Conditioning is any treatment of an ore with or without reagents which affect its floatability. While it can start in crushing or grinding circuits and continue into the flotation circuit, conditioning will refer here only to reagent treatment in an agitated tank designed for the purpose. Such treatment is often unnecessary with sulphide ores and collectors or with amines,* but it has long been recognized as essential with fatty acid collectors in the flotation of non-sulphide minerals, The requirements can be extremely variable, depending upon ore alteration, the presence or absence of slimes, and 1 the minerals to be separated. The study described here was concerned with the recovery of oxidized molybdenum minerals from an ore containing the element in both sulphide and oxidized form. Flotation of the iron minerals with which the oxidized molybdenum was associated was the basis for the process. Recovery and optimum concentrate grade without desliming depended upon a twenty to thirty minute conditioning of the pulp with flotation reagents at forty to fifty percent solids and at high turbulence. The objective in the study was the determination of design and operating criteria for conditioners in order to permit scaling-up of the results without repeating the entire study on a larger scale.

Environmental permitting is a critical component for joint-venture projects located in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This paper presents the basic CIS regulatory environmental requirements for permitting of a hypothetical mining source and emphasizes air permitting. Topics which will be covered include: the Expertiza process, air pollution quantification, data requirements, and air pollution modeling protocol. A comparison will be made between permitting requirements for air pollution sources in the United States and a CIS country, Kazakstan.

"Increasing attention to subway tunnel maintenance is being paid with the high speed development of urban rail transit system in China. A novel moving tunnel inspection equipment based on machine vision is developed in this paper. High resolution image acquisition system is proposed for tunnel crack and leakage inspection. The main components of this image acquisition system includes high speed CCD cameras, linear lights and high performance computer. To inspect the crack less than 0.3mm with a 3-5km/h speed in subway tunnel, we need to consider resolution and line rate of camera, pixels of cameras, range of inspection and illumination intensity of lights simultaneously. The optimization design is proposed to make the equipment more convenient for tunnel use. Entire tunnel situation can be detected and recorded in a single inspection process. This equipment has already been verified in Shanghai subway tunnel for defects inspection.1. INTRODUCTION In China, the quantity of subway tunnel has reached a large scale in recent years. Until 2014, there had been more than 2300km of subway tunnel in China which accounted for nearly three quarters of Chinese urban railway system (Zhang Chen,2015). In some metropolises like Beijing and Shanghai, most of the metro tunnels has already run over 20 years which within maintenance phase. This has brought about plenty of inspection work and maintenance work to guarantee the tunnel under the serviceability limit states. The increase of running mileage of subway tunnels in China has been displayed in Fig 1."

The theoretical model based on fluid mechanics, in conjunction with the laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurements, elucidate the size-classification mechanisms in an industrial hydrocyclone. The model has no adjustable parameters and involves solving the Navier-Stokes equations to predict the liquid-phase velocities. The spatial-concentration gradients were determined considering the particle phase in the Lagrangian frame and the classification curve was determined by balancing the forces acting on the particle. The force balance requires liquid velocities, which in turn depend on the local volumetric concentration of the particles. Hence, complete modeling work involves coupling both the concentration and liquid-phase velocity calculations until convergence is reached. Finally, the experimental and predicted classification curves were presented for 250-mm hydrocyclone operating at high-percent solids.

Mining of material without blasting and / or selectively becomes more and more important for high quality ROM-products. Surface Miners have been developed especially for this purpose. The cutting technology of these machines has been improved, so that harder material as well as wet and sticky materials can be cut with better results now. Especially the cutting drum design and more precise drum manufacturing process now allow production and equal tool wear over a long period. The better knowledge of rock parameters influencing the cuttability and cutting results allow higher production, less cutting tool wear and therefore reduced production costs.

