Commercial software programs are being utilized to create and maintain a mine subsidence database in conjunction with the U.S. Bureau of mines research on mine subsidence in Illinois. A three-year survey net of monitored structures in an Illinois subdivision was entered as textual information (attributes), on an existing AutoCAD drawing. These attributes can be optionally displayed on the corresponding drawing or extracted as a text file for import to a database program. The database program, dBASEIV, allows combinations of multiple database files for extensive querying capabilities. Subsurface database files can be merged with surface database files to enhance the effectiveness of surface response analyses in mine subsidence research. The geographic information system (GIS), pcARC/INFO, was chosen to integrate existing AutoCAD drawings and dBASEIV database files into a relational database with a graphical representation. The relational database allows users to update either the graphical representation or the database, with the changes being reflected automatically in its alternate format. The increased capacity, through use of a GIS, to query combinations of database files and have the results reflected graphically has significant potential for expediting mine subsidence research.

Coal has been mined in the Kailuan mining area for more than 130 years. The remaining reserves consist of, in large part, coals that would have been considered economically unminable or technically not feasible by the previous generations. Some of the current operations have to resort to overmining because the lower seams had been extracted in the past. This paper deals with the feasibility and proper layout of mining roadways of overmining carried out in the No. 5 seam of Qianjiaying coal mine of Kailuan mining area using numerical and physical simulation. FLAC2D was used to investigate the characteristics of stress and displacement in the overburden after extraction of the lower seams. It also analyzed the proper layouts of gateroads in the upper seams, i.e. locating them in the stress-relief zone of the gob so that their stability can be easily maintained. In addition, a two-dimensional physical model was constructed for investigation of damages to the upper seams due to mining of the lower seams. Finally, based on the results of investigations, proper gateroads layout was designed and successful extraction was implemented for panel 1357 in the No.5 seam.

The directions for ventilation control are often given in linguistic styles such as "if the airflow rate measured is small, a high value of rotation on a local fan should be chosen." In order to control the underground climate using a computer instead of a human being, both the reliability of data values measured underground and the application of human recognition of data values are required. The efficiency of data transmission is dependent on a method of checking a signal which is changed by mixing noises resulting from cases of electrical and mechanical damage to cables. In the study, fuzzy reasoning is adopted to choose a checking method for underground conditions from a normally operating state to an emergency. Fuzzy reasoning is applied to control airflow rate under the linguistic control rules given. It is shown that an effective series of linguistic control rules derived by fuzzy-sets theory is available in ventilation control when used in conjunction with an air velocity sensor, a computer and a local fan with thyristor control. Moreover, a system to make an optimum series of linguistic control rules for ventilation control is introduced.

Digital photography combined with three dimensional models of topography, mining operations and restoration plans can lead to extremely realistic images and animations of the current and future states of a mine or quarry. The amount of work and the time required for the successful modeling of a mine and its restoration plan are surprisingly low nowadays. All this means that the visual impact of mining and quarrying operations can be easily assessed using common computer hardware and some dedicated software packages. LAVA Mining and Quarrying SA is a company committed to strive continuously for the highest possible environment protection at the company?s quarries. The pozzolanic rock quarry located at Xylokeratia is one of the company?s quarries on the island of Milos and the subject of the study presented in this paper. A thorough restoration plan of the Xylokeratia quarry is being completed by the company. For its purposes, a complete visual impact assessment study was performed at the Department of Geotechnology and Environmental Engineering of the Technological Education Institute of Western Macedonia. The procedures used in this study and the produced visual results are presented in this paper.

