A complex pyrite orebody located in the South of Portugal (MO INHO) was exploited in the past by cut and fill methods until a certain level. It was decided to design a new plant for non ferrous metal extraction and the rate of production and exploitation method was modified accordingly. So, a sub level stoping (SLS) method was en visaged for the exploitation of the deepest part of the orebody (under 265 m level). For the planning of this SLS method, it was decided to perform a geostatistical study of the orebody, on the basis of the available information, which consists mainly of channel samples assayed for Cu, S, Zn and Pb.

A number autonomous operations is in place in several, mainly in fenced areas, where safety is assured by locking off the entire area for other traffic. However autonomy can be brought much further if functional safety is assured and a real mixed traffic of autonomous and manually operated vehicles is possible. MobileTronics has created a modular software and control framework for autonomous machines. The paper covers application examples in which the deterministic object recognition in combination with probabilistic algorithms and sensors is used as a basis for functional safe certification of mixed traffic autonomy.

A new pillar strength formula is presented. It incorporates a function [IF] of size and shape that takes into account the size-shape interaction effect as well as the enhanced strength exhibited by wide pillars. Existing pillar formulas, lacking these capabilities, are not suitable for extrapolating small-specimen test results to mine-pillar sizes and shapes. Interpreting compressive strength test results as function of [Y] reveals wide-pillar behavior in much old test data. Model relationships are discussed, along with their scaling implications.

From October 1980 through August 1982, surveys were conducted on 19 longwall mining operations to obtain data relative to respirable dust levels associated with particular longwall operations and occupations, to make recommendations for enhancing dust control, and, where applicable, to evaluate the effectiveness of new technology implemented to control dust. The paper summarizes the data collected during these surveys and, where possible, draws conclusions and discusses actions that can be utilized to reduce exposures to respirable coal mine dust on longwall mining operations.

This paper summarizes the practical considerations of the various electrical separation methods used in mineral processing. The effective factors related to mineral characteristics and equipment attributes are described and analyzed with reference to conventional industrial applications of the electrical methods. Some new aspects of electrical methods application and their potential for mineral beneficiation, apart from the mineral systems that have been successfully beneficiated, are also presented. In addition, wet dielectric separation, which now appears to be promising, is briefly cited.

(XP) enclosures to enclose electrical ignition sources to prevent propagation of an internal methane-air explosion to a surrounding explosive atmosphere. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a lithium-ion battery thermal runaway test within a modified MSHA-approved XP enclosure to assess thermal runaway containment. Thermal runaway produced jet flames emanating from the cover joint at several locations and distorted the cover joint and bottom plate of the enclosure beyond allowable limits. The test demonstrates that XP enclosures may not provide adequate explosion protection against lithium-ion battery thermal runaway. This paper suggests some approaches to mitigate the hazard.

About 65% of the U.S. coal production (835 n tons was surface mined. A similar proportion of the Illinois basin's production (112 m tons) is also surface mined. The state of Illinois is the third largest producer of surface mined coal in the United States, after Wyoming and Kentucky. The Illinois coal basin encompasses Illinois, southwestern Indiana, and western Kentucky, as shown in Figure 1 (dotted lines). The estimated surface mineable coal resources in the basin amount to about 27 billion tons, and about 69 m. tons of coal is surface mined annually (Tab1e I).

This study is a continuation of previous work designed to further explore the mechanism of the bioleaching of sulfide concentrate at neutral pH by heterotrophic bacteria Bacillus megaterium QM B1551. The concentrate contained 13.2 percent nickel (Ni) and 0.2 percent cobalt (Co), which presented primarily as pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Contact and noncontact bioleaching experiments were conducted with finely ground ore at an initial pH of 6, resulting in 44.7 percent of Ni and 38.2 percent of Co leached in the contact-bioleaching treatment. Oxidation experiments of sulfur, thiosulfate (S2O32−) and ferrous ions (Fe2+) by cell membrane were performed to verify whether sulfur transferase, thiosulfate quinone reductase and enzyme cytochrome B558 on the surface of the bacteria could be expressed to oxidize the sulfide. The results show that thiosulfate quinone reductase and cytochrome B558 could be expressed to oxidize S2O32− and Fe2+ to SO42− and Fe3+, respectively.

