becoming established as a viable pretreatment alternative. Numerous studies have been conducted in the laboratory and on a pilot scale (Yudina et al., 1979; Lawrence and Bruynesteyn, 1983; Pol 'kin et al., 1985; Marchant, 1985; Livesey-Goldblatt, 1985; Gibbs et al., 1986). Comparative tests have demonstrated that bioleaching can be equal to or better than roasting or pressure oxidation in terms of product recovery and process economics (Fridman and Savari, 1983; Livesy-Goldblatt et al., 1983; Karavaiko et al., 1985; Gilbert et al., 1986; Hackl et al., 1986). Bioleaching's main drawback is that pretreatment requires days rather than hours. This can lead to excessive operating costs for difficult-to-treat ores. Hoses provide a variety of critical functions in nearly every mining operation. Care must be taken when selecting, installing, and maintaining hoses to insure maximum hose life. This article provides some tips on selecting, installing, and maintaining hoses, and gives some background on hose construction and safety. In the mining industry, hoses are used for everything from hydraulic systems that power drills and hammers, to suction systems that carry away dust and debris. Hoses are used on such a large scale that a detailed discussion of specific applications would require many volumes. Dayco Corp. has, however, provided these basic and brief guidelines on how to select and maintain hoses for mining applications. Hose Construction Industrial hoses are classified as much by construction as they are by application. So, it is a good idea to start any discussion of hoses with a description of their basic construction. There are four basic components to hoses: the tube, reinforcement, cover, and couplings. The tube is the inner core or lining, and is usually made of smooth rubber or plastic. Rubber or plastic composition is scientifically determined to be compatible with the materials passing through it, such as fluids, chemicals, gases, or substances. Other considerations in compounding rubber or plastic for the tube are temperature ranges and stresses. In practice, the required compound can be precisely chosen from various charts listing them according to application. There are, however, applications where the compounding of tube rubber or plastic must be customized. The reinforcement hose layer immediately surrounds the tube. As its name implies, this layer gives the hose strength and provides protection for the tube component. Reinforcement must be able to contain the inner forces-pressure and shock-transmitted through the tube, and such external forces as twisting, bending, and crushing. So it is usually made of high tensile strength cord, fabric, or wire that is wrapped, wound, or braided around the tube. The cover is the outermost layer, so it may encounter oils, acids, water, dust, abrasion, and other potentially damaging influences depending, of course, on the application. An appropriate cover material must be selected, usually a rubber compound. Couplings, even though they are a hose attachment, are as vital as any other component and should be considered part of the hose. Couplings are usually made of carbon steel or malleable iron; however, bronze or stainless steel might be used if corrosive chemicals are involved and brass or aluminum might be used for flammable fluids. A coupling is usually in two parts: an insert that fits into the hose bore and contains the threaded male, female, or other type of connection, and the ferrule or collar that fits over the hose and secures the coupling in place. There are, however, some one-part couplings that fit securely into the hose without a ferrule. These are usually limited to low pressure applications and are secured to the hose by clamps or metal bands. Some fittings can also be permanently "built-in" as the hose is made. Couplings can be classified as reusable or permanent. The reusables can be removed when the old hose expires and used again on a new hose. The permanent types are crimped or swaged on at the factory or in the field (using special equipment) and must be discarded with the hose. Although couplings are most commonly thought of as having threaded fittings, there is another type called "quick connect." Introduction Computer-based haul truck dispatching has been operational at Tyrone since May, 1980. The system, known as Dispatch, has accomplished significant productivity gains compared with the former method of manual radio dispatching. These gains translate into a reduction in equipment requirements or an increase in production. An operational mine may choose to increase production or reduce the number of equipment shifts operated, resulting in substantial operating savings. Dispatch Description The core of Dispatch is a VAX 11/780 computer. Originally purchased with 512 kbytes of memory, the system is now upgraded to 3.75 Mbytes to accommodate users from all areas of the operation. Dispatch alone requires 200 kbytes of locked-in memory, with an additional 300 kbytes of memory available on a top priority basis. The computer, located in the Tyrone Branch general office building, is connected by under-ground cables to the dispatch tower, 3.2 km (2 miles) from the general office. Four two-paired lines are used to drive two cathode ray tubes, a printer, and the Dispatch master panel. One CRT continuously displays pertinent pit information for the dispatcher's use. Routinely displayed transactions include truck assignments, changes in shovel material type, truck and shovel breakdowns and delays, and changes in truck, shovel, or dump status. Er¬ror detection capabilities include late arrival and improper input from the field panels. The second display terminal is used for utility reporting and input functions. Status reports are displayed for availability, position, and material type being handled by any given truck or shovel. Fuel reports are available indicating the time last fueled, quantity of fuel delivered, and the time spent fueling. A truck factor utility reports relative performance to other trucks and a shovel utility reports efficiencies in tons per shovel shift. Instantaneous shift reports and mine status reports are available. Inputs such as lineups, operator changes, new travel times, shovel bias, tie down times, and lunch times are all handled with the utility display terminal. The printer records a hard copy of operating truck locations and production from the beginning of each shift. If there is a system malfunction, the printer copy is readily available to the foreman for radio dispatching. The Dispatch master panel is a microprocessor-based panel that allows the dispatcher to override any computer-assigned transaction. Classification of "bad order" conditions and acceptance of certain field messages is entered through the master panel. This panel communicates with all truck and shovel field panels via UH radio frequency through a repeater tower located on a high ridge contiguous to the mining area. Each truck and shovel field panel unit transmits a coded signal that is identified by the computer. A typical communication sequence between field panels and the computer for one complete truck cycle is: • The truck panel LED display indicates the shovel number to which it is assigned. The truck arrives at its assigned shovel and the operator presses the "Arrive" button on the truck panel. As the computer receives the "Arrive" message, it concludes the return (empty) travel time and begins accumulating idle time before loading. • When the first dipper of muck is placed into the bed of the truck, the operator presses the "Load" button. The computer concludes the truck idle time accumulation and begins the loading time calculation. • When the truck is loaded, the shovel operator presses the "OK"

