In early 2021, DFI formed a Foundation Reuse Task Force due to concurrent and coincidental discussions of this topic during meetings of the Subsurface Char- acterization for Deep Foundations and Testing and Evaluation committees. Interested members from both commit- tees, as well as of the Sustainability Com- mittee, joined forces to form the task force. The task force mission is to promote foundation reuse by leveraging experi- ence among DFI members and collabo- rating across pertinent committees. General goals of the task force are to identify, assess and reduce risks associated with reuse; to educate owners and decision-makers about reuse; and to improve the investigation, design, construction and testing practices associated with reuse. One of the first orders of business for the task force was to organize a roundtable discussion of foundation reuse for DFI's 46th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations in Las Vegas. Last fall's discussion was framed as a continuation of the successful "Horses for Courses" session of SuperPile '21, which also focused on foundation reuse. However, whereas the SuperPile session focused on technical content, the annual conference panel on October 13, 2021, was envisioned as a less technical conversation that emphasized audience participation while addressing approaches to decisions about foundation reuse issues. "In November 2004, the residents of the City of Nanaimo, B.C., Canada voted to approve a new conference centre as the centrepiece of a proposed revitalization project for the city’s historic downtown core. The proposal goal was to replace a cluster of derelict buildings with a dynamic and modern complex that would connect existing city facilities to a new conference facility, the Vancouver Island Conference Centre (VICC). The conference centre is expected to create 150 full-time jobs, attract visitors/ delegates from across North America and generate new economic opportunities for local businesses.However, the proposed site posed a number of geotechnical and geoenvironmental challenges. As is often the case with coastal cities, historic growth of the Nanaimo downtown and harbour area was achieved through reclamation of former waterfront areas and inlets. These areas were often infilled with random fills and even wastes, leaving a legacy of variable density heterogeneous fills contaminated with a variety of pollutants. Preliminary assessment of the site indicated a high likelihood of a requirement for deep foundations, a high risk of liquefaction in the event of an earthquake and the presence of both soil and groundwater contamination. Construction would be further complicated by the requirement for two levels of basement parking and the proximity of adjacent buildings and major roadways to the work area.With a limited budget (fixed by the referendum) and timeframe, the city needed a cost-effective solution to proceed with construction. A number of options were considered, but an innovative design using leading-edge Cutter Soil Mixer (CSM) technology best met the geotechnical and budgetary requirements of the site. The CSM approach also addressed the environmental concerns of contaminated soils and groundwater. Golder Associates Innovative Applications (GAIA) Inc., in association with the designers of their parent company Golder Associates Ltd. (Golder), proposed the CSM technology — at the time the first North American application."

"Augered-cast-in-place (ACIP) pile installation technology has matured extensively since the first auger, pressure grouted pile was patented in 1959. The current technology allows for successful pile installation across a variety of stratigraphies to meet various project load resistance requirements. This paper presents an overview of current ACIP techniques by comparing a number of case histories in a variety of geologic settings from Eastern Pennsylvania, New York City and New Jersey to demonstrate ACIP pile constructability in soft soils as well as the penetration, and resulting significant loads resisted, of ACIP piles in dense soils and intermediate geo-materials. Geologic settings that will be discussed include the Piedmont and Coastal Plain geologic provinces as well as glacial till deposits. Keywords: Deep Foundations, Piles, Augercast, Augered-cast-in-place, Auger pressure grouted, ACIP, APGINTRODUCTIONThe author, along with two colleagues, published an article in Deep Foundations magazine (NeSmith et al, 2013) which described a number of the advances in equipment, techniques, installation monitoring and post-construction testing that have expanded the geologies in which Augered Cast-in-place (ACIP) piles are installed as well as increasing their efficiency in some traditional ACIP pile geologies. The author uses the term efficiency to refer to the load resisted by a pile of a certain diameter and the increased efficiency noted refers to increased allowable loads over those traditionally resisted by piles of certain diameter (or a reduction in pile diameter from that which was traditionally used to support a certain design load). The performance and installation of ACIP piles in a variety of geologies in the Northeastern U.S. are discussed herein.PIEDMONT PHYSIGRAPHIC PROVINCEThe Piedmont physiographic province stretches from Alabama to the east through Georgia and up the east coast, just west of the Coastal Plain to Pennsylvania and New York (Brown, 2002). It generally consists of soils weathered in place from the underlying bedrock, which is typically a combination of granite, schist and gneiss depending on the location within the province. The author’s experience in the Northeastern US has been on sites where alluvial or coastal plain soils overly the residual soils and partially weathered or intact rock of the Piedmont. The example presented here, from a site on Walnut St in Philadelphia PA, is representative of these projects."

