"Continuous in-plant testing of collectorless Cu/Pb bulk flotation on Lyon Lake ore at Matlabi Mines Ltd. Was conducted using a portable circuit based on 5 L mini flotation cells. It is concluded that collectorless Cu/Pb flotation is a reliable phenomenon for this ore over the usual range of plant operating conditions.IntroductionFlotation of some sulphide minerals without the use of conventional collectors (e.g. xanthates) is now widely recognized. The requirement appears to be some degree of oxidation, although the nature of the surface product formed is still uncertain (Luttrell and Yoon, 1984; Buckley and Walker, 1988). The phenomenon has been termed ""collectorless"" or ""self-induced"" flotation. One of the minerals most responsive to coUectorless flotation is chalcopyrite; in contrast pyrite and sphalerite show little response and galena usually shows intermediate response (Hayes et al., 1987; Shannon and Trahar, 1986).Most of the work on collector1ess l1otation has involved single mineral or batch flotation on ore samples. There are only occasional references to collector1ess l1otation under plant conditions (Sandstrom and Jonsson, 1988; Vargas, 1990; Boyce et al., 1970). Creating and maintaining the appropriate oxidation conditions and differences in water quality are among the reasons why the phenomenon may not transfer readily to the plant (Grano et al., 1990). Periodically from the spring of 1989, Mattabi Mines Ltd. ran full-scale tests of collector1ess bulk CulPb flotation while treating Lyon Lake ore*: the observations confirmed the laboratory finding that chalcopyrite and galena floated without collector (Leroux et al., 1989).To explore this finding continuous in-plant testing using mini flotation cells was conducted which is the subject of this paper. The main objective was to determine if collectorless flotation was a reliable phenomenon over the expected range of redox conditions in the feed pulp to bulk CulPb roughing. As background, the previous work (Leroux et al., 1989; Martin, 1988) is briefly reviewed."

The increasing size and complexity of mega construction projects result in having several geographically distributed stakeholders, collaborating with each other to successfully deliver the project. Electronic Product and Process Management Systems (EPPMS) are recently emerging to facilitate the collaboration between stakeholders, reduce the surprises and issues, and improve the project productivity. These are commercially successful but evolving systems. An important component of EPPMS is the Interface Management System, which aims at formalizing and automating the communication channels between stakeholders. An interface is generally considered the link between construction elements, phases, or stakeholders. An interface Management System (IMS) involves five iterative steps: (1) Interface Identification, (2) Interface Documentation, (3) Interface Transferring, (4) Interface Communication, and (5) Interface Closing. A fundamental part of step 2 is recognizing different roles in dealing with interfaces. Each stakeholder is assigned a different role, such as responsible, accountable, consulted, and informed. In a mega project, several thousands of interfaces exist with complex relationships between stakeholders. Therefore, identifying stakeholders with higher responsible roles has been requested as useful information to the project owner in dealing with some of the project risks. After the interfaces are determined, and the responsibilities are allocated, the critical stakeholders are identified using the centrality concept in Social Network Analysis. The critical stakeholders can be determined at the highest level, considering all types of interfaces, as well as for each specific type or discipline-related interfaces. The proposed methodology is applied on a hypothetical offshore project with over 500 interfaces. In fact, this project is a simplified representation of a real scale Liquid Natural Gas project. In order to reduce the complexity of calculations and clarity of explanations, the simplified case study is used. By implementing IMS in mega projects, different parties not only formalize the communication between each other, but also gain better visibility concerning their roles and responsibilities. In addition, the owner benefits from analysing the complex relationships between stakeholders to further identify critical ones, along with other criteria like package cost, stakeholders? experiences, etc.

