[The supply of gravel spar and of acid spar is not well balanced. Gravel spar -- 85 per cent flourspar, 5 per cent silica -- gluts the market, whereas acid spar -- 98 per cent fluorspar, 1 per cent silica -- is somewhat scarce. Hence it is desirable to convert some of the gravel spar into acid spar. Knowledge of this condition prompted the Franklin. Fluorsrar Co. at Paducah. Ky., to enter into cooperation with the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy to improve the methods of fluorspar, milling so that morn acid spar would be available. The fluorspar company detailed Mr. Omar Greeman for the work. During the course of the investigation, while Mr. Greeman was also doing work for a master's degree in the School of Mines? an extensive study was made of gravity concentration of fluorspar ores. Decrepitation by heat treatment was also given a laboratory try-out. A part of tie time was spent on flotation; these notes relate only to the flotation. The results of one of the flotation runs is appended. The test was made in a 500-gram mechanical-agitation machine. The sample was ground to 100-mesh in a pebble mill.]

In the United States water pollution resulting from mining activities has long been recognized as a major environmental problem Mine drainage pollution results from many types of mining activities and includes both physical (i e , sedimentation) and chemical (i e , acidification, metal contamination, etc ) pollutants Active and abandoned surface and underground mines, mineral processing plants, mine and processing plant waste disposal areas, haulage roads, and tailing ponds are typical sources of mine related water pollution (130) One of the most serious pollution problems arising from mining activities is acid mine drainage resulting from the chemical reaction of sulfide minerals (commonly iron sulfides) and air in the presence of water Acid mine drainage is commonly associated with coal and hard rock mining areas in the United States In general the more serious and extensive acid mine drainage problems exist in the more humid coal regions east of the Mississippi River (11) In 1964 the U S Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, reported that acid mine drainage adversely affected fish and wildlife habitat in 9,477 kilometers (5,890 miles) of streams and 6,062 hectares (14,967 acres) of impoundments in 20 states in the United States (64) Of the total affected waters, coal mining operations accounted for 97 percent of the acid mine drainage pollution reported for streams and 93 percent of that reported for impoundments In 1970 more than 19,308 kilometers (12,000 miles) of streams in the United States were reportedly significantly degraded by mining related pollution (130) Of the total affected kilometers, 16,920 kilometers (10,516 miles) or approximately 88 percent were located in the Appalachian coal region (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, eastern Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, and Alabama) In addition, more than 965 kilometers (600 miles) of streams reportedly were degraded by coal mining in states in the Illinois, Western Interior, and Rocky Mountain coal regions The remaining portion of the stream pollution resulted from the mining of (1) copper (california, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wyoming), (2) lead and zinc (Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, and Tennessee), (3) uranium (Rocky Mountain States), (4) iron (Lake Superior iron region), (5) sand and gravel (all states), (6) phosphate (Florida and other states), (7) gold (Alaska), (8) bauxite and barite (Arkansas), and (9) molybdenum, gold, and other metals (Colorado) Abandoned mines and abandoned mine waste disposal areas contribute a large portion of the total pollution resulting from mining activities Numerous abandoned underground mines are located throughout the United States and many are discharging mine drainage pollutants In 1966 the U S Bureau of Mines estimated that more than 88,000 inactive and abandoned underground mines were in existance (126) A listing of these mines by state is presented in Table 1 0-1 More recent estimates indicate that this list is incomplete In Colorado alone there is

"Oil-shale camps are peculiarly favored, in that before they are established it can be ascertained with a,of certainty, that the life of the project is not limited. Unlike camps at metal mines, where the metal content of a given area is frequently an unknown quantity until after years of development, oil-shale camps should, from the outset, be planned and built as permanent types of camps. Where this procedure is followed camps will be established which better serve the needs of the industry and the cost of their general care and upkeep will be less.Selection of camp or townsite.The site of the camp or town, whether on company property or not, should be selected with care. It should be separate if possible from the location of the plants of the company so as to be free from noise and fumes and so as to provide a change of environment for employees in going from their work to their homes.The principal features governing the site to be selected are as follows:Drainage. The general contour of the surrounding country should be such that drainage is away from the site. The camp or town should, if practical, be situated on higher ground than that in its immediate vicinity.Soil. The nature of the soil on which the camp or town is located may bear a decided relation to health. A porous, well under drained top soil of at least four feet in depth insures dryness and facilities the placing of foundations and the laying of water mains and sewer pipes. Such a soil also is an advantage in growing trees, shrubs and grass plots, which are a decided adjunct to making the community attractive."

