An electronic delay detonator (EDD) consisting of a digital-base electronic delay module and a conventional instantaneous detonator module, designed for series connections with a special adjustable-output blasting machine, is described and shown to provide a delay time accuracy some four to twelve times higher than that of pyrotechnic millisecond and decisecond delay detonators, together with the other performance characteristics necessary for practical use. Also described is a blasting design system which allows effective reduction of ground and air vibration, through the use of EDDs with optimum delay times as determined by accurate computer simulation based on wave form and other data obtained from an on-site single-shot test blast.

A discrete element computer program, DMC (Distinct Motion Code), has been used for several years to simulate blasting-induced rock motion. Recent enhancements of DMC's capabilities have included addition of an algorithm that couples together rock motion and gas flow. This allows the user to specify a particular explosive which also specifies equation-of-state and other parameters necessary to model explosive gas flow from the blastwell. Rock loading by the flowing gas is calculated automatically. The mechanism for calculating the rock loading is the subject of this paper. The rock motion effects the gas flow calculation by changing the porosity. DMC is currently being used on a SUN SPARCstation 2 computer workstation.

The use of a thin-film piezoelectric stress gauge to determine the pressure profile in a detonating explosive has been demonstrated. These PVDF gauges have measured, in the borehole, the Chapman-Jouget pressure and the release adiabat of the detonation products for several explosives including ANFO and ANFO/emulsion mixtures. The technique can provide: (1) a direct measure of the blasting stimulus, (2) a sensitive QA tool for the blaster, and (3) a means to examine the magnitude and effects of preshock from adjacent bore holes. The PVDF pressure gauge is self powered, can measure pressure from a few bars to 400 kbars, has high time resolution (0.05 µsec), and is easy and economical to use.

The practice of dual initiation using precise timing from electronic detonators in boreholes is thought to be beneficial for increasing fragmentation at a desired location in the rock strata. This increased capacity for fragmentation is understood to be a product of both the collision of detonation waves in the explosive column and an increased energy liberation rate, each resulting from dual initiation. In addition, the collision of shock waves from two adjacent blast holes is suggested to improve fragmentation at the location the two shock waves meet, which can be controlled with precise timing. This paper presents the results from scaled laboratory experiments where converging detonation waves and shock waves were studied.

The Avalauncher has been an integral tool for avalanche mitigation work for close to 50 years. With their ability to place a kilogram of high explosives up to two thousand meters away, they routinely serve as a short range alternative to military artillery. The Avalauncher’s roots can be traced to a pneumatic baseball pitching machine used by Major League Baseball teams in the United States in the late 1950s. Throughout the decades, many modifications have been made to both the launcher and its projectiles. Current technology has allowed the Avalauncher to attain greater accuracies and operational range. In this paper I plan to cover not only the history of the Avalauncher but also explore its potential future.

Secluential blasting is one of the most popular methods in blasting. tiowever, it is well known that an emulsion explosive can be dead-pressed by dynamic pressure generated by the previous detonation. It is difficult to gain the expected blasting performance due to tb.e malfunction of explosive caused by deadpressing and shock desensitization. Such malfunction of an explosive is undesirable for safety blasting operation. Voids in the emulsion explosives will considerably affect the performance of explosives such as sensitivity, detonation velocity (DV), pressure-resistance and so on. To clarify the detonability and the performance of precompressed emulsion explosives, the DV was measured. Three types of microballoon or micro bubble ; two types of glass microballoon(GMB), resin microballoon@MB) and chemical gas bubble ; were used as sensitizers for the sample emulsion expiosives. The underwater explosion test was carried out to load dynamic pressure into the sample explosives. The dynamic pressure was generated by the detonation of a donor explosive, and the DV of the sample explosives as acceptor was measured by ionized gap terminals. The dynamic pressure level and initiation interval for the donor and the acceptor were chosen as experimental factors. The detonability was carefully investigated at short initiation intervals taking into consideration the interaction between same delays caused by the deviation of the ignition time of the electric detonators. From these experiments, the following results were obtained ; A) The DV of precompressed emulsion explosives was low compared with that of uncompressed emulsion explosives in all pressure conditions. B) The decrease of DV in the sample explosives sensitized by GMB s was larger than that of DV in the sample explosives sensitized by RMBs or chemical gas bubbles. C) The recovery of the detonability occurred rapidly in the sample explosives sensitized by RMBs and chemical gas bubbles. However, a long period was needed for the recovery of detonability in the sample explosives sensitized by GME! s. It was concluded that the type of microballoon and micro bubble significantly influenced the detonability of precompressed emulsion explosives.

