Bacterial oxidation of gold-encapsulating sulfide minerals in low-grade refractory ores was investigated over a period of one year. Crushed ore samples were held in wet, bacteria-inoculated, aerated columns. Sulfide mineral oxidation data were correlated with subsequent gold cyanide extractabilities. Experimental results for both sulfide conversion and gold extraction were compared with a biooxidation kinetics model that incorporates rock size, mineral grain size, and heterogeneous pyrite reaction kinetics. Using the model, extrapolations were made over three years for biooxidation of ore in large stockpiles. Ferric ion (oxidant) diffusion in the solution-filled pores of the rock matrix does not control the biooxidation kinetics of ore crushed to -25 mm.

The demand for rare earth elements for everyday technology and applications has initiated much research into the extraction and recovery of these rare earth elements. An otherwise unknown group of minerals, eudialyte is a zircon silicate consisting of rare earth oxides (REO), contained in a unique mineral structure and represented by a complex chemical formula. Research into extraction and recovery of rare earth elements involves various beneficiation and hydrometallurgical techniques. The goal of beneficiation being to efficiently liberate and upgrade the REO content, followed by hydrometallurgy to extract the desired elements. This overview will discuss previous research on treating eudialyte group minerals via different mineral processing and extraction techniques.

DuPont’s Florida Plant has been mining in northeast Florida and supplying titanium-bearing minerals, zircon and staurolite for over 50years.The site has successfully implemented and “sustained” a land reclamation/habitat enhancement program that goes beyond regulatory requirements and standard industry practices. However, the term sustainability has been used by so many organizations, many with divergent viewpoints, that it is important for a mine to develop its over-all concept and approach to sustainable operation. As a foundation, the outstanding reclamation efforts at DuPont’s mine will be presented followed by a broader look at the overall sustainability strategies and tactics used at the site.

More than 80% of U.S. roof bolts are fully-grouted, but about 1500 roof falls are reported each year. Anchorage failure of a fully grouted bolt can occur when the roof is active near the top of the hole. This paper reports on an extensive series of short-encapsulation pull tests (in which the bolts are installed with only 1 ft of resin) that were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH) Mine Safety Research Laboratory and operating mines in WV and PA. The tests confirmed that poor anchorage can been countered under some weak rock conditions. Suggestions for improving anchorage are included.

