Particle-size Distribution Specifications for Particulates. Feed to and finished products from size-reduction operations are defined in terms of the particulate sizes involved. It is also well to know whether the ultimate individual particle is being measured, or, if any aggregation or agglomeration of particles exists, whether this has been created by the size-reduction operation. The most complete description of a powder is given by its particle¬size distribution. This can be plotted in terms of cumulative percent oversize or undersize in relation to the diameters of particles, or it can be plotted as a distribution of the amounts present in each unit of diameter against the several diameters. It is common to employ a weight basis for percentage, but there are some data in the literature where frequency, or number of particles, is used. The basis of percent¬age, whether weight, frequency, or some less commonly used factor, should be specified, as also should be stated the diameter, its units, and preferably whether determined by sieve, settling velocity, or other¬wise. Fig. I presents two sets of distributions-ore cumulative and the other in unit intervals. The slopes of the 5-µ intervals of the cumulative curves are converted to percent per micron and plotted as a block, or histogram, from which smooth curves are derived. Powder A has a narrower, or tighter, size range for the bulk of its weight than powder B. Both materials have the same weights below and above the size marked by the arrow. Simpler treatments of distribution are possible. In some cases the significant value is the top size. Since the 100% point is dubious, some amount, as 95 or 98%, so specified, can be called top size. In other cases the percent on some sieve helps define coarseness. Merely stating that all, or all but a small percentage, passes a given sieve is inadequate for defining the true fineness or a material. Complete parti¬cle-size analysis to show the distribution is essential for most compari¬sons and calculations. Particle-Size Equations. A number of equations have been pro¬posed to correlate the quantity of a particulate material with its parti¬cle size to obtain a distribution relationship. 1.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter seeks to provide an overview of important factors involved in the implementation of heap leach technology as a vehicle for gold extraction from its ores. Toward this end, brief discussions of the various elements important to this process are presented here. Topics covered in this chapter include a brief history of the process; basic chemical reactions responsible for the process ; characteristics of ores amenable to heap leaching; location of the greatest concentration of heap leach projects in the U.S.; heap leach components, methods, regulatory/permitting considerations; and economic considerations. Most of these subjects are treated at much greater length in subsequent chapters. Thus, this chapter serves as a summary for those which follow, in addition to providing the reader with a feeling for those topics which may be of most immediate interest. 1.1.1 History of the Process Modern Day Precious metal heap leaching technology has developed over the past decade, although the principles of heap leaching per se, as well as those of gold extraction through cyanidation have a long history (see discussion below). However, it is in the past 10 years that heap leaching has developed into an efficient method of treating oxidized gold and silver ores. It has proven to be both an efficient way to extract precious metals from small, shallow deposits, as well as an attractive way to treat large, low- grade, disseminated deposits. Heap leaching has several advantages compared to conventional milling (i .e., crushing, grinding, and agitation leaching). In general, these advantages include simplicity, lower capital and operating costs, shorter start-up times, and less intensive environmental regulatory concerns. A possible disadvantage of currently existing heap leach technology is a potentially lower percentage of metal extraction being obtained from the ore than would be the case with conventional milling (Potter, 1981; Hiskey, 1985; and Thorstad, 1987) The actual principle of heap leaching has a long history as inferred previously. For example, mines in Hungary recycled copper-bearing solutions through waste heaps in the mid-sixteenth century (Hiskey, 1985), and Spanish miners percolated acid solutions through large heaps of oxide copper ore on the banks of the Rio Tinto around 1752. By 1900, leaching operations were employing such techniques as leach/rest cycles to maximize copper recovery (Taylor and Whelan, 1942; Thorstad, 1987). Copper dump leaching is currently

INTRODUCTION Perspective The phrase "minerala resource appraisal" is widely and loosely used to refer to any quantitative description of a naturally occurring source of fuels, metals, or nonmetals. This leads to confusion when mineral resources are so conceived, for the term refers generically to information on stocks-mineral endowment, resources, reserves, and potential supply-that differ in ways that are important in economic analysis. Mineral resource and other stock measures- these are not flows, e.g., the supply of minerals-have precise technical meanings, which are presented in this paper. Quotation marks are used to separate the nontechnical use of mineral resource from the technical. The term appraisal also leads to some con- fusion because it too is loosely used. When an appraisal employs probability and statistical methods, the appropriate term is estimationb, not appraisal or assessment. This paper presents a conceptual framework or mineral resource information which renders technical, or well defined, relationships of mineral endowment to physical attributes of the earth's crust and earth processes, as distinct from economic values, and identifies estimation approaches that lead to different economic measures of stocks and flows. An important result of this approach is the distinction between the relevance of mineral resource information to economic and policy issues about potential sup- ply (stocks) and dynamic supply (flows across time). With regard to policy analysis, this paper recognizes that mineral resource information has a cost as well as an imputed value. Such a treatment implies that there is an optimum state of resource ignorance, or enlightenment, for a given policy issue and that the relevant economic issue is the selection of that information strategy and appraisal methodology that is indicated by the optimum state. Until the initiation of the OPEC oil embargo, the demand for information on mineral re- sources and potential supply was limited to occasional studies commissioned by Congress or the President of the United States. In these, mineral and energy resources remained loosely de- scribed. When quantitative estimates were supplied, they were not rigorously made, and the estimates and the methodology accordingly escaped close scrutiny. Usually, neither the geo- logical nor economic bases for estimation were carefully described or critically examined. The imposition by OPEC nations of the embargo on oil caused a sudden change in the public and scientific demands for specific 'resource" appraisals, especially of oil and of uranium. These

Operational and economic factors tend to favor the application of continuous processes in preference to batch processes in the majority of mineral processing applications. In this paper, the requirement for a Continuous Elution Process is established and the development of a large-scale pilot plant is described. It is based on a Continuous Elution apparatus which has a number of special features. These are the subject of various patent applications. The apparatus is suitable for adaptation to the AARL, Zadra and other methods of elution. The performance of the Atmospheric Continuous Elution System (ACE) is concluded to have significant advantages over the batch process.

