The four unit Cholla coal fired power station at Joseph City, Arizona, consumes coal from the McKinley mine located in western New Mexico. Since coals may contain relatively high uranium or thorium concentrations and may release quantities of detrimental progeny of these elements to the environs, there is concern that releases may pose an adverse environmental impact or even a health hazard to the workers. Thus, an effort was made to quantify the radionuclide content of the coal and compare the results with radionuclide concentrations already present in the vicinity of the plant. Additionally an attempt was made to assess any potential for significant enhancement of the levels of radioactivity in the environment or to plant personnel. Background gamma radiation measurements at and near the plant ranged from 8 to 12 [µ]R/hr (70 to 105 mR/yr) with a few localized anomolies measuring to 18 [u]R/hr (160 mR/yr). Levels on top of the coal storage piles decreased to ~ 6.5 [u]R/hr (60 mR/yr). Apparently the direct radiation emitted from the coal is less than the background levels in the vicinity of the plant. Measurements performed on top of several coal seams at the mine confirmed low radiation levels emanating from coal, but readings more than doubled when the overburden was monitored. Laboratory gamma spectrometry confirmed the lower amounts of natural radioactivity in the coal when compared against soil and water samples obtained in the vicinity of the plant and the overburden at the mine. In an effort to see if there is biological enhancement, animal feces was sampled. The radiation variations were found to be influenced primarily by naturally occurring potassium-40 which varied from ~ 1 to 18 pCi/gm rather than fluctuations in the uranium and thorium series. The potassium-40 concentrated in the ash were similar to the concentrations in the environs around the disposal ponds while Radium-226 concentrated in the fly ash was ~ 3 times that found in the immediate surroundings. Radon-222 gas concentrations in buildings at or near the plant ranged from 0.5 to 1.8 pCi/l and were generally lower than indoor concentrations measured in the Phoenix area. The burning of coal at the Cholla station does not appear to increase ambient levels of radioactivity found in the surrounding environs or to the workers. However, the use of byproduct fly ash for construction purposes may need to be examined.

"With decades of development and exploitation of coal resources, the first batch of coal-based cities in China are faced with the challenge of economic shrinkage and environment deterioration due to the rapid resource exhaustion and single industrial structure. Nowadays, as a policy instrument for sustainable development, a nationwide circular economy mode has been implemented during the design and planning of new coal mines to address the challenges arising from economic depression, energy shortage and environmental pollution. It should be mentioned that several national coal bases and most of constructing and planning coal mines are located in the underdeveloped areas in the Midwest of China which means that the distance between supply source for energy resources and the demand market is significantly increased. Moreover, the eco-environment vulnerability in these rural areas should be taken into serious consideration. Therefore, after comparison and analysis with several successful coals based and diversified circular industry chains, this paper presents a case study on the circular economy park (CEP) in the northwest of Shanxi Province. Through discussion and evaluation of ‘1+3’ mode in the CEP, this paper aims to enhance the understanding of coal mine sustainable development and shed light on the relationship between resources exploitation and local economic development.1. Introduction Earth's fossil energy resources are crucial to both economic prosperity and human well-being. Taking coal mining and consumption as an example, coal has been widely used to generate electricity since the 1880s, and more than 40% of the electricity globally is provided by coal nowadays. However, as one of the largest worldwide anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide releases (39% of global CO2 emissions), the extensive excavation and utilization of coal have brought a series of side effects to both natural environment and human health (Wikipedia 2017). As the largest coal producer and consumer in the world, China is leading the list over the past decade (as shown in Figure 1) (BP 2016). The excavation and utilization of coal resources have made a crucial impact and irreplaceable contributions to China’s industrial development and economic prosperity (Long and Zhang 2009). However, most of the air pollution in China are also attributed to the simplified and extensive exploitation of coal resources, e.g., 90% of SO2, 67% of NO, 70% of smoke ashes, and 70% of CO2 in 2016. In recent years, most of North China and the developed coastal areas were wreathed by smog due largely to the oversimplified extensive utilization of coal, suggesting that the development patterns of coal utilization need to be reshaped so that both the biosphere and humanity could thrive equally."