"There have been about 42 fatalities in underground coal mines between 1984 and 2015 where the victim was struck, pinned, or run over by a mobile machine (MM) such as a shuttle car, scoop, or battery hauler. MSHA has issued a proposed rule requiring proximity detection systems (PDS) on MMs in an effort to prevent future fatalities. Currently approved PDSs use electromagnetic (EM) technology to detect the presence of a miner and impose machine controls to prevent contact. The disadvantages of an EM-based PDS on MMs include the need for a miner-wearable component (MWC), environmental interferences, EM interferences from other devices, and low localization range and accuracy. NIOSH researchers are investigating alternate technologies that could improve the capabilities of the current PDSs. Many technologies were reviewed, and NIOSH researchers identified RFID, LIDAR, RADAR, ultrasonic detection, and computer vision as candidates for PDS development. The performance characteristics of each technology and its applicability to an underground mining environment will be discussed, along with international developments and implementations, and the concept of sensor fusion. INTRODUCTION PDSs provide safety to mine workers by detecting their presence (and in some cases location) around a machine. These PDSs provide a warning zone, which triggers an alarm, and a stop zone, which halts the machine before it contacts the miner. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued a final rule requiring that PDSs be installed on all continuous mining machines (CMMs) on the working section, with the exception of full-faced machines, according to a phase-in schedule for newly manufactured and existing equipment [1]. The PDSs that were designed for CMMs have since been adapted to other mobile machines. Mobile machines include scoops, which are used as general utility vehicles, as well as coal hauling machines, such as shuttle cars, ram cars, and continuous haulage systems. MSHA has examined all accident reports from 1984 to 2014, and determined that 42 fatalities could have been prevented on mobile machines had a PDS been installed [2]. As such, MSHA issued a proposed rule that would require mobile machines on working sections (with the exception of longwall sections) to be equipped with a PDS. This rule would follow a phase-in schedule for newly manufactured and existing equipment. Currently available PDSs are based on electromagnetic (EM) technology. NIOSH researchers developed a shell-based magnetic flux density distribution model [3] for determining the position of a miner near a machine. A typical system would consist of four generators positioned around the perimeter of the machine. Each generator is a coil of insulated wire wrapped around a ferrite core. The magnetic field strength is proportional to the current running through the coil. Miners working on the section have an MWC, which is a transceiver that measures the field strength emitted by the generators and transmits a data packet over an RF link which contains the field strength reading to the PDS controller mounted on the machine. The magnetic field generators are pulsed sequentially such that the MWC can identify which generator’s field strength it is reading. This type of system utilizes the principle of magnetic flux density: the closer the MWC is to the field generators, the higher the field strength reading. Thus a miner’s presence can be determined once he gets too close to the machine, because his MWC will measure a magnetic flux density beyond a certain threshold. These thresholds are utilized on a per-generator basis to “shape” the fields for both warning and stop zones around a machine, as illustrated in Figure 1."

The recent increase in size of open-pit mining operations has resulted in major improvements in efficiency that are beneficial to the mining industry. Higher bench heights, larger diameter blast-holes, and more powerful explosives have played an important part in reducing mining costs. These measures have, however, resulted in increased energy concentrations in the blast area, which can result in severe backbreak problems for final pit walls. If backbreak is not controlled, a decrease in the overall pit slope angle will ultimately be necessary, and consequences, such as decreased recoverable ore reserves and increased waste-to-ore ratios, will result. Greater amounts of loose face rock will be produced, and planned safety berms will be less effective or nonexistent. Hazardous working conditions can also result. Remedial measures, such as scaling large areas and using wire mesh or other artificial support, are very expensive and difficult to implement. There must be a trade-off between the money saved by using larger blasts, and the time spent to maintain pit wall quality. The best approach is to control blasting effects so the inherent strength of pit walls is not destroyed. Presplit and trim blasting are two control blasting techniques used to accomplish this. Both techniques are designed to create a low explosive energy concentration per unit of wall area at the perimeter of the pit. Energy concentration of the main production blast must also be controlled to avoid damaging the final pit wall. A low-energy concentration at the final wall can be obtained by decoupling charges, decking charges, using less powerful explosives, decreasing blasthole diameters, and changing the burden and spacing. Rock properties-fragmentation and the final state of the pit wall-influence the success of a blast. The most important properties to consider are: in situ rock strength, and the nature, frequency, and orientation of structural features. Since these variables cannot be controlled, they must be evaluated by suitable field tests, and then a control blast can be designed using controllable variables, such as spacing, burden, and hole diameter, so the blast will be successful for appropriate rock conditions. One main thrust of this article is to show how control blasts can be successfully designed for larger hole sizes, up to 381-mm-diam. While efforts to produce a good control blast in shovel/truck pits have been ongoing for some time, recent use of a modified presplit technique in dragline operations has helped reduce water problems, improve safety, and increase dragline productivity in a number of surface coal mines. This article presents examples on designing and using presplit and trim blasting for large hole operations in both shovel/truck and dragline mines. Presplit Blasting As introduction to presplit blasting, Fig. 1 illustrates a typical presplit blast layout using 102 mm-diam presplit holes for 381¬mm-diam production holes. For this type of blast, presplit holes would normally be drilled first, ahead of main production holes. The choice can then be made between loading and firing the presplit line or infilling the main blast. In the latter case, the presplit line would be fired instantaneously 100-150 milliseconds before the main blast. As shown in the figure, the presplit line is formed ahead of the main