Introduction The US mineral industry in 1983 participated in the recovery from the recent recession. Compared with 1982, the value of raw nonfuel mineral output rose 8% to $21.2 billion. The $218 billion worth of goods processed from this crude mineral output represented a 9% increase over 1982. Even in real terms, these figures reflect growth. Demand for nonfuel mineral materials, of course, depends on the overall state of the economy, which steadily improved each quarter in 1983. Of particular importance to the mineral industry were surges in key mineral-consuming sectors such as construction and automobile manufacturing. New housing starts rose one-third, to 1.7 million units, while automakers turned out about 35% more cars (6.8 million) and 25% more trucks (2.4 million) than in 1982. These are significant increases, even considering recent trends toward smaller, lighter vehicles, and multiple-unit housing. A comeback for the mineral industry, however, is bound to proceed unevenly, particularly at the beginning. Traditionally, the industry lags behind the rest of the economy during a recovery, and some mineral products respond to overall economic improvement more quickly than others. This pattern has been repeated many times and the industry is used to it. Mineral executives know it is best to be patient and cautious during the first stages of an economic upturn. Many experts say that it may take extraordinary toughness, patience, and caution this time around. Steel Improves Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production - rose 14% to 77 Mt (85 million st), stimulating a 7% rise in domestic iron ore production to 39 Mt (38 million It). Still, the iron ore industry operated at less than half capacity, with most major mines remaining closed for part of the year. Iron ore imports dropped 24% to 10 Mt (11 million st), so demand was partly met by withdrawals from stocks. Despite the increase in steel production for 1983, output remained far below levels of just a few years ago. For example, 1983 production was still 29% less than in 1981. Raw steelmaking capacity actually declined about 10% during the year to 122 Mt (135 million st). The industry continued to cite steel imports, especially those from developing nations, as a major cause of domestic capacity loss. As long as steel production remains weak, steelmaking metals suffer. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about one-third capacity in 1983, with six of the 19 companies involved being closed all year. The US mined no manganese or chromium, and very little nickel, although the country's only nickel mine did resume production in November. Molybdenum production, at 13.6 t (15 st), was only about one-third as much as in 1982. The major molybdenum mines, Climax and Henderson in Colorado, remained closed all year. To meet demand, molybdenum stocks were halved to 19 t (21 st). Mine shipments of tungsten, another mineral tied to steel production, dropped 30% to 1.1 kt (1,200 st) of contained metal. One of the most positive responses to the general economic recovery came from the aluminum smelting industry. By the end of the year, it was operating at about 79% capacity, compared to 59% in January. Nevertheless, the 3.3 Mt (3.64 million st) of primary aluminum produced represented only a slight increase over 1982. Total bauxite imports were about 27% below 1982 levels. [This paper represents a portion of a lager study, concerning dispersion patterns of major, minor and trace elements in wall-rock about ore-bodies in part of the Colorado Mineral Belt. This phase of the work pertains to the Mg/Ca ratio variations in wall-rock adjacent to ore-bodies in two mines of the Alma-Horseshoe Mining District of Central Colorado. The mining district is located 80 miles southwest of Denver (Figure 1) on the east flank of the Mosquito Range. The area is typified by rugged relief with altitudes from 10,500 to 14,000 feet.]