Philippines is a country that is richly endowed in mineral wealth. In 1988, Climax Arimco Mining Corp. (CAMC) geologists found the Dinkidi porphyry gold-copper deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province. It is the most significant mineral discovery in that country in recent times. To date, the company has defined indicated resources of 124 Mt (136 million st) of 1-g/t (0.029-oz/st) gold and 0.4% copper. This includes a high-grade core of 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) of 6-g/t (0.175-oz/st) gold equivalent. Total contained metal is 124.4 t (4 million oz) of gold and 499 kt (1.1 billion lb) of copper. Dinkidi's discovery resulted from initial geologic reconnaissance and recognition of the intrusive complex that is exposed at surface and anomalous in its topographic expression. This was followed by systematic exploration. This includes extensive gradient array induced polarization (IP), ground magnetics, geochemical sampling and diamond drilling. This later defined a further 16 satellite porphyry targets in the Didipio region. Climax was been granted a Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement contract with the Philippine government. It allows 100% foreign ownership of mining projects. After four years of negotiations, Climax was the first company to have such an application granted. Some 120 applications from numerous international mining companies are waiting for approval following implementation of new Philippine Mining Act of 1995. Exploration history Didipio is located 200 km (125 miles) north of Manila at an elevation of about 700 m (2,300 ft) in the remote Sierra Madre mountains. This region remains mostly unexplored. The property is accessed by 25 km (15 miles) of logging track from the town of Cabarroguis, Quirino. The area experiences an average rainfall of about 3,000 mm (118 in.) a year. Most of it falls during the July-to-November typhoon season. Didipio was first recognized as a gold province in the 1970s when native Ifugao and Ilongot hunters discovered alluvial gold in the region. The region had been prospected over the years by local companies. They were mostly prospecting for alluvial gold. However, in 1988, Climax Mining geologists identified the potential of an obscure razorback ridge protruding from the alluvial valley floor. This ridge, later named Dinkidi by Climax, was the site of several small- scale tunnels. Locals had mined narrow quartz stockwork veining and sluiced soft argillic alteration zones, using irrigation canals and sluice boxes to catch free gold.

