As part of its objective to expand the body of mineral information as a basis for new technology, the Bureau of Mines conducted research on the fundamental behavior exhibited by phosphate clay waste in settling ponds. A semiempirical equation used to describe the compaction of ceramic powders in a single-acting die was applied to aqueous phosphatic clay waste and attapulgite slurries. This equation, [*V = a1 e ?k1/P + a2e ? k2/P] was found to describe the compaction of an attapulgite gel and a phosphate slime gel by a moving screen. [*V] is the ratio of the compaction achieved at a given pressure, P, to the compaction achieved at a pres-sure sufficient to remove all space between particles. The constant al represents the fraction of compaction achieved at low pressure by rearrangement of floes to higher packing density, and a2 represents the fraction of compaction achieved at higher pressure resulting from removal of voids within floes. K1 and K2 are constants determined from the experimental data. Both the low-pressure and high-pressure compaction mechanisms were observed in the compaction of the clays. These two compaction mechanisms offer an explanation for the observation that impounded slimes initially dewater rapidly and then dewater at a much slower rate.

Applicability of the fluosilicate sintering process to recovering beryllium from beryl-spodumene concentrate analyzing 1.4 to 3.7 percent BeO (10 to 30 percent beryl) was investigated. The work was one phase of a Bureau of Mines research program undertaken to assess applicability of conventional processes and to devise new procedures for treating various potential beryllium feed materials. Beryllium recovery of about 70 percent in a product of 99-percent BeO grade was achieved in treating 3D-percent beryl concentrate. The process consisted of (1) sintering a briquetted charge of concentrate, soda ash, and sodium fluosilicate for 3 hours at 750° C.; (2) extracting the soluble beryllium by multiple stages of water leaching; (3) adding caustic to the leach solution and boiling to hydrolyze and precipitate crude beryllium hydroxide; (4) dissolving the crude beryllium hydroxide in sulfuric acid and separating the solution from undissolved silica; (5) sulfidizing the acid beryllium solution to precipitate heavy metal impurities; (6) adding ammonia to the clarified sulfate solution to precipitate beryllium hydroxide; and (7) converting the hydroxide to beryllium oxide (beryllia) by calcining at 900° C. About 60 percent more sodium fluoSilicate was required per unit of beryl than is used industrially in treating 10-to 12-percent BeO concentrate (80 to 90 percent beryl). Recovery decreased, and flux requirements increased, when treating concentrates containing less beryl.

This Bureau of Mines review focuses on the extent to which technologically and economically feasible programs in substitution, improved processing practices, including recycling, and design can achieve conservation of cobalt, chromium, manganese, and platinum-group metals, and thus reduce U.S. vulnerability to interruptions of supply. In addition, supply-side options--domestic and foreign resources, ocean minerals, and stockpiles--are identified. The report consolidates four major studies on these strategic and critical minerals sponsored entirely or partially by the Bureau in the last few years. These studies have been updated with further information from the recent literature.