Coal mine fires burn about 20?21 million tons of coal per year throughout the world, which not only results in loss of valuable coal reserves, but also cause serious environmental hazards over large areas. The famous Jharia Coalfield of Dhanbad, India is no exception; here a coal mine fire originally reported nearly a century ago is still continuing unabated in vast areas of the coalfield. In this paper, an attempt has been made to analyse high resolution multispectral thermal images of ASTER for mapping and delineating surface and subsurface coal mine fire areas of this coalfield. From the generated temperature gradient map, as well as from the surface temperature anomaly map, it has been possible to differentiate shallow and deep coal mine fire regions and other erroneous cultural features. It is observed that the coal fires are distributed mostly in the eastern part of the area, which has branched into two major coal fire zones: one along Lodna- Tisra-Bhulanbarari-Kujama-Jealgora Jharia and the other along the Kusunda-Kendudih area. The western fire zone is restricted in Dumra-Nadkhurkee-Jayramdih area. From ASTER thermal infrared data from 2006, the total affected area is estimated to be about 7 km2, of which the deep subsurface coal mine fire area is around 3 km2 and the shallow surface coal mine fire area is around 4 km2, as compared to 18 km2 coal mine fire area estimated in 1987 using Landsat TM thermal band data. In other words, the fireaffected region has decreased by about 50 % during the last 18 years. However, such decrease in coal fire area is seen in the central portion only, and has in fact increased in the south eastern parts of the Jharia coalfield. Study of Differential Interferometery images, generated from Earth Resources Satellite (ERS) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tandem data has shown that the active coal mine fires are in general associated with low topography/subsidence areas.

"This paper could be more appropriately titled ""The Application of Vacuum Filters to Underground Minewater Treatment. in a previous paper co-authored by the writer (1) the history and development of minewater treatment at the Sudbury District Operations of the International Nickel Company was outlined. It is the intention of this paper to dwell more specifically WIth the the application of the vacuum filter to a problem found in most, if not all, underground mining operations. In the preparation of this paper the writer has made liberal use of the illustrations and text of the paper previously noted.Last year we heard Mr. Nemeth discuss the basic mechanisms involved in vacuum filtration (2), and today Yr. Cunliff has exposed us to the selection of the filter media (3). I will now briefly review the various vacuum filter designs that generally lend themselves to metallurgical dewatering applications.DRUM FILTERSThe revolving drum-type which filters on its outside periphery is illustrated in Fig. 1. This is the Oliver or Drum filter and represents the first commercially available continuous vacuum filter. The original design dates back more than 50 years, but with the exception of the method of discharge, is identical to the units being marketed today. This filter is generally applied to slow filtering slurries. The cake may be discharged in several ways; strings, scraper blades, rolls or by passing the filter cloth over a small diameter discharge roller (belt discharge).THE DORRCO FILTERThe revolving drum type which filters on its inside periphery is illustrated in Fig. 2. Here the slurry lies in the drum and the cake discharges through a chute or conveyor. This type of filter is most often applied to fast-filtering slurries.THE DISC FILTERThe revolving filter which filters on the vertical plane of the disc is referred to as the Disc or American-type filter. This represents the most inexpensive design in terms of cost per square foot of filter area. This filter is widely applied, but is probably more suitable for slower draining pulps."

Applications of proven real time, through-conveyor elemental analysis technology and benefits achieved will be discussed using case studies in base metals, iron ore and phosphate operations. PGNAA (Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis) technology and its background in minerals applications and applications which are expected to further improve its utilization will be reviewed. Short payback through operational benefits such as removal of waste from feed, increased feed grade and overall improved productivity will be demonstrated based on results achieved at several processing operations. PGNAA technology is most applicable to conveyed flows as it is unaffected by belt speed, particle size, segregation/layering, mineralogy or dust. As a transmission method able to penetrate in excess of 500mm of rock it provides extremely representative results continuously measuring through the full conveyed cross section and reporting results typically on one to five minute accumulated increments to the control room. Multi-elemental results and moisture content are used for active process control: diverting conveyed flow increments(bulk sorting), blending ore types in plant feed, and providing advance warning of significant quality changes to the downstream plant operators (e.g. flotation). Elements of interest may include deleterious components as well as target metals. Ore feed quality measurements are also useful in metal accounting, ore reconciliation and real time feedback to mining operations. Further benefits can result when combined with other technologies such as particle sorters, to upgrade diverted increments of subeconomic material to achieve higher feed grades and lower deleterious content to the main process. Measurement of elements (e.g. silica) which correlate with ore hardness or grinding characteristics can be used to moderate feed rate to grinding mills to prevent overload, hence optimizing grinding performance and reducing energy and grinding media consumption. Pebble flows can be analysed and uneconomic increments diverted to prevent recirculating flows consuming mill capacity unnecessarily. This also increases average feed grade.

