The relevance of reliability studies for deep foundations is considered in this paper with special reference to pile foundations. Attention is drawn to uncertainties related to applied loads, the load-carrying capacity and the safety margin of a pile foundation. The essential steps in a reliability study are outlined. An essential goal of any study is the determination of the Reliability Index or Safety Index under different conditions of loading and operation. Calculations concerning probability of failure or success require an assumption to be made concerning the probability distribution of the safety margin. The significance of this and other assumptions should be clearly understood. Reliability approaches should be used to complement conventional deterministic studies.

"DISCLAIMER: the statements presented herein are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of US DoD or its Components.ABSTRACTProgress on the $750M lock project on the Monongahela River was derailed by discovery of large anomalies in the 6.5-7-ft dia. drilled shafts of the new river wall foundation. The anomalies were located 45 to 50’ below the top of the wall at the critical shaft-to-wall interface, and ranged in thickness from several inches to 2-plus feet. A Specialty team, comprised of representatives from the contractor, the Government, and structural design consultants, was formed to evaluate the extent of the problem and the impact on the new lock wall. With no standard method in place, the Government took the lead to develop acceptance criteria for the repairs while the contractor took the lead to identify the repair means and methods. The Government developed a detailed Quality Control plan to capture and document all of the repair data and to approve each shaft repair in a timely manner. This paper provides an overview of the anomalies encountered and the need for repairs; discusses the details of the repair plan; and provides details on the unique quality control measures employed to verify the repairs. By developing and adhering to a detailed quality control plan, the structural integrity of all of the shafts was successfully restored.INTRODUCTIONThe new Charleroi Locks Project is currently under construction by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the region, the Corps of Engineers is modernizing the series of locks and dams on the Monongahela River. One facet of this modernization is replacement of the existing Locks #4 (aka Charleroi Locks) located upstream of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with new and larger capacity locks. The relative location of the project is shown on Fig. 1. The original construction of twin locks (56’x720’ & 56’x360’) and the fixed-crest dam was completed in 1932, with lock walls supported on timber pile foundations. The fixed crest dam was replaced with a gated dam in the 1960’s. The existing lock is undersized and in poor condition and thus needs to be replaced. The project requires the construction of the new river chamber adjacent to the existing land chamber which must remain operational to navigation throughout the construction. In order to accomplish this, the lock walls need to be constructed in the wet. The river wall was constructed using two construction methods referred to on the project as “cofferbox” and “non-cofferbox” construction."

There are safety concerns related to operation of heavy equipment over coal combustion residual (CCR) impoundments during construction of the impoundment closure programs. As part of a pilot study prior to a full-scale closure construction, an access pathway and working platform were designed and constructed to facilitate equipment access for construction of deep soil mixing (DSM) zones on the ash delta of a CCR impoundment. The access pathway and working platform was constructed using shallow mass mixing with cement at the CCR surface to address safety concerns related to the geotechnical behavior of CCR. This paper describes the data from the instrumentation system which was implemented to monitor the geotechnical performance of the CCR during the pilot study. The instrumentation system included monitoring of the ground movement, vibration, and porewater pressure within the ash delta of the CCR impoundment during a pre-construction load testing, equipment mobilization over the access pathway, and DSM column installation over the working platform. INTRODUCTION A deep soil mixing (DSM) pilot study was conducted at a coal combustion residual (CCR) surface impoundment to evaluate mix designs and construction techniques for the regulatory closure. The DSM columns will create a wall which will separate and retain the CCR in a consolidated footprint separate from the closure by removal portion of the footprint and provide a barrier between the two areas of the surface impoundment. Historically, the surface impoundment received CCRs including fly ash, bottom ash, boiler slag, and gypsum, along with other byproducts produced from flue gas desulfurization (FGD). The predominant CCR in this impoundment were fly ash and bottom ash. The primary goals of the DSM pilot study were to assess the mix design strengths and to evaluate DSM construction techniques that could reach the design mixing depths of up to 90 ft. The DSM test columns were installed on the CCR delta approximately 500 ft from the nearest impoundment dikes. Another objective of the pilot study was to develop, construct, and monitor an access pathway for safe passage and movement of construction equipment on the CCR delta.