In recent years there has been no loss of life from fires in the underground mines of the Lake Superior district, but numerous minor fires and several serious ones involving loss of property and production have occurred. The iron-ore-producing companies recognize that well-equipped mine rescue stations are a valuable asset against the ever-present ranger of mine fires or the possibility of hazardous atmospheric conditions underground. Prompt action by trained and properly equipped rescue teams is recognized as the prime essential in saving lives, property, and production when fires occur. To achieve this purpose, the mining companies have provided themselves with mine rescue equipment and maintain trained mine rescue crews. This circular describes how one progressive company has provided, maintained, and improved upon such protection for its underground iron-ore mines on the Marquette and Menominee iron ranges of Michigan's upper peninsula. SUMMARY The central mine rescue station of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Negaunee, Mich., has provided the company's mines with competent and well-equipped mine rescue teams. The new central mine rescue station at the Mather mine "B" shaft has the distinction of having underground training facilities provided as a part of the station. The company maintains the largest trained force in mine rescue in the Lake Superior district, and mine rescue training is employed as a part of the accident-and fire-prevention program. One of the most important results has been the promotion of closer cooperation and understanding between the management and the workmen. In addition to the service rendered to company mines, the station and its personnel have given assistance to others. The station and its equipment have also been used for training several nearby community volunteer fire departments. This mine rescue station and its personnel have been a dependable and valuable asset to the community in which it is located.

A new type of apparatus for prerefining molten blast furnace iron and to reduce the cost of subsequent steelmaking consists of a funnel - shaped device lined with firebrick into which a horizontal stream of molten pig iron is directed tangentially at the top . The rotary motion thus induced causes the stream to flatten itself upon the wall and flow in a spiral path to the outlet ; thus , the device was termed " vortex cone .' Oxygen and other refining agents are impinged upon the flowing metal in the cone where reaction is facilitated by the large metal surface exposed and the turbulent flow pattern . Experiments with water in 1 - foot - diameter funnels provided an idealization of the flow patterns to be expected with molten iron . A brick - lined reactor 3 feet in diameter was built for desiliconizing molten pig iron in lots of 1 to 2 tons . At flow rates of 0.3 to 0.5 ton min - 1 (430 to 720 tons per day ) this apparatus was 64- to 90 - pct effective in desiliconization with oxygen efficiencies of 19 to 41 pct . Detailed experiments to develop basic engineering data are underway , and adaptation of this principle to other reactions and reactants is planned .

This report describes a ferric chloride trap, based on formation of a low-melting sodium chloride-ferric chloride mixture of near-eutectic composition, and its use in chlorination of impure titaniferous materials. The trap is placed in the hot gas stream between the chlorination reactor and the condenser. Virtually all of the iron is removed by the trap. The condensed titanium tetrachloride is free of suspended solids and contains only a trace of iron. Four examples are given of the use of the ferric chloride trap in chlorination of impure titaniferous materials. INTRODUCTION In the Kroll process, ductile titanium metal is produced by reducing titanium tetrachloride with magnesium metal.4/ In commercial practice, titanium tetrachloride is produced by chlorinating titaniferous materials in the presence of carbon.2/ In 1957 most producers were using rutile, and virtually all plants were designed for its use. About four-fifths of the domestic consumption of rutile was imported from Australia. The Bureau of Mines, under provisions of contract DMP-116 with the General Services Administration, studied electrosmelting of domestic ilmenites and titaniferous magnetites to produce high-titanium slags with pig iron as a byproduct. Under the same contract, chlorination studies also were being made of these slags. Smelting was done at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Experiment Station, Albany, Oreg., and chlorination at the Electrometallurgical Experiment Station, Boulder City, Nev.

The only known large deposits of talc in Alabama occur near Winterboro, Talladega County. Preliminary examinations were made, and work by the Bureau of Mines was recommended. The deposits were investigated to determine the amount and grade of talc present and to search for new talc deposits in the general area. Seventy-five holes, totaling 3370.4 feet, were drilled with Government-owned core drills from August 1, 1948, to February 11, 1949, and 27 samples were taken for assay. This report presents the factual data disclosed by drilling and the results of beneficiation of the talc.