"When the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) was founded, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of foundation construction was rudimentary. Nondestructive testing (NDT) was a nascent technology, known to very few people, and very limited in its capabilities and applications. In the four decades since the DFI became a reality, NDT researchers and practitioners have taken advantage of technological advances to improve those existing testing and analysis techniques, and to create new ones that have all contributed to the engineering body of knowledge. This has enabled contractors to improve the quality and reliability of their products, and engineers to design more efficient foundations.Through its regular series of seminars, publications and annual meetings, the DFI has been vitally important in educating the deep foundations industry about the capabilities and benefits of NDT methods. In turn, NDT results have helped the industry identify problems in deep foundation construction, determine the causes of those problems, and improve design constructability and construction practices to increase the quality, reliability and efficiency of all types of deep foundations. This presentation reviews the evolution of several important NDT methods, and the contributions that they have made to foundation quality.THE BEGINNINGSThe Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) was incorporated in 1976 in the State of New Jersey as a 501(c)(6) non-profit association. The DFI is a consensus organization of Contractors, Engineers, Owners and Suppliers involved with the design and construction of all types of deep foundations. The purpose of the DFI was and still is to improve the planning, design and construction of deep foundations by educating all those involved, sharing best practices, and promoting the adoption of new technologies that improve quality, productivity or safety.This is well expressed in the current DFI Mission Statement: To bring together multi-disciplined individuals and organizations to find common ground and create a shared vision and a consensus voice for continual advancement in the deep foundations industry.At the time the DFI was born, nondestructive testing for verifying the quality and integrity of deep foundations was in its infancy, its growth constrained by the technology, or lack thereof. Some visionary engineers of the time understood the physics of the potential methods, and therefore the possible capabilities, but were frustrated by the lack of technology to work with. Electronic equipment was mostly analog, and the few digital data acquisition systems that were available had such slow sampling rates that they were incapable of recording rapid event sequences or short duration events such as those used in modern integrity tests. For example, Jean Paquet, a leading research engineer at the French National Construction Institute, (Centre Experimentale de Recherche et d’Etudes du Batiment et des Travaux Publics, or CEBTP) patented the frequency-based analysis procedure for the Transient Dynamic Response (TDR) method, aka Sonic Mobility or Impulse Response, in 1974, but it was not until 1977 that analog data acquisition systems became fast enough to turn his theory into a reality."

"As governments increasingly accord high priority to sustainable energy, policymakers are finding that wind energy has a long track record as a proven alternative to conventional energy supply.Over the past two decades, wind turbine projects have been constructed offshore because of more stable offshore wind conditions and because there is more available space for large wind farms out in the open sea. Vindeby Wind Farm in southern Denmark was constructed in 1991. As the world’s first offshore wind farm, it provided valuable information and experience for researchers and designers that have led to new technologies and design improvements, a trend that will continue as more offshore wind farms are constructed. Today, the world’s capacity of the installed offshore wind turbines exceeds 1,000 MW. Most of these are installed in Northern Europe where there was early political support and favorable conditions, such as strong winds and relatively shallow waters. Offshore wind projects are now under development around the globe, including continental Europe, the U.K. and North America. ‘The largest offshore wind farm today is Denmark’s Nysted Offshore Wind Farm, which has a total capacity of approximately 480,000 MWh, equivalent to the yearly consumption of 120,000 households. It is five to six miles offshore in the Baltic Sea in the southern part of Denmark.The owner is a joint venture between DONG Energy of Denmark and E.ON Sweden. Bonus Energy (now Siemens) supplied the wind turbines, and P. Aarsleff A/S and subcontractors supplied the foundations. The contractor’s consultant, COWI A/S of Denmark, developed and designed the turbine foundations. With a total capacity of 165.6 MW, the project consists of 72 Bonus 2.3 MW turbines in water depths up to 33 ft. The turbines have a hub height of 226 ft, and the turbine blade diameter is 270 ft. The rotor and nacelle (the structure that houses the generator, gearbox and other equipment) weigh approximately 150 tons, and the weight of the steel tower is approximately 130 tons. The wind farm site is located in a relatively protected area of the Baltic Sea, but during the winter months, the water often freezes and the foundations needed to be constructed to resist ice forces. The founding soils at the site are overconsolidated clay tills with boulders and with a thin layer of softer surface sediments. Pockets of up to 30 ft of soft sediments were encountered, which required special foundation preparations."