INTRODUCTION The placement of concrete by means of pumping is one of the fastest growing practices in the construction industry and is widely used in mining applications. In¬troduced in the United States in 1933, this method has been adapted to many aspects of the industry, especially where space for equipment is either limited or inaccessi¬ble. Concrete pumping offers many advantages over other methods of placement. Using pumping equipment, the concrete mixture can be transported in a single operation from a central mixing site to numerous forms in many remote locations, eliminating the need for rehandling the mixture and reducing the labor costs to a minimum. Pressurized pumping provides an extra mix¬ing and blending step, resulting in concrete of improved uniformity and greater density. In turn, this produces high compressive strength and increased durability. Various placement defects can be reduced or pre¬vented by pumping. The steady and even flow of the concrete minimizes the form distortion and delays caused by vibration problems that are common to fast dumping of the concrete mixes. Segregation, planes of weakness, bleeding, and surface faults are diminished considerably. Perhaps the greatest advantages of concrete pump¬ing are the distances and volumes that can be handled. Depending upon the equipment used, pumping rates of from 8 to 115 m'j/h (10 to 150 cu yd per hr) can be achieved, with a horizontal range of up to 460 m (1500 ft) and a vertical range of up to 140 m (450 ft). Theoretically, almost any concrete mixture could be pumped. However, consistency is an important consid¬eration for efficient operation. Mixes that are too wet, too dry, too hard, or poorly graded can cause difficulties that increase the costs. Similarly, mixes containing aggregate material that is over the maximum size or that is porous and highly absorptive can also result in diffi¬culties and increased costs. For the best efficiency, the mix formulation must have a well-graded sand and aggregate combination, with enough fines to provide flowability. If additional water is required for pumping, additional cement must be used to meet the design criteria of the structure. Each pump manufacturer can provide recommended mix formulations for the specific equipment furnished. Since the 1950s, many improvements have been made in pumping technology. Originally, only rigid steel pipe of 168 to 245 mm (6.625 to 9.625 in.) diam was used; today, both rigid steel pipe and flexible conduit are available in diameters of from 76 to 203 mm (3.0 to 8.0 in.). Improved pumps have been developed, and the introduction of power-coordinated booms has in¬creased the versatility of concrete pumping. The older and more conventional placement methods can no longer compete with the flexibility, efficiency, and econ¬omy of the pumping method, and continued research and development can only improve the system and expand its use throughout the mining industry. PUMPING EQUIPMENT The three major types of concrete pumping units currently available are the piston pumps, the pneumatic pumps, and the squeeze-type pumps. Table I provides a comparison of capacities, horizontal ranges, and vertical ranges for pumps of all three types. With the acquisition of Tamrock, Sandvik has further increased its interests in the mining industry. Sandvik Rock Tools, a familiar name in the mining industry, is one of the world's leading suppliers of rock-drilling tools. And Tamrock is one of the world's leading suppliers of drilling machinery, loaders and equipment for rock-excavation operations. Sandvik believes that the two companies combined offer customers "maximum productivity through total system solutions, including machinery, service and tools." In 1997, Tamrock posted sales of US$940 million (SEK 7.5 billion). In addition to its expertise in drilling tools and equipment, Sandvik is supported by its collective resources in specialty steel and cemented carbide. These resources include extensive research and development capabilities, with annual investments in R&D now at about US$150 million. As a result of the R&D programs, internal expansion and acquisitions, the company has nearly doubled in size during the past four years. From 1994 to 1997, nearly US$1 billion was invested in internal growth and another US$825 million has gone towards acquisitions. Return on net assets is now 22% annually. INTRODUCTION Proliferation and enhanced synthesis of collagen by pulmonary fibroblasts have been shown to be key steps in the development of chronic silicosis (Goldstein and Fine, 1986). The regulation of lung fibroblast proliferation by cytokines released from alveolar macrophages may be an important pathogenetic mechanism in the development of the fibrotic process (Kelley, 1990). One cytokine, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), promotes fibroblast proliferation by inducing the movement of quiescent (Go) cells into the C1 phase of the cell cycle (Chen and Rabinovitch, 1989). Others regulate the rate of transition of fibroblasts from Gl into the S phase (Leof et al., 1982). These two classes of cytokines have been termed, respectively, competence and progression factors. One approach used to examine the release of cytokines from macrophages is the fibroblast proliferation assay in which fibroblasts are exposed to culture supernatants from macrophages exposed to various stimuli. In most of these assays, the supernatant contains fetal calf serum which provides the competence factor(s) necessary to facilitate the proliferation of fibroblasts (Bitterman et al., 1982; Bitterman et al., 1983; Elias et al., 1988). Recently, a fibroblast proliferation assay using plateletpoor plasma (lacking competence factor(s)) as a substitute for fetal