MINE PROTOTYPE The prototype chosen for application demonstration is from Kingery (1960). The mine and the ventilation plan is presented in Figure 11. A new coal mine is projected with entrance by slope 1,500 feet long. Nine train entries will be standard for development, five as intake and four as return. One return shaft is planned near the slope bottom. The slope will have an area of 150 square feet and a perimeter of 55 feet. The return shaft will be circular with a diameter of 18 feet and will be 500 feet deep. Two hundred feet of the shaft and 500 feet of the slope will be concrete lined. Will it be possible to operate five units per shift with amount of air at each unit not less than 25,000 cfm? Additionally, a shop at the slope bottom will require 10,000 cfm. The problem is completely worked out using standard ventilation formulas and simple manual calculations in the above reference and is reproduced here in Appendix II for ready reference. APPLICATION In this manual, four different applications of the PSU/MVS are outlined. An article by Stefanko et al (1972), outlines how one can move from a mine map to a network for the generation of computer input. Attention is drawn to Figure 12, which is the network line diagram of the mine ventilation system in Figure 11. Note that every roadway junction has been numbered. The mineral industry of Bangladesh was totally dominated by natural gas production and its downstream uses. A small amount of cement was produced, and clays were used locally for ceramics and construction materials. Nitrogenous fertilizer was produced from natural gas and a modest, scrap-based steel industry produced steel for local consumption. The country has been developing and using its abundant and inexpensive gas reserves as fast as practical. The population, however, was predominantly dependent on agriculture for its livelihood. The industrial sector accounted for 10% of the economy, and most of the industrial output was directly associated with agricultural products jute, tobacco, and textiles. Industrial expansion, even with the availability of gas, was severely constrained because of limited domestic demand, lack of skilled work force and management, poor infrastructure, and a low rate of domestic savings. To put greater emphasis on the industrial sector, the Government established a National Committee for Industrial Development in July. The Committee instituted policy reforms in the areas of trade and investment. One important step was to move from a positive import list to a negative list, thereby permitting imports of items not restricted or banned. The system for recovering and approving new domestic or foreign industrial investments was streamlined to expedite what had become a cumbersome, bureaucratic exercise. To encourage industrial development in areas away from the crowded urban centers, several economic incentives reportedly were adopted. These included a reduced tax rate on imported machinery, exemption of import license fees, a reasonable debt equity rate, and a 9-year income tax exemption period.2 In the trade sector, imports increased 12% in fiscal year (FY) 19843 mainly

"Churn drills for blast-hole drilling are important to the operation of most open-pit metal mines, but certain hazards are created through their use that cause fatal and nonfatal accidents.2/ The purpose of this circular is to present a code of safe practice prepared and followed at a large Arizona open-pit copper mine, where safety is recognized as a definite operating problem. Such a code, based upon a thorough study of available published information as well as practical experience gained from accidents and near accidents, is the result of considerable effort and monetary expenditure. It is hoped that other operations using churn drills may benefit by the code presented, either in comparison with existing rules or in the preparation of new operating instructions.The code presented is in use at the Morenci Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corn., Morenci, Ariz. Similar codes are used at the New Cornelia Branch, Ajo, Ariz., and in the waste-pit operation at the United Verde Branch, Jerome, Ariz.The authors gratefully acknowledge the cooperation of the Phelps Dodge Corp., whose personnel made: possible the collection of information included in this circular. Larsen, general drilling and blasting foreman, Morenci Branch, Morenci, Ariz.The importance of churn drills in Arizona mining is apparent when it is realized that at all the open-pit copper mines blast holes are drilled with this equipment. At Morenci, approximately 98 percent of the ground is broken by primary blasting of churn-drill holes.There has been a growing tendency in Arizona's copper-mining industry to change from underground to open-pit mining, with consequent increase in the use of churn-drill blast holes for primary blasting.3/Thirty-three churn drills are in use at Morenci for blast-hole drilling. The drills operate with 440-volt alternating current, and trailing drill cables, in 500-foot sections, connect with the portable drill transformer station.4/ Three Diesel-driven churn drills for drilling prospect holes also are in use. About 25 churn-drill shifts are operated currently on a three-shift basis. Ordinarily, a two-man crew is assigned to each drill; however, with prospect-drill crews a third man is added to handle the sampling.Benches are carried at a uniform height of 50 feet. Churn-drill holes are 9 or 12 inches in diameter and about 60 feet deep. The holes are 18 feet apart in hard waste and 21 feet in soft waste and ore, with toes from 11 to 13 yards at the shovel grade. Both the hole spacing and the toe have been increased gradually, until they are now 2 yards longer than in 1940. The average ground broken per hole is 3,500 tons, or 60 tons of ore per foot of hole drilled. The holes are drilled 10 feet below the bench to avoid leaving hard bottom, which requires secondary drilling and blasting.Starting with a 12-inch casing, the prospect holes average 1,200 to 1,500 feet in depth and terminate with 6-inch casing; the deepest hole drilled to date went to 1,735 feet.In addition, churn-drills are used at Morenci to drill blast holes in the silica pit, limestone quarry, and the tailings dam. Other irregular applications are the drilling of holes to set trolley roles and for concrete piling in building foundations."