History The breaking and shaping of rock was one of man's earliest occupations. In the Paleolithic Age long before the dawn of history, arrow¬smiths and the makers of stone axes, hammers, knives, scrapers, spears, and borers were highly respected members of society. In early historical times stones for building blocks, roads, and city walls were shaped by slaves and convicts, who also did most of the mining. However, great artists erected beautiful stone sculptures, while gifted architects planned imposing temples and monuments. Until well into the 19th century nearly all rock was broken laboriously by hand. The small rock required by John MacAdam for his macadamized roads in England in the 1820s was produced by women and boys seated alongside the roadside with hand hammers and legs wrapped with rags. Eli Whitney Blake, a nephew of the Eli Whitney who invented the cotton gin, developed the first successful jaw crusher before 1870. The gyratory conical crusher soon followed. Comparative tests established its large capacity advantage over the jaw crusher, as well as its greater cost for a given feed size. Both types have been in use for more than 100 years. Crushing rolls appeared before 1900. Thomas A. Edison made very large diameter rolls which were excessively long; they failed because of shaft deflection. Various types of disk crushers and edge runner rolls appeared about this time. The older methods of reducing rock were adaptations of other processes. The stamp battery of dropping weights effected crushing by simulating heavy hammer blows; the much earlier arrastre, in which heavy stones were dragged in a circular path over the ore by animal power, came from the prehistoric method of grinding grain between two rubbing stones, while the jaw crusher was adapted from simple squeezing devices. But the tumbling grinding mill was not just an adaptation; it was an invention, because it required thinking on a somewhat higher order-there was no prototype. Its nearest antecedents were probably the small closed tumbling drums used in England more than a century ago for cleaning and polishing small iron castings. The date of the first tumbling mill actually used to grind rock is unknown, but it was later than the American Civil War (1861¬1865). It was almost certainly a closed or batch mill in which rock was placed and rotated until it reached the desired particle size. It could have been operated either wet or dry. The first published refer¬ence to such a batch mill was one introduced by Alsing in England (1870) for the grinding of calcined flints for pottery work.21 There are several rather indefinite reports of grinding mills in the early 1890s, including an overflow ball mill in the Helena and Livingstone reduction plant in Montana which may have been the first of its kind. 11 Many of the first mills, which were called tube mills, used hard rock both as grinding media and as mill lining. The rock used was preferably stone from the Normandy and Danish beaches, when it could be imported. This remarkable siliceous stone was already widely used for grist mills throughout America, and its resistance to wear was greatly respected. The decade of the 1890s saw the development of tumbling mills with continuous feed and discharge and their extension into different industrial uses. By 1895 some experience had been accumulated. Iron grinding balls were being tested and the proper speed of rotation was being determined. The Clark Patent tube mill was featured in an E. P. Allis bulletin of 1890, which may have been the first published description of a tube mill. More than 1,000 Gates tube mills had been built by Allis-Chalmers before 1913. Many of these were used in gold mining, espe¬cially in South Africa. The 5 x 22-ft size was particularly favored for grinding portland cement; the use of tumbling mills in the manufac¬ture of cement began about 1900. A great deal of attention was paid to the mill lining. Metal was then relatively expensive, and the general approach was to trap some of the rock grinding media into mill lining pockets. This rock would then absorb the wear and protect the metal lining. In the first ten years of the 20th century there were several different types of pocketed liners, with different manufacturers advancing the superior claims of their patented arrangements. The Osborne liner, developed in South Africa, was probably the most successful. 21 Another item which attracted much attention was size classifica¬tion within the mill and in ancillary equipment attached to the mill and rotating with it. The Krupp type, with interior screens protected inside the mill lining, was developed quite early in Germany, possibly before 1890. The Dorr reciprocating rake classifier (1907) had not yet been invented, and many strange and impractical screening and classifying devices were proposed. In these unsatisfactory machines the two separate processes of size reduction and classification were combined into one operation. It was many years before recognition came that a machine is most efficient when it is designed for one specific purpose. There was much industrial wastage before the opera¬tions of grinding and classification were finally separated. After 1900 the grinding of portland cement raw material and of cement clinker required large numbers of tumbling mills. Most of the raw material was then ground dry. This was also the heyday of gold mining. The old stamp mills that were used in great numbers for grinding gold ore did not grind sufficiently fine to liberate all of the gold, and the new tube mills were installed following the stamps. After 1910 larger diameter tum¬bling mills with larger grinding media were developed. These could receive the finely crushed ore directly, and the inefficient stamp batter¬ies were gradually eliminated. The Rand in South Africa was the greatest gold producer, treating immense quantities of rather low-grade but consistently free milling gold ore. The first tumbling mills, or tube mills, went into operation there in 1904. They were so successful that within a few years no new stamp batteries were installed in the district, even though old ones continued to pound away until after 1950.3 The early tube mills on the Rand all employed Normandy or Danish pebbles, which had to be imported at considerable expense. Their reported wear was as low as 4 lb per ton ground. 4 Many of the mills were lined with the same tough Danish stone cemented into place, while others used the pocketed steel Osborne liner. It was in 1907 on the Rand that an important test was made using hard native ore for grinding media in place of the expensive imported pebbles. 3 This ore, called banket, did not wear as well as the renowned Danish pebbles, but the cost per ton of grinding was definitely reduced. Many of the tube mills on the Rand were soon grinding with native ore. This was the beginning of the development now called autogenous grinding, in which the ore grinds itself. This is treated under a separate heading. See Subsection 3C, Chapter 4. Gold mining was important in America also, and its grinding history follows that of the Rand. Danish pebbles were replaced by native ore in Santa Gertrudis, Mexico, in 1913, 4 and in Consolidated Gold Fields, Nevada, in 1914. 5 Other properties followed suit. However, it gradually became apparent that the capacity of a given mill could be almost doubled if rock grinding media were re¬placed by cast iron or steel grinding balls. In order to increase plant grinding capacity many rock media mills were converted to iron grind¬ing media in the second decade of the present century. In some mills the motor size was doubled; other mills were cut in two and another motor was provided for the second half. Grinding mills began to assume a more modern appearance. Crushing rolls were formerly much used following crushing in jaw or gyratory crushers and preceding grinding in ball mills. How¬ever, the roll surfaces wore rapidly, and skilled maintenance was required to obtain even wear. Rod mills could take feed of the same crusher product size and reduce it finer. Techniques utilized to incorporate geological data in computer modeling and ore reserve estimation have undergone considerable evolution during the past fifteen years. Computer analysis and evaluation of two precious metal deposits are presented as examples of innovative computer techniques developed at Asarco. The first is a gold deposit occurring in a steeply dipping Pre-Cambrian greenstone sequence. The second is a manto-like manganiferous silver deposit occurring in a relatively flat sequence of Late-Paleozoic sediments. In both deposits, four sub-horizontal zones of geological influence are evaluated.