The term ball clay is applied to plastic sedimentary clays that have a high content of kaolinite and that possess white firing properties and high green strength (Mitchell and Stentiford, 1973). However, the name ball clay is not derived from any specific property of the clay. Instead, it comes from the original method of production in southwestern England (Scott, 1929). From open pits, the clay was cut into cubes with hand tools. The sides of the cubes were about 220 to 250 mm (9 to 10 in.) and weighed 14 to 16 kg (30 to 35 lb.). The eventual rounding of the corners with handling before sale gave rise to the term ball clay. Ball clays provide the workability and green strength required by the whiteware section of the world's ceramic industry. The main applications are in the sanitaryware, tile and tableware sectors. Each, though, requires particular technical properties in the ball clay component. The clay has to be as white firing as possible for all applications. However, for sanitary-ware, the rheological properties are most important. For tableware, fired whiteness and freedom from specking are the main criteria. Tiles need a reasonable green strength but the clay also needs to be cost-effective. The technical properties of the individual clays in any deposit depend on the clay mineral assemblage. This, in turn, depends on the geological formation of the deposits. Hence, it is the latter that largely determines the market sector for which the clay blends from a particular deposit are suited. Formation of ball clays Ball clays are formed from three main components - kaolinite, micaceous minerals and quartz - while carbonaceous material is also often present. The crystallinity of the kaolinite and mica varies. There are also occasional minor occurrences of feldspar, chlorite, montmorillonite andmixed. layer minerals. Marcasite, siderite and anatase also occur in small amounts. The properties of the clay depend on its mineralogical composition and its particle size distribution, particularly in the lowest size ranges. The original source rocks and the environment of deposition of the clay are the controlling factors. The importance of weathering processes in the formation of ball clays has long been recognized (Bristow, 1968). The diversity of source rocks produces considerable variation in the clay minerals formed. Therefore, each deposit is unique, with time-related variation within it. The greatest development of a weathering mantle takes place in a tropical climatic environment. Plant remains confirm that most ball clay deposits were formed under hot and wet conditions. Sedimentation of the clays had to be in fresh or low salinity water or clay minerals detrimental to whiteware manufacture would have been formed. Fresh water traps for the ball clay, sand and lignite sequences depended -on tectonic features, such as basin development along fault zones or lakes and lagoons on the edge of a large scale embayment. INTRODUCTION The United States Uranium Registry (USUR) tissue program was funded in 1978 by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) through its Human Health and Assessments Division, and registrant enrollment began in 1980. It is operated by Hanford Environmental Health Foundation (HERF), Richland, Washington, with support provided by Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL).** The USUR tissue program is the first systematic effort to contact and gain assistance of workers occupationally exposed to uranium and to seek and study uranium deposition in human tissue. This paper describes the program objectives, populations selected for study, procedures for enrolling workers in the program, types of tissue to be studied, and analytical procedures to be used. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES The objectives of the USUR tissue program are to: 1) Determine the distribution and concentration of uranium, if any, in the tissues of occupationally exposed workers. 2) Compare bioassay measurements of exposed individuals with the results of analyses of tissues obtained at autopsy. 3) Seek evidence of histopathologic changes related to any uranium deposition that may be present. 4) Conduct analyses of whole bodies, when available, to obtain more precise data on the uranium burdens, if any, in the body and organs, and especially the distribution in parts of the body, such as the skeleton, that are not usually accessible for sampling. 5) Develop data that will assist in evaluating a) the accuracy of current in-vivo measurement techniques, b) the propriety of existing regulations, and c) the adequacy of current protection programs. SELECTION OF POPULATIONS FOR STUDY Selection of the populations for the USUR tissue program was based on studies of the United States Uranium Registry described elsewhere (0c81). Potential populations for study were quite varied because of occupational exposure to different chemical forms of uranium, different levels and eras of exposure, varying ability to identify populations exposed in the past, and the general interest and cooperativeness of the populations. Nevertheless, certain identifiable populations emerged that were both willing to participate in the study and likely to provide useful information. Among the targeted populations are individuals who were exposed to uranium prior to the existence of modern exposure standards. These individuals are presently being enrolled by the USUR. The reliability of concentration and distribution data and the demonstration of effects are more likely in such individuals than in those who have received less exposure. However, the targeted groups also include individuals who Have been exposed to permissible levels of uranium, and reference employees in uranium plants who have not worked with uranium. The lesser exposures are of immediate interest because of the rarity of heavy exposures under current standards. The sampling of potentially exposed individuals with negative in-vivo measurement results may serve to check the adequacy of in-vivo measurements in the detection of deposition. [ENROLLMENT PROCEDURE] The enrollment of participants follows three patterns. 1) Presently employed workers are enrolled by the cooperative efforts of USUR staff with the medical, industrial relations, and/or health physics personnel of the uranium facility. Volunteers may be enrolled by medical personnel at the time of their physical examination or by health physics personnel at the time of a bioassay or lung counting procedure. Follow-up after initial contacts with currently employed uranium workers is carried out by on-site personnel, but subsequent follow-up is the responsibility of the Registry. 2) Retired workers are contacted by mail, with a covering letter from their former employer supporting the principles of the study but leaving participation in the program on an entirely voluntary basis. 3) An alternate method of enrollment is to obtain a USUR autopsy consent after death from the next of kin. As part of enrollment in the program, permission is requested for access to the individual's medical and exposure data, and a short occupational history is filled out. The autopsy permission agreement signed by the individual is for an initial period of 5 years; the USUR ordinarily seeks renewal of the agreement upon its expiration. While this agreement provides