"This paper presents an analysis of the dynamics of bit wear on the productivity of the continuous miners. Two field surveys have been carried out. The first survey was to assess the impact of bit wear on productivity and production cost. The second survey was to study the wear characteristics of the cutting tool (i.e. magnitude, forms, and mechanisms of bit wear). Primary factors affecting bit wear is identified and laboratory experiments were carried out to study the effects of some of these primary factors on wear in detail. Results indicate that bit wear has a significant effect on the productivity of the continuous miners. Furthermore under the severe geologic conditions (i.e. cutting rock partings and roof and floor rocks) bit wear not only hampers the productivity, but also increases the production cost due to a higher number of bit consumption. This study also indicated that bit wear accelerates beyond 20% of the conical height loss which corresponds to 7% of the weight loss. This increase rate of wear is an indicative of higher abrasion between bit body and cutting material, resulting in a more dusty environment.IntroductionThe high demand for coal production has increased the need for mechanized coal cutting in underground coal mines. Continuous miners have been used in the United States of America for nearly four decades and now presently more than 2000 are in operation. Almost half of the underground coal production of the country is by continuous miners. Today, competition in the coal industry has increased, due mainly to market conditions and legal restrictions, thus placing an emphasis on production, efficiency, and safety. The use of continuous miners has resulted in the generation of respirable coal dust which causes black lung in mine workers. On the other hand, bit wear presents a serious problem as it affects productivity and economy.Much research in the put has been done on energy requirements and mechanism of energy dissipation for ideal rock fragmentation in the cutting process. Recently, dust hazards in underground coal mines as a result of coal cutting has been a great concern to mining engineers as well as environmentalist of the country. In past, much emphasize has been given to fragmentation mechanics (Khair et al, 1989), dust generation due to regrinding (Khair and Xu, 1991) and dust generation due to bit wear (Khair, Xu. and Ahmad, 1992). These studies concluded that dust concentration increased considerably after a bit weight loss of 7% and thereafter the bit should be replaced. Thus, legal restriction by the Mine Health and Safety Administration for the respirable dust concentration in underground might be a factor deciding the level or rate of production using continuous miners. While efforts in research are on reducing dust generation, it is also important and relevant to study bit wear in more detail.Bit wear is affected by three major groups of parameters: (1) machine operating parameters, (2) insitu conditions and (3) properties of rock. Again, past studies have shown that depth of cut, material of tool, position of water jet and velocity of the rotating drum are very important machine operating parameters. The content of the rock/coal material is important as bit wear is usually due to abrasion or adhesion. Diffusive wear becomes dominant only when the temperature exceeds the sensitive range i.e critical temperature. Mechanical tools have indicated that a rise in temperature is a function of drum velocity, properties of cutting material (rock or coal) and properties of tool. Bit wear due to chemical reaction and oxidation art almost negligible in coal cutting."

