This Bureau of Mines report describes how the reinforcement mechanisms of untensioned, full-column resin bolts were determined during one underground study. Both axial and transverse shear loadings were identified for two instrumented resin bolts that replaced standard resin bolts in an opera-ting room-and-pillar mining section. The strain responses of resin bolt steel cores to local axial and transverse shear loadings are described. This information was obtained from laboratory testing of resin bolts installations; it was also used to analyze the data from the underground test.

Legislation and Government Programs.-The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) held public hearings in early 1975 on proposed standards for exposure to inorganic arsenic. The findings obtained at the hearings will be considered to promulgate emission standards. Domestic Production.-Arsenic trioxide (As203) was produced domestically only at the Tacoma, Wash. copper smelter of ASARCO Incorporated. Production data cannot be published. Output rose 9% over that of 1974, shipments were less than half those of 1974, and stocks rose 31 %. Production of arsenic metal, begun by ASARCO in August 1974, continued in 1975.

Research workers from the Bureau of Mines and industry met with other government and industry representatives at the Mont Chateau Lodge, Morgantown, W. Va., on May 30-31, 1973, to discuss the current status of methane control in eastern U.S. coal mines. The opening remarks, the eight technical presentations, and the discussions of the members of a government-industry panel are published here for the benefit of those concerned with the control of methane in coal mines. In addition, an introduction has been added to present the background of work in this field.

This report describes methods of using sodium for reducing titanic chloride, developed as part of Bureau of Mines activities at Boulder City, Nev., to improve the extractive metallurgy of titanium. Theoretical indications pertaining to the major chemical reactions and possible side reactions of the process are compared with experimental observations. Low-temperature reduction equipment is described, in which titanic chloride was reduced with sodium at temperatures between 97.5° C., the melting point of sodium, and 200° C. Techniques employed in making reductions in ball-mill and high-surface sodium reactors are given.

"INTRODUCTION The Ruhr coal basin is estimated to cover an area of more than 1,000 square miles. Here, the total thickness of the coal bearing formation (Carboniferous) is 10,500 feet, and drilling-hole have revealed 92 coal beds with a total thickness of 262 feet. 6/ Beds pitch from 0 to 90 degrees and about 70 percent of the wartime production came from beds that pitched less than 30 decrees. 5/For example at the Minisiter Stein mine, there are 24 minable coal beds ranging from 80 centimeters. (2 ft., 7 1/2 in.) to 250 centimeters (8 2 1/2 in.). The vertical thickness of the measures is 1,000 meters (3,200 ft.), and at this mine the deposits are covered with 150 meters (500 ft.) of surface wash. The cross section (fig, 1) at Fritz mine; Hoesch, A.G., Essen, Ruhr, is characteristic, The mines have been developed and worked to vertical depths of 2,000 to 2,500 feet by vertical shafts; main-level intervals are 500 to 700 feet apart. Haulage roads are straight, driven in rock, and centered as nearly as practical between property boundaries. Levels are sectionalized by driving crosscuts at right angles to the main haulage road on 800- to 900-foot centers. The roads are the main transportation arteries for the use of trolley or Diesel locomotives. A plan of the sixth main level (fig. 2) at the Bruchstrasse mine; Gelsenkirchener A.G., Bochum, illustrates main-level development and,sectionalizing with crosscuts. The cross section in figure 3 is that of the fourth crosscut west at the same mine."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued the research role of the former US Bureau of Mines (USBM) to engineer techniques that will reduce the hazards in the mining workplace associated with coal bumps. Recent research focused on a longwall coal mine in Utah with overburden greater than 750 m (2,500 ft) containing several massive sandstone units. The primary field instrumentation at the site was three-dimensional, full waveform, autonomous microseismic arrays placed underground and on the surface in order to surround the active multi-panel longwall district. The purpose of these arrays was to help investigate the strata mechanics associated with the redistribution of stress and the associated gob formation of the longwall. Specifically, the seismic arrays were used to determine the timing and location of the failure in the strata surrounding the active mining. Overall 13,000 seismic events were detected and located with on-site processing during the five months the panel was being mined, including a magnitude (ML) 4.2 event. Of these, a smaller subset of 5,000 well-located events was selected during post-processing to form a consistent data set for analysis in this paper. From this data set, it was observed that the seismic events generally occurred in advance of the longwall face, both above and below the panel, consistent with failure of the strata in the forward stress abutment zone. Also, the occurrence of the ML 4.2 seismic event within 150-180 m (500-600 ft) of a deep cover longwall face with no associated bump caused a re-evaluation of the nature of the connection between seismic activity and coal bumps.