"The recently opened Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago campus was a 2012 OPA runner-up. The dramatic elliptical shaped dome of this structure tells only part of this structure’s story. The underground automated storage and book retrieval system below ground required excavations as deep as 55 ft (17 m). The system that allows the University to store many of its publications well below grade also required an approximately 50 ft (15 m) clear span for the perimeter walls between the lower level and street level slabs. The latter requirement allows the conveyors to operate freely to retrieve and transport publications up to the lobby level. The design-assist-build team worked together to develop the most cost-effective solution for below-grade work in this challenging urban and geologic environment.The perimeter of the new oval-shaped library is over 620 ft (189 m) long and sits in a central location on campus—adjacent to the Regenstein Library and two city streets and the Henry Moore sculpture, which commemorates the location of the first self-sustaining controlled nuclear reaction. The new library construction not only had to meet challenging structural and geotechnical requirements, but also had to be sensitive to its active and historic surroundings. The soils at the site consist of about 25 ft (7.6 m) of sand, followed by lean clay, generally increasing in stiffness to the top of the dolomitic limestone. Five to 10 ft (1.5 to 3 m) pockets of saturated sand also lie on the north side of the site at about 45 ft (13.7 m) below grade. The top of weathered rock varies in elevation from 59 ft (18 m) below grade in the south to 69 ft (21 m) in the north. There is 1 to 2 ft (30 to 60 cm) of weathered rock. Groundwater at the site is about 7 ft (2 m) below grade.The new structure would extend 55 ft (17 m) below grade through saturated sand strata and into weathered rock for part of the structure’s footprint, so it was critical that the new permanent retention system minimize groundwater seepage laterally through the structure’s wall as well as piping through the weathered rock below the structure. The perimeter walls had to be very stiff to minimize ground movement around the structure’s perimeter due to the significant clear span between slabs."

"Soil mixed seepage cutoff walls are increasingly being used in levee and dam modification projects nationwide. An important aspect of their overall quality depends greatly on the language included in the specifications. Depending on the method (e.g. vertical axis auger mixing, cutter soil mixing, or trench mixing techniques) the specifications are a blend of prescriptive and performance based contract language with differences in element construction, element connections, quality control/quality assurance, and work area restrictions. Many of the existing specifications were initially developed by contractors in whole or in part, and can contain restrictive provisions favoring the authoring contractor. In response to these challenges, basic soil mixing fundamentals were revisited and recent lessons learned incorporated, resulting in the development of a new specification for soil mixed seepage cutoff walls that provides adaptability for the various construction methods. The new specification addresses quality control, quality assurance, equipment independence (elimination of restrictive contract language), rig instrumentation.INTRODUCTIONSoil mixing has been used in the construction of seepage barriers for over 30 years. Most soil mixed project primarily use the wet-rotary-shaft, wet-rotary-end or wet-vertical panel methods (reference FHWA Deem Mixing Manual Figure 137). One of the first major soil mixing seepage barriers was constructed in the Jackson Dam in Wyoming. Since then the use of soil mixing for seepage barriers has increased significantly and this specialized domain of construction which was solely procured by RFP methods, is now increasingly being specified in projects issued for bid. The Bid documents require more careful specification writing than RFP methods because the RFP methods allowed detailed proposals by the contractor. Therefore the development of soil mixing specifications began with contractors preparing the specifications. This paper addressed some of these issues, and proposes methods to address these resulting concerns. The resolution of these issues considers several aspects: 1) Assessment of binder injection, 2) Evaluation of mixing index, and 3) Verification testing."

