INTRODUCTION From the first historical records of the discovery of uranium as an element and the attempted classification of its minerals in the early 18th century-through its first uses in pigmentation and the coloring of glasses and ceramic glazes-until 1939 when it was discovered that the isotope U235, was fissionable, uranium oxide in the form of pitchblende ores and concentrates (produced mainly in Bohemia, Canada, and the former Belgian Congo) in recent times was the source of uranium compounds incidental as byproducts to the recovery of radium from this invariable associated source. In 1938 this byproduct production from pitchblende concentrates was about 471 st of U3O8, with over 90% from Canada and the Belgian Congo and only 25.85 st from carnotite ores in the United States.1 Under the impetus of the Atomic Energy Commission's (AEC now part of the Energy Research Development Administration) domestic and foreign production incentives and buying programs, and as an initial assurance of atomic armament capability of the United States and the Free World, the growth of the uranium mining and milling industry burgeoned from 1952 to 1962. After a short period of decline, in the second decade and in large commitments beyond, it has again extended its capacity to meet ever-increasing fuel demands of atomic power generation by the electric utilities industry. In 1961 the peak production in the United States alone was 17,758 st of U3O8. Peak aggregate domestic and foreign deliveries of 34,581 st of U3O8 to the AEC occurred in 1960.z Canada's maximum delivery of 13,506 st of U308 was made in 1959. These peak and continued productions in the Free World are largely from: the Mesozoic (Jurassic) and Tertiary (Eocene) sandstones in the United States; the quartz pebble conglomerates of Canada and the Witwatersrand; pegmatites, Jurassic limestones, and Precambrian complexes, with less but significant production; the phosphoria, where byproduct production is minor. This uranium production in the form of precipitated concentrates has come from the milling of ores from these sources, both directly and by retreatment of gold cyanidation tailings on the Witwatersrand. Milling of crude ore has followed these processes: conventional crushing and size preparation, ore drying when required, salt roasting for high vanadium ores and byproduct vanadium recovery, carbonate or acid-leaching processes, classification sand-dine separations or countercurrent decantation (CCD) circuits and complete liquid-solids separations, resin-in-pulp (RIP) or liquid-liquid (solvent) ion-ex- change extractions, clarification of pregnant liquors, precipitation, filtration and washing, sodium and vanadium removals, and drying or roasting and packaging of the high-grade, high-purity uranium concentrate commonly referred to as "yellowcake." Coupled with the hazards and control of dust generation incident to conventional crushing and milling operations, more stringent control of airborne respirable and ingestible radioactive particulates and the protection of personnel against definitive external radiation are inherent to uranium milling. Impoundment and control of tailings and other effluents of uranium milling are more restrictive than in conventional practice, be- cause long-term disposal and containment of the uranium series of radionuclides, whether in solution or in solid form, are requisite to uranium milling and are made manadatory under regulatory agencies of government. 2. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY OF URANIUM Early Uses and Byproduct Production of Uranium Uranium was discovered by Klaproth in 1789 but had little commercial importance until the discovery of uranium fission by Hahn and Strassman at the close of 1938. The well-known uranium ores of Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, the Congo, and the Colorado Plateau were early sources of radium. Minor quantities of uranium were used for small-scale technical and industrial applications, particularly in coloring glass and ceramics, but most of the uranium was discarded. The Colorado ores were also mined later, chiefly for vanadium. Impetus of Armament Capability and Fuel Demands for Atomic Power Following the discovery of atomic fission, uranium became critically important for military applications and, more recently, as a nuclear fuel. Prior to 1966 uranium was acquired in the United States almost solely for use in the weapons program of the AEC. By 1970 the AEC had procured approximately 325,000 st of U3O8 from domestic and foreign sources. Current and future marketability is primarily dependent upon commercial demand for reactor fuel. For some time a need had existed in the minerals processing field for a relatively efficient separator that would treat high tonnages of particles in the intermediate size range, i.e., those particles too large for froth flotation and too small for conventional gravity-type separa¬tors. Among those devices developed to meet this need are the centrifu¬gal specific gravity separators. These devices employ centrifugal acceleration to assist gravitational acceleration in separating light¬density minerals from heavy-density minerals. In the category of centrifugal specific gravity separators are the heavy-media centrifugal separator and the water-only cyclone. The two major centrifugal heavy-media separators, i.e., the heavy-media cyclone and the DynaWhirlpool, as well as the water-only cyclone, are discussed in terms of: design features, operating variables, operat¬ing data, and flowsheet design criteria. Examples of plant applications are given in the field of coal processing as well as the processing of other minerals such as iron ores, potash, and tin. Finally, the subject of the staging of centrifugal separators and their use in combination with other separators is discussed. PRINCIPLES For coarse sizes of minerals, efficient specific