The Waikato Expressway is one of the New Zealand Transport Agency’s (NZTA) seven roads of National Significance. Coffey is part of the City Edge Alliance engaged by NZTA for the Hamilton Section of the project. The 22km Hamilton Section is the largest and most geotechnically complex section of the Expressway. The Mangaonua gully in Sector 6 is the most challenging geotechnical area of the project for piling works. Together Coffey and Brian Perry Civil have carried out the temporary and permanent design and construction of embankments, piling works, retaining walls and soil improvement works for the bridge construction. The design and construction works were governed by weak alluvial layers and artesian pressure layers several meters beneath the ground level. This paper presents the action taken to improve the foundation of temporary platform, control the artesian pressure, prevent bentonite leakages into the highly permeable alluvial layer and challenges in the base grouting process. This paper summarises the key components in the construction and supervision of bored piling works and outlines innovative solutions for challenges which we faced during the construction.

Design and construction of deep foundations and basements is increasingly becoming more complex, as the density and frequency of urban development increases. This growth brings various associated challenges in the form of design considerations and construction challenges. This paper discusses some of the challenges routinely encountered as well as some specific complications in this area, based on author’s experience gained through exposure as specialist contractor (designer), consultant and specialist consultant, along with some information on how these challenges were overcome. The paper highlights some of the key aspects of design coordination and importance of having an awareness of the overall perspective. Examples will be used to illustrate practical problems and the approaches used to respond.

The first documented procedures for designing frozen earth structures are over 50 years old, implemented long before the introduction of the Finite Element Method (FEM). Since that time, the development of three-dimensional models has made the traditional and often over-conservative methods relatively obsolete. This paper discusses a new approach that is largely dependent on the analysis of internal stresses with the frozen structure and comparison to frozen soil laboratory tests. A specific design process is discussed related to initial field investigation, laboratory testing, structural and thermal analysis, and performance monitoring. The design results are compared to case histories in the field that verify the procedure. BACKGROUND One of the first documented methods to designing frozen earth retaining structures was by Sangar (1968). Methodical refinements were published by (Harris 1995) and published by the International Symposium on Ground Freezing in 2002 (Andersland et al. 1991). The structural design or thickness of the frozen mass was based on the unconfined compressive strength of the frozen soils. Two simple equations for determining the thickness of a frozen shaft are shown in Fig. 1 and the first two equations below.

Echo Dam, located near Coalville, Utah, is a facility that provides storage for irrigation and municipal use. Original construction of the dam was completed in 1931. Because of seismic concerns, the spillway crest structure and upper chute section, founded on old landslide and colluvial material, were recently replaced. Prior to replacement of these structures, jet grouting of a block of the loose and potentially liquefiable soils, directly beneath the spillway crest structure was selected as the preferred alternative to address the potential for settlement and cracking of the spillway crest structure. The replacement or alteration of the in-place soil reduces the likelihood of seismic-induced excess pore pressure development and subsequent settlements. Core drilling and sample recovery of the production jet grouted columns was completed to verify compliance with the specifications. It was recognized that due to the larger rock sizes within the deposits that full homogeneity of the jet grouted zone was unlikely to be achievable. However, the purpose of this jet grouted section was to strengthen enough of the soil so that widespread liquefaction does not occur. During the jet grouting production many instances of ground fracturing occurred. Fracturing was evident based on grout/air bubbles exiting the surface near some of the grout holes during jet grouting, air bubbles appearing in the spoil pits, and lifting of the ground surface in the vicinity of the monitor during the jet grouting process while the system was pressurized. In one instance, a section of the upstream spillway slab, which was left in place, was cracked due to pressurized grout escaping beneath the slab. The overall results of the jet grouting were satisfactory despite difficulties encountered. The cause of the fracturing is hypothesized and a recommendation is included to reduce the likelihood of this occurring on future jobs.