"The Ejpovice tunnels in Czech Republic were built by EPBM in soft Clyashale, and in weathered profile with low soil overburden. The segmented liner at the cross-passage openings required support, which would not interfere with the EPBM clearance envelope during the scheduled pull back of the EPBM through both tunnel tubes. For that reason support frames or radial bolting could not be used. Steel rods inserted into the neighboring segments during the ring assembly, and later grouted were tested and realized as an innovative solution. The paper presents practical experience gained with the segmented liner support during cross-passages construction. INTRODUCTION An innovative solution using the grouted dowels was developed and realized for sixteen cross-passage openings of the twin Ejpovice Tunnels, whose construction was part of the railway track Rokycany – Plzen modernization. The following paper described practical experience gained with the innovative support of cross-passage openings, which was realized by short steel dowels grouted within the segments of the EPBM segmented liner. The paper is a continuation of the paper published in WTC 2015, which described the design aspects of the grouted dowels support, while the following paper concentrated on the production, and the performance of the dowel support observed during the breakout for the cross-passages openings. The connection by grouted dowels was patented by Metrostav, a.s. Company THE EJPOVICE TUNNELS CONSTRUCTION The Ejpovice tunnels construction started in 2013. The start of the high speed train operation through the tunnels was planned for 2018. The project was funded by the state government with the support of European Union funds of up to 70%.The tunnels were excavated with one EPBM (Earth Pressure Balanced Machine) with the external diameter of 9.89 m. The segmental liner inner diameter was 8.7 m, and thickness of 0.4 m. First, the South tunnel tube was excavated from the East portal, then the EPBM was pulled back through the South tunnel, and the excavation was started from the same portal for the North tube. After the South tube was freed from the EPBM excavation operations the cross-passage construction started. Due to the short time schedule, in the North tube the cross-passage construction started while the tunnel was still under construction. Therefore, the cross-passage construction was performed concurrently with the segments transportation, and with the EPBM pull-back through the tunnel. There were 8 cross-passages along the tunnels with a maximum distance of about 500 m, Fig.1."

Thickeners are simply large tanks, usually circular in shape, which are designed to allow settling of solids and to operate with continuous overflow of clear water and underflow of thick pulp. The dimensions of the thickener are usually such that dewatering of very fine pulps may be accomplished while still 1 overflowing clear water. Some thickeners such as the Genter, Hardinge and Hydrotator types combine thickening with filtering2 while others such as the Dorr type are pure thickenersl,2,3. A schematic diagram of the traction type Dorr thickener is shown in Figure 1. This type is appropriate for tanks over 15 m (50 ft) in diameter. This tank employs a rotating raking mechanism which moves the settled material toward the central discharge. For this and other thickeners, it is common to have a shallow conical tank bottom in order to conform to the geometry of the raking mechanism, and it is often desirable to elevate the tank for ease of access to the product. When the tank does not rest on the ground, the forces resisted by the cone are large, and thick plates must be employed. The fabrication of these tanks requires temporary supports in order to erect the cone. A flat-bottomed tank could also be used because the settled material would soon form a hardened conical surface. However, because of the presence of large bending forces, even larger plate thicknesses are required than for the conical bottom. Significant cost savings often can be realized by the use of a scalloped-bottomed tank such as the one partially shown in Figure 2. The particular scalloped bottom discussed in this paper (and shown in the Figure) employs radial beams forming the outline of the cone-shaped bottom. These beams are supported directly by columns. Cone segments are hung between adjacent beams. The exact geometry of these segments depends upon the cone angle and radius, the number of radial beams, and their inclination. The geometry is chosen to satisfy certain clearance restraints and to utilize the material as efficiently as possible. The Henderson mine is a large continuous panel caving operation in central Colorado. The orebody is roughly 760 m by 910 m and will be extracted from two production levels. Each level is divided into three north - south panels 244 m to 317 m wide. The general arrangement of a production level and its associated undercut drifts is shown in Figure 1. The production drifts (3.6 m by 3.7 m) are spaced 24 m apart center to center and have undercut drifts (3.4 m by 3.8 m) 17 m directly above them. The production drifts are interconnected with drawpoint crosscuts (4 m by 4.3 m) driven on 12 m centers. Drawpoint crosscuts receive substantial brow steel and concrete support prior to undercutting. The brow steel is a 15 cm by 46 cm wide flange beam with a 2.5 cm wear plate to box in the 'cave' side of the beam. The concrete is a minimum of 0.3 m thick and the batch design results in 27 500 kPa strength. The finished drawpoint opening is 3.7 m by 3.2 m with a choke area of 3.7 m by 2.4 m. (Figure la) Undercutting and bell formation is accomplished by blasting rings of 7.6 cm holes drilled from the undercut drifts. The rings have a burden of 2.0 m and six rings develop one complete bell.