"INTRODUCTION Uncontrolled mine fires originating in exposed coal beds through the acts of careless or irresponsible persons present a serious threat to buildings, surface property, and the life and health of persons near the affected area. Apparently, the seriousness of such fires is not fully understood by property owners or those residing in the vicinity, as practically nothing has been done to alleviate conditions. In many instances, such fires have been active for several years before property owners or civic organizations have shown any interest toward having the fire extinguished. Recommendations by Bureau of Mines investigators in the interest of controlling such fires are seldom followed, as the Bureau cannot provide the funds for doing the work.Several uncontrolled and widespread fires are burning along the outcrop of coal beds and in underground abandoned mine workings within a 25-mile radius of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pa. If these fires are permitted to continue to burn unabated, the ultimate results may be far-reaching. Most of the outcrop fires investigated are believed to have originated from burning rubbish, forest fires, or workmen, hunters, or others building fires near the outcrop of ,the coal beds. In other instances, smoke and fumes have suddenly appeared in the vicinity of abandoned coal-mine openings, indicating that a fire has either burned its way along the outcrop of the coal bed or has traveled through the abandoned mine from another location. An underground or outcrop coal-mine fire will be very likely to continue to burn as long as an oxygen supply is present.; and, so far as is known, such fires do not stop burning automatically until virtually all combustible matter is consumed."

Table 37 and figure 13 show the number of fires and fire injuries for surface stone mines by state during 1990-2001. Table 37 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. In all, 96 fires occurred in 31 states and 1 fire occurred in Puerto Rico. Sixty-eight of the fires caused 67 injuries and 1 fatality (including 6 fires and 5 injuries involving contractors). The yearly average was eight fires and 5.6 injuries. The Ewhr value was 689 x 106 hr (Irr = 0.02), and the LWD value was 7,399. Indiana had the most fires (eight fires and four injuries), followed by Georgia (seven fires and seven injuries) and Pennsylvania (seven fires and five injuries). Of these states, Georgia had the highest injury risk rate value (Irr = 0.058). Table 38, partly illustrated in figure 14, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires and fire injuries show an increase during the second period followed by a decrease during most of the remaining periods. Employees' working hours increased during most of the periods. The In values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values. Tables 39-44 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 15 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 45 shows the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

"This paper is based data obtained by the Bureau of Mines from some of the principal mine operators in Pennsylvania, in the course of a study conducted in cooperation with the U. S. Forest Service, with regard to economies that might be effected in the selection storage, and preparations of timber particularly treatment with preservative to prolong its life.The Pennsylvania anthracite region, considered as a single mining district is by far the largest user of mine timber of any mining district, either coal or metal, in the United States, and the bituminous districts of Pennsylvania rank second. The present annual consumption of mine timber by the coal-mining industry of Pennsylvania probably exceeds 100,000,000 cubic feet annually.In 1919, Pennsylvania produced, in round figures, 145,300,000 tons of bituminous coal, 86,200,000 tons of anthracite, and 5,400,000 tons of iron ores. If it be assumed that the bituminous coal mines required 0.33 cubic feet, anthracite mines 0.7, and iron mines 0.9 cubic feet per ton mined the timber requirements were bituminous. 47,950,000; anthracite, 60,340,000; iron mines, 4,860,000 or a total of over 113,000,000 cubic feet.The average cost of round mine timber in the anthracite region in 1905, was, according to the U. S. Forest Service, 6.6 cents per cubic foot, and $15.00 per 1000 board feet for sawed timber. The present cost Las advanced to 27.5 cents per cubic foot for round timber, delivered to the mine, of which cost 57.4, represents freight charges."

Determine whether the total delay time in blasting may be safely increased beyond the currently permitted 0.5 s, without igniting a methane or methane-coal dust atmosphere and determine the minimum borehole spacing to avoid misfires. Approach At present, regulations limit the delay time used in short-delay blasting to a total of 0.5 s. Many in industry and government would like to see this total delay time increased to 1 5 to permit an increase in the number of different delays available for short delay blasting and an increase in the time between delay periods. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine whether the total elapsed delay time for blasting coal in underground mines could be safely expanded, with resulting improvements in productivity. The research was conducted at a surface mine in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Experimental shots were conducted in several pits, each of which had a 5-foot-high coal seam (Pitts-burg No.8) in a 50-foot highwall. The coal seam and a mobile gallery provided a good simulation of an underground coal face. The Bureau also examined the relationship between borehole spacing and misfires, to check on reports over the past few years that permissible explosives frequently misfire. These reports were not well documented, but were numerous enough to warrant investigation. Misfires of permissible explosives in an underground coal mine can be very hazardous; a burning cartridge of explosive may be ejected from a borehole and ignite the gas or dust in the mine, or a misfired cartridge in the muck pile may detonate during drilling and mucking operations, causing serious injuries.