"Construction for the restoration and expansion of 102-year-old Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois began at the conclusion of the 2014 baseball season. This six year project involves structural upgrades to the Stadium, improvements to the facade, infrastructure, restrooms, concourses, suites, press box, and bullpens, as well as the addition of restaurants, patio areas, batting tunnels, video boards, an adjacent Office-retail Tower and a new Hotel. The Bleachers were demolished and replaced, and a new underground Clubhouse was constructed for the Chicago Cubs beneath a new open-air Plaza. The 1060 Project is privately funded, projected at $750 million (US). The work will be completed in phases during consecutive off-seasons, each with a maximum 23-week duration extending through the Chicago winter. Ownership mandated that on-going construction cause no disruption to the Major League Baseball season, have no impact on hosting concerts and other special events, and it should not adversely affect seating capacity, or diminish the fan experience.The 1060 ProjectAfter purchasing the Chicago Cubs baseball team in 2009 from the Tribune Company, the Ricketts family began planning the renovation and improvement of Wrigley Field and its near neighborhood surroundings in Chicago, Illinois. What came to be known as the 1060 Project was officially announced at the annual Cubs Convention in 2013. Construction began on the $750M privately funded project in October 2014 at the conclusion of the Major League Baseball season. In their vision, the Ricketts committed the 1060 Project to three primary goals. First and foremost as a MLB franchise, the work should provide a meaningful contribution toward winning the World Series and ending the championship drought which stretched to the last win in 1908. Second, the project should be focused on preserving and improving Wrigley Field. Finally, the project should be committed to outcomes that enable the team to be a good neighbor and provide economic and social benefit to the local community.Constructed as Weeghman Park in 1914 for an estimated total cost of $250,000, the stadium provided seating for 18,000 fans and a home for the Chi-Feds and Whales of the National Federal League. The Chicago Cubs were enticed to move from the West Side Grounds in 1915. In the next 100 years, the Wrigley Field would be sliced apart and expanded, double its seating capacity with the addition of double deck grandstands, be enclosed by bleachers (and an ivy covered wall), and, in 1988, experience its first nighttime baseball game with the addition of lighting.The 1060 Project has a total budget of $750M, with an expected construction value of $350M. It is projected to add over 2,100 jobs to the economy and be completed before the 2020 baseball season. The work will be completed in phases during consecutive off-seasons, each with a maximum 23-week duration extending through the Chicago winter. "The Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Causeway Project in Kuwait is estimated at approximately $US3.7 billion and consists of constructing a causeway across the Kuwait Bay, connecting the Shuwaikh Port with the northern Subiyah area, where the new “Silk City” will be established. The $US77 billion Silk City will revive the ancient “Silk Road” trade route and will become a major free trade zone linking central Asia with Europe. The new city will be completed in 2030, it will house about 700,000 people and, furthermore, it will include the tallest tower in the world. The Causeway will stretch approximately 23.3 miles and will be composed of a combination of low-level bridges, embankments and transition islands. A bridge of about 16.8 miles in length will span the navigation channel and a free flow interchange at the Shuwaikh Port will connect the causeway to the main road network in Kuwait City. The geo-construction portion of the project involves the execution of 1,200 drilled shafts with diameters of 98 inches and 118 inches embedded to a maximum depth of about 276 feet. Details are provided concerning the subsurface conditions, the geotechnical characteristics and the strength parameters, illustrating, as well, the installation technique implemented for the construction of the drilled shafts. In addition, particular attention is paid to the description of the challenges faced while constructing the drilled shafts at a distance of about 10 miles from the shore, such as the depth of the water above the midline (more than 160 feet), an underwater current and the tidal variation.INTRODUCTIONThis paper presents an overview of the foundation works executed for a 37km causeway across the Bay of Kuwait, connecting Shuwaikh Port with Subiyah New Town Development. The project, in which Trevi is actively engaged, includes a 27 km low-level bridge across the bay, a main bridge with a span of 200 m, an overpass and a 5 km approach road onshore in Subiyah.The main purpose of this report is to provide information about the nature and features of the applied technique of bored piles, including a description of each work phase and other related details, in order to aid in the design of the foundations for the proposed construction.Works for the soil investigation were carried out in accordance with accepted geotechnical standards/guidelines. Brief descriptions of the methodology of the field are also provided in this report."