Aside from being an intrinsically safe, non-sparking and EMI/RFI immune medium , fibre optics offers greater reliability , higher quality of services and superior flexibility over conventional copper or radio-based communication systems.This paper wilt show how fibre optics can be applied in mining industry applications. Emerging trends and concepts will be presented to show how fibre-optic-based integrated service communication networks and local distribution systems can be implemented.IntroductionCommunication requirements in today's mine s are varied and extensive. The communication system must be rugged , safe and reliable, yet provide an ever increasing amount of high quality services. Presently, these systems are implemented using conventional copper cable. As mining method s and technology advance and the demand for better and more communication services increases, traditional systems quickly reach their limitations. It is under these circumstances that we turn to fibre optic communication systems.Fibre optics is a mature technology which is finding its way into more and more applications worldwide. A fibre optic communication system can provide a level of performance unattainable by conventional cable systems yet ca n be cost competitive. As is well known, fibre optics provides a noise-free, noise-immune, high -capacity communications channel. Glass fibre, being dielectric and non-sparking, is an intrinsically safe communications medium. Clearly, it is ideally suited to the harsh environment present in a mine.From a communication systems point-of-view, the topology of a deep mine is unique. The objective of the systems engineer is to implement a total communications capability throughout this wide spread area. Ideally all classes of services should be accessible throughout the network-an integrated network concept. Recent advances in communications technology combined with fibre optics make this realizable."

"INTRODUCTIONThe Red Dog Project in Alaska is being developed by Cominco Alaska, a subsidiary of Corninco Ltd. of Canada, and the Nana Regional Corporation, one of the 12 native corporations created by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of1971.The State of Alaska is also a very key part of the project through its financing of the transportation system for Red Dog. Red Dog will be the third, and largest, of Cominco's Arctic mining developments in the past thirteen years, after the Black Angel Mine in Greenland, which started up in 1973, and the Polaris Mine in the Canadian Arctic, which began production six years ago in 1982.Red Dog is one of the world's great mineral deposits, with a unique combination of large size, high-grade, and a waste-to- ore ratio less than I: I, which will make it the world's largest, and one of the lowest cost zinc producers, when at full production. The present mineral reserve is estimated to be 85 million tons , at a grade of 17.1010 zinc, 5% lead, and 2.4 ounces per ton of silver. Based on the current production forecast, this will give a mine life of almost 50 years, and the deposit is still open in two directions, although the structure is becoming thinner at depth. As well, there is a satellite zone about one mile south of the main deposit which could contain up to another 8 million tons of mineral at Red Dog grades or better. This is not presently included in the reserve due to potential processing difficulties.In relation to other zinc deposits, Red Dog is the second largest ever discovered, smaller than the original Broken Hill deposit in Australia, but larger than Cominco's own Sullivan Mine in British Columbia, which is number three. It is quite possible that, when the area is adequately explored, Red Dog will be number one."

Abstract - BHP Minerals discovered the Archean lode gold ULU deposit on the western margin of the High Lake Volcanic Belt in 1989. The greenschist to amphibolite facies mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks on the property are folded into a 5 km-long anticline. There is a close spatial association of Au-As zones to the trace of this F2 ULU anticline. The largest of these auriferous zones, the Flood zone, is localized at the core of the fold. The southeast-trending Flood zone consists of several anastomosing lenses that have been traced for 435 m on surface. Overall, it dips steeply (70° to 80°) to the southwest and has been intersected to depths below 600 m. The hosting high-iron tholeitic basalt displays a lower amphibolite mineral assemblage of ferrohornblende + plagioclase + ilmenite with accessory quartz and epidote. Alteration minerals include biotite, chlorite, hornblende, actinolite-tremolite, and potassium feldspar (microcline) with minor calcite, epidote, tourmaline, and titanite. The highest gold values occur where brecciated basaltic wall-rock clasts are replaced by acicular arsenopyrite + quartz + K-feldspar. BHP Minerals completed 54,783 m of both exploration and resource development drilling before selling the ULU property to Echo Bay Mines in 1995. Development of ULU as a satellite deposit to Echo Bay’s Lupin mine began in 1996. A -15% ramp was extended to the 155-meter level, and 16,011 m of underground drilling were completed before the decline in gold prices forced a suspension of activities at ULU in August 1997. The current owners, Wolfden Resources Inc., drilled 18,569 m in 2004 to increase confidence in the resource blocks. Following this drill program, a revised resource calculated by an independent consultant determined that the ULU deposit contains an inferred/indicated mineral resource of 1,130,000 t grading 11.34 g/t gold (373,748 oz) to the 360-m level. The portal was re-opened in 2005 and a prefeasibility study is underway.