calf serum has been described (Kuman et al., 1988; Bauman et al., 1990). In this assay, the release of a competence-inducing PDGF-like growth factor from rat and human macrophages can be distinguished from other cytokines that act as progression factors. In order to obtain more consistent results and with the ultimate goal to be able to discriminate between the effects of competence factors as opposed to progression factors, we have conducted experiments to determine the appropriate concentrations of plasma and PDGF required for imparting competence in the fibroblast proliferation assay. We tested lung fibroblast cells obtained from explants of rat lung tissue and also a fetal human lung fibroblast cell line obtained from American Tissue Culture Collection (ATCC153). MATERIALS AND METHODS Fibroblasts Specific pathogen-free, male Sprague-Dawley rats were use in some studies. Animals were given a lethal intraperitoneal dose of sodium pentobarbital. Fibroblasts were isolated by chopping the lung in enzymes that digest the connective tissue but liberate lung cells for further study (Rabovsky et al., 1989). After digestion, the remaining lung tissue suspension was filtered through two layers of sterile gauze and centrifuged to recover lung fibroblasts. These were resuspended in culture medium that contained 10% fetal calf serum and distributed to culture plates for growth. In other experiments, a human fetal lung fibroblast cell line, obtained from American Type Culture Collection, Rockville, MD, 20852, was used instead of rat lung fibroblasts. In these cases, a 1 ml ampule containing human fetal fibroblasts was plated into a tissue culture flask containing medium plus 10% fetal calf serum. For both types of fibroblasts, culture medium was changed 3 times per week and cultures were incubated at 37°C until confluent. Harvested rat and human lung fibroblasts were quantified using an electronic cell counter equipped with a cell sizing attachment (Coulter Electronics, Inc., Hialeah, Florida). Tritiated Thymidine Incorporation The basic procedural outline of Kumar et al. (1988) was used with modifications to evaluate tritiated thymidine incorporation into fibroblast DNA following exposure to PDGF and plasma. Both rat and human lung fibroblasts were plated at 50,000 cells/ml at a density of 250,000 cells/25cm2 culture plate. Cells were quiesced for 4 days with 2% rat plasma. As the assay was refined, fibroblasts were quiesced in plasma-free media for 48 hrs, since the mitogenic activity of 2% plasma was variable. Test medium was applied for a period of 6 hrs, followed by a 24 hr tritiated thymidine (lµCi/ml) labelling period in plasma-free media. Medium alone was used as a negative control and media with 10 or 20% fetal calf serum was used as the positive control for rat and human fibroblasts, respectively. Cell Quantification and Measurement of Mitogenesis Twenty-four hours after the addition of tritiated thymidine, the fibroblasts were washed with 5ml of fresh serum-free media, centrifuged and resuspended in phosphate-buffered saline. The cells were dissolved in 0.5m1 of O.1N NaOH and radioactivity determined in a beta counter. Incorporation of trititaed thymidine as an index of DNA synthesis was expressed as DPM/fibroblast. The mining executive works in a cyclical industry. His employment is subject to the vagaries of the marketplace. Boom and bust has always been the industry's story. "Big oil" failed in its mining effort. This left emotional and financial scars on many mining families. One must remember that mining executives always play a high-stakes game. Given the cyclical nature of the mining industry, mining executives need to take care of their own financial security. The mining executive that does not plan for his financial security in this cyclical business is playing Russian Roulette with his future. Take a look at those people who have reached their later years with the mining industry. One usually finds three categories of people. Those few in the first group have been fortunate enough to have worked for one company. They have survived the winnowing process of cyclicality, political problems, and takeovers. They have reached normal retirement age. For them, the retirement years are usually comfortable. People in the second group have worked for those same mining companies. But these people have been forced out by early retirement. Or they have been laid off for cyclical, takeover, or political reasons. The third group includes those who have held many positions in the mining industry. Probably not until their later years are they fully vested, if at all, in a pension program. The first small group, then, is the exception. The others, unless they have taken care of their financial security, are doomed to later years of financial problems, stress, and unhappiness. Too late in life, many realize the harsh realities of failure to plan and implement a personal financial program. Mining executives go to some of the world's leading mining schools, to learn how to make money. The curriculum is technically strong. Most mining graduates are familiar with the intricacies of discounted cash flow, present value, and the Hoskold formula. But few of these same mining schools require courses on personal financial planning. Such courses could give mining students a realistic foundation and the mechanisms with which to cope with their cyclical profession. An executive has only three sources of money. He can make money at work. He can put his money to work. Or he can get money from charities, such as government programs. Of these three sources of money, money at work has the best chance of providing financial security in later years. The mining executive must think of the day when he will be too old to work and contribute to the market place. At this point, the quantity and quality of his investments will determine whether his later years will be secure. Along with the Mining Engineering Handbook, two key books should be included in the mining executive's library. These are Venita Van Caspel's The Power of Money Dynamics and Benjamin J. Stein's Financial Passages. These books contain the basic concepts of personal financial planning so critical to an individual's financial survival. Venita points out the simple formula that is the key to financial independence: Time + Money + American Free Enterprise (Rate of Return) = Opportunity to Become