"A world famous Wintersport resort in the Alpine planned to build a parking garage for more than 600 cars and busses situated between a torrent, a district road and the village.A nearly 200 m long building giving place for 6 parking levels and a maintenance level for busses and trucks is situated alongside a hill causing excavation height between 20 and 25 meters, which had to be secured. Due to restrictions – neighbours did not allow the client to drill anchors for retention – we designed a solution combining micropiles, strand anchors, shotcrete and nails as permanent earth retention not exceeding the space of 7 meters provided by the local street. Soil conditions were as challenging - reaching from backfill to moraine with boulders of more than 20 m³ volume – as the construction period of total 12 months for the whole project, which was opened mid of November 2015.The innovative solution outperformed the client´s project from the technical and commercial aspect and helped the contractor to save time and money.The design process with its difficulties as well as erection process is described in the following paper."

Soil nails are often utilized as a temporary or permanent earth retention technique for slope stabilization and for excavation retention for existing or new structures. Soils nails are generally advantageous as installation is relatively rapid and they can be installed beneath existing structures and where site access for equipment is limited. Due to the typically small cross-section of these elements, the inability to inspect the holes prior to grouting/concreting, and the various installation techniques utilized, quality control for assessing the integrity along the entire length is limited. Currently, quality assurance is conducted by load testing to verify the pull out capacity after installation. The load testing is typically done on a small percentage of the total number of soil nails. This paper will provide the results of a demonstration where the new Non-Destructive Test (NDT) method Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) was used to access the integrity of several soil nails along their entire lengths. This TIP method has been successfully used for several years to assess the integrity in drilled shafts and ACIP piles. The TIP method assesses the integrity across the entire cross-section and can identify regions where bulges, necks, and insufficient grout/concrete are present. TIP testing can also help assure that the contractor's installation methods are adequate and consistent for the intended design. For the project presented, instrumented Thermal Wire were affixed to the centered tension bars prior to placement in the excavated shafts. Temperature measurements were recorded from the hydration energy generated after grout/concrete placement, capturing the entire heating cycle. Manufactured defects were installed on the center bar at multiple locations. The results and conclusion will be discussed as well as recommendations for future use.