"ABSTRACTTill geochemistry was the principal exploration tool employed by Selco in the investigation of a zinc prospect in Lanark Township, Ontario. The geochemical studies were undertaken after the discovery at surface of marble boulders containing bands of sphalerite and lesser amounts of galena.The source of these mineralized boulders was sought by means of B-horizon soil geochemistry, followed, where appropriate, by back-hoe trenching and till sampling. The thickness of the tiff in this part of Ontario seldom exceeds 3 m or 4 m and it was generally possible to sample complete profiles of the till and thus to obtain detailed information concerning the dispersion of zinc. Drilling and trenching at the up-ice extremity of the zinc dispersion trains showed the source of the float to be sub-economic bands of sphalerite in the Grenville marble. IntroductionTill geochemistry was used extensively by Selco during the period 1975 through 1980. It was the principal exploration technique employed in a program seeking carbonate-hosted lead-zinc deposits of the Balmat-Edwards type in the Grenville rocks of southeastern Ontario. This paper describes the use of the method to locate the bedrock source of a group of sphalerite boulders found at the surface near the village of Hopetown in Lanark Township (Fig. I) . Geochemical investigations at this locality were the subject of a previous publication by the author (Sinclair, 1979).All of the analytical work related to this project was done by Bondar-Clegg & Co. Ltd. in their Ottawa laboratory. In all cases the -80 mesh fraction of the till was analyzed. The total zinc content was determined by atomic ab sorption spectrometry after hot aqua regia digestion; readily extractable zinc was determined by atomic absorption after samples had been cold-leached for 18 hours in an ammonium citrate hydroxylamine hydrochloride solution, the pH of which was adjusted to 8.5"

"The Corbin area of southeastern British Columbia has been a coal mining area since 1908. Byron Creek Collieries Ltd. Has operated its Coal Mountain Mine in this area from 1974 until the present. In February 1981, this company was purchased by Esso Resources Canada Ltd.Coal Mountain is structurally complex and standard computer algorithms are not applicable to model the overturned synclinal structures and faulted bedding surfaces. This paper discusses two approaches used by Esso Resources staff to model the geology of Coal Mountain.The first approach projects digitized cross-section data along trend to develop a large data base which correctly approximates the shape of the structure. The spatial orientation of the structure is corrected by merging the generated data set with drill-hole data. The second approach uses digitized cross-section and bench-plan geology to generate a block model of the coal reserve.HistoryThe Coal Mountain Mine, also known as the Corbin Mine of Byron Creek Collieries Ltd. is located 24 kilometres south of Highway 3 in southeastern B.C.In 1905, two American businessmen recognized the coal potential of the area during a horseback tour. The two businessmen, D.C. Corbin and E.J. Roberts, formed the Corbin Coal and Coke Co. to mine and market coal from their newly acquired 6075 hectares of coal licenses. By 1908, the town of Corbin was under construction, a 22.4-km rail spur was constructed from the mine to the main CPR line and the first underground mine began to produce coal. An open-pit operation was also developed at the 1828-metre elevation using a steam shovel loading into rail cars. The company operated continuously until 1935, when a lengthy strike forced suspension of operations.In 1943, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company Ltd. (now known as Cominco Ltd.) operated two surface mines to produce coal for its smelters at Kimberley and Trail, B.C. This operation ceased in 1948."