gravity separations have been possible for many years with open-bath vessels using the natural settling velocity or buoyancy of the particles. These bath ves¬sels process ore by utilizing micron-size solid particles suspended in the slurry fed to the separator. The inclusion of these particles in the slurry increases the effective density of the separating fluid to allow particle separations to be made at densities greater than that of water. However, if vessel size is to remain within economical limits, the particles processed in the bath vessel must have high settling rates in a IG gravitational field. Because of this requirement, heavy¬medium bath vessels are usually restricted to processing +V4-in. sizes. To extend efficient specific gravity separation to smaller sizes, the gravitational acceleration of particles is replaced by centrifugal acceleration. The settling of a small particle in a fluid in a centrifugal force field is similar to that found in a static bath except that the acceleration due to gravity, g, is replaced by a centrifugal acceleration where v, is the tangential velocity at radius r: V=kdm(P-P,), V'. (J) µ In more practical terms where the particles settle in a suspension of finer particles comprising the heavy media and with an effective suspension density p" V = kdm' (P P ) . v'. (2) U r To date the most effective use of this principle has been obtained with devices that rotate a liquid or suspension within a stationary enclosure in order to create centrifugal force. Cyclones are the most common devices used for this purpose, because they generate centrifu¬gal forces far greater than the force of gravity and therefore not only have high capacities but can treat finer sizes than bath-type vessels can. The two main types of cyclones used by industry are the heavy-media cyclone and the water-only cyclone. Also quite widely used is the DynaWhirlpool, which, though based on the same princi¬ple, differs in design from the conventional cyclone. HEAVY-MEDIA CENTRIFUGAL SEPARATORS Like the bath vessels, the heavy-media centrifugal separators em¬ploy media composed of micron-size particles suspended in water. However, the centrifugal force generated in these separators accentu¬ates the difference in settling rate between particles of different density and thus makes possible separations of finer size particles than can be treated in bath vessels. The two most common heavy-media centri¬fugal separators are the heavy-media cyclone and the DynaWhirlpool. Heavy-Media Cyclone Although cyclones were originally developed for use as classifiers or thickeners, it was later found that they could also effectively serve as heavy-media separators.63. 64, Design Features Fig. I I is a schematic of a typical cyclone developed to serve for any one of the following purposes: as a classifier, thickener, or specific gravity separator. The cyclone consists of a cylindrical section joined to a conical section, usually having an included angle of between 14° and 25°. Feed enters the cyclone tangentially through an orifice attached to the cylindrical section. The overflow orifice is located in the base plate of the cylindrical section. The vortex finder, a tube attached to the overflow orifice, extends into the cyclone from the base plate of the cylindrical section. The underflow orifice is located at the apex of the conical section. As some medium together with mineral particles is fed through the feed orifice, a vortex with a hollow air core extending from the overflow to the underflow orifice forms in the cyclone while hollow spray discharges form at each of these orifices. Under the influence of the centrifugal force, high specific-gravity particles move through the medium to the wall of the cyclone and descend in a spiral flow pattern to the underflow orifice. Those particles in the feed stream, lower in specific gravity than the feed medium, follow the major portion of the flow to the center of the core where they are caught in the high-velocity upward central current and are carried out through the overflow orifice. Fig. 12 shows a family of curves that illustrates how materials of varying specific gravity are recovered by a cyclone. Since the specific gravity of the medium is 1.40, the particles of 1.40 sp gr actually act as part of the medium and, regardless of the particle size, split between the underflow and overflow of the cyclone in proportion to the volume split of the medium. Particles higher in specific gravity than 1.40 are recovered in the underflow of the cyclone at increasing rates as the difference in specific gravity increases and the particle size increases. Particles lower than 1.40 in specific gravity are dis¬charged through the overflow orifice at increasing rates as the specific¬gravity difference increases and the particle size increases. However, all the curves originate at the fluid-flow ratio point for the finest particles of any gravity. Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust and the third most plentiful element in seawater. It is found in more than sixty minerals and in brines and seawater as a magnesium salt. One of the more important magnesium minerals is magnesium carbonate, MgCO3, with a theoretical maximum magnesia, MgO, content of 47.6%; this carbonate form represents the world's largest source of magnesia. The next most used sources for magnesia are magnesia-rich brines and seawater, where it occurs as magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride. Other commercially important magnesium-bearing minerals are dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2, which serves the aggregate industry as well as the chemical industry; brucite, Mg(OH)2, which is used in the production of both caustic and sintered magnesia; olivine, ([MgFe]2-SiO2), which serves the refractory and heat storage industries; talc, (H2Mg3(SiO3)4), which serves several industries as a