"The construction of Powisle station of Metro Warsaw Line 2, in Poland, required the execution of two shafts next to an urban road tunnel adjacent to the Vistula River. The shafts were linked by three conventionally mined tunnels to be excavated 10 m below the water table level, into an upper sandy and sandy silty layer and a lower stiff clayey stratum. After a failed dig attempt under the protection of jet grouting and forepoling, it was decided to deal with the tunnels excavation problem by using the ground freezing technique as a temporary, non-polluting geotechnical treatment, keeping in service the upper road tunnel. The planning of the activities and the executive phases had a significant importance for the success of the work. For work scheduling reasons the mixed system was adopted, i.e. using both the liquid nitrogen system and the brine freezing method. The freezing process management, with a real time evaluation of the soil temperature measured by thermometric strings and an accurate monitoring of the overlying road tunnel structure, allowed the tunnel excavation and lining stages to be performed under difficult conditions, without water leaking from the frozen ground shell, within the expected times and saving extra costs.INTRODUCTIONThe new Underground Line 2 in Warsaw connects the eastern and western part of the town. One of the most critical interferences was the under passing of the Vistula river and of the Wislostrada motorway tunnel, a very congested motorway along the western bank of the river, with the construction of the new station Powisle. The construction of the station required the excavation of two shafts, using the top-down system with the creation of intermediate slabs while deepening the excavation.The shafts were used for the extraction of four Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), two approaching from the Vistula river side (east-side) and two approaching from downtown (west-side); in order to connect the two shafts was foreseen the realization of three tunnels, two for the underground lines and the central one for the exchanging passenger platform. These tunnels were underpassing the “Wislostrada Road Tunnel” and interfered with this tunnel foundation, which consisted of diaphragm walls (DW), the “barrettes” (Figure 1).Due to the variable geological conditions at the site, the first excavation stage, with a temporary underground support constructed of horizontal jet grouting columns and forepoling, caused the North tunnel face failure, that required an immediate filling of the empty cavities with lean mix concrete under the Wislostrada tunnel slabs. Thereafter, the recovering attempt with the grout injections could not be completed because of the development of heaves induced on the tunnel structures (Bringiotti et al. 2016). In those conditions the tunnel excavation with traditional technologies appeared to be very problematic, with high risk for the structural safety of the Wislostrada tunnel. This would have meant longer duration for the works and higher costs for the General Contractor as well as for the city Council."

"In recent years, developers have had to deal with complexities associated with numerous cases of deep basement construction in built-up areas. Design and construction of deep excavation support systems in urbanised zones come with many technical challenges. Restricted working spaces often render the use of temporary struts as wall restraint systems unpopular, as working space needs to be maximised. Also, tie-back anchors are often inapplicable due to the existence of adjacent structures. Therefore, developing alternative restraint systems for deep basement structures in builtup areas is becoming increasingly important to the present day basement engineer.This paper is centred on the design, construction and monitoring of enabling works for deep basement structures on three sites in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. Traditional tieback anchorage and propping systems were inapplicable on the sites. As alternatives, separate novel wall restraint systems were developed and adopted, to enable excavation on each of the three sites.Performances of the novel wall restraint systems, as well as the responses of adjacent structures were monitored. Numerical modelling and field monitoring results show the three alternative wall restraint systems to be safe and effective. The paper also highlights the advantages of the novel solutions over conventional methods.INTRODUCTIONRecently, deep basement structures have become popular components of urban building developments. As pointed out by Pearlman et al., 2004, this could be attributed to the inadequacy of surface parking spaces in urbanised zones, while underground parking facilities are also believed to improve both aesthetic and commercial qualities of urban structures.However, while the incorporation of basement structure into new urban development appeals to developers and architects, the engineering design and construction aspects of basement works typically come against a whole lot of complexities and challenges. As highlighted by Wong, 2002, engineering problems associated with basement construction in built-up areas are numerous, some of these include; complicated sub-soil conditions, dealing with excessive active pressures, complex temporary works, proximity of sensitive adjacent structures, high level hazards to construction workmen and surrounding community, inadequate working space, etc."

"INTRODUCTIONThe new $650 million power block at Santee Cooper’s Cross Generating Station in Cross, South Carolina is being constructed on driven pre-stressed concrete (PSC) piles. S&ME, as geotechnical subconsultant to Parsons Energy and Chemical Group, was responsible for pile analysis and design to meet the site’s geotechnical and seismic challenges. Selection, analysis and design of the PSC piles included consideration of the following:• Column and equipment support loads ranging up to 500 to 1000 kips (2224 to 4448 kN).• Incorporation of the 2000 International Building Code seismic provisions.• A thick upper soft clay and loose, liquefiable sand.• Potential for karst-related features in the calcareous Santee Limestone.GEOTECHNICAL CHARACTERIZATIONThe near-surface site geology consists of (in order of increasing depth): (1) Pleistocene sediments, (2) the Santee Limestone (considered part of the Orangeburg Group) of Eocene age, and (3) the Black Mingo Formation of the Eocene/Paleocene age (refer to the shear-wave profile in Figure 4). Pleistocene clays and silts are generally soft and will settle significantly if subjected to loading by heavy grade-supported structures while the interbedded sands are generally loose. Where submerged below the shallow groundwater table, the sands were determined to be liquefiable during a strong earthquake.The Santee Limestone is a nearly white to yellow fossiliferous and partly glauconitic rock consisting chiefly of calcium carbonate. Observations of the rock core samples from the site indicate that it can range from hard crystalline limestone (primarily in thin layers) to a lightly cemented sand. In terms of rock strength, the Santee Limestone is generally very soft to soft, depending on the cementation and other depositional characteristics."