In April 1932, the Bureau of Mines published Information Circular 6595, entitled "Data in Reference to Installation of Cables in Shafts and Boreholes", in which were described methods followed in various sections of the United States when electrical circuits are taken into mines by means of cables suspended in shafts and boreholes. In view of the present tendency to extend high-tension cables along entries and passageways from the bottom of the shaft, borehole, or other point of entrance to coal mines rather than over the surface, it is deemed that the various methods of installing such cables deserve careful consideration, particularly in mines in which gas and coal dust contribute to explosion hazards. This is especially true of localities where there is an inclination to restrict the extension of 2,300- and 4,000-volt circuits into the mines. Probably it is feared that accidental contact with the cables of such circuits may result in more serious shock than with lower voltages; also, it is possible that new circuits are regarded merely as explosion hazards additional to those already existing, regardless of the manner in which the new circuits may be installed. It is the firm belief of some engineers that the circuits can be installed so that they will not be damaged by wrecks or roof falls, thereby eliminating the hazard of explosion from this source while at the same time making the chance of accidental contact remote if not impossible. Moreover, some believe that fire hazards from direct-current systems can be reduced by keeping motor-generator sets close to load centers. Thus, although the alternating-current circuits would be lengthened, the size and extent of direct-current circuits would be kept to a minimum.

"Electron spin resonance (ESRJ spectrum of the hydroxyl (· OH) radical spin adduct with .the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrrolintt-N-oxide has been obtained in suspensions of freshly ground quartz particles. The concentration of the spin adduct (and hence of the • OH radicals) increases with the amount of grinding. The dust's potential for the generation of the· OH radicals is maximum when fresh (i.e., immediately after grinding) and decreases to 50% in about a day on storage in air. Studies involving metal chelates .indicate that the • OH radical formation involves mainly the silica surface and H20 rather than the Fenton reaction. The results suggest that hydroxyl radical reaction(s) could be important in the lipid peroxidation and fibrogenicity by quartz dust, particularly .in acute silicosis. INTRODUCTIONIn this paper we report on our electron spin resonance (ESR) detection of the formation of hydroxyl (·OH) radicals in aqueous suspensions of freshly crushed quartz particles. This work was undertaken with a view to find possible clues to the role of free radicals in the pathogenesis of quartz-induced fibrogenicity, commonly known as silicosis. We noted that while silicosis is one of the major health hazards in coal and mineral industries, the mechanism by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly ·understood (Reiser and Last, 1979; Singh and .Rahman, 1987). It is generally thought, nevertheless, that the action of quartz particles on the biological membranes is the starting point of the silicotic process (Parazzi et - al., 1968). A possible clue to the mechanism of the membrane damage by quartz particles, in terms of the role of oxygenated free radicals, is suggested by the following observations. A suspension of quartz particles in contact with alveolar macrophages has been reported (Gabor et al., 1975; Koike et al., 1982) to initiate an enhancement of lipid peroxidation, defined broadly as the oxidative deterioration of polyunsaturated components of lipids. Hydroxyl (· OH) radicals are known to be capable of peroxidation by abstracting hydrogen atoms from cell-membrane lipids (Halliwell and Gutteridge, 1985) and of initiating lipid peroxidation in lysosomal membranes. (Fong et al., 1973). Arong other lines, it is known that exposure of cell membranes, fatty acids, and unsaturated food oils to ionizing radiation, which generates· OH radicals, causes rapid peroxidation (Halliwell and Gutteridge, 1985). Thus • OH radicals (and also other oxygenated species such as Oi, 10 2, and H20 2) might be expected to play a role in the toxicity of quartz. Earlier studies of the aqueous chemistry of quartz suspensions have reported detection of H2O 2 (Kalbanev et al., 1980), implicating the formation of ·OH radicals as transient species. However, we are not aware of any report of the detection of • OH radicals in quartz reactions, and thus the present study was undertaken. Since it-is known that, because of their high reactivity (hence short lifetime) in aqueous media, the • OH radicals cannot be detected via ESR directly (Finkelstein et al., 1980; Buettner, 1982) we have used .ESR combined with the spin-trap methodology (Finkelstein et al., 1980) for studying the· OH formation. The results show that· OH radicals are indeed formed in aqueous suspensions of freshly ground quartz; thus pointing to ·a possible new clue to the cytotoxicity of freshly formed quartz particles and thereby to silica fibrogenicity."

