The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coal, (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation, and (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coal and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the seventh of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. (See appendix.) This report covers Floyd County, KY., which comprises parts of the Paintsville, Prestonsburg, Harold, Hindman, and Pikeville quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale of 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all avail-able data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds up to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate but which may contain reserves based only on geologic inference, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps. Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

This report describes in detail a unique occurrence of fersmite, (Ca, Ce, Na) (Cb, Ti, Fe, Al)2 (0, OH, F)6, which occurs as small anhedral inclusions and intergrowths with a tantalum-free columbite found in the metamorphic complexes of Ravalli County, Mont. Chemical and crystallographic data along with the physical and optical properties agree in general with those given in the original description of fersmite from the Ural Mountains of Russia. X-ray diffraction data not given in the original description and more specific optical data have been determined. The Montana fersmite, now established as the second occurrence of this rare calcium-columbate mineral, was discovered during a routine Bureau of Mines mineralogical examination of a prospector's sample.

"Distinction between Tripoli and Diatomaceous EarthMuch confusion exists both in the literature and in the trade as to the proper use of the terms tripoli, tripolite diatomeceons or infusoriai earth, and kieseigunr. All of these terms are often used synonymously by the trade and even in mineralogists and other reference books. Actually, tripoli is a ma- is a material of definite and distinct physical and chemical properties and all of the other terms belong to a different material with just as definite and distinct properties.Originally the term tripolite (loosely called tripole) was given to a diatomaceous cart from Tripoli in Northern Africa. Dena (J.D. Dana, A System of Mineralogy 6th Ed.) calls this material tripolite and gives no authority for the use of the terms tripoli. Between 1880 and 1890 the deposits near Missouri, were opened and the material placed on the market as ""Tripoli"" no doubt due to its resemblance in some respect to the original tripolite or diatomaceous worth from Tripoli. Since that time the term tripoli has with increasing definitenesss been reserved for the Seneca material and other siliceous of similar origin and physical properties, while all siliceous material of organic origin, containing dilators, has been called diatomaceous earth (or its synonyms infusorial earth, kiselguhr, etc.). Rottenstone is sometimes classed with tripoli."

APPENDIX C - HOISTING SYSTEMS - AVAILABLE EQUIPMENT C 1 - Introduction A survey has been made of available hoisting equipment which has applications for use in metal and non-metal mine emergency escape hoist systems. The information was gathered from a number of sources, including representatives in the USBM and MESA, mine operators, personal visits and telephone interviews with manufacturers, field visits to inspect equipment, advertisements, catalogues and indices of manufacturers. Wherever possible, technical specifications and prices were checked out with the manufacturer, or supplier. The sections on individual sub-systems and components, such as automatic control systems, winches and controls, are not intended to be all encompassing surveys. Rather a reasonable number of representative units in each category are discussed. The sample is large enough to provide a general picture of the kind of equipment available, including the abilities and limitations and a reasonable price range. The Mining Law of 1910 , with amendments of 1914 and 1928 , is at present in force in the Dominican Republic . The first and basic mining law of the Republic was passed in 1876 , and although numerous changes and amendments have been made from time to time , the new laws and amendments thereto have not changed the original or basic law materially . However , these enactments have materially changed the legal methods governing the exploitation of the mineral resources of this country and have added new regulations and requirements to those concerning certain specific minerals , etc. The original or basic law still exists as it was first promulgated to protect the rights of the Dominican Republic itself , the rights of the landowner , and the rights of prospectors in general . The Mining Law of 1876 remained in force , without amendment , until it was superseded by the law of May 25 , 1904 , an enactment modeled after the Mexican mining law and designed especially to encourage the investment of

