"INTRODUCTION The strategic importance of zinc warranted investigation of the Silver Eagle zinc prospect, which was first examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in January 1943.From October 12, 1943, to March 16, 1944, the Bureau explored the deposit by trenching, core drilling, and sampling to establish the amount and grade of ore and to test for the presence of sulfide-ore minerals at depth.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Tungsten from the hydrogen reduction of WF was vapor - deposited to coat MERM (Material Evaluation Rocket Motor ) graphite and rhenium- lined graphite nozzles . These nozzles have surface configurations that preclude the conventional fabrication of high- density- tungsten liners . Operation at 550 ° C produced selectively placed uniform coatings of specified thicknesses at near theoretical density . An acceptable coating could not be deposited on a beryllia nozzle because of an undesirable side reaction between the substrate and one or more of the products of the reduction reaction .

If you missed this year?s Texas State Holmes Safety Association meeting, you missed a great one. On January 23 & 24, 2009, we held the meeting that was rescheduled when Hurricane Ike threatened Corpus Christi in September 2008. Sixty-five persons from across the state attended the meeting held at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach. The weather was 82 degrees, and the sky was clear and perfect for a safety meeting. Evaluations submitted by the attendees gave the presentations, the networking, and even the food top marks. There were eight councils represented; Big Country, Central Texas, Costal Bend, Heart of Texas, Hill Country, North Texas and North Central. Presentations included Workplace Examinations, Emergency Preparedness, Screen Safety, Contractor Responsibilities, Powered Haulage, Supervising for Safety, and Basic Inspections of Slings and Rigging. Mr. Edward Lopez, SC MSHA District Manager, gave the State of the District Address.

Analytical, geographical, and geological data on 67 samples of crude oils from Utah are presented, along with some correlations and interpretations. Most of the, geologic formations that produce oil in other areas are also productive in Utah; and as in many other locations, the Permian, Pennsylvanian, and Mississippian formations account for the major amount of the total oil produced in the State. Some anomalies and unusual phenomena are noted. Although most Utah oils are low in sulfur, a sample containing the highest percentage of sulfur ever recorded by the Bureau of Mines is among the oils discussed in this paper. Most of the oil from the major producing formations in Utah is low in sulfur; the same formations produce high-sulfur oils in adjoining Rocky Mountain States. Some Utah oils are both waxy and asphaltic, an unusual combination of characteristics. Correlation index curves for some oils are shown suggesting compositional differences in oils from different producing formations. Production statistics trace the rapid rise of oil production in the State after the first commercial discovery in 1947 and indicate a decline in amounts produced since 1959, the year of peak production in Utah.

A sample of oxidized copper ore from a large deposit located in Pinal County, Ariz., about 50 miles northeast of Tucson, was treated by the Federal Bureau of Mines in a small-scale continuous pilot plant by a procedure which comprised acid curing complemented by water leaching and countercurrent decantation washing in a series of drag classifiers. A feed was prepared by pugging minus 1/4-in, ore with concentrated sulfuric acid and about 10 pct, of eater, followed by curing in batches for about 24 hr. The cured ore was fed continuously to a leach drum, where it was mixed with advance solution from the countercurrent washing system to dissolve the sulfated copper. The pulp was thickened and washed in four Esperanza-type classifiers, using a flocculating agent to obtain rapid settling and thickening. The leached ore pulps thickened satisfactorily in the drag classifiers when about 0.8 lb. of a polyacrylamide flocculant per ton of dry feed was used. Clear overflow liquors were obtained, and classifier rake products containing about 60 pct. solids were produced, As much as 90 lb./hr. of ore was treated in the plant, with a recovery of 60 pct. of the total copper or 80 pct, of the acid-soluble copper when 2 tons of water per ton of feed was used in washing. The acid consumption was 4.3 lb./lb. of copper recovered. On the basis of the maximum feed rate employed and the effective pulp-settling area of the classifiers, a total of 1 sq. ft. of pool area was required per ton of dry feed per day for the thickening and washing operations. The washing efficiency in the test was 95 pct.