The Indian Head fine has been in existence since 1922. For over 56 years there have been North Dakota people mining coal at this same location. The area affected will fit inside a circle 5 km in diameter, and the coal is lignite. The seam thickness has varied from 2.4 m to 3.65m, and the overburden from 6 m to 30 m in depth. me Lignite coal which is being mined at the Indian Head Mine is from 15.8 x l0 6 to 16.7 x 10 6 J per kg; it has a moisture content of 33 to 38%; an ash content of 5 to 10%; and a sulfur content of from 0.5 to 0.7%. The moisture content and the fact that we crush the coal co a top size of 14 cm x 0, are two of the characteristics or the product which cause it to freeze and remain inside of the railroad cars on the slope sheets. The market for the coal initially was almost entirely local coal sales. That is, coal was sold to people in the area who used the lignite to heat their homes, stores, offices, schools, and churches. Back in the early 1920's, there were no stoker-fed boilers, or pulverized fuel boilers, as we have in today?s marketplace. Basically, all of the coal was sold as lump coal, pieces about 30 to 35 cm square, to be used in furnaces: and nut coal with a top size of about 7.5 cm to 10 cm to be used in the old kitchen cookstove. All of the coal fines, less than 5 cm, were screened out and layed onto a pile. There was no market for the smaller sizes of the lignite coal. It has been our experience that when the coal is in lumps or chunks larger than 7.5 cm to 10 cm, there is a very slight possibility of freezing. That is the chunks themselves freeze, but by their nature, they do not cling to one another or form large masses of frozen material which are difficult to remove from the slope sheers of the railroad cars.

There are certain data handling techniques used by statisticans that can help one to calculate the size of an orebody and to develop some of the relationships between size, cutoff grade, average grade, mining cost, and profit. Knowing the relationships amongst these factors can help determine the most desirable operating conditions. A statistical technique that we will use is data grouping. This allows us to work with relatively few groups instead of many samples, If we were able to segregate the ore in an orebody into grade groups, add the amounts in each group, and plot the sums as a curve, we would get something like Figure 1. A smooth curve develops when the grade classes are small enough, otherwise a "stair step? histogram results. The area under the curve, being the sum of the tonnages in all of the grade classes, is proportional to the total number of tons in the orebody. If we take the data of a distribution such as Figure 1 and add the tonnages above a specific grade we have in effect a cutoff grade

Diesel powered underground mining equipment is presently the most productive, safest and efficient equipment used in underground mining operations. The widespread application of this equipment to underground mining is restricted, however, largely because of the difficulty of controlling the diesel engine exhaust emissions. This paper briefly examines control devices currently available for underground application, and also discusses the theory and mechanics of controlling diesel missions with particulate traps and filters.