"INTRODUCTION Information on the gaseous products from the detonation of explosives has been obtained in two ways. In the first, the atmosphere in mines is analyzed after blasting, and in the second, the gases found after detonating an explosive in a testing apparatus are analyzed. The Bureau of Mines, in a cooperative research 3/ that compared data obtained in the field with those obtained in the testing station, showed that the results were not in entire agreement. The production of carbon monoxide was found to be governed chiefly by the oxygen balance of the explosive, but the production of oxides of nitrogen did not change in so simple a manner. Because of the increasing interest in correlations between the composition of the explosive and the production of toxic gases, it seemed desirable to continue the investigation.PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONAs field tests are both time consuming and expensive and as field results are affected by factors that are not always under control of or clearly evaluated by the operator, the purpose of this investigation is to develop a testing-station procedure that will reproduce the gaseous products quantitatively under known conditions analogous to those that may be expected in the field. This report describes the first phase of a general investigation designed to ascertain whether an electronic roof-testing device can be developed that will improve the ability to detect "loose" or "drummy" roof rock over that possible by striking the roof with a sounding bar and noting the character of the air vibrations with the unaided ear or the rock vibrations with the fingers. The amplitude, frequency content, and duration of the vibrations produced by striking solid and drummy roof rock with a hammer or sounding bar have been measured. Results disclosed that there is a significant difference between the characteristics of the vibrations produced in solid and drummy roof. This difference is such that the design of an electronic device to indicate quantitatively the condition of the roof rock appears possible. INTRODUCTION The conventional method of roof testing consists of striking the roof with a bar2/ and judging its soundness from the character of the air vibrations heard with the ear and/or the rock vibrations felt with the fingers -a procedure that depends upon the experience and the sensory abilities of the observer. Impact testing of a solid roof rock usually produces a sharp ping or click, whereas impact testing of a drummy roof rock produces a dull thud or drummy sound. This method of roof testing is, at most, only a qualitative test, and many roof rocks are difficult to classify as drummy or solid.

Because State and Federal agencies have limited the amount of sulfur oxides that can be discharged to the atmosphere, most copper smelters plan to convert the S02 in offgases to sulfuric acid. In some cases, however, it might be preferable to use a nonsmelting method to fix the sulfur in the form of a discardable product. Research by the Federal Bureau of Mines has shown that sulfur in copper concentrate can be converted into insoluble anhydrite (CaS04) by roasting the concentrate with lime (CaO). After leaching the calcine to recover metal values, the residue may be discarded without harm to the environment. The process can use a rougher flotation product, thus reducing separation costs and saving valuable minerals (for example, molybdenite) that are now lost in making cleaner concentrate. In tests, rougher concentrate was pelletized with the theoretical amount of lime and roasted for 1 hour in a 6-1/2-inch-ID by 11-foot-long rotary kiln at 700° C. Sulfur retention was about 97 percent. Leaching the calcine with 20 percent RCI extracted approximately 99 percent of the copper, 73 percent of the iron, and 91 percent of the molybdenum. After the molybdenum was removed from the leach solution by adsorption on activated carbon, copper with a purity in excess of 99 percent was obtained by cementation on sponge iron. The strip solution then could be spray-roasted at 500° C to recover the RCI for recycle and obtain F2O3 as a byproduct.

The Bureau of Mines developed a flotation method for concentrating spiral tailing produced from pilot plant tests on the Champion mine ore fines . The feed material contained about 49 percent Fe and 15 percent SiO2 and was posed mostly of specular hematite , muscovite , and chlorite . Bench- scale , batch flotation research developed a reagent suite composed of tall oil - fatty acid , fuel oil , sulfuric acid , sodium fluoride , and sodium silicate for recovery of iron minerals in the froth product . Concentrate made with the reagent suite contained 87.3 percent of the iron and analyzed 65.6 percent Fe and 1.9 percent SiO2 . Continuous flotation tests were made with a nominal feed rate of 400 lb /hr , but without middling recirculation . Using nearly the same amount and complement of reagents as in the batch tests , three similar continuous tests gave concentrates averaging 63.9 percent Fe and 3.1 percent Sio while recovering about 86 percent of the iron .

Hydrocarbon gases, primarily methane but also the C2 through C5 paraffins, the C2 and C3 olefins and possibly the C4 and C5 olefins, are byproducts of coal formation. Although it is generally believed that coal formation occurred at temperatures below 200° C, most experimental work on gas formation from coal has been performed at temperatures between 200° and 1,000°C. The objective of this Bureau of Mines experiment was to determine if observable changes in the gases from coal could be produced at temperatures below 200° C in relatively short periods of time. The experiment involved heating coal samples from six coalbeds at constant temperatures and analyzing evolved gases. The composition of the gases at three temperatures was compared. At 35° C, over 99 pct of the gas is methane; at 125° and 150°, methane constitutes approximately half of the hydrocarbon gas. Isobutane and pentane are the predominant higher hydrocarbons at temperatures between 100° and 150° C.