"The demand for underground parking in South Florida has increased as a result of changes to the local building code, coupled with developers’ desire to improve building aesthetics and provide much needed walk in retail space for high-end structures. Historically, underground construction was uncommon in South Florida due to the high groundwater level and porous soil/rock. Conventional dewatering methods become ineffective only a short depth below the ground surface and deeper excavations have required a tremie seal solution consisting of wet excavation and the pouring a temporary unreinforced slab under a water head. However, as excavation area and depth increase, the cost and schedule of the tremie seal method become problematic. For these reasons developers and construction teams alike have looked to contractors in South Florida for alternative means of construction.This paper details the construction of two sites in South Florida where Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) technology offered an efficient alternative to tremie seal construction. The Brickell City Centre required excavation of 8 acres to depths of 30 feet, and augercast piles up to 36” diameter and 110 feet in depth. The second site, Jade Signature, required an excavation of up to 41 feet directly adjacent to the Atlantic beachfront. Due to the concerns over differential settlement, the project featured a soil mixed gravity wall that was designed and installed to allow for completion of the tower prior to excavating the adjacent garage.Both projects involved improving every square inch of ground beneath the planned project excavation. The developed DSM seal slab solution creates a nearly impervious excavation at excavation invert with the strength to resist hydrostatic uplift forces. Low permeability site perimeter walls are constructed to complete the sealed excavation and reinforced with either beams or sheet piles for structural support. Augercast piles required for the permanent hydrostatic concrete slab supplement the uplift capacity of the DSM. After DSM and augercast piles are installed from grade, the site is excavated in dry conditions."

Major bridges crossing mighty rivers must be constructed in flowing water. Constructing the sub-structure in water has been a challenging job for contractor. Special construction techniques with marine fleets to be adopted for waterfront construction. Enabling works like temporary piling platform and cofferdam used for pile and pile cap construction. Apart from this, enabling works like load out jetty to transport the materials from land to water; temporary walkway for access of workman to work location; temporary access bridge for construction vehicles movement; temporary liners for tower crane foundation; Concrete block to act as dead man anchor for barge movements were all required by the contractor for smooth functioning of site as per construction schedule. Investment in enabling works by contractor plays a significant role on profit margin of the project and of course with utmost safety. Design of enabling works for waterfront structures involves hydrological data like afflux, bathymetry survey, current force, scour depth and wave force to be taken cautiously for safe and economic design. Type of foundation and pile/well cap top level corresponding to water levels shall influence the construction scheme. Usage of geotechnical software like Wallap and Plaxis required for enabling work design to enhance the safety of the structure. Bathymetry and soil condition play a critical role in design and construction of enabling works. Water Discharge quantity in river along with water levels like low water level, high flood level, seasonal fluctuation of water levels has a great impact on design of enabling works. Establishing enabling works for waterfront construction near to an existing bridge is an additional challenge for the contractor. Along with design, constructing the enabling works in water requires special construction methodology and sequence of work. This paper shall provide insights on overview of design and construction of enabling works for waterfront construction.