The comminution laws The grindability of the ores or minerals is an important factor that could not be deduced from their mineralogical characteristics (Testut, 1958). Many theories have been proposed to determine the amount of work required in a comminution operation as a function of the nature of material, size and shape of the minerals before and after of comminution. The most important laws are proposed by Rittinger, Kick and Bond. According to Rittinger (1867), the work is directly proportional to the new surfaces produced during the comminution. Kick (1885) believes that the work needed to produce similar modification is proportional to the volume or mass of the material. Bond, during his 25 years of experience and research, reached to the conclusion that on the average the energy required for a known comminution is between the Rittinger's and Kick's laws (Bond, 1952). According to Bond's Third Theory, the work input is proportional to the new crack tip length produced during the particle breakage, and equals the work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed. The work input is given by the following equation: [111W = 1 Owi( FP FF(1)] where W is the The energy input to the mill, (kWh/st); F is the Feed size based on 80% passed, (µm); P is the Product size based on 80% passed, (µm); and W; is the Work Index, (kWh/st) Methods to determine the Bond Work Index Various methods have been proposed by Bond to determine the Work Index. There are some problems with the Standard Bond Grindability Test: •Requiring a special mill. •Requiring a relatively large amount of sample. •Being relatively time consuming and tedious. [ ] During the recent years, numerous attempts have been made to install faster and easier methods to determine the Work Index. A complete description of these methods is presented by Yap et al. (1982). Determining the Bond Work Index by a new size ball mill During the recent years, researchers at the University of Tehran determined the Bond Work Index, using the Anaconda simplified methods by its Denver 305- x 127-mm (12 x 5-in.) laboratory wet ball mill. The equation used to calculate the Work Index for the above mill containing 16.12 kg (35.5 lbs) of steel balls is as follow: [1 _ 1-1W;=0.54x [P [)(2)] In addition, an attempt has been made to determine the Bond Work Index similar to standard Bond ball mill procedure but by a different ball mill, smaller and in consequent portable and less laborious than the Bond ball mill. Method description Just as the standard Bond grindability test, this method is a locked-cycle dry grinding and screening process that is carried out until steady state condition is reached. Test equipment The test is conducted in a special ball mill, called the New Size Ball Mill (NSBM). The mill is scaled down with a coefficient of two-thirds from the standard Bond ball mill. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion project in Virginia includes parallel 1.5- mile (2.4 km) tunnels constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). The TBM launching and receiving shafts were excavated within the footprint of two reclaimed islands abutting the navigation channel for the Port of Virginia. The shaft excavations—a circular tri-cell shaft at South Island, and a circular-rectangular twin-cell shaft at North Island—were supported by slurry walls up to 190 feet (58 meters) below the island surfaces. This paper describes specic design considerations for these shafts, as well as construction and uality-oversight aspects of their excavation and construction.

A big issue in crushing and grinding operations in raw materials handling is high energy consumption and low breakage effectiveness. According to the Legendre [7], only 10% of energy input is directly consumed on the feed material breakage, while the remaining portion is dissipated in the form of heat and noise [8]. In the industry of limestone powder production, the grinding operations constitute integral part of technological circuits, and the energy consumption in operations of industrial comminution consume as high as 2% of world energy [14]. High-pressure grinding is the technology with proved energy benefits both in ore processing circuits and in limestone grinding. The promising results concerned mostly the achieved energy savings and good results of material breakage were achieved and demonstrated in numerous investigations [1,3,12]. However, it appears that a proper selection of operational parameters of the press devise, determination the feed material characteristics and adjustment of process course san be of a key-significance in improving an effectiveness the HPGR operation. Operational parameters of devices and process course should be verified towards the characteristics of the feed material, which mainly applies to the particle size and shape of the feed material and its moisture, and also mineralization in case of ores [2,4,9]. There are various investigations concerning an impact of the operational pressing force on comminution results which mostly refer to the determination of energy consumption and crushing ratio [5,6,10,13]. Investigations on the moisture content are less common, however their results suggest that, in general, the HPGR feed with higher moisture shows the tendency to higher comminution intensity, while the energy consumption increases together with increasing of feed material moisture. Investigations on olivine sand feed [11] showed that crushing ratio decreases for higher moisture, especially when the material is crushed at higher pressing force. HPGR devices, however, shouldn’t be regarded as a unique and perfect solution for comminution of each type of material. But they indeed may bring technological and economic benefits, comparing to conventional crushing and grinding machines, resulting in more favourable breakage of material particles and lower consumption of energy per unit mass of processed feed material.