To reduce operator exposure to noise from vibrating screens at coal preparation plants. Background Hearing loss is one of the most common occupational illnesses in the United States. In the U.S. mining industry, hearing loss is 2.5 to 3 times greater than what is expected for the average population that is not exposed to occupational noise. Furthermore, studies by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) showed that by age 50, 90% of coal miners have a hearing impairment versus only 10% of the population that is not exposed to occupational noise. A NIOSH cross-sectional survey of coal preparation plants showed that 43.5% of employees were overexposed to noise. The study also found that vibrating screens were one of the top five loudest types of equipment at these plants?as well as the most numerous?making them a key noise source to address.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating surfactants added to water sprays to enhance the control of dust during coal mining operations. The objective of the present work was to establish the general applicability of adding sulfate ion to anionic surfactant solutions in order to improve wetting action. This was pursued through laboratory wettability testing of four anionic surfactants and one nonionic surfactant in combination with various concentrations of sulfate ion. The experimental results demonstrated that the addition of sulfate ion enhanced the wetting characteristics of all the anionic surfactants when applied to hard-to-wet coals, while easy-to-wet coal showed more complex wetting behavior. Sulfate ion in the presence of nonionic surfactant enhanced wetting only slightly or not at all. Surface tension measurements of the dilute aqueous surfactant-sulfate anion solutions indicated this property was not important in coal-wetting phenomena, as long as the value was below the critical value for coal. Sulfate ion helps surfactant reduce surface tension but primarily appears to affect wetting action by altering the adsorption characteristics of surfactant on the coal surface.

Interim performance specifications are presented for carbon monoxide, methane, and air velocity transducers used in the Bureau of Mines intrinsically safe mine monitoring system. These specifications give quantitative values or qualitative descriptions of the transducers, including environmental parameters and monitoring system measurement and maintenance requirements as recommended by the Bureau of Mines. Commercially available transducer modules and prototype modules are listed together with selected characteristics.

World investment 10 all mineral and mining industry sectors is not available. However, partial information available provides some information useful for analysis. Information available in this section covers limited geographic information on investment in the steel industry, limited information for petroleum industry capital spending, and total U.S. foreign investment in comparison to the mineral-related sectors (tables 13, 14, and 15). Annual steel industry investment is available for the European Community, almost all countries within the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), Latin America, and other countries with significant mineral industries, such as Canada, Japan, and the United States. Although information was not available for 1992, data for 1991 indicate that for those countries aforementioned, total investment increased by 8 %. However, investment patterns were very different within the different groups of countries. While the European Community had a net increase of 12 %, dominated by an almost °40 % increase in Germany, EFTA member countries had a 26 % decrease in investment for the same period. Investment in EC countries was almost seven times that of EFT A countries. Japan's investment in the iron and steel industry, by far the largest of those available, almost twice that of the EC and almost four times that of the United States, increased by more than 20 %. In North America, investment in Canada and the United States decreased. Almost all of Latin America decreased investment in the sector. The notable exception was Mexico, with a 60 % increase. Changes in Mexico's investment policies of the recent past, its economic growth, and privatization of its iron and steel industry are some of the reasons for such an increase. The other country covered individually in Latin America, where investment in the iron and steel industry increased, although slightly, was Argentina. This limited information does not allow a comprehensive analysis of global industry trend, which in turn impacts many other mineral commodities, and with the transition in many countries within Europe and Central Eurasia that are now effecting the steel industries of the countries that were members of the U.S.S.R. and its CMEA partners, it is most regrettable that comprehensive and comparable data, both current and historic, on investment in this area are not available.