Systematic roof bolting has proven to be a very effective method of mine roof control; however, major roof failures still occur and roof falls still remain the number one occupational hazard of underground miners. Why do some bolted mine roofs fail, while the vast majority of bolted mine roof remains stable and safe to work under? Observations of numerous roof failures indicate that most of the major roof failures* are associated with either: 1) Jointing, faulting or other structural fracture zones; 2) massive shale beds of lenticular structure, or 3) thinly laminated sand-shales. The jointing and faulting present an obvious weakness in the roof rock structure; whereas, the massive shales and laminated sandy-shales create a roof structure with low shear strength and/or modulus of deformation. An observation of major significance is that most bolted mine roofs fail as a unit, and that the thickness of the fall is roughly equivalent to the roof bolt length (See Figure 1). In fact, several operators have experienced the phenomenon of an increase in roof fall thickness with an increase in roof bolt length.

Heap leaching provides a method of economically recovering gold from low grade ores with low capital and reasonable operating costs. As with conventional methods, alkaline cyanide solutions are used for leaching. Since gold (and silver) is (are) present as the native metals, oxygen (as air) is required to oxidatively complex the metals with the cyanide. Oxygen depletion can readily occur adversely affecting recovery. The addition of low levels of hydrogen peroxide during leaching can lead to significant increases in both rate of recovery and total recovery. This process allows for the use of shorter pad times or deeper heaps and increases the gold (silver) concentration to the recovery circuit and thus can reduce cyanide losses by virtue of permitting the use of less total leach solution per ton of ore processed.

The stresses in the heads and shell of a grinding mill are largely dependent on the bending moment produced by the trunnion bearing. By using spherical roller bearings in a special narrow housing a short moment arm is obtained and the bending moment is reduced. For large mills a hydrostatic shoe bearing which also gives a short arm, can be used. Spherical roller bearings also require less maintenance and have a long service life. As the bearings are grease lubricated an automatic lubricator is used instead of an oil lube system. Service data from two Swedish mining companys confirm the fact that the above arrangements provide a long service life.

In an effort to increase recovery in thick and closely spaced coal seams, the Bureau of Hines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is studying the feasibility of introducing three mining methods-high-face longwall, multi-slice longwall, and longwall caving-in western coal operations. Geology plays a significant role in determining the success of such methods. Some of the factors that will affect development are as follows: (1) thickness and three-dimensional configuration of the seam, (2) cleats, joints, and fractures in the coal and roof rock, (3) roof composition and variability, and (4) coal quality and changes in quality within the seam. Through geologic mapping, the presence of many of these factors is predictable prior to development.

The "Hormite Group" was proposed for palygorskite (attapulgite) and sepiolite for their complex magnesium silicate composition and elongate crystals (Martin-Vivaldi and Robertson, 1971). These minerals occur in close association with each other and more complex structural variations may exist (Bailey, 1972). In 1862 Savchenkov used the name palygorskite to describe a mineral from the Palygorsk locality (Hay, 1975), near the Ural Mountains. Ovecharenko and Kukovsky (1984) mention that when mountain leather deposits were prospected in the Palygorsk Division mine it was assumed this unusual mineral was a variety of asbestos. Early mineralogists used the terms "mountain cork" or "mountain leather" when referring to palygorskite. Robertson (1986) mentions that it appears palygorskite was known since Theophrastus&apos; time, ca. 314 BC. J. de Lapparent used "attapulgite" for clays from Attapulgus, GA, and Mormoiron, France, because he thought them different from palygorskite, but the two types were proved to be the same (Bailey et al., 1971). The name attapulgite is still used for the Florida and Georgia deposits when the crystal length to diameter ratio does not exceed 10:1(Merkl, 1989). Georgia palygorskite clays are of much shorter length compared to classic palygorskite. In 1847 Glocker first used the name sepiolite which was called "Meerschaum" by Werner (1788) and Hauy (1801) namedit "Ecume de Mer." Brochant (1802) described low density and white magnesium silicates adding the name Talcum Plasticum and Ecume de Mer. In the Meigs-Attapulgus-Quincy district palygorskite (attapulgite) commonly occurs in two distinct forms referred to as short length palygorskite (Meigs Member) and long length palygorskite (Dogtown Member) (Merkl, 1989). Long length palygorskite crystals (> 10 pm) are rarely observed in the Meigs and Dogtown Members, but when present are in association with dolomite crystals. The short length form is usually less than 2 pm in length and has a low magnesium content whereas the long length form has a high magnesium content and a length greater than 2 pm. The distinctions in morphology are not only important because of the relationship to the origin of the deposits, but also in relation to activity in causing membranolytic activity related to data on palygorskite samples from 9 locations ranging from relatively inert to active in work reported by Nolan et al. (1989). The > 10 pm lengths amounted to only 51 of 17,401 fibers sized. The shortest lengths (< 0.5 pm) were relatively inert. This study pointed out that surface activity, morphology, and chemical differences may be distinctly different within the definition of palygorskite, or for that matter for any individual mineral so that health and other properties must be measured because the name alone does not necessarily indicate uniformity. Palygorskite (attapulgite) fuller&apos;s earth was first sold for drilling mud in 1941. The market for this use expanded slowly and has maintained a level of 7 to 10% of the total US production during the last few years. Most of the fuller&apos;s earth sold for drilling mud comes from the southern part of the Meigs-Attapulgus-Quincy district of Georgia and Florida. Palygorskite clays produced in this area are superior to most other fuller&apos;s earth for mud used in drilling salt formations, but because of high water loss, they are inferior to bentonite where the rocks drilled contain no saltwater. According to Oulton (1965), more than 90 different grades of fuller&apos;s earth are produced. Some of these grades are used for pharmaceuticals designed to absorb toxins, bacteria, and alkaloids; for treatment of dysentery; for purifying water and dry cleaning fluids, dry cleaning powders and granules; for the manufacture of NCR (no carbon required) multiple copy paper; for the manufacture of wallpaper; and as extenders or fillers for plastic, paint, and putty. Fuller&apos;s earth mined near Ellenton, FL, was used for making lightweight aggregates for the construction of concrete barges during World War I1 (Calver, 1957). Still other uses of fuller&apos;s earth and its suitability for uses in new products are outlined by Haden, Jr., and Schwint (1967), Haden, Jr., (1972), and Haas (1970). One special use of fuller&apos;s earth is as a carrier of platinum catalysts that are made in the United Kingdom from sepiolite clays mined in Spain. Other uses of sepiolite fuller&apos;s earth (Chambers, 1959) are similar to those of the palygorskite (attapulgite) type mined in the United States.