Thin sections of coal have been prepared for many years either by cutting on a microtome (1,2)5 or by grinding and polishing (2,1). Specimens of most coals had to be demineralized in hydrofluoric acid and softened in caustic solutions before they could be successfully cut with a conventional microtome. Some lignites could be cut without pretreatment. Jeffrey (1) obtained sections from coals of all ranks, although long and tedious pretreatment was required for anthracite. His sections were less than 1 cm.2 in area (probably much less for high rank coals) and about 5 microns thick. Thiessen (2) also cut sections of softened coals, mostly of low rank. His sections were a few square millimeters in area and about 3 microns thick. However, Thiessen preferred ground and polished sections for detailed studies because they were larger and had not been chemically attacked by softening media. He prepared ground sections as large as 4 cm.2 in area and usually 5 to 10 microns thick. Thousands of such sections, covering complete column samples of many coal beds, were studied for a number of years (4). With the development of the electron microscope and increased interest in quantitative optical studies of coals, a need for much thinner sections arose. However, no suitable technique for preparing such sections was known until Fernández-Morán developed a diamond knife for cutting ultrathin sections of hard materials (5). Workers at the Centre d'Etudes et Recherches de Charbonnages de France applied this new tool to the cutting of coal sections and have recently described their technique to the Burg, of Mines. This chapter includes tables from 1984 that were not available in time for publication of the 1984 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include corresponding tables for 1985. The value of raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1985 was estimated at $23.2 billion, an increase of $0.07 billion over the value for 1984. This is the third consecutive year that the value has increased, and except for a decrease in 1982, the value for each year has increased since 1971, or 13 out of 14 years. However. while the value of industrial minerals production continued to grow, reflecting the growth of the domestic economy, the value of metal mine production decreased in 1985 by 6%. This drop was more than offset by a 3% increase in the value of industrial minerals production because the value of industrial minerals produced was more than three times larger than the value of metals. The decrease makes 1986 the third year in the past 5 years in which a drop in the value of metal mining production occurred in the United States where production continued to lag behind growing world production. Domestic production of such major commodities 88 aluminum, copper, iron ore, phosphate rock, and zinc continued to decline owing to a number of international and domestic factors. Gold continued to be the most active commodity in the domestic metal mining industry. Despite lower prices, gold output increased to 2.5 million troy ounces, a 19% increase over that of 1984. The estimated annual production capacity of new gold mines beginning production exceeded 1 million ounces.

A prototype mucking machine designed to operate in narrow-vein stopes was developed by Foster-Miller, Inc., Waltham, MA, under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The machine, called a compact loader-trammer, or minimucker, was designed to replace slusher muckers in narrow-vein underground mines. The minimucker is a six-wheel-drive, skid-steered, load-haul-dump (LHD) machine that loads muck at the front with a novel slide-bucket system and ejects it out the rear so that the machine does not have to be turned around. To correct deficiencies of the tether-remote-control system, a computer-based, radio-remote-control system was retrofitted to the minimucker. Initial tests indicated a need to assist the operator in guiding the machine in narrow stopes. An automatic guidance system that used ultrasonic ranging sensors and a wall-following algorithm was installed. Additional tests in a simulated test stope showed that these changes improved the operation of the minimucker. The design and functions of the minimucker and its computer-based, remote-control system are reviewed, and an ultrasonic-sensor-based guidance system is described.