In the paper presented by F.W. Brackebusch on the "Basics of paste backfill systems," paste fill was presented as a backfill process that offers many advantages over other alternatives such as hydraulic fill and rock fill. It was observed, however, that the mechanics of paste-fill transportation in pipelines is not fully understood and that the success of its implementation in practice depends on the precise control of the proportions of fines, aggregates and water in the mixture. The author emphasized the necessity for laboratory and full-scale testing to determine the suitability of a material to be used as paste fill. Although experimental testing is definitely an important operation in the design of a reliable paste fill, advances in the understanding of the fundamental laws that govern paste flow in pipelines are equally relevant. Ideally, the results of such efforts would provide predictive models for the rheology of the paste and the corresponding pumping-energy requirements. In an attempt to achieve this objective, an ongoing research program has been active at McGill University's Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering. Preliminary results showed that the underlying mechanics of paste-fill flow in pipelines may be described in terms of what is known as "plug flow," as depicted in Fig. 1. Although this flow mechanism has been known qualitatively for many years, few attempts managed to offer a comprehensive model (Gandhi, 1987; Duckworth, 1986). In our model, it is assumed that coarse aggregates present in the mixture form a porous core, which is filled with paste (fines and water) and is surrounded by an annular non-Newtonian (Bingham-plastic) lubrication layer, which enables the mixture to flow with pressure losses that are easily overcome by common positive-displacement pumps. In summary, our model predicts the thickness of the annular lubricating layer, which controls the magnitude of the pressure losses. This is done either by collecting data on the apparent viscosity of the Theologically-active fine fraction and using an analytical equation (Bouzaiene, 1994), or is done by measuring the void content of the coarse aggregates and deducing the thickness as a function of the fine- to coarse (weight or volume) fraction ratio in the mixture for a given pipe diameter and solids concentration. Our model predictions showed good agreement with data from Duckworth et al. (1986), as shown in Fig. 2.? At the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral investigation of about 85,470 acres of the Diablo Mountain Wilderness Study Area, to determine mineral resources and mineral resource potential. The study area is in Lake County Oregon, about 45 miles northwest of Lakeview. Fieldwork was conducted in 1986, 1988, and 1989. Geologically, the study area lies on the northwest edge of the Basin and Range physiographic province, a region of fault block-formed mountains and basins characterized by interior drainage. Consolidated rocks are mostly Tertiary basalt and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks. Low-lying areas are covered by Quaternary alluvial-fan, sand-dune, playa, lacustrine, and landslide deposits. The principal structural features are normal faults that have large vertical offsets; these faults are typically concentrated at the margins of large horst and graben. The 34,310-acre "additional," or western part of the area was mainly studied in 1988 and borders the east shore of saline Summer Lake. In this portion of the study area there is potential for undiscovered resources of soda ash, boron compounds, and sodium sulfate as well as by-products, which include magnesium compounds, salts, potash, bromine, lithium, and tungsten associated with brines. No energy or mineral resources were identified in the study area, but brines within lake and playa sediments contain concentrations of chemical components suitable for the production of soda ash, boron compounds, and sodium sulfate. Possible by-products include potash, salts, bromine, lithium, magnesium compounds, and tungsten. Limestone from the study area could be used in the recovery process of brine components or agricultural uses. The study area includes thermal springs and lies within 2 miles of the Summer Lake Known Geothermal Resource Area. Local production of geothermal power by the binary process may be economically feasible. Soda ash, soda ash products, and boric acid are widely used in fluxing metals, and have important applications and markets in the aluminum industry in the northwest and the developing Chinese counterpart. Evaporite commodities are essential to many "backbone" industries, and to many new applications and advanced materials. Markets for brine mineral products appear to be undergoing steady and strong growth, especially in the Pacific Northwest and in Pacific Rim countries. Soda ash produced near the study area would be 55 percent closer by rail to marine export at Portland, Oregon, than trona deposits of the Green River District (Wyoming). Soda ash and a daughter product, caustic soda, and sodium borohydride will receive increased application in the bleaching of paper pulp for environmental reasons. Caustic soda, used in many industrial processes, is more environmentally friendly when derived from soda ash than when produced from sodium chloride salt, because of the absence of a chlorine by-product. Producing soda ash from brines, a type of in situ" mining, can be done with minimal environmental degradation, and mining natural soda ash is environmentally as well as economically preferable to synthetic soda ash production.