The high temperature and high pressure of an explosive detonation can be used for the production of nanomaterials. The controlled detonation of explosive compositions along with the collection and characterization of reaction products encompasses a process known as detonation synthesis. The primary advantage of the method of detonation synthesis is the possibility for producing monocrystalline nanoparticles with diameters of less than 10 nm. In order to successfully synthesize nanomaterials via the detonation process, it is necessary that the explosive detonation is conducted in a sealed environment. This environment when pulled to a vacuum or purged with inert gas such as argon will reduce the oxidation of detonation reaction products. Detonation synthesis testing is currently being conducted in a 1.8 cubic meters (m3) (64.3 cubic feet (ft3)) ellipsoidal pressure vessel consisting of two interlocking half shells. The testing involves the controlled detonation of cast mixtures of Cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine (RDX) and 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene (TNT) in conjunction with siliceous compounds to produce nanocrystalline diamond and silicon carbide. Alternative detonation environments including the presence of a cooling medium such as water or dry ice to absorb residual, post detonation, thermal energy and enhance the stability of the materials being produced have improved yield. Modifications to the explosive charge composition have an effect on the type and quantity of materials that can be produced. Doping of explosive charges with various organic and inorganic compounds has shown promise in the synthesis of materials that are difficult or uneconomical to produce through other methods. This paper outlines the process development of detonation synthesis facilities. Preparation of the pressure vessel to create a suitable detonation environment for the production of nanomaterials is examined. Formulation of explosive charge compositions and considerations involving test charge initiation are discussed in detail. Experimental results and analysis from initial testing as well as plans for future research are also evaluated.

Ammonium nitrate in explosives and sulfides in reactive ground have the potential to react at ambient and elevated temperatures resulting in premature detonations. The Australasian Explosives Industry Safety Group (AEISG) published, in 2006, a Code of Practice1 for elevated temperature and reactive ground. This paper reviews the chemistry, general reactivity of various ground types, elevated temperature hazards, and testing protocols contained in the code, that are industry best practices for managing ammonium nitrate-based explosives in elevated temperature and reactive ground conditions. In addition to reviewing the 5th edition AEISG Code of Practice, data is presented validating the recommended sampling guidelines within the code. Dyno Nobel has been screening reactive ground samples and performing sleep time testing since the code of practice was first released. Test results demonstrate the effects of samples that are allowed to oxidize before testing and are shown to be subsequently less reactive and not representative of the actual hazards facing mining blasting operations. Results also show that for a given reactive ground sample, reaction times decrease with increasing temperature. Data also quantify the delay in reaction time given by inhibited products. These results emphasize the importance of proper sampling and preparation of samples to accurately characterize elevated temperature and reactive ground hazards. They also demonstrate the efficacy of inhibited products in managing these hazards

Numerous agencies in the Executive Branch of the United States Federal Government have regulatory jurisdiction over the explosives industry. These agencies develop the rules by which the explosives industry must operate, and many have the authority to enforce those rules. Likewise, there are entities in the Legislature that have oversight of those agencies and develop the laws that agencies must operate under. These entities in the Legislative Branch are Congressional Committees. Each committee has their respective jurisdictional authority over various agencies and issues. There are several Congressional Committees with jurisdiction over the agencies that govern the explosives industry and they differ slightly between the House of Representatives and the Senate. This paper discusses this division of power as it relates to the explosives industry. Each branch is responsive to the public and the processes through which each promulgates regulation and legislation require public input in different forms. Options for civic involvement for engaging each of these bodies of power in their respective processes are presented. The differences between legislation and regulation are highlighted along with the processes by which each are promulgated. A proper understanding of the governmental mechanics that affect the explosives industry are critical for the industry to be able to be proactive in playing a role in these processes in a democratic way.

Toxic fume concentrations from industrial mining explosives depend somewhat upon the type of rock (or other strata) confinement. Though traditional detonation theory disregards this influence, the work principal from thermodynamics reveals it, when the violent interactions that transpire within the rock blast are taken into proper account. Resolution of the work principle technique requires total thermodynamic equilibrium under constraint, so the nonequilibrium dynamics is rendered in that way, using an old trick from theoretical mechanics that revises the representation of forces. The rock pressure reduces to a four-component sum: the rock compressive strength and natural atmospheric pressure, as reckoned quasi-statically, and the gravitational influence and reversed inertial resistance, as reckoned dynamically. Tabulated specie concentrations and graphical trends reveal the dependency upon rock pressure, rock temperature and the fuel-oil percentage in ammonium nitrate mixtures (ANFO), used to illustrate the model. Rigid-wall test chambers have notable ullage (residual space), where rapid expansion influences the reaction quenching, yielding a fume spectrum unlike that for rock confinement; reported rock tests are therefore used for comparisons. For the thermodynamic regime where quenching occurs, seven concentrations are resolved, including carbon monoxide (CO) and total nitrogen oxides (NOX). Their trends yield inferences regarding the way unwanted charge desensitization from transitory hole-to-hole wave impact in conjunction with reduced rock pressure can yield nasty toxic fumes, the dark rusty cloud phenomenon!