"The Copper Mountain Mine is located in Princeton British Columbia, Canada and produces 80 – 90 million pounds of copper annually, as well as gold and silver by-products. The ore processing plant has a conventional SAG/ball mill circuit with inline pebble crushing, followed by flotation. At most plants, much time is spent evaluating and optimizing the comminution and flotation circuits. The cyclones are a key contributor to the effective operation of the plant: They define the circulating load in the comminution circuit and provide the classification that ensures liberated material is passed through to flotation. If the cyclones are not performing as they should, the results are often a combination of lost recovery, grade, capacity and reduced throughput in flotation. For such an impactful unit operation, cyclones have historically been under-instrumented. Consider as well that the cyclones are typically located at the highest elevation in a plant, and it becomes clear why they often underperform. Copper Mountain Mine recognized the critical role that cyclones filled in their plant and worked to optimize their operation through the implementation of a Portage Cyclone Detection (PCD) system to identify plugging and roping incidents, Portage Pumpbox Control (PPC) to manage the flow to the cyclones, and AwaRE to control the grinding circuit. As a result, cyclones overflow stability has increased, switching out a roped or plugged cyclone now happens within seconds rather than many minutes, and both the grinding and flotation circuits perform better. INTRODUCTION Cyclones are one of the most extensively used pieces of equipment within the mineral processing industry because of their simplistic operating and maintenance philosophies. The cyclones are commonly used as classifiers within the comminution circuit to control the grinding product particle size for satisfactory performance of downstream operations. The cyclones are a key contributor to the effective operation of the plant and have a significant impact on the mineral processing plant operations. If the cyclones are not performing as they should, the results are often a combination of lost recovery, grade, capacity and reduced throughput. Similarly, an inefficient cyclone operation may also lead to low or high recirculating loads that impact the efficiency of the comminution circuit. This highlights the importance to have proper stability in cyclone operation while implementing any plant-wide optimisation strategy."

The Jualin Gold Prospect is centered on Johnson Creek, approximately 40 air miles north-west of Juneau, Alaska. The property is on the southern end of the Kakuhan Range with Berners Bay immediately to the south and Lynn Canal to the west. The property is accessible directly by helicopter from Juneau or by float plane to the head of a 5.5 mile gravel road that begins on the north side of Berners Bay and terminates at the old workings of the Jualin Mine near the center of the property.

Elemental analysis of slurry streams using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) has long been employed. However, detector technology has limited the application of XRF devices. Using detector technology employed on NASA's Mars Pathfinder to analyze soil samples, Process Control, Inc. has developed an on-line analyzer to mount on a sampling system. The prototype XRF elemental analyzer was installed at Detroit Edison's Monroe Power Plant in January, 1998 and has been employed to monitor feedstock quality. A slurry system has been developed for flotation control. This paper describes the testing of the analyzer using the new, draft ISO standard for evaluating the performance of on-line analyzers (ISO/DIS 15239).

"The proposed Channel Tunnel is a critical component of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) Central Bayside System Improvements Project (CBSIP), which is a key element of a $6.9-billion sewer system improvement program to upgrade its aging and seismically vulnerable wastewater facilities. The tunnel will provide gravity conveyance and storage of combined sewage flows from the northeast sector of San Francisco, CA to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. The tunnel will be approximately 2.7 km (1.7 miles) long and 7.3 m (24 ft) in internal diameter. It will utilize a single-pass precast concrete segmental lining system. Tunneling challenges include excavating with pressurized face tunnel boring machine (TBM) technology through highly variable ground conditions including the Franciscan Complex (rock and mélange), clayey/silty sands, stiff to hard clay (Old Bay Clay) and mixed-face conditions. The project will also require several deep shafts that will be technically challenging. Project backgroundThe SFPUC is a department of the City and County of San Francisco, CA that provides municipal power, drinking water and wastewater services to San Francisco.San Francisco’s combined sewer system collects both wastewater and stormwater in the same sewers, which is then pumped, treated to stringent state standards and discharged into the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. The sewer system includes tunnels, large storage/transport boxes, 1,600 km (1,000 miles) of collection sewers, 28 pump stations and three wastewater treatment plants. After decades of service, much of the system is nearing the end of its useful life.The existing system is also vulnerable to seismic damage. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, damage to SFPUC wastewater infrastructure was extensive. This included the 3,415 m (11,200-ft) long, 1.7m (66-in.) diameter Channel Force Main, built in 1976, and a critical component of the conveyance system. The Channel Force Main carries 70 percent of the bayside dry weather sewage flow from the northern and central part of the city to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. It is antiquated, not pile-supported and not constructed to current seismic codes. There is also currently no conveyance redundancy for north/central bayside flows to the treatment plant. Figure 1 shows the SFPUC’s wastewater collection system, the existing Channel Force Main and the project location."

Modification of clays is necessary for the zearalenone (ZEN), as long-chain mycotoxins, removal. The organic-cations were usually used to modify the clay hydrophobicity to accommodate the large mycotoxin molecules. In this study, tri capryl methylammonium (TCMA) chloride and common corn oil were used in clay modification. Several characterization techniques such as XRD, FTIR, and TGA were used to identify the d-spacing changes after modification either by TCMA or corn oil. The results of applying the TCMA-corn oil-modified clays in ZEN removal indicated a noticeable improvement where more than 90% of ZEN could be removed in vitro at acidic and neutral pH values. The success of eliminating a high percentage of ZEN molecules is due to the expansion of intergallery spacing as a result of TCMA surfactant intercalation within the clayforming layers. The removal percentage does not depend only on pH but also on the amount of clay used. In addition, the ZEN removal in the presence of corn oil is better at acidic pH and small clay amount where the ZEN can be fully removed.