"With a view of elucidating the role of glutathione (GSH) in the biochemical pathways of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis, we carried out electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic investigations of the chromate-GSH redox reactions. The ESR measurements, employing spin-traps, provide evidence for the involvement of the glutathione (GS•) radical, as well as an isolable Cr(V)-glutathione intermediate. These results indicater a new mechanism for the reduction of chromate by GSH in cellular environment and help understand the (unexpected increase in Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand breaks at elevated GSH levels.We report here indirect electron spin resonance (EGR evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl (GS) radical and direct evidence for a Cr(V) intermediate in the reactions of glutathione ¬(GSH) with chromate for the first time.. This work was undertaken to clarify the biochemical pathway of the reduction of chromate by GSH, since this reduction process is thought to be a critical step in the pathogenesis of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis. This follows from the literature reports which show that (a) Cr(VI)compounds have been proven to be carcinogens in laboratory animals as well as in human studies2-4, (b) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds are mutagenic 5-7, (c) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds can penetrate cell membranes 8.9 (d) the final state of Cr(VI) in cellular reductions is Cr(III)', (e) by itself chromate (or Cr(VI)) cannot be directly mutagenic since Cr(VI) is known not to interact with isolated DNA under physiological conditions 10, suggesting the significance of Cr(VI).reduction processes. One of the major reductants in cellular environments is thought to be the GSH, both outside and inside the ce11s 11-13. Other evidence for the role of GSH in the chromate toxicity is seen from recent studies showing that exposure of hamster cells to non-toxic levels of added selenite increases the levels' of GSH as well as the Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand beaks 14, and thatsuch DNA strand breaks in hepatocytes also change in direct proportion to their GSH content 15,16. These observations wereinterpreted as implying that the reduction of chromate by GSH, to some reactive intermediate is an important step in the chromatecarcinogenicity 15,16. "This article first describes the impact of respirable dust on the health of miners in underground coal mines in the United States of America. Second, it identifies the major sources of dust generation, namely cutting tools in the road headings. Two surveys associated with cutting tools were made to determine the useful life of these cutting tools, and to determine the effect of cutting tool wear on productivity of the continuous miners. Third, this article presents the results of a series of experiments carried out in the Rock Mechanics Laboratories at West Virginia University in order to study: 3.1 the effect of cutting tool rate of wear on respirable dust generation, 3.1.1 the effects of rock materials on tool wear and respirable dust generation, 3.1.2 the effect of cutting tool geometric parameters on respirable dust generation, and 3.1.3 the effect of tip materials used in the cutting tool on respirable dust generation. Recommendations in regard to cutting tool design are also presented in this paper.Silica and coal dust are the two major elements affecting the health of underground miners. According to Lemen [1] approximately 1,500 men died due to breathing in silica dust in 1936 while tunneling through a mountain of mostly silica, near the town of Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. Coal dust resulting in lung diseases in one of the major health hazards in underground coal mines. The impact of black lung on miners, coal workers' pneumoconioisis (CWP), has ranged from 16,000 to 23,000 each year since 1982 [1].The trend for conventional mining to continuous machine cutting of coal, using more productive machinery, is inexorable. Intolerable level of dust generated at the face is an indication of inefficient coal/rock cutting by these machines. The federal goverment of the United States paid about 11.7 billion dollars in workmen's compensation to more than 470,000 miners with CWP [2]. Bieniawski and Zipf [3] reported that annual benefit payments were about 2 billion dollars. The enactment of the Health and Safety Act in 1969 in the United States triggered the initial investigation into coal cutting mechanisms and cutting tool designs.The surveys concerning the utilization of cutting bits and performance of continuous miners in underground coal mines were made in order to have first hand information about bit consumption and coal produ¬ction.Three types of used bits, commonly utilized cutting tools on continuous miners, were collected from different coal mines. The used bits were grouped into symmetrically and asymmetrically worn bits. Distribution analysis for weight loss and conical height loss was done. Details of the results are presented elsewhere [4], here the results are summarized briefly. The analysis shows that approximately 50% of the collected bits have worn asymmetrically, which shows that many bits do not rotate properly during cutting. Analysis of the distribution of bit wear showed that the degree of bit wear varied from one type to another and with mining conditions. On average, the weight loss of the used bits was 4% to 7% with a maximum of 31%. Correspondingly, the loss of the conical height was observed to vary between 11% and 23% with a maximum of 71%. Figure 1 shows typical data associated with some of the used bits."

A preliminary objective is to obtain the best values of the second virial coefficients and to develop an equation that will reproduce the best values as a function of temperature. The method of treatment consists in expressing the PV product of a gas, for a given isotherm, in terms of a power series in either the pressure or the density and evaluating the constants by least squares solution. Associated with these functions whose coefficients have been evaluated by least squares, the following errors, or deviations, are of interest; the standard error of a single measurement; the standard error in each coefficient; and the standard error of the resulting function.

This paper describes the methods and equipment developed at the Bureau's Experimental Oil-Shale mine near Rifle, Colo., for placing men in position to scale loose rock from the walls, pillars, and roofs of high stopes or rooms. The equipment developed at Rifle has application not only in oil-shale mining but in most of the country's underground limestone mines and in the exploitation of other mineral deposits mined in high stopes by room-and-pillar methods. Equipment in use at Rifle includes: 1. A boom-type scaling rig with a self-leveling platform constructed on a small "cat"-mounted crane. Men working from the platform on this machine can efficiently scale mine walls and roofs 27 feet above the floor. 2. A conventional fork-lift truck modified to provide a remotely controlled working platform from which men can scale to heights 27 feet above the mine floor. The platform on this unit is larger than on the boom-type rig and allows the men to inspect larger areas of the mine wall from a single setting of the machine. 3. A third rig, consisting essentially of a platform mounted on a tele-scoping tower, designed and built to elevate men 65 feet above the mine floor. Versatility of this machine permits men to work from the platform at heights of 5 to 65 feet. In the operating position, the unit requires a minimum clearance of 25 feet. In the nonoperating position the tower of the machine folds to an over-all height of 15 feet 10 inches to permit travel through haulageways. 4. An industrial gun, lightweight scaling bars, and mechanical scalers, which have been tried for removing loose rock from the mine walls with varying degrees of success.

Potash is one of the principal foods and is necessary for the growth of most vegetables, grains, and fruits. For many years, this country depended entirely upon foreign sources for its supply of potassium compounds. However, during the last 15 years the domestic production of potash has gradually increased, as shown in table 1. 7/ Imports now supply only half of the American market. In 1936, the equivalent of 207,000 tons of K20 was imported, and 210,000 tons was produced domestically. In 1935, domestic consumption was approximately 420,000 tons of potash, a 57 percent increase over that for 1934 and surpassing previous peaks of 1928 and 1930.