[In the original Norris and Fay method for determining selenium, selenious acid is reduced by an excess of standard thicsulfate in accordance with the following reaction: H2Se03 + 4Na2S203 + 4HC1 = Na2SeS406 + Na2S406 + 4NaC1 + X20. (1) The excess thiosutfate is then back-titrated with standard iodine solution. The disadvantages of ouch a method are obvious. On an unknown sample, the quantity of thiosutfate required would be difficult to determine; a definite excess is required, but large back titrations would be undesirable. Inasmuch as thiosulfate is decomposed by acid, considerable error may be introduced in this method, the amount depending on the acidity, temperature, concentration of excess thiosulfate, duration of contact between thiosulfate and acid, and other factors, In a critical study of the Norris and Fay method, Coleman and McCrosky3/ show that the method is accurate to less than .1 part per thousand if the excess of this sulfate Is not greater than 5 ml. of 0.1 N solution (in 1.0 ml. of 0.x4 N sulfuric acid) whether the titration is made at 0° or 20°C. A greater excess produced unsatisfactory values at either temperature. Coleman and McCrosky regulated the excess thiosulfate by adding 5-ml. portions of thiosulfate solution followed by the addition of 1 to 3 drops of 2.5 percent potassium iodide in the presence of starch. If a starch-iodine blue color formed locally around the drops of potassium Iodide, the reduction of selenious acid was not complete. On stirring the solution, the local blue color fades and another 5-ml. portion of thiosulfate is added. When addition of potassium iodide fails to produce a local blue color, reduction of selenious acid is complete, and the excess thiosulfate is then back-titrated with standard Iodine solution. The number of equivalents involved in the reduction of selenious acid by either thiosulfate or iodide is the same, and therefore no correction need be made for the potassium iodide. This procedure is much better than the original Norris-Fay titration, but acidity and time would stilt be rather critical factors subject to variation with individual technique. Also, the method still requires the lose of two standard solutions, a rather undesirable factor from the standpoint of routine application.]

Enormous quantities of organic wastes are produced each year in the United States. The total amount is in excess of 2 billion tons and at least 880 million tons of this is moisture- and ash-free organic material (dry organic solids), representing a potential energy source of significant magnitude that is not being utilized. Bureau of Mines scientists have developed methods for converting these wastes to convenient energy forms. This report itemizes and evaluates for the first time in detail the quantities and sources of moisture- and ash-free organic material contained in manure, urban refuse, industrial wastes, sewage solids, and agricultural wastes in the United States. Furthermore, estimates are presented for amounts of organic wastes collected or concentrated. The potential for fuel, either oil or gas, from both the total organic wastes generated and those collected or concentrated is also estimated.

In This report, factors which currently enter into the design, manufacture, and quality assurance of explosion-proof enclosures are reviewed, with special emphasis given to the sealing concepts and sealants/cements, per se, for lenses. The physical and mechanical properties of a number of representative sealants and adhesives are measured, and found to exhibit great variance, with few discernible trends which might afford a firm base on which to establish minimum property standards. Accordingly, acceptance criteria for adhesives and sealants are suggested based on the survivability of an explosion-proof enclosure as a structure rather than upon the minimum mat real properties of its constituents. Procedures or surface preparation of adherends, and for quality assurance, also are proposed.

Extensive studies have been made of the various effluents found in the Synthane coal-to-gas process. Analyses have been made of the waters, gases, and trace elements present in some of the streams. Results of analyses show the water effluents are the area where extensive research is needed.

The Bureau of Mines investigated preheating of continuously fed, fragmented ferrous scrap charges by furnace offgases and utilizing substitutes for imported fluorspar to condition electric steelmaking slags. Three types of continuous scrap charging procedures were investigated to determine electrical energy consumption in a I-st (short ton) electric arc furnace. Cold and preheated scrap charges were continuously fed at rates averaging 37.5 and 43.7lb/min, respectively. The feed rate varied appreciably from test to test owing to hangup of the scrap in the charge bin. Approximately 7 pct less electrical energy was consumed in melting scrap preheated to 8400 to 1,1100 F by furnace off-gases than in melting cold scrap. Overall energy consumptions were 888 kW'h/st for cold scrap, 829 kW'h/st for preheated scrap" and 637 kW'h/st for conventional backcharged scrap. Stack gases from scrap preheating averaged 1200 F and a flow rate of 1,615 scfm compared with 2200 F and 1,302 sefm for cold-charged scrap. Slag conditioners tested included synthetic fluorspar, boric acid, hydroboracite, used aluminum potlining wastes and aluminum anode tailing wastes, and Sorelflux B. The boron-containing conditioners fluidized the slags the best, followed in order by the conditioners containing fluorine and titanium.