The impact of mining activities on the economy in both 1983 and 1984 was minimal. The most recent available data on the gross domestic product (GDP) indicated a level of $1.6 billion in 1983.2 The estimated value for the production of cement, aragonite, and salt was about $17 million in that year, down from the estimated $20 million in 1982. No data are available on the economic impact of the large petroleum refinery at Freeport on Grand Bahama Island, but it represents the major mineral-related activity. Cement production remained at only a fraction of the 800,000 tons per year of plant capacity. The offshore search for hydrocarbons continued in 1984, and some companies were about to enter the third year of seismic and geological surveying around Andros and Grand Bahamas Islands. Getty Oil (Bahamas) Co. Inc.; Breoco Ltd., a subsidiary of REO Development Corp. of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Natomas Petroleum (Bahamas) Ltd. were the first companies to be awarded exploration licenses. These companies were committed to drilling at least one well before the end of the third exploration year. Other companies actively engaged in exploration included Exxon Corp., Atlantic Richfield Co. (ARCO), Chevron Oil Bahamas Ltd., and Esso Oil Bahamas Ltd. Geophysical Services Inc. (GSI) of Dallas, Texas, and Petroleum Services (Bahamas) Ltd. of Englewood, Colorado, ran another seismic survey line during 1984. This 1,533-mile line was in the Great Bahama Bank and Cay Sal Bank areas off the southeast Florida coast, and tied in with a 4,530-mile program GSI ran in 1981-82. These surveys were nonexclusive and publicly available through GSI.

As part of its goal to minimize the requirements for mineral commodities through conservation and substitution, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the resistance of alumina refractories to corrosion by alkali-containing slags that could result from burning of the abundant Western lignites in metallurgical operations. Static corrosion tests were performed at 1,000° to 1,350° C and dynamic tests were performed at 1,400° to 1,600° C to investigate the stability of refractory specimens in slag environments. In general, the degree of refractory attack increased with decreasing alumina content in the refractory and with increasing alkali content of the lignite ash. The parabolic kinetics observed in static tests suggested that a reaction product layer is formed through which ionic diffusion must occur to sustain the reaction with the refractory material. The linear kinetics observed in dynamic tests in high-viscosity slags indicated a shearing of the reaction product layer by viscous slags. The observed lesser attack of refractories by low-viscosity slags can be explained on this basis. Two 99-percent-alumina refractories and two 90-percent-alumina refractories formed an expanded protective layer with the more viscous slags but not with the less viscous slags. Corrosion of 90-percent-alumina refractories increased exponentially with temperature. In refractories with the same nominal alumina content, those that contain a combination of a-Al203 and mullite (3A1203?2Si02) have better corrosion resistance than those containing a combination of a-Al203, cristobalite (Si02 mineral), and mullite. In alkali environments (1,300 to 1,400° C), 90-to 99-percent-alumina refractories are recommended for use as furnace linings.

A tube-wall reactor with a Raney nickel catalyst deposited on the outer wall of the tube by flame spraying is effective in the practically complete conversion of 3H2+1CO synthesis gas to a high-Btu gas (methane) at an hourly space velocity of 7,000 volumes of gas (NTP) per hour per volume of annular volume. Partially reacted synthesis gas containing an appreciable amount of methane can also be treated in this reactor to increase the heating value to over 900 Btu per cubic foot. Excellent heat removal through the metal wall to a coolant and temperature control were obtained. The heat transfer co-efficient from the catalyst to the coolant was about 275 Btu per hour per square foot per ° F. Synthesis tests were conducted with tubes 1.2 inches in ad by 6 inches long, and 1.3 inches in od by 36 inches long. When operating at a synthesis gas rate of 100 to 120 scfh per square foot of catalyst-coated tube, catalyst life was long enough to realize a catalyst cost for the raw Raney nickel alloy of about 0.3 cent per 1,000 cubic feet of pipeline gas (900 to 950 Btu per scf). Gas recycling at ratios of 1:1 to 3:1 was effective in increasing conversion and in extending the life of the catalyst to about 16 weeks. In cost and in operating characteristics the tube-wall reactor compares favorably with the fluidized-bed and hot-gas-recycle reactor systems for the synthesis of high-Btu gas from H2+CO.