"This paper will describe dynamic pile testing conducted during installation of driven octagonal precast prestressed concrete piles used as the foundation for this bridge. The piles were long and hence spliced. A number of the piles showed damage near the splices and the damage location was near the ground surface so that the damage could be verified using visual inspection. The piles and splice configuration are still in use today without modification. Further WEAP driveability analysis has been conducted which demonstrates the effect of the splice on pile stresses and a likely failure mode. A slight modification is proposed to the splice that should prevent the damage on future projects.INTRODUCTIONThe bridge site is located on the Olympic Way, Route 41, about 20km north of the regional centre of Albury, NSW. For a long distance north of the site the Olympic Way ""shadows"" the main Melbourne to Sydney rail line and is located on the Western side and in close proximity. At the bridge site there was previously a sharp dog-leg in the road and a right angle level crossing with the road changing to the Eastern side of the rail line, eventually joining up with the Hume Highway, which in turn now becomes a ring-road through the eastern outskirts of Albury. The dog-leg and rail crossing had warning signs and bells, speed restrictions and rumble strips to warn approaching motorists to reduce speed. Site distance was exceptionally good.Approximately 2years before construction a group of five ""high spirited"" young men from the local area were driving south on the Olympic Way adjacent to a south-bound train. It is understood they interacted with the train crew for a period of time. Unfortunately the car and train collided at the level crossing and all of the young men were killed. There were outpourings of grief in the local community and a decision was made to replace the level crossing with a road-over-rail bridge.The bridge was highly skewed with two piers and two high level abutments with fill embankments on both approaches.GROUND CONDITIONSThe site is open grazing country with approximately level ground at the site with surrounding low hills. The geology was unremarkable with consistent stiff clays for a considerable depth.The design required driven precast prestressed pile foundations with the piles to be driven to a considerable depth.Hard driving with high tension stresses were evident from the start of driving and a variety of different pre-bore lengths were adopted in an attempt to minimise driving and potential for damage. At the abutments the pile locations were predrilled for at least the full embankment depth.PILESThe piles were 550mm octagonal prestressed concrete with the pier piles being single piece and the longer abutment piles being two-piece with a ""standard"" epoxy glued box splice. Pier piles and the initial length of the abutment piles were 24m. The add-on piece used at the abutments was 12m. Pile concrete was grade 50MPa."

In 1967 the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey undertook the construction of the World Trade Center (WTC) diaphragm walls, installation of the lateral support system and the excavation of the site, commonly referred to as the "Bathtub". The work took two years to complete. In 2001 the City of New York undertook the re-excavation of the site after the terrorist attacks. The recovery work will take eight months to complete. This paper describes the initial work on the WTC "bathtub" in the late 1960s and the recent work during the recovery.

With the rapid expansion of urban transportation systems, tunnels and cut & cover structures are considered as the only solution in improving the urban space congestion problem in mass rapid transit system. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately design underground structures with realistic assumptions and considerations of design parameters like site geotechnical data, water table, surcharge load etc. Over conservative approach provides not only uneconomical design but sometimes it also causes overdesign of the concerned structures. Water table depth has a significant role in some design aspects of underground structures like floatation check, lateral and uplift pressure on the buried structure, etc. In current practice of tunnel and cut & cover structure design, water table is assumed to coincide with the ground level. Most of the Design Basis Reports & Outline Design Specifications directly mention consideration of water table at ground level for floatation check and load calculations, etc. However, the actual scenario is different in most of the cities specially in northern, central, western and eastern regions of India except the coastal cities. In the present study an attempt has been made to carry out a parametric study on the effect of water table depth in the design of a typical 6.3m outer diameter circular tunnel with 6m backfill. In this study, it is also attempted to establish an analytical method of calculating the most realistic consideration of water table depth instead of the present hypothetical assumption of considering water table to coincide with the ground level. The findings of the current study may be helpful to the researchers and practising engineers in design of tunnel and cut & cover structure for subways and metros.

The ongoing urban development is a global phenomenon, placing has high demands on urban infrastructure (housing, public services, transportation, telecommunications, etc.). Micropiling is one of the most successfully implemented deep foundation technologies in urban interventions, and in densely populated and built-up areas. The use of micropiles enabled the implementation of several solutions within short time frames, with minimal disturbance to the daily activities of the population. Since urban interventions usually represent a very important investment and have an economic impact, special attention should be paid to the serviceability of the urban infrastructure in the middle and long term. For the foundations, the design loadbearing capacity of the used structural elements needs to be guaranteed during the planned life time of the structures. In the case of micropiles, it must be ensured that the steel load bearing elements are effectively protected against corrosion. This paper presents the structural design of permanent self-drilling micropiles, subject to tension due to uplift loads. For the case study, different micropile systems - available worldwide - will also be evaluated. For the afore mentioned micropile systems, the design considerations regarding the durability of the reinforcement, based on their corrosion protection approaches, will be presented in this paper.