"After Hurricane Sandy, the stability of an earth slope in the Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey in the United States was deteriorating due to slumping soils and erosion from flooding. A slope stability evaluation indicated the slope did not satisfy the requirements of the local building code. A triple-tier, pile-supported and mechanically stabilized earth wall was designed and constructed to stabilize the slope. The construction was planned from a 3-m-wide roadway and, because of rough terrain and limited work space at the site, a cast-in-place drilled-pile construction was deemed impractical due to slow pile production. An alternative procedure was utilized by pre-drilling holes, and installing precast tip-and-shaft-grouted (PCTSG) piles, which extended to competent soils to improve slope stability. A grade beam, connecting the PCTSG piles along with soldier beams and concrete lagging were used to form the lowest tier of the slope stabilization, while the middle and higher tiers were built as mechanically stabilized earth. The stability of the proposed stabilization was analyzed using 2-D non-linear finite elements. After construction, monitoring of the wall continued for about 8 months to check its performance, and indicated lateral and vertical wall movements were less than 25 mm and 6 mm, respectively, indicating effective slope stabilization.INTRODUCTIONStabilizing earth slopes using piles to connect near-surface unstable soils to underlying stable ground masses has been investigated by many researchers, who presented various approaches to evaluate the contribution of the pile system towards improving the stability of the slope. Some of these approaches consider the piles as structural elements receiving forces from the upper sliding ground mass and transmitting these forces to the underlying stable one. The force from the top sliding mass is applied at between one third and one half of the pile embedment into the top sliding mass, Anagnostopoulos et al. (1990), Fukuoka (1977) and Matsui et al. (1988). The point of application of the sliding force was explored based on successful case histories while addressing the safety factors for both geotechnical and structural design, Vessely A. et al. (2007). The development of numerical analysis techniques utilizing the method of finite elements (FE) also enabled better analysis and design of slopes stabilized using piles. A FE-based approach was successfully utilized to design slope stabilization with target safety factor based on the shear and bending demands and the spacing of the piles, Pradel D. et al. (2010).After Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, the stability of many properties constructed atop earth slopes located along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean has become a concern due to storm-induced erosion. This paper presents the analysis, design and construction of a hybrid slope stabilization system utilized at one of these storm-impacted properties, which is located in the Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey in the United States. The subject property consisted of a two-story residential dwelling and a parking structure, and was built on top of an about 8-m-high earth slope having crest at about elevation 10 m (el 10) and toe at about el 2."

The Aeolus – Jim Bridger Transmission Line Project is located in southern Wyoming, home to some of the largest coal seams in the world. Coal seams present unique challenges to underground construction, as they are at high risk of coal-seam fires and do not provide a reliable bearing stratum. Accurate identification of these hazards was essential for reliable design and successful construction of foundations on this project; however, environmental restrictions and other protections created short time frames to access several sites. Coupled with a firm construction deadline, this meant that a comprehensive geotechnical investigation prior to construction would not be possible. This paper presents the project as a case study, and details how an Engineer-Procure-Construct (EPC) contracting format supported by a comprehensive Quality Assurance (QA) program provided a solution to the defined challenges. It describes the initial design process using incomplete geotechnical data and explains how the developed QA program verified design assumptions and reduced geotechnical risk through early identification of geologic conditions during construction. Specific examples will be given, and industry implications will be discussed.

Most modern buildings involve the construction of a basement, often of several levels, to maximize the floor area ratio. The basement walls are generally designed for excavation retention purposes only, and are infrequently considered as elements which can help to support the structural loads from the superstructure. However, the basement walls can provide substantial stiffness and resistance to structural loads, and may contribute to the overall foundation capacity and stiffness. This paper presents a simplified approach to approximate the overall foundation capacity and stiffness considering the various components of the foundation system, including the foundation piles, the basement floor slab, the basement walls and interaction between each foundation component. The effect of the basement walls in enhancing the foundation stiffness values is examined by reference to the results of finite element analyses which consider a foundation subjected to vertical, horizontal and moment loadings. The approximate approach is found to give results that are adequate for a preliminary assessment of the effects of basement walls on the overall foundation response, without the need for detailed three-dimensional finite element analyses.

"The stadium development consists of construction of a 68,500-seat, open-air NFL football stadium for the San Francisco 49ers. The main structure will consist of a 7-story above grade steel structure supported by over 3,000 piles. Berkel and Company Contractors, Inc. (Berkel) was selected as the design-build pile contractor who used their auger pressure grouted displacement (APGD) piles for this project. During an indicator pile installation and pile load test program, fifteen piles were tested to develop installation criteria to support demands of 150kips tension and 180 kips compression. Following the indicator pile program Berkel installed 3088 piles in 30 working days. Throughout pile installation data were collected with an automated data acquisition system (DAS). During pile installation field engineers from Treadwell & Rollo observed the pile installation as well as the real-time data from the DAS. Strategic staging and pre-production planning by Berkel along with consistent collaboration with the design team created an atmosphere for a successful and on schedule project completion.IntroductionThe new San Francisco 49ers Stadium in Santa Clara, California will be a 68,500-seat facility, a rendering of which is shown in Figure 1. The north, east and south portions of the stadium are designed as an open seating bowl, while the western portion includes open seating at the lower levels and seven-story tower which houses over 150 suites.The stadium project includes the stadium structure, as well as elevated open pedestrian walkways, commercial community space, and three new pedestrian bridges spanning a nearby by creek. Sustainable designs and innovations such as a green roof, photovoltaic panels, a ground source geothermal system, stadium-wide Wi-Fi capability, and access to public transit are provided throughout the project. The stadium is designed as an open, light, and airy structure and is surrounded by an existing amusement park, office buildings, the Santa Clara Convention Center, and the training facility of the 49ers."