The preface of the United States Bureau of Mines Manual of First Aid Instruction contains the following paragraphs: One of the most important inquiries that Congress has authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct relates to health condi- tions among those engaged in the mineral industries. Investigations made early with a view to bettering these conditions demonstrated the need of prompt care of injured miners, as, under the difficulties inherent to mining and other mineral industries; wounds seemingly unimportant, if not treated promptly, may become infected and possibly cause permanent crippling or even death of the porach. In the past many seriously injured persons have been treated by fellow workers ignorant of approved means of treatment and transportation and have been handled in such a manner as to cause suffering and to accentuate injuries to such a degree as to bring about permanent disablement. Accordingly, the need of general instruction in first aid became apparent. It must be recognized that the conditions in and about the mines, mills, smelters, quarries, oil fields, etc., usually present difficulties not found in large industrial centers where experienced surgeons are available and hospitals close at hand. Many mines are isolated and, when an accident occurs several miles underground, there may be a serious lapse of time before the injured person can be brought to the surface and taken to the hospital or given attention by a sur- geon who may have to come a long distance. Under such conditions it has been frequently demonstrated that, if effective first aid is not given, the injured person may die or become permanently crippled... First-aid instruction has been found to be an excellent aid3in pre- venting accidents. This information circular is a revision of I.C. 7238, Danger from Carbon Monoxide in the Home, by L. B. Berger and H. H. Schrenk, issued in April 1943. Each winter brings its toll of deaths and serious accidents from the deadly gas, carbon monoxide. Newspapers carry warnings to the public of the, dangers of this gas, and frequent news items report the finding of persons dead at unconscious from the effects of carbon monoxide, yet these accidents continue. Either these warnings are not read, or they are unheeded by people who feel that, "It can't happen to me." It can happen to you carbon monoxide is no respecter of persons.

Bauxite, the principal source of aluminum, has been mined from deposits in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., since 1899; war needs have greatly stimulated production. Many of the ore deposits are basin-shaped and either outcrop or are covered by a shallow-depth overburden at their peripheries; these are mined by stripping and open-pit methods. When stripping becomes economically impracticable, incline shafts or slopes are sunk on the dips of the deposits, and underground mining is done on the retreat, using a room-and-pillar method.

"INTRODUCTION The Bozeman corundum deposit was first examined in May 1944 by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines. In August 1944, the property was re-examined because of a sharply increased war demand for corundum. A small program of trench exploring was undertaken after the second examination. The work was started in October 1944 and was completed in December 1944. Two examples of en echelon mining-induced fractures seen in hard-rock mines provided a basis for inferring that fracture zones and bedding plane separations immediately surrounding mine openings are promoted by oblique shear into the openings. It is hypothesized that initial fractures or separations form at the corners of openings as a result of high stress and physical constraint on the rock's ability to deform elastically toward the opening. These conditions result in a locally preferred direction of shearing. The shearing, in turn, generates tensile stress that initiates a progression of systematically offset fractures approximately parallel to the direction of greatest compressive stress. The fractures or bedding separations create tabular rock layers that amplify shearing displacement through bending and dilation. Such shearing effectively reduces and redistributes the compressive stress, but significant dilation is an inevitable consequence. The combination of dilation and shearing and the progressive development of fracture zones have important implications with respect to ground support. The concept of mining-induced fractures forming as a result of shear is illustrated by two examples from coal mines. First, fractures seen at longwall faces probably result from shear associated with subsidence. The fracture zone that develops approximates or possibly defines the draw angle of subsidence. As the face advances, fractures extend downward along the lower edge of the fracture zone, while upper extensions of the fractures are pressed closed. Fracture zones in entry roofs provide a second practical example. Here, mining-induced fractures typically follow bedding planes. The shear zone model suggests that the first bedding separations develop near the edges of the roof and successive separations progress upward and toward the center. However, if the direction of greatest stress is inclined with respect to the roof, a fracture or bedding separation zone may propagate from one side only and also extend higher. Because coal ahead of the face provides some support against lateral shear deformation, bedding separation is inhibited near the face. Rock bolts installed close to the face ultimately become more strained and bent than bolts installed a few meters from the face, and bolts installed through the more remote part of a separation zone may ultimately experience the greatest tensile and bending strains. This model is supported by field data documenting progressive bolt failures that rapidly propagated downward across the roof during face advance.

This report sterns from a study undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine the possibility of reducing filter-cake moisture by applying radiant heat. Suitable laboratory equipment was set up to study the effect of heat, heating time, proximity of the heater to the filter cake, cake thickness, and other variables related to the final filter-cake moisture. A minus-48-mesh coal slurry and application of heat for 60 seconds resulted in filter-cake moistures 5.6 to 13.2 percentage points lower than could be accomplished by filtration alone at 24 inches of Hg for 1-1/4-and 1 1/2-inch cake thickness, respectively. The moisture reduction can be attributed to the combined effect of lower fluid viscosity and evaporation.