The Bureau of Mines has developed, on a laboratory scale, a superior Eluex-type circuit for eluting and recovering uranium from ion exchange resins. The improved circuit differs from conventional Eluex practice in that a stage of uranium solvent extraction is coupled with each stage of resin elution rather than the elution and solvent extraction operations being conducted separately. The new system reduces the number of stages, retention time, and resin inventory in the elution circuit to one-fourth or one-fifth that in existing circuits. The system is applicable to both resin-in-pulp and moving-bed-type ion exchange uranium recovery circuits.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has determined a method for calculating coal mine portable power cable thermal life for a specified temperature loading. This work was the culmination of a multifaceted research project involving (1) accelerated life tests of insulation and jacket materials and (2) steady-state and cyclical loading of cables. Composite Arrhenius curves were derived for common insulation and jacket materials to identify the key cable quality that precipitates thermal failure. Plots of temperature rise versus current for popular cable sizes were then referenced to develop a correspondence between cable life, based upon thermal degradation and current loading. Predictions of cable thermal life were made through integration over variable load cycles and, consequently variable operating temperatures. This procedure may have utility for both the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration and mining machine designers in determining the appropriate cable size for new equipment.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of small amounts of cobalt in nickel on the tensile properties and hardness of representative types of austenitic stainless steels . Cobalt substitutions for nickel up to 2 weight - percent were made in types 302 and 309 stainless steels . Data were obtained at room temperature for tensile strength , yield strength , percentage elongation , percentage reduction in area , and hardness . In type 302 steels , tensile strength and hardness increased with increased percentages of cobalt , percentage elongation and reduction in area decreased , and yield strength showed little change . Property changes were largely due to the reduction of nickel content rather than to the addition of cobalt . In type 309 steels , only minor variations were observed for the properties investigated ; the effects of the relatively snall cobalt substitutions and nickel reductions were somewhat reduced by the higher total alloy content .

"More than 73 million pounds of rock dust were used by the bituminous-coal-mining companies in the United States during 1930 to present or limit loss of life and destruction of property from explosions of gas and coal dust in underground mining operations, according to statistics compiled by the United States Bureau of Mines from reports furnished by mine operators. The mines using rock dust produced 65. 691, 753 tons of coal during the year, more than 30 percent of the total production of bituminous coal from underground mines in the United States that year. Although only 382 out of a total of 5,629 active underground bituminous mines applied rock dust to underground working as a precaution against explosions, they were chiefly the larger producing mines, employing 25.4 percent of all of the underground bitumious mine workers in the United States and accounting for 27.4 percent of the total number of man-hours worked underground at bituminous mines.a summary of the reports for the 382 mines using rock dust showed a total production of 96,691,755 tons of bituminous coal, 89,503 men employed underground, and 129,718,965 man-hours worked by the underground employees. (See tables 1 and 2.) These mines averaged 8.76 pounds of rock dust per ton of coal shown by reports from 385 mines using rock dust in 1932 (See table 3.)"

The apparatus described was developed for determining the kinetics of gas - solid reactions at high temperatures by measuring the volume of gas consumed with respect to time . This apparatus consists essentially of a horizontal precision- bore glass tube connecting a small reaction chamber in a furnace to a large constant - temperature reservoir . A drop of mercury in the tube separates the two sides of the system and serves as an indicator that moves at a speed proportional to the rate of gas consumption . The sensitivity of the apparatus depends inversely on both the density of the gas in the system and the cross - sectional area of the tube ; with a tube having an area of 0.079 cm² , the sensitivity for oxygen at 308 ° K and 0.5 atm is 20 cm/mg . The reproducibility of data with the volumetric apparatus is good .

Instrumental analysis is an indispensable tool to many phases of research on rare-earth metals and their compounds; therefore, the development of new and improved instrumental techniques is essential. This report describes an emission spectrometric analytical method using direct-current carbon-arc excitation of various rare-earth-oxide mixtures. Lanthanum oxide serves the dual purpose of an internal standard and a constant major constituent. The versatility of the method was demonstrated by three different applications: (a) Analysis of complex rare-earth concentrates; (b) determination of impurities in high-purity rare-earth oxides; and (c) detection of rare-earth elements in other types of matrices, such as those resulting from beneficiation of rare-earth ores. The average error of analysis in the concentration range of 0.2 to 10.0 percent was 14.6 percent for a group of complex synthetic mixtures of rare-earth oxides. An average error of analysis in the concentration range of 0.05 to 0.50 percent was 21 percent for a group of high-purity rare-earth oxides.