Financially Independent Chart 1 shows that this is not a trite formula. The chart shows the dramatic effects of compounding over time. The chart also shows at various yields what a $2000 a year Individual Retirement Account (IRA) contribution will accumulate. Chart 1 (from Money magazine) is based on the future value of an ordinary annuity. It shows that the key to amassing a small fortune by the time a person reaches his 50s is starting to save methodically in his 20s. This, coupled with the highest yields consistent with safety of principal will ensure financial security. There are significant effects from compounding money over time. Every year the decision is put off to save for later years will cost a person dearly by the time he reaches his 50s. For example, consider the decision to put off for one year a $2000 IRA investment at a 12% return. Starting it at age 31 instead of 30 will cost the executive almost $100,000 by age 65. What if the executive waits until age 35 to get started with his $2000 a year investment? He will then lose nearly $400,000 by age 65. Stated another way, the executive costs himself this $400,000 simply because he did not invest $167 a month for five years. $167 a month - that's less than an inexpensive second car payment. This $400,000 pool of money could provide the executive a $40,000 a year income at age 65, assuming a 10% return on invest-

INTRODUCTION The radiological health significance of thorium-230 stems from its tendency to separate from the uranium238 parent, concentrate in bone tissues, and to subsequently irradiate the radiosensitive tissues lining the bone surfaces and the bone marrow. Indeed, thorium-230 may be the radionuclide which contributes the major dose following intake of natural uranium (Hartley and Pasternack 1979). This is reflected by the most recent recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, which specify the limits shown in Table I for the annual intake of radionuclides by occupationally exposed workers (ICRP 1979). Because of the greater toxicity and different metabolism of thorium-230, monitoring only for uranium-238 does not satisfactorily identify the possible hazard from thorium-230 nor does it provide any real indication of the metabolism or biodynamics of these two radionuclides. Thorium-230 has a half-life of 80,000 years and can be detected by direct counting of the alpha particles or photons emitted during its transformation to radium-226. The 4.69 and 4.62 MeV alpha particles are distinctive and specific indicators of thorium-230 and are emitted with abundances of 76% and 24%, respectively. The principal photon, a 68 keV gamma ray, is emitted in only 0.37% of the transformations and is, therefore, not useful for low level measurements. The other photons emitted have even lower yields, or, in the case of radium L x-rays, are non-specific and, hence, useless for quantification. High sensitivity measurements of thorium-230 currently are usually accomplished by wet washing of the sample substrate, quantitative chemical separation of thorium atoms, and, finally, direct measurement of the alpha particles emitted from a massless deposition. This procedure is complicated, expensive, and time-consuming, and subject to interferences from uranium, other actinides, and other thorium isotopes. Recently, the feasibility of low-level measurement of thorium-230 by neutron activation analysis (NAA) was demonstrated (Kathren, Desrosiers and Church 1980). Two principal variations of the NAA method were used in this study: 1) instrumental NAA technique and 2) post-irradiation radiochemical separations (RCS). Instrumental NAA procedure is a nondestrucive technique which is preferred because of its simplicity. The procedure is as follows: after irradiation with a known neutron fluence, the samples are transferred to a clean container and quantitative gamma spectroscopy performed. With the radiochemical separations procedure, the sample is initially treated as in the instrumental technique. However, after irradiation, a known amount of "carrier" is added to the sample. The element(s) of interest are then separated from the rest of the matrix by distillation, precipitation and extraction techniques. The resulting sample, now free of interferring elements, is then ready for gamma-ray analysis. The use of a "carrier" is to determine the loss of element-of-interest during the chemical separations process. The neutron activation cross section of thorium-230 has an epicadmium resonance value of 1,010 barns (Mughahghab and Garber 1976) and a thermal neutron cross section of 23 barns. The 25.52 hr thorium-231 produced releases two photons of significance: an 84 keV complex, (6.5% yield) and 25.6 keV (15% yield) (Lederer and Shirley 1978). The 84 keV complex is particularly useful for quantification since neither natural uranium, thorium, their daughters, or activation products emit photons in this region. However, the higher yield of the 25.6 keV photon may result in increased sensitivity if there are no other photons of similar energy emitted by other radionuclides in the sample. PRELIMINARY STUDIES Thorium-230 standard stock solution was prepared from a pure sample of the oxide purchased from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. From this stock solution a series of samples were prepared for irradiation in the TRIGA Mark I reactor at Reed College. Various dilutions were prepared as well as thorium-230 spiked urine samples. Irradiation times varied from 1 to 54 minutes in a neutron fluence rate of 1.84 x 1012 n/ cu m-sec. The neutron spectrum was abundant in thermal neutrons, having a Cd ratio of approximately 10. Treated urine samples were also analyzed by the NAA instrumental method. Analysis of untreated urine samples was not possible due to the high background