"Excessive deformation of a cantilever sheetpile wall can occur due to dredging, excavation, backfilling, or long-term creep behavior of soil. A buttressing berm constructed in front of the wall can be considered as a mitigation technique to prevent or decrease the deformation by increasing the passive earth pressure and thus improving the wall stability. The effect of the buttressing berm on the stability and deformation of a sheetpile depends on the berm geometry (i.e., the thickness/depth and the width) as well as the properties of the sheetpile and the adjacent soils. A parametric study was conducted using a conventional limit equilibrium method. Design charts were prepared to evaluate the effect of a buttressing berm and the soil friction angle on the wall stability and deformation. These charts can be used as a tool by geotechnical engineers to make a quick estimate of the required size of a buttressing berm in case of calculated or unexpected excessive deformation of a sheetpile. An analysis of the effect of a buttressing berm on the stresses and deformation of a sheetpile was also compared with the results from finite element analysis. The results of this comparison are discussed.INTRODUCTIONCantilever sheetpile walls are commonly used to support excavations. Sheetpiles are hot rolled or cold formed sections of steel made to interlock with adjacent sections to form a continuous structure providing lateral support. Sheetpile walls can be cantilever walls or anchored with tiebacks. To construct a cantilever sheetpile wall, sheetpiles are driven by pile drivers or vibrated in to a design depth sufficiently below the depth of excavation. Excavation can then proceed in front of the sheetpile wall, which resists the earth pressure loading from behind the wall. The design depth and geometry of the sheetpile wall depend on the soil conditions, the depth of excavation, and the tolerable deformation. In certain cases, when a small buttress of soil can be left immediately adjacent to the sheetpile wall, the required depth or geometry of the sheetpile wall can be reduced or adjusted, which can significantly decrease the cost of procuring and installing the wall. Such a buttress can also serve as a short-term or long-term remedy in case of observed excessive deformation in a constructed wall. Traditional methods of analyzing the stability of a sheetpile wall do not account for the passive pressure effects of this small buttress. In this paper, a parametric study was performed for a variety of soil types and wall and buttress geometries by implementing traditional limit equilibrium methods in commercial software and design charts were created illustrating the effect of a buttressing berm on sheetpile deflection. Selected cases were then modeled in a finite element software to compare the results with the traditional limit equilibrium method. The resulting design charts can be used as a tool by geotechnical engineers looking to reduce the design geometry of a sheetpile wall or address observed excessive deformation in a constructed sheetpile wall."

A Real Time Automated Remote Reading Electrolytic Tilt Monitoring System was effectively deployed for monitoring an existing five story brick building during underpinning, shoring and excavation operations for a directly adjacent thirty-foot deep excavation. The monitoring system was comprised of four sets of uniaxial electrolytic tilt meters connected to a Campbell datalogger with multiplexer, cellular modem and solar power. The excavation was for the foundation and underground parking as part of a new 55 story tower complex. Challenges to the contractors and to our monitoring personnel which were addressed included a tight urban site contemplating property line to property line new construction with directly adjacent old existing buildings, buried concrete foundations from former site use, cohesionless pervious sandy soils and high groundwater. Highly variable and diurnal ambient temperature regimes due to adjacent building shadows required careful corroboration and application of temperature corrections to the raw data. Earth tides were suspected on a very small scale and investigated by correlation between the data and the local sinusoidal tidal ephemera. Incidental inadvertent contractor interference with the instruments during underpinning due to site constraints was readily detected.

Interactive Web Platforms are already being used for group collaboration on a global scale. As these can be used without programming knowledge and are user-friendly, Web Platforms make cooperation more efficient and stimulate members to actively participate. Another application of growing interest are Internet Platforms and electronic publishing, which can provide technical and other information in different formats and much cheaper than conventional books or proceedings.