filler and as an ingredient in cosmetics; and serpentine, (H4Mg3SiO9). All these minerals are of commercial value because of the desirable characteristics given to them by magnesia and by its placement in the crystal structure. These minerals are the starting raw materials for a wide range of products. These include the production of magnesium metal, and several grades of magnesia used for the production of both sintered magnesia for refractory manufacture and lighter fired caustic magnesia, the latter is used in fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, chemicals, in the treatment of waste water including pH control, and in the removal of sulfur compounds from exhaust stacks. Magnesite is one of several major minerals possessing a dual character, i.e., non-metallic industrial mineral because of its principal end use as a calcined/dead burned raw material in non-metallic end products and magnesium metal. A large percentage of the magnesia used to produce magnesium metal comes from seawater1 brines. The total primary metal production worldwide is about 350 ktpy. This report reviews magnesite solely as an industrial non- metallic raw material. Magnesite for most refractory purposes must have a content of sintered magnesia above 85%, with a preference for those sources that have the potential for 90 to 98% magnesia values. Dolomite, used in large tonnages because of its physical properties in the construction industry, also has a use in the chemical and the refractory industry. In its calcined form, dolomite is used as a slag addition in the making of steel, and it is used in a high-purity calcine to precipitate magnesium hydroxide from brines or seawater. The precipitated magnesium hydroxide is intermediate for the production of deadburned clinker for refractories and the production of magnesium metal. In many cases the high-purity magnesium hydroxide obtained by precipitation with calcined dolomite, or in some cases limestone, has supplanted much of the world's production of magnesia from the natural mineral magnesite. This is especially true of the United States and in major industrialized areas of Europe and Japan. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for its magnesia content is magnesite (MgCO3), one of the calcite group of rhombohedra1 carbonates, which includes calcite (CaCO3), siderite (Fe2CO3), and rhodocrosite (MnCO3), among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence magnesite and siderite form a complete series, of which the mineral breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well known end member. The radii of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgC03-CaCO3 series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but it occurs when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of this relationship is that calcite and dolomite are commonly found intermixed with magnesite. They occur, commonly, as identifiable crystal entities, which can be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by benefication techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO,. The pure mineral is found occasionally as transparent crystals resembling calcite. Magnesite principally contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and the silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Although the genesis of natural magnesite deposits can be complex, it is distinguished in nature in two distinct physical forms, namely crystalline, (with a wide range of visible crystal sizes) and cryptocrystalline, sometimes referred to as amorphous, where the crystal size is not detectable to the eye and will range from 1 to 10 pm. The two types not only differ in crystal structure but in the sizes of the deposits and in modes of formations. The crystalline form has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color range is from white to black with shades of yellow, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a significant indicator of purity but in a given deposit an experienced person can often roughly grade the magnesite by observing color and crystallinity. Macrocrystalline deposits occur in relatively few, but generally large, deposits on the order of several million tons. The ore shows a marble-like crystal structure and belongs to the sedimentary or metasomatic groups of origin. The cryptocrystalline variety of magnesite frequently occurs in many small deposits, although there are exceptions. Cryptocrystalline magnesite is typically massive with no cleavage and is sometimes descriptively called bone magnesite. The fracture is usually conchoidal, with a hardness of 3.5 to 5.0. The color is mainly white, but it can have tints of yellow, orange, or buff. Accessory silaceous minerals such as serpentine, quartz, or chalcedony are usually present. Calcium minerals are normally absent or in low concentration, this contrasting with the macrocrystalline form where calcium minerals are almost invariably present and some- times in high concentration. In today's world coal market, coal quality is becoming increasingly important. Often the coal quality parameters are one of the crucial considerations in the development of a coal mine. Because of the user's tighter specifications and because of strict environmental regulations, coal producers are being called on to predict with increasing accuracy, not only the quality of their product but also the variability of that quality. This area of reserve evaluation is naturally receiving a great deal of scrutiny. Consolidation Coal Company has developed reliable and sophisticated methods for predicting coal quality, but the company's efforts continue to search for even better techniques. The following is a step-wise summary of The methods currently used by consolidation coal company, with A recent project used as an example. Two of the newer, and as yet experimental techniques will be briefly discussed.