INTRODUCTION Dynamic (seismic or microseismic) methods of determining the stability of structures in rock are based on detecting and analyzing the characteristics of seismic energy that has originated from or traveled through the rock mass. This seismic energy can be in the form of naturally occurring rock noise energy resulting from structural adjustments within the rock or can be introduced into the structure by physical means, such as by blasting or impact. In either case, the seismic energy radiating through the rock mass can be detected using standard equipment and can be analyzed by established techniques to reveal a wide variety of information concerning the condition and stability of the rock mass through which the energy has traveled. In the following sections, the basic instrumentation required for seismic and microseismic studies is described, and some of the presently used applications of these methods are discussed to exemplify the state of the art. INSTRUMENTATION Seismic disturbances in a rock structure generate two types of seismic wave radiation, body waves and sometimes surface waves, which radiate outward in all direc¬tions from the source of the disturbance. Underground mining applications are generally concerned only with discerning the characteristics of the resulting body waves, i.e., the compressional (p-wave) and the shear (s-wave) energy. As these two forms of energy travel through the rock structure, the particles of the rock mass are caused to vibrate, and the vibration character¬istics resulting from each of the two types of wave are distinct. Some important differences are: 1) Compressional and shear waves travel at different velocities through the rock structure. 2) The frequency at which each wave causes particles to vibrate is different, and may range from about 50 to 100 000 Hz. 3) The amplitude or energy level of each wave is different, with the shear energy usually being the greatest. These differences form the basis for equipment se¬lection for individual studies and for modern data analysis techniques. The following sections describe the basic equipment necessary to detect and record seismic wave energy data and show several examples of analysis procedures and how these procedures have been used. In principle, seismic equipment is very simple. It consists of a geophone (or geophones) to detect the seismic energy vibration and convert that vibration to an electric signal, an amplification system to increase the level of that signal, and a means of monitoring and/or recording the signals detected. Fig. 1 is a block diagram of a typical system. The following sections offer a very brief discussion of system components and their individual functions. A more complete discussion is given by Blake, Leighton, and Duvall (1974). Geophones The function of the geophone is to detect the vibrations caused by the passing of the seismic wave energy and to convert that vibration into an electrical signal that displays both the amplitude and frequency characteristics of the vibration. Particle motion or vibration can be quantified and measured by measuring displacement, velocity, or acceleration of the particles. Thus, there are three types of geophones: displacement gages, velocity gages, and accelerometers. The choice of gage depends on the characteristic frequencies of the seismic energy to be monitored and the sensitivities of each type of geophone. In general, displacement gages are used for low-frequency monitoring (periods to 1.0 Hz), velocity gages for medium-frequency monitoring (1.0 to 250 Hz), and accelerometers for high-frequency monitoring (250 to 10 000+ Hz). Experience has shown that in underground studies, the choice of which gage to use lies between velocity gages and accelerometers. An easy, accurate method for selection of gage type is discussed by Blake, Leighton, and Duvall (1974). Once the type of geophone has been selected for use, it must be properly installed, and in the installation procedure the most important step is insuring that the gage is firmly attached to a competent portion of the rock structure. Poorly mounted geophones may entirely fail to recognize low-level seismic signals and will distort the information from signals they do see. Amplifiers Seismic events associated with mine structures occur over a very broad range of energy which results in a broad range of geophone output levels. In general, geophone output levels occur in the microvolt to low milli-volt range, and it is necessary to amplify these signals in order to drive recording or monitoring equipment. With the advent of faster micro-processors, the use of numerical methods to simulate complex fluid dynamic phenomena in three dimensions for use in design has become prevalent in the automotive, and turbo-machinery industries. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method divides the region of interest into small control volumes which form the mesh representing the physical characteristics of the problem, and uses the finite volume method to intergrate the equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and species over each control volume. Recent developments in CFD software expedite mesh generation, and enable the use of unstructured grids, comprised of tetrahedral volumes in three dimensions and triangular areas in two. CFD more accurately represents complex geometries and allows for relative movement of meshes enabling simulation of multiple moving bodies. 'ibis paper presents two examples of how CFD simulation can be used to assess mine and tunnel ventilation problems formerly addressed by application of analytical solutions which were developed assuming ideal incompressible conditions. CFD simulation is used to evaluate the impact of varying the airflow in a descentionally ventilated airway on the layering along the roof of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire. Control of the smoke layer is required to enable safe egress from the vehicle, particularly if the vehicle is for personnel transport, and to ensure control of the fire contaminants throughout the ventilation system. The airflow required to prevent layering against the ventilation direction, calculated from the Bakke and Leach relations (Bakke and Leach, 1962), is compared with the CFD simulation results. An evaluation of the pressures, generated as a vehicle enters a tunnel portal, using CFD simulation, is also presented for unflared and flared portal configurations. These simulation results are compared with predictions derived using an analytical method which assumes one-dimensional and incompressible flow. Results of the CFD simulation are presented in an animated video format. SIMULATION OF BACKLAYERING In designing a ventilation system for a transit tunnel, the ability of the ventilating air to control and prevent backlayering of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire is of prime concern. The buoyant nature of hot smoke causes it to rise relative to the colder, fresh air provided