The scope of this subject is a broad one. The demand for a metal with high refractory properties, great strength at elevated temperatures and high nuclear cross section, has put tungsten in the foreground as: the most promising metal to fill some of these requirements. Recently developed techniques have made it possible to roll large tungsten sheet and-the availability of fabricated tungsten is already upon us. More and more, the demand is for purer and still purer metals. Tungsten is no exception. As technology improves, we are learning more about the effect of foreign elements in minor amounts upon the chemical and physical properties of metals. As equipment and technology improve, specifications become more rigid, and reasonably so. Pure metals have revealed properties hitherto unknown in metals produced by former technology.

Hydrometallurgy has a well-known and established role in the production of manganese metal (1) and manganese compounds, including battery grade manganese dioxide (2). Also, several leaching processes have been developed and applied at various times for the recovery of manganese from low grade ores (3). Recently, interest in the hydrometallurgy of manganese has been stimulated by the problems presented in the processing of sea nodules (4). Fumes and dusts from the ferro-manganese furnaces also offer a potential field for the application of manganese leaching techniques (5). In treating low grade manganese ores a major requirement of the leaching process is that it should dissolve manganese from a mixture of manganese and iron oxides. The most selective reagent for this purpose is ammonium carbamate applied after preliminary pyrometallurgical reduction of the ore (6). Since soluble carbamate complexes of the postulated type (7) are formed by both manganous and ferrous, but by neither manganic nor ferric, ions, selectivety of manganese leaching is achieved by control of the reduction operation to yield, essentially MnO and Fe304? A potential improvement to this two step process would be to simultaneously reduce and selectively leach the manganese in one hydrometallurgical operation. This possibility has been experimentally studied and the results are described below. At nuclear facilities, three types of radioactive waste must be managed: (1) high-level liquid waste containing fission products from the chemical separation of irradiated uranium, (2) low-level condensates from the concentration of the high-level waste, and (3) dry solids such as obsolete process equipment, spent ion exchange resins, and irradiated metal scrap. The geological and environmental characteristics of a site are important considerations in planning the waste management program. At the Savannah River Plant, low-level liquids and dry solids are safely and economically placed in the soil where the geologic and hydrologic conditions are favorable. Within the general area where the waste originates, studies are made to locate seepage basins and burial grounds in the most favorable sites: (1) soils should have a high ion exchange capacity and moderate to low permeability, (2) the water table should be deep, and (3) burial sites should be relatively distant from the nearest flowing stream.

Leo-potpourri, was selected as the title to this paper for several reasons. First, it is a fascinating word--not looking like it sounds or sounding like it looks. It also allows for a great degree of flexibility in designing a presentation around it. Further, it has become popular to use this eco hyphen something pattern. We hear of eco-mania, eco-hysteria and the like. Lastly, in this era of intense environmental concern, two of the principle elements on which the integrity of our efforts must be equated are ecology and economics. Accordingly, the term "Eco-potpourris" allows me to roam at will through the great number of considerations that make up this environmental issue. Whereas only a few years ago the subject of environment and environmental control had low visibility with the public, today it competes as the focus of attention with the many other popular social issues of our time. The program content here at this meeting, for example, is liberally represented by papers dealing with one or more aspects of environmental concern. If one would look at the 1964 program, in contrast, I would expect that no more than possibly one or two papers covered this subject and even then that those papers dealt principally with the environmental aspect of occupational health. It is gratifying that the program at this meeting demonstrates a serious awareness to a broad spectrum of environmental concerns. It would be a mistake, of course, to believe that this clamor for a quality environment is a "flash in the pan" that will soon subside. The efficient and acceptable disposal of fine coal refuse (28MxO) is one of the highest priority problems facing the coal industry today. For many years the established system for the disposal of this fine refuse slurry has been to concentrate the solids in a static thickener and pump the resulting 20-40% solids underflow to lagoons or impoundments. Although this technique has served the coal industry well, increasing environmental concerns and refuse related disasters, such as Buffalo Creek, West Virginia and Aberfan, Wales, Great Britain have resulted in federal and state regulations which now control fine refuse disposal methods. As a consequence of these regulations, the capital costs of constructing, maintaining, and operating regulatory complying impoundments has become in many cases economically unattractive. Areas processing topologies similar to those coal preparation plants of the Appalachians are particularly burdened by these regulations and are consequently turning to alternatives for handling and disposal of their fine coal refuse. The basic requirements of impoundment alternatives as defined by environmental and plant demands are: (1) A relatively solids-free liquid (1000 ppm or less) to serve as plant make-up water in a "closed circuit" system, and (2) a sufficiently dewatered solids product which can be combined with the coarse refuse to form a compactable stable land-fill.