Pressure oxidation is a hydrometallurgical oxidative pretreatment for refractory ores, such as sulfide ores. Here, simultaneous alkaline pressure oxidation and sodium cyanide leaching treatments were carried out on a pyritic ore from the Mulatos Mine located in Sahuaripa, Sonora, Mexico. Mineral characterization, agitation leaching, hot cyanidation under atmospheric pressure conditions, simultaneous moderated pressure oxidation and leaching, and kinetic testing results are shown. The modified variables were temperature, pressure, and cyanide concentration. Characterization indicated that pyrite was the main mineral. Simultaneous pressure oxidation and leaching experiments were conducted at a temperature range of 40–80 °C, oxygen pressure of 87.5–200 psi, and cyanide concentration of 0.8–1.2 wt% in a 2-L Parr pressure reactor. A dissolution rate of 81–86% was achieved under the following conditions: 87.5 psi, 80 °C, 0.8 wt% NaCN, for 1 h.

Within the industrial marketplace barium sulfate has an established role as a filler or extender pigment for use in a wide array of applications. The focus of this paper is to outline a number of these applications and in each one characterizes those features of barium sulfate which provide value. Following this is a discussion of the process techniques which have been used to develop value from a selected class of barite ores found in southern Missouri. It is appropriate to define some terms which may help in clarifying some concepts as presented. Use of the term barium sulfate refers broadly to the chemical compound BaSO4 Barite will generally refer to the naturally occurring barium sulfate ores and their properties. Barytes, whether bleached or not, will refer to barite ore made suitable for industrial applications.