by the ventilation system. If the vehicle fire occurs in a descentionally ventilated tunnel, the smoke may tend to move upgrade in a layer above the incoming ventilation airflow. The layer may become thick enough to engulf a substatntial part of the tunnel cross-section upgrade of the incident that comprises the evacuation route. This effect is termed "backlayering' and it is similar to the development of methane layers in mines for which most studies related to backlayering have been done. Prediction Techniques Analytical A number of studies have been conducted (Bakke and Leach, 1962) to define the characteristics of this phenomena and as a result have produced relations which are used both in the mine and transit ventilation fields to define the air velocities required to control layering. In the transit industry the air velocity required to prevent the backlayering phenomena from occuring during a vehicle fire is called the "critical velocity" (Associated Engineers, 1975) and is dependent upon a number of factors: tunnel height, cross-sectional area and grade; ambient air temperature and density; and the heat release rate of the fire. Common practice in transit ventilation design is to provide an airflow which meets or exceeds the critical velocity. In order to determine whether or not the critical velocity can be achieved with a particular ventilation system, a one-dimensional simulation of the tunnel network is typically performed using programs such as the Subway Environment Simulation program (SES) originally developed in the late 1970's (Associated Engineers, 1980). The results obtained from SES are compared to the critical velocity to determine the adequacy of the ventilation system. Computational Fluid Dynamics For the backlayering simulations, a commercial CFD code which has been used successfully in a wide variety of engineering applications, was used. It provides numerous options for modeling laminar and turbulent flows, multiple turbulence models, definition of multiple species and chemical reactions between them, a variety of boundary conditions (including constant pressure and constant velocity inlets) and the ability to apply user-defined FORTRAN subroutines. It includes the ability to model conductive, convective, and radiative heat transfer. FLUENT also permits the use of "body-fitted coordinates" to match the computational mesh or grid to complex real-world geometries. Computational Fluid Dynamics Model The model developed to simulate the backlayering phenomena is comprised of an airway of rectangular cross-section, 4 meters wide, 4.5 meters high, and 200 meters long. Rare earth elements (REEs) have many critical uses in advanced technology and the lack of a reliable domestic supply has been identified by the US DOE as a vulnerability to US economic security. Our research focuses on developing an economical process for extracting REEs from coal fly ash and power plant wastewater sludge by coupling a hydrothermal extraction process with the engineering of a ligand-associated media for concentrating REEs from the extraction liquid. Ash samples have been collected from two Detroit-area Power plants that burn 100% low sulfur coal (Trenton Channel) or fuel blends of 75% low sulfur coal and 25% high sulfur coal or 70% low sulfur coal, 15% high sulfur coal, and 15% petcoek (Monroe Power Plant). Ash samples are then subjected to hydrothermal conditions from 100-350 °C for 1-24 h at Los Alamos National Laboratory and leachate concentrations are measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and compared to hydrofluoric acid digestion results. Experiments designed to aid in ligand selection and loading optimization show that di-(2-ethylhexyl)methanediphosphonic acid (H2DEH or DIPEX™) can be successfully loaded to a commercially available swellable organically modified silica (SOMS) media. Preliminary results show that DIPEX-associated SOMS surface loading can exceed 4x on a mass/mass basis and in simplified sorption experiments with Nd solutions (~pH 2), the DIPEX-SOMS media can sorb >90 mg Nd per g of media. Recovery of the sorbed Nd with low pH solutions has had low efficiency with the high (4 g DIPEX/ g dry media); however, near complete recovery was achieved with lower surface loadings (0.05 g DIPEX/ g dry media). Column experiments are being conducted to evaluate the optimal ligand/media ratio for repeated use. Completive sorption with Fe and other major cations are also being evaluated.

The widespread and increasing use of electrical power for mechanized power has made a tremendous impact on the coal mining industry. It is probably the single most important factor influencing the productivity of a coal mine. In fact, as a part of a study of 62 coal mines in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, plus information that was obtained from other sources, it was possible to show a direct correlation between the rise in the use of electrical power and mine productivity, Figure 1. This increased power demand has not always been achieved through proper planning and a careful evaluation of all design parameters, many of which are not even recognized. The result has been increasing problems in power distribution and utilization establishing the need for scientific studies including considerable underground measurements. Because the cost of power for ton of coal produced is generally a relatively low value, inadequate attention is paid its distribution and utilization. Furthermore, a poor system of records and a lack of adequate measurements add further to a paucity of statistical evidence that would permit a rational analysis of overall power costs. However, the direct cost figure alone is highly deceptive; of much greater value is the indirect costs associated with the use (or misuse) of electrical power underground. Success in highly mechanized mining correlates directly with equipment utilization. Today's machines have tremendous potential capacities but profits are measured in terms of performance and not potential. Thus the reliability of electric motors is an extremely important factor for consideration and the effects of all parameters should be carefully evaluated. Thus while studies are continuing on the evaluation of primary and secondary mine electrical systems with interesting results, this paper will be limited to reporting on the results of a study of a specific motor application.