When explosions have occurred in mines where rock dust has been used to some extent, generally to a very limited extent, the press has immediately characterized those mines as "rock-dusted." To persons familiar with the method of rock-dusting, it is apparent that if rock-dusting is done properly, if all mine surfaces are rock-dusted to within at least 40 feet of the faces of rooms and entries, and if the incombustible content of the dust is more than 65 per cent, there is little likelihood that an explosion of coal-dust will occur. The report that an explosion has occurred in a "rock-dusted" mine immediately conveys to the mind of the alert safety advocate the information that the mine is inadequately rock-dusted or that either dust sampling of the rock-dusted surfaces has not been done or, if done, the mine has not been redusted with sufficient promptness. Rules for Collection of Samples Collection of dust samples is by no means intricate, but a few simple rules must be kept in mind if the results are to be dependable. A sample must represent the true average conditions of the dust in the section or zone in which it is taken, and therefore 'the point at which the sample is to be collected must be selected with care. During an explosion much if not all of the dust on the ribs, roof, timber, and road in the affected region is blown into the air; the sample, therefore, should contain all loose dust and material on: the surfaces to a depth of about 1 inch, if that amount is present. If there is considerable sand locally along the track, care must be taken not to include enough of this material to vitiate the sale and distort the results; however, if the sand is distributed throughout the region being sampled it should be included. Dust should not be collected from recesses in the ribs, such as hitches cut for timber, as the character of the dust in such places is often different from that on the ribs proper. Samples should not be collected at points where the dusting machine has been loaded or at a point where the machine has stopped and discharged for a longer period than at other points on the entry or in the rooms. In short, the sample must represent AVERAGE CONDITIONS, and if there is any doubt as to the character of the dust it is far better to have too much combustible matter than too much incombustible matter in the sample, as it is best to err on the side of safety if it is necessary to err.

To determine the relative permeability of the soil a series of percolation tests were performed at the three locations of interest at Lanse, i.e., 3C, 03A and strip bank, and KA and KB at Kato. Soil cores were removed to 2, 8, 16, 24 and 32 inch depths with the thin wall sampler tube, each core separated from the next by about fifteen feet. Then two-foot-long thin-wall tubes were inserted into the 2, 8, and 16 inch deep holes and three-foot long tubes were inserted into the 24 and 36 inch deep holes. Each tube was tamped down about one inch further to assure a bottom seal; the tubes were filled with water and the rate of fall was measured. The test is similar to those done for septic tank percolation studies 6; but is not quantitatively related to Darcy's coefficient of hydraulic conductivity because the water can flow in three dimensions from the bottom of the tube. The measurements are dependent on the length of test, since the rate of fall is a function of the head. Therefore, it should be noted that the 24 and 32 inch deep tubes should give faster percolation rates because of the one foot greater head. At locations 03A and 3C the data show a sharp decrease in percolation at increasing depth, Table XV. However, the percolation at 03A and 32 inch depth is much higher than at 3C (0.2 vs. 0.01 inches/hour); the fragipan layer must be deeper at the 3C location since this area does experience a perched water table. On the strip bank the rates of falling head are randomly variable, appearing to be as much dependent on the particular location of insertion as on depth of placement. For example, water drained from the 16 inch tube as fast as it was added, probably into a sub-surface cavity or crevice. At Kato the tubes were more difficult to place because of interference of tree roots. For this reason 2 inch deep tubes were not inserted. These short tests at Kato were inconclusive, varying extensively when the tubes were moved. Field permeability tests were also performed in two (previously described) eight-inch diameter permeater tubes at Lanse and one at Kato. Because the soil is confined inside the tube, hydraulic conductivity can be calculated according to Darcy's flow equation. The high values reported in Table XVI experienced when the tubes were rewetted from a dry surface condition, enable us to conclude that infiltration is faster than the saturated permeability of the soil. In contrast to the falling head percolation tests, these permeability results do not show a high variation between locations.