When operations begin early next year at the $100-million Port Kembla coal loading facility in New South Wales, Australia, a sophisticated computer system, directed by two of Hewlett-Packard's HP1000 mini-computers, will perform a number of functions ranging from monitoring and reporting arrivals and departures to maintaining a library of events for up to one year. The three-processor HP1000 system configuration, valued at $215,000, is one of the largest single orders, in terms of dollar value, ever submitted in Australia for Hewlett-Packard's line of engineering and manufacturing minicomputers. The processors will be linked in a fully "backed-up'' configuration using Hewlett-Packard's fourth generation distributed networking system, DS/1000-IV, making the system one of the most sophisticated in Australia. Interfaced to a number of weightometers and programmable logic controllers (PLCs), the computers will be the heart of a coal inventory system for the facility which, in its first phase, will be capable of handling more than 13.5 Mt/a of coal. The computers will report on all plant functions, including conveyor belt and water spray operations. Specifically, the system will: • Monitor and report all coal movements related to road and rail deliveries, dispatches from ship loaders, and interstockpile transfers. •Maintain a ''running log" of all events pertaining to overall plant operations, such as conveyor starts and stops and anti-pollution spray activation. • Accept and maintain plant data entered manually or acquired automatically from various remote locations via either visual display units (VDUs) or PLCs. • Maintain complete historical records of all transactions and related plant events for up to one year. • Provide a facility for stockpile management, modeling-type programs, and training or other simulation activity. The facility was designed with the following characteristics in mind, based on an analysis of requirements for an automated coal loading operation that would optimize productivity and be flexible to change and grow with facility needs and changing technology: • Continuous Operations-Due to the need for continuous plant logging and control, the overall facility will be capable of uninterrupted, 24¬hour operation. • Handling Current and Projected Workloads-The facility will be capable of not only handling current workloads, but also any additional workloads required during future coal loading operations. • Expansion-The facility will be capable of expansion, for a minimum cost, at any time with minimum disruption in operations. • Single Source of Supply and Maintenance-The facility will be supplied and maintained by one supplier, through hardware and software maintenance support contracts. System Configuration Two HP1000 minicomputers, each with 500K bytes of main memory, will be front-ended by a pre-processor with 256K bytes of main memory. These three systems, active, backup, and front-end, will be interconnected into a triangular array, as shown in the accompanying diagram. Under normal conditions, the front-end will transmit plant status data to one of the main systems, whose primary function will be to monitor coal flow and maintain a relevant dialogue with operators. The front-end, therefore, handles all communication with the plant PLCs, effectively removing this overhead from the current plant monitor (either of the two main systems). The front-end pre-processes and post-processes all information flowing from the plant monitor to the PLCs and vice versa, thus effectively handling all communication between the two units. A second main system will handle reporting, administrative, and modeling functions, and will also be capable of performing both front-end and monitoring operations. Linking all

Accountants use them as do managers, business men, lawyers, doctors and salesmen. What these users seldom realize, is how powerful a mathematical tool a spreadsheet is. Among their other capabilities, spreadsheets can do a finite element analysis. That is why they are useful for accounting. That is also why they are more useful to engineers in the mineral industry. Spreadsheets are ideally suited for the engineering problems in the mineral industry. We have used then for solving problems in: a) mine ventilation; b) circuit design and optimization of dense media, flotation and sizing; c) comminution circuit design; d) shaking tables; e) Humphrey spirals; f) sluice ways and channel flow; g) lock particle and liberation problems; h) tunnel and shaft stress problems; i) cascadograph simulation; j) complex heat transfer problems; k) flow in porous media; and sheet flotation (Figure 1). Mineral industry problems presented on or with a spreadsheet are an excellent teaching instrument, problem statement and solution tools and sales devices. Spreadsheets answer easily, quickly and reliably many mineral industry engineering problems. What makes spreadsheets so useful to the mineral industry. The short answer is: they are easy to use; mineral industry problems fit the spreadsheet format. Those reasons are part of the answer. The real answer lies with the structure of the spreadsheet itself. Essentially, a spreadsheet is a "finite element analysis" form of computer software. Many mineral industry problems are readily solved by finite element analysis techniques. While some in the mineral industry may think they have never heard of finite element analysis, most use it weekly if not daily. Any profit and loss statement is essentially a finite element instrument. In fact, any array of numbers where one number is related to another may be construed as a finite element analysis product. Finite element analysis is a common daily activity. To get an appreciation of a finite element analysis, think of a monthly sales forecast for the next year. For each product and for each month, there exists a dollar figure for the forecasted amount of sales. In the forecast statement, for a given product in a given month, there is a "box" where the forecasted figure is presented. The forecast figure in that box was arrived at through some type of formula. The formula probably required some information from other neighboring boxes in the master forecast statement. Voila, one has a finite element analysis. Today the analysis would be done in a spreadsheet. A typical mineral industry problem is ventilation in an underground mine. Think of a rectangular room and pillar mining operation. Each room has air entering at a given pressure and velocity and air leaving at another pressure and velocity. During steady state, the air entering and leaving the room is determined by conditions in the adjacent rooms. One can readily model the room and pillar mine layout in a spreadsheet, and then find the flow in and out of each room at steady state. Change the flow by moving a brattice cloth or blocking off a path way and one gets a new air flow profile. Change the numbers on the spreadsheet that reflect