INTRODUCTION In February 1981, the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety (CAIRS) initiated a routine Personal Alpha Dosimetry service for personnel of the Canadian uranium mining industry. This service is based on the use of the [Personal Alpha Dosimeter] developed by the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). The origins of personal alpha dosimetry and its rational are briefly described. Technical and organizational aspects of a routine personal alpha dosimetry service are outlined in this paper. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND International recommendations (1) and Canadian regulations have established Maximum Permissible Exposures (MPE) for each source of radiation exposure. Uranium workers in mines and mills are exposed to external radiation ( [y] rays) and to internal radiations ( [B] and [a] particles) which are delivered to the respiratory track by airborne alpha emitters (Rn and Th daughters and Long Lived Dust). To date, dosimetry for uranium workers has been performed by area monitoring/collective dosimetry. In North America the concentration of radon daughters is routinely measured by grab samples taken at the work place and by on-site gross alpha counting. The concentration of potential alpha energy is then calculated (usually by Kusnetz method) and expressed in Working Levels (WL). The time spent by each worker at a given work place is determined from his time sheets and used to calculate the individual monthly exposures to airborne alpha emitters, which is then expressed in Working Level Months (WLM). The uncertainties attached to such a procedure are obvious even in the case of frequent grab samplings and can be expected to lead to an underestimation of individual doses. Among fifteen possible sources identified in a mine situation, (2) four may stretch the standard deviation of the measurements' distribution, nine may lead to an underestimation and two may lead to either an underestimation or to an overestimation. To improve this situation, in 1971 the Atomic Energy Commission began studying the use of personal alpha dosimeters to determine individual exposures from the airborne alpha emitters encountered in the uranium industry environments. Criteria for a Personal Alpha Dosimeter In order to minimize the difficulties encountered in determining exposures received by uranium workers, the CEA in co-operation with the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada (AECB), has developed a set of criteria for personal alpha dosimeters. Exposures may be determined easily and accurately using this criteria. Autonomy The dosimeter must operate for at least 10 to 12 hours. Excess time spent in the mine or in the facility may possibly be related to an accidental situation causing unusual levels of radioactivity. Since the dosimeter may be needed in non-underground settings where a cap lamp is not used, full autonomy is desirable. Maintenance, Periodicity of Reading In order to complement other dosimetry systems, the personal alpha dosimeter should be read monthly when the filter should also be changed. Routine air flow checks can be made according to local conditions (e.g. diesel loading). Radioisotopes Identification Since the exposure unit (WLM) is based on the concentration of potential alpha energy in the air, the personal alpha dosimeter should be capable of identifying each short lived alpha emitter included in the calculation of the WI, and WLM. Permanent Exposure Record Three points may be considered here: 1. In many countries, lung cancer in uranium workers is a compensable occupational disease. In some instances, compensation is awarded when it can be proven that the worker has received an exposure above a certain limit. The present uncertainty of the individual exposure makes the compensation procedure difficult. 2. By design, a personal alpha dosimeter must representatively sample all airborne particles, ranging in size from the unattached fraction to the upper limit of respirable aerosols (0.001 to 5 µm). The dosimeter must offer minimal resistance to the penetration of these aerosols. While the mining/ milling environment presents harsh conditions which may accidentally contaminate the dosimeter, it is important to be able to distinguish these cases of contamination and still obtain accurate readings. 3. A dependable dose register is most valuable for further epidimiological studies. The dependability of such a data base increases with the possibility of a second assessment of the dosimeters' reading (filter, film).