The notion of wayfinding, as conceptualized by planners, geographers, and psychologists, denotes the ability of an individual to move from one point to another through physical space. In order to achieve this movement, a person relies on a cognitive map of spatial representations [Passini 1984]. Which features of this cognitive mapping will be stressed depend, in part, on the researcher's perspective. A planner, for instance, would tend to emphasize the effect of physical structures on mobility. A psychologist, on the other hand, might focus on individual differences in how human minds encompass and represent physical space [Evans et al. 1984]. There is yet another dimension to wayfinding that needs consideration, and it rests upon the idea that reality, as experienced by human beings, is mediated: "[People] have preselected and preinterpreted this world by a series of commonsense constructs ... which help them find their bearings in their natural and socio-cultural environment and to come to terms with it" [Schutz 1967]. These "common sense constructs" are arrived at socially and constitute the agreed-upon schemas that guide people's everyday activities. According to this principle, cognition is governed by some nonlogical factors that reflect not only individual procedures but collective ones as well. These group strategies, which are shaped by shared rules and values, influence "the information gathered, the ways it is processed, the inferences that are drawn, the options that are being considered, and those that are finally chosen" [Etzioni 1992]. From this perspective, cognitive maps, rather than being individual-centered templates of environmental images [Rovine and Weisman 1989] or representations of spatial relationships [Evans 1980], are partially group-centered schematic processes. As such, they are subject to reinterpretation, revision, and outside intervention [Kaplan and Kaplan 1982]. As intermediaries between the environment and behavior, cognitive maps serve as bases for decision-making. Traditionally, it has been assumed that good maps facilitate correct decisions, which in turn leads to optimal performance during wayfinding [Hunt 1984]. Given the argument that there is a social (non¬cognitive) facet to cognitive mapping, however, this image of a cognitive map as some sort of static reference construct that motivates individual action is too narrow and mechanistic. If cognition involves less a knowledge of the environ¬ment than it does the process of "giving it meaning through imposing an order on it" [Rapoport 1976], then wayfinding behavior is not j ust a function of setting and individual differences, but is also a function of one's "normative-affective" structure [Etzioni 1992]. Rapoport [1976] used such an assumption as the base for a set of hypotheses about the connection between "external demands" and "organismic factors." This section contains a summary of our investigation of the soil conditions (type, porosity, moisture content, etc.) at the two sites (Lanse and Kato, Pennsylvania) selected for field testing of latex as a soil sealant. Other natural conditions such as rainfall, frostline, depth of the water table, etc., were also measured and recorded for possible later use in assessing the effect of the latex seal on the total environment. The numbered sites referred to throughout this report are shown on the maps of the Lanse and Kato sites (Figures 1 and 2). KA, RB and KC are positions at the Kato site - all other numbered positions refer to the Lanse site. Two other terms used throughout the report which should be explained are “horizon” and "profile". These are synonymous terms for soil layer, A horizon (or A profile) referring to topsoil and B horizon (or B profile) referring to subsoil. The properties that control the flow of water through the soil are of special interest because these will also govern the passage of a sealant into and through the soil. Normally the particle size distribution is a good measure of soil permeability, which is directly proportional to sand content and inversely proportional to silt and/or clay content. Tables I1 and I11 show the percentages of gravel or stones, sand, silt and clay of Lanse and Kato soil samples. According to the United States Department of Agriculture classification, the gravel is ,ignored and the residue separated into sand, silt, and clay fractions. Figures 4 and 5 indicate by means of the USDk soil texture triangle that the variability of composition of Lanse soil ranges from sandy loam in the creekbed to clay loam. The variation is even greater among soil samples from Kato. Porosity of soil, also known as percent voids, is another indication of how readily water will travel through soils. Soil density usually increases and porosity decreases with depth, and as expected, the porosity of the top soil at Kato, a forest, is exceptionally porous and open (see Table IV) The pore diameter and length of soil capillaries is extremely variable, and its distribution in the field is impossible to determine. In addition to the capillaries, soil also contains many macro cracks, crevices, and passages around stones and roots. All these affect the flow rate of water through soil. Poiseuille's law states that the rate of flow of a liquid through a narrow tube is proportional to the 4th power of the radius of the tube. Pore size normally decreases with depth and in soil containing appreciable amounts of silt and clay this is especially true. Thus, deeper soils should be less permeable and such was the case at Lanse and Kato.

Coal dust explosions are routinely conducted within the full-scale experimental mine at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory?s (PRL) Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) to meet the needs of numerous safety and health research programs. Many of these explosion tests over the years involved igniting different coal dust and limestone rock dust mixtures (up to 80% by volume rock dust). Following four more recent tests, floor dust samples have been collected and analyzed using the alcohol coking test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the results compared to estimate the flame travel.