[The blast-furnace operator is often confronted with the problem of determining the size of the materials which are used in the furnace burden. The statement is heard that the coke is larger or smaller or that certain ore is finer than that previously used. A screen analysis of the materials used gives a measure of the different sizes of materials in an aggregate. When one is fine and the other is coarse, the difference is obvious; but when the materials are of similar sire, it is more difficult to estimate the degree of finances or coarseness. In considering raw materials it would be desirable to be able to judge the size of the radio ideal materials entering the furnace and the burden as a whole, by one representative value, such as the average size of particle. Previous work by Perrott and Kinney3 developed a method for measuring the average size of particle in a mass of finely ground materials, and an attempt will be made to apply this method to the materials included in the blast-furnace charge and to the entire burden.]

The Wood mine area was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in -1941 by a magnetic survey and a gravitational survey. Surface trenches were excavated, and diamond-drill holes were bored at the strongest anomalies developed in common by the two surveys. In the last century', several widely separated bodies of chromite with some magnetite had been exploited in a 'serpentine belt near its contact with schist. At one time this district held a virtual monopoly on the production of chromite. Known ore bodies now are exhausted. Owing to the relatively high specific gravity of chromate compared to normal rocks, a gravitational survey was run to determine which magnetic anomalies were worthy of diamond drilling. Linear feet of trenching totaled 1,710 feet. Ten holes were diamond drilled, which totaled 2,272 feet. The log of the drilling is shown in the text in a tabulation of drill-hole data.

The physical properties and clay mineral content of the major oil-producing formations in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming were determined by analyses of cores from 100 wells. Interrelationships were established among permeability, restored water saturation, clay content, and bulk swelling capacity of the crushed sample and used to estimate the susceptibility of the formations to water damage. The ratio of water permeability to gas permeability (kw/ki) offers a convenient scale for semiquantitatively estimating the water sensitivity of sands. The irreducible water saturation was also found to have a similar relationship to the clay mineral content and the water sensitivity of the sands. The average relation of water permeability to gas permeability is different for each sand, as shown by the curves, and the relative positions of the curves indicate the degree of water sensitivity of each sand from which the susceptibility to water damage may be estimated. How accurately these estimates show formation behavior under field operations will not be known until studies of field performance can be made. The water permeabilities of the Muddy, Minnelusa, and Tensleep sands average about the same as the gas permeabilities, and these sands are classified as insensitive. The water permeabilities of the Sussex and Shannon sands, at the other extreme, are much less than the gas permabilities [when average ki is 30 millidarcys (md), kw is 6.1 md], and these sands are classified as highly water sensitive. The sensitivities of the five other sands are between these extremes.

In the Bureau of Mines study, a filter with a 20-by 20-inch-square cross section was inserted into the exhaust ducting of a 4-stroke-cycle, 90-hp diesel engine, and the efficiency of removal of total particulate was measured gravimetrically as a function of time. Removal efficiencies were close to 90 pct during the main portion of several extended runs employing several combinations of filter beds. Variations in engine load had little effect on collection efficiency. Particle size as measured by a Bureau-developed online instrument centered on 0.07 m based on number count. Removal efficiency increased rather sharply for both larger and smaller particles.

"Among the recently patented detonating compounds that have been suggested as substitutes for the commonly used fulminate of mercury is the normal lead salt of trinitroresorcin, or styphnic acid. As no data concerning its use or practi¬cability were available, a study of its properties was made in the explosives laboratory at the Bureau of Mines experiment station at Pittsburgh, Pa. This paper embodies the results obtained.Normal lead trinitroresorcinate was first prepared and patented*** by Herz; it probably found some use during the World War, but no record of its performance is available,Preparation of Lead Trinitrpresorcinate.In his patent specifications, Herz states that the normal salt may be obtained in a quantitative way by precipitating a multiple of the equivalent weight of the lead salt of a strong inorganic acid - such as lead nitrate - in the presence of a weak organic acid - such as acetic acid - by heating with a Teak solution of the alkali-metal salts or alkaline-earth salts of trinitroresorcin. Herz gives the following example: 245 grams of dry trinitroresorcinand 290 grams of crystalline sodium carbonate are dissolved in in 18.8 liters of boiling water, to which 77 c.c. of glacial acetic acid is added. The toiling solution is mixed with a boiling solution of 650 grams of lead nitrate in 1.4 liters of water, stirring rapidly; and the mixture is boiled for two minutes, after which it is cooled quickly with constant stirring. The precipitated crystals are then filtered off, washed several times with cold water, and dried."