"Coal is rapidly becoming a major alternative to oil. According to the World Coal Study Final Report, total world coal trade could approach one billion tons annually by the year 2000. To facilitate the increased production and export market potential of the coal producing countries, advancements must be made to improve the transportation systems. Coal slurry pipeline systems could play a significant role in achieving these market forecasts.There are three major components to a coal slurry system the preparation plant, the pipeline and the dewatering plant. The experience and expertise gained from the Consolidation Coal Company system in Ohio, the Black Mesa system in Arizona and ETSI's Coal Evaluation Plant demonstrate that slurry pipeline technology is proven and available to meet the coal transport challenge.The costs of transporting coal by slurry pipeline can offer significant savings, as about 70 per cent of its costs are fixed. The reverse is true for railroads, where 75 to 80 per cent of the costs vary with inflation. All forms of transport-rail, barge and pipeline-will be required to move the massive volumes of coal. Coal slurry systems can provide a viable transport alternative.IntroductionThe importance of coal as a major alternative to oil is now well known and accepted throughout the world. Increasing oil prices over the last eight years have had a serious effect on national economics, particularly in those countries that are heavily dependent on oil. Coal can replace oil as the principal fuel source which could support world economic growth over the next two decades. This is the main conclusion of the World Coal Study (WOCOL) Final Report, published in May 1980.The product of that report was a result of considerable deliberation by key industry leader s and energy experts. The underlying message of the World Coal Study is that our energy and economic problems can be faced with confidence if coal use doubles by the early 1990s and triples by 2000, and if steam coal trade expand s considerably."

"This paper discusses the mining problems encountered at the Fording River coal mine to date, and how they have been solved. All of the production now comes from surface mining, but underground hydraulic mining is planned and briefly described. Other facets of the operation, including markets, equipment and personnel, are covered. IntroductionFording Coal Limited was formed in 1968 to mine and market metallurgical coal resources held by the company in the East Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The company, at its Fording River operations, holds approximately 48,000 acres of coal lands, having an estimated 2.0 to 3.0 billion long tons of metallurgical coal in place. (Although not a point for further discuss ion in this paper, the company also holds approximately 1.0 million acres of mineral rights. These consist primarily of coal in Alberta, potash and coal in Saskatchewan, and minor industrial mineral holdings of limestone, salt and bentonite in the three western provinces.)Fording Coal is owned 60% by Canadian Pacific Investments Ltd. and 40% by Cominco Ltd. Inasmuch as Cominco itself is owned approximately 54% by CPI, it is seen that the effective CPI ownership of Fording is about 82%. The company, originally staffed and managed by Cominco, has been independent since January, 1978, with its own board of directors, management, staff and employees.The company's head office is in Calgary, Alberta. The Fording River operations are located approximately 45 miles north of the Crowsnest Pass, near the Alberta/British Columbia boundary, only 95 air miles and 200 road miles from Calgary.A contract was signed in 1969 with the Japanese steel mills to provide 45 million long tons of metallurgical coal over IS years, commencing in 1972 at an annual rate of 3 million long tons per year. Despite some start- up difficulties, the mine and plant facilities achieved their rated capacities in 1975, producing and shipping at the 3-million-Iong-ton level. The coal specifications are shown in Table I."

"In recent years, the major effort in detonator development has been concentrated on ""non-electric"" systems. Existing types all involve some form of explosive reaction to transfer ignition energy from outside the borehole to the pyrotechnic delay element contained within the detonator. These may be based on low-energy detonating cords having grained or plasticized explosive cores, shock tube energy transmission principals and explosive gas ignition systems. Each has properties of internal and external effects not present in electric conductors.The MAGNADET System introduces transformer coupling into electric blasting circuits. Safety features with respect to current leakage, stray currents of AC or DC source, electrostatic energy and radio-frequency radiation are comparable to ""non-electric"" systems, with advantages in simplicity, speed of hook-up and range of application.The transformer device used is a small ferrite ring or toroid which is an integral part of each specialized detonator. The detonator legwires form the secondary side of the transformer winding. The primary side is a single wire loop common to all units within the circuit. Power is supplied from a frequency-tuned portable exploder with unique circuit-sensing features.The MAGNADET System is expected to have particular application to shaft sinking, raising and tunnelling where the protective features as well as speed and efficiency are critical factors. Applications of the 'MAGNA' booster in quarries, open pits and longhole deck charges offer control over vibration problems and elimination of surface noise.IntroductionFor many years, electric detonators and electric blasting systems dominated surface and underground applications where controlled delay times were required. Control over the instant of detonation by blasting machines or power-line switches is the major safety feature.Electrical energy exists in many forms. It may originate from many sources. Electrical energy can be difficult to contain. It may enter or escape through a variety of conductive paths. It may fluctuate, concentrate or dissipate to pose a most elusive potential hazard."