"Noise from impact pile driving can harm fish, marine mammals and other sensitive wildlife over large areas. Marine pile driving is highly regulated, and regulators require sound levels to be below certain thresholds to avoid harassment and injury to sensitive marine life. In many locations, timing restrictions, use of noise attenuation technologies and extensive monitoring for impacts to wildlife are also required. As a result, permitting can be laborious and time consuming, and project implementation and scheduling can be complicated. Underwater noise levels are measured with an underwater microphone (hydrophone), which converts noise pressure to voltage and is calibrated to express the noise pressure in Pascals (Pa). The pressure is often expressed using a logarithmic scale, in decibels (dB). Several specific metrics can be used to describe underwater noise. Three common metrics are the instantaneous peak sound pressure level (dBpeak), the root mean square pressure level (dBRMS) and the sound exposure level (dBSEL) referred to as the peak, RMS and SEL levels, respectively.During impact pile driving, the peak pressure represents the instantaneous maximum pressure, either overpressure or underpressure, observed during each pile strike. The RMS level is the square root of the mean of the square of the pressure during the duration of the impulse; it is the average pressure level of the pile strike from beginning to end. The cumulative SEL (SELcum) is calculated by summing the cumulative pressure squared and integrating over time of duration of the pile strike. SEL is used as an indication of the cumulative energy of a pile driving event, which may consist of one or many pile strikes.Regulatory agencies use these metrics to help characterize the noise pressure levels that can affect sensitive species. Some of the most frequently encountered biological thresholds in the Northwestern United States that are used by regulators to describe potential impacts to sensitive species are summarized in the following table. Agencies have defined thresholds for different types of injury, either hearing or bodily harm, and for temporary injury or disturbance."

"The Commonwealth of Virginia is restoring and expanding its Capitol of great historic significance. Designed by Thomas Jefferson in 1785, it is the second oldest Capitol building in the United States. The building expansion required excavations immediately adjacent to its South Portico. The building, which rests on shallow brick footings, is very sensitive to any disturbance caused by construction and excavation. A comprehensive and secure plan of operations was devised by the design team to ensure that this national monument remains unharmed by the new construction. Various construction techniques were implemented to satisfy the strict movement goal of 0.25 inch and distortion of U2000. They consisted of jet grout columns to stabilize the upper soils, compensation grouting for future foundation leveling, a tied-back reinforced concrete diaphragm wall for excavation retention and foundations, and realtime instrumentation for monitoring. This paper describes the design approach for the retention system, providing information on the various construction phases and techn iques, and reports on the movements recorded by the real-time monitoring system during the course of the project. At the time of this manuscript preparation, and the deep excavation complete to final grade, the results indicate that the extremely restrictive building movement criteria have been met. The success can be credited to detailed design, close cooperation among the project team, prudent construction methods, and real-time monitoring. INTRODUCTIONThe Commonwealth of Virginia is undertaking a comprehensive renovation and expansion of the Virginia Capitol building located in Richmond, Virginia. The Capitol building was designed by Thomas Jefferson in 1785, with construction of the original building starting the same year. The Capitol building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.A part of the comprehensive renovation and expansion of the Capitol is a 25,000-square foot, two-level subterranean extension on the south side of the Capitol building, which will serve as a new Visitor Center and public entrance for the Capitol. Deep excavations were required for the construction of the new Visitor Center. The excavation required a permanent retention system to accommodate an approximately 40- foot deep excavation."

Croton Point Avenue Bridge carries Croton Avenue over Metro-North main tracks at Harmon Rail Yard in Westchester County, New York. The new bridge is 1100 foot long and 36 foot wide nine span structure with three spans continuous units. The spans are steel multi-stringers, composite with concrete deck. The piers are solid wall piers and the foundations are spread footings. During the design of the bridge foundations it was determined that the relatively loose to medium dense sand layer is susceptible to liquefaction under a design earthquake with a seismic coefficient of 0.15g. Several foundation options were considered for the new bridge including both shallow and deep foundations. It was determined that the most cost effective alternative is to use spread footing foundations supported on densified soils. Vibratory probes were utilized to densify the loose to medium dense sand layer and reduce the risk of liquefaction. Densification test sections were performed to determine the optimum spacing for the vibro probes. The test sections included performing piezocone tests before and after the densification to compare the increase in relative density of the sand. In addition, ground surface settlement due to the vibro probes was measured and correlated to the increase of soil relative density. The paper will present the results of the ground improvement method utilized and correlate the spacing of the vibro probes and the increase in relative density and the results of the piezocone tests performed before and after the densification. It was found that the vibro probes are not as effective as thought at shallow depth below the ground surface. It is believed that the results and finding presented in this paper will benefit both the design and construction industries by providing a relatively cost effective means to improve the soils