This article describes research conducted by the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on removing sulfur from coal using a combination of gravity concentration and flotation methods. The research used the gravity and centrifugal force capabilities of Humphrey's spiral to remove part of the pyritic sulfur and ash. Flotation of the Humphrey's spiral coal concentrate removed additional sulfur and ash. In addition to obtaining good recoveries of high quality coal, the tests demonstrated that pyrite in the wastes could be isolated as enriched flotation products by the combined gravity-flotation approach. Domestic coal production in 1980 reached a record 757 Mt (835 million st). Forecasts are that coal production and use will approach 907 Mt (1 billion st) by 1985, with much of the increased production being used for electrical generation. Of current production, it is estimated that about 454 Mt (500 million st) of coal nationwide are subjected to some degree of cleaning, ranging from crushing and screening to gravity concentration and flotation. With expanded coal production and more rigid controls placed on coal combustion, it is reasonable to assume that the tonnage subjected to some form of preparation will increase, with time, thereby adding to the burden of coal rejects being generated. A major problem associated with increased coal use for electricity generation is the need for utilities to conform to emerging federal air quality standards for sulfur oxide emissions from power plants. To a lesser extent, other industrial operations burning coal face a similar situation. Controlling sulfur oxide emissions by using low-sulfur coal or resorting to stack gas desulfurization are two recognized approaches, but removing sulfur from the coal, if possible, by physical beneficiation before combustion is preferred because of its simplicity and lower cost. Reducing the inorganic sulfur in coal to tolerable limits by physical beneficiation, including flotation, as now practiced, is still relatively inefficient and has not kept pace with the more sophisticated physical beneficiation approaches generally employed by the nonfuel minerals industry. As one phase of a broad program conducted by the Mineral Resources Institute at the University of Alabama on sampling and evaluating impounded fine size waste coal, tests were made using samples from two impoundments to determine the quality of coal recoverable by a combination of Humphrey's spiral concentration and flotation. Particular attention was given to organic and inorganic sulfur deportment and distribution in the various products. Another objective was to determine if pyrite in the waste could be recovered for possible marketing. The use of Humphrey's spirals to concentrate fine coal was practiced as early as 1947. At that time, the Hudson Coal Co. used spirals to concentrate anthracite fines. In 1950, spirals were used to treat fine-size bituminous coal and later, in 1976, spirals were reportedly used for removing pyrite from fine-size coal. More recent investigations have discussed the use of Humphrey's spirals for treating fine-size waste coal in Alabama. Samples Description Washer waste samples were obtained from two impoundments. One sample was representative of waste generated during washing steam coal from the American, Pratt, and Nickel plate seams in Alabama. The other sample represented metallurgical coal washer waste from processing coal from the Carter, Johnson, and Milldale seams. Partial samples analyses are shown in Table 1, and screen analyses of the samples are given in Tables 2 and 3. Screen ana¬lyses showed that one sample contained about 4% of material coarser than 2 mm (10 mesh) and the other contained about 13% of plus 2 mm (10 mesh) material. Also, the analyses indicated that ash and sulfur increased as the material's particle size decreased. Experimental Laboratory Tests Sink and float tests using a heavy liquid (1.4 specific gravity) were made on the different screen sizes shown in Tables 2 and 3 to determine the effectiveness of gravity concentration for separating coal from pyrite and other gangue constituents. Tests indicated that gravity separation, under optimum conditions, could be expected to yield coal products containing 10-12% ash, and 0.2-0.3% pyritic sulfur. Landusky Mining, Inc. and Zortman Mining, Inc. are two registered Montana Corporations wholly owned by Pegasus Gold, Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C. The Zortman and Landusky Mines are located in the Little Rockies District of central Montana. The Zortman-Landusky mines produced 2,100 kg gold in 1982. A total of 3,250,000 t of ore per year are mined during the period March 1, to September 15, at an average grade of 1.04 gm/t (0.03 oz/t) gold and 13.4 gm/t (0.385 oz/t) silver at a cutoff grade of 0.35 grams of gold/ton (0.01 oz of Au/t) of ore. The stripping ratio during 1983 is anticipated to be 0.75/1 waste to ore. Combined average plant capacity of the two Merrill-Crowe plants is 9,840 lpm (2,600 gpm). The combined heap spray capacity of the two plants approaches 18,900 lpm (5,000 gpm). The mine employs approximately 200 people, about half of these work for the mining companies and the other half for the mining contractor, N. A. Degerstrom of Spokane, Washington. Net profit in 1982 for Zortman and Landusky Mining, Inc. approximated $4,900,000 at an average gold price of $11.40/gm.