The geology of the Gulf Coast Salt domes has been extensively studied by Kupfer (1,2,3,4,5), Atwater (6,7), Balk (81, Hawkins (9), and Wharton (10). dominant geological feature of Southern Louisiana is the Gulf Coast Geosyncline. The axis of this geosyncline corresponds with the present day coastline of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. This geosyncline has been continually subsiding since Cretaceous times and receiving large deltaic accumulations of sediments from Central North America. These accumulations progressively thicken toward the South. In the vicinity of the Coast, these sediments are reported to be about 40,000 feet thick. Another dominant feature of the region is the large number of salt domes scattered along the Gulf Coast (fig. 1). Typically, these domes are roughly cylindrical in shape, 1 to 5 miles in diameter, and extend to more than 20,000 feet in depth. It is hypothesized that these domes are derived from the thick Louann salt formation lying below the deltaic sediments. Due to its low specific gravity and buoyancy, the salt layer protruded upwards plastically and pierced the overlying strata. As a result of this upward flow, the adjacent strata are locally lifted upwards, creating excellent traps for petroleum accumulation.

Chemisorbed oleate films on the surfaces of fluorite, barite, and calcite were studied by means of infrared spectrophotometry. Evidence is presented which indicates the mineral anions, i.e., fluoride, sulfate, and carbonate, are displaced from the mineral surfaces as a result of the adsorption from aqueous solutions. Also, chemisorption reactions between oleic acid and fluorite or calcite occurred spontaneously in the absence of water. Carbon dioxide was identified as a reaction product when dry calcite was contacted with oleic acid. There was no evidence of reaction between oleic acid and barite in the absence of water.

An underground storage field is a gas field where man, not nature, has put all or most of the gas. All but one of those in use today are in the pore spaces or "porosity" of sedimentary rocks, the most common being sandstone. The one exception, near Newcastle, England, is a gas storage in a cavern dissolved from rock salt. The tens of millions of barrels of LPG (liguified petroleum gas) now stored in salt caverns mined in shale is liquid storage, not gas storage, and in this paper I recognize the presence of these installations but do not include them in the gas storage category, Since, with the English exception, gas storages are gas fields, they can all be sorted into the categories used to describe gas fields, 95% of them once gas fields anyway, but some of the remaining 5% are the ones having the greatest effects on underground waters.

With Utah Power & Light Mining Division's commitment to operate the safest and most productive mines possible, a decision was made to purchase and install mine-wide monitoring systems for use in the mines. After review of several different systems the Conspec Senturion 200 system was chosen. Three separate systems were ordered to fulfill the monitoring requirements of the six mines in operation: one system for the Deer Creek Mine one for the Wilberg/Cottonwood complex, and one for the Deseret, Beehive and Little Dove complex.

The quest for ore in an open pit is fundamentally an earth moving proposition. This thesis is vividly underscored by the rapidly increasing volume of waste to be removed in newer mines, where in some instances waste to ore ratios have reached as high as 20 to 1. Continuing depletion of high grade reserves, greater demand for raw materials, coupled with ever climbing labor costs, have made the problem still more pronounced and the need for more effective means of earth moving in an open pit even more acute. A conservative approach to the problem has been to upgrade the sizes of conventional earth moving equipment such as shovels and trucks. In many open pits, particularly in the C.S., this has been responsible for the generally down- ward trend of earth moving costs. None the less, the investment costs of these machines are high, and their gigantic engines are seldom fully utilized. Moreover, a large number of operators are required and maintenance remains relatively high. Unfortunately most people have felt that no other viable alternative was in sight within today's technological capabilities.

The issue of regulating non-asbestiform varieties of the amphiboles actinolite, tremo1ite, and anthophyllite to the same degree as asbestos has been studied in detail by the National Stone Association. The ramifications of such a regulation, and the over simplistic regulatory definition of a fiber, are enormous not only for the aggregate industry and its users, but also for the nation. Evaluation of the health, geological, mineralogical, technical, economic and legal issues do not support an "asbestos-like" regulation of non-asbestiform minerals. The adverse consequences of regulating non-asbestiform varieties of actinolite, tremolite and anthophyllite like asbestos would be magnified many times if a similar standard for generic mineral fibers were promulgated.

A practical application of recent design concepts makes it possible to design a column cell to fit a specific set of conditions. The design and operating parameters Of a column cell installation that replaced a conventional two stage copper flotation cleaning circuit at MAGMA COPPER COMPANY, SAN MANUEL, ARIZONA using these design concepts is described. A survey of other mineral processors using column cell technology was conducted. The results of this survey will also be discussed.