On July 7, 1971, noise regulations for underground coal mines were implemented under provisions set forth in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. These same regulations now also apply to coal mine surface facilities. In August 1971, in anticipation of these regulations, the Bureau of Mines, through the cooperation of the mine operators, conducted extensive noise surveys in three coal cleaning plants. The survey was conducted in an attempt to identify those occupations where exposures would exceed the proposed regulations.

Capital resource budgeting is the means by which managers of publicly held companies fulfill their fiduciary responsibility to maximize the wealth of stockholders. Managers maximize shareholder wealth by allocating investment capital to the most productive of competing alternative projects in a manner that maximizes the net present value of the firm's future cash flow. The techniques of cash flow analysis are the primary tools available for selecting a corporate portfolio of projects that meets or exceeds the rate of return expected by shareholders. The reliability of cash flow analysis hinges on the ability of managers to forecast the future values of individual components. The accuracy and reliability of forecasting determine the soundness of capital investment decisions and, ultimately, determine the value of the firm. The present paper will explore tools for forecasting the spot market price of a commodity, silver, to demonstrate the difficulty and uncertainty involved in forecasting the future. The commodity price is only one of a number of components of the cash flow equation. Each component has a unique and uncertain future and must be individually analyzed and forecast to arrive at a robust cash flow model.

"This paper takes an in-depth look at the $72 million design-build Norris Cut project, which includes the replacement of an existing 54-inch waste water sewer main to Fisher Island under the Norris Cut Channel. Tunneling through one of the country’s most unpredictable geologies created unique challenges in both the design and construction phases of the project. The paper presents the geotechnical and structural design considerations for the 100-foot deep secant piled TBM launch shaft in the highly permeable Fort Thompson formation limestone and sands. The structural design effort also included the design of the tremie slab, thrust wall and design of the largely unreinforced launch shaft to resist asymmetric loading from partial ground freezing. The retrieval shaft was designed as a deep soil mixed shaft and is thought to be the deepest soil-mixed shaft in Miami. From a construction perspective, this paper discusses the unique challenges of building two shafts with two different techniques and will compare some of the constructability aspects, costs and equipment schedule-considerations related to the use of two separate techniques. INTRODUCTION Nicholson Construction Company (NCC) was awarded a $72.1 million Design-Build contract to replace an existing force main from the Virginia Key Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant (CDWWTP) under the Norris Cut Channel to Fisher Island. The location of the project is shown in Figure 1. The project involves replacing an existing 54-inch diameter pre-stressed concrete sewer force main with a 60-inch diameter fiberglass force main. Arup USA, Inc. (Arup) is the lead designer for Nicholson on this design-build project. Arup is providing design services for the TBM launch and retrieval shafts, segmental tunnel lining, the fiberglass pipe, and the horizontal directional drill component. Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department currently owns and operates the existing 54-inch sanitary force main that transmits sewage collected from Miami Beach and Fisher Island to the CDWWTP for treatment and disposal. The existing force main was subject to a condition assessment in December 2011 which revealed structural deficiencies in the pre-stressed concrete pipeline."

An appropriate scale-up methodology is very useful for ball mill design and optimization of the grinding circuit. To date, the scale-up is based on the selection and breakage function method using lab mill data. However, a major drawback of that approach is that the charge motion in a lab mill is vastly different from that in a large industrial mill. Therefore, in the methodology proposed here, first the energy of individual collision in the mill is computed employing the discrete element method (DEM). Then the breakage of particles as a function of collision energy is studied in a separate experiment. Together, this information constitutes what is known as collision energy based population balance method. The appropriateness of this method is shown for 38-cm ball mill.