Water is the mainstay for beneficiation of fine size coal and minerals; however, it is also the least desirable constituent in the final product. The basic concept of the novel process described in this paper is based on the differential surface heat absorption capacity of individual particles, which differs for different species of mineral. When a mixture of fine material is exposed to a radiant energy source, the various solids components present in the mixture will absorb heat energy depending on their composition and there will be difference in the surface temperature of the particles. When this differentially heated solid mixture is placed on a moving belt, which is coated with low temperature melting resin, the hotter component of the mixture will stick to the belt and relatively cooler will stay free on the belt and fall off at the end of the belt run. Experiments were conducted with pyrite, coal and quartz of 6 x18 mesh particle size. The goal of the test program was to find the optimum conditions at which there exists a required temperature difference between minerals and coal particles by controlling the operating and system variables. Preliminary tests results showed that there is a potential for separating mineral matter from coal using the thermo-adhesive separation technique.

In the field of minerals processing the concentration of valuable minerals normally takes place in suspensions of ore particles in liquids. The fluid resistance offered by Newtonian liquids to the movement of free settling spheres for the limiting cases of creep flow and turbulent flow is well described by Stokes' and Newton's Laws. However, these equations are not applicable to non-Newtonian fluids, since the relationship between applied shearing stress and resulting rate of shear is a non-linear function, and more than one viscosity parameter is necessary to describe their rheological properties. For this reason, the term "apparent viscosity," which has been commonly used to explain the flow resistance of the non-Newtonian systems including suspensions, may be misleading. A rigorous analysis of the mechanisms of momentum transport of solid-liquid systems is complex indeed. There are many variables that affect the properties of such systems, and precise limitations and assumptions are necessary in order to produce quantitative relationships for predicting their behavior. Very dilute suspensions of spherical particles in Newtonian liquids of identical density as the solids have been examined in the past (12); however, the study of suspensions in which there is a considerable difference in density, between the liquid and the suspended solids has been neglected.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines' Salt Lake City Research Center has developed porous polymeric beads containing immobilized non-living biological materials for extracting metal contaminants from waste waters. Immobilized biological materials include peat moss, algae, biological polymers, and other materials that demonstrate high affinities for heavy metals. The beads, designated as BIO-FIX beads, have distinct advantages over traditional methods of utilizing biological materials in that they have excellent handling characteristics and can be used in conventional processing equipment or low-maintenance systems. Toxic metals such as copper, cadmium, zinc, lead, and mercury are several of the many heavy metals effectively removed from mine waste waters using BIO-FIX beads, Continuous cyclic testing indicated that the beads continued to produce treated effluents which met National Drinking Water Standards (NOWS) after 150 loading-elution cycles. Adsorbed metals were removed from the beads using dilute mineral acids. In many cases, the extracted metals were further concentrated to enable processors to reclaim the metals, thus minimizing the generation of a hazardous sludge, Tests indicated that use of the beads in a low­maintenance system was particularly effective for treating remote acid mine drainage waters and small toxic seeps from hard-rock mining districts.