Ecuador's real gross domestic product (GDP) increased 6% in 1976 despite persistent shortages of electrical power and essential fuels, which caused factory slow-downs and shutdowns. Petroleum export earnings, which made up more than 50% of total export value in 19716, totaled $565 million, a 9% increase over those of 1975. A new 60,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery at Esmeraldas was scheduled to go on- stream in mid- 1 97 7, operating entirely on Ecuadorean crude. Corpración Estatal Petró1era Ecualtoriana (CEPE) started construction of a 600-kilometer network of product pipelines which was scheduled to be completed in 1977 to coincide with the completion of the refinery.

Underground and strip mining (6,7) produce different hydrologic environments. Many underground mines are below the zone that is completely saturated with water and the mine openings may cause new and continuous contact between sulfurous material and water which flows from the saturated zone to the workings. Strip mines are usually above the zone of continuous saturation and contact between sulfurous material and water is generally restricted to periods of precipitation. A full appreciation of the problem of water pollution caused by drainage from deep mines requires a basic understanding of occurrences and movement of water in the ground and the modes of ground water entrance into mining areas.

The industrial sand industry has been exploring new techniques to reduce dust. One company was experimenting with adding water during bagging operations to the surface of the hag, and into the product as it flowed into the bag. The Bureau of Mines, using instantaneous dust sampling instruments, measured the effectiveness of three methods of adding water. Results indicated that various types of water sprays applied in carefully controlled amounts could reduce dust up to 50% at worker locations at the bagging machine and inside a railroad boxcar. This report also discusses constraints such as product handling, customer acceptance, cold weather problems, dust collector performance, and other areas.

Vapor-liquid equilibria data for 65-34-1 and 25-27-48 mole percent helium-nitrogen-methane mixtures are presented for 12 temperatures from 76.5° to 164° K and pressures from 100 to 1,200 psia. These data were obtained in a windowed phase equilibria cell equipped with a vapor recirculating pump. Isobaric and isothermal K-values are plotted for both mixtures. Two isometric plots are included.

This report analyzes mobile equipment fires for all U.S. surface and underground coal and metal/nonmetal mining categories by state and 2 year time periods during 1990-1999. Risk rate values are derived, and ignition source, methods of fire detection and suppression, and other variables are examined. The data were derived from MSHA mine fire accident publications and verbal communications with mine personnel. The analyses will provide the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the mining industry with a better understanding of the hazards associated with mobile equipment fires and will create a basis for future fire research programs.

This is the third in a series of four articles that discuss underground fire-fighting preparedness. As with the first two articles, it is based on interviews with 214 miners conducted at 7 underground coal mines (referred to as Mines ?A? through ?G?) by researchers of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Center [Vaught et al. 1996]. In the first article, the authors presented an overview of the study conducted by NIOSH on mine fire response preparedness and provided a general perspective on underground mine fires. The second article discussed miners? preparedness to evacuate a fire and their experience with incipient fires. In this article, we describe miners? experience in fighting underground mine fires and present their perceptions of training and readiness for fire-fighting.

A U.S. National Academy of Sciences study concluded that for significant progress in coal mine dust control, research should be directed more toward obtaining fundamental understanding of the origin, transport and characteristics of respirable coal mine dust. Theoretical and experimental studies on transport of dust · in mine airways, particularly coordinated efforts to validate theory with practice, are scarce. Some empirical models, developed on the basis of experimental data, are available but these models cannot be applied to new conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of theoretical and experimental studies on the transport and deposition of dust in mine airways. This study is a part of an ongoing research project in the Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust.In the paper, the assumptions of the modeling phase of the project and the development of a convectiondiffusion equation for dust transport in mine airways are outlined. The important aspect of the modeling effort is the capture of the deposition phenomenon. The experiments performed under controlled conditions in a typical mine airway, as well as under normal mine operating conditions, are discussed. The comparison of the model predictions with experimental results are made to identify critical areas of agreements and deviations. The implications of the findings and areas for further research and development are presented."