The trend to higher solids paper coating and to neutral/alkaline papermaking is causing an above average growth in the use of calcium carbonate as both a paper coating and a paper filling pigment. These developments are expected to continue well into the 1990s. Thus, calcium carbonate will account for a somewhat larger percentage of total paper pigment volume. Nevertheless, overall growth in paper tonnage coupled with an increase in filler pigment percentages will create a demand for larger quantities of other pigments as well. Kaolin will continue to be the dominant paper pigment by far, with continued growth though at a somewhat slower rate than calcium carbonate.

Retrievability of emplaced nuclear waste from the geologic repository is a performance objective imposed by Federal Regulations. This requirement is designed to provide confidence in the Department of Energy's repository design by keeping the option of retrieval open if the engineered or natural systems prove inadequate for containment and long-term isolation of high-level nuclear waste. This paper presents a summary of current Nuclear Regulatory Commission Staff thinking on the design of the repository for retrieval, and level of retrievability demonstration that may be required during site characterization. However, this paper does not represent official U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission position on this topic.

Eminent Domain is the power of the government or municipality to take property for public use without the consent or acceptance of the owner. Typically the agency taking the property will make an offer on the property, hoping that the owner will immediately accept and allow work to begin. If a mutual resolution regarding the property value cannot be reached, however, the municipality will condemn the premises and institute a condemnation action in a court of law, which is when the problems begin. The power of the government to take the subject property is limited by the Federal and State constitutional duty to pay "just compensation" for the property.

A practical method is described for determining or checking whether underground supports such as props, posts and mechanized longwall supports have bearing areas of proper size in relation to the type of ground or floor strata on which they are standing, It is felt that this information provides an approach to eliminate, as much as possible, a potential grave source of error during the selection of roof supports. This would also affect the choice of costly mechanized longwall equipment where it is possible that the size of the bearing area is not as carefully determined as, for instance, the design strength of structural components.

In the previous work (1,2), initial developments in a novel tracing technique employing specifically prepared trace particiles were fully described. The synthetic tracers produced proved to represent coal particles in specific gravity based coal washing equipment in this work, a detection system has been developed that can detect the artificial tracers in the product or refuse part of the density-separating coal cleaning units and thus indicate the performance characteristics of the circuit. This system could not only be a simple, accurate, and inexpensive replacement for the usual time-consuming washability analysis, but it could also be used for diagnostic purposes in coal separatory devices.

Microwave power, used in conjunction with properly designed applicators, is an efficient and practical energy source for pre treating a wide range of mineral ores and concentrates. Novel processes which take advantage of the unique properties of rapid microwave excitation present many distinct advantages over other pretreatment methods. These include dramatically reduced costs and elimination of all or most of the toxic by-products. A capital and operating cost analysis is presented of EMR's microwave process for treatment of refractory gold ores and con­centrates based on the company's experience using both small and large scale pilot plants. Comparisons are presented between the microwave process and roasters, autoclaves and bio-oxidation.

The objectives for closure of a hard rock mine include minimizing long term environmental liability, attaining regulatory compliance, and maintaining geotechnical stability, while closing as cost-effectively as possible. Proper planning for closure should come during the feasibility study, design and permitting phases, and during operations as updates. The lack of a proper or updated closure plan can result in severe environmental and economic consequences. Effective mine closure is the result of a combination of innovative concepts, long-term commitments, and multi-party cooperation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss concepts, commitments, and cooperation as they relate to an effective closure plan.

Traditionally the lime industry is governed by market, location, and transportation. These factors also may act as obstacles to global market access. Lime manufacture responds to market opportunities by first focusing on location. Lime markets are diverse and widespread, and ubiquitous occurrences of limestone make development of a widespread industry possible. Lime’s low to moderate unit value restricts transporting it long distances. Other factors (including lime reactivity, dedicated container use and other liabilities) limit shipping lime far. In the past many small to medium size companies made lime for local use. Today the global aspect of the industry is ownership by few large companies producing lime for local consumption.

A 32-channel warning system for high working level, fan operation, and airlock-doors has been constructed. The working level monitors have a microcomputer for accumulating the pulses, converting to working level, and triggering an alarm at a variable set point and at one working level. The system also detects when underground fans lose power or air doors are open. The system can detect changes in air velocity which indicate surface fan failures or changes in the ventilation system. Using this alarm system, the ventilation engineer will be alerted prior to excessive levels of radon daughters being reached so corrective action can be taken.

Software developed to support World Wide Web (WWW) activities has the potential to improve and change the way exploration and mining data and in- formation is organised, presented, and processed. In this paper, we discuss the creation of interactive displays of complex three dimensional data for the mining industry.