Dunn has written an excellent paper providing a wealth of advice on what is often the most costly consumable in the mineral processing plant. As he pointed out, grinding media selection and quality control can play a major role in successful plant operation. Owing to the economic importance of this topic, there are some important factors related to media sizing that I believe merit further comment. Dunn made reference to a slightly simplified version of the Azzaroni (1981) equation and pointed out its successful use for the Henderson SAG and Climax ball mills. Although both formulas are empirically based on successful plant experience, a notable discrepancy between them is that Bond has factored the work index by the ore specific gravity. This is invariably so, as the Bond work index is derived from the mass grindability (in grams per revolution) measured in a test mill with a fixed volume of solids load (Bond, 1961). A material having the same structural integrity but double the density of another will have double the grindability and just over half the work index. Thus, for the general case, specific gravity should be incorporated into any media sizing formulation that uses work index as the criterion for resistance to breakage.

Deposition of calcium carbonate scale on activated carbon in the Pinson Mining mill carbon column circuit was causing erratic gold recovery rate, long acid wash time, high carbon attrition and long strip times. Continuous addition of a blended antiscalant into the mill thickener overflow at 8 ppm reduced the average carbon acid wash weight loss from approximately 10% to < 2%. Cleaner carbon improved the gold loading rate in the mill column. The loading on Column I was increased to 175-225 oz/ton carbon from 125-150 oz/ton for a two-day carbon advance cycle. The higher loading capability has given Pinson more flexibility and better control of gold flow through their carbon adsorption, stripping and electrowin­ning processes. Preventing calcium carbonate build-up on activated carbon with this antiscalant reduced acid wash batch time. This enabled Pinson to acid wash and regenerate every batch of stripped carbon for all the adsorption circuits. Shorter strip times have also resulted from the lowering of the calcium carbonate scale level in the loaded carbon. Carbon consumption has been reduced and is now averaging 0.046 lb/ton ore for the first six months of 1990 compared to 0.072 and 0.083 lb/ton respectively in 1989 and 1988.

Facing an orchestrated assault from the anti-mining lobby and its congressional allies, the Mining Law of 1872 may soon be either dramatically changed or even repealed. In 1989, Sen. Dale Bumpers (D-AK) introduced Senate Bill 1126 entitled the "Mining Law of 1989." It has been through several hearings and is still in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, where Sen. Bumpers is the number two ranking Democrat. In the House, Rep. Nick J. Rahall (D-WV) introduced the "Mineral Development and Exploration Act of 1990," HR 3866. This bill is in the House Committee on Interior and Insu¬lar Affairs. (The numbers on these bills, and perhaps some of their language, will be changed when they are reintroduced in early 1991. However, their substance is expected to remain substantially unchanged. Bill numbers here refer to legislation as it was numbered in the 1990 Congress.) In the eyes of its supporters, Bumpers&apos; S 1126 appears to be more complete and has the inside track over the Rahall bill. Bumpers&apos; bill includes provisions for royalties, bonding and reclamation. The Rahall bill is criticized by opponents of the Mining Law for its failure to include a royalty provision and for not having specific bonding and reclamation provisions.

The McLaughlin Mine is based on a world class epithermal gold deposit located in the coastal thrust fault of northern California, about 1 12 air km (70 air miles) north of San Francisco. Owned and operated by Homestake Mining Co., the McLaughlin deposit contains about 18 Mt (20 million st) of gold ore at an average grade of 5.2 g/t (0.152 oz per st), or about 93 t (3 million oz). The area was identified as a gold target by Homestake in early 1978. Drilling confirmed it to be a commercial deposit by 1980. The mine was then planned, engineered, built and brought into production by March of 1985. The deposit was historically a part of the Knoxville District. It was mined for cinnabar, which was used to produce mercury for use in recovering gold and silver in the Mother Lode and Comstock districts. At that time, the mine was called the Manhatten and later the One Shot Mine. It was worked for more than 100 years, producing about 76,000 flasks of mercury without any awareness of the presence of economic concentrations of gold. By 1978, the site was largely disturbed and entirely unreclaimed.