Roof bolting has been widely used in hard rock underground mines for its many advantages. In this paper, the applicability of roof bolts to mine openings in frozen ground and effects of bolts on the stability of the openings are presented. A comprehensive finite element program ABAQUS, was used to analyze the temperature distribution, the stress field, and the displacement field around a mine opening. Openings supported by roof bolts and unsupported were analyzed. The thermal and mechanical processes were treated as a quasi-coupled problem, with the thermal analyses being conducted first, followed by the mechanical analyses in each case. For the opening under consideration with a roof area of 15 m2, five to seven roof bolts are appropriate. When the number of bolts are less than five, the displacement within the ground can be improved only locally.

The term "diatomite" implies the nearly pure sedimentary accumulation of diatoms. Sedimentary and chemical purity, low density, inertness, intricate fine structure, high brightness and other properties give the diatom and diatomite unique industrial usefulness and commercial value in high value functional filler and specialty filter aid products. Although diatomite deposits occur commonly throughout the world in Miocene and younger marine and lacustrine sediments, deposits that contain significant reserves of crude suitable for these quality sensitive markets are uncommon. U.S. production is centered on exceptional deposits located in Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and California. Evaluation of deposits requires understanding of geology, mining, production and end use. As crude quality in deposits varies within and between strata, ore suitable for quality sensitive end uses must be identified through sampling and evaluation programs tailored to permit recognition of critical variations.

The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate the utilization of process mineralogy to improve the plant performance of a large gold-silver operation. From raw ore to tailings, from concentrate to off-gases, nearly all aspects of the recovery process have benefited from the mineralogical work. The involvement of a process-oriented mineralogist on a routine basis permitted the plant to "unlock" the reasons for process problems and to take corrective measures such as adjusting and modifying the mill circuit and the process parameters. Process mineralogy has also been of substantial value for the selection and operation of equipment. This resulted in a more cost-effective operation with improved precious metals recovery and better by-product quality. Specific modifications made in recent years are largely related to mineralogical factors, particularly the inherent precious metals mineralogy and alteration characteristics of the ore.

The Rawas Gold Project in Indonesia has a high silver ore with a ratio of approximately 25:1 Ag/Au. Four process flow­sheets were considered during the development phase, ie. full Merrill Crowe, CIP, CIP with zinc cementation of eluate and a hybrid Merrill Crowe - CIP circuit. The process plant was constructed using a CIP circuit with zinc cementation of eluate. Unusual aspects of the design include an elution circuit designed to strip three batches of car­bon per day and an elution column designed to operate with either upward or downward solution flow. Significant improvements implemented since starting up the plant include the use of local materials and labour for relining the mill, a change from lime to caustic soda for pH modification and the elimination of caustic soda dosing to the elution pre-soak step.

Independence Mining Company, Inc. (IMC) has for the past several years processed refractory gold ores at its Jerritt Canyon operation near Elko, Nevada. The ore is typical of those of the Carlin Trend and is refractory due to physical encapsulation of gold in carbon, pyrite, and arsenopyrite. It is also "preg robbing" due to the contained organic carbon that acts as a gold adsorber. Refractory ores require some form of pretreatment before cyanidation to enable economical recovery of gold. The metallurgical facility at Jerritt Canyon is unique in that it consists of two distinct pretreatment methods for the recovery of gold: a chemical process utilizing chlorine and a pyro-metal­lurgical process employing oxidative roasting. This paper pro­vides a comparison of the two methods highlighting flow sheets, pretreatment operation detail, performance comparisons, and pertinent environmental data.

The Coal Utilization review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. Coal utilization technology is improving due to the urgency with the 1990 Clean Air Act and the incentives provided by the Clean Coal Technology (CCT) program. Advances in the CCT are the subject of this report because of their broad industry application, support and involvement. Clean coal demonstration program Projects in the $5 billion Clean Coal Technology program are jointly funded cooperative agreements - not contracts - between government and industry. The industry participant in each project contributes at least 50% of the total cost. The participant takes primary responsibility for the project and is awarded any patent rights for inventions that may occur during the demonstration. The government, on the other hand, ensures that schedules are met, costs are controlled and project objectives are met.