This paper describes an investigation into the bleeding behaviour of bentonite slurry observed on a trial diaphragm wall panel. The bleeding is thought to be due to the bentonite experiencing a chemical reaction leading to settlement of the solids within the fluid, possibly as a self-weight consolidation process. The trial panel was constructed in a busy airport environment where many different chemical products are used for de-icing the aeroplanes, runways, apron areas, vehicle access and pedestrian routes. The relationships between slurry contamination, bleeding, bentonite hydration time and filter loss behaviour were examined as no relevant published literature could be found. The results show that the amount of bleed strongly depends on both the degree of contamination and the hydration time. It is concluded that bentonite fluids should be allowed to sit in the storage tank for at least 24 hours after mixing, and that the filter loss test is a quick and effective method to determine the potential for bleeding of contaminated slurries.

There are many types of Earth Retention Systems (ERS) available in the market where more than one method can be a feasible solution for a project. This paper examines the design and construct process of a project in Dee Why, NSW using a hybrid ERS comprising contiguous piles with jet grout infill. The development comprises a deep basement and mixed-use urban superstructure. The site is located in an area of variable ground conditions, high ground water table and in proximity to existing buildings with multi-level basements. This paper details a comprehensive assessment of the geological conditions and strategies adopted to better understand the effectiveness of the proposed product and to minimise the associated risks of the proposed solution. This involved conducting additional geotechnical investigation, extensive numerical modelling and in-situ monitoring of the movements and the performance of the walls. A monitoring regime consisting of inclinometers, survey points on capping beam and prisms on the neighbouring buildings and roads surrounding shoring wall was implemented. The monitoring results were back-analysed using computer software WALLAP, Plaxis–2D and Plaxis–3D for the post-construction examinations. This paper details the effectiveness and advantages of a hybrid ERS using contiguous piles with jet grout infill.

"Sonic drilling is a relatively new technology even though it has been in development since the late 1940s. It was initially funded by the U.S. petroleum industry and then, in the late 40s, Russian scientists worked on developing sonic drilling, their interest based on drilling rates 3 to 20 times that of conventional methods. In the early 1960s, the Shell Oil Company backed research that resulted in a down-hole device with a series of eccentric weights driven by drilling fluid to generate vibration. Hawker Sidley, in the early 1980s, developed the first modern prototype sonic drills in Vancouver B.C. and the North Star Drilling Company in Minnesota became the first contractor in the U.S. to operate sonic equipment in 1985. In 1994, North Star became a division of Boart Longyear, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah.What’s Unique about a Sonic DrillA sonic drill rig appears and operates very much like any conventional top-drive rotary rig. The key difference is that a sonic drill has a specially designed hydraulically powered drill head, containing oscillators, that generates adjustable high-frequency vibratory forces. The sonic head is attached directly to the drill pipe or outer casing, sending the high frequency vibrations down through the drill steel to the face of the drill bit. This creates displacement, fracturing or shearing action depending on the material being drilled. The oscillator uses two eccentric, counter-rotating balance weights or rollers that are timed to direct 100% of the vibration at 0 degrees and 180 degrees. An air spring houses the oscillators and separates the vibration from the drill rig itself. The vibratory frequency is controlled to suit operating conditions and to achieve optimum drilling rates.When the vibrations coincide with the natural resonant frequency of the steel drill rod or casing, a natural phenomenon called “resonance” occurs. It allows the rig to transfer timed vibratory energy into the top of the drill string, utilizing the natural stored energy of the steel. This causes the drill string to use inertia and act like a flywheel delivering tremendous amounts of energy directly to the bit face. In friendly overburden formations, a sonic drill rig can achieve penetration rates of one ft per second."