In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s substantial resources were devoted to research focused on producing oil from the vast oil shale reserves in the western United States. Since the oil is solidified in the pore space of the shale, extracting it in production level quantities presented monumental technical challenges. Major advances were made in the methods used to extract oil from the shale in large quantities. Extraction methods evolved to culminate in the underground in-situ retorting process. In-situ retorting relied on explosive blasting of the shale to fragment the rock and induce sufficient porosity and permeability for a burn front to propagate through the oil shale. That burn front consumes some of the oil and liberates a substantial portion of it (~30%) for collection and further processing. Oil shale retorting is a blasting intensive process where the entire retort is rubblized in one very large, delay timed blast. Retort 7 in Western Colorado consumed 540,857 lb of slurry explosive to rubblized 348,940 tons of oil shale. Current rock blasting fragmentation predictive capabilities have evolved substantially since these retorts were designed and tested. It is the purpose of this study to simulate the explosively induced fragmentation of oil shale using state-of-the-art computer codes and material models and to infer retort design implications for future development.

The development of the society within the world has resulted in a substantial increase in the scale of such industrial projects. However, the expansion of such activity has been matched by an increased public awareness of environmental issues, particularly when it occurs in relatively close proximity to residential areas. One of the most troublesome issues facing the mining, quarrying and construction industries when carrying out their blasting activities is that of ground vibration. Because, blasting induced ground vibration can reach to very far distances from the source and has the potential for damage to concern to the inhabitants of property.

A goal of all mine operators is to optimize the breakage of the inplace rock to achieve maximum excavating efficiency. The use of the seismograph at Kennecott Copper Corporation's Nevada Mines Division, open pit mine in Ely, Nevada, has demonstrated that optimum blastability can be predicted by knowing the seismic velocity of the inplace rock. The relationship of seismic velocity to the quantity of the explosive required to achieve adequate breakage of the material can be determined. Once quantified, this relationship can be used by the mine operator to obtain the optimum drill pattern and powder factor for breaking the material to be excavated. A substantial savings in primary and secondary drilling and blasting costs can result from using the seismograph for blastability determination.

The formation of NOx fumes is an undesired occurrence and is dependent on a variety of variables. Methods for detection of such fumes with blast analysis tools are available using color schemes for grading, but no quantification tools to measure concentration and cloud totals exist today. In cooperation with DIRS (Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Laboratory) at RIT in Rochester, NY, Austin Powder has been looking for methods and techniques to identify and quantify total amounts of NOx by capturing cloud activity via a video feed from a drone in combination with measuring NOx and subsequent cloud modeling (i.e., plume segmentation). To accurately measure fume events, Austin Powder and the RIT team have been collaborating in performing small scale blasts at an Austin test facility and then transferring knowledge learned to full scale blasts at customer sites. The collected data will allow to identify any relationships between the total amount of explosives used and the quantity of NOx produced. The analysis of the total amounts of NOx and identification of blast areas those fumes originate from will help to better understand key factors that contribute to their occurrence as well as to quantify the severity of such events. By quantifying the magnitude and concentration of fumes generated by non-ideal detonations, the blasting technique can be optimized to minimize unwanted environmental effects and improve public perception of blasting as a necessary component of societal progress

ANFO is the most used industrial blasting agent in the world, and is often used as a reference for comparison of other explosives. It is known to work very well under dry conditions in large borehole diameters, whilst in small borehole diameters increasing amounts of toxic fumes (CO, NO and NOz) can be formed. In underground blasting, problems can also occur with reduced visibility caused by unreacted ammonium nitrate and overall composition of the detonation fumes. ANFO is made by mixing Ammonium Nitrate Porous Prills (AN-PP) and fuel oil. We have measured velocity of detonation (VOD), toxic fumes and visibility after blasting of ANFO in 54x2 mm steel tubes, and the differences are remarkable: By using an AN-PP grade developed for underground blasting and small diameters, the following can be obtained:

Number of mine accidents occurred in Indian surface mines are due to poor quality of explosives and blasting accessories. Amlori open cast project is one of the major coal producing projects in India. Standard drilling and blasting parameters are used to achieve desired productivity of the mine. 150 and 260 mm diameter blast holes are used for blasting in coal and overburden benches. Most of shovel benches are 12 to 16 m in height and dragline benches vary from 25 to 30 m. High-energy bulk emulsions are used for blasting. The cup density and velocity of detonation of bulk emulsion explosives are 1100 to 1200 kg/m3 and 3.8 to 4.5 km/s respectively. An incident occurred on fire bench of Amlori open cast mines during mucking of blasted muck.

The surface vibration field in the area above an underground mine prior to its development has been investigated, in order to assess the vibration levels expected in existing buildings and in the planned mine facilities from future underground blasts. Shots of 50 and 100 kg of explosive placed in drillholes at depths of 100 to 150 m were fired, and the vibration events were recorded using an array of 40 seismographs in a 400 m square grid, covering a 2×2 km area. Contours of isovelocity were obtained for each shot, showing some directional transmission patterns. Propagation laws were obtained from the results of each shot and also from the bulk of data, both for the whole area and dividing it into four quadrants. The shift of dominant frequency with distance was also analyzed.