It is always a pleasure for me to address a group of mining engineers. I am doubly grateful when I am allotted sufficient time to describe the total Office of Coal Research program. My remarks are directed to our total program but I trust you will all understand my emphasis of the utilization aspect of our activities since that is my portion of the program. From its inception, the Office of Coal Research has sought out creative ideas for improving our national use of coal by developing new uses, improved mining procedures, lower costs, and appropriate studies with respect to the resource itself. Quite early in the game, our Economics and Marketing Division contracted for studies with respect to New England export market, Western coal, and similar items. Our Mining and Preparation Division has successfully developed a packaged coal-fired boiler and has partially developed a packaged fluid-bed type boiler as well. Our Mining and Preparation Division is working in such diverse fields as treatment of sewage with coal and the separation of coal into distinct-petrographic constituents so that all fractions of the coal can be put to the best possible use. We would like to be doing more work on improved mining methods, better preparation techniques, and any other mining improvement that will benefit the industry and our program. The synthetic fuel plants I will describe later will operate seven days per week, 24 hours per day. We would like the mine to operate on this same sort of cycle and are prepared to support research that will lead to this.

In recent years, a variety of new or substantially modified grinding machines have been offered to the mining industry with claims of improved performance relative to standard grinding machines especially rod and ball mills. The incentive for developing such new machines is high, because costs associated with grinding are a very substantial part of the total costs of processing run-of-mine ore, and gold ores are no exception in this regard. The incentive is also high because of the very low conversion of input energy to comminution energy in most tumbling mills. If the most energy-efficient means of mechanical size reduction is slow compression of single particles, then this energy amounts to only about 3% of that used in tumbling mills. It would seem, therefore, that there is a huge potential to do better. This paper examines three types of grinding machine for which claims of higher energy utilisation ( amongst other beneficial claims) have been made, namely the high pressure grinding rolls, the vibrating drum mill and various styles of stirred mill. It presents evidence concerning the claims, examines the range of particle size and particle size reduction over which benefits might reasonably be expected to accrue, discusses the major issues in contention and briefly describes the research the CSIRO Division of Minerals has in progress, both independently and collaboratively, the latter mainly with the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) via the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) and the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA). A technique is presented for the economic selection of a slurry pipeline with the aid of a computer. Mathematical models for the flows of homogeneous slurries are utilized. Only the pipeline and its prime movers are considered. Slurry flow properties are first obtained from rheology and/or pipeline data measurements. A rheological model is then selected for the slurry. It must be emphasized that the accuracy of the method is greatly affected by the accuracy of the slurry flow-property data. Approximate cost parameters may be selected from data for plain and lined pipes, centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, motors and engines. Cost data for the purchase, operation and maintenance of slurry pipelines are also described. A total cost equation for the ownership and operation of a slurry pipeline system is then established. The complexity of the equation is a function of the rheological model selected to describe the slurry. The equation is solved with the aid of a computer for several combinations of pipeline diameters and throughputs to yield minimum total annual cost for the system. A mean velocity is then computed to give the required throughput. The velocity is constrained by an upper and lower bound. A high velocity is undesirable from an energy consumption viewpoint and if pipeline wear is possible. On the other hand, the velocity must exceed the deposition velocity for a heterogeneous suspension or the critical velocity for a homogeneous suspension. There is no guarantee that the velocity developed by this method will lie within the constraints applied, nor that the constraints are even known. This is particularly true for heterogeneous slurries. An important feature of the method is the ease with which the variables can be adjusted to measure the sensitivity of the total cost to the variables. The purpose of the sensitivity analysis is to identify those critical variables that. if changed, can considerably affect the total cost. Mathematically, individual variables are changed and the effect of such a change on the annual total cost is computed. But from a designer's point of view, individual components in the system are changed to study their effect on the annual total cost. A change in one component of the system may involve a change in one or more variables. For example, the replacement of a steel pipe by a smooth-lined pipe will change the pipewall roughness and wall thickness as well as purchase, operating, and maintenance costs.

Many studies have been made of the microflotation of quartz (1,2,3,4,5,6) and alumina (3,5,6, 7,8) using various anionic and cationic hetero- polar hydrocarbon surfactants as collectors. A few studies have been made on these minerals using amphoteric hydrocarbon collectors ( 9,10, 11,12) and only a few studies have been made on the use of fluorocarbon surfactants as flotation collectors (13,14). The present investigation compares microflotation response of the two minerals in hydocarbon and fluorocarbon collector systems of the anionic, cationic and amphoteric types. An attempt is made to relate flotation response of the minerals to their electrokinetic behavior and the pKa values of the collectors.