The solution mining review did not arrive in time for publication in the May issue. The term solution mining is commonly used to refer to heap leaching, dump leaching, in situ mining and bore hole slurry mining technologies. The US Bureau of Mines is continuing with research in these areas. Commercial application of these technologies is progressing. There is an ongoing cooperative research project between the Bureau of Mines and the Santa Cruz Joint Venture to evaluate in situ copper mining at a field site near Casa Grande, AZ. The project is currently in the environmental permitting stage. The Bureau is preparing an environmental assessment for the project as part of the National Environmental Policy Act. The Bureau is also continuing with laboratory experiments to study the leaching characteristics of atacamite ore from the field test site, as

Biodiversity assessments that are developed in different stages of a mining project, have different objectives that define the methodology to be used in each of these stages. In this way, we define two stages of a project: 1) the time at which assesses the state of biodiversity or biological components, before any intervention in the project area, previously defining the area of direct influence and indirect influence of the project for each biological group to be evaluated and 2) the time when certain groups or biological, are monitored during the developmental stages of the project with you to obtain information about the level impact they may have, for project activities. It discusses the methodological differences that must be used in both biodiversity assessments: to develop biological baselines and in those assessments aimed at monitoring different components of biodiversity.

During the cyanide leaching of gold ores containing copper minerals, aurocyanide (Au(CN)f) is produced and typically recovered using activated carbon. However, free cyanide, as well as cyanide associated with cuprous cyanide complexes, are generally not recovered from the barren liquor. This results in a significant economic penalty in high cyanide consumption due to the dissolution of copper. 1\vo different configurations of a novel method for the treatment of barren liquor streams for cop­per recovery and cyanide recycle are described. Recovery of copper and cyanide is affected using solvent extraction (XI 7950). Loaded organic is stripped with a high copper, high caus­tic solution which is electrowon to produce copper metal. Depleted electrolyte is treated with sulfuric acid to recover cyanide which is returned to the leaching circuit. Results of benchscale and mini-pilot plant experiments are presented.

The mine characteristic curve represents the relation between the airflow in a system and the pressure drop across the system. In a single fan system, this relation can be easily drawn by assuming different values of the airflow and calculating the corresponding pressure drop according to Atkinson’s law. In a multiple-fan system this cannot be done for each fan simultaneously. However, an alternative mathematical method for plotting subsystem characteristic curves on subsystem quantity coordinates is outlined here that achieves this objective. The Hardy Cross algorithm has been combined with a switching-parameters technique and has been used to trace subsystem characteristic curves. An example using four fans in a complex network is presented here. This example illustrates the nature of the problem and the difficulty of detecting unstable conditions in this type of network.

Scott Lawson will be discussing "The Role of the Supervisor in Mining Operations" written by Brent Chamberlain of Independence Mining Corporation. Scott has more than 25 years in human resources management in the mining industry. He has worked in surface and underground mining environments in both precious and base metal mines. A graduate of Ohio University, Scott is currently manager of human resources at the Independence Mining Company's Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining operation located in Victor, Colorado. The only direction that I received from Scott was that he has to leave by 11:45 a.m. as he has a tee-off time with his boss at 1:00 p.m. Thank you to Scott for filling in today.

During the 1970's geostatisticians were often accused of not paying sufficient attention to geologic features in the computerized generation of ore reserves. Unfortunately this charge was all-too-often justified and the results of such studies tended to be oversimplified and failed to reveal the full potential of computerized reserve estimation and geostatistical methods. There were some notable exceptions to this trend. Techniques were described that paid a great deal of respect to the geologic characteristics peculiar to certain deposits (Rendu J-M, 1984; Barnes T. E., 1982). At Gold Fields several techniques have been developed for handling the geologic characteristics of orebodies for reserve estimation purposes. These have developed over time and the evolution of their adoption has been a reflection of our own learning experience from the practical application of computerised reserve estimation on many precious metals deposits.

A mathematical model of a shaking table is being developed, for inclusion in a package for the simulation of gravity concentration. The general form of the modules and how they fit into the package is briefly described. The separation on a shaking table is controlled by a number of operating variables and the importance of these variables in the model development is discussed. The influence of wash water, feed pulp density, deck slope, deck amplitude and mass feed rate are reported. The form of the model is described being based on the probability of a particle of defined size and density reporting to a specific discharge site. The mathematical relationships which relate size and density distributions to variations in the operating parameters are presented. The use of these functions in the prediction of the performance of a shaking table is outlined.