"The six mineable coal seams at Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) vary in thickness from 0.75 m to 9.5 m and include waste partings varying from 0.2 m to 4 m thick. They are highly faulted and folded in some areas and dip angles range from horizontal to 90 degrees. Due to this variation in thickness and orientation of the seams, several different mining methods are used to economically recover the coal. The key to QCL's success depends on the timely collection of detailed geology data and on mine planning which allows selection of the best method of mining to achieve maximum coal recovery with minimum dilution and cost. This paper will describe the various methods of mining employed and the criteria used to select them. IntroductionThe unique challenge in mining at Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) is to extract large quantities of coal and waste, from a complex orebody, with constricted areas for mining and waste disposal. This challenge dictates the mining of as many as four 10 m benches per year, through complicated coal structures, from three separate open pits with a total of 19coal seams. This total is made up of 5 seams at Mesa, 8 seams at Wolverine and 6 seams at Shikano (Fig. 1).Computer-aided mine planning and scheduling is carried out on a routine basis to ensure the prudent selection of methods of mining, to produce plans which ensure delivery of appropriately blended raw coals to the plant, and to coordinate disposal of large quantities of waste.Several methods of mining are applied simultaneously, and as a result coal and waste are released at different rates from twelve to fifteen mining faces. In order to ensure uninterrupted flow of material from excavators and to utilize the truck fleet effectively, a computerized dispatch system is employed.GeologyGenerally, geological conditions can be related to structural (faults and dip angle) and/or stratigraphic (coal seam and interseam waste thickness) sources"

"In recent years, there has become a growing interest toward a better understanding of balance rope behaviour. With this in mind, the auth or will present a comprehensive summary of field experience, as well as conclusions. In presenting this overview, it is the intent to stimulate further interest as well as provide a framework from which further in-depth investigation can be initiated.Topics which will be covered include rope cores, lubrication practices, loop dividers, rope failures, etc.IntroductionThe first friction hoist was designed in Belgium in J862 by Lemielle. However, it was not until 1877 when Carl Frederich Koepe installed a friction winder sheave at the Hanover Colliery in Germany, that the design was given serious consideration. The winder consisted of a motor-powered sheave over which a single rope was installed, and the end s attached to two conveyance s. Beneath the conveyances a rope was connected, designed to reduce the chance of slip. This was the first balance rope.This earl y mod el is a far cry from the modern tower or ground mounted Koepe winders employed throughout the mining industry today. There have been vast improvements in all aspects of the Koepe winders. One such improvement is in the balance ropes used. This particular area will be concentrated on, with emphasis on selection, maintenance and field experience.SelectionThe sale purpose o f a balance rope is to counter the head rope weight. Obviously then, in selection o f balance ropes, weight is of primary concern. Usually the head and balance ropes are equal in weight. However, sometimes balance ropes which are 5 to 10070 heavier than the head ropes are employed. These reduce horsepower demands during peak acceleration periods, and assist in overcoming inertia during retardation periods. As well, it is sometimes preferred to reduce the balance rope weight, in order to compensate for the eventual weight buildup of lubricant, dirt and debris."