"INTRODUCTION Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (Anadarko) owns a region of oil shale properties acquired as part of the original Union Pacific Land Grant of the 1800’s in southern Wyoming. These holdings are greater than 2 million acres and occur throughout the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. One area was prioritized for further study by Anadarko Minerals called the Kinney Rim in the Washakie Basin due to low environmental impact, proximity to infrastructure, high ore grade, and low mining cost. The area is a low-overburden oil shale resource that can be developed using surface mining methods, processed by conventional surface retort, and placing waste rock disposal back on the bench for a design capacity of 10,000 barrel per day. The purpose of this papers is to present the results of environmental analysis and timeline, the mine plan, and surface ore processing to offer a resource-ready energy source.Mineral rights for the Kinney Rim area are owned by Anadarko, the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the State of Wyoming. Mining of oil shale for this study targets Anadarko owned mineral resources.GEOLOGY The study area is in the Green River and Washakie Basins in western Wyoming. The host geologic member is the Laney Oil Shale. Figure 2 illustrates the Laney shale within a generalized lithologic cross section.OIL SHALE LEASING The proposed Kinney Rim oil shale mining project is located in an area dominated by a 1 square mile checkerboard landownership pattern with every other section typically administered by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Anadarko. IBC Advanced Technologies, Inc. has developed ligands, ?amed SuperLig®, which have specific applications in the gold mdustry. These ligands use molecular recognition technology (MRT). One ligand has been developed to selectively recover gold and silver from tailings solutions and from pregnant Merrill-Crowe solutions. Another ligand removes free cyanide, _ th10cyanate, other cyanide species, as well as copper and other base metal cyanide complexes from leached gold-ore solutions. The development of these "species selective'' SuperLig® prod­ucts allows for the more efficient operation of gold recovery processes and opens up the possibility of the economic devel­opment of high-copper gold ores. The resulting gold eluate is a high grade and a high purity stream which will simplify the need for further refming. Engineered systems based on MRT consist of a few unit operations utilizing standard equipment and mate­rials of construction. The process is simple to operate, thereby lending itself to automated modular design, which is both eco­nomic to manufacture and to operate. Test results for the gold and cyanide-copper systems are presented in order to demonstrate the high selectivity and effi­ciency of MRT technology in recovering these species from solution. . In April 1964 the Bureau of Reclamation awarded the first contract for rapid machine excavation of a water conveyance tunnel . Since then the Bureau has excavated seven tunnels with a total length of over 190,000 feet utilizing rapid excavation tunneling machines. Tunnel bored diameters have varied from 9' 0" to 20' 10" (See Table #1) and tunnel lengths from 5,000 feet to 67,000 feet. Driver and cutter units varied from 43 rolling teeth and eight rolling discs mounted on a rotating head driven by five 200 HP 23,000 volt electric motors to 20 discs and one tricone unit mounted on a rotating head driven by two 100 HP 440 volt motors. All tunnels were driven with a laser beam guidance system governing both line and grade. Trailing conveyors and rail haulage systems were used to dispose of the excavated material. Approved Bureau of Mines diesel locomotive engines for waste trains were prevalent power sources supplemented by battery units on some projects. Sandstone, conglomerates, agglomerates, siltstone, shale, and granite were the geological formations encountered, with sandstone and shale the preponderant material . Tunnel support systems utilized were structural steel ribs; rock bolts and metal plates; and shotcrete, or combinations of these. Progress varied from 51-1/2 feet to 154 feet per working day for three shifts, depending on rock material and supports required. One contractor established a record rate of advance of over 400 feet in one day, 1,905 feet in one week, and 6,848 feet in one month. Such diversified experience in underground machine excavation methods presented an excellent opportunity to observe, analyze, and evaluate associated environmental health problems. Man is a short time resident of the planet Earth. He does not have the memory to fully comprehend just what is going on. His span of knowledge can be related to the life of the world to see that this is the case. A museum at Grand Canyon features a geologic clock that compresses Earth's age of 4.5 billion years into 24 hours. Man's estimation of the earth's age has changed radically in the past half century. In 1930, one prominent geologist asserted that the age of the Earth was ". . . at least 600 million years." Later, physicists used radioactive clocks to conclude that the Earth's age was 1.6 billion years. More recently, geologists have found rocks in northwestern Australia estimated to have formed 4.5 billion years ago. As we learn more about what is underfoot, the estimate of Earth's age might change again. The Grand Canyon's 24 hour clock shows that the dinosaurs were the dominant life form for 165 million years. Then an event occurred that wiped them out about 65 million years ago. The prevailing theory is that an asteroid struck the Earth and generated enough dust to wipe out the vegetation upon which most dinosaurs fed. During Earth's existence, there have been at least 12 such mass extinctions - the worldwide disappearance of diverse animal groups. On a planet that has been around for 4.5 billion years and that may continue to exist for another 4.5 billion, it seems reasonable to expect that further mass extinction's will occur. According the Grand Canyon's 24hour clock, the 165 million year reign of the dinosaurs amounted to about five minutes. On that 24 hour clock, the world has been dinosaur free for almost two minutes.