The Morenci/Metcalf porphyry copper mining operation, located in southeastern Arizona, currently processes approximately 100,000 tons of ore per day and has copper ore reserves estimated to be in excess of one billion tons. Functional groups within the Geology Depart¬ment (currently staffed with six professional and two support personnel) include mine geology, project geology, and hydrogeology. The primary task of mine geologists is daily preblast bench face mapping with grade and mill amenability estimates. Auxiliary duties include detailed in-pit metal distribution evaluation, mineragraphic work and flux quarry geology. Project geologists conduct explora¬tion and preliminary development projects both within and outside the Morenci district and provide support to ore reserve block modeling and geotechnical work performed by the Morenci mine engineering group. Hydrogeologists handle exploration for and development of groundwater&apos; resources and groundwater flow modeling, mine dump leach solution penetration and recovery evaluation, and tailing dam water reclamation.

The commercial development of the Liwell Screen is a result of a thorough search for a non-blinding and highly efficient screening device capable of handling even the most difficult-to- screen feed materials. A proprietary development of Hein, Lehmann A.G. of Duesseldorf, West Germany, the Liwell Screen utilizes a unique flexible deck motion for sizing a variety of sticky, high surface moisture feed materials including raw coal and lignite at separations ranging from 3/4-inches (19mm) down to 10 mesh (1.5 mm).

The 70th Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Section of SME and the 58th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held April 22-24, 1997, in Duluth, MN. About 450 attended both. The Fifth Annual Trade Expo, held during the meeting, was attended by a record 80 exhibitors. An SME short course on materials handling preceded the meeting. Iron-mining and the steel industries highlighted the meetings. Specific topics in the keynote addresses and technical sessions primarily concerned iron mining, iron- ore processing, product (taconite pellet) transportation and the steel market. Although the iron mining industry held center stage, several papers outside of iron mining were also presented. Iron mining in Minnesota contributes $1 billion to Minnesota&apos;s economy. According to the Iron Mining Association of Minnesota, more than 20,000 state jobs rely on the industry. Minnesota&apos;s iron mining industry came through tough times in the early 1980s, mostly because of worldwide competition. However, the industry has shown significant improvement in the last 15 years. A large share of the steel industry&apos;s competitiveness in the late 1990s is due to cost and quality improvements in the taconite mines. The taconite industry has become more productive, largely through the application of new technology. Since the early 1980s, Minnesota&apos;s taconite mines have nearly doubled the number of tons per worker-hour. Most of the taconite reserves in the United States are located in Minnesota&apos;s Mesabi, Vermilion and Cuyuna iron ranges. The Mesabi range alone contains an estimated 24.