Equity investments and loans are made in oil and gas and mining projects by the World Bank Group (WBG) as one piece of a multi-faceted quest to reduce poverty. The Bank mandate to reduce poverty through private sector investments has been contested by civil society organizations, so the Bank has established an independent review, entitled the Extractive Industries Review (EIR) www.eireview.org. The EIR is reviewing, from the perspective of affected stakeholders, the impacts and benefits of WBG development policy. In this paper, we review the indicators used by the WBG, academics and others to measure the effectiveness of investments. We argue that currently used frameworks and indicators do not capture local or regional data sets, and instead focus on available and easily aggregated information at the national level. A case review of the WBG?s International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Multilateral Insurance Guarantee Agency (MIGA) investments and loans in Sub-Saharan Africa provide material data buttressing the argument. Poverty studies in the extractive industries have a long way to go toward measuring and accounting for dollars spent and invested. The paper concludes with a call for project level and regional indicators to track poverty alleviation. Data gathered for this research was funded in part by the Extractive Industries Review.

INTRODUCTION A compaction grouting program to control ground loss, and to minimize surface settlement, was developed for the West Tunnel of the Phoenix Storm Drain Tunnels. The West Tunnel was 4,200 m long, 7.56 m in excavated diameter, and was excavated with shallow cover through the central Phoenix business district. The tunnel could not have been successfully excavated without the compaction grouting program. HISTORY After heated political debate over a ten year period, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) was granted approval to build the Papago Freeway, an extension of Interstate 10, through central Phoenix. To comply with environmental constraints, a portion of the Freeway was depressed, requiring an excavation 10 meters in depth, thus intersecting surface run-off from the northern section of Phoenix. This required that ADOT and Project Design Consultant, Howard, Needles, Tammen & Bergendoff (HNTB) design a drain system to collect run-off and transport it approximately 4 kilometers to the Salt River through the City of Phoenix. Tunnels were chosen for the main discharge conduits because depth and location of the system made cut and cover construction impractical. A contract for construction of the tunnels was awarded to Shank-Artukovich-Ohbayashi (S-A-O) on May 24, 1984.

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is a quite diffuse environmental problem in dismissed sulphur mine districts. AMD is related to sulphur oxidation of abandoned tailings, generating heavy metal-bearing streams with high iron and sulphate contents and low pH. Treatments of AMD aim firstly to increase the pH to reduce its leaching power causing the further release and mobilization of heavy metals through soil solution and groundwaters. Increasing the pH also allows the precipitation of iron (III) (involved in sulphur oxidation and then in AMD generation) and the partial removal of other toxic components such as arsenic. pH adjustment and the reduction of the high concentration of iron are also necessary for the successive biological treatment in permeable reactive barriers (PRB) with sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) (II step, biologically mediated precipitaton/biosorption) to avoid the rapid plugging of the barrier (for the large amounts of iron precipitates) and to ensure neutral pH conditions for SRB growth. In this work the first step (chemical precipitation) of a combined chemical and biological treatment of AMD is presented. Experimental data from column tests using carbonate stones to remove iron and increase pH were reported. Toxicity tests have been carried out on the treated wastewaters by Lepidium sativum.

Development of process control in the metallurgical industry over the past ten years has been highly influenced by technical advances centered on use of computers as well as on measurement and associated equipment. The discussion in this section reviews advances in computer technology, measurement devices, data input-output techniques, and their use in mineral processing for the objective of guiding application of process control principles. Advances in the next ten-year period through the 1980&apos;s can be foreseen in the cost and application of data handling facilities in the coincident fields of data processing equipment, interface and control devices, and computer programming systems. These will lead to greater acceptance in a widely expanding range of mineral processing fields. It can be predicted that process control methods now known to be effective will become more re- fined. Costs of on-stream analyzers for assays and particle data will be reduced. Continued innovation can be anticipated in measurement devices required for effecting control. Control techniques developed over the last decade in key process operations such as crushing, grinding, flotation, smelting, and hydrometallurgical processes are described in the following chapters. The general forms taken by computer process control are first outlined briefly.