"The effectiveness of sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and hydrogen peroxide pressure oxidation on the cyanide extractability of gold from a double-refractory concentrate is presented. Whileover90% of the sulphide content could be oxidized by either of the two acid pretreatments, only 65% was achieved by the peroxide oxidation. Carbon oxidation by both acid and peroxide pressure oxidation were less than 15%. Although the peroxide pressure oxidation pretreatment resulted in much lower sulphur and carbon oxidation, it gave pretreated residues with decreased levels of preg-robbing activities and higher gold recoveries during subsequent cyanidation, thus indicating some deactivation ofthe preg-robbing carbon during pretreatment with hydrogen peroxide. The refractoriness due to carbon preg-robbing activity was found to contribute more to the refractory behaviour of the concentrate than the occlusion of gold particles by the sulphide mineralization.IntroductionGold ores and concentrates are classified as refractory when a significant portion of the gold content cannot be extracted efficiently by conventional cyanidation, even after fme grinding (Weir and Berezowsky, 1984); (Demopoulos and Papangelakis, 1987). The refractory behaviour of precious metal ores and concentrates is generally attributed to two main factors: The presence of carbonaceous materials which could cause preg-robbing activity during cyanidation (Zaitseva et al., 1973); (Nice, 1971); Scheiner et al., 1971); (Eisele et al., 1983), or occlude gold-bearing minerals (Wells and Mullens, 1973); (Gasparrini, 1983); (Chen and Reddby, 1990), and the occurrence of sulphide minerals which can occlude gold, thus reducing the access of lixiviants (Schwartz, 1944); (Weir et al., 1986); (papangelakis and Demopoulos, 1990); (Michaelis, 1989); (Schweigart, 1965). When the refractoriness is due to a combination of these two factors, the ore or concentrate can be referred to as being ""double-refractory"". Because of the rarity of gold ores exhibiting this double-refractory phenomenon, only a few studies have been carried out on their suitability for pretreatment by existing techniques."

"The Athabasca Basin has been the scene of an intense exploration effort since the late 1960s, resulting in the establishment of this area as one of the major uranium districts in the world.The A thabasca Group is of Helikian age and unconformably overlies metamorphic rocks of Aphebian and Archean age. Most of the known uranium deposits have a close spatial relationship with the unconformity, graphitic meta-sediments, major northeast-trending structures and the basin edge. It should be noted that, in regard to the latter, some of the Cluff Lake deposits are exceptions.The pre-Helikian rocks underlying the Athabasca Group have been divided into six Iithostructural domains. The known uranium deposits are concentrated in the Wollaston and Mudjatik domains in the southeastern portion of the basin.The orebodies typically have a narrow high-grade portion below the unconformity and a broader, lower-grade disseminated zone in the overlying sandstone. Over-all grades average over 1% U3O8 and our estimate of known reserves totals more than 400 million pounds of contained U3O8. Some of the deposits have high concentrations of other metals, including nickel, arsenic, cobalt and gold. Ubiquitous chlorite and clay alteration is characteristic of the orebodies.Other Proterozoic basins in Canada of similar ages and having analogous geological settings to the Athabasca have received far less attention. Although little of the known uranium mineralization in these basins is related to the Helikian unconformity, there may be an exploration potential for deposits similar to those of the Athabasca basin.IntroductionThe Athabasca sedimentary basin is located within the Churchill Structural Province of the Canadian Shield in Northern Saskatchewan. The basin is elliptically shaped and is approximately 800,000 square kilometres in area.The objective of this paper is to summarize the various elements in the genesis of the unconformity-type uranium deposits of the Athabasca Basin and to evaluate the comparative potential of other Proterozoic basins to host similar unconformity-type deposits."

"The behaviour of minerals in the Mount Wright spiral circuit was investigated to find methods of improving iron oxide mineral liberation and recovery. The feeds, concentrates and tailings from rougher, cleaner and recleaner spirals in one mill line were sampled before and after the sizing screen openings were reduced from 2 mm to 1.6 mm. Sized fractions of each sample were analyzed with the MP-SEM-IPS image analysis system at CANMET to determine mineral quantities and liberation characteristics of the iron oxide minerals. Mass balance techniques were used to calculate stream recoveries of iron, silica, total iron oxide minerals, hema¬tite, goethite, quartz, ferromagnesian silicates, and liberated and locked total iron oxide minerals for each sieve fraction.The reduction of the sizing screen openings increased the ap¬parent liberation of the total iron oxide minerals in the screen undersize from 89% to 94% and raised the over-all iron recovery from 84.4% to 85.3%. Apparent liberation of iron oxide minerals in the cleaner sand also increased from 70% to 85%, but the – 75 µm fraction re¬mained the only fraction containing an acceptable amount of liber¬ated iron oxide minerals in each case. Due to limitations of spiral and grinding efficiency it is recommended that the cleaner sand be screened at 300 m, the +300 m fraction be reground, and the – 300 p.m fraction be rerouted to the rougher spirals.The amount of fine liberated iron oxide minerals (– 106 m) lost in the tailings was 46 TPH in mill line 3. This value represents 41 wt % of the free fine iron oxide minerals, or 7 wt % of the total iron oxide minerals in the spiral feed. Further work is needed to investigate the possibility of recovering this material by other methods.Middling iron particles (010 50%) and presumably free gangue in the size range –300+ 75 m tend to be recovered by spirals by entrapment."

"A mine evaluation method based on the use of a computer program that models mining with an open-ended dynamic program is presented in this paper. It is demonstrated with an example how the method is applied, how some of the decision variables are related in the particular industrial environment and how these decision variables affect the economic benefits of mining.IntroductionTwo distinguishing characteristics make mining a particular industrial environment: exhaustible resources of a given ore deposit and heterogeneousness of the ore grade spatial distribution in the ore deposit. These characteristics, inflation, uncertainty and cyclical price variations which greatly affect estimated cash flows also contribute in rendering difficult the evaluation of the economic outcome of mining at the preliminary planning stage.Decision variables and their ranges are associated with the mine plan; basically, they include choices of the mine's nominal capacity (mining and milling), the sequencing of mining through the deposit, the ranges of possible production rates and cutoff grades, and the stockpiling policies. The mine's nominal capacity must be decided at the planning stage, but this capacity choice must take into account flexibility to modify other decision variables as mining commences and uncertainty resolves.Although it is generally accepted in discounted cash flow analysis that the sequence of mining must proceed from the richest to the lowest-grade stopes (with correspondingly ajusted cutoff grades), this may not produce optimum benefits when cyclical price variations are considered.Mining rates and cutoff grades can also be adjusted to changing economic conditions, taking into account the limited resources of the ore deposit. Thus, when prices are thought to be in the trough of a cycle, production can decrease to preserve ore for expected greater future profits. When prices rise, mining rates can increase possibly even over the mine's nominal capacity. In both cases, the machinery's effectiveness shall not be-optimally utilized; this will be reflected particularly by the variations in the concentrator's metal recovery and the concentrate grade output."

"The operation of flotation circuits is often regarded as a combination of art and science. Expert systems offer a method by which the art may be captured and supervisory control of flotation circuits fully realized. Operating knowledge, the art, can be consistently employed to enhance regulatory control through the judicious application of an expert system. Using an expert system, a supervisory control routine was developed, and success- fully implemented, in the copper flotation circuit at Brenda Mines Ltd.The expert system ran in conjunction with regulatory PI controllers on a personal computer. The expert system received assays via an on-stream analyzer and adjusted regulatory loop set points as required in real-time. From its commissioning in November, 1989, to the end of the mine 's operation in June, 1990, it was enthusiastically embraced by the operators and attained operating levels superior to those achievable manually.IntroductionExpert system (ES) software springs from research into artificial intelligence and is currently making significant inroads into business and industry. ES proponents make many attractive claims; they are a means of capturing the knowledge of experts and they can be programmed by non-programmers. To date, most uses of this software in the process industry are in off-line applications, meaning that the applications are not tied directly to operating (on-line) environments. Moreover, in on-line environments, they are typically employed as advisors and only suggest changes. Human operators are required to close-the-loop to the process. Yet, an ES should be applicable to operating environments and, if the claims of the proponents are valid, should also be better than existing tools. As an intelligent controller an ES must use the knowledge of experienced operators, apply it directly to a process and do this without the intervention of human operators. On-line applications have been successfully employed in the closed loop control of SAG circuits (Herbst et al., 1989) and flotation circuits (Hales, 1989). Harris and Kosick (1988)detail an implementation for flotation control at the Polaris